Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Plans, shmans.

Under Barack Obama's plan, 95 percent of Americans will get a tax cut. John McCain's plan will deliver portable, affordable health care to all Americans. Obama has a plan to win in Afghanistan. So does McCain. There are plans for how to implement plans and plans for how some plans will be replaced by other plans. Go through their respective Web sites and you'll fine more plans than at the hall of records.

But none of it is real, not really. Some historians claim that 19th-century Prussian field marshal Helmuth von Moltke, not President Eisenhower, authored the aphorism that no plan survives contact with the enemy. But my guess is that the first Neanderthal who came back from a woolly mammoth hunting party with some flattened comrades and a lot of broken spears said something similar.

The simple fact is that planning is very hard. Even plans to build houses often require countless revisions. But planning for people is so much harder. Every weekend I have a plan for how my one 5-year-old child will spend her day. Keep in mind: I am literally the boss of her. She has no money, little education and no reliable means of escape. And yet, she foils my plans time and again. But somehow we're supposed to believe that a plan involving billions or trillions of dollars, millions of people (each with their own agenda) and thousands of communities influenced by countless interested parties and bureaucracies is not only possible, but the highest responsibility of our elected leaders.

Mao and Stalin had their five-year plans and benefited from the added flexibility that comes with the ability to kill millions of their own people, and yet that worker's paradise always seemed just one more five-year plan away. Every football team goes into a game with a plan. Only one comes out victorious.

This is not to say that some plans don't work out. But what makes for a successful plan is a complicated thing, the details of which will have to wait for another day.

The simple, relevant fact is that the more detailed and extensive a plan a president proposes, the less likely it is that it will be enacted. One basic reason for this - often overlooked by politicians and the journalists who cover them - is that presidents don't make laws in our system. Congress does. And Congress usually has plans of its own. Bill Clinton promised health-care reform, and his wife had a plan thicker than the New York City Yellow Pages. Congress never even voted on it.

Much like Obama, Bill Clinton barnstormed the country promising a middle-class tax cut. Once he got into the White House, that got filed under "never gonna happen." George H.W. Bush said "read my lips" about his plan to never, ever, ever raise taxes. It turned out that "never" is a term open to many interpretations.

Now, depending on your perspective, you might think such reversals are profiles in courage, and you might even be right. But the point is that it is juvenile to believe that voting for a president is synonymous with holding a referendum on a plan. And yet we have these interminable, often Jesuitical debates on what the fine print of the candidates' plans says. Journalistic fact-checkers take their jeweler's glasses to every footnote and appendix as if the ultimate merit of each candidate can be found in a binder.

Even worse, after every debate we are subjected to an endless parade of focused-grouped "swing voters" who think they're oh-so-terribly sophisticated for wanting to hear ever more details about this candidate's plan for education reform or that candidate's scheme for health care. It's all absurd intellectual vanity. These voters are undecided not because they haven't been spoon-fed enough policy detail, but because they haven't been paying attention and haven't bothered to do even minimal research about the candidates.

I'm not saying that candidates shouldn't have platforms. But voters - and journalists - should look at them as mission statements, not the political equivalent of instructions that come with a disassembled bicycle.

The real hints for how to choose a candidate, at least in a general election (as opposed to a primary), reside in the realm of judgment, philosophy, track record and temperament. And, using those criteria, the choice shouldn't be hard at all.

This is the second day in a row that the Gallup poll shows Obama up by 11 points.

uh oh
I wonder how many of the soon-to-be-more-broke investors of Wall Street would tolerate a complete novice to personal investment taking over their entire retirement portfolio (money markets, mutual funds, etc.). I'll bet they'd prefer someone with some experience. And I'll bet they'd prefer someone who didn't hang out with the likes of Jim Johnson, Raines, William Ayers, and other irresponsible whack jobs.

Why is it so hard to communicate this to the masses, John McCain?

Jonah
You are superb - you must have married the right kind of woman.

Not only is she inspiring you to greatness, but she is NOT preventing you from achieving it.

