Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

If you Google "Caroline Kennedy Qualified," you'll come up with hundreds of thousands of websites. Site after site asks, "Is Caroline Kennedy Qualified?" -- to hold Hillary Clinton's Senate seat, that is.

New York Republican congressman Peter King, who wants that seat for himself, says there is "no evidence she's qualified." New York Democratic congressman Gary Ackerman agrees: "She has name recognition, but so does J.Lo."

Zillions of people may rant that Caroline Kennedy lacks what it takes to be a senator, but I think she's qualified.

After all, what does a senator do?

In theory senators represent the people of the state that sent them to Washington. It's not at all clear what that means. It has something to do with serving the interests of those people rather than the senator's own interests. But it's long been debated whether a representative should do what constituents want or what the representative thinks they should want. Either way we have a problem. New York has 19 million people. We don't have the same interests, and we rarely want the same things. People are diverse.

What's a representative to do? If some in the state want a subsidy for their businesses or farms, and others object, how can the senator serve both groups? Polling is no help, because the minority would be unrepresented.

The idea of a senator truly representing the interests of 19 million people is ridiculous. (This holds for Wyoming's half-million as well.) We pretend that he or she can do it, but no one really believes it. It's just a game we play. The reality is something else.

Caroline Kennedy may indeed be unqualified to be a U.S. senator if she is judged by the job's theoretical duties. But so is everyone else.

On the other hand, she is qualified to perform the actual duties of a senator. Let's look at those:

Senators bloviate on anything and everything, regardless of whether they know what they are talking about. This is an important part of the job. Senators must sound as though they know how to create jobs, what kind of energy the United States should use, how to make health care affordable, how to plan education for 75 million unique children, and so on. They don't have to actually know how to do these things. They just have to sound as though they know. I know very little about Caroline Kennedy, but I'm sure she's capable of making pronouncements about how progressive polices will save the world.

Another thing senators do is cast votes to spend other people's money. Caroline Kennedy should be very good at that. She grew up in a wealthy family. Her stepfather was one of the richest men in the world. Now she's married to a wealthy businessman. She's had lots of practice spending other people's money. She'd be good at it.

All this is not to say the job of a senator is easy. Senators do have to figure out which interest groups to reward with subsidies, special tax breaks and pork in order to assure reelection. But with a little work, that's probably not hard to learn.

So by the standard of the actual duties of a U.S. senator, Caroline Kennedy is eminently qualified.

But, of course, so is virtually everyone else.

As per the U.S. Constitution, Yes!
Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution sets three qualifications for senators: 1) each senator must be at least 30 years old, 2) must have been a citizen of the United States for at least the past nine years, and 3) must be (at the time of the election) an inhabitant of the state they seek to represent. The age and citizenship qualifications for senators are more stringent than those for representatives.
Princess Kenneddy meets all of the qualifications.
These requirements are even stricter than those of say Taco Bell, and like Taco Bell, neither of them calls for the user to be more than barely conversant in English.

Right On Target John
Though I am no fan of the Kennedy clan, especially the kicked out of school, drunken, probable murderer, these politicians make it sound like they are brain surgeons. Please! If Maxine Waters or Sheila Jackson Lee can be part of this group of 535, well it just cannot be all that illustrious a group. If an ex Klan leader can be the leader of the Senate, surely this woman is qualified. Heck, her own uncle is one of the most disreputable characters in the country who should just be getting out of jail, yet he is treated like he is the most important member of the Senate. Surely she must be a better person than her uncle! And don't get me started on the utterly horrible woman she'd be replacing. Did Caroline stay with an abusive husband yet claim to be a feminist icon? Did Caroline steal 1000 FBI files on her political enemies? Did Caroline send threatening investigators after women who's only crime was to sleep with (or get raped by) her sleezy husband?

Oh yeah John, that is one special club. Only the best and brightest 535 are sent there. Yikes!

By the Way
Is any reporter with any guts going to ask why Princess Caroline suddenly dropped the "Schlossberg" (sp?) from her name. Too Jewish sounding for those open minded NY liberals?

Forget qualifications.
The question is; is she entitled?

Let her run in two years. Build a base with her wit, personability and range of knowledge; if this there be any to be known.

If she can bring out the cadres and win over more with her "shoeshine and a smile" delivery, coupled with something more impressive than her dismal public outings to date then she can win the seat as would any other contender for a full term.

