Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

I'd heard that that presidential candidate Ron Paul was "hard line" on immigration and "to the right" of the Republican field. But that's not exactly what he revealed during my interview with him. Here's Part 4 of my edited interview.

You want a 700-mile fence between our border and Mexico?

Ron Paul: Not really. There was an immigration bill that had a fence (requirement) in it, but it was to attack amnesty. I don't like amnesty. So I voted for that bill, but I didn't like the fence. I don't think the fence can solve a problem. I find it rather offensive.

What should we do?

Get rid of the subsidies. (If) you subsidize illegal immigration, you get more of it.

Get rid of welfare?

All the welfare benefits.

Including government-paid health care?

Absolutely.

So what should a hospital do if an illegal immigrant shows up for treatment?

Be charitable, but have no mandates by the federal government. Catholics want to help a lot of these people. I'm not for (punishing anyone who wants to help voluntarily). But we wouldn't have so many (illegals) if they didn't know they were going to get amnesty. If you promise them amnesty -- medical care, free education, automatic citizenship, food stamps, and Social Security -- you're going to get more (illegal immigration). I think we could be much more generous with our immigration. (But) we don't need to reward people who get in front of the line.

We should be more generous in our legal immigration policy?

(Without the welfare state) it would be a non-issue. Today it's a big issue because people are hurting; they can't keep up with paying their bills. They see (illegals) using food stamps, in the emergency rooms, demanding bilingual education in the schools. The costs are going up.

So get rid of all those programs? Every one?

I would. Get rid of the incentives and work toward a real solution.

You oppose "birthright citizenship," which says that the child of an illegal immigrant who gives birth in America is a U.S. citizen. But that right to citizenship is in the Constitution, isn't it?

There's confusion on interpreting the 14th Amendment. It says that if you're under the jurisdiction of the United States, you have a right to citizenship if you're born here. But it's a little bit confusing. If you step over the border and you're illegal, are you really under the jurisdiction? There's a question on that, and I want to clarify it. I don't like to reward people who sneak in for that purpose and get on the welfare rolls.

What about the millions who are here illegally already? Should we deport them?

I don't think anybody could find them. Nobody even knows how many there are. But if they come for welfare benefits and you know they're illegal, (you should) deny them the benefits. If they commit a crime, send them home. Today in many cities, you're not even allowed to ask them their immigrant status. Policemen tell me they can't ask that question to find out if they're illegal. It's politically incorrect to ask a person his immigrant status because that would (be like saying), "If you've broken the law, maybe you ought to go home."

How do you see immigration in the future?

If we have a healthy economy, we would probably have a lot of people coming back and forth working in this country. There was a time when (immigrants did that). That was when they didn't expect to get easy amnesty.

Good Point on Going Home
I read somewhere that even during the height of pass immigrations, such as when we were flooded with Italian and Irish immigrants -- fully 25% of them eventually went back home.

We need some sort of way were somebody can come here and work legally, then go back home. Ironically, the tougher we've made it to sneak in to the US, the worse illegal immigration has become. Illegals don't go back home anymore (voluntarily), because it's too hard to come back. They don't want to chance it.

But not amnesty -- if someone is caught being here illegally, send them home immediately. And get rid of this crap where cops and hospitals etc. aren't allowed to ask. If an illegal is pulled over for a traffic ticket, send him home. If an illegal is in the ER with an illness, treat the illness and contact the INS.

Bottom line: we need a completely revamped temporary worker program that lets people in legally. NOT to become citizens, NOT to be assimilated, NOT to get on the welfare rolls; but to WORK. Then go back home.

If they eventually want to become citizens, to assimilate, that's fine too; but they have to go a different route. That's something other than a guest worker program, that's an "Intended Citizen" track.

easy to find
If there are millions of illegals in this country, how hard can it be to round them up - just organize a rally. I found myself agreeing with Ron Paul until this comment about not being able to find them. This is the problem I have with the guy. I can agree with him to a point, but then he says something bizarre. Any law enforcement person who can't find an illegal should not be drawing a salary, certainly not a pension.

Paul is Right
I think Paul has it right on immigration - ending birthright citizenship for illegals is just common sense. Huck and McCain will just give us more of the Bush solution - which ensures cheap labor is readily available and does not penalize the law breakers.

