Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Barack Obama is finally coming into focus.

For a while now, the Obamaphiles have insisted that their candidate represents a profound break with the past. No more culture wars. No more "re-litigating the 1960s," in Obama's own words.

But what about re-litigating the 1980s?

There's always been a certain cultural lag time to Barack and Michelle Obama, a kitschiness that's hard to pinpoint. But I think I've got it: They're self-hating yuppies straight out of the 1980s, which were to the Obamas what the 1960s were to the Clintons.

For those too young to remember, "yuppie" was shorthand for young urban professionals - think Michael J. Fox as Alex P. Keaton in the TV series "Family Ties" - who allegedly represented the collapse of '60s values and the triumph of '80s greed. Yuppies sold their souls for a BMW and a condo.

Ironically, the biggest complaints about yuppie materialism came from self-loathing liberal yuppies - like the Obamas.

The Obamas still seem stuck in that time warp, clinging to '80s-style resentments and political assumptions. Michelle Obama is never so eloquent as when she's complaining about the burden of student loans for her two Ivy League degrees and covering the high cost of summer camp and piano lessons for her kids on her family's half-million-dollars-a-year income.

"Don't go into corporate America," she exhorted low-income working mothers in Ohio in February, even though she is a highly compensated hospital executive. She admits to being consumed with "a constant sense of guilt" over having to balance work, politics and family. "It's guilt, feeling guilty all the time."

It's telling that for the Clintons, JFK defined politics, but for Obama, Ronald Reagan is the role model. Last year, Obama admitted to admiring the Gipper's "transformative" leadership (though not his policies). Indeed, not only did Reagan restore confidence in the nation while reducing confidence in government, he put a stake in the heart of the "Vietnam syndrome" and the blame-America-first ethos of the Democratic Party. The Reagan Revolution moved the country durably to the right - so much so that even Democrats saw the writing on the wall. Obama wants to erase that writing.

As countless commentators have chronicled, Bill Clinton's 1992 victory stemmed from the fact that he was a "different kind of Democrat" - that is, one who understood the lessons of Reaganism, or at least claimed to, and rejected the "brain-dead policies" of the old Democratic Party. He was a pro-death-penalty free-trader who oversaw the triumph of the Reaganite welfare reform.

But it's as if Obama spent the 1990s in some kind of Democratic Brigadoon and didn't keep up with his party, let alone the nation. Obama, the man of the future, in fact stands athwart that history, yelling "Stop!"

This is the best way to understand his recent comments at a San Francisco fundraiser as he explained his challenge of connecting with rural and small-town voters.

"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania," he said, "and ... the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. ... It's not surprising, then, that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

When his comments sparked a controversy, he dismissed it as a "little typical sort of political flare-up because I said something that everybody knows is true."

But everybody doesn't know anything of the sort. Not in this decade anyway. Obama's merely recycling the liberal cliches of the '80s, namely that Pennsylvania's "bitter" voters have been duped by "wedge issues" like guns, religion and racial resentment. New Democrats recognized that wedge issues are legitimate concerns. Old Democrats remain in denial.

"My rival in this race," he said in 2007, "is not other candidates, it's cynicism." And, of course, Obama is against "division." This treacle was once dismissed as naive idealism, a.k.a. "the politics of hope." But the code has been broken. His real opponent is the "division" that made Reagan, the Bushes and the Clintons possible and brought politics to the center, where the country was all along.

Slate columnist Mickey Kaus has been waiting for Obama to "pivot" to the center as Clinton did in 1992. But it may be that America's most reliably liberal senator doesn't think he has to. He isn't a unifier. He's a counter-revolutionary. And waiting for him to pivot is like waiting for Godot.

Obama...Vote for Me M-Fer!!!
Seriously....you 'libs' are actually supporting this guy?
Are you seeing this guy for who he is, instead of who you want him to be?

Time = Obama's Loss
You can fool some people, some of the time, but you can't fool ALL people ALL of the time. The Clinton's knew that all they had to do was wait - wait for Obama's true self to be revealed. Time has given them that gift. The gift of revelation that Obama is not authentic. Let's review - "typical white people", "punished with a baby" "bitter/frustrated middle americans", and Michelles' and Wright's comments (Obama's close influences). As he continues to goof some more in his amateaur manner, the Clintons will continue to raise doubts about him so much that McCain will walk over and win in November. That is what the Clinton's want because come 2012, Hillary can run, without having to deal with Obama who is unlikely to run having failed to beat McCain. Hillary knows all she has to do is defeat him for McCain because a win for McCain means she gets ressurected in 2012. They have the money, time and she will have the righteous argument that "I told you he was unelectable, now let me win this thing for you". Without a half black guy running or Oprah endorsing him - Hillary becomes the nominee.

Obama is coming into focus...
and the picture isn't pretty. His appeal is based on smoke, mirrors and deliberate deception.

He's merely another Jesse Jackson with a more engaging smile and slightly better camouflage. He's the jaded insurance salesman who's mastered the act of being "sincerely" concerned about your family's future, should you, god forbid, no longer be in the picture.

And all the while he's thinking about that commission check.

Sarah
Come to think, where is Oprah? Can it be she saw the torpedos coming and made haste to depart a sinking ship? Oprah may well believe in her heart the same way as Obama, but she grew up poor and had enough contact with plain white folks to know how to act to get along. Obama did not, and has shown insensitivity or at least an ability to learn. An extremely bright person like Oprah, in close contact and conversation with Obama, may have realized he just does not have the common touch, the ability to appeal that has made her a billionaire. So as much as she would love to have him as president, she is not going to go down with the ship. There are plenty of good black prospects out there. Doug Wilder did well in Virginia.

It's clear to me now ...
... that Obama has embraced post-modern leftist ideology, which has deconstructed American traditions, institutions, social arrangements, norms & mores, and political ideologies to replace them with an elitist worldview whose guiding principle is that the post-modern leftist elite is possessed of a higher consciousness and is thereby entitled to command, manipulate, deceive and otherwise bedevil the benighted masses in order to save them from themselves.

Just out of perverse curiosity and an unfortunate appreciation of the grotesque, I'd like to see what four years of the Obama Administration would look like.