As she appears to be all fluff and little stuff, this appears her only course to true political ascension.

I believe she is out of the running for this cycle.

Hillary's Seat
Well, someone has to hold Hillary's seat. Bill Clinton doesn't want to. It takes two hands to handle a whopper!

Senate
Senators are not supposed to represent any of the people of a state. They're supposed to represent the interests of the state as a whole.

Repeal the 17th Amendment.

Senate
Wolfpat's dead on. Therein lies the whole rub. Under the 17th Amendment we essentially have two houses of representatives...with the attendant problems of doling out largess to the evergrowing dependent class and nonstop reelectioneering. As he said...repeal it! That way a senator can be fired on the spot if his self-serving interests get too far afield of his state's interests. Indirectly, his politics become far more local. He serves at the pleasure of his state.

Spew Alert
Phil of VA,
That "Hillary's seat" smack was too funny.

I understand one group vehemently opposed to Caroline's appointment is the New York 'Pants Suit' industry. They want another hermaphrodite to replace the hildebeast.

She fails the "sounds like
she knows" test. At least according to her various interviews.

Phil
If she had to haul A$$, she would have to make 2 trips.

It's hard to argue with that logic
Personally, if I never see another Kennedy, Clinton, Bush, Jackson, Biden, or any other hereitary politician it will be too soon but it's NY.

New York is famous for electing the unqualified, dishonest, socialist elite.

lemonfemale
Yes, but it appears she aces the "It's like, you know" test. About once every 4 seconds.

I agree
You know, I, you know, agree. You know.

Today's Senate is not ......
Today’s Senate is not what was envisioned or intended when our founding fathers wrote & adopted our Constitution! Today they are a bumbling bunch of crooked bozos. Dumb? No! Crooked? Yes. I am no fan of the Kennedys for many good reasons, which all of us know & most of will admit; of course excluding the Kennedy worshipers & most far left liberals! However, I cannot see why she is any worse than the current crop of Senate bozos! I do not care what New York does with its Senator because it really will have no impact on our disfunction, inept federal goverment!

Damn. I'm *not* qualified.
--
I meet the age and residency requirements in the U.S. Constitution, but no wealthy family, no "practice spending other people's noney."

As a family doc, I've got plenty of experience at telling people how to take their meds, quit smoking, and tighten up their diets, but I've never been able to force 'em at gunpoint to do my bidding.

Which is what government does.

Moreover, I'm not a lawyer. Doesn't that automatically disqualify any American from taking a seat in the Congress?

Excellent comment.

Stossel's statement that: "I'm sure she's capable of making pronouncements about how progressive polices will save the world."

Is certainly in doubt after hearing Caroline speak.

new yorkers DESERVE caroline

New Yorkers should have no problem with caroline. They have made it a habit of electing senators with no qualifications whatsoever.

After all, they did elect hillary clinton, didn't they? (I think they re-elected her as well.)

99 other senators
tell me she couldn't be any worse. The "qualified" mantra is a ruse. If the senate was held to the same standard they are trying to hold the CEO's of the auto companies then none of them would be qualified, IMHO.
Caroline is certainly in the spotlight because of her family. So what? If she were Joe the Plumber, who I hear is considering a race for a congressional seat, she'd still be qualified.
The mantra is a ruse.
I really expect nothing noteworthy to come from her but that's no reason to go ballistic over her pending coronation.

Caroline's Qualifications
As someone already said the job of an elected representative or senator is do what is best for their state AND COUNTRY. Not what pleases the people.
2nd The question is not is she qualified? The question should be is she the best qualified person for the job. I think not.

Qualified? of course
If a < 1 term senator is qualified to lead the most powerful nation on earth, she is qualified to be a senator.

You Can Do Better
John Stossel: This is the worst column of yours that I've read. Stop making light of a serious matter. Princess Caroline only meets the Constitutional requirements for a senator. There are taxi drivers who meet that and some who have more mastery of the English language than she has demonstrated; uum, you know.

