Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

"Instead of idly debating the precise extent of global warming, ... we need to deal with the central facts of rising temperatures, rising waters, and all the endless troubles that global warming will bring. We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great. The most relevant question now is whether our own government is equal to the challenge" (http://tinyurl.com/6rt5s9).

With that, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain threw his support -- again -- to a complex government program to reduce carbon emissions. He claims he can do this, without causing economic hardship, by using the power of the free market.

As The Wall Street Journal commented, "His plan is 'market based' insofar as it requires an expensive, invasive government bureaucracy to interfere with the market".

McCain's cap-and-trade system would have a bureaucracy set a limit for CO2 emissions and auction tradable permits to carbon-emitting companies. McCain says the revenue would be "put to good use." Specifically, "We will add to current federal efforts to develop promising technologies. ... We will also establish clear standards in government-funded research, to make sure that funding is effective and focused on the right goals."

We've heard that before. You'd think McCain would have learned that government isn't cut out for this sort of thing.

For all his lip service to markets, there is no getting around the fact that McCain will use force -- that's what government is -- to accomplish his goals. There are only two ways to do things: voluntary or forced. The market is voluntary. No one is ever forced to buy or sell anything.

Cap-and-trade sounds good. Trade is good. But "cap" is force. Government will make arbitrary decisions about how much CO2 will be permitted in a thousand different situations. I can only begin to imagine the bureaucracy that will be required. Will chimney police go to every business and home telling you how much you can emit? Will armed officials from a Department of Global Warming raid your house and jail you if you run your air-conditioner too much? I assume friends of Al Gore will get special dispensation because they are working for the good of the nation.

How much will McCain's plan reduce global temperatures?

He doesn't say -- probably because even the most radical climate-change policies promise no more than a negligible reduction.

As Fred S. Singer, president of the Science & Environmental Policy Project, told the Heartland Institute in 2007, "All these schemes are quite ineffective in reducing the global growth of atmospheric CO2 -- never mind in having any effect on climate. The schemes do have one thing in common: They will damage the U.S. economy and hurt the pocketbooks of every consumer..."

In other words, economic growth will be stifled -- for what?

Roy W. Spencer, a research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and author of "Climate Confusion," says he's "increasingly convinced" that climate change has far more to do with natural phenomena like El Nio and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation than carbon dioxide. "Maybe the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is higher now than it has been in hundreds of thousands of years. So what?" he wrote in a recent article for the National Review.

"Even though there has never been a single scientific paper published that has ruled out natural variability for most of the warming we've seen since 1850, Big Science has managed to convince politicians and much of the public that the science is settled. Apparently, our addition of nine molecules of carbon dioxide to each 100,000 molecules of air over the last 150 years can now be blamed for anything and everything ... Hurricanes, tornadoes, heat waves, floods, glaciers flowing toward the sea ... these used to happen naturally, but no more".

Spencer is one of many scientists who doubt the "consensus" that CO2 will cause a global warming "crisis." But politicians still want to act.McCain's hero is Teddy Roosevelt, a hectoring, activist president. To justify government interference in our lives, it helps to have a crisis. In Islamic extremism, McCain has his foreign affairs crisis. In global warming, he has his domestic crisis.

Global Temperature
I have searched diligently and still have not found the answers to my burning questions:
1. What is the perfect temperature and where should it be measured? In December 1777, General Washington and the troops enjoyed the balmy winter at Valley Forge. Is that the temperature we should be aiming for?
2. If there has been no warming for ten years and cooling is expected for at least the next ten, when do we declare victory?
3. Why are the 32,000 scientists who signed a paper disagreeing with the alarmists being ignored? Are they ignorant or in Big Oil's pocket?
4. With well qualified conservatives available, why have we nominated an idiot to carry the GOP banner?

Primus....

No we're not.

Government's duty to protect citizens
Stossel's attempt at defining a minimum state ought to include the fundamental duty of any government to protect it's citizens. Elevated levels of greenhouse gas in the air is a clear and present threat to the ecosystems and therefore to us.

"Processes that would normally regulate climate are being driven to amplify warming. Such feedbacks, as well as the inertia of the Earth system — and that of our response — make it doubtful that any of the well-intentioned technical or social schemes for carbon dieting will (work). What is needed is a fundamental cure." --Dr James Lovelock

"I'm going to tell you something I probably shouldn't: we may not be able to stop global warming. We need to begin curbing global greenhouse emissions right now, but more than a decade after the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, the world has utterly failed to do so. Unless the geopolitics of global warming change soon, the Hail Mary pass of geoengineering might become our best shot." --Bryan Walsh, Time Magazine, 17 March 2008

dober idiot
you quote Time magazine and expect anyone to take you seriously? Why are you buying into this GW poppycock? Did you watch Al Bore's movie 20 times, or is it just If it's in the Times, it's got to be true!!

To Pseudo-'Realist' . . .
. . . the so-called "scientists" who AGREE with Gore's "global warming" alarmism are in the pockets of the radical environmental extremists (i.e. the eco-terror group Earth Liberation Front, EarthJustice, the National Resources Defense Council, the Audubon Society and so on) as well as the United Nations.

Why expect anything else?
McCain is a politician on a lifelong quest for ultimate power. ANY man of our era who seeks the Oval Office should be greeted with suspicion on that basis alone. And every aspirant to power does his best to contrive a crisis with which to frighten his followers into self-subjugation.

