Progressivism's Achilles Heel

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Behold the cultural contradictions of progressivism.

Barack Obama's victory was a huge win for self-described progressives. Arguably the most liberal presidential nominee in American history, Obama has given some very old ideas an aura of new coolness. Congrats on all that. Hope it works out for you.

But something interesting happened on Election Day that didn't get much attention. Bans on gay marriage were on ballots in several states, and they all won. In fact, gay marriage bans have ultimately passed in all 30 of the states in which they were on the ballot.

The ban in California was particularly intriguing. Proposition 8 would have failed in the Golden State if it were up to white voters, who opposed it by a 51-49 ratio. What carried it over the top was enormous support from black voters, with about 70 percent of them backing it. Hispanics also supported the ban by significant, though smaller, margins. In Florida, where a similar ban required a 60 percent margin, Amendment 2 just barely passed, getting 60 percent of the white vote. The cushion came from blacks, who voted 71 percent in favor, and Latinos, who voted 64 percent in favor.

In other words, Obama had some major un-progressive coattails. The tidal wave of black and Hispanic voters who came out to support Obama voted in enormous numbers against what most white liberals consider to be the foremost civil rights issue of the day.

Put aside the substance of the gay marriage debate; what's fascinating is how these returns expose the underlying weakness, or at least vulnerability, of progressivism.

As a matter of practical politics, contemporary liberalism amounts to a coalitional ideology, while conservatism remains an ideological coalition. The Democratic Party is the party of various groups promising to scratch each other's backs. Gay rights activists and longshoreman coexist in the same party because they promise support on each other's issues.

The Republican Party is different. It says to voters, if you believe seven, eight or even 10 out of the 10 things we believe, you should be a Republican. Obviously, there are coalitions on the right and ideologues on the left, but I think the generalization remains valid.

But sometimes a tactical orientation can be confused for an ideological principle. That's why the left places such high value on unity, solidarity and a no-enemies-on-the-left mentality. That's why Obama preached endlessly about unity and the evils of being "divisive" or "distracted" from what really matters.

Another example of a tactic masquerading as a principle is contemporary liberalism's fixation with the idea that the working and middle class should "vote their interests," by which they mean vote for the most government goodies. This was the point of Obama's "bitter" and "clinging" comments last summer. Those poor deluded souls in western Pennsylvania don't understand that their real interests lie with Obama's economic agenda.

For all the liberal protests claiming that Obama's "bitter" comments were misunderstood, his remarks were, in fact, mainstream on the left. For instance, Thomas Frank, something of a guru to angry liberals, wrote in his book "What's the Matter with Kansas?" that, "People getting their fundamental interests wrong is what American political life is all about. This species of derangement is the bedrock of our civic order; it is the foundation on which all else rests." And, he added at great length, it is the reason so many deluded working- and middle-class Americans vote Republican (or at least why so many did when Frank wrote his book).

This has always struck me as hypocritical, pernicious lunacy. Legitimate election issues are those issues voters decide are legitimate. Americans who cling to religion and guns don't do so out of bitterness, but because they consider such things central to their understanding of the good life and resent what they perceive as hostility to their lifestyle from their own government. And no liberal opposes voting on values issues -- including gay rights -- when they think they're right or if they believe it helps get liberals elected. Liberals denounce rich people who vote their interests as "greedy" and celebrate limousine liberals who vote against their own interests as heroes. And at least some of the folks who voted for Obama did so not because of their pocketbooks, but because of the symbolism inherent to Obama's candidacy.

Regardless, Obama clearly succeeded in convincing enough Americans that a vote for him was in their interest. But he was incapable of convincing even his biggest supporters to vote their interests as he defined them and nothing else. That's because Americans are defined by more than their paychecks, a fact I expect Barack Obama will come to appreciate more and more in the days ahead.

Oh so true
Everyone should buckle up. It will be an intersting ride, to say the least for the next four years. the Kennedy appointment? to the EPA will be fun to watch.

My interest?

It is not in my best interest to use the government as a gun to hold up my fellow Omericans. Are you listening farmers, bankers, insurance companies, ect?

Great article
Thanks.

Andy Eppink
Man, that's the truth. 'Change', my a__. There's nothing new there in Barak's old rehashed Marxism. He's as vacuous and errant as ever. Were he not black and not had this imploding economy blowing him along I don't think he'd have reached 1st base. All the crazy cultists, leftists and whackjobs are going to hemorrhage when he's predictably unable to deliver the goods, and the h___ of it is He lately appears to actually believe much of what He says.