Whoever wins in Nov
will most likely allow the Bush tax cuts to expire.
Does that make you conservatives feel like winners?
We know who and what you're against. Just who and what are you in favor of and is McCain the guy for you? I don't see how your enemies (the libs or any one else who has disagreed with you) can lose in Nov. The country has moved to the left. Tell me how even a McCain victory prevents that?

if...

If this campaign isn't about race, then why is it historic?

If Obama didn't say anything wrong why is he speaking about it at all?

If Obama is the great orator then why can't he speak freely and openly without controversy?

If being President is about judgment, why is he hanging with Rev. Wright?

If Obama isn't racist why is he talking about "simple white folks"?

If character is who you are when no one else is looking, what do we make of no one looking while Obama disrespects Americans in private conversations?

If Obama believes in the strength of America and Americans then why insult them into thinking they are incapable of taking care of themselves by providing a consequence free lifestyle of free healthcare?

If Obama believes Americans are good and decent people why keep denigrating those who work hard and earn enormous amounts of wealth, as bad people not paying their share?

If Obama believes in rolling up your sleeves then why is it that those who have and made themselves wealthy, the ones to blame for everyone else's misfortunes?

“We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, friend, I promise you, Barack Obama is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: Making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections.

You gather a group of middle-aged, middle-class; middle-income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family and American values, personal character, hope and change. Then you make statements about race and divisiveness, you scream about patriotism, you tell them the wealthy, and Republicans are to blame for their lot in life”.

When all is said and done....
Both Hillary and Obama, for all their hype and hysteria, will prove to be nothing more than a couple of ordinary liberal politicians of moderate gifts and minimal accomplishments.

Theirs will turn out to be two of the oldest stories in the world. Hillary got her influence the old fashioned way - she slept with it. And Obama will turn out to be another guy who believes his own press releases, whose pride will lead the way to a downfall.

a slight 'change' from Hillary or McCain
I can't see the appeal of voting for any of the three of them! Who voted for any of these jokers in the primary? It's sad to think of any these 3 becoming the next President. Writing in somebody better for President beats 'lesser of two evils' voting in this election. I'm writing in Ron Paul whom I think would make an excellent President. Obama would be just another big-spender leaving the country in worse condition than it is now in the same as McCain or Hillary would do. Enough a reason for anybody to be 'bitter' when we think of any of these 'status-quo' candidates getting elected President.

Never...
would I vote for someone like Barack Obama. Nope. In his campaign ad running in NC, there is a college student who says Obaba will help with her 25k college loan. WTF? Um, that's just one price to pay for getting ahead in the world. NOBODY OWES YOU THAT! I paid my loans and unfortunately it was an 8% loan on 6K...over ten years. Yeah, so I didn't miss the 60 bucks a month and I saved for the rest of my tuition(FL was cheap) but if anyone thinks Ovomit is going to make the ogovernment smaller or not steal money from the successful in the world, put your heads back onthe sand...Vote for him and you won't be able to afford jack shitt.

Just say No to BO
Obama just pulled another dead rabbit out of his black hat! Obamaelitist is a sham, a pretentious arrogant smoke and mirrors amateur who thinks he is one smokin' hopen' magic master who can weave a web of deceit over "typical stupid, gun-toatin', bitter religious small-town American bigots."
Got news for you, Obama: we aren't taking your little red-brick socialist road to a Marxist government. Some of us "small-town plebeian chumps" also have degrees from the finest universities and we HAVE read our Constitution and we DO love our country and we HAVE served it honorably and we aren't the gullible pedestrian cretin you think we are. Obama isn't cozening anyone but his ill-considered, imprudent, injudicious, halfwitted, unwise, mindless empty arrogant self. By the way, Obama, words do matter. These are real and don't have to be "explained" by what "I meant to say," Ofoolabama.

Obama is discovering that the media
cannot shield him completely. Every 'illusion' has a shelf life, especially ones that that are so universally inconsistent with reality.

The real question is not whether the Obama worshipers will be dissuaded by further revelations (unlikely), but whether the rest of America will embrace such a flawed messiah.

It should be obvious that the Obama campaign is hoping that they can perpetuate the charade until November. Notice that Obama is given a pass by the liberal media, scrupulously avoiding Fox news.

Wanted: Competent Leaders
Obama is a disaster waiting to happen, a snake oil salesman with not a clue on how to run the most affluent country in the world now tottering on the brink of a recession. It makes you feel you are attending a Saturday afternoon movie serial with the hero going over the cliff as the screen flashes "to be continued next week"!

We are supposed to have the smartest business executives in the world in this country but the only viable presidential candidates are two leftover hippies from the Eighties mouthing the same useless cliches stolen from Karl Marx, and a Vietnam War pilot who probably has the record for crashing more planes than any other naval aviator.

Where have all the leaders gone? "Long time passing..."

scooternyc
you ask the redundant questions. Many of us on the right have asked these and similar questions from the start of his campaign. I consider all libs to have flawed thinking but at this point in the process the one positive thing one could say about the missus clinton is that she doesn't appear to dislike america unlike the oblahma's. But it shows the true nature of the oblahma campaign when he can make the missus clinton look marginally better

Obama is correct.
Why can't you people simply realize that the bitter, gun toting, religious fanatics are bitter, gun toting religious fanatics? Obama is right to call them bitter and he is right to say that they don't like him because anyone but white, Christian morons are scapegoats for all that has gone wrong. That's not to say that Obama is a good candidate, but he is the one riding on the straight talk express, that's for sure.

yuppie?
I guess this is the time in the political season when Republican spin monkeys try to throw whatever they have against the wall to see if it will stick.

I can predict that the yuppie label will not stick. After graduating number one at Harvard Law, what kind of job do you think Obama could have procured for himself?

Obama turned down multiple offers for high-paying fast-track positions on Wall St, and instead, took a job doing community organizing on the South Side of Chicago for $10,000 a year.

Yuppies were people obsessed with wealth and status symbols. Obama was clearly not a yuppie. He was someone who chose to use his talents to give the disadvantaged a voice in politics.