McCain's embrace of Global Warming cultism is the tipping point -- http://www.eternityroad.info/index.php/weblog/single/manda tory_rebellion_motivations_and_inhibitors/ -- that demonstrates that we must discipline the GOP before it abandons Constitutional principles completely.

This is a very insidious article.
Instead of enlightening us it just confuses the matter. I will exemplify with this quote:

"Even though there has never been a single scientific paper published that has ruled out natural variability for most of the warming we've seen since 1850, Big Science has managed to convince politicians and much of the public that the science is settled.”

It seems as if the author believes that there is a contradiction between “settling the science” and not ruling out natural variability. In fact, natural variability is factored into all climate model research. What came out of that research are in fact published papers that show the effects of man on global warming.

The issue is not if natural variability or man causes most of the warming. The issues are
a) if man causes a damaging level of warming,
b) and if anything can be done about it.
The science has been settled for long time concerning (a) – only incremental changes have been made concerning the climate models since the 80’s. Issue (b) though is still not solved. I guess my great grandkids will be the ones to find out.

Some Facts About Global Warming
1. The Earth has been warming and cooling in a natural cycle since its inception 4.5 billion years ago.
2. The greenhouse effect is necessary to sustain life on Earth. (otherwise it would be 30 degrees colder on average)
3. 95% of greenhouse gas is water vapor on which man has only a .001% effect.
4. Water has a much higher specific heat than carbon dioxide. It is unclear how an increase in carbon dioxide could ever cause the effects alarmists claim.
5. About 3% of the greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide, a trivial amount even if doubled. It is not close to doubling.
6. The oceans contain vast amounts of carbon dioxide in various forms. Sun activity heating the Earth releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from the ocean, a much higher risk of high carbon dioxide levels than man causes.
7. Plants consume carbon dioxide. Sea creatures use it to make shells and coral reefs. More plants and coral reefs would be a good thing.
8. Global warming would be preferable to global cooling.

Can't do it
Just one more reason I can't vote for McCain. We are faced with a liberal, a more liberal and a socialist

McCainiac will bring gas to 8 bucks!
The guy won't drill in Alaska. Freeze him out, elect a Libertarian or stay home. I mean, I am reading liberals say gas is cheap now at 4 bucks a pop and we should expect to pay 8 dollars a gallon soon.

Finally they are getting what they want to ruin our way of life -- high fuel prices. Wouldn't let us drill or refine, or use nuclear, and now we are paying the price and soon will be at 8 bucks a gallon if things continue on present trends.

McCain aids and abets them. I am tired of our politicos asking the American people to bend over as they jet wherever they want to go.

See through these clowns and vote them away.

Climbs on the stupid bandwagon
because he wants to. He needs support from SOMEWHERE and ain't getting it here.

Global warming caused by man, the stupidest idea since Global cooling caused by man.

KING LIBERAL
And what is my "party"? I'm a conservative. I don't have a party. Whats your party? McCain shot himself in the foot on this scam. Last straw for me. You idiots can have the "Messiah"We'll see what happens when Obama gets hold of this country. The whole problem here is, rugged individualism , is a foreign concept to the majority of lazy ..sses with their hands out. I'm no Bush fan. And i agree McCain looks worse as far as selling our sovreignty. Global warming is C.O.M.M.U.N.I.S.M. in a green wrapper. Anyone with a brain can see that.

King Lib
"Conservative should wake up and see the pattern that truly is emerging; McCain will be Bush3 complete with caving to the enviromental lobby and endorseing the lifework of Al Gore."

Where have you been? Is there a conservative left on the planet who thinks John McCain is a conservative? Do you actually read the posts on TH?

As for the article, McGore may have his foreign and domestic crisis's but what he doesn't have is my vote.

He's left of Hillary...
The more I hear McCain speak, the more the guy scares me.McCain's cap-and-trade system would have a bureaucracy set a limit for CO2 emissions and auction tradable permits to carbon-emitting companies. McCain says the revenue would be "put to good use.

"Specifically, "We will add to current federal efforts to develop promising technologies. ... We will also establish clear standards in government-funded research, to make sure that funding is effective and focused on the right goals."

That statement could have come out of the mouth of Al Gore or the Dixie Chicks.

The man has lost his mind. Hillary is by far the most acceptable of the big three to me.

Markus
Actually, the real issues are:
a) How much of the data that is being fed to us has been manipulated to make it look like global warming is happening when it isn't?
b) Is it legitimate to call this lying?

By the way, check out this piece by a leftist who doesn't believe in global warming:

Look especially at what he says about peer review.

Global stupidity
We now have three global warming idiots running for preident. Aren't we the lucky one's?

McCain Is for fighting global warming.

Bec
Yes. How lucky. One more bureaucracy, one more increased cost of doing business in the US, and one more reason that even more manufacturing and jobs will move somewhere else. I can't wait to get the governments next notice in the mail that orders me to fill out one more set of forms and comply with one more set of indecipherable laws. Welcome to the US "Service" society.

Wait, Just Think About It For A Moment
A commoner's definition of cap-and-trade. Everyone in the US is assigned a carbon credit of 5. I am willing to reduce my CO2 by 2 so I will trade it to someone else for $38. who ends up using 7. The total potential CO2 between the two of us equals 10. These small numbers might make it easy for some who have trouble with basic logic and math. My 5 less 2 equals 3. His 5 plus my two which are all used equals 7. The 3 plus 7 equals 10 used. There, that is not too hard is it? In the end, there are two results. 1. No CO2 is reduced. 2. I "earned" $38 by "trading" my CO2. If I had gotten $40 instead of the legal $38 for the CO2 credit, jail time from the new US Govmint - Commission for Reducing Air Pollution, acronym is CRAP.