Know Thine Enemy

We need to exploit the weaknesses of progressivism to defeat it.

With a true progressive in the White House and a hodgepodge of liberal-progressive dunderdheads running Congress, we should all bone up on our knowledge of progressivism.

This is a superb article by Jonah Goldberg. To begin understanding progressivism, I highly recommend his book, "Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning"
ISBN-13: 978-0385511841

Rude Awakening
Wait until all those Soros financed disinformation operatives, those ACORN cemetery registration hustlers and those 'rent a mob' agitators now find they're no longer needed and therefore no longer on the payroll, and further, that their 'experience' isn't worth jack on a diminishing employment open market, will the howling and whining begin.

This is one feature of hope and change I trust they can deal with.

Do not underestimate...
...the ability of the Republicans in Congress to lie down and play dead.

Where is Newt Gingrich now that we need him?

Focus should be on governing well!
It seems that both parties need to work on governing well. Neither party should be about social engineering. Both parties should not listen to the fringe elements at both extremes. The situation begs for politicians to be pragmatists.

The civil order
Right on, Goldberg! You put your finger on the vital pressure point.

Conservatives support the traditional civil order comprised of numerous civil institutions operating according to their own conventions. Among these civil institutions are marriage, family, religion, speech, association, privacy, property, and self-defense.

Americans order their lives and social conduct around these civil institutions. What is more, the Bill of Rights limits the government's power to annex or trespass against them, although it seems that few courts have consulted it lately. Regardless, Americans resent the government's efforts to annex or trespass against their civil institutions, expecting the government to support them according to the conventions establishing and ordering them. Liberty is not possible, otherwise.

However, it now appears that Obama, Pelosi and Reid, AKA "The Liberal Triune", believe themselves empowered to fundamentally change America by annexing and trespassing against her civil institutions. For example, they will push for the Fairness Doctrine, which trespasses against speech, and Card Check, which trespasses against association, and same-sex marriage, which trespasses against family, and gun control, which trespasses against self-defense.

On each and every occasion that the Liberal Triune attempts to annex or trespass against one of our civil institutions, conservatives must sound the charge and lead it from the very tip of the spearhead. In this way, we will shatter the progressive lines and bring their rabble of self-serving low.

How about them bitter yokels...
...in California clinging to their mocha lattes and Berkenstocks voting for Proposition 8. They must be afraid of anyone that doesn't look like them.

Good points
Most analysts are saying had it not been for the economic crisis, McCain could have pulled off a victory. Sarah Palin's conservatism obviously struck a chord with the base constituency. Yet, witness the sniping at her still among the Republican inner-circle illuminati. That speaks volumes about what is broken in the party, itself.

Progressivism and global warming
Obama says he will bankrupt the coal industry with cape and trade(how will we make steel?) He plans to make the price of electricity sky high (these are all his own words!). He is against real energy independence: no nuclear plants, no clean coal, no drilling offshore. And to make sure that all comes true, he wants to appoint Kennedy, a rabid dog on the subject of global warming which doesn't even exist. Global warming is not a scientific conclusion, it is an ideological one. More governing from the middle? More looking out for the middle class? If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny how many people bought this pig in a poke. ANd notice from his proposed appointments that he is wasting no time in selecting radicals for prominent positions. So, so much for governing from the middle and being president to all of us. It is gonna be a bumpy ride. Ayn Rand is spinning in her grave. I am not my brother's keeper. This country was founded on individual rights, as constitutional scholar Obambi should admit, not collective rights. And we have all learned over and over again how well economies do when they are based on collective rights. Hold on to your guns, we may need a new revolution. And Ayers, you are not invited.

It is Time
I have never seen a better time in my 50-some years to launch a new party. Not a brand new party of malcontents, but a party of like-minded, progressive conservatives. This party would be made up of thinkers and planners from the Republican party and the pragmatic blue dog Democrats.

I don't see this party as "New Coke" but more like Acura or Lexus where you create something new out of the best you have to offer.

While "conservative" means to conserve what 'was', you cannot stop progress. I think that is the major problem that besets the modern Republican party. It is no accident that 99% of people in the arts trade are Dems. Sometimes you need to 'enhance' your message to get elected. Obama talked real pretty. McCain was just one or two notches above W.