Not!!!
Caroline Kennedy cannot bloviate...she cannot speak in public...she is not qualified under your terms...she has an elitest attitude...i.e. asking NYT reporters if they were reporting for a woman's magazine...that was snobbery... she is not articulate...she ums and "you knows" worse than a teenager...NO she is not qualified...and just having the Kennedy should not be a given that she should be nominated. txpoljldy

Kennedy
I am wondering where the NAACP is on this one? How come they are not screaming affirmative action? How come they are not screaming "another white woman gets a position by her being white??" And where is the left who hates political ascendency due to heritage and class??? Silent aren't they? Where is the left and its appropriate outrage that another rich white person gets a political seat because of their name and money??

It's Up the People of New York
David Paterson is in no position to appoint anyone who will not meet with the approval of the people of New York unless he has already decided to forgo running for re-election in less than two years. As such, it is up to the people of New York to decide whether they wish to be represented in the Senate by a, dim wit, air-head celebrity, and to make him aware of their decision. The universe tends to unfold as it should.

Call me a Feminazi, but . . .
Is it really necessary to ridicule Caroline Kennedy's appearance? I can think of plenty of males in the public eye that are not attractive (e.g. Blago) and no one talks about how they look (I know I just contradicted myself, but I think you get the picture).

Caroline Schlossberg is qualified
Given the low bar of qualification for the office of leader of the free world that currently exists, it is difficult to imagine that anyone would be unqualified to serve as a mere senator.

It is astounding that the same media that refused to acknowledge Obama's utter lack of qualification for the presidency would now quibble over poor Caroline's quest for relevancy.

Not just a member:
But she and Andrew "Evil Eyes" Cuomo are Pres. and Veep of the Lucky Sperm Club trumpeting their DNA like aristocrats of old proclaiming their lineage and right of blood succession.

SJ Doc
writes, "Moreover, I'm not a lawyer. Doesn't that automatically disqualify any American from taking a seat in the Congress?"

I am pretty sure it does. One of our senators is a doctor. He still practices medicine occasionally when home to keep up his skills since he plans to continue practicing medicine when finished serving. The senate rules forbid this and he has been unmercifully persecuted even though he accepts no money for it while a member of the senate. Of course, this is so farfetched an attempt to browbeat someone into subservience it is ridiculous.

The only rationale that makes sense is they hate him for not being a lawyer. A man with principles is not welcome in the U.S. Senate. Lawyers, on the other hand, are taught that such quaint notions are irrelevant. Truth does not matter. The only thing that matters is what you can prove, or convince a jury to believe regardless of facts. An absolute prerequisite to being in our modern senate. Whoever has rhetoric that convinces the larger mob wins. We could save a lot of money by eliminating elections and simply assigning new graduates of Harvard and Yale states to pretend to represent and we would have the same thing we have now.

Lowering of Standards.

Once again we see Liberals lowering standards.

Calm down
Why such an uproar and why blame it on the liberals? Good Lord, she's not endorsed by every liberal out there. She's thrown her name in the hat - that's it. It's up to the governor, not the conservative or liberal media to decide.

Subject: Lowering of Standards.
Oh, and I guess Rove and Cheney and those who voted Bush in office (not once, but twice)didn't lower standards? McCain picked a VP based on "star power", to quote Pat Buchanan. Talk about lowering standards. He should have picked Jindal - he'd probably be president now. I would have voted for him, just to get Jindal in there.

Why do we care about Caroline Kennedy
one way or another? She's a liberal Dem, just like anyone else who would be chosen.

Let's worry about the real issues, the wars, economy.

Nobless Oblige
The irony is just overwhelming. Obama, a black man, chooses Caroline Kennedy for his VP-vetting campaign staff. Perhaps he didn't know Caroline is the daughter of a president who refused to be photographed shaking hands with Sammy Davis, Jr., in the White House. I give credit to Jackie, her mother, because evidently she was so upset that she left them both and went upstairs to bed.

I dunno. Give me the uptight WASP Bushes over the so-called tolerant liberal Democrats every day. The WASPs don't have the charisma of the Kennedys or the Obamas but they do seem to have more class.

Isn't it odd though that Caroline went to the best schools, enjoyed fabulous wealth and privileges all her life, and consorted with the elite crowd...but when she speaks she talks like an Orange County teenager. Even Sarah Palin, who rose to the top using her natural talents, communicates better than Caroline.

Oh, the poor liberals, they have the scion of a dynasty who is rich, attractive, but can't express herself. Never mind, it doesn't matter. After all she is a Kennedy!