Oh, and on "bittergate". It seems to me the real elitist snobs are the ones who think that small town Americans are so emotionally fragile that they would be personally offended by Obama's clumsy, but true, statement. In other words, all of the right wing spin monkeys are the elitists; presuming that they need to don their big white hats and ride to the rescue of these poor, helpless, small-town folks from the ravages of big bad Obama.

The Republican Party is in desperate need of new leadership. And new spin monkeys too. Is this the best you can do Goldberg?

Phylo out.

savage99
You ask a great question, where is the Queen of All Media these days? It seems that Ms. Winfrey has decided that it is in her best interest not to be so closely allied with Obama, since a lot of "simple" white women watch her show, but her magazines, and make her rich. And I wonder what she would think if the Democrats decided to tax the "windfall profits" of entertainers. I bet she, and others, wouldn't be so gung-ho on "taxing the rich" then!

Obama is an elitist
It's true that Obama is an elitist. He's an intellectual elite. In other words: he's wicked smart.

And I think that, after eight years of a guy who thinks with his gut, Americans are ready for a guy with a high-power CPU and a highly tuned faculty for critical thinking. Combine those assets with his even-keeled temperament, his like-ability, and his remarkable ability to persuade and you've got the makings of a great president.

Phylo out.

wildwest
If you think Obama doesn't love America you haven't done your research. Here a hint: You have to get outside of rightwing world to see the truth about the man. The right wing spin monkeys are snowing you dude.

Try reading Obama's books. I guarantee you will be impressed with his take on America, and just about everything else.

Phylo out.

Silo fizer
All that you say can be explained in the context of Obama knowing that his politics was his career. His altruism does not seem to afflict his wife however.

Stop spreading the manure. The odor is beginning to permeate his campaign.

intelligent presidents
history has shown that the best presidents were of average intelligence but had a vision and the ability to work with congress. Woodrow Wilson was considered to be one of the most intelligent but still failed because he lacked the understanding to be anything more than an elitist who knew better than congress over what was right for the country. But thanks to the likes of swimmer kennedy and currently personified by redi and pelosi divisive politics are here to stay. The oblahma with no record of reaching across the aisle or engaging in anything of a bi=partisan nature will only inherit a congress already incapable of doing the peoples business. Fortunately for america that nightmare won't come true. While many may dislike his politics many more won't vote for someone who, along with his wife act as though they dislike america and americans but feel they are somehow owed the presidentcy. But trhe oblahma has been successful in one thing, he makes the missus clinton appear more likeable even though the two of them are soul mates in the views of future policies and ideas

Silo
As far as Obama's books; The very title "The Audacity of Hope" makes me gag. What is audacious about hope? Hope is nothing more than passive victimhood and the refuge for those who fail to take action about the circumstances of their lives.

Anyone can hope. What has it ever accomplished? Although it is the perfect metaphor for Obama.

Phylo protesteth too much
He chose to go help a troubled community instead of taking a job on wall street. And for that he got pretty darn rich. I want one of those 'community activist' jobs!
(Seriously, he eschewed a 'salary' for connections to REAL wealth, some of which are pretty shady).
Phylo, it's clear you love the guy, but honestly, you do protest too much! Thanks for the laugh of the day.

Herbert of the New York Times
wrote today that Obama's California speech was wrong because he didn't say what is really the problem of his lack of success with the Indiana white working class. The problem is that he is black and he should be saying that and confronting that.

Liberals will say anything to excuse Obama.

Phylo
Ahhh, now I get it.....we would all love Obama if we would just "research" him....and learn to disregard all the actual words spewing out of his mouth.

Sorry, I couldn't drink your kool-aid even if I wanted to....it must be due to my antipathy for those unlike me, combined with my bitter, clingy and typical white person outlook.

sun the 1
the questions that remains to be answered by the oblahma remains was his community outreach efforts and then his seeking his black identity merely obstacles to be achieved to attain his goal of becoming a politician with a built in identity advantage. Having spent a large portion of his life being raised by his white relatives why didn't that part of his being also need enhancing. It seems that liberal elitism has certainly been fully ingrained but his clinging to black victimhood seems to be the ticket he has placed his hopes to gain the white house. America deserves better tgyhan what he is trying to foist on this country

More ofthe usual from Phylo
Phylo Se Fiser writes: ""yuppie?
I guess this is the time in the political season when Republican spin monkeys try to throw whatever they have against the wall to see if it will stick.""

Phylo, you have your head so far up obama's derrierre that you need to ask him to unzip his fly so you can get some air.

Just in case you're too stupid to realize it, (entirely possible) It Was Not "republican Spin Monkeys" who put out the info about Obama's "gaffe", it was Other Democrats!
Just like itwas other loyal democrats who released the videos of Wright. It seems that us "evil republicans" have been upstaged by Evil Democrats!

Of course to a lefty like yourself, silly thngs like facts don't matter, right? The "sheeple" will swallow whatever tripe you spew, because you're just as much an elitist as your hero the empty suit.

It's gonna be fun watching your head explode this fall when the democrats snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Pretty sad Phylo, when the Best the dems can provide are being slammed around by an old man who can't even fly a plane right

Can you say John Kerry 2?

scooternyc
you pulled that right out of An American President movie starring Michael Douglas and Annette Benning.

Nice job, though!

Obama
I think it is a sad state of affairs when American's can be so taken in by The Medicine Man - the great orator who promises you his brand of snake oil is what you need to solve all your problems -

I can only guess its because its the group who believe the government owes them (too lazy to be responsible for their own lives) or they are too uneducated to research the man's character.

The once great Democratic party of JFK and Truman and even the socialist FDR (he was patriotic) has fallen to new lows when all they can submit as presidential candidates is two very flawed people - Obama the Marxist? Hillary the socialist?

If Hillary gets in the White House - better hide the silverware. They've already taken some of the furniture!!!

Phylo's Republican Spin Monkeys.
Let's see about some of the "Republican Spin Monkeys" who have been bashing obama lately.

We have Geraldine Ferraro, Yeah, she's a right winger.

How about the guy who owns B.E.T. Yeah, he's a major right winger.

James Carville? Yeah he's Reagan's twin brother right Phylo?

