Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

At a recent meeting of city officials in Dallas County, Texas, a small racial brouhaha broke out. County commissioners were hashing out difficulties with way the central collections office handles traffic tickets. Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield found himself guilty of talking while white. He observed that the bureaucracy "has become a black hole" for lost paperwork.

Fellow Commissioner John Wiley Price took great offense, shouting, "Excuse me!" That office, the black commissioner explained, has become a "white hole."

Seizing on the outrage, Judge Thomas Jones demanded that Mayfield apologize for the "racially insensitive analogy," in the words of the Dallas Morning News' City Hall Blog.

Houston Chronicle science blogger Eric Berger notes that everyone should be "very glad that the central collections office has not become a white hole, a theoretical object that ejects matter from beyond its event horizon, rather than sucking it in. It wouldn't be fun for Dallas to find itself so near a quasar."

Maybe so, but speaking metaphorically, if it were a white hole, that might suggest central collections was actually doing its job, ejecting paperwork in a timely fashion.

Call me nostalgic, but there was a time when this sort of stupidity actually generated controversy. Remember the Washington, D.C., official who used the word "niggardly" correctly in a sentence only to lose his job? That at least generated debate.

But these days, stories like this vomit forth daily and, for the most part, we roll our eyes, chuckle a bit and shrug them off.

Obviously, there's something to be said for ignoring the childish grievance-peddling that motivates so much of this nonsense. But the simple fact is that ignoring political correctness has done remarkably little to combat it. Meanwhile, people who make a big deal about it are often cast as the disgruntled obsessive ones.

The only people allowed to take political correctness seriously are the writers for "South Park," "Family Guy," "The Simpsons" and the like. Of course, they take it seriously because it's their bread and butter to mock the absurd pieties of daily life. But nearly everywhere else, the rule of thumb is that we should either defer to this stuff or quietly ignore it.

Now, I don't want to paint with too broad a brush. There is stuff that gets labeled political correctness that is entirely defensible. Because of the erosion of traditional authority that has marked the last half-century, for good and ill, society has been forced to re-create what defines good manners largely from scratch. Women, blacks and other historically marginalized groups have finally and deservedly gained an equal place in society. Treating fellow citizens with respect and dignity shouldn't be lumped in with the more radical agenda that also exploits political correctness.

For example, ditching the word "colored" from the vocabulary when it comes to describing blacks might have been seen as political correctness by many in the 1960s (though the phrase wasn't widely used), but that in no way means it wasn't the right thing to do. Or consider the idiots who shouted "iron my shirt" at Hillary Clinton (assuming it wasn't staged to help Clinton burnish her victim status). That's not bravely fighting political correctness. It's just rude and stupid.

But there's a separate agenda that parasitically clings to the more defensible aim of crafting new good manners. The left uses Western society's admirable desire not to offend to bludgeon competing ideas and arguments. Inconvenient facts are ridiculed as "insensitive." Refusal to go along with the multicultural agenda, for example, is cast as a sign of backwardness and bigotry. We're told we must have a frank conversation about race, but when conservatives take up the challenge, they are immediately demonized for the insensitivity of their honesty.

One of my favorite recent examples is when Newt Gingrich argued last year that bilingualism makes it more difficult for Hispanics to learn English, which has the unfortunate result of leaving some Latinos trapped in the "ghetto." He was immediately denounced by the usual suspects and forced to issue an apology, which he promptly did.

Harvard President Lawrence Summers was tarred and feathered after merely hypothesizing about the data on cognitive differences between the sexes.

In Britain this week, the National Children's Bureau advised that day-care centers treat aversion to unfamiliar foreign food by children as "racist." It was also reported that two children were punished for their bigoted refusal to kneel and pray to Allah in a religion class.

This strikes me as something beyond mere tolerance. This is will-to-power masquerading as tolerance. This sort of thing needs to be resisted, because there is no end to where thinking like this can lead. Indeed, if it doesn't cause too much offense, one could even say it's a black hole.

Well, shouldn't someone

tell Stephen Hawking that he should now be studying African-American Holes?

And why does that sound faintly obscene to me?

This guy's a county commissioner?
Greg Gutfeld said it best last night on Red Eye. This is what happens when you combine stupidity and hypersensitivity. What an absolute doofus.

Do we REALLY have to report
(& "debate") on each and every white/black insensitive racist comment that makes its way into a news cycle?

That's one of the things I hate about Larry Elder. Under the guise of "examining" racial incidents, he makes his cheap obvious political points. He panders to his listenership and sokes the flames. We are writing columns and "debating" race issues in such a yellow, National Enquirer-ish, callous, salacious way.

Jonah, was the "white hole"/"black hole" incident you relayed above really so interesting and useful as an allegory not to pass up? Seems to me your goal is not quite honorable, there's something not quite lucid and instructive focusing on foolish ill-spoken racial phrases or the occasional "radical agenda" to point out "political correctness".

Instead of ellucidating and analyzing racial tensions, you, like Larry Elder, appear to wallow in it. It's all grist and fodder for your mills.

I saw this also
Good grief. I rolled my eyes, I didn't chuckle this time but, I did shrug it off I admit.

Hey Brian, hope you're doing well. African-American Holes. Ya, sounds a little weird. I guess we should start a discussion thread on what word to replace black with since the mere hyphenated use of it can cause severe distress to our hyphenated fellow citizens. I also think, feeling very sensitive at the moment don't cha know, that the term cracker should henceforth be banned from the English language. We also need to find a replacement for those crunchy salty things we use with soup.

C'mon, Will

It's so fantastically absurd it's definitely worth reading about and commenting on.

Hey, Hitch! How ya doing?

We need to rename that fourth suit in a deck of cards, too. You know, the ones that aren't hearts, clubs, or diamonds.

OMG!

Now we can't even say "black hole?"

A black hole is merely a huge empty void that really sucks.

Kinda like the Democrat(ick) Party!!!

BrianR

Spit take alert!

Just so you know,
I write as a Floridian transplanted in Texas....

John Wiley Price is an embarrassment--if a colorful and entertaining one.

But they're everywhere. I just saw a lady on Fox tonight who's protesting the "Men at Work" signs on the highway.

Sometimes it's funny; mostly it's tiresome!!!

BrianR
Good call. I will try to do some research. Who makes playing cards? Are there any remaining sport mascots that can in any way, shape, or form be possibly construed by and offensive to any hyphenated group not yet well known? Inquiring minds need to know. Perhaps some one could put out a manual or something that we could all study in advance so as not to use any banned terms.

Rose, yours was a riot, too!

Spew Alert!

Hahahaha, Hitch!

This thread promises to be a real hoot!

Okay, now I'm REALLY puzzled

I clicked on the picture, figuring it's the poor schmoe at the meeting looking sandbagged and dazed.

Turns out it's a picture of the Russian composer Shostakovich.

Soooooooooooooo..... what exactly does that have to do with this column???????

I just had a thought
We used to play a game in college with cards that was named after that particular suit you mentioned. The way we used to cavalierly toss that term around as though it meant what we thought it meant instead of what it might potentially mean to someone of hyphenated background that heard it without the proper context. Oh, the horror. I might need re-educating. They say acknowledging the problem is the first step. Any libs out there willing to take me under your wing and retrain me from the error of my ways. I just don't think I can really get this multi cultural thing. Help!

Talk about a black hole, is not
An African American vagina.
It has to do with something in Space

quote:
"Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield found himself guilty of talking while white. He observed that the bureaucracy "has become a black hole" for lost paperwork.

Fellow Commissioner John Wiley Price took great offense, shouting, "Excuse me!" That office, the black commissioner explained, has become a "white hole."

Appears John Wiley Price associates a phenomena of Space to a street walker.

I would say that is as racist as it gets.

Black 'A'hole
"Seizing on the outrage, Judge Thomas Jones demanded that Mayfield apologize for the "racially insensitive analogy,"

I can't imagine appearing before this demented ignoramus in court. He should be defrocked of his black (white?) robe immediatly!

will
DUH.......... There were black holes before there was an African continent, much less Africans of any description. This just shows how pitifully and painfully stupid PC is.

PC has done more to limit free speech than any law, i.e. McCain-Feingold.

Goldberg
Anyone who agrees with Jonah Goldberg is racist by association. There I said it before the libs could.

AH Jonah
You chide us for ignoring this glaring shift to PC-ism all over the country. The truth is we have no choice, we have been forced to eat this daily ration of human excretement on a daily basis at work, on the TV, and sometimes even in our own private lives when away from our homes.

When it is done by a black politician as in this case it doesn't matter what they say that is offensive to white people, the more offensive the more likely they are to be reelected. In fact, they get reelected if cought with huge sums of bribe money in the freezer.

If it is at work the "company policy" is for PC-ism and if you fight it, not onoly do you not get promotions and raises, but you are likely to get the door as well.