If you want a "Wake up call," watch and listen to the above link. Make your own decisions as to who is actually manipulating the US and the world.

Anybody
who passed high school physics and believes the global warming hype does not deserve to be president.
Climate change ("weather") if and when it can be predicted beyond a couple of weeks, may be able to be established. Re warming, what is the base line? Where is the control? Climate change cycles occur over thousands of years in very small increments. Where is the accurate temperature readings (+-) from thousands of years ago? From even tens of years ago? They don't exist. GW is an unproven hypothesis to make massive social and economic changes based on it is irrational. Its plain and simple a smoke screen for global fascism.

Invest an hhour, get a "Wake Up Call" and then determine just "who" is controlling us. I'll let you make your own decision.

The Danger of Libs...
...is their stupid "do something now" philosophy.

It's too hot, so let's make it colder.
It's too cold, so let's make it hotter.
The rich have too much money, so let's take it away (never mind that the rich provide the jobs).
Oil prices are too high, so let's sue OPEC.

Jeesh. Liberalism truly is a mental disorder!

How is it
How is it that 99 scientists will say that something is happening and there will be one who says that it is not and Conservatives will believe the One. Later on we will find out that the One had is reseach funded by Exxon-Mobil.

It happened in the case of Big Tobacco. Those companies denied to the last any link between smoking and bad health effects and the conservatives of that day where there to back them up.

Global Warming is real. The real debate should on what is the best way to deal with it.

The right can have different legitimate approaches, but to bury you head in the sand will get you nowhere.

Stossel gets 3 stars
not because he isn't right, not because the article isn't well written, but because he is only piling on to many other articles already written.

We already know McLame is a traitor to conservatives, we already know the Republican Party has sold out (outside of a few valiant individuals). In short Stossel, you should pay more attention to other collumnists and get a different topic.

McCain's...
...intellectual credentials are doubtful at best. His imprimatur on the global warming fraud only enhances his reputation as a dolt. We are so lucky that McCain cannot win in November. At least that's something we can all be thankful for.

John Stossel
Great to read a conservative on this site. I was thinking it has gone 100% over to the neo cons

At Least McCain addressed the Issue
even though I don't believe in global warming, it is just another subject to keep us off what this Liberal Congress is up to.

If you want change, then go to http://www.NumbersUSA.com and make your voice heard.

The Senate is going to discuss and vote on this issue today and if you do not call your Senator, McCain, Obama and Clinton as well, then you are part of the problem and it has nothing to do with global warming, it has to do with safety, taxes and our way of life.

Ramifications
Let's say McCain gets in and institutes the idiotic cap and trade mechanism for carbon.

What will industries do?

Will they play this idiotic game?

Of course not! They will flock to other countries costing our country even more jobs.

The idea that there will be meaningful "green" jobs waiting in the wings is pure hallucinogenic fantasy

JMO51:
I know you have been on enough threads concerning so-called global warming to have read many of the comments posted by people who are well-versed on this subject, so I won't bother to repeat their arguments.

Just one question, though.

Please tell us what the optimal average global temperature should be. How do we know that what we've experienced over the last couple hundred years is the "right" temperature?

Obama says its Our Fault
that we have global warming. We eat to much, drive SUV's and turn up our thurmastats or down depending on the weather and he will "CHANGE" all that when he is President.

Well we could all fight over the dumpster for our food, sleep in a cave and watch Obama and his Liberal friends drive ALL their SUV's, eat off a dinning room table (that someone else has fixed for them) and stay confortable.

Some solution for Global Warming.

Current computer models are useless
The state of the art for computer climate modeling is little better than making predictions using the entrails of a sacrificial goat.

Computer models which claim to predict the climate for decades on out need decades to be validated. The IPCC missed this past year's rapid cooling and completely missed the changes in the ocean currents which are driving that cool-off.

Every time I start thinkin' that John...

Global warming is not real. First, I want you to read a column from a leftist skeptic:

http://www.spiked-online.com/index.php?/site/reviewofbooks_ article/4357

Next, let me say that I very much doubt that the percentage is 1 out of 100 scientists who are skeptics. I think it's larger. Nor are the skeptics all shills for the oil industry. As I said to you a few days ago, the first skeptic among scientists that I encountered was an astrophysicist, who thought that the sun might be causing the observed changes. Do you really think she's a shill?

There are rumors on the Internet of data manipulation among those espousing global warming. Do you really want to be part of this? When it all comes out, you guys aren't going to look so good. You're going to be fending off people who say you lied to them. Is that what you want?

JFP
I went to the link you provided and found a confusing list of articles.

Could you please provide a little more information?

Thanks!

A conservative
"With well qualified conservatives available, why have we nominated an idiot to carry the GOP banner?"

Because the elitists and the smug refuse to admit that Ron Paul is the best choice.

Why is it that out of
99 posts by JM051 we get 99 lies vomited forth?

