Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The U.S. economy - yes, that economy - grew at a 3.3 percent annual rate last quarter. This no doubt caused consternation at the highest levels of the Democratic Party, perhaps forcing some to consider a new convention film at the last minute: "Dude, Where's My Recession?"

To hear the Democrats at their convention this week, you would get the sense that a recession is merely a technical term for the worst human misery ever visited upon a once-great people. You'd think Americans were listening to the Democratic speeches as they huddled around their kitchen tables - if they hadn't already been used for firewood - deciding which of their children to pack off to the orphanage and how much tree bark they can afford to eat next week.

Thursday night, Barack Obama proclaimed: "Our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more." He went on to describe an America reminiscent of "The Grapes of Wrath" (if not "Mad Max").

But this was a weeklong theme. Over and over again, the Democrats insisted that the "American dream" is being snuffed out, crushed, beaten, stabbed and quite possibly dismembered in President Bush's West Wing bathtub, where Bush and Dick "The Cleaner" Cheney can dissolve the remains in sulfuric acid.

On Wednesday night, just in case some village waif somewhere hadn't already heard, Joe Biden reminded the world that he rides Amtrak home to Delaware from Washington. Apparently not since Gunga Din has there been a more heroic commute. And we've now learned that when he gazes out the window of his barreling locomotive, he can "almost hear" the conversations in the houses he sees whizzing by.

He "almost hears" things with an awful lot of specificity: "Should Mom move in with us now that Dad's gone? Fifty, sixty, seventy dollars just to fill up the gas tank? How in God's name, with winter coming, how are we gonna heat the home? Another year, no raise? Did you hear? Did you hear they may be cutting our health care at the company?" Super Joe even hears people asking him, "How are we gonna retire, Joe?"

Is there nobody between D.C. and Delaware talking about "American Idol" or their kids' school play or how they're sick of meatloaf?

Obviously, there is real economic pain out there. Food and energy costs are rising too fast and by too much. The mortgage crisis is real.

But while Americans don't like the direction the country is heading, and hate high gas prices, they're pretty satisfied with their lives. Some 94 percent of Americans polled by Harris Interactive this month said they were satisfied with the lives they lead. According to Gallup, only 9 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with their jobs and only 13 percent are dissatisfied with their job security. The unemployment rate is at a five-year high of 5.7 percent, but it wasn't long ago when that was considered close to full employment.

"Ladies and gentlemen ..." mourned Senator Biden, the "American dream feels like it's slowly slipping away. ... I've never seen a time when Washington has watched so many people get knocked down without doing anything to help them get back up."

Quick question: Was this the same Washington that oversaw the largest expansion of entitlements (a.k.a. the prescription drug benefit) since the Great Society? Was this the Washington that recently started doling out $168 billion in stimulus checks?

Biden's keen ability to hear only awful news is symptomatic of a Democratic Party that is not merely eager to return to the White House, but desperate to launch a new New Deal. The mind-set is on display in almost every speech. Hillary Clinton decried the policy of "giving windfall profits" to oil companies. Clinton seems to believe that all of the money, everywhere, is the government's, and your profits are a gift. Windfall profits are defined as too big a gift from government. Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, borrowing a line from Obama, complained that John McCain wants to give "$4 billion in tax breaks for big oil?"

No. McCain wants to lower the corporate tax rate to make us more competitive with our rivals. Yes, oil companies are included, but by this logic (as my colleague Ramesh Ponnuru notes), Obama's middle-class tax cut will be a tax break for hookers and serial killers.

The greatest irony is that the one area where the Democrats are right about American pain - high gas prices - is the one area where they are most reluctant to do anything substantial. Why? Because global warming appears to be their best shot at finding a major crisis to justify a new New Deal.

The bad news for the throngs in Denver is that Americans aren't as miserable as the Democrats need them to be.

Socialist Governance
The Democrat nominee has accepted his annointment to be their president of the United States.

He has not been elected and he is already taking almost a $trillion dollars of our money to finance his Socialism.