Seems like all the bashing is coming from "Fellow Democrats" not Republican Spin Monkeys.

It must be really easy to be a dedicated lefty, just shut off your brain and do whatever your "betters" tell you to do.

I'm so glad I learned to think for myself.

Otherwise I might be a liberal like Phylo.

jacy
a better description is snake oil salesman. He is selling the same old nostrum only in a new economy size with a fancier label.

Is America ready
for an African American in the White house? I believe so, however Obama is not the one. I would also ask you to read his books, they show that the Obama that is now being understood is the real Obama. He lives in the past in the same way that Jackson and his ilk do. Will they still be blaming racism and slavery in another 200 years? As soon as many of the most influential African Americans stop seeing success in America as becoming white, true reconciliation will occur. It would be irresponsible to say that racism does not exist in 2008, it would also be irresponsible to suggest that it exists only among White Americans. I do not for one minute think it exists to the extent that we are led to believe. Why are White Americans afraid to say that we are tired of being blamed for something that we have condemned over and over again, something that should have never happened.
If we are to agree that Obama’s Grandmother was a racist because she was a little nervous to go back to the Bus stop where she had been pestered by a panhandler, who happened to be black, then anyone who would be nervous about being in Watts after dark would also be racists including armed, black, Police officers.
I believe that the American dream is attainable by any American that refuses to be a victim and is willing to work hard. Our strength as a Country is the ability to move forward despite the obstacles of the future and because of the lessons of the past. Obama would have us live in the past and "Hope" for a better future.

Jims Jab
Well said!

Too bad it flew right over the heads of every liberal reading this page.

It has to be really hard on the dems right now. They're so wrapped up in Identity Politics that it has to be tearing some of them apart. "Do I vote for obama, and become a Sexist, or should I vote for Hillary and become a Racist?"

Decisions decisions! LOL

Boutte-hole
Boutte:
yeah, butt, and if that very gloomy scenario (that perfectly plays into the cynical defeatist mindset of all liberals if the couintry isn't being run by liberals) were to happen putting a socialist antiAmerican divisive, condescending terrorist appeasing inexperienced hack is going to solve al the problems, right?

Obama - yuppie
sure the last few years he has been young - glad
47 is considered young; urban - sure, is his
neighborhood considered yuppie - most of the
south side isn't; professional - yes, at least
starting in 1993.

I don't associate yuppie as a bad thing but most
people do.

Is this important to the election?
Maybe, to you, not to me, though.

Barack Hussein Obama...RIP?
Obama's problems were not brought on by Republican 'spin monkeys',as has been asserted here, today.

Obama's problem is the light that is being beamed on him. Evil loves darkness, cannot stand light. As long as he was an unknown little senator who could not decide which way to vote on almost every bill that came up,he was in the dark.

On the surface,he looks like a good prospect for the presidency.Speaks well, looks gentlemanly and knows the right words to say to people who are tired of the status quo.

Thanks to a prolonged primary, his slick surface is being scratched and a lot of folks don't like what they see.The curtain has been lifted and the 'WIZARD OF ODDS' is seen as an imposter who has been fooling the naive ,far too long.

It is time for some hard questions for Obama. Make him talk about his allegiances in this country and abroad. We really don't know who he is and what he believes in except that he wants to be president. At this point...he is asking too much.

Phylo
Obama had a 6 figure legal job in Chitown before he launched his short political career (2 term State Legislature 1/3 term US Senate). He bought a Hyde Park Mansion for Ruzzo for pennies on the dollar, sends his children to private schools, and vacations in Cancun. In the meantime his wife holds down a $600,000 year job in the Loop when she is not belly aching about "whitey".

The Obama's are wealthy, bitter, upscale yups with neo-fascists dreams of "Renewing Amerika".

everyones-facts?
""I don't associate yuppie as a bad thing but most people do.
Is this important to the election?
Maybe, to you, not to me, though.""

Being Young and Upwardly Mobile is never a bad thing, but that's not the point Goldberg was making, he was saying that Obama is an Elitist who thinks he knows how we should live our lives better than we do.

Of course being a dyed-in-the-wool liberal everyone, you'll never be able to understand our angst, because you believe the same tripe Obama does.

It's really Easy to be a democrat, just turn off your brain and believe everything your "Betters" tell you.

I thought the battle cry of the 60s was "Question Authority!" Now it's become, "We need more Authority over us because we're incapable of making our own decisions!"

You libs are such "Free Thinkers"!!! LOL

The GOP
This article just proves that the GOP are getting desperate in taking Obama down. So far none of their swiftboating has worked. It may have worked in 2000 and 2004 but Americans are wiser now, and see through the BS. The swiftboaters have been throwing crap at the wall hopeing something would stick, to no prevail. At this point they are hopeing to score a little splatter.

Look at the shape that our country is in because we elected a fool into office twice. All because, as your Rush would say "Drive by Media"

Use your brain Americans, This country can't afford to have another bad president. I'm not saying Obama is the answer, I'm saying may the best man win and don't let the bs effect you.

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
"Michelle Obama is never so eloquent as when she's complaining about the burden of student loans for her two Ivy League degrees and covering the high cost of summer camp and piano lessons for her kids on her family's half-million-dollars-a-year income."

THE WHOLE OBAMA SHOW MAKES ME VOMIT!!!

ex-Wyomingite
""I don't even know what kind of Kool-Aid it is you drink to translate Obama's cyncial and ruthless path to power as being about giving "the disadvantaged a voice in politics." Perhaps to someone who thinks "Mary Poppins" was a documentary?""

The sad part is there are millions in this country that actually believe the same garbage.
They think the 90s were the apogee of american achievement, and the clinton admin was the "Golden Age".

It's frightening to know that millions of my fellow countrymen are willing to hand over their civil rights for handouts and "free" health care.

I remember when being an american meant "Having a Pair" and taking care of your own responsibilities. Of course, now, no one is responsible for anything, we're all "Victims".

Phylo Se Fiser
Wonder who afforded your hero OBAMA his Harvard Education??? His Bigotted White Grandma or His Drunken Ethiopian Father????? Just something to ponder?

Question
Why are conservatives so fascinated by liberals?