For Primus54 (#4)
It may actually be possible for wobbie to do a "P.H.D." by remote control--translated "moving a large pile of cowdung (pile hip deep) with a bulldozer".
;)

"Cap" = Rationing
According to the AP, McCAin has a history of not merely advocating "addressing" alleged anthrogenic CO2 induced climate change (ACO2ICC), but of insisting dogmatically on such measures as "cap & trade" REGARDLESS OF WHETHER ACO2ICC is true of not. I.e. he thinks this rationing scheme is the right thing to do even if the ostensible reason for it were totally discredited.

This position goes waaaayyyy beyond anything that could rationally be called "moderate" even given the definition of "moderate" voter as one of a group of voters completely invisible & voiceless except thru leftist pop media editorial boards. Mack favors a permanent institutionalized rationing scheme most kindly described as radical and extreme, tha6t would vastly grow government, for its own sake.

A reasonable moderate conservative position would be to predicate any restrictions on what could be proven to actually reduce risk of harm. Mack advocates starting up another of these evil little automatons that exist for their own sake & in the hands of activist lawyers go far beyond their ostensible original purposes (like the Endangered Species Act) eating us alive without need for Congress to dirty their paws further.

This confirms Mack's anticonservatism & unfitness to be elected or supported by any conservative, regardless of the alternatives. He would enact this stuff in our names with our mandate. Fortunately he's so "electable" and so popular with "moderates," we can let them elect him if they can.

Sorry about the link
When I pasted the link in, I too found a confusing list of articles, as Primus54 said. It's because the link got changed in the process (don't ask me why this happened). You can either delete the change (that is, delete the "%20" that suddenly appeared in the URL) or do a search on that site for "blasphemer." The article is by Alexander Cockburn.

Sam so its
Kissinger and the Bushes? I was afraid there was something we werent blaming them for already this closes the loop.

No part of this is correct
There is no part of the Global Climate Change thesis that is correct. McCain is off the rails.

The main argument for government action on climate change makes three claims:

1) The earth is warming.
2) Humans are causing it.
3) We can do something about it.

Until recently, the first was pretty much settled. However, as I documented on my blog back in February, even that claim is no longer completely supportable. Not only are global temperatures dropping, but there are excellent reasons to believe that then entire warming trend of the 90s was the result of bad measurements.

See http://plunmbbob.blogtownhall.com/2008/02/28/warming_debat able.thtml

Beyond that, though, the case suggesting that man is causing what warming has occurred has grown weaker as time has gone on. It is no longer the case that global temperatures appear to be tracking with human-generated CO2. It is no longer supportable that there's a feedback loop caused by CO2; it's become apparent that the earth compensates to prevent the loop. The most likely culprits at this time seem to be cloudiness caused by solar influences, and cyclical effects affected by ocean currents.

And finally, even if man was causing the problem, there is no action we could take now or within the foreseeably future that would reduce CO2 enough to make a difference in the climate. The best use of our money and energy would be learning to adapt to the changes -- something the Darwinists tell us we're better than any other species at doing.

Baseballdoc how
do I sign up? I'd like to try some polar bear

Discouraged
With all three nominees embracing global warming, with Sen Feinstein sneaking an amnesty bill into the war funding act, with the bloated farm bill and with my senator(Stabenaw) sending an email in reply to mine regarding whether she supported the Global Poverty Act in which she said she would keep my views in mind (means "no"), I am tremendously discouraged by our goverment.

I think it is a dangerous thing for our government when so many no longer have faith in it.

I also know how the Obamakins feel in just wanting change, any kind of change that will take us from where we are. (However, I have no faith in him.)

Export the rest of our mfg jobs, too
I also notice that while at some early point Mack made noises about penalizing such countries as China & India if they make things without CO2 restrictions & export them to us. He has of course backed off that position & now just promises to engage in "diplomacy" to address this huge advantage we'll be giving away.

In other words, we'll just export most of our CO2 emissions rather than reduce them ourselves. Then we'll buy our stuff from China & India instead. The only CO2 limitation will come when we're too impoverished & the dollar too inflated to actually for us to be able to afford imports anyway.

It used to be that one had to vote Democratic if not Socialist to get this kind of "blame America, kill our economy & standard of living" ideology. Seppuku for the GOP.

King Liberal
Thanks for your "concern" about my conservative eyes, but unlike my "liberal friends", I'm unafraid to read opinions proffered by the other side.

("Snort")

JFP
Thanks for the assistance.

I have now read his piece and my conservative eyes are still intact (much to King Liberal's disappointment).

I'm surprised the left hasn't asked Alexander Cockburn for his Liberal ID card back!

The election is just about over.
Now we just need to see which of the three Democrat candidates actually win.

No Warming Worries in Upper Midwest
John McCain is from Arizona. Al Gore is from Tennessee.

You don't see people from upper Midwest worried about so-called global warming because in between shoveling snow, paying heating bills, and dodging potholes, they are too busy.

Question
Why are complex government programs to reduce carbon emissions more favored by politicians than detonating a few dozen hydrogen bombs at the Nellis nuclear testing site? Does not ANYONE remember the TTAPS study?

Only an idiot would deny GW ...
is occurring. Only the gullible believe that man has even the remotest responsibility for its cause.

Homage to Gaia
Let us suppose that global warming is real. What then is the optimum temperature of the earth's climate? Do we divide the earth's climate into sectors? What if one sector is warmer than another or experiences a drought? Should we adjust our carbon footprint to bring rain to the needed sector ?

Should we divide these climate controlled sectors by geographical or into socio-economic regions? Who will determine the needs of each climate controlled sector?