Senator Obama sponsored the "Global Poverty Act" (S.2433) which calls for spending $845 billion, 0.7% of our GNP, over what the U.S. already sends to the UN. This money goes mainly to feed, clothe, shelter, educate, medicate and arm Third World Muslim countries who hate the USA. The GPA (S.2433) also eliminates small caliber weapons in the USA! http://kilosparksitup.blogspot.com/2008/02/more-on-barack- obama-s2433-global.html

Obama asks the Howard University faculty and students, “Are we willing to make the investments in genuine, equal opportunity in this country?” He says, "People aren't looking for charity. We talk about welfare and we talk about poverty, but what people really want is fairness.” “They want people paying their fair share of taxes. They want that money allocated fairly.”

Larry Kudlow, Economics Editor-National Review says, “Obama wants to spend $150 billion on a green-energy plan, $60 billion to establish an infrastructure investment bank, $65 billion to expand health insurance”. Socialism is and has always been a miserable failure round the world.

We know it's propaganda...
...but Senator McCain is in agreement with a scary percentage of it.

The problem for Americans in November 2008 will be choosing between two presidential candidates neither of whom should be trusted with executive power. One favors restrictions on political expression, in clear violation of the Constitution; the other dispatches goon squads to harass media hosts who dare to have Left-disfavored guests. One opines that guns belong in the hands of law enforcement and military personnel, and no one else; the other says little but has allied with the most anti-gun coalition in American history. One speaks of cap-and-trade energy policies to combat "global warming;" the other has said that the price of a gallon of gas isn't high enough yet. One leaves a bad taste in the mouth; the other tempts one to suicide. The Old Media heavily favor the latter.

Decisions, decisions...

Francis, go with your gut and against
the MSM, they are leading the charge to marxist socialism, not even realizing that if they get what they want, they will pay the highest price. Stupid leftists!

I too, dislike McCain for many reasons, but the more I see of B. Hussein's Nazi tactics against free speech and the lockstep adulation of his flock, the more I am convinced that he is the Anti-Christ.

"Everybody I know has a big but."
I am not sure what Mr. Goldberg expects the Democrats to say: "Gee, President Bush has done a great job and we don't see any reason why you should vote for us? " or "If you can't bring yourself to vote for McCain, try Obama he might do better?" The purple bandaid idea was used the last election. I suppose they could have worn stings around their fingers to symbolize McCain's memory problem.

The central theme of the Democratic Convention was about how we allocate resources domestically and the use of preemptive force in dealing with foreign affairs. Conservatives have always done a better job of governing, the problems is that it has been a long time since Republicans nominated one.

The Future
Don't let the voters consider past the next election cycle. Don't let them think about the imminent threat of the baby boomers' retirement and the social security and medicare benefits that workers will be pay for through their noses. Don't remind the voters about the national debt.

Don't remind them of it because neither party has any plan to address it.

Let's just continue as is and hope that the proverbial doo-doo doesn't hit the proverbial fan while I'm in office.

economic disaster
tell you what. let the economy grow at about the rate it has been growing for another , say 18 months. then let the other important economic indicators keep on doing what they have been doing. rising unemployment. lower annul spendable income per individiual and per family. increase in foreclosures. bank failure stay the same. uunemployment insurance running out for more and more people . etc.. keep this up,and add inflation higher than it has been in 40 years and no end seemingly insight and you nad better get the national guard back fom iraq, we will need them here. we are patient but there are limits. .

Babies Crying in Terror

The 'Born Alive' baby who has known the closest contact with another human any human can experience - the baby has been inside another human for months.

The baby has kicked, stretched and some even suck their thumbs. Every need has been met by its human host - shelter, nourishment and safety.

Suddenly one day the baby is attacked with chemicals and poisons.

The baby enters a world bent on death and destruction towards its life.

The baby has never seen a butterfly, puppy, pretty colors or things all babies enjoy or had any human say I love you.