I really feel that a rebranding could work. Gen up a structure of a party with Newt, and others who have left gov't out of disgust or shame or lack of desire to be dirty. Float the balloon to see if it gets knocked down. Line up a decent majority (34%) of congressmen willing to give it a try and BAM, presto-changeo. New party. Once congress is onboard, the rest will follow if the message is compelling. This would totally get rid of the fossils in BOTH parties, but truly would free the Democrats more than the Republicans.

I think that it is TIME and that there might be more desire from Dems than you would imagine.

Blacks and abortion rights
As a white man who belongs to a black church, I see possibilities for inroads in the area of abortion rights among blacks. There is an inconsistency between the Christianity that most blacks adhere to, and the unfettered abortion rights promoted by their party. I have seen more than one black person leave the Democrat party when this cognitive dissonance was pointed out. And from a pure practical point of view, it ought to be pointed out to black Democrats that they could wield more more if they were willing to hold the Democrat party's feet to the fire on this issue, threatening to leave if the party's platform is not moderated.

Either
the Constitutional Party or Libertarian Party would be better than the GOP as a mass defection destination.
Now is the optimal time for the move.

wishful thinking
Goldberg engages in a lot of wishful thinking here. The Democratic coalition is large, basically it now consists of everyone except for white voters without a college education and the superrich. It is funny that conservatives are now in the position of having to explain why having alienated everyone else is a good thing. And of course as long as conservatives continue to do so, they will lose elections. Eventually they will be smart enough not to define themselves so narrowly. But who knows how long?

One of the joys of reading Townhall is seeing how many conservatives are determined to make the Republican party a minority party as far as the eye can see.

Gay marriage referenda all went the way social conservatives wanted them to. Abortion referenda all went against the way social conservatives wanted. The difference is that 10 years ago the gay marriage referenda in California wouldn't have even been close. And if the issue is still around in 10 years it won't be close again only in the other direction. While the social conservative strength on abortion seems to be waning.

Maybe blacks will lose support among gay voters over proposition 8. Or maybe gay voters will bolt the democratic party, but I don't see it happening. Where would they go? To the party that runs on gay baiting?

As always
Be careful what you wish for, it may come true in spades.

Lon
Who is engaged in wishful thinking? Look in your mirror.

Join us American Patriots
The American Patriot to me is one who loves their Country and wish America no harm for any reason.

The American Patriot is male, female and children of every nationality, race, ethnic background and religion who wish America no harm for any reason.

The American Patriot are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom who wish America no harm.

The American Patriot ia proud of their flag and the Statue of Liberty which "welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed" and wishes America no harm.

The American Patriot takes pride in the greatest Warriors in the history of man - the American Soldier and wish America no harm.

The American Patriot looks at their sons and daughters in uniform with tears in their hearts and pride on their faces as their children goes off to defend the greatest country ever on this planet and wish America no harm.

The spouse and children of the American Patriot with anxiety in their hearts and faces shining with pride watch as their American Warrior leaves to defend America.

The American Patriot lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.

The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness and the right to self determination and wish America no harm.

The American Patriot does not want to weaken America in dangerous times for political reasons.

The American Patriot does not put ideology first and America second to harm it in hopes it will learn a 'lesson'.

God Bless America and its' Patriots!

NO APPEASEMENT TO MARXIST/OBAMA AND HIS MINIONS

Good analysis
Spot on. Something that bleeding heart liberals should be able to grasp is the very human quality of subordinating ones self interest. It is what separates us from the chimpanzees. How else do you explain the virtue of charity? or our nations involvement in any number of things that on the face were not in our self interest (WWIIm etc)? What accounts for volunteers who go to a foreign land to fight for people they have never seen?

RE: RCB - The civil order
Great article from Jonah and great post from RCB! Tremendous post! In this last election cycle, I noticed that the RNC seemed not to solicit donations until too late in the game (apparently it wasn't until after the Convention that fund raising ramped up). Fundamentally, the Republicans had no strategy based on Declaration based fundamental principles and Constitution based concepts and had no financial ammo. For the Counter-Revolution now before us, the Republican leadership (which lacks now) must answer the question: Why? Why do we even exist? What do we engage in politics for, really? When they answer that correctly they must then gather up some ex-Army Special Forces types and other strategists to plot a political insurgency and overthrow that lasts and goes well beyond a two or four year horizon. How about a 200+ year horizon? Once this is done, start gathering ammo (i.e. $$$) now to execute viable and relevant strategies and (as Jonah suggests) not be fooled by what are just mere tactics.