There is a greater land mass in the northern hemisphere of the planet. There is also a greater number of people living in this northern hemisphere. Should the peoples of the southern hemisphere sacrifice for the greater good of their brethren in the northern hemisphere?

What if all the measures of controlling "climate change" reduces the optimum temperature by a greater amount than required and a cooling cycle erupts? Should we increase our carbon footprint to increase the temperature back to it's optimum level? Who decides what is optimum?

Don't the people of Northern Africa have a right to rain. Shouldn't we adjust the climate to bring rain to the much needed area of the Sahara? Should deserts be allowed to exist, or is the all part of the great diversity and tapestry of planetary life ?

Let us all join hands on the seashore to welcome the next Tsunami. The earth must remain in balance. Maybe we can move people to other planetary areas to keep the earth in balance and protect endangered species.

If we can control global warming or climate change then we can do all this, and along the way we can stop earthquakes, mudslides, droughts and blizzards.

The McAmnesty McMidget continues his PATHETIC attempt to make Liberals LIKE HIM! What McAmnesty fails/is too stupid to see is that once The DNC has its nominee, The MSM will turn on McMidget like a RABID DOG!

You bet, George

That's what's particularly amusing about McRINO right now. The media's paying all its attention to the Dem race, and McRINO's squirming around trying to grab some headlines... and making ALL the wrong moves!

He'd have a better chance if he'd just sit back and let their race play out while keeping his mouth shut. The guy can't do or say anything right or Right, at all.

I think he's in for a very rude awakening after the conventions.

It will be simply a hoot to see!

Just got notice that my 8 year old granddaughter has been expel from class for farting. they say she set of the CO2 alarm in the school. Boy cant wait until they get rid of food and such so we wont be producing CO2 anymore.

I recall growing up and CO2 was good for the tree life/forest what happened top that theory.

But when OBLAMA takes the WH and we have to quit driving, eating or sitting in our 72 degree homes that we bought, not the government unless you are a LIBERAL and its giving to you from our taxpayers money to house, feed and care for you because how whitey has been treating you.

Today’s would be aristocrats are trying to institute a new lucrative measure of control and rationing; carbon credits. In this new scheme certain well connected bureaucrats and politicians will determine and ration how much coal, wood or petroleum products they will allow a person, business and even country to use. Under the ruse and guise of “protecting the planet” they will be the sole, non-elected arbiters on how much carbon one can use for travel, heating and industry. In short, they will control all industrial processes along with modes and amount of travel. First, they will paraphrase Henny Penny’s portentous, despairing cry of imminent doom, “The sky is heating!” Then, the only solution proffered will be absolute control of all combustion. Finally, only friends, contributors and companies in which they or their collaborators own stock will be allowed access to resources needed for industry and the economy. This resembles the government-chartered monopolies in the age of Mercantilism. In fact it will be a type of Marxist monopoly envisioned in Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas Shrugged. And who stands to benefit for this feudal right to allocate resources and sell the permission to use carbon? It will be their new Excellencies, Al Gore, Robert Kennedy, Barack Obama and the rest of the Democratic progressive elite. ( Also include Senator McCain in this attempt to be a Commissar of Combustion)

P.S Carbon Dioxide is only 1/3 of one percent, that is 0.0034 of the pressure, volume and mass of the air. 79% is Nitrogen almost 21% oxygen.

If it weren't for the judges......
A President McCain would try to appoint reasonable Supreme Court justices. Obama will appoint Ginsburgs and Breyers (two of those who approved taking private property for developers in Connecticut). For that reason, Conservatives, Republicans, and thinking Independents MUST hold their collective noses and vote for the RINO.
Too bad McCain didn't pay attention to his science courses at the Academy -- not only is a consensus about climate meaningless, now the truth is out: "31,000 Scientists Say No To Global Warming - And Response"! See http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_128269.asp

Alston Chase: "When the search for truth is

IF global warming is happening, I doubt humans have anything to do with it nor can it be altered. Isn't it interesting how humans can be manipulated into practically anything?! Long term earth climate cycles cant be altered no matter what McDouche, Hillary Cankleton, or Barrack Hussein Oblama plan on doing. As for Algore, well, chalk up another million from the Israelis....I actually thought they might be smarter than that...or they had a spare $million. All that does is add credence to a sham. But alas, we usually miscalculate the intelligence of the majority of the world's population - even ours - look who we keep sending to the houses of congress. How depressing. McAmnesty McMidget is just a vote prostitute.

"Just one more reason I can't vote for McCain."

I've been back and forth with that myself. I swear to vote 3rd party, then Obama says he wants to essentially ration our food and resources to appease the global community. Then I'm back to voting for Mccain. Then Mccain says something worse than the last time, and I'm back to voting 3rd party...UNTIL the Obama's say something worse. It's a nasty, vicious cycle that keeps my head in a constant 'NO' nod.