As for the white politicians like Gingrich apologizing for using language that is NOT some kind of racist thing, it is because the Republican Party lost it's manhood a long time ago. If it had been me I would have told whoever to ESAD.

Nobody else has said it yet...
...so I will.

This County Commissioner probably didn't hold his own in the classroom. How do you make it through high-school and not know what a black hole is?

How is it that the entire black community isn't embarrassed by his stupidity?

Steve O
Hold his own? He probably dropped out of school in the 5th grade and opened a pharmicutical operation on the corner.

Black Holes...

Black Holes...

As I recall, from many years ago, Light is affected by gravity.

It takes a very large gravitational body to show any measurable effect.

A few years back, this was essentially proven when a 'known' Star (i.e. 'Known' position) became visible at the edge of our Solar disk before it should have appeared. Thus, it was generally accepted that the gravity of the Sun, bent the light from this Star.

It is also generally accepted that the gravity from a Black Hole, is so great, that light cannot escape.

Many also believed, for a long time, that nothing could escape from a Black Hole, but I believe this has been questioned lately.

No, I am not a Physicist nor an Astronomer, perhaps one is here, and could explain this better.

PC ~ Ignorance vs Stupidity...

PC ~ Ignorance vs Stupidity...

Simplest definition I ever saw:

An ignorant person does not know.

A stupid person never will know.

Put the two together in one person, and you have just described a leftist.

~~~~~~~~
We could expound upon this to almost any length, but I will be brief.
An average Eighth grader of the 1940s had equivalent knowledge of an average High school Graduate of the 1970s, and an average College Graduate of today.
I will cite an example : Barak Hussein Obama's "57 States".
Our School System has been under assault since Pres. Wilson, and was being taken over by the Commies from that era onward. The quality of same has been in decline also.
The quality of too many School Systems is asymptotically approaching 'Comic Book' level.
There is a cool poster named Flagwaver who has a blog titled Calling a Spade a Spade. He is a hardnosed unflinching conservative and just the type of black person to whom i pay a lot of attention. He likes the term African-American. It still grates on me, but after listening to his preferences, and knowing he is a solid thinker and contributor, i concede he (and anyone else who wishes) is entitled to be referred to as he prefers. People like Flagwaver have the self-confidence and sense of priority to give expressions like black hole exactly non-importance they deserve. Flagwaver makes it easier to see hypersensitive idiots like that councilman as exactly the trivial people they are.
Goldberg wrote...
"Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield found himself guilty of talking while white. He observed that the bureaucracy "has become a black hole" for lost paperwork.
I truly wish I could have seen the expression on the Commisioner's face at that outburst of 'Ignorance AND Stupidity' !
Classic, I bet.
Good article.
Agree with most comments here.
Perhaps the best way to obliterate this dreaded political correctness is thru humor, biting sarcasm.
But that requires a special gift, an ability most of us don't possess(including myself).
Many of us lack the mental dexterity and quick wit to respond instantaneously, with ridicule and sarcasm, when confronted by someone employing p.c. against us.
Most of us just do what Newt does....respond by apologizing for supposedly giving "offense".
I include myself in Newt's category, either apologizing or slinking off into sullen silence.
And it is a damned shame.
Oh for a quick, devastating wit, and a devil- may-care attitude to go along with it.
Good morning.
My memory is that it was Einstein that first proposed that light would be "bent" by gravity as it moved past a gravoty source. This theory was a source of debate for many years, until accurate instruments were developed and an eclipse supported his theory many years later. By this time, Einstein had moved to other areas of thought. When informed his theory had been "proved", he murmured So i was right about that, and moved on. I put proved in quotes because after 50 years as an engineer, i tend to think of all physical "facts" as merely the best model available of what is actually happening. A good many of these working models conflict, but are useful in differing circumstances.
jerebaub
I claim no gift for wit or biting sarcasm, but i've brought PC BS to a halt more than once. At a discussion of the Watts riots, a black co-worker claimed the riots were justified because it was necessary to get attention. I remarked in a tone of reason that all that property destruction wasn't necessary, just kill a cop. Silence. Change of subject.
"Black hole?" Poor Carl Sagan is
probably turning in his grave....
Goldberg writes: "We're told we must have a frank conversation about race, but when conservatives take up the challenge, they are immediately demonized for the insensitivity of their honesty."
ISN'T THAT the truth!!!
This Wiley guy MUST be a nut-case....
pistol
Good for you.
Except there is no justification for killing a cop, and I am sure you would agree(with the possible exception of the situation depicted in The Godfather movie).
I was on a political chatline(instantaneous chat with immediate responses and retorts from those logged onto the site)where a couple of folks kept interrupting the POLITICAL discussion with remarks about how white women really crave the huge sexual "endowment"(for want of a more descriptive term)of black males, and after a few such disruptions from these folks, I posted something to the effect that perhaps the supposed huge endowment of black males was God's way of compensating them for being a little lacking in endowment in the intellectual or intelligence arena.
Now, a minute or so elapsed, including a couple of guffows from those in attendance on this chatline, when I suddenly found myself summarily disconnected from the site.
The server sent me a notice someone had complained about my "observations".
But it struck me as a bit hypocritical that folks were permitted to say really insulting things about women and socalled attraction to certain qualities allegedly attributed to a certain race, but I was disconnected for making a sarcastic rejoinder.
Perhaps I was slightly out of line, but I did not start it, did not bring up the subject, but I was the one terminated from the site, and warned not to do it again.
My first chatline experience with political correctness.
You're a Pistol...
'Savage 99', as I always translate your various guises...
I was certain that Einstein's famous equation was the source of this, but could not "prove" it. I only have 29 years working as an Engineer, but this IS my Fourth career.
I spent 6 in the Navy, 14 doing manual labor while working my way through College, 3 as a Professor teaching Electrical Engineering, and 29 as an Electrical Engineer 'Title'. Actual job turned out to be Manufacturing Engineer and used Electrical, Mechanical, Thermodynamics, Hydraulic, Pneumatic, and other skills. Fun job !
I do hesitate when using the word "Prove or Proof". Due to the mass ignorance of the masses; many do not know the meaning of words, so I tend to use phrases far beyond their ken, such as "Generally believed". This so confounds the trolls, they move on, concluding I am an idiot. Two and three syllable words cause this effect in trolls.
OBTW, I have a Savage Pistol. A 22-250 Striker.
If they thought that was "racist"
God forbid that they ever listen to a real astrophysicist teaching a college course and describing the various known or postulated features of a black hole.
There is a specific perimeter of its gravity well, within which the escape velocity theoretically is greater than c (standard notation for the speed of light, 186,262 mi/sec or 300,000 km/sec). Named for the theoretical physicist who postulated its existence in the early 1960s, it is called the (ulp!) Schwartzschild Radius. (Pronounced "shwartz-shield", BTW.)
I can already visualize the P.C. crowd going into full-tilt Mortally Offended Righteous Indignation Conniption Fit Mode.
Not that they're every really out of that mode, of course.
I do notice that 'lefties' often claim superior intelligence, but their thought patterns, lack of vocabulary, poor spelling and poor writing skills belie this claim.
Thus, IMHO, 'intelligent lefty' is an oxymoron.
Of course there is no justification for killing a cop. My co-worker knew it and so did all there. It was reducto ad absurdiam (spelling), a crushing tactic when applicable. It works in groups of normal and above normal intelligence. It doesn't work all that well on sites controlled by PC folks with agendas and or questionable judgement. I have been banned from TH often. I don't know why. I speak the truth as i perceive it, don't resort to epithets, hold most posters, including libs, in positive regard, and ignore those i see as having crass motives. Perhaps i get flagged for striking too close to uncomfortable truth. I have never deliberately flagged anyone,(did it once by click error) believing in freedom of speech.
John Swinton, former chief of staff, New York Times, when called upon to give a toast before the New York Press Club (1953) said this:
"There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know it would never appear in print.
I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out in the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before 24 hours my occupation would be gone.
The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread.
You know it and I know it, so what folly is this toasting an independent press. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings, we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes"
Part I
What Should Be Done
It is a truism in life that bullies eventually have to be confronted and fought. Once they sense weakness, they will prey upon it forever.
Such is the case with minorities and their socialist white allies. All this chattering amongst ourselves as we submit to their oppression is meaningless.
Lenis is supposed to have once said something like, "Advance, probe with your bayonets. Where you find steel, retreat. Otherwise, advance". I may have botched this somewhat, but you get the picture.
The Left are masters of the black arts of words and psychology. Like the old Soviets, they relied on the victim for much of their powers. They understood that to have true power over subjects it is important for those subjects to defeat themselves.
"They're merely words. Just sign the confession. Just issue the apology. Why are you afraid of words."
Rather than physically abuse the target, they usually get the target to beat himself up. Thus, when a white person or conservative is accused of insensitivity, that person usually follows the script and humbles himself and thereby confesses his "sin". He is forever, then, discredited.
Remember what happened to Trent Lott, Don Imus, Michael Richards and every single other white "thought criminal". Did their humiliating apologies restore their reputations?
Stand up to these race bullies! Force them to persue their ridiculous charges and make fools out of themselves. Don't let them make you defeat yourselves.
Liberal Tyranny
Liberals and Democrats are tyrannized and oppressed by their own emotions.
Liberals and Democrats do not use reason and logic to decide their postions but rather emotions and only their emotions are correct.
Liberals and Democrats believe moral values are based on emotional responses to the 'current truth' and whatever might be emotionally acceptable and only their feelings matter.
Liberals and Democrats believe that if they do not smoke cigarettes all cigarettes should be banned.
Liberals and Democrats find they do not 'like' guns then all guns should be banned.
Liberals and Democrats think if they do not like certain words then these words must be banned in the name of 'Freedom FROM Speech' and 'Freedom OF Speech' is an outmoded concept that is not acceptable in the 'Current Truth' of their ideal society.
Liberals and Democrats demand laws that coerce others to become slaves of emotion instead of using those 'Horrid Words' like reason and logic through 'Political Correctness'.
Retired Geek
Swinton said that in 1953, and now its much worse. The fact is that neither reporters nor politicians really know anything about what they talk about. To have lawyer-educated miscreant narcissists in charge of solving our energy problem is like hauling a junkie in off the street to remove an appendix. God looks out for fools, drunks and the good ol'USA.
Tyrany of the Minorities
Just how much of a minority can a minority be when they can demand that even the slightest and unintended so called "offense" be corrected by an immediate groveling apology and it's given? In this country the so called minorities of which there are official ones and many unofficial ones, mostly anything not white except females who are also included in the minority group, seem to be ever offended by one thing or the other. These groups far outnumber the white males that these groups are constantly perturbed at. Every minority quota, every civil rights law, every hate crime law, every equal rights law, et al is aimed at the white male. All of these minority laws always end up serving the majority. Even the slightest notice anywhere in this society can easily detect who are the most rude and crude and it isn't the white male.
Pistol, Part II
I get 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards. It has accounted for about 20 groundhogs, from my kitchen window.
It carries a 3 X 9 Variable High Quality Scope.
It has a muzzle brake, on a 14" barrel, and can be quite noisy. One day four groundhogs were out back, and in my haste, I forgot my Ear-muffs. BAAAD mistake. Ears rang for 2 weeks or more. Anyway, during the course of the day, I got all four, one at a time.
I never forgot the 'muffs' since.
~~~