The baby enters the world in excruciating pain and the best trained Medical experts in the world refuse the baby any aid - in a hospital - where all facilities are available and the Doctors have sworn to protect all human life - except his.

The baby is thrown on a cold table and left to die in some hidden place.

The baby struggles to breathe because a human is born with the human will to survive. The baby cries in terror and sobs for help - that never comes - no one cares.

The innocent baby tries to live with every breath and dies alone, abandoned like a used kleenex, never having experienced anything but pain, rejection and hatred.

When the baby finally dies a death of torture and the ultimate rejection any human can receive, it is such a worthless human it doesn't even have a 'Death Certificate' issued that it ever existed.

For a few minutes, hours or days, that baby WAS an American Citizen, that should have received all of the 'Rights and Protections' under law, that any other American Citizen should have.

Michelle and Barack Obama and most Democrats, have done everything humanly possible, to make sure this baby does NOT even receive any pain medication.

The Economy and CNN
I watched about 10 minutes of a panel discussion about the “economy” on CNN this morning. I should have know what a bust it was going to be when I saw that the token economist was Paul Krugman. I mean, in order to talk about the economy one must have an economist right?

I don’t know what the rest of the discussion was about but they talked largely about the housing market during the ten minutes I watched and it was ALL negative. One woman actually made the statement that the housing market wasn’t in that bad of a condition and that it had been in much worse shape back in the 70s (Carter years with 20% interest rates). Of course Paul Krugman could not allow that to stand so he made the bald faced lie that the housing market was in the worst shape since the great depression. That brought up the next round of discussion.

The question to the panel was “are we currently in a recession”. I kid you not, they actually asked this question and also couched it in the terms of “a depression”, which they defined as a long term recession”. Not one of the panelist even attempted to answer the question, as asked. That in itself should tell you what the bias of this panel was. The CNN commentator set the stage when he said “there are many definitions of a recession, including the old definition of two consecutive quarters of negative growth”. What a crock of sh!t, that is the ONLY definition of a recession and I am sure CNN will go back to using that definition when a Democrap is in office. The rest of the panelo turned itself inside out to make the economy look bad and not a single one mentioned the revised numbers for growth of 3.5%.

Media bias at it’s best…”CNN Investigates”. We should see that program retitled to “CNN Lies and Propaganda”.

Surely not an expansion quarter...

With a 3.3% growth rate, it looks as if many Americans are making the decision my first (and best) boss elaborated upon some 40 years ago...he said "If there's a recession, I think I'll choose not to particpate"...well, it appears there is quite a bit of non-participation and that some of the participants should reconsider their decisions...

All men are created equal...then they begin making choices...

Joe's commute
Hmmm., living here in Maryland Joe probably speeds right past my house. But I guess he has never heard me. A lot of the talk here in my house is about what idiots the Democrats in congress are, what cowards they are.And really how lucky we are to live in the U.S..And we marvel at what a strong country we are...,in spite of what Reid, Pelosi, Murtha,Schumer,Durbin,Boxer,Feingold, Levin, and so many other Dems. have tried to do to this country.

I wish he had heard us when he was speeding by as we discussed Harry Reid, with his hands raised over his head in victory screeching,"We KILLED the Patriot Act", or when the N.Y. Times ran Move On's General Betrayus ad.We even discussed Biden's ridiculous plan to divide Iraq into three separate areas.Apparently Joe's got SELECTIVE hearing. The same kind of hearing that he exercises when casting votes in the Senate.

To Mr. Goldberg
Sorry...,I went on and on, much like Joe Biden. I forgot to say, wonderful piece Mr. Goldberg. I gave it a 5...,it deserves a 10!

Economy well it has it uniqueness.....
A depression is only to those that do not have a job. All others it is a recession or nothing at all.

Interesting, but a two sided coin.

Now you present the economy as not all that bad so more of the same is alright.

Bush, McCain.....

Bail outs, pork, deficiet.....

That will eventually bring the roooster home to roost and I want reform and anything less is just, talk.

