Screening for terrorists as nicely as possible

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that the Transportation Security Administration is testing sophisticated machines that use elaborate algorithms to determine whether air travelers have "hostile intent." The machines measure your sweat output, pulse rate and other tells while asking questions such as: "Are you planning to immigrate illegally?" "Are you smuggling drugs?" "Do these stupid questions make you feel like committing a terrorist act?"

OK, I made the last one up, and I shouldn't make fun because supposedly the Israelis have figured out how to make this stuff work. The thinking behind this program rests on the assumption that searching for every kind of potential weapon or explosive is too reactive. Find the bad motives, and the rest will follow.

If it works, great. But one of the frustrating reasons the U.S. government feels compelled to spend all of this time and energy coming up with computerized lie detectors is that civil libertarians can't trust airport security personnel to do the same thing. Why? Because it's possible for humans to be racist.

The TSA's more established security system, Screening Passengers by Observation Technique, or SPOT, relies on human intelligence instead of the artificial kind. Teams are trained to scrutinize passengers for more than 30 questionable behaviors, according to the Journal: "They look for obvious things like someone wearing a heavy coat on a hot day, but also for subtle signs like vocal timbre, gestures and tiny facial movements that indicate someone is trying to disguise an emotion."

This apparently is unacceptable for civil libertarians.

"Our concern is that giving TSA screeners this kind of responsibility and discretion can result in their making decisions not based on solid criteria but on impermissible characteristics such as race," the ACLU's Gregory T. Nojeim told the Journal.

In other words, while our enemies are coming up with ingenious ways to murder Americans, we're coming up with ingenious ways to search for our enemies in the nicest manner possible. No amount of training, it seems, can immunize against the real threat to America: the possibility that somewhere, at some time, a TSA cop might pull an Arab or South Asian out of a line at an airport unfairly and talk to them for five minutes.

Note: We're not talking about training security personnel to racially profile passengers. Quite the opposite. The ACLU's problem is with training officers not to racially profile if that training nonetheless gives them enough autonomy so that it's theoretically possible to take race into account.

What is so infuriating about this is that the ACLU favors policies which discriminate against all sorts of people - old people, women, children and others who, under random searches and other idiotic numerical formulas, are pulled aside for literally no reason at all.

All of this is happening against a backdrop of a war on terror in which roughly 99 percent of jihadi terrorists are of either Middle Eastern or South Asian descent and 100 percent of them are Muslim.

Critics of racial profiling say that it wouldn't have stopped Richard Reid (the shoe bomber) or Timothy McVeigh (the Oklahoma City bomber). This is a red herring. Nobody ever proposed that race should be the only factor, or even the most important factor. But why can't it be one of those 30-plus factors? The Brits who foiled this most recent plot were allowed to take race into account. Was that too high a price to pay for thwarting mass murder?

The terrorists we're looking for are overwhelmingly young, male Muslims from places like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Why is it morally superior to inconvenience old Mormon women of Swedish descent - for no reason at all - as much as young men from Pakistan?

Two alleged members of the British liquid explosives plot were young men of British descent who converted to Islam, and one was a woman with a child. Only a fool would advocate a system that, as a rule, deliberately excludes such people from scrutiny. But isn't it equally foolish to spend vast sums on machines designed to interpret the facial twitches and sweat glands of millions of passengers out of an irrational phobia of racial profiling?

Ron Suskind's new book, "The One Percent Doctrine," explores Dick Cheney's view that if there's a 1 percent chance terrorists might detonate a nuclear bomb in an American city, the government must act as if there's a 100 percent chance. Despite the guffawing this elicited from administration critics, it strikes me as eminently sensible. (If there were a 1 percent chance the snake in your back yard would kill your child, wouldn't 1 percent equal 100 percent for you, too?) The ACLU's self-indulgent position, meanwhile, seems to be that if there's a 1 percent chance a cop will be a racist, we must act as if it's a 100 percent chance. And that means humans can't ever be trusted.