Your articles leading to this watershed election have been sagacious yet aesopian. They reflect an education that wasn't confined to 'changing the world'.

There's no question in my mind that you lend more prestige to that LA Times rag than it confers on you.

I won't contribute to the price of their newspaper but, thanks to syndication, I am forever grateful I am able to read your columns.

Jonah: I have never heard Barack Obama mention the potential disposition of the American Medical Association regarding his plan. In the early fifties, living in Upper Manhattan, the doc came upstairs, gave us a shot or some cough medicine and my dad gave him 5 bucks. That was our healthcare and today in spite of the simplicity of all of that I am vibrant and youthful at 57. A decade later, medical practices brought in millions until insurance, computerization, highly paid healthcare employees, malpractice matters and attorneys ate up the shinola. Obama, I'll bet in his Robin Hood agenda is going to take from the physicians and pharmeceutical companies so that he can further his class warfare politics. That will be like fighting a renegade elephant with a peashooter.
Jay R

Its all smoke and mirrors
In one of the books I have read either by or about this abortion on the hoof is the statement '(he) I am just a blank screen which reflects back what people want to see'. Its noteworthy that he never reveals the "real Obama" but wait til he is elected, and unfortunately he will be. McCain started too late in "outing" his soccialist ties.

How is it possible
That 42% of taxpayers pay ZERO income taxes and 95% of taxpayers will receive a refund?

Tax Foundation economists estimate that roughly 43.4 million tax returns, representing 91 million individuals, will face a zero or negative tax liability. That's out of a total of 136 million federal tax returns that will be filed. Adding to this figure the 15 million households and individuals who file no tax return at all, roughly 121 million Americans—or 41 percent of the U.S. population—will be completely outside the federal income tax system

Why then do we keep seeing this 95% nonsense perpetuated in the media?

It is a huge lie.

What everyone should keep in mind
Are a few basic facts.

1. Politicians, as a rule, lie well and plan badly. ("Mr. Ryan, I'm a politician. That means that I'm a thief, and a liar, and when I'm not kisiin' babies, I'm stealin' their lollipops"- Jeffrey Pelt [Richard Jordan] in "The Hunt For Red October", Paramount, 1990, from the novel by Tom Clancy.)

2. No politician of the "progressive" stripe will ever propose or do anything which will lessen the power of government, and thus their own power-over you. Conservatives used to be a bit more rational about this, but nowadays, they seem to have forgotten who sends them to Washington, and why.

3. When all else fails, remember the TANSTAAFL Rule-

There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

Somebody always has to pay for it. Somehow.

This One Was So Easy To Predict
When females faint, tingles go up the leg, MSM swoons, and -- the last straw, Hitlery got beat -- no contest. The great push to label Hitlery as the worst, was wrong and that was also easy to diagnose. Both Demos are socialists but Obama's 2 terms will destroy the US as a republic. Free everything has no place in a republic but that is what the politicians are offering. It takes a village was peanuts compared to what ACORN has in store for us.

Plans, Character and Style
Thanks Jonah for a well reasoned article and why people fall back on Character and supposed experience. If Obama's past contacts are matched by McCain's Keating 5 and others. If Palin has her witch bashing Reverand to match Reverend Wright. If Biden has his gaffs and the plans are just window dressing, what are we left with?....for me two extremely well intentioned candidates, who want to do the best for the country, so it then comes down to style and approach. I have watched how McCain needs a fight to shine and a maverick can equal erratic and pugnacious; Obama engages people with his rhetoric and can be perceived as a statesman or an appeaser. Since I favor the iron fist in the velvet glove approach, Obama has it over McCain in an unsafe world (McCain is all fist). Then there's vision - I can see and hear Obama's, sometimes overwhelmed by Biden speak; McCain feels closer to Bush, with Palin as Bush in drag. Or I could cling to the party that most suits my values. But what will the candidates actually do? So back to the plans and the supposed detail! Dizzy making!