Hillary 's Plan is Working thanks to McC
Senator Clinton's ploy will be to position herself as the middle-way, not too far left, just a pragmatic politician. In that way, she will rid herself of the taints of progressive or radicalism that now surround Barack OBama. He will act as the flypaper and bug zapper , attracting all those annoying and embarassing politically correct zealots. Let Barack Obama be tainted with his ties to the racist Reverend Wright, SDS Marxist revolutionary friends. So many radicals, progressives and every group with an ax to grind have already betrayed and deserted Hillary.. She will use that (Planned?) dissociation to her advantage, claiming she no has no allegiance to the Marxist and progressives that control much of the Democratic Party. Senator McCain gambled that he could acquire the independents and Reagan Democrats by his defiant rejection of conservative members of the Republican Party. Basically, Hillary pulled a brilliant tactical, Rope-a-dope coup on "the maverick",Senator McCain. With the lure of media endorsement, accolades and admiration, the hubris of Senator McCain was enticed to reject his loyal supporters and to become a bi-partisan buddy with Ted Kennedy and Sen. Feingold. He was promised the the dream of capturing all those independent and undecided voters. But these were the voters Hillary had targeted all along. Like a Maurice De Tallyrand, Senator Clinton will now transform into a moderate, turning Senator Obama into a radicalized Ralph Nader and John McCain as a Judas who rejected his party and base. Only a major shift to the conservative right, a conservative VP like Duncan Hunter, and lots of apologies and appeasements can save Senator McCain now.McCain to swing right and Hillary to run up the middle? Mike Guy

Sorry, jpip, that doesn't wash.

First of all, the two most likely Justices to retire are Ginsburg and Stevens, the two most liberal. So two libs get replaced with two other libs; so what?

Secondly, at BEST judicial appointments are a crapshoot. O'Conner and Souter were both appointed by Republicans.

Lastly, why would you think McRINO would appoint "constructionist" Justices? Simply because he SAYS so?

McRINO about Alito: "He wears his conservatism on his sleeve". It wasn't meant as a compliment.

McRINO would have to appoint the type of Justices that would hold McCain-Feingold unconstitutional, and he still considers that his legacy legislation.

Last year when Wisconsin RTL v. FEC was before SCOTUS, McRINO filed an amicus brief in support of the FEC.

Fortunately, SCOTUS held for WRTL, partially dismantling McCain-Feingold.

I wouldn't look to McRINO to be appointing any truly "constructionist" jurists.

Primus 54
Regarding your #42 and others who ask this question about the optimal temperature: it's time to change this question. Some AGW advocates are hip to the fact that the last decade wiped out the average increase in recorded temperatures over the previous century, and now there is no "global warming."

The new mantra is "climate change," as in, "fighting climate change." Now, the question to ask about fighting climate change is, "Why?" Climate change is the normal state of things. There is not and has never been a condition of "climate stasis."

But the new question that should be asked of the Activists Formerly Known As Anthropogenic Global Warming Advocates is more pointed, and parallels the structure of the once-pertinent question about what the optimal temperature should be. It is this: how much carbon dioxide SHOULD there be in the atmosphere? What is the optimum amount? What relation is there between the optimum amount, and the Cap-and-trade or Kyoto goals for emission reduction? What is the basis for assessing an optimum amount, given that average global temperature does not demonstrate the connection previously asserted with CO2 levels? WHY is X level of CO2 the optimum level?

As far as I can tell, we have no more idea what is "the" optimum level of CO2 than we had about what "the" optimum temperature should be.

Hold your nose and vote for McCain
5 reasons to vote for McCain named:
Ginburg

McCain on Global Warming
It would be nice to write a big critique to McCain telling him how wrong he is.Real and not junk science driven by big bucks and politics has shown that the current hysteria over climate change,a most normal phenomana is not man made, but McCain wouldn't understand so why bother.
This junk science joins other fiascos such as DDT elimination, bird flue disaster, etc.and is just as harmful to mankind.
Appleton

GW is real
I'm mixed on the carbon trading scheme. On one hand, it will add yet another layer of bureaucracy which is inevitable going to increase opportunities for government and corporate corruption.

On the other hand, free market capitalism has clearly revealed itself to be a failure. It simply cannot account for management of the shared "externality" of the atmosphere and the environment.

Hey art, I found your labeling of DDT elimination a "fiasco" quite amusing. Only a Conservative could have said something so stupid.

BrianR in CA
You're against McCain if you disagree with what he says, or if he says what you believe, you say he doesn't mean it.
OK, you don't like him no matter what.
You'd rather have Obama? Who NEVER aggrees with you, or McCain who probably does 50-70% of the time. (Or are you a seminar caller who lies?)
If you care about the SC, maybe McCain is a crap shoot, but Obama is a lead pipe cinch to give us more Breyers and Ginsburgs. He says he will.
BTW, BrianR, thanks for reading and replying to my comment BUT I didn't say that Ginsburg and Breyer will be the first gone, I wrote that Obama will appoint justices like Ginsberg and Breyer because that's what he said. Wheteher they replace Stevens or Sueter or Ginsburg or Breyer or Kennedy or the good guys, they will be like Ginsburg and Breyer -- the only two on the court appointed by a democrat.

Jpip

I'm saying McCain is lying because his actions belie his promises, and I stated what those actions were. You seem willing to overlook his actions and simply believe whatever he says, regardless of his history.

Which of us is truly being naive?

Further, McCain does NOT agree with me 50%-70% of the time. As far as I can tell, he's just Joe Lieberman in drag. (Has anybody ever seen both of them in the same room at the same time?)

And yes, I'M the one who said Ginsburg and Stevens will probably be the first to go, because that's simply the way it is. They're the oldest.

Frankly, as far as I'm concerned, the remaining players in the race are the Three Stooges; Dumb, Dumber and Dumberer. I really can't tell them apart.

I view McCain as the bigger long-term threat to the country because he is the epitomization of the Californiation of the nation; an ever-leftward drift of the GOP resulting in a pruportedly Republican California Governator who proposes his own very liberal agenda (tax hikes, government health care, state globull warming mandates), caucuses with the Sacramento Dems, and treats the few remaining conservatives like they have rabies.