Yes! I do know the thrill of having a system or process work better than the competition.

My best was a new process that tested High Power darlington Transistors.

The previous system had a Machine Efficiency of 12%, and yield of 10% to 20%.

I had a budget of $3.5 Million dollars, used $3.4 million of it, and invented a whole new process. The first year, with the new process, Yield was 86%, M.E. was 72%, and the whole thing paid for itself in 7 1/2 Months.

Over the next 2 years, I fine tuned the process to get an average 96% Yield for 9 months in a row.

I submitted a CIP (Cost Improvement Project) for 3 1/2 Million Dollars, Based on two years use of process. In the electronic industry, any process over 5 years, is usually phased out. They were still using mine 24 years later. It got phased out with the development of a DMOS based design that could finally manage the same power levels. Power levels? How about 10 Amps at 600 Volts.

What did I personally gain?

Well, I never got as much as a 'thank you' from my present boss.

I am certain he was so ignorant that he had no clue what I had done.

I don't recall a sudden raise, but I do believe I became fire-proof, because too many others knew what I did. My next boss, gave me a $4,000 raise, so I don't feel too bad.

'What a windbag. This is more than I have ever told anyone, other than a few very close friends.' I feel a kinship with you.

Black Holes And Cakes
This week has been an eye opener.No more black holes. Can't say devils food cake or angel food cake. No more'men only signs. No more,no more...

Mind control. Does it remind anyone of the Muslim laws about words that are taboo?

The judges who bring down the gavel on P.C.violators are ,as John MacEnroe alwayssaid ,ARE THE PITS OF THE WORLD.

Bernie Mac made a prostitution
joke at an Obama fundraiser.

Think he'll get fired for insensitivity to hookers?

"Black hole of Calcutta" is an old allusion to an actual dungeon/prison in India under the British Raj and refers to the misery of the place.

It has come to mean something terrible or inexplicably disappeared. Do we now need to change all of history and literature (allusion) to appease people who now only exist to be offended?

If we elect Obama, we certainly will.

These are the new Puritans, ruling from the self-righteousness of the pillory and stocks from the MSM and its surrogates among academia and professional whiners.

Tony Snow
Goodbye Tony, we will miss you. As Vince Gill wrote for his brothers' untimely death "go rest high on that mountain,son your working days are done..go to heaven a'singing love for the Father and the Son."

Expect the left to pile on about Tony. They have no shame. Vultures.

Institutionalized Incompetence 1
Politicians = Institutionalized Incompetence

I like the old 'Dirty Harry' movies because they represent what is wrong with Liberals and Democrats. Here is an illustration of Liberal thinking by District Attorney Rothko.
------------------------------------------------
[Harry is getting a dressing-down for his most recent arrest]

District Attorney Rothko: You're lucky I'm not indicting you for assault with intent to commit murder.

Harry Callahan: What?

District Attorney Rothko: Where the hell does it say that you've got a right to kick down doors, torture suspects, deny medical attention and legal counsel? Where have you been? Does Escobedo ring a bell? Miranda? I mean, you must have heard of the Fourth Amendment. What I'm saying is that man had rights.

Harry Callahan: Well, I'm all broken up over that man's rights!

Institutionalized Incompetence 2
Dirty Harry illustrates the difference between the Liberal mind and sensibility.

Politicians = Institutionalized Incompetence
------------------------------------------------
[Harry Callahan has to explain to the Liberal Mayor why he shot a man]

Harry Callahan: Well, when an adult male is chasing a female with intent to commit rape, I shoot the b*stard. That's my policy.

The Mayor: Intent? How did you establish that?

Harry Callahan: When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher's knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross!
[walks out of the room]

The Mayor: He's got a point.

Two Things
One: Why didn't anyone in the media who reported this story ask the commissioner or the judge if they knew what a black hole was? A little honest and public ridicule might keep some people from shooting their mouths off at every errant perceived offense.
Two: I forget who said it, but he was a black man trying to distance himself from Obama who said, "He's and African-American, I'm an American of African decent." I think African-American and Mexican-American et al put the emphasis in the wrong place.

I have often wondered
I have often wondered just who that it is that gets to decide what exactly is “politically correct?” Is one appointed to the position? Is one elected? What qualifies one too determine what is “politically correct?” Do these people hold meetings where they set agendas, put forth motions to declare something “politically correct,” second these motions, proceed to discuss and debate the motions and at last vote on them? If such meetings are indeed held, are these meetings open to the public? Are records kept as to who voted for against these motions?

Now for another line of questioning; suppose one considers oneself apolitical, with no more than a passing interest in politics, does one then need to concern oneself with “politically correctness?” Would one not be like unto another who has little to no interest in basketball who and has no need to be concerned with what constitutes a personal foul?

Ratas y Ratones
Nothing strange about a feeling of compadre. Our careers match in many ways. As we get older, its more fun to talk of the past, and there is doubtless the urge to re-affirm to self and associates that we did a few neat things, made a difference. There are a lot of kindred souls here with similar backgrounds, few of them old windbags like us. BrianR got personal a while ago when his stunning daughter got married. I notice those of my cousins who saw action in WW2 (those still with us) are eager to talk about it, after years of silence. Its like they are asking "We did a good job, didn't we?"
And congratulations on your state of the art process. Your boss may well have had no clue but as you say, you become fireproof. And you doubtless have received unknown respect from those you never met, as in some user remarking to himself I wonder what smart SOB came up with this cute idea. The word gets around.

BrianR and JD's Handsome Son
Good morning and thank you for your contributions. Brian, i hope you noted my salute to your oh so politically correct correction of black holes to African-American holes.
And actually, the fact that i haven't noticed any libs defending that councilman is a very positive sign that he is an embarrassment and unrepresentative of most minorities. Its always the lunatic fringe that gets the ink/Bandwidth.

have thrown out Policeman, Fireman, Mahhole Cover or any other gender specific terms long ago. Now they are police officers, fire fighters, and Storm Sewer Access Cover etc.

Students can get marked down for using these politically incorrect terms in their papers etc...as well.

Lots happening this week....

Marxist Obama is now telling us that we should all learn Spanish.... Anyone want to wager that should Marxist Obama become pres. it will then be, we WILL LEARN SPANISH!

And, what's allowable speech is becoming less and less.