Humans can't be trusted
but computers CAN? In what universe? Surely not this one. They go down all the time/stop working or even do 'really strange' things when they get viruses/worms/other things.

At least with a human, if s/he is 'infected' they have the capacity to do the right thing anyway. Fear of lawsuits do that to many otherwise raving bigots.

Personally, I'm glad to see the UK is profiling. I hope it works and spreads to other Western societies that wish to keep their citizens alive.

What the hell is wrong with...
... racially profiling? Norman "Brain-Dead" Minetta is gone. Terrs generally fit the profile of swarthy Middle-Eastern-looking men of the 17-35 age range.

So give Ahmed a pass, while you make Granny Olga Svendsen strip down to her Fruit-of-the-Looms.

Am I in another universe here? Who stole the America of pragmatitism and can-do attitude and substituted this universe I find myself in, where the laws of physics are reversed and tails wag dogs?

Machines vs. Humans
In reply to the eminently sensible posts of Ms. Conservatives (whose posts can be depended on for common sense!) and others: of course, human screening makes more sense than using machines, but as long as the ACLU is allowed to determine policy, then we will be stuck using machines or probably more commonly, we will not be allowed to have as many sensible humans to profile for the one's who are more likely to cause the terror. I suspect we are now going through (another) phase where whoever makes the rules are reacting to the latest threat(s) but in time, the current (latest) threat will subside and things will settle back down to continuing to profile persons who represent no possibilty of a threat. I have not traveled by air since 9/11 but it all seems like a game now and will continue to be that way as long as the ACLU reigns.

Anti Christian Litigation Union
These ACLU nut-cases will never be happy no matter what we do. The only thing they will ever accept from America is unconditional surrender to our enemies.

Yeah, go ahead and write this stupid screening software; but guess what? The ACLU will still find a reason to sue over it. After all, the software engineers are probably racists, and it will be reflected in the logic of their algorithms.....

better yet - use name profiling
A very easy and possibly 100% way to profile would be by profiling of names and putting these names on a "question and search" list or "no fly list". These names would include (among others) all Muslim names like: Muhammed, Osama, Ahmed, Hussain, Waseem, Abdullah, Waheed, etc.. Even second generation British born Muslims would never change their names to Johnny or Mary. If the ACLU fights this tactic, just have everyone who boards a plane eat a slice of pork.

Fortune Tellers could help
Back in my younger days I dated a Gypsy and spent a lot of time talking to his mother who had been raised in the old ways. She explained to me that Gypsy children in the old days and many still today are taught from babyhood to read body language to a degree that allows them to reap the reward of both fortune telling and card-sharping,detecting vulnerable people and spotting undercover cops.

My own neighbourhood is seething with Fortune Tellers, many of whom are opportunists but some of whom are likely trained in this way. Couldn't the government put out a call to the Gypsies for people who know these things and could train TSA employees? Or for those who could pass the background tests, give them jobs?

Ain't it funny?
Ain't it funny that the very people that take race into account for hiring, promotion, college acceptances, and the awarding of business contracts get so squeamish about race being used to conduct searches at airports? It seems that the rabidly race conscious left would be all for this, as they obviously believe that race should be a factor in all other aspects of life, wouldn't you think?

profiling
If race and ethnicity can be one factor used to admit students to liberal universities, why can't it be part of a formula for searches at airports?

All great post so far.
BrianR..You stole my thunder! I was going to say that!
Audir10.. Your Fortune Teller bit made me burst out laughing!
Flagwaver ..right on!

Now we can all expect the usual Liberal screaming to appear.

IF THE ACLU
Supports an idea, it's a sure bet that it is anti-American. Terrorist and those who support them should have absolutely no rights granted to them in the United States. So called Americans who our concerned that the rights of possible terrorist are being violated can board the nearest ship that will happily take those who are offended back to the part of the world of their choice.
Heads Need To Roll LLC

Profiling
Let's stop arguing about this. Let's just have two different ways of going about our lives. One set of airlines that screen by any means necessary and another that follows ACLU guidelines.I know which airline I will be flying and I thing that I know which one Norman Siegel will use as well.