The velvet glove
Clive you think "Since I favor the iron fist in the velvet glove approach, Obama has it over McCain in an unsafe world (McCain is all fist)."
I just want to know when you've ever seen his iron fist? In foreign policy that is. When Russia invaded Georgia, he thought they were both guilty (another present! vote because he can't make a decision. As a liberal, he has trouble seeing right from wrong, good from evil, ally from not ally). The only iron fist I have observed is the power he wants to run our lives. And his plan for an armed civilian force that will be as "strong and well armed as the military" sounds to me like Brownshirts. Obama is just hiding the iron fist he plans to put up your wazoo in the velvet glove. He hates Americans so much that he has no problem sticking it to whitey. But, as a citizen of the world, he will find it hard to criticize any other nation, as I think he made clear on his European victory tour. Wake up and smell the coffee Clive.

Only one poll matters, and that's the final vote on election day. If we lose, we'll be gracious about it. Can you say the same?

Great Article!! KUDOS
Thanks for your great commentaries. You are one of my favorite authors. Could we make a push for you as a write-in candidate for President? Keep up the great work. You are truly an inspiration to all of us in America who are willing to keep on fighting for conservative values. Would you be willing to address some of the more revealing topics concerning Obama such as: (1) His initially being a member of the "New Party", (2) His support of the radical agenda in Kenya, (3) What exactly did Ayers teach in his radical schools with the $millions directed his way via Obama, (4) the conflict of Obama professing to be a Christian and supporting infanticide.
May God continue blessing you with continued inspirational thought!

Will, did it ever...
occur to you that you're an unmitigated attention hore? (misspelled to get past the filters)

Loser.

What vision?
The only vision of Senator Obama I see is his striving to get elected-anyway, anyhow. If anyone gets in the way, throw him or her under the bus. If he's get elected, I have a vision of him saying "What do I do next?" It's all about getting and wielding the power.

THE TRACK RECORD RIGHT ON GOLDBERG!
BOTH OBAMAS FATHERS WERE MUSLIM,HE SAYS HE CAN FIX EVERYTHING,ALL HIS FRIENDS ARE RADICAL LIBERAL DEMO-RATS!THE TRACK RECORD,REV WRONG,LOUIS FARACKKAN,THIS TRAIN IS OFF THE TRACK!

Hannah...
While I agree that it is of utmost importance for Obama that he be elected, I don't believe for a minute that he doesn't have an agenda. If I believed that, I wouldn't be nearly as afraid of him as I am. He has an agenda. He wants to push America ever closer to becoming a socialist state. He wants to disarm us. He wants to indoctrinate our children from their earliest years. That is, if they happen to make it out of the womb alive, as he's all for aborting them for any reason or no reason at all but convenience. He wants to take from the "rich" and give to the "poor." He may or may not know it, but what he wants to do will destroy our country.

Brilliant
Another home run Jonah. Swing voters stick in my craw. Either you're for America or against her. How uninformed can you possibly be?

Thanks again for making common sense a joy ride.

Exactly
That's exactly what I've been saying, with disgust, each time two clowns appear in the Presidential debates with lines like: No, my plan is better; no, I have a better plan. Sounds like children's game.

I'm choking of laughter listening to two Socialists pretending to be moderate politicians. They are exactly the same. They pretend to be doing a very important social assignment: discussing the ISSUES. In reality one is a cynic and a Communist, the other one is a disoriented mild Socialist.

I asked my friend, also watching the debates, what all the fuss is about? What plans? Like Stalin's five year plans? But as Jonah mentioned, Stalin had an internal police, the GULAG and enough bullets for everyone. As bullets stopped flying, Socialism collapsed. Plans, what plans? This is truly a "show about nothing".

This is all good for Obama: no one questions him what matters the most, instead blabbing along about some stinking plans to save the country and their beloved middle class and who will attack Pakistan first and Iran second or vice versa. Now the Iranians and the Pakistanis know what these infidel American Presidents have in stock for them (actually, one infidel and one convert).

And this stupid "independent" group that Frank Luntz digs into: Sir, why do you prefer Barak Obama? Answer: because he gives clear answers and looks Presidential. "Here ya go", says Mr. Luntz to the Fox News host. I'm sure Mr. Luntz makes good money, so he laughs later, at home.