Who knows what we'll be forbidden to say next week?

And, don't forget Marxist Obama's reaction to criticism of his wife... "But I do want to say this to the GOP. If they think that they're going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful. Because that I find unacceptable,"

Get that part??? "... be careful. Because that I find unacceptable."

Step back from the insanity, and watch the puzzle pieces coming together!

Latest MSM Concerns
Media grows impatient with Iowa's lack of flood-related rapes and pillaging: Why can't they be more like New Orleans?

New York Times may change their motto from 'All the News that's fit to Print' to 'All the News that's fit to P!MP'.

MSM says Obama has been great for jobs in the MSM - spokesman states:
'Obama has helped the MSM hire hundreds of new personnel to help write 'plausible denials' for his many 'flip flops'.

Do not let someone make ...............
I have a practice or what-ever you want to call it. I do my best not to let someone else make their problems my problems. Far too many people don't!

I am not, never have been a racist, and neber will be a racist. Thus, political correctness is a problem I do not have and will not accept from anyone else! What I say is - what I say! Political correctness is a problem too many other people have. Thus, there is no need for political correctness for me. So you other people better deal with it! An that is all I have to say about this.

HAND!

Price and this judge...
..are yet 2 more urban stool samples that represent the gross mediocrity of liberal black "logic", as adolescent as it is. And they have loyal black voters that will vote for them at every turn.

Black, see also "urban", thought and reasoning has given us growing, bustling, safe and vibrant cities such as, uh, and then there's that town, lemme see, there's, um...

Okay, I can't think of any right now, but consider the list of black Nobel winners in science. There's, ah, um, wait, don't tell me, there's .......

Of all the self-inflicted problems, miseries, and rampant crime in black ghettos across the country, we hear these hilariously idiotic commentaries and complaints from black elected officials. It's as if they have a crusade to validate The Bell Curve.

At least these bruthas are "down for the struggle", even if they and their sheeple create said struggles.

Vote Obama and life on the porch will get even easier!

War on Words by Liberals
The MSM is like any other commodity, it must give people what they want or it will remain unsold and the business it represents will fail.

Could the MSM just be a reflection of the morals and values of a Liberal system?

The Character of Liberals (oxymoron), which disregards truth and is obsessed by an hysterical fear of words, like 'humankind' which they say should be 'humynkind' has declared 'War on Words'.

Gasoline prices and terrorists are not to be feared say Liberals, 'WORDS' will be the downfall of 'Self Esteem'.

That's one of the things I hate about Larry Elder

And yet I bet you read him every time.

As the black sheep of
my family, I used to spend my vacations on the shore of the Black Sea in the house of a local blacksmith, where, during the frequent blackouts, I would read about blacklisting, blackguards and black widows. "Ah! Bete noire!" some would say seeing me reading Rouge & Noir and listening Elisabeth Schwartzkopf records.
Blackmailed I was by idiots - yet, paradoxically, the study of blackholes gave me much relief and here I can say that some incursions in black magic...

A politically incorreect "cadavre exquise" - please take the blackton and continue at will...

Crazy
How can we possibly tolerate each other and get along if we do not ignore foolishness? Ridiculous lawyers and government workers having ridiculous confrontations in court is entertaining and that's about it. Why did Newt apologize for what he said? Was it false information? Were people offended? We must offend one another if we hold the Truth to the most important part of Liberty. We cannot apologize for speaking the Truth. Isn't Newt brave enough to speak the Truth without apologizing?
Forced feeding of unfamiliar foods on 3 year olds by government workers to end "racism" is scary weird. And forced worship of God or any false god is a direct denial of Freedom. Don't the Brits have rights? What is going on in England and why are the people tolerating it? What has the English Parliment turned the brave countrymen of England into?

Lets not forget about all the sports
teams that have to wade through the PC landscape. Indians, Redskins, Chiefs, now apparently the Blackhawks will have to go searching for some other suitable term to replace "Black" as someone might be offended for associating blacks with hawks.

Washington REDSKINS
Why dont we as a nation, TAKE OUR THUMBS OUT OF OUR MOUTHS! For goodness sake, how thick is our skin now?

Obama and Liberals on 55 mph
Obama and Liberals want a 55 mph speed limit to conserve energy which they say is the intelligent method instead of the ignorant method of 'drilling'.

Obama and Liberals do not care about those 'flyover' Americans that 'cling to God and guns' which isn't their voter base anyway.

Obama and Liberals care about the Urban areas that can't drive 55 in the heavy traffic of the cities and is their voter base.

Obama and Liberals say those citizens who are not living in their 'voter base areas' must sacrifice for 'The Common Good' of cities and especially the inner city.

PC out of control
When ordinary terms such as "Black Hole," which is a proper term for a phenomenon that exists in our solar system can be deemed offensive by the overly-sensitive, where does it end. We are an increasingly hostile society, as we watch our words and guard our mouth, lest the most innocent of statements be deemed offensive by someone who merely overheard it.

It has become the number one tool of silencing dissent against those of the Muslim faith by crying blasphemy over the slightest perceived insult to their religion. When political cartoons in non-Muslim countries or the most innocent act of naming a teddy bear Muhammad stirs outrage, an assessment of the limitations of political correctness are in order.

Political correctness is an aggressive form of censorship, a threat to our personal liberties and a dangerous manifestation of power.

It is neither insensitive, technically inaccurate nor grounds for discipline or censure to say to someone that a "Black Hole would swallow an Angle Food Cake." Those who think otherwise are the more likely candidates for "sensitivity training."

The State recently 'black topped' some roads with 'black asphalt' here.

You forgot something, what do you do with son that's on the end of per?

Rats #24 I rec'd a copy of an exit final for 8th grader in Kansas in 1895. I was an A B student in H.S. before the '70's and a lot of the questioned stumped me. You are so right, it's been going downhill for decades, the test made me feel a lot better about my Dad's 8th grade education..I always knew he was a smart man. I think your comparison between the '40's
and now is one reason why the lib/left is so upset about the surge (ooh did I say something
un P-C?) in homeschooling. I homeschooled my youngest for 10 years (had a math tutor since I'm numerically challenged), had him in an accredited school program. I called the school and asked where his grade level was compared to
government schools and was told he was a year and a half ahead. There are good private schools that are also ahead but who can afford them? After we left our church, we were forced to put the older 5 in public school and there's a difference between them and the youngest.
I think the reaction by the black commish is a reflection on the quality of education that so
many blacks get in the public schools that
the DemonRats refuse to allow the parents the freedom to choose better schools.

Hahahaha, Sun!

Hey, I told you yesterday I have a sense of humor!

Maybe they should just call it tar an be done with it.

They need to start oil drilling 55 miles per hour or we need to have an uprising. We should march on Washington,guns a'blazing and demand something be done ala the 'Million Man March',with Obama's crowd..

No Lenny Bruce,
No "Little Rascals" either in today's thin skinned world.

Seinfeld had a few PC related episodes though. George inviting Jerry's black pest control guy to lunch to prove to his black boss he had black friends. The whole mistaken Jerry as gay episode. Oh lets not forget the cigar store Indian episode when he was dating the "Native American" and accused her of being an "indian giver".

black hole
with all the fretting over political correctness etc., did anyone stop to consider that this moron just didn't know what the term black hole refers to?

Ret. Geek: Can someone pa-lease explain

how driving 55MPH is going to SOLVE our energy situation???

Sounds to me as though that little plan will only prolong the situation.

Retired Geek
Be careful there geek, as there is such thing as white concrete. Someone from the "control" side of the aisle will read your white asphalt thing and start demanding we pave all our roads with white concrete so as not to offend anybody(lining their own pockets with tax money in the process) They might even come up with some global warming theory that using white will somehow significantly cool the earth. I am sure the cement companies producing white cement will lobby for this along with the ready-mix associations. The asphalt companies had better get their "new" products division on board with coming up with new colors to compete. Black is out, red or green is in. The concrete union had better not get wind of this.

Hyphenated-Americans
To Pistol:
I refuse to refer to black people as African-Americans. Number one reason, it does not refer to race but to origin. We are called white people. Therefore the proper analogy is to call them black people. (Note: All Hispanics have been officially designated as white people, so don't call them people of color, or brown. This is so even though they call themselves people of color whenever they are playing the race card.) Number two reason: I don't call ANY group by a hyphenated name because being an American citizen is the most blessed event in the world. Everyone is an American should be thanking God every day that they weren't born in the rest of the benighted world. If being called an American is denigrating (oops, can we still use that word?), then get the he** out of this country. Note: I'm still waiting for Susan Sarandon, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, etc to leave. Wassup with that?

western bondbeam: "Becker" also had an

excellent episode on being PC... when his parked car was hit by a taxi... and he yelled out the door... "You people......."

The ASSUMPTION was of course, "you people" was a racial or ethnic slur.