Money to big oil
Obama will elilminate all the money going to the rich and oil companies so he can give it to the the poor utility companies, auto makers, aother select industries who will dance to the democrat the world is ending tune; also receiving money will be the poor like T. Boone Pickens, Nancy Pelosi and politicos with money invested in such schemes as the carbon offsets.

The Wall Street Journel sited a study showing the government currently pays out forty six billion to cover what the medically uninsured do not. Mr. Obama wants to cover the uninsured in the United States by having a program that will cost one hundred ten billion. This is what democrats call progess?

Last time the government tried to fix Medicare doctors bailed from the system as they could not keep up with costs.

Sure hope that our wonderful politicians, who will save us with a medical system that requires the masses to stand in lines at government medical centers, are not so inconvenienced? Maybe we can pay to have doctors go directly to their offices. We might also have to doctors specially assigned to important people like Oprah, Brian Williams, Kieth Oberman and Chris Mathews because as we know they are likely to be standing in line with the rest of us.

Let lower health care service to the masses be the substitute for the current system of lower health care for the poor.

For charley
"Bush, McCain.....

Bail outs, pork, deficiet....."

Bush CUT the spending requests of Congress in every fiscal budget of his administration.

McCain has voted AGAINST pork at nearly every opportunity.

You have the right idea about federal spending. It must be reduced. But it is too simplistic to simply blame whoever is President and then equate him with the next nominee of the same party.

Bush's approval is somewhere in the 30-40% range because he started his 2nd term with only 52% of the vote and has since lost support from right because of spending and immigration.

The Democrat Congress, on the other hand, started witha 37% approval in 2006 and is down to 7-9% because (1) they lost the support of liberals by failing to lose the war in Iraq and (2) they never gained any support from anyone (like yourself) who is concerned about controlling spending and/or balancing the budget.

I feel your desire for change, too, but federal spending will only get worse, not better, if Obama is elected. And he will add to the budget woes by allowing the tax cuts to expire and even adding new taxes. These moves will REDUCE revenue to the Treasury at the same time he is INCREASING SPENDING.

Obama is a fiscal disaster waiting to happen.

They lie.
It's what they do. Every four years. Magically, all the homeless disappeared from the news; poverty did too unless the unwashed voters need to be flailed for more cash for the chronically undeserving while our former First Felon was in the White House; another empty suit elected in the main because the MSM repeated the mantra "...worst economy since the Great Depression," on their 24/7 propaganda broadcasts. They know they lie; but it's what their base wants to hear and the MSM abets it.

Not for a moment
Will I consider voting for Obama. I am not moved by the coronation occuring in Denver. I do not allow an earthly King, I am an American. I still remember the Soldier's Creed I memorized 40 years ago in Basic Training.

"I am an American Fighting Man. I serve in the forces, which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense."

There is more, but you get the point, Barack Obama cannot blind me with fancy rhetoric. I believe in something much bigger than he can ever be.

I know there is a period of financial trouble in the country today. I know President Bush has some responsibility for this. But, the Pelosi/Reid consortium actually owns it, and I plan to try to help them find a new job come this November. Perhaps you would care to assist me in this endeavor?

Gad!
How proud must the citizens of Delaware be when Biden does that "awful" commute!!! Wow! What strength of character to endure "the commute!"

Ken, RIGHT ON!!! How about an amendment to the Constitution which allows these clowns 12 yrs. swilling at the Public trough and they can NEVER run again for ANY political office other than the Presidency?

LC, he probably did and decided you were not worth listening to because you are not a "victim!" You seen the dems can only help the victims hence their constant search!

Critical mass
The Marxists(Democrats) are seeking a critical mass of voters who are receiving the free ride. Once they achieve that the meritocracy in America will be doomed. The Marxists will have a willing electorate who will vote to confiscate more and more from the productive while insuring the political/financial future of the Marxists. The productive will then truly be slaves to the parasites. At that point elections will be decided at gunpoint for that is the only way the productive will regain their freedom. .