This circus lasts almost two years detracting people from having a life.

One can still drink beer while watching, though.

response to PJal
I'm not certain whether the 42% is the number of people who are either the heads of families and of working age or have a job but pay no net taxes. Not everyone who works or heads a family pays taxes.

Obama's plan is purported to give a break to 95% of those who do pay taxes. This would be (100% - 42%) x 95% = 55% of the above "everyone who works or heads a family".

Is this what you were wondering about?

Plans and directions
One thing that looking at the details can tell an observer is the approach that is being taken, and what types of influences/effects the planner has included in their plans.

Politicians are rarely concerned with contingencies and trade-offs. A major part of my job is balancing positives and negatives to try to come out with a net positive. An example to a politician would be "if we work on this levee then the waterfowl in the area will be severely inconvenienced for 2-5 years. If we don't then there is a 1 in 100 year chance the levee will be swamped by a combination of storm surge and river swell". In my view of the world, inconvenienced birds aren't worth much. In an environmentalist's view it's worth a lot, while the chance of damage to human habitat is is worth less. If I know which way the the politician views the world, based on the plans that the politician has previously approved, I'm more likely to know if they want New Orleans to get flooded again.

aside to JPal
I think the "95% of Americans" in the article is either a typo or parody - when Barrack says that "95% of Americans" will get a tax cut, but not 95% pay taxes, that shows part of how he plans. He doesn't get the basic information about who the taxpaying base is. Sorry I didn't clue in before my earlier missive.

Jonah Goldberg
writes, "These voters are undecided not because they haven't been spoon-fed enough policy detail, but because they haven't been paying attention and haven't bothered to do even minimal research about the candidates."

Well said.

Sometimes go awry
The best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go awry, surely. However, the economy has beat the entire world about the head. Senator McCain suffers greatly from experience, judgment and character. Normally, this would be enough for mortals. For some reason, total Bush hatred has been fanned by Obama, forgetting that the Congress approval rating is much lower than Bush's rating. Second, Obama neglects the fact that President Carter through Reid have set up the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac failures, that is, the democrats share nearly ALL the blame for the basic financial woes we have now. That is the underlying major financial problem and yet voters want a participant in the process to somehow get us out of the problem. Just like having the fox watch over the chickens. Hillary Clinton remarked that we did not really know much about Obama, and I am afraid, she was right. I suggest we rename the Democratic Party to the Socialist American Democratic Party (the SAD Party). At least it would describe the direction we are about to go, to the further detriment of our republic. So vote for higher taxes, cut and run on defense, NO offense, long recovery time, government run health care, telling you when, where and IF you can get your medical needs met, total control and abuse of government against its citizens, and someone who can slide UNDER the belly of a snake. Wow, now THAT is a lot different than President Bush.

THE BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA PLAN

In the beginning was the Obama Plan (Change We Can Believe In!). And then came the Obama Assumptions. And the Obama Assumptions were without form. And the Obama Plan was without substance. And darkness fell upon the face of the Voters.

And the Voters spoke amongst themselves, saying, “This is a crock of you know what, and it stinks.” And the Voters went unto their Party Supervisors and said, “It is a pail of dung, and we can't live with the smell.”

And the Party Supervisors went unto their Party Managers, saying, “It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it.” And the Party Managers went unto their Party Directors, saying, “It is a vessel of fertilizer, and none may abide its’ strength.”

And the Party Directors spoke amongst themselves, saying to one another, “It contains that which aids Plant growth; and it is very strong.” And the Party Directors went to Joe Biden, saying unto him, “It promotes growth and it is very powerful.”

And Joe Biden went to Barack Obama, saying unto him, “This new Plan will actively promote the growth and vigor of the Nation with very powerful effects.”

And Barack Obama went back to the voters and repeated, "This new Plan will actively promote the growth and vigor of the Nation with very powerful effects."

And the Voters saw that it was good.

And the Plan became Policy.