In the end, Becker (being Becker) burst into the radio station that had been berating him for over a week, and let them have it.... over the airways.

The "you people" was directed at cab drivers in general, race or ethnicity had NOTHING what so ever to do with it... But we're so focused on race and ethnicity that no one can see past it.

Link
Here is a link to the article. Mayfield did not lay down and immediately apologize but retorted that it was a figure of speech and a science term. John Wiley Price was simply following his mentors' footsteps (Sharpton, Jackson, et al.) in attempting to boost his political image by using race. He fell flat on his face this time by merely showing his abject ignorance of science. Better luck next time John.

Peer pressure probably prevented him from paying any attention in school the day black holes were discussed. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

John Wiley Price
is an a hole

Hypersensitivity
All this PC over words will destroy us yet. Whenever I read news stories like these I think they must be some editors' idea of a joke on a slow news day. Then I realize these paragons of intelligence are dead serious. And why is it that only Muslims are allowed to get offended over real or perceived slights against their religion. What would have been the result if the British children had been forced to kneel and pray to Jesus instead? You would never hear the end of how right wing Christian fanatics are "forcing their beliefs down other peoples throats".

I worked for a 'sampling' group a few
years ago. We learned that ONCE THE BLACK HAS SPOKEN, the Whites would invariably GO ALONG, so as not to OFFEND. Even if there was only one Black in the group - we called it "Black Power."

If the people were then segragated, they would tell the truth of how they felt about the issue. BUT NOT IN THE PRESENCE OF A BLACK.

I always wanted to then regroup them and press their "own view" back to them, but was told NOT TO DO THAT as it would be 'embarrassing.'

Extreme Stupidity
was on exhibit here. Price's ignorance and racist, yes "racist" comment were a disgusting offense to blacks in general. Even worse, in my opinion was the judge's ordering Mayfield to apologize. We need to stop falling all over ourselves to "apologize" for comments which are not intended to be offensive in the first place.

We once were at a point where I believe the "racism" thing was actually improving in our country. Now with Sharpton, Wright, Price, et al, we are seeing a reversal of that. The fanning of flames by these people is only going to increase racial tension. We have a rough future in this country if we don't halt this nonsense now.

"Well, now"... interesting

I think there are quite a few folks here who wouldn't fit the paradigm, as I know that in my case, I made some funny (at least I thought so) jokes that told it like I saw it, and I assume there are Black people who read these threads.

So what that study ACTUALLY tells us, I think, is that there's "white guilt" associated with less-than-conservative people. It would be interesting to know the political ideologies of the Whites in that group.

Anne
I never watched much Becker. I was a Cheers fan though when it was on.

It's funny to me that TV shows in general can get away with some things because the viewers realize it is not real, but when the stars of the shows get out in real life, suddenly they are not allowed to be anything but PC. Remember the Michael Richards standup comedy video?

BTW, in spite of all the

jokes, this stuff does, in fact, present a real danger to freedom.

All you have to do is look to the UK, mainland Europe, and even Canada, where speech is censored in deferment to "sensitivity", particularly at this point to Muslims. People who preach in the churches and publish commentary, and even authors who've written books in other countries, have all been prosecuted for their expression of opion when it was deemed "offensive".

Think it can't happen here?

What's the basis for "hate crime" legislation? It's thought control, of course.

Houston govt. salaries
Has anybody seen the publication of every govt. salary for Houston, Tx, I believe. Amazing. Tons of folks making more than $200K a year. What a CROCK. You know and I know who many of those govt. employees are, and why we won't say stop it. Because God forbid we be called "racist" for cutting jobs in which black folk tend to be more concentrated.

When I took my Ph.D. from Tulane, a group of 3 professors sat me down and said, literally, that because of my skin color and sex, I would not be able to obtain a teaching job outside of a remote rural location (which is where I ended up anyway! -- Thank GOD!). Point though was I realized that as a white man I am nothing but dirt in the eyes of mainstream academia, govt., and corporations. Though I still try to treat everybody as individuals, I realize others no longer look at life like that.

So I will try to continue treating folks fairly, but I WILL NOT any longer sacrifice myself on the altar of political correctness for blacks, Hispanics, or any other group that demands preferential treatment. You people are not my friends, or friends of the American idea, if you hold to affirmative action and other bigoted, racist, policies. To hell with all who spout such nonsense. May you become unemployed (especially if you work for govt. slopping up our tax dollars).

No more pulling punches.

Anne - 55mph
I don't think anyone's touting it as a total solution, and I think we all recognize that there has to be a multi-pronged approach here, which includes more production AND conservation.

Reducing the speed limit to 55 does reduce overall fuel consumption by a significant percent.

........
The liberals continue to regress further. It’s becoming evident that crack is less harmful to the brain than liberalism. Such clinical stupidity can only be mocked. Next we’ll be called racists if we refer to nighttime as “dark.” No longer is it dark if you turn the lights off, it’s another shade of light. Mayfield should have told Price you’ll get no apology from me, it’s not my fault you’re an ignorant fool.

Liberals are proof positive that Darwin was wrong.

BrianR
Agree, the altar of PC is really speech-control, and is analogous to hate crimes legislation in exactly the same way.

AND all your jokes were funny.

(Thanks for clearing that up about the hats- one has to know these things).

BrianR
"What's the basis for "hate crime" legislation? It's thought control, of course"

You hit the nail on the head.

African Americans
I think technically, the only people who could use that term in any legitimate way would be those who themselves have emigrated from Africa. If they must. Anyone else ought to drop it and become American. Same for all the other hyphens.
(Alas thanks to the Obama family and their Pastor, and several posters here on TH, we've come to realize they don't really LIKE America.)

Here's a thought though: we could ALL start to call ourselves African Americans, since mitochondrial DNA technology has shown us that our maternal origin is in Africa. It would confound all the AA programs if everyone started checking that box. Who's gonna argue with you?
If they do, just play the race card.

No Offense BUT
PLENTY of Absurdity intended!!

As of January 21, 2009...
We will no longer have a "White House" (regardless of the color it is painted)

AND there will be No Mo'...

Playing Black Jack at a casino or getting hit by one when you leave with your winnings.

But rest assured that if you get arrested for the mugging you won't be thrown into a Paddy-Wagon (Irish).

Eating Blackened Fish (or anything else 'blackened') is hereby outlawed.

Inside the Twenty Yard Line will no longer be called a "Red Zone" (NATIVE [Americans?] & Left-Wing Dems)

'Little pointed shovels' will henceforth be referred to as 'Burrowing tools'.

Hoe of course will be (already is?) a 'garden-thingy'.

Eating Ho-Ho's will be a thing of the past (NYC is already ahead of the curve here)

Santa can only say HA-HA-HA

Yellow Fever (Asian?) can only be called "Exotic Illness" from now on.

All maps or world atlas' must rename "New Guinea" to New Italian(?).

The "Black Sheep Squandron" will be expunged from history (and TV re-runs)

Brown Sugar will be sold as "The OTHER Sugar" & Oldies Radio can not play the Rolling Stones tune of the same name forevermore.

This could go on forever...an encyclopedia could be written about it, or at least several books that if marketed to Libs would make the writer RICH!!!

Black hole
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional,illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

When the lights go out
in a town or state or region WHAT are we going to call it???

W/O=

PC has grown strong, slimy tentacles
One of teh girls I worked with last year had a boyfriend (well, a man friend- he was in his early 20's) from Ecuador whose brother came to visit. The boyfriend insisted that in his culture it was customary for brothers to share girls, and that she should have sex with his brother. The girl had reservtions about doing it, but was angry with herself for being "culturally insensitive" and "sexually repressed" as a result of being from a "Puritanical" country! We had some interesting sessions...

I've actually had non-gay kids worry that turning down sexual advances from someone of their own sex means that they're being "discriminatory" and they should come to understand that "love is love", and it doesn't matter if its with guys or girls.

There's alot of soot and poo circulating about in PC land.

George Lucas, Super-Lib?
Or Closet Racist?

He did after all call evil "The Dark Side" & then had James Earl Jones as its Voice...

W/O=

An excuse
The flip-side of Political Correctness is that it allows rude and insensitive people to spout off their nonsense and defend themselves by saying "I'm not politically correct".

This becomes Orwellian when someone like Jeremiah Wright defends his racist rants by saying that he isn't Politically Correct. Anti-American and anti-white rants are, in fact, the soul of Political Correctness. (Pardon my use of the word "soul". I did not mean it in a politically incorrect way.)

Commissioner John Wiley Price
must be an absolute illiterate moron. Dallas county should be embarrassed to have him as a city official. He should be washing dishes somewhere.

sans pareil
You missed one. What about unpopular members of an organization being "black-balled"? Insert Jesse Jackson joke here.

In the main, I agree with much of your post...
(Excerpts)

Sorry sir, and just a minor point.