It's all they ever think, talk, or write about. It seems to be the obsession du jour, and makes alot of money for columnists and radio jockeys, but what drives it?

Maybe it's a substitute for actual ideas.

What is wrong with you BO supporters?

BO IS the most leftist person in Congress... BASED on his votes!

And you're BELIEVING his rhetoric about no left America and no right America, there is only the United States of America?

Everything out of his mouth screams SOCIALISM... and to hear his wife talk about him, he's a died in the wool Marxist!

That doesn't disturb you? And if it doesn't disturb you, isn't that something to question?

BO is nothing but a huckster and and Elmer Gantry.

icedog
You say that I want you to read his books and ignore the words he "spews" out of his mouth.

Wrong, I want you to actually pay attention to the words he speaks. Why don't you sift through all of the words he has said and try to come up with the best examples of what makes him so despicable to you. Okay?

Phylo out.

rowly
the sad reality is that the oblahma is the candidate of the status quo. He has pledged loyalty to all the special interest groups the dims kowtow to. He has promised increased govt spending. He has pledged more funding to make entitlement programs finally work and has promised the far left he will surrender america to the barbarians. I haven't heard him propose anything that sets him apart fromanything already not codified in the dims politcal mantra

jp2000
the facsination is that those on the left are incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time. This idea that the left thinks america is both unable and incapable of making choices for their own lives without another govt program or some level of govt guidance. If the oblahma is the left's answer to inspired leadership and vision then that party has really sunk to depths of desparation. The country can do better than trust a candidate who acts as though america owes him the presidentcy to absolve themselves of past sins and that under his far left thinking we will again find our direction as a nation is a sad pathetic joke. Perhaps the notion of proving soros and his worldview agenda is what the dims have morphed into. But the current fight between the oblahma and the missus clinton has shown the hazards of the identity politics the dims have mastered and promoted. They finally got what they wished for

Yes, Clintons supporters have been going after Obama too. Which makes it all the more impressive that he is doing as well as he is. He's taking on Hillary and the Republicans at the same time.

What chaps my hide is the way the right wing spin monkeys twist Obama's words into meaning something else. They all said that his comments in SF basically mean that he has disdain for rural folks. Obama's words don't say that. The right wing spin monkeys have to put words in his mouth to imply that. They can't just let his words stand on their own because no one would see what there is to be offended about. They have to add their own words to them to make his words sound worse then they are. And the said thing is that you folks just lap it up like mother's milk, totally unquestioningly. So sad.

The disconnect between what you righties believe about Obama and who he really is couldn't be any wider. Sooner or later you're going to realize this. But will that make you question the veracity and the integrity of the right wing spin monkeys? No. You'll just carry on as usual and forget that you ever hated Obama. So will the spin monkeys themselves. "Oh I've always said Obama was a decent guy. I defended him on numerous occasions." Blah, blah blah.

alot of anger here, not bitter mind you but anger.

how can anyone do anything worse to this country than where we are at now.

we are in an endless war

we have the bush recession getting deeper everyday

the feds are bailing out bear-stearns which savage claims is the crime of the century because the top executives started selling their stock 2 years ago and have made millions.

bush and mccain both agree that global warming is a problem.

Loved the waiting for Godot reference! The Dems campaign has turned into the theatre of the absurd.

I know you were waiting eagerly for four years, which then (much to your chagrin) turned into eight years, to finally get rid of Bush. I also know you were extremely confident that the candidate with a “D” at the end of their name would be guaranteed to win the 2008 election.

Now you’re getting extremely worried because Obama is your horse (you actually decided in 2000, you just didn’t know his name at that time), and what you believed should have been a cakewalk, is now becoming more disastrous each and every day (Rev Wright, Tony Rizzo, terrorist Bill Ayers, flag pin and national anthem controversy, invade Pakistan, “typical white person”, “clinging to guns and religion”, “racist white grandmother“, “antipathy to people who are unlike them”, etc, etc).

Obama could stand up at NAACP meeting tomorrow and scream “Kill Whitey!” and you would be on here the next day explaining how we are “taking it out of context” or how we’re just too ignorant to understand the subtlety of Obama’s words.

The bottom-line is that you know you’re stuck with Obama and you will continue to rationalize every statement he makes and any new revelations discovered, regardless of whatever they may be. You have no choice.

Phylo - inquiry
What is the source of your information that Sen. Obama graduated #1 in his Harvard Law School class?

I know that he was elected president of the Harvard Law Review, but the same NYT article reporting that election also states that "Harvard . . . no longer ranks its law students for any purpose including a guide to recruiters." (This, of course, was describing the polity in place at the time, in 1990.) See http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0CE2DC163 1F935A35751C0A966958260

In fact, the same article noted that the Harvard's grade-based selection system for law review editors "came under attach in the 1970's" and was replaced by a "new system" that was "meant to help insure that minority students became editors of The Law Review."

Sen. Obama's law school achievements may be based far more on affirmative action and popularity than on any academic talent.

You don't suppose that he'd be willing to release his transcript and LSAT score?

faulty thesis
Mr. Goldberg's comments, while spirited, are misleading for several reasons. Using the recent controversy over the infamous "bitter speech" he hamhandedly attempts to link Obama with the 1980's stereotypical yuppie lifestyle. He fails, however, to provide any substantive support to make this argument.

First, his essay is less about analysis than it is about redefining the Obama persona. He repeatedly uses words and phrases like "self-hating", "self-loathing", and "guilt" over and over. Strong words, but not very accurate. He doesn't supply any factual basis for these terms, outside of a comment taken out of context.

What working parent has not felt torn over the conflicting demands of job and family? I don't know if that qualifies as "self-loathing," as Mr. Goldberg seems to imply. He does try to score some cheap political points with his readers by reminding them of Mrs. Obama's salary, as if wealthy people should be immune to career/family struggles.

Second, it would be foolish to claim that the recent "bitter" comment harkens back to wedge issues propagated by the Democratic party. Both parties have their idological red meat to inspire their party's faithful, but the G.O.P. (personified by Karl Rove-style politics) seems to have been much more successful in this regard. Judging by some of the posters to this website, the red state/blue state division seems to have hit a responsive chord. To be glib, love your country while hating the most of the people who live here.