And that, my friends, is how; “you know what” happens.

Question of this election

How many of us are willing to exchange democracy, liberty and capitalism for socialism?

It only takes 50.01 percent of those voting.

We are already 2/3 of the way there with Pelosi and Reid.

Youth volunteers?
I agree whole heartedly with this article, yet I would love to see B.O.'s plan for getting all the energetic and motivated youth of America to do all kinds of non paying volunteer work in exchange for college educations. This is probably Obama's most unrealistic, crazy, and largely ignored idea (and thats saying something). I am acquainted with quite a few college age kids and there is no way they are going to go along with that farce. If Obama could suceed with this nonsense, I would have to become a disciple of his because it truly would be a miracle.

Only ACORN will matter
Congressman John Boehner sent out an email message today insisting that all federal funding received by ACORN shoud be stopped because of their political activism. He acknowledged that the organization has long been suspected of voter fraud but when I called his office to see what they were doing to try to prevent fraud in this coming election, the staffer was very vague. So, apparently, Con. Beohner doesn't have a clue as to what can be done to stop ACORN, so no matter how wise the American voters become in deciding what criteria is correct when choosing a new President, we are going to get obama, and at that point, voter fraud will be the least of our worries. God help us all.

Criteria
To choose a leader or representative, perhaps the criteria should receive the following order, with most important first: (1) Demonstrated Character - how has the individual seeking office demonstrated by his actions the qualities of honesty, courage, diligence, and perserverance? (2) Ideology - how has he or she agreed with your cherished beliefs in past voting, speeches, and writings? (3) Plans - What does this person want to do with the office sought, and how flexible is this person to adopt another plan in accordance with his own beliefs and the needs of the nation if necessary? (4) Ability - How effective is this person in communicating direction, articulating beliefs, marshalling support, and understanding the merits and deficiencies of the ideas of others? No individual alive today is flawless in all of these aspects. On the basis of these prioritized criteria, however, I intend to vote for John McCain.

5 Stars jonah
You're quickly becoming my favorite columnist.

Other than their plans the only thing we have to differentiate the candidates are their track records, and their character.

While McCain has made all too frequent sallies across the proverbial aisle, he still has a strong conservative record, and for the most part, a record of doing the right thing.

We know enough about his past to know his character (minus the 1st marriage) is as close to sterling as you get these days.

On the other hand we have Obama.

Voting record? Well if you count the gold star for attendance, and voting present, his record is basically non-existent.

Character? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Just because you ARE a character, doesn't mean you Have character.

Here's a little history lesson for ya.

Just 4 years ago this week, John Kerry was 1o points ahead.

8 Years ago, Gore was 15 points ahead.

in 1988 Dukakis was up by 30 points.

in 1984 Mondale was up by 18 points.

Hmm, how many of them won?

Ever hear about counting chickens while the're still in the eggs?

Keep getting cocky Josh, it will mean a large number of your "Voting Base" will stay home on Nov 4, because you "have it in the bag".

The LAST Black President
Obama may become the first black President, but he will certainly also be its last (at least from the Democrat Party). Obama will be a total disaster and will destroy the economy. He is gearing up to make the same mistakes made by FDR, who prolonged the Great Depression for 10 long years because he, like Obama, had no knowledge of fundamental economics.

Obama will end up the most hated President in history, out-doing both Bush and Carter. And with Democrats controlling both the Senate and the House, Obama and the Democrats will have no one to blame. The leftists will be in total charge.

It may not take until 2012 for Americans to hate Obama. Americans muddled through with FDR for 10 years, but they won't be anywhere near as patient with Obama. The Democrats may LOSE BIG in the 2010 mid-terms. By 2012 the Democrat Party will be in shambles. Obama will lose the nomination in 2012.

Frankly, let the leftists screw up and suffer. I'm on my way to Texas or Alaska to secede from the Union. The "Republic of Texas" will not make Obama's mistakes, and it won't sell him any oil either. (And it will have border security.) To Hell with Obama and his fellow socialists. May those who vote for him suffer the most.