LET'S START WITH ARAB MALES, AGES 17-40
PROFILE...God gave us our eyes and brains for a reason. They are the way we humans have collected information and protected ourselves from day-one. Those who failed to use their eyes and brains weren't around very long. Would you walk to your mailbox with your eyes shut and brain closed? So then why would anyone plan to fly in a plane under those very same conditions?

We are in a battle field not of our choosing, engaged in a life or death struggle. Do we defend ourselves by closing our eyes and brains?

PROFILE!

Another thought
Which would also speed up the lines at the airport: issue every passenger a Glock, to be returned at the other end.

I don't think many terrs are going to try anything if they're sure 200 plus people are going to draw down on them if they do.

Two tiny, tiny quibbles
"Critics of racial profiling say that it wouldn't have stopped Richard Reid (the shoe bomber)"

Profiling for religion, however, would have.

"or Timothy McVeigh (the Oklahoma City bomber)."

You might want to double-check this w/ Jayna Davis.

Libs may have a conflict of interest
This is a very good article by Jonah Goldberg.

Here's the rub. Imagine that you are a hypocritical, anti-American, hate filled socialist liberal (ah, but I repeat myself!) Now imagine you are pulled aside at an airport and ask some security questions such as:

Do you wish to destroy Americans?

Do you hate America and believe that its people are hopeless fools?

Would you like to kill the president?

Do you support the total destruction of Israel (for flights to Tel Aviv)?

You see, the liberals (particularly the ACLU) would be exposed as security risks and barred from air travel.

Because air travel is among the constitution rights (oh, it isn't?), this will allow a cadre of lawyers a lifetime of litigious welfare.

Actually, the windfall for lawyers might actually carry the day for this concept – how many lawyers get to vote on the new security questions and procedures? How many travellers? Airline employees?

I can just see now...
...on one side of the security table is the airline employee and a lawyer, on the other side is the passenger and an aclu lawyer. Both negotiating the terms of the searches for each and every single passenger.

Flagwaver, excellent insight. Affirmitive action for white and black Christians.

Talk shows playing both sides
This just makes me furious what all that the airlines are doing. It is unconfortable enough riding on the airlines and now they are making it even more unconfortable. Colleting my toothpaste will not make the country safer. Stop illegal immegration and start profiling. I am sick of talk shows trying to play both sides. Anyone who actually follows the so called religion of peace should be out there killing innocent people. Wake up and understand this. The talk shows should be showing how it is false and in fact evil. The fruit of a false religion is always something bad, though the particulars vary of course.

A fighting chance
That's all the ACLU is asking for, for Muslim terrorists.

common sense
It's pretty sad when we have to state the obvious, and sadder still that this country has gone so insane that stating it doesn't change anything. We just go on being ridicules.

GOOD POSTS EVERYONE
My family was in this country almost 100 years BEFORE it became the United States. We have fought in every war, campaign, police action and conflict this great nation has been involved in since. Including the current war on terror.

It is our sense of self-preservation and the American public's willingness to fight anyone that dare attack us that has kept us free. Sad to say though, there are far to many in Washington, and in the general populace, that have forgotten this. They have gotten fat, complacent, never had to fight, had it easy all their lives. They have forgotten where they come from.

I agree with catattack: Every airport security checkpoint should have a cooler full of fat, greasy ham sandwiches. You eat one, you go that way. You don't, you get stripped searched. Your baggage gets torn apart. You get every bodily orifice probed. Especially if you are a Muslim male between the ages of 17 and 40.

celtic-dragon: An oldie but goodie. People need to be reminded of these facts every so often.

g-man: For your comment to show you must "post your comment" then go read another article or something. You have to get off the page you are on. It will show later when you come back to the article.

conservative goddess: Have you read any of Dr. Mike Adams articles? He also knows how things are in colleges these days.