Sacramento GOP legislators who collude with the Dems in redistricting to assure the safety of their own seats while accepting permanent minorty status.

Is THAT what you want for the rest of the country? Because that's what you're getting with McCain.

For me, no mas (the soon-to-be official Leftifornia language).

Justices...
McCain's on the global warming bandwagon, he's for amnesty, against domestic oil exploration and for national healthcare. The guy is a liberal. What makes anyone think that he would appoint a conservative justice?

PS, jpip

As to being a "seminar caller":

I've been very active on this site for over 2 years, and probably have one of the highest profiles here. When I was actively blogging, I had one of the blogs with the highest hit and comment counts, and my essays are still there; just click my underlined name.

I'm not writing anything new here. As a matter of fact, some of my essays from back in 2006 predicted EXACTLY this situation if either McCain or Giuliani got the nomination: a disaster for the GOP.

I FURTHER foecast Bush's decline in popularity at a time when he still had pretty decent approval ratings.

FYI.

To 'JMO51':
The "global warming" alarmists, every single one of them, without exception, are connected to the hip with radical far-left environmental extremists out to control every aspect of our lives through fear-mongering and the cynical use of polar bears for their own propaganda purposes. You actually agree with Barack Obama's blatant promises in a recent speech to dictate the way we live, whether we like it or not?

co2
Here's the problem, we have far to many in leadership positions are now worrying about CO2. I suggest they lead by example and stop breathing for one hour.

Case and point, wipe out the worry warts.

Hello mudmucker
In your post #85 you state that free market capitalism is a failure. The problem is that government interference in free market capitalism programs failure into the system beyond the norm.

If you believe that free market capitalism is a failure then please allow me to determine what your needs and requirements are as well as the compensation you receive. I am more than capable of seeing to it that you fulfill your social responsibility to the unfortunate.

I have wisdom beyond yours because I say so. Your belief that you can spend your money as you see fit does not meet with my approval. I will take a poll amongst the other contributors of Townhall and we will decide how much your compensation should be and how much you should keep. It is important to us that you fulfill your responsibility to the environment. If you do not do so we will charge you a carbon tax and use the money to plant trees.

A committee will be formed to decide on what car you drive and should we deem necessary you will be restricted to the use of mass transit if a determination is made that you do not need a car.

Please stay tuned. Your instructions on your part of combatting climate change will be forthcoming. I heard this morning that you are eating too much and further instructions will arrive on your caloric intake.

This is the....
...kind of stuff that scares me about McLame! Yes ...I will be very reluctantly voting for him ...pinching my nose tightly ...but what is it about this 'maverick' that makes him blunder into enemy territory, politically speaking, so head-strong and wrong-headed?

Is he just plain stupid? Can he read? Does he not make him self informed about critical issues like the global warming hoax for fear of offending the Dems or the left?

Global Warning er...Warming
Applying simple logic to the question, does CO2 cause global warming, we have to conclude that, yes but, only on planet earth. The conclusion is based upon the facts that CO2 makes up approximately 0.3 percent of our atmosphere,(thats 300PPM) and that on earth, the presence of 800,000PPM of Nitrogen and 200,000PPM of oxygn create a situation that forces CO2 to cause global warming here.

Of course, on Mars, where CO2 makes up the bulk of that planet's atmosphere, there is no global warming because there is no significant Nitrogen or Oxygen.

Perhaps a climatologist can explain this for us.

tibby at 2:08pm
Nice response to mudmucker, but I fear you've wasted your time. I was going to give a pointed response about how malaria could be virtually wiped off the planet were it not for environmental whackos who have been successful in banning DDT but I decided it just wouldn't matter to him/her.

The cause of the poor in undeveloped countries is obviously of little concern to the likes of mudmucker. Whether it be freedom through the expansion of free markets or eliminating the threat dying due to a wholly preventable disease (due to junk science, no less!), the libs don't want those in the third world to have more than they do. It gets back to the point that they really do know what's best for the rest of us.

He should change his name to mud-SCHMUCK-er!

How about if...
we bust a "cap" in these clowns talking about the "trade" in carbon credits?

Boondoggle plus ...
John; looking at this realistically you are correct. First and foremost the EARTH is in an orbit and as such can move within that orbit. “IF” by moving closer or further from the sun, I would guess the environment will change. Earth will move within its orbit; “NOW” if the moon affects the tides then would the sun and the moon affect our weather? What I see is simply this; another attempt at terrorizing the public on something that may very well be happening because it is by nature, suppose to. Why do I say this; because it always costs more money “NOT” to do or add something in production and this brings up the biggest boondoggle invented by American business and that is Research and Development! The cost of R&D in America is astronomical! There is nothing more grossly overcharged than R&D period! Also; when someone can tell me how by reducing our output by say 5% will help out when, by shipping our industry offshore and raising output in Hong Kong, Viet Nam or Singapore say 10%, someone please tell me how this works. Once more the average American gets to pay the price of someone else’s idea to simply take their money as proved by “SCIENCE” and the year 2000 boondoggle! That electronic melt down, and the terrier that went with it, never happened, they were wrong. Like everything else, this is about making money and nothing more.