Lastly, the essence of the "bitter" statement has already been parroted by politicians on both sides of the political aisle. It is not my purpose to defend his statement, but rather to highlight Goldberg's innaccurate linking of Obama's statement to some hypothetical yuppie guilt.

Parsing words
The phylos and other losers on the left keep trying desperately to convince everyone that Obama was just saying what everyone believes. I think the focus on the word 'bitter' detracts from the aspect of his word choices that is far more revealing. By equating "...guns...religion...antipathy to people who aren't like them...anti-immigrant sentiment...(and)anti-trade sentiment", Obama is telling us that ALL of these things are equally reprehensible. That isn't going to fly with a majority of Americans for whom faith - no matter which religion they believe in - is very important and not comparable with liking or disliking guns or immigrants.

Do you think that Obama has noticed this--that being a President (a dem Pres.,whose financial income tends to get "overlooked" by the Press) is the route to greater wealth (& a lot less work) than being a Harvard lawyer?

I'm afraid this time you're the one taking it out of context. Remember, Mr. Goldberg has extensive knowlege of the liberal mindset.
Liberalism is little more than self-loathing and guilt. Put into that context, his statements ring true.

Yes the yuppie analogy was a bit clumsy, but only if you never had to deal with the "Typical Yuppie" (hey if Obama can do it I can too).
The typical yuppie Goldberg is talking about was the Brie and Merlot crowd who drove only a BMW,Lexus, or Mercedes, and looked down their noses at anyone who wasn't just like them.

In that respect, Obama is most definitely a Yuppie. A selfish, manufactured, "plastic" person, problem is, his paint is beginning to peel.

jackpine Savage
Honest people can interpret Obama's statement in different ways.

Here's how I interpret them:

First of all, saying that folks in small economically depressed towns are bitter is simply a common sense fact. Anyone who disagrees with that is either uninformed, or they're selling something.

Knowing he is a religious man himself, it makes no sense to say that Obama is disdainful of religious people. He's saying that, when times are tough, you cling to what you can count on in your life.

And here is a quote from his book about himself:

"…throughout my years in Springfield, I had clung to the notion that politics could be different, and that the voters wanted something different… "

So he doesn't think that "cling" is a demeaning term.

Also, in his book, Obama makes the effort to explain to gun grabbing liberals why rural folks value their guns. So it makes no sense to say that he is demeaning hunters or gun owners.

And as far as the anti-immigrant comments, John McCain has said almost the identical things about rural Iowans. He says they are upset about their towns suddenly becoming 20% Mexican after someone opens up a meatpacking plant. And again, it's true: a lot of these folks blame their job loses on illegal immigrants. They also blame free trade pacts like NAFTA.

The difference between the way you interpret his remarks and the way I do can be explained by the fact that I know Obama better than you do because I've been a big fan for years. But all you know is the quote, and what the right wing spin monkeys tell you about Obama.

And from what I know, I am confident that you are having the wool pulled over your eyes.

Hannity has an agenda. You do realize that, right?

Your position seems to be that we must believe whatever Sen. Obama says publicly. That's dangerous gullibility.

reaction to bittergate 2008!!!
Here's what a reader at Andrew Sullivan's site had to say about it:

My background: I'm an educated centrist, and as it were, gun-owner and sometime duck hunter.
On the 'elitist' debate: I've been amused to see the likes of Bill Kristol, Roger Kimball and Rich Lowry and other conservative commentators so incredibly desperate in their efforts to convince people like me that we're being looked down upon by Obama -- a black guy raised by a single mom who worked as an organizer among the poor of Chicago, etc. etc.
I personally don't feel in the least that Obama is an elitist. Rather, I feel the elitists are those highly educated, inside-the-beltway weenies like Kristol, the bow-tie wearing Kimball, the UVA grad and prepster Lowry who are tripping over themselves to tell me how offended I ought to feel when I know damn well I'm not offended. Id be shocked if Roger Kimball, Lowry or God knows Bill Kristol know the first thing about hunting ducks, or if they could survive ten minutes in a cold duck blind before dawn, the artery-clogging breakfast that follows or the round of beer and whiskey drinking that goes on the night before.

In my opinion, listening to these folks go on and on about how offended I should be makes me feel a hell of a lot more condescended to than hearing some single throw-away line at a fundraiser. Obama said his thing once; these wankers won't shut up. It's as if they think I'm too stupid to figure things out for myself, so they can't miss an opportunity to tell me how I've been slighted. Well sorry, weenies -- I just don't feel slighted, and that's because I'll be damned if I'm going to pick a president based on a stupid gaffe when there is a war going on and when the economy is going in the shiitter. These guys must really think I'm a moron.

I couldn't agree more.

You think his religiosity is phony?

Did you see him on the Faith show on MSNBC on Sunday?

He answered deeply personal questions about his faith for an hour and a half.

If we are a phony, something would've shown up and the right wing spin monkeys would be repeating it endlessly. Hillary did look like a phony. She might be serious about faith, but she hasn't considered the issues very deeply. And McCain is so uncomfortable with his faith that he chicked out of the appearance. Obama, by contrast, was eloquent and honest and it was obvious that he has given all of these matters of faith serious and deep consideration.

For example, when he was asked if life begins at conception, he answered that he hasn't come to a firm conclusion on that. That shows that he isn't afraid to say "I don't know", which shows sincerity and a lack of false certainty. It also shows that he has given it far deeper consideration than those who hold a knee jerk position that life begins at conception. People who believe that simply haven't wrestled with the deeper issues involved. The fact is, no one can prove when life begins. After all, the sperm is alive, is it not?