Senator Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg
Of course she's qualified. She has the name. She has money. She has fame. What more does she need? You know?

Besides,if only qualified congresspeople were allowed they could caucus in a phone booth!!

like everybody
If Caroline Kennedy wants to be a senator, she should have to buy the Senate seat... just like everybody else!

none
Well said. The silence from those groups is deafening.

Happy new year
Ugh, I am going to vomit.

jeffersonion
What Standards?

Kennedy wold fit right in
Over 50 Senators got most of their wealth from other people that would include McCain and Clinton. So how is Kennedy different?

Cool!
It never occurred to me that the job was that easy. Maybe *I* should run!

Two words...
TERM LIMITS

Why we left England!!!
Republic, Checks and Balances, and the Democratic Process...these are reasons our nation is to great.

Kennedy's lack of qualifications concern me, but not as much as the idea that she's entitled to lead us because of her family lineage.

America is a Republic NOT a MONARCY!!!

Chloe

The reason why people worry about Kennedy is because she is a Liberal.

Liberals get us into wars. If Bill Clinton would have arrested Bin Laden when he could have we would not have had a second attack on the world trade center which lead to us going into Iraq and Afganistan.

Liberals in the Senate have a long history of weakening the CIA and FBI which gathers the intelligence.

Liberals have driven up the cost of housing which led to the collasped housing bubble. But the prices will still end up higher than they should be hurting young people trying to buy a first home.

Liberals have driven up the cost of higher education with programs that were supposed to help pay for education.

Federal funding for primary education over the past 50 years has resulted in 50% drop out rates, poor performance and loss of competative edge in the world.

We are now just learning that the Farm Bill that we ram-rodded through congress by Tom Daschle when he was a senator has driven up the cost of food, resulted in people not even engaged in farming getting Federal money.

Obama has now put this failure in charge of Healthcare reform.

So yes people should worry anytime a Liberal goes to congress.

Liberals have driven up the cost of Healthcare over the past 50 years which has now caused a healthcare crisis.

Tax and Spend
Ask not what the standing army, federal camp followers; agent and agencies can do for you.

Ask what more can you do for the standing army, federal camp followers, agent and agencies?

We don't have royalty
I can't answer why libs had such a gut-level objection to Sarah Palin(something about her not having an Ivy League degree and not knowing her arugula from her derriere?)but I can tell you that conservatives (and lots of libs, too) have a gut-level objection to anointing Carolyn Kennedy as a United States Senator.

She has never run for any office, so why the sudden need to serve? Could it be that this time she doesn't have to exert herself at all? She fully expects this powerful position to be hers based on her daddy's name...no other reason. She seems dismayed that people actually have objections to her.

She'll be crowned Senator because the dems want her...but it will only undermine obama's so-called mandate.

This many old style crony dems do not spell "Change."

Caroline's ya know
Please: go easy on Caroline. At least she didn't say: "ya know..ya know, ya know, ya know, etc. etc. etc.
Listen closely to some of the folks being interviewed on national TV. I once kept count of a seemingly intelligent young man who repeatedly spouted off and added to nearly every spoken sentence "Ya know?"....Fifteen times by my count. It was inspirational, ya know?/

Caroline qualified?
John Stossel's correct to point out Caroline, with her law degree, is about as qualified as any Senator who's presently in office.

Why isn't she qualified? After all, the basic qualification of politicans is they're adept at the manipulation of people. If Caroline proves adept at manipulating people, she'll be rewarded by election. If she isn't adept at manipulation, she'll lose the office to the voter.

Because I'm not a New Yorker, I don't much care if she's appointed to the office or not.

Hitchhiker #29
I so admire your Senator Coburn - you should be very proud to have him represent your state. I have contacted his office in the past to offer my personal thanks since contacting my own senators does absolutely no good!

Re: lawyers in the federal government - how many of us remember the hundreds of "I don't recall" comments made by Hillary Rodham Clinton during the congressional investigations into the various Clinton messes.

My suggestion: A law degree would automatically DISQUALIFY an individual as a candidate for either Senate or House!!!

Suggestion #2: TERM LIMITS - everyone currently in office MUST leave when their current term expires and a maximum of two terms in a lifetime. This should get rid of the professional politician who enters office with little in the bank and exits with millions!