HATE'S POLAR BEAR HUNTING EXPO ON HOLD
.....HAGAR ... MEETING AT NORM'S BLOG

My TH blog, The Blogatorium, has a new mission: To serve as a forum for disenchanted conservatives who cannot in good conscience support John McCain, and want to use their vote wisely and effectively in November.

This endeavor is predicated on the following assumptions:

1. That the GOP has abandoned conservatism, and that conservatives are consequently under no moral, ethical, or other obligation to support the so-called "lesser of two evils."

2. That no true conservative would willingly and enthusiastically support John McCain.

3. That the basic tenets of conservatism are accurately reflected in the "three-legs" model (social, fiscal, and national security), and that a true conservative will embrace all three.

4. That conservatives may, however, differ on the application of each "leg," particularly with respect to questions of faith, and should respect each others' right to do so.

5. That with unprecedented turmoil in both major parties, there has never been a better time to galvanize and mobilize conservative support for a viable, third-party candidate.

6. That compromise is often necessary in politics, but that there comes a time when compromise becomes counterproductive and even suicidal.

7. That the GOP, in making an abusive and manipulative “case” for John McCain, is asking conservatives to put party over principle and to help the GOP destroy the conservative movement.

8. That, in consequence of the aforementioned, a forum should exist wherein conservatives may discuss, debate, and compare the various third-party candidates.

9. That conservatives should, as much as possible, throw their support to ONE third-party candidate, en masse, in order to facilitate a strong showing in November, and future election victories.

Good try, tibby
The problem with your #92 response to mudmucker is that it wouldn't hurt his feelings to think of himself or others being told whether and what to drive.

His problem is that he has bought into the proposition that human activity is doing catastrophic damage to the planet. Once you buy into the idea that "each serving his own economic interest produces catastrophic, irreversible damage to the climate/environment," then clearly what has to be eliminated is the "each serving his own economic interest" part.

The proper focus for "anthropogenic climate change" skeptics is on the fact that we have no reason to believe climate change can be defined as a seminal problem, much less a catastrophic or an anthropogenic one. In truth, given that climate patterns are never static, it is a serious question what we even mean when we utter the words "climate change."

Before we get together and make the political decision that, in order to "save the planet," life must revert to being solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short, there needs to be solid evidence that the great cycles of nature are actually being disturbed. Our ability to even measure and comprehensively record the events in these cycles has been with us for such a very short time -- less than 200 years, at the outside -- that it often seems hilarious that every new thing we learn sends factions scurrying off to prognosticate doom and assign human blame.

GWInsanity
Now, that is insane. Voting for someone whom you disagree with on probably the most pivotal issue of our day. Who will be leading you to the poll in handcuffs and 'forcing' you to vote McCain. Just asking? There are not just two candidates although they certainly want you to keep thinking like this. It makes you very easy to lead.

America has "doomed" itself
Ron Paul remains the last straw of hope for America, and yet, most American's are so blinded with an Immperialistic mindset, even more so than the British ever were at the time some ragtag yanquis chased from America soil and told them in no uncertain term, to stay the hell out of this piece of freedom for all.

McCain is to me a legal immigrant of 52 years and a staunch conservative Republican, nothing but a sort of refried Mr. Hitler! I am even less fearful of Obama! Why someone may ask? Simply because he may do a pull out of Iraq, which should be done immediatly.

By the way, who in the hell has given this idiotic George W. the authoriy to built that despicable, Hitleristic, Stalinistic, etc., so called monstrosity of Embassy in Iraq anyway? Where are all the Conservative organizations, from the WSJ, and on down the line with not a word of complaint as this evil thing is being built and putting America ever deeper into the already existing complete financial bankrupt conditions?

Yes, those immortal words by Ron Paul into the face to this refried Mr. Hitler that of McCain will haunt America forever when he said this: The terrorists are here because we are there! Yes, America sticks its ugly big nose evermore into every corner of the world, while letting the homeland to go, literally go to hell.

The words of General Douglas MacArthur went like this: "I am concerned for the security of our great nation; not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within".

McCain and Global Warming
I just heard another one of those experts on this science saying that human life on earth only contributes 2% of all the bad gases that contribute to "Global Warming." If this is true or even close; how can we make enough of a difference to stop it. If we conserved to the extreme, it still would not change what the earth seems to be doing naturally. L.

Global Warming and the price to the US
If we start placing limits on CO2 emissions on companies and charging for their Carbon footprint, then most likely those costs will be put onto US citizens only. Like with the drug companies who sell drugs to foreign countries for 1/10 cost they charge us. We end up paying for all the R&D and drug co.s' profits while the rest of the world takes a ride off of us ....again....as usual. China and India are making the worst impact on Global Warming now and no one wants to force them into the Kyoto Treaty. The US had the good sense not to sign on for that either. If products cost X amount of $$$s here, there should be a world law in the Kyoto Treaty perhaps, that will be the same price to the rest of the world as well. Now everyone who wants to enjoy and benefit from such products will pay their fair share of the Kyoto Treaty/Global Warming Footprint taxes placed on them. It seems it never ends up that way. The US flips the bill; carries the largest burden for the rest of the world. L

Chimney police on their way to So-Cal
Stossel may have been joking when he asked about the chimney police, but in Southern California they're already looking to put in a law that would make it a crime for homeowners to burn wood in their fireplace during "high pollution days". How will this be enforced? Will there be police officers sniffing outside of peoples homes trying to detect the smell of wood burning? And if so, will this give them "probable cause" to enter homes to investigate?
Think I'm making this up? See here:
