There Was an August Chamber Who Swallowed a Fly

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Remember the children's song about the old lady who swallowed a fly? We don't know why she swallowed the fly, but the poor woman begins consuming more and more to address the fear that she'll die for swallowing the fly.

She does die, eventually, after swallowing a spider to catch the fly, a bird to catch the spider, a cat to catch the bird, a dog to catch the cat, etc., till she gets a horse.

Children laugh at the delightful absurdity. But the lesson of the old woman is instructive. Don't swallow something you shouldn't, and if you do, don't swallow something else you shouldn't and think it'll help. Especially if it's something even bigger.

Would that the Senate understood that lesson as they grapple with the issue of illegal immigration.

From reports, the Senate amnesty plan is attempting to address the problems of the coming Social Security crisis, the surge in illegal immigration since the last amnesty (or amnesties), and the labor crisis (i.e., the "Americans won't work those jobs" problem).

Just as the old lady wasn't content to digest the fly (let alone take an emetic) but rather chose to repeat her folly on an increasingly larger scale, the Senate is not about to deal with the underlying causes of those problems, but make them worse.

Lawmakers long ago swallowed the flies of the Social Security Ponzi scheme, the minimum wage, numerous welfare programs, and previous amnesties of illegal aliens. These applied disincentives to poor Americans to work, reduced the number of potential jobs employers could offer (legally), priced the least skilled American workers out of the job market, reduced the cost and stigma of not working, and grew generations of Americans increasingly reliant on the government to care for them, even as the inevitable Social Security shortfall draws nearer.

Furthermore, it dangled more and more incentives to people in poorer nations south of our borders to sneak in. They weighed the benefits of more employment opportunities and more government handouts against the reduced risk of being deported and greater likelihood of being able to stick it out till the next amnesty rolls around. One cannot blame the border-crossers for leaving extreme poverty to come here.

And it's true, America is a nation of immigrants. It has not always been, however, a nation of entitlements. Proponents of the Senate amnesty plan – including the president – may find it politically expedient to insinuate ignorance, racism, and worse on the part of people who oppose it, but were they to condescend to listen to Americans who find the idea outrageous, they would find that concerns over national security and a vastly expanding welfare state are at the fore.

In this post-September 11 climate, the national-security concerns speak for themselves. Regarding the latter, the Heritage Foundation's Robert Rector projects that this amnesty plan could cost the U.S. $50 billion annually and would result in "the largest expansion of the welfare state in 35 years." As Rector showed, immigrants were once less likely to be on welfare than native-born Americans, but now they are more 50 percent more likely, and their likelihood of being on welfare grows the longer they live in America.

Americans by and large are not going to complain about people coming here who embrace the traditional American values of hard work, freedom from government meddling, and individual rights. But the prospect of rewarding 10 million illegal immigrants – people whose first act in this country was disrespect for its laws and sovereignty – with all those welfare benefits positively alarms them.

At their core, Americans still cleave to the ideal of America as a land of opportunity, beckoning to those around the world yearning to breathe free. This is the legacy they wish to pass on to future generations of Americans, no matter from where their ancestors hail. What it means to be an American has always been an inherited ideal rather than a genetic trait, and it is this ideal that is ultimately at stake. A rapidly growing graft of citizens whose experience with what it means to be an American is to have fellow citizens on the hook for your food, housing, education, medical care, and the same for your parents is going to have a positively Marxist take on the American ideal.

That is the dish set before Senate now with this amnesty bill. We don't know why they've already dined on so many other bad ideas. But this one's worse, it's bigger, and it doesn't address past follies, it outdoes them. Away with it.

What?
Could someone please explain the title to me?

JOMAMA
The second paragraph explains the title of the article.
It's a really funny poem about a woman who accidentally swallowed a fly.
Then she gobbled up a spider to catch the fly.
Then, worried about the spider, she swallowed a bird.
Then, worried about the bird she swallowed, she swallowed a cat >>>>
And on and on.
Sure, it's ridiculous - but that's the point.
Just like our government programs!

Flies on the Wall & in the Air
After a lifetime of scientific testing, I've found that swallowing large numbers of flies does nothing to improve human aerodynamics. Remember that point.

On my almost-famous blog (click on name above) I have a piece today on why Rudy Giuliani is a lock for the Republican nomination. This is a better analysis than you're going to read anywhere else, especially the odious MSM. As always, your comments are welcome. Have a great weekend!

(always controversial, always fun)

Skunkworks
I believe the confusion Jomama is experiencing is the one I shared, at first. I scratched my head for a few minutes over who this "August Chamber" was. It finally dawned on me that "August" was neither a name nor a month, but an adjective refering to the honor of the "Chamber" that is our Senate. I can only assume the dripping sarcasm intended. Certainly the behavior of our legislators of late has done nothing to earn them such an honorific.

Typo corrected
I was confused because I had no idea what an "August Chamer" (sic)was. I do know what the "August Chamber" is. The typo has been corrected since yesterday.

Thanks,
jb

Insanity
If insanity is defined as doing the same thing time after time, but expecting a different result, then our elected politicians inside the beltway are completely bonkers, along with our lame duck prez.

No one has taken a legitimate poll of the American people regarding people entering this country illegally. Some of the polls that have been taken are asked in the vein of "Do you favor immigration of hard working people doing the work Americans refuse to do?" instead of the more realistic question "Do you favor people entering this country illegally?"

The term "illegal immigration" is now almost universal in the media and even amongst conservative bloggers. "Illegal immigration" is an oxymoron. If these illegals wanted citizenship, they would have applied for it before they came here.

They no more want US citizenship than I want Nigerian citizenship. They want free health care and other social welfare benefits. They do not want to pay taxes that legal immigrants pay. If these illegals become citizens, they will also have to assume the responsibilities of citizenship, and that's the last thing they want.

Illegals have a free ride now. The only way to get them to turn around and go home is for the USA to shut down the ride.

Great article
I love the analogy to the old lady and the fly song. Let's spit the fly back out by getting rid of all the social welfare programs. Those who are truly needy can go to their local churches, food pantries, and shelters for help. If there is a sudden influx of truly needy folks, I have no doubt that those of us who are concerned and compassionate citizens will step up and help out our neighbors in need without having to print any food stamps or pay any government employees to hand them out. And to any of you who are going to reply by citing what a low percentage of our tax bill actually goes to these programs, let me assure you that it is not the money so much that bothers me as the message that it sends. The longer we continue to instill in our children the Marxist American ideal that Jon describes in this article the further away we get from the America ideal that made this country great.

Perfectly logical
Sanders' logic is impeccable. Unfortunately, he would not be writing this article if logic was an effective tool for influencing the Senate.

Excellent article!
But now i can't get the nursery ryhme out of my head!...i don't no why she swallowed the fly---perhaps she'll die..

She swallowed
a horse, She's dead of course

Rule of Law? Or Not

Actively, consistently, continuously enforcing existing laws will send the message that we are serious about our laws. Changing them to accomodate people breaking them sends the opposite message. And not just to those already here. Millions are waiting to see which tack we take. Amnesty will set off a stampede like we have not seen before. Enforcement will start the flow in the other direction as the jobs and benefits dry up. Those pushing for amnesty are for surrendering to the demands of the illegal aliens and their employers, abandoning the rule of law and surrendering our sovereignty. We should not change the laws to suit those breaking them.