'If' a 'Black Hole' existed in our Solar system, we would no longer exist, as we would be sucked into it, instantaneously.

Our Solar system consists of the bodies that orbit our sun.

Some may exist in our Galaxy, The Milky Way, and many exist in the universe (all galaxies).

The Milky Way is a spiral Galaxy, (think of a Star-fish shaped thingy) as are some others. A Galaxy is a compliatation of many, often Millions, of Stars, fixated around a common core (center). A spiral galaxy is in constant motion, rotating upon a core, and that core is moving through space.

At the center of our Galaxy, many facinating things are happening. Drawn to the center, by gravity.

When ordinary terms such as "Black Hole," which is a proper term for a

" phenomenon that exists in our solar system can be deemed offensive "

by the overly-sensitive, where does it end. We are an increasingly hostile society, as we watch our words and guard our mouth, lest the most innocent of statements be deemed offensive by someone who merely overheard it.

It is neither insensitive, technically inaccurate nor grounds for discipline or censure to say to someone that a "Black Hole would swallow an Angle Food Cake." Those who think otherwise are the more likely candidates for "sensitivity training."

Sorry...

It's Conyers all over again
From the wisdom of Forrest Gump:

Momma always said "Stupid is as stupid does." Does not take long to figure out what is wrong with our major cities. Look at the people who are supposed to be running them and see what stupid does.

The Tolkien part...
Darkness enveloped Middle Earth as Sauron's power grew. The Orcs (not Uruk Hai) could only fight at night- truly dark creatures. Lots of references to dark stuff there. The Southerlings were swarthy (and gasp!) and quite middle eastern in dress and behavior! Further, Gandalf replaces Sauron as the White Wizard after Sauron was given over to darkness! Tolkien's descendents will probably be sued for reparations.

Perhaps Lewis made up for it by having one of his evil characters a quite white snow queen of Narnia!

A more likely scenario is that our Sun will expand, consume the Earth, Destroy any life remaining, and bathe the World in fire, long before we are drawn into a Black Hole.

Then, our Sun, being the benevolent creature that it is, will then shrink to a White Dwarf, and be the old Person on the block.

I estimate, from my readings, that will be within a few Billion Years.

I do hope you have your affairs in order.

I trust that
everyone is familiar with the story of Sambo's Restaurant? Named for the co-founders, not the book (which was about an Indian, anyway), they had their name legislated out of existence. Agree with most comments here.

Perhaps the best way to obliterate this dreaded political correctness is thru humor, biting sarcasm.

But that requires a special gift, an ability most of us don't possess(including myself).

Many of us lack the mental dexterity and quick wit to respond instantaneously, with ridicule and sarcasm, when confronted by someone employing p.c. against us.

Most of us just do what Newt does....respond by apologizing for supposedly giving "offense".

I include myself in Newt's category, either apologizing or slinking off into sullen silence.

And it is a damned shame.

Oh for a quick, devastating wit, and a devil- may-care attitude to go along with it.

~~~
Kind sir, That is my wish Also.
I and, I suspect you, ponder things and wonder whether you actually understood the apparent supidity, or if you missed something.
I do not respond that quickly, and have to muse things out in my own time.
I refuse to give rapid response to what I perceive to be idiocy.
After a few physical encounters in my youth, I quickly learned otherwise.
Ignore if it is trivial, attack with vigor, if not!
I have a Savage .22/250 also. Laminated stock heavy barrel single shot varminter. My nephew in law who is a bench shooter is breaking it in for me. I found a batch of cheap Remington ammo mail order and bought 200 rounds for $90. Does your Striker recoil much? You have to have a scope on it. What kind of practical groups do you get?
My service experience was as a Fire control tech, which included 54 weeks of electronic training to maintain the Nike AAA system. Went to school on the GI bill, worked on the Eastern Test Range and tracking ships, returned to the States and finished my degree in 66. by then i had got into computers, finished up my career as a software engineer, mostly working on computer controlled radars. It sounds like you too, were into building stuff. Its such fun to see something work, especially if it works better than the competitions efforts to do the same thing.
I retired in 2000, soon found myself an assistant teacher at a charter school. I recommend it for all retired people. Our school system is crying for volunteer help. In my case they even created a paying position for me. Turning around some child who has been falling through the cracks is a miraculous experience. Precious comments like "I never knew i was smart until you showed me" are the real pay.
~~~

Hmmm. Say, You Savage, why are YOU not breaking in this Fine Piece, yourself?

Just asking, you know.

Fire a few rounds, clean the bore. Repeat. How big a challenge is this?

I am sorry, if you have needs other than I can perceive.

My version is a beautiful masterpiece. As is my Savage Striker, it also is a 1/4 grouper at 100 Yards.

I often wonder, why are the Savages So Danged good?

commonsense vs. PC
I'm a minority and I'm little miffed with the guy who says he won't work with minorities. Just like all whites are not racists and all men are not rapists, so, too, not all minorities are into the PC B.S.

I'd love to bring back common sense and courtesy, which are remarkably good substitutes for hypersensitivity and PC. If people had good manners and thicker skins, we would have a much saner society.

For example, the use of scientific terms such as black hole is not racist. The color white appears white to people because it reflects all of the visible spectrum, while black absorbs. Thus it makes sense to refer to black holes as black.

As far as the association of darkness with bad things - once upon a time, night time was considered dangerous since that's when predators stalked our ancestors. Darkness became associated with peril and sunshine and light with safety. There wasn't any racial connotation to these words.

It is common sense not to use insulting words. However, scientific terms and historical idioms are not offensive. It is common sense to try to use neutral language - so, for example, replacing "men at work" signs with "people at work" when the former wear out is fine. But wait until the signs wear out - don't spend extra money on it, when you could be using the funds to fix potholes.

And leading a campaign to replace words in literature is silly. Great literature, whether Shakespeare's plays or Mark Twain's novels, reflect the culture of the time. Why are we supposed to tolerate modern Islamic cultural sensibilities, which hurt women today, but not accept 18th century white culture, which has no current victims?

Historical PC

It is common sense to incorporate women and minorities into history to the extent that they did in fact play roles. But history should still be factual and accurate.

Recently a statue honoring 3 firefighters who raised a flag after 9/11 was changed to incorporate minorities. But in the actual event, the firefighters were white. I think the real event, with 3 white men, should have been commemorated. It's great to honor minorities when they do great things, but things should not be made up - that is giving false honor.

What a Crock
John Wiley Price is another example of an affirmative action black; he's dumb as a post. The judge is an idiot, too. I think everyone should resume their previous speech patterns and totally disregard the PC dictates. Who exactly has the power to determine which words Americans use? It is time for common sense to prevail and to remember the first amendment; if someone dislikes a word, too bad. And I have had a belly full of apologies, too. What a crock!

Barack Obama on Genocide in Iraq

Genocide = the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group.

SUNAPEE, N.H. 2007 - Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said Thursday the United States cannot use its military to solve humanitarian problems and that preventing a potential genocide in Iraq isn’t a good enough reason to keep U.S. forces there.

http://www.bostonherald.com/news/national/politics/view.bg? articleid=1012561

Obama knows that the victims of a Genocide in Iraq would be the destruction of those who voted for Liberty, Freedom and the Right of the Iraq people to have a constitution and elect their own government.

Remember those women who proudly held up their purple thumbs?

Iraqi Women who for the first time in their entire life had a chance to seek freedom - women who have been victims of barbaric torture for centuries?

Those brave women will be first in the Genocide!

Liberal women in the US drinking tea or coffee at their neighborhood meetings say, Obama will defend womens' rights, I think I will vote for him - isn't Obama cute?

Rape Rooms in Iraq - Politically Correct
Many Americans have heard about the 'Rape Rooms' in Iraq.

The details are to ghastly to describe here at TH, this is as graphic as allowed.

Women and girls, reportedly as young as 9 years old, were strapped down and repeatedly raped and tortured any way the 'Islamic Animals' desired, by as many 'Brutal Men' as available.

Many of their families were forced to watch.

When the 'Islamic Animals' had enough of the female, many were fed feet first into a wood chipper while they were still alive.

The next female victim and their families would be brought in.

This was Genocide of Iraqi females.

Shefali
A great commom-sense post. With all the really serious happenings in the world, why sweat the small stuff?

Honor Killings in America
Honor Killings of females all over the world and happening now in America.

Islamists conduct the most of theses 'Honor Killings' but other cultures do as well.

Where they can conduct the 'Honor Killings' in public, the time honored way of these animals, is to bury the female waist deep in a hole and be stoned to death.

Stoning to death is a slow, brutal death.

These women and girls have committed such ghastly acts as not having meals served on time.

These women and girls have committed such ghastly acts as not wearing Burkhas or veiling their faces properly.

I worked for a while in an Islamic country where I saw women trying to eat ice cream cones with veils on, being careful not to show their face.