Charity is going to start
at home under Obama and his leftist illuminati practices, but unfortunately it will start with those who have no desire to help themselves.

Marxist Solutions For Everything
Any paycheck issues will be addressed by a Marxist using Marxist philosophy and policies.

It's what Marxists do... Supply a Marxist solution to every problem. Problems are always present and if the aren't available to exploit, they will create them...

It's what a Marxist does.

Dems and Civil Rights
People should really be surprised by the way blacks and hispanic voted on the gay rights. Blacks and Hispanics are much more traditional when it comes to sex. The interesting thing about Dems are this though just like Jim Crow and black civil right. Dems are more than willing to cut deals with those who discriminate to advance their agenda. I get in a lot arguments with my friends when they talk about how racist Republicans are.I point out to them when you watch those civil rights movement films and you see all those white people commiting voilence agianst the marchers all of them were Democrats. They join the Republican party after they lost the battle. When they was kicking black people asses they called themselves Democrats. Democrats should have taken Jim Crow down because they put it in place in the first place. As far as the gay marriage issue it will pass in the next 10 years because the left has succeed in mainstreaming homosexuality to young people. If you spend one day watching MTV you see that but you don't see that on BET or Spanish channels.

Florida, Cal., and Arizona
I too thought it very interesting that the voters would split so much on a foundational issue for the Dems, ie. gay marriage, and Obama the state but uphold traditional marriage. My family and I have been having some good conversations about whether there is still a majority of good people left in the USA, and I think the gay marriage votes give some hope in that respect. For all you history buffs out there check out the rise of Hitler and the National Socialist party in Germany to Obama's rise, down to their platform of "hope and change", economic turmoil, takeover of a major political party followed by ruthless suppression of dissent and an elimination of opposition. The time it to0k to change Germany from a basically free republic to a Socialist/Fascist dictatorship (but I repeat myself): four years, from about 1930 to 1934. Once a nation gets to a certain point on the slippery socialist slope, the fall to the bottom comes rapidly. It has also been pointed out that there is a correlation between the morality of the people and the amount of freedom they choose to have in relation to government, or to state it differently, the more righteous the people, the less government interference in freedom and individual rights. So..., we have a lot of deluded people out there who really do not understand where Socialism leads, but still have good basic moral values. As long as good people remain in the majority there is hope to change the socialist trend, but by the very nature of Socialism, it tends to corrupt minds and morals. Did I mention that in Nazi Germany, homosexuality was widely practiced among the elites, and Christianity was banished as a public nuisance/enemy to the State? Christianity and Socialism are antithetical, and cannot coexist peacefully. There was an excellent post about how evangelicals gave Obama the election

Kind of a wakeup call,eh?

If the government keeps throwing

money at the economy's problems, expect inflation to go hyper.

What to do in hyper-inflationary times? Put your money in goods that you can use for trade.

The reason credit is tight is because so many Americans are overextended on credit and with the amount of credit they already have they are not good prospects for repaying even more debt.

This economy was built on debt. Now this economy is debt saturated. Even at zero percent interest, it is foolish to loan money to someone who likely will not repay the money.

The only way to stop hyper-inflation is to increase supply (productivity) and decrease demand. The government plans to increase demand by printing money that it is going to give to people to spend. But if productivity does not increase, demand will far exceed supply and that is a recipe for inflation.

Our leaders are economic fools.

How does gold at $100,000/ounce sound?
`

Yes, will hispanics "deliberalize" dems
or will dems liberalize hispanics first (in the area of sexual matters).

We know that hispanics have a higher rate of out of wedlock babies than whites. They have a higher abortion rate too (surprised?). Clearly, they don't like homosexual marriage.

Hmmmm.......

How that will bode for the white liberals, I cannot guess.

That said, liberals go ballistic if you use the word "liberal" in comment section at the Huffington Post. They don't allow it.

Not only are liberals running scared from the wicked little things they do, but they HATE free speech. It is easier for a flaming lib to post here than for a conservative to post there.

Liberals/progressives/weirdos or whatever you want to call them hate truth and though they try to hide from their wreckages they cannot HIDE from their stinking, rotten selves.

" change Germany from a basically free republic to a Socialist/Fascist dictatorship"

Did Germany have an independent judicial branch to protect their constitution from radical legislation that would alter the system of government?

Our system was designed to ensure a balance and to protect against overreaching by any branch. The checks and balances that should be provided by the courts, Congress and the Constitution are too important to be sacrificed to such an agenda.

The U.S. Supreme Court is protector of the people’s rights, protection from the executive and legislative branches. Obama is likely to introduce a series of legislation aimed at industrial recovery, increasing minimum wages, increasing employment, and strictly regulating business.

If the Supreme Court begins questioning the constitutional validity of the Obama's new legislation, will he respond with a new "Court-Packing Bill"?
(for those that may not know the Court-packing Bill was a law proposed by United States President Franklin Roosevelt, would have allowed the President the power to appoint an extra Supreme Court Justice for every sitting Justice over the age of 70½.)

If Obama wishes to impose a radical push towards Socialism, he would need to shift the court from its current conservative bias to a strongly liberal orientation.
The conservative justices of the Supreme Ct. may postpone their retirement while Obama is in power, thus preventing the shift.

If Obama sees himself as "the new FDR with New Deal legislative packages" will he also attempt a new FDR style "Court-packing Bill"?

"Our leaders are economic fools."

They may be fools, but they are crafty fools.

They want inflation. It's the back-door income tax increase. Higher prices for goods and services will spur higher wages, which will increase prices; the cycle will continue and you'll have the recipe for inflation.

Inflation will push everyone into higher tax brackets; many tax payers below the proposed $250k limit will be thrust into the new tax bracket of inflated rates. Many of the 40% who pay no federal income tax will see the $500 rebate check, along with more from their paycheck, returned to the govt. as they too are pushed upwards into to tax paying brackets. The middle class will be pushed from lower pct. tax brackets to higher ones.
The taxpayer that used to pay 25% of income now will pay 30-35% of income.

Pretty sneaky, huh? Doh!bama is no dope.

I won't even discuss the other tax increases that will take a disproportionate bite from the income of lower wage earners. (excise, alcohol, tobacco, utilities, gasoline, internet, etc.)

Brian
Actually, the Nazis put gays in concentration camps and killed them. They also launched unprovoked invasions and squashed desent (See Bill #18 above).

Lon's argument
I have heard this argument before since Reagan at least. That the mass coalition of misfits will beat the actual ideology of a party that exists in the Republican party.

Let me point out some things about his argument.

1) Every coalition expires if you look at Europe which form coalition governments. Eventually once they have power the excuse they need each other or their issues are being address starts fading and infighting, leading to discord, leading to incoherent government, leading to a huge independent move away from that party. Sound familiar.

2) Has the country changed much from 2004 when we had basically the same numbers the dems have now? And the White House? Answer: No. FOLKS WE HAD A MAJOR FINANCIAL CRISIS (Caused by dems) AND A CHANGE CYCLE TO BOOT. DON'T PANIC!

3)Our strengths like National Security have faded with the success of the surge and lowering spending we got off track. Without at least fiscal conservatism we have little appeal to the voters in the middle. The dems know how to spend. Everybody knows that happened and all the new spending is tied to dems so this will come around back to our strength if we can remember who we are.

4) If any of you are over 40 we have seen it all come around. We lost in pretty much the same way in 1992 but the voters threw them back out starting in 2000 and all the hispanics, young, gays, etc. Were all voting similiar to now. Nothing is THAT different from 2008 from 2000 or 1992. Don't the liberals have threatened this many times to get us to become democrats which is THEIR REAL GOAL.

Think why Lon or any others are even telling us how to win elections. As a favor? Don't EVER listen to liberals about what Republicans should be to win back power!!!!

#6 Rude Awakeing

The people Obama plans for his new civilian security force will most likely come from his loyal ACORN followers.

That is probably what he is looking for: Thugs who are tired of White Supremacy.

Great writing
Brilliant, brilliant article!

Maybe some of the best thoughts ever communicated in my opinion:

". . . But he was incapable of convincing even his biggest supporters to vote their interests as he defined them and nothing else. That's because Americans are defined by more than their paychecks, a fact I expect Barack Obama will come to appreciate more and more in the days ahead."

Simply true, and brilliant, Jonah.

sol
quote: "The U.S. Supreme Court is protector of the people’s rights, protection from the executive and legislative branches."

Yea, until Obama changes the Supreme Court.

sol & the SCOTUS
Yea, a real laugher, that one. It worked so well when they protected the Cherokee against the first Democrat, Andrew Jackson. Thence the Trail of Tear. And Japanese internment at the early days of WWII, by none other than the most high, FDR.

It's a fine track record to depend on the Courts against an activist, left leaning, Democratic administration. Other than a few bad examples, it really works!