Did you know...that in this country there is such a thing as a 'professional politician'?
While this inflicts both sides of the aisle, most pro pols & bureaucrats ARE 'libs'/dems.
Obama moved to Chicago IN ORDER TO BEGIN HIS POLITICAL CAREER.
He cut a fellow dem (a black woman)off at the knees--it was her 'turn'(next in line to run) for the US Senate seat--he blew her out of the water, & grabbed the seat himself. He had previously supported her when both were in the Ill. senate.
Mmmmmmm.....sounds like he had a political career in mind from the start.
He went to a 'buppie' church in Chicago...to get some black street cred.
BUT...when he went out to speak in front of 'whitey', he left out all the anti-american,anti-white bilge that GAVE him his 'street cred' with blacks...oh no, with 'whitey' in the crowd, he talked about 'uniting' & moving past race.
Mmmmmmm....sounds like a 'pro politican' who had his sights on a higher office to me.
About the 'spin monkeys'...do you remember when Sen Biden called Obama "bright, articulate & clean"?
The reaction of the press to this compliment was...to force Biden to apologize.
Here's something for you to do...some research!!!
Maybe then you can leave all your hatred & bigotry behind you.

You're making some wildly off the mark assumptions about Obama, and it would take hours to correct them all. May I suggest that you actually go read his books. That really is a good way to get to know the man and what his values and attitudes towards politics are. I'm not suggesting that that be the only information you take into consideration. Read what his critics have to say too. I certainly do.

I spend a great deal of time listening to right wing radio and reading right wing propaganda on this website. Missing the point
Obama’s comments about rural America are actually consistent with his overall style in engaging with Americans. Unlike most lame duck politicians, Obama challenges the thinking of Americans with the truth, instead of just pandering to us by telling us what we want to hear, while thinking differently behind our backs. His comments about rural America present no better example of this.

In his speech about race, Obama said both black and white Americans have legitimate grievances about issues like AA, school busing, and racism. He said that both blacks and whites can engage in counterproductive behavior as a way of expressing their anger about these grievances. In addition to this, he said that both groups allow politicians to exploit these angers as a way to “gin up votes” along racial and cultural lines, and that this exploitation prevents the problems that each group faces from getting solved.

A lesser politician would have just recited cliché lines from MLK while ignoring the ugliness, and dare I say “bitterness”, that both blacks and whites carry with them in America in regards to race. The comments about rural America could have been expressed better by Obama. However, Obama was just saying that the problems of Americans will never be solved as long as we are clouded with anger over cultural issues like race, religion or gun ownership.

rowely
Who are his backers?
He has nearly 1.5 million donors to his campaign. And because of that, he doesn't need to take money from the usual suspects in Washington. That's one of the main reasons I support him. Because his political mandate comes from grass roots organizing he isn't accountable to the special interests. He doesn't owe them anything. Nor has he promised them anything. He doesn't need to.

As far as Hannity goes, he lies by putting words in Obama's mouth. When he says that Obama is really saying that he looks down on rural white people, that's a lie. It's called paraphrasing, and it's one of the favorite tools of the spin monkeys. They use it to paint an unfair picture of their political opponents. Pay attention to whenever they use words like "What he really means is..." "Or Basically he's saying..." Or, "He's essentially saying... I gaurantee you, 9 out of 10 times the next words out of his mouth will be lies. Prager does the same thing.

Now, yes, it is possible to paraphrase someone fairly. But when you do it unfailry, to intentionally smear someone, it's a lie.

And as far as the terrorists go, there is a reason why no one else is taking the story seriously. The fact that Obama might have friends who happen to know these old sixties terrorists is a handy way for Hannity to raise suspicions about Obama, but it proves nothing. Besides, these so-called terrorists can't be that dangerous, or they would be behind bars.

I have a friend down the street who was once a Black Panther. He couldn't be a nicer, friendlier more decent neighbor. He's a leader in our community. If I were running for president, Hannity would be telling everyone that I'm sympathetic to the Black Panthers. It's pure power politics. Hannity has a very specific job: he is a political operative, a professional propagandist whose job is to make the left look as bad as possible while shining the most positive possible light on the right.

bringing up roadkill makes my tastebuds water. Brings back my sc days. We generally went after roadkill in threesome. One could eat while the other two watched the traffics. Oh the nostalgia

Phylo
Yes, I think that Sen. Obama's religiousity is phony. I've looked into the theology of TUCC and Jeremiah Wright, the disciple of James H. Cone, whose "black liberation theology" is nothing but white-hating neo-Marxism. It doesn't really deserve the name theology. I suspect that this reflects Sen. Obama's true belief, as it appears that TUCC is the only church he has meaningfully attended, and Wright his only significant religious teacher.

As to Sen. Obama's answer to the "life begins at conception" question, this can be equally well interpreted as a cop-out to avoid offending anyone. Actions speak louder than words, and Sen. Obama's actions include opposing the partial-birth abortion ban and opposing a born-alive infant protection law. He either doesn't think that human life begins until birth (or maybe even a little after birth), or just doesn't care to protect the life of "inconvenient" persons. Either one is morally reprehensible, in my opinion.

I have deeply thought about the beginning of human life for over 20 years, both before and after becoming a born-again Christian. As an adult, I have uniformly believed that life begins at conception. This is not a "knee-jerk" reaction, and your characterization of it as such betrays pro-abortion prejudices.

For the sake of argument, let's say I accept Sen. Obama's assertion that he doesn't know whether or not a fetus is a human life. It follows that he doesn't know whether or not an abortion brutally kills an innocent human life. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, according to Sen. Obama. It seems to me that the only moral thing to do, in the face of such uncertainty, is to err on the side of protecting innocent life.

...and if it was a deer, you could take some home to the kids....doggie bag, anyone?

Phylo...What What What?
So....I raise many valid points--NONE of which you contradict--and then you say...I ONLY listen to 'right-wing' sources????
PROVE IT.
phylo:"You're making some wildly off the mark assumptions about Obama'"
WHICH ones? HOW are they 'off the mark'?
(BTW, Obama's rise to power in Ill. was chronicled on CNN...they're a Right-Wing source...Right?)
Phylo:"..go read his books.."
OK..you buy it, & send it to me.
I REFUSE to put 1 g-d nickel in that racist's pocket.
However, the excerpts I've read prove my point: Obama is a man who seethes with hostility toward Whites...even his own grandma.
It seems to me,Sir, from your uninformed & error-riddled posts, that YOU need to listen to something besides the Left-wing (so-called) MSM.
Phylo:"I spend a great deal of time listening to Right Wing radio..."
For starters, you are an outright liar.
People ON the Right like to listen to CONSERATIVE radio HOSTS...there IS no 'right-wing'radio. Do you refer to NPR as LEFT-wing radio?
...I didn't think so.
If you really want to support Obama, then you MUST be able to answer the serious questions that have arisen about his record, his character, his associations...AND WHAT HE HAS SAID, both on & off the record.
Here is an experiment for you:
The best CONSERVATIVE on radio today is Rush Limbaugh.
Tune into his show over, say, 6 weeks.
If you want to consider yourself to be well informed on the issues you'll have to listen to sources that are more supportive of AMERICA.
You can't just rely on the left wing 'Mainstream' media for your news & information and expect to get a clear picture of Reality.
Now...how about answering my questions.