Street vendors work the streets with vegetables and so forth and women let down baskets to get their purchases, if no male is available to escort them to the street.

These women face 'stoning to death' if they do not use hand signals to indicate their purchase because they are not allowed to speak to any man who is not family.

We can expect more women in America to suffer 'Honor Killings'.

Liberals are more concerned with 'words' than humans.

God forbid that they ever listen to a real astrophysicist teaching a college course and describing the various known or postulated features of a black hole.

There is a specific perimeter of its gravity well, within which the escape velocity theoretically is greater than c (standard notation for the speed of light, 186,262 mi/sec or 300,000 km/sec). Named for the theoretical physicist who postulated its existence in the early 1960s, it is called the (ulp!) Schwartzschild Radius. (Pronounced "shwartz-shield", BTW.)

This reminds me of my 1st encounter with
Rabid Polical Correctness.

It was in 1977, and I was working for my father installing CB radios in cars.
An "African-American" guy was standing outside the car as I was installing his radio,
and said "I'll be right back, I need to get the "Black Tape" (electrical tape)
He went Ballistic, and called me a racist!
"You need Black tape for the Black guy? What are you? some kind of racist? Screw you Cracker!!!"

I was all of 17, and was totally dumbfounded, anyone who ever worked with the stuff called electrical tape "Black Tape".

My dad heard the whole thing and came out there to tell the guy, "It's called Black tape because it's BLACK you moron, I suggest you take your bigoted @sss down the road, because I refuse to do business with Idiots."

BTW, to this day i still call electrical tape "Black Tape", Guess I need to start calling it "African-American" Tape now.

While I'm at it, maybe I'll take my African-American shovel and go till up the garden.
Maybe for dinner we'll have African-american Beans and rice.
Maybe make some cajun style "african-american'ed" chicken too.
I sure hope the power doesn't go out again, I really hate African-american Outs.

If you ask me the only true "Black-Hole" is between that councilman's ears.

Let's face it, Political Correctness, is a "african-american" and white case of stupidity.

Those two minorities who raised a ruckus over the term "black hole" are quite simply morons - too bad there is not a minimum IQ requirement for voting in this country.

PC Colors
I'm looking online for a new car. While communicating with the dealership and not being able to see who was at the other end of the line, I told them I couldn't decide between the color formerly known as black, or brown. Much to my distress I found out that I was talking to Fernando.

Now that I've offended Fernando by asking for a brown car I thought I'd ask for a red car. Unfortunatly the sales manager is American of native descent. No incentive will be offered for that color I was informed.

I finally opted for a yellow car, when I drove it home my landlady who's name is Shu Lan was there waiting for my rent check. Upon looking at my car she informed me that I'd have to move out because this color wasn't acceptable to her.

I'm just going to get my bedsheets and sew them into an outfit that will cover all of my skin, complete with a hood that only shows my eyes so as to not be able to offend anyone with my ethnic background. I only hope I have some bedsheets that aren't all white.

Hmmm....
Maybe it's just me, but until the African-American community changes the names of the National Association for the Advancement of COLORED People, and the United NEGRO college Fund, they can just wallow in their hypocrisy, and stick it.

This case is stupid beyond all reason.

Stupidity of Political Correctness
Purveyors of children's entertainment are the most guilty of pushing political correctness on their audience. Think of all the shows like Dora the Explorer that are designed to make some minority feel good about themselves.

The last time Disney released a cartoon that had a pretty white girl as the main character was Beauty and the Beast in 1991. Since then the princesses are not allowed to be white girls. Jasmine was Middle Eastern, Pocahontas was American Indian, Esmeralda was a Gypsy. Also, the last time they allowed their characters to get married at the end was in Aladdin, in 1992.

After Lion King, the gay lobby got a strangle hold on the creative department at Disney and controlled the scripts, making sure that they did not discriminate against non-normative families.

It is no coincidence that the audience for Disney's animated features began to drop off at that point.

The Vice President of Disney Feature Animation, who was an outspoken gay activist, was moved up to President of the division, and the pictures got worse.

Typical of all Leftie controlled corporations, the execs all told each other that no one wanted to see animation anymore and shut down the division in 2003.

It is a good sign that after Roy Disney led a stockholder revolt, and forced out Michael Eisner, a lot of the toxic executives were fired from Feature Animation, and the genius from Pixar, John Lassiter took over the helm of all things animated. He may be a liberal, but is not a wild-eyed Leftie activist.

They are making a new hand-drawn animated feature for the first time in many years, and I am hoping that it will be a return to good storytelling. The princess will be a black girl, but hopefully, it won't be so PC, and families will go see it.

I still think that Disney execs need to step inside a Toys R Us and see what little kids are buying. Why not a white princess? Why the reverse discrimination?

Large Caliber
I was going to suggest that you get a blue car or a green one, but someone might mistake you for a Leftie!

Some people seem to ...
have lost the ability to "take things with a grain of salt". I seriously doubt the offended man thought that the term "black hole" was being used as anything other than in the context of what was being discussed. He saw an opportunity to display victim status and embarrass a white guy and probably chuckled "stupid cracker" to himself on his way home that day.

My Mom once worked with a black lady, and I use that term here because that is the way the lady wished to be addressed, who called some people of her race by the "N" word. She told my Mom that only the working people of her race deserved to be called black and that the rest were just, N-words.

Large Caliber
A yellow car might offend lefties,too .That is the color of that streak down their backs.

not surprised
Given the current state of political correctness, the outrage people exhibit at even the most innocuous comments, this doesn't surprise me one bit. And the main reason it doesn't is that I lived in Dallas for 12 years. John Wiley Price is a race baiter of the highest order; he has always seized on every opportunity he can, real or imagined, to stir up his brethren into a massive frenzy of racial hatred. Simply put, he makes Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton look like Colin Powell

What about the Miss Black USA...
pageant? Are red, brown, yellow and white girls allowed to enter, as they all are along with black girls in the regular Miss USA pageant? If you wanted to take PC to the heights of stupidity, why are males not allowed to enter either contest?

I mean we have female Boy Scouts and male Girl Scouts. Why is it that only women can give birth? Why is it that only "Mens Room" are equipped with urinals and toilets?

Boy! uh no wait I mean Man! uhoh, well sheesh, life just ain't fair is it?

Your mom's co worker
Made, and had, a lot of sense, FW.
But I can't help wondering how often SHE got called a "racist" by other blacks for the way she thought.

Up A Tee
John Wiley Price and Judge Thomas Jones strike me as being a bit up a tee.

Large Caliber, I think you ...
may just have to go with beige, a very nondescript hue.

A black guy my husband once worked with told him he was more of a pinkish tone, not white at all.
My husband laughed and said the other guy was not black but more of a milk chocolate. They kidded each other all the time and were good friends.

Black Hole Predates "Black"
The use of the term black hole in astronomy/physics predates what is now known as the Black community and its preference for the term "Black" as an appellation, rather than the various predecessor ethnic appellations such as "Afro-American," "African-American," and "Negro." It is rather presumptuous of any ethnic group to think that if they prefer some particular term as the politically correct way to address members of their ethnic group, that from that point forward, all prior meanings of the term are null and void and any use of the term in any of its prior meanings should be considered a racial or ethnic slur. Perhaps if a term an ethnic group prefers to use as an appellation for its members has previously taken on some negative connotations in some circumstances or uses, they should choose a different term, rather than unreasonably expecting all the rest of humanity to redefine their vocabulary.

Marine's Dad she may...

I did NOT get my education from the schools. I got mine from books. I read an average of 7-8 novels a week from 3rd grade on. Why? School was boring.

When I entered 1st Grade, I already had a 4th grade education. Why?

My family did their homework around the Kitchen table, and older siblings did their homework there. No radio, no TV, and that was where the entertainment was.

1940s by the way.

I knew 4th grade math at the first grade. By the time I got to the fifth grade, I realized I knew more than my teacher. It was not that I was so smart, It was that she was so abysmally ignorant.

Alas. I did not know the difference.

So, I gave up on school and Read even more than I had before.

I too saw that test.

I too was stumped on some of the Questions.

We could expound upon this to almost any length, but I will be brief.

An average Eighth grader of the 1940s had equivalent knowledge of an average High school Graduate of the 1970s, and an average College Graduate of today.

I will cite an example : Barak Hussein Obama's "57 States".

Our School System has been under assault since Pres. Wilson, and was being taken over by the Commies from that era onward. The quality of same has been in decline also.

The quality of too many School Systems is asymptotically approaching 'Comic Book' level.

Someone finally named it: Will to Power
The term PC has been around for a long time, but I've never seen anyone name this component of PCness. As long as I can remember, while watching our society go downhill
at the same time, it has always seemed that almost all people, some more than others, are taught by society so well to both exert and accept this "will-to-power", that it is embedded in our society's mental programming.