Amazing how the media
who couldn't leave Sarah Palin alone for one second, whether it was clothes, appearance or family, looks right past Caroline Schlossberg's lack of style and grace, high school hairdo, and horrible manner of speaking - oh yes, she is qualified! After all her maiden name is ALL that counts! I wonder how her husband feels about all this...we haven't seen hide nor hair of him since all the hoobah began - interesting fact in itself!

Princess Caroline
Most of the comments on this subject seem to be coming from non-NYkers.

This is one upstate NYer that has no desire to see CK as my U.S. Senator. For one thing, two Solons from NYC leaves upstate under represented as it is now. This is flyover country for Sen's Schumer and Clinton. They only come up here during elections and emergencies. Emergencies allow them to get in a quick sound bite and photo op and then return to NYC in time for dinner. CK is another NYC socialite and clebrity and will be not different. Besides, she knows diddly squat about the economic factors affecting upstate let alone how to influence them.

I much prefer that Gov. Patterson appoint someone with demonstrated superior performance in elected office.

Can't Wait, ya know

I can't wait, ya know, for Saturday Night Live to do a skit on, ya know, that Kennedy woman. Ya know?

I hope they cover her work in,,, ya know, public education, where she worked very hard on English Education, ya know?

What representation?
Where does it say that a senator is obliged to
'represent' any one? That is what Representatives do. New York accrues 29. That is one for every 655000 or so. Does Schumer 'represent' the state or the Democratic party? Now you understand.
H. Clinton did more for NY than Schumer.
A few senators look out for their people but most try to keep a 'big picture' viewpoint.
C K is a true threat to many in the Dem party because she is a bonafide idealist and not apolitician. She will not play along to get along. She may very well embarrass some people.
Knowing this, CK is so very not qualified to be a Senator from NY. OR is she?

Forgotten Duties
I really like John Stossel's columns but in this instance he started on the wrong foot. A U.S. Senator does not represent the people of their state, rather a Senator is "supposed" to represent the interests OF the STATE. This became muddied when the election of Senators was changed to allow popular voting. The Senate has lost track of its actual purpose which was to keep the federal government from taking rights that belonged to the several states...now and aid and abet the perversion of the Constitution. what a shame!

SJdoc is right on
A good friend's son was dead set on going to Law school even tho he had two College Degrees and a FINE job.. The Father summed up his displeasure with words to this effect: "Son U have always been a fine a musician, excelling in almost any instrument..So iinstead of becoming a Lawyer why not a more honorable profession such as playing Piano in a C@t House..??" Sonny Boy went onto Law School!!HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Caroline Kennedy surpassed by Palin
From the NY Times transcript ofthe CK recent interview:

"NC: Do you plan to vote for the mayor in 2009?

CK: I plan to vote for the Democrat.

DH: What if he doesn’t get on the Democratic line?

CK: I plan to vote for the Democrat..."

Robotic voting. Lack of thinking "outside the box".

Still, she (and her late brother) have acted with better public decorum than several other Kennedys (google Ted Kennedy and the woman who slowly died in his car at Chappaquiddick - Mary Jo Kopechne)

Betcha - tho - she couldn't run a state or even rise to governorship if she didn't have a famous name & connections. You betcha!

She's breathing, after all.
It's hard to argue that Caroline Kennedy is not 'qualified' to be a US Senator in a nation which might elect an Al Franken.

DNC "Party of the People"
I find her arrogance difficult to take. I have heard both her and her cousin "Kerry" remark that 'it is not up to the people of NYS, but Gov. Patterson'. It is of course, legally, true that Patterson can 'chose' the replacement for Hillary. I would prefer a quick election, but that withstanding, I would think that Miss Caroline would be more deferential to the people of this state and their right to be represented.

When one of their strategists commnented on Fox that 'there was no comparison between Sara Palin and Caroline Kennedy, Caroline went to Harvard" I was truly stunned. One would wonder whether they have a 'standard' of where a 'legitimate' candidate should have been educated - - Harvard? Yale, Skidmore, Just the ivies? Should candidates have to have gone to a high level prep school? Maybe only those with a Masters degree should vote? I could go on and on....after all Lincoln, who seems to be in the Democrat mantra this week, had about 2 years of 'formal' education as a boy.

I guess this is just another "party of the People moment" for the Democrats.