Poor Bitter Phylo
""And as a matter of fact I do know about depression in small towns. My mom has a cabin up in the UP of Michigan. ""

Well I don't have a cabin in a depressed area, I Live in one. (Not far from your mom's cabin) This area was in a recession long before most of the state which only got worse when our liberal governor started raising taxes to "fix our state economy"

There is no bitterness involved, just naked anger because the union controlled robots in the detroit area forced the rest of the state to suffer a socialist governor.

Don't try to lecture me on the "bitterness" of small town people phylo, a little knowlege can be dangeropus, you're entering places you know nothing about.

Of course as a "Typical Liberal" You think you know what I'm thinking better than I do, so tell me Phylo, whay should I be "Clinging" to my guns and religion? Tell me about my "anti-trade opinions when I make my living in the "Global Economy" Tell me I'm clinging to my xenophobic fears of those different that I am.
You're so smart phylo, you know us conservatives so well why don't you elighten us and tell us what we're really thinking.

I think we could all use a good laugh.

Oh by the way, I'm the one who looks different then most around here, should I be afriad of my "Bitter" neighbors?

Amen! I join you in your anger.I am angry because every day the 'progressives' pass down another rule and we must abide by it.

Why do they want the Federal Government to be in every aspect of our lives? I just wish the Government would leave me alone.I don't need their rules.

The biggest difference in them and us.They feel. We think.By the time they get around to thinking..we have lost another freedom we will never get back.

They are despicable and just like all dangerous diseases, should be eradicated by some very strong medicine.I wish we conservatives had the antidote, but we don't.

Either of the people running this year will be a disaster to freedom loving people.Big government is their answer to everything.

""Where is your sense of humor? Lighten up! Huh!!""

That's impossible Willi, Phylo like most hard core libs had a (state funded) Humorectomy.

The only thing liberals find amusing is when a soldier dies in a war zone, or someone gets hit in the crotch on youboob.

Bravo Jackpine
Bravo theta and ex-wyomingite!!! Concise and to the point! Unfortunatly there are none so blind as those who will not see. I sure enjoy the slicing and dicing tho!

"For example, when he was asked if life begins at conception, he answered that he hasn't come to a firm conclusion on that.
Actually what this shows is that he doesn't want to p*** anyone off. The deeper issues you speak of are taking responsibility for not keeping it in your pants, or, I just don't want a child right now, or, I don't know whether the daddy will stick around. These are not deep issues, they are unfortunately, the result of liberal cultural philosophies that are tearing this country apart. To pro-choice folks life begins when they decide whether or not they want to keep the child. And you wonder why so many Americans have no respect for human life and why kids are walking into schools and shooting up the place. Life begins at the moment of conception, how is that knee jerk, it is scientifically provable. It is too bad that our forefathers did not draft a bill of responsibilities along with the bill of rights but then they had no idea that we would have a large part of this country that so totally believed that it should be the responsibility of the government to take care of them cradle to grave.

Jims Jab and Phylo
Jims Jab, good points!

Phylo:

The question isn't whether a sperm is alive. I have few moral qualms about killing things that aren't human. I'll swat a fly or a mosquito, and never feel a moment's guilt.

Yes, this is an anthropocentric viewpoint. We're talking about human morality. I think that both theists and secularists agree that humans are the only moral beings on the planet.

So the question is whether something is a human life. Obviously, a sperm is not. It is not viable, does not have a complete genetic code, cannot reproduce, and will die in a few days if left alone.

There's a good argument that, just as obviously, a fertilized ovum is a human life. It is viable, has a complete genetic code, will engage in cellular division, and if left alone will usually develop into a living, breathing, bouncing baby in 6-9 months. Further, after birth, it will ordinarily grow into an adult human and be capable of reproduction.

ADVICE
Read this piece and read the Jerry Bowyer piece 'James madison to America: This is what we warned you about'.

Both good pieces and the Democrats especially should read them

.I have a question
Did anyone hear the laughter of the people Obama told the story too? They LoL. Did anyone hear the people in the pews when the good Rev. DAMED America? They were on their feet screaming and LOL and a good old fashion AMEN!! But Obama was not in church that day, HUH. The Rev. was his mintor, adviser, friend and he had no idea the Rev. felt that way about Anerica, whites, Jews or anything negitive? WOW! 20 YEARS people. Now that is what I would call a lack of communication.

Dede
Perhaps the church should have excommunicated Obama for not paying attention to the sermons.

OBAMA = RACIST
I read Barack Obama's Philadelphia "Speech" with intent on finding essence and substantive depth in this man. The 5,000 words consisted of approximately 35 paragraphs.

What I surmised from his words was: "gone to some of the best schools in America" from which instead of gratitude and transcending narrow racial thinking and attitudes Barack Obama proceeded to discuss color, color, race, muddle, more excuses, thick Biblical analogy, closed black racism, racial prejudice, past-present personality lock, racial accusations towards non-blacks, more muddled economic theory, mushiness, static societal attitudes and opinions, added racism, rage and sympathy suck demagoguery.

This may have been the speech that made Chris Matthews pee in his pants, but I found nothing Churchillian, Lincolnesque, or inspiring as from Martin Luther King.

I concede, I did not cross the Bridge at Selma; ergo, my sins of omission are there but to construe and thus call me a "racist" in fact or form is gross injustice which I stand in complete opposition and rejection.

Mr. Obama, I do not measure you by the color of your skin but I do consider your words to be measurement of your thoughts.