Goldberg is right that it needs to be resisted. Giving it a name is a good first step. Saying it should be resisted is a good second step.

Next Step: How to resist?

I think the counterbalance to "Will-to-Power" is that "People/Things have a Place", and anyone who questions this does so at his/her own risk.

Simple, easy to remember. And a conservative core value as well.

Need something more concrete? Think about how YOU know things should be, and when they are challenged, think Yosemite Sam pointing his two 45 calibre revolvers outward at his adversary, and saying "BACK OFF".

I haven't seen him on TV for a long time. But it was about the end of the time when people often decorated their living rooms with three or so shotguns and rifles on the wall, and were were more happy and understanding, and smiled more often.

Devil's Food is now "Red Velvet"

True story...
My niece's very bright 8-year-old daughter begged to go to VBS with some new friends last summer. The church the children attended was unfamiliar to my niece and her husband, so they went to a Sunday service before agreeing. From all appearances, it was an ordinary Protestant denomination, somewhat liberal in tone, but pleasant and friendly enough. The congregation, like the neighborhood, was a mixture of races.

My grand-niece - I'll call her Stephanie - had been gone less than an hour before she returned home in tears. Seems the teacher had said that "Most people believe Adam and Eve were African-Americans. Raise your hand if you think that is true." Stephanie said that was just silly, but before she could explain why, she was booed by most of the class and reprimanded by the teacher for making an insensitive remark. She was devastated, especially since the friends who invited her to go with them were African-American.

"I didn't mean they couldn't have been black people, Mom. I just meant they couldn't have been any kind of American since America didn't even exist then. Was I wrong?"

Like you, i have a gut-level negative reaction against those who like to hyphenate their origin with American. On the other hand, i have a libertarian streak that says people should be able to love whom they like, eat what they like, and choose the title with which they are referenced. Among other forms address, hyphenated American conveys many negative possibilities. Possibility, not certainty. Particularly in Flagwaver's case, he has no wish to convey any negativism or separativism. To many people, he does anyway.

Just out of curiosity, is PA a right to work State?

BTW, early
when you have a big blizzard up there to the blacks complain about "whiteout".

Will, and the black hole of common sense
People who read or follow MSM are well aware of how furious the PC attack dogs are on any comment deemed to be, get ready "offensive"

Offensive is defined as anything that is contrary to the politics of victimization. People like Will who live, breathe, and salivate over obsessions like homosexuality are the ones who drive this sick twisted PC think policing.

Will has a guilt comples so deep and wide that for him to be comfortable on his knees doing what he does best is to demean those who disapprove. Never mind their beliefs. People like Will are always the aggrieved party, just ask him.

I would debate Will anytime on the marriage, homosexuality, and his leftist agenda but he declines to do so. He prefers to post because conservative answers will shred him and his agenda to pieces.

His comments about Larry Elder speak volumes. According to Will unless you speak how Jackson or Sharpton teel you too, you are not credible.

Vic
"Just out of curiosity, is PA a right to work State?"

Nope. Fire at will state. In PA you can fire someone without grounds. If an employer chooses to do that, then the ex-employee is entitled to unemployment benefits for a couple of months.

"when you have a big blizzard up there to the blacks complain about "whiteout"."

ROFLMAO.

Huh??
Vic, what did I miss? I said DEVILS Food = Red Velvet. So my question remains, what are we supposed to call the cake formerly known as Angel Food?

1/4 inch is smokin'. The competition is so fierce standards are blowing through the roof. Savage accuracy at low cost is partially due to their headspace system which is so simple and inexpensive its only shooter ignorance that maintained the popularity of less accurate more expensive systems. This is my opinion only, of course. As it is, it is becoming more and more into use. The Savage accutrigger also is changing everybody's triggers to compete.

As for why i farmed out my new Savage, my last trip to the farm i checked out my new (to me) FN L1A1, re-sighted in my little Ruger bolt gun which has a new scope since the the old one conked out. I haven't even fired my ANIB SAR-8, which is a H&K clone built by Springfield Armory, and i am waiting overdue delivery of an Olympic Arms Custom .25 WSSM (.25/06 ballistics). Note my newest stuff is heavy on pistol grips and big mags. I figure new bans are very possibly on the way, based like the last one on cosmetic features easy for the numbskull anti-gunners to identify. Last time it happened, i sold my military style clones for almost 5 times what i paid for them. Could easily happen again, and if it doesn't ....a good excuse to explain to my Sweetie why i bought another rifle.

For Grumpy re: Sambo's Restaurant
Apparently this restaurant is still in business, PC movement be damned...

Pistol, Re 7:02pm
That's mighty white of you or is that white and mighty of you. I can never seem to remember.

Chocolate
Blacks are now using chocolate to refer to themselves. Also chocolate city, where most of the blacks live, etc. It won't be long and that word is going be on the PC list one way or the other.

While the left is SOOO worried about

being Politcally Correct... heaven forbid we should use the wrong word or phrase and OFFEND someone...

Yet, this gets little more than a "blip" if that.

MINNESOTA PROF PLEDGES TO DESECRATE EUCHARIST

"Paul Zachary Myers, a professor at the University of Minnesota Morris, has pledged to desecrate the Eucharist. He is responding to what happened recently at the University of Central Florida when a student walked out of Mass with the Host, holding it hostage for several days. Myers was angry at the Catholic League for criticizing the student. His post can be accessed from his faculty page on the university’s website.

Here is an excerpt of his July 8 post, “It’s a Frackin’ Cracker!”:

“Can anyone out there score me some consecrated communion wafers?” Myers continued by saying, “if any of you would be willing to do what it takes to get me some, or even one, and mail it to me, I’ll show you sacrilege, gladly, and with much fanfare. I won’t be tempted to hold it hostage (no, not even if I have a choice between returning the Eucharist and watching Bill Donohue kick the pope in the balls, which would apparently be a more humane act than desecrating a goddamned cracker), but will instead treat it with profound disrespect and heinous cracker abuse, all photographed and presented here on the web.”

While the left is SOOO worried about 2
Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:

“The Myers blog can be accessed from the university’s website. The university has a policy statement on this issue which says that the ‘Contents of all electronic pages must be consistent with University of Minnesota policies, local, state and federal laws.’ One of the school’s policies, ‘Code of Conduct,’ says that ‘When dealing with others,’ faculty et al. must be ‘respectful, fair and20civil.’ Accordingly, we are contacting the President and the Board of Regents to see what they are going to do about this matter. Because the university is a state institution, we are also contacting the Minnesota legislature.

“It is hard to think of anything more vile than to intentionally desecrate the Body of Christ. We look to those who have oversight responsibility to act quickly and decisively.”

politically correct nonsense
before it was person whole cover to placate the fems not anything with black is offensive to the dims favorite minority group;

If b hussein wins expect to see 13% of the population suddenly afflicted with NWA. They will believe they earned the right to crow with their new bright faced boy in the white house and will be partying on the reparation payments they expect b hussein to see they are paid

We need a PC black hole
We need a PC black hole to suck all of this PC garbage from our lives. PC is semantic terrorism and is littering the dialog landscape like garbage used to litter our roads and rivers.

Black Hole Sun
Does this mean the band, Soundgarden needs to change the name of one of their tunes, Black Hole Sun, to something more benign? Perhaps something more fitting to the alternative/multiculture/moral-relativism set. Something along the line of: "Vast Emptiness With Light."

But what do I know? I'm just one of those "idiotic libertarians," as the left refers to us; who happens to agree with my conservative bothers, sisters and... if it is PC to say... cousins (if ya get my drift {wink).)

Cultural Marxism! pfffttt!

right to work really means right to fire for any reason not covered by federal discrimination laws.

Dempsey
Conservative bothers????? Could that be a Freudian slip? I certainly consider Libertarians political brothers, along with the rest of us in the Reagan coalition.

Demand Full Disclosure of Science Grades
The public should demand that Commissioner John Wiley Price and Judge Thomas Jones fully disclose their academic records, esp. science.

Obviously these men are either fools or ignorant.

What kind of academic system would allow the judge graduate from law school if they are totally ignorant of science. If they are failures in science, how could they reason law or public policy rationally?

They're not ignorant of science........
just classically ignorant, LGBT black males..........on the down low.

what do you get when you combine
an anal commissioner with a black hole?

Price and Jones are the racists here.
A man who looks at the world through a racial lens is a racist. Only a couple of racists would claim that any time the word "black" is used it refers solely to skin color.

Such is the case with both Price and Jones. And like most racists their narrow, paranoid view of the world is 'informed' by their ignorance. If either of them were intelligent and educated enough to understand the basis of the metaphor "black hole" they would know it refers to a scientific phenomenon and has nothing to do with people, let alone race. Only one obsessed with using race to control another's behavior would interpret that it does. And such people are racists.