Ron Paul on Immigration

Hard to "Evict".
Illegal immigrants have, for all intent and purpose, acquired their residency by a form of Adverse Enjoyment and Possession. They have trespassed upon "US Property" in an "open and notorious manner", squatted, ate, slept, reproduced, worked, paid taxes, died,....need I go on? All within the full view and knowledge of the property owner(s). The time to build a fence has come and gone. The 1986 Amnesty should not have been unilaterally passed, but done so in concert by a treaty with Mexico first, that locked both governments in an enforcement agreement. Deportation? That ship has sailed. The best we can hope for is a correction in the interpretation of the 14th. Amendment regarding citizenship by birth within border, but without jurisdiction.

spiritof76: Agreed!!! ...

"... I can agree with him to a point, but then he says something bizarre..." and shoots himself right in the foot!!!

This time it was right up until he made the comment about "not being able to find them." One of the dumbest comments to be made about the illegal alien problem... And, it's NOT JUST PAUL!!!

Unca Alby writes
"We need some sort of way were somebody can come here and work legally, then go back home".

Unca Alby, you HAVE heard of temporary work permits (such as H1-b, TN-1, R-1, ...)? Admittedly, one cannot guarantee that the temp worker will want to go home as soon as the permit expires (almost all of the temp work permits can be renewed so long as there is work; specifically, the TN-1 can be renewed year-after-year).

Bucko writes about malfeasant aliens
"They have trespassed upon "US Property" in an "open and notorious manner", squatted, ate, slept, reproduced, worked, paid taxes, died,....need I go on?"

Bucko, most of the malfeasants DO NOT pay taxes--but draw benefits such as "indigent care".

For spiritof76
On the nail. This was exactly how Elvira Arellano (who had actually entered illegally a second time, AFTER being deported) was caught; she decided to actively participate in a L.A. rally.

What really annoys me is the use of "we don't want our family to be separated". I have seen many Indian (legal) temp workers who have US-born children, and who have returned to India--an act which requires much paperwork, as India doesn't allow true dual citizenship. Ergo, I have no sympathy for malfeasant aliens who have deliberately produced "anchor children" only for use to avoid deserved deportation.

Anchor Babies
Until the topic of anchor babies is Constitutionally clarified, we can honor the citizenship of children who have been born here, but they will have to return (with their parents) to the parent's country of origin until they are eighteen years old. Saying we can't find them is ridiculous, so we should be able to deport a good amount of illegals. I agree that many will self-deport if we can eliminate the social programs and clamp down on those who employ them. Dr. Paul has some great ideas, but I'm afraid of what would happen if he immediately pulled the troops out.

Ron Paul on illegal immigration (more)
http://www.ronpaullibrary.org/topic.php?id=5

Something to consider...
If you remove the incentives, most will self-deport.

Ron Paul is speaking live right now

Paul Will Finish Third in Iowa
Paul's supporters are so ardent and enthusiastic that they will finish third in Iowa. Though I'm a Huck fan I admire them and I am grateful for his being pro-life.

Spiritof76/Anne

You're both unfairly misconstruing Dr. Paul's statement about not being able to find illegals. He was responding to Mr. Stossel's very open-ended question: "What about the millions who are here illegally already? Should we deport them?"

In this context, his response of: "I don't think anybody could find them" is entirely accurate.

No one realistically suggests that we can find ALL 12mm illegals. (I note that the FBI is STILL looking for D.B. Cooper. Dr. Paul is correct that finding all 12mm illegals about whom we have NO background information is an absolute impossiblity.)

But you both took his comment out of context and have essentially criticized him for something that he didn't say: that "we can't find any illegals." This is unfair. Worse, it validates the complaint of Dr. Paul's supporters that the anti-Paulists are nothing but cheap-shot artists.

Dr. Paul is a brilliant man. No other candidate has offered anything even half as insightful as Dr. Paul on the immigration issue. No other candidate has anywhere close to his clarity of thinking on economic issues.

Give the man credit when he deserves it.

Save your criticism for the two places where it't warranted: (i) his incredibly offensive set of supporters, and (ii) his dangerously unrealistic foreign policy.

When swing voters realize...
...that it isn't the twelve million that the government keeps talking about, but it's 20 to 38 million (as estimated by CAlifornians for Pop. Stabilization) they will be outraged that the Dems tried to push amnesty down our throats.

38 million, if true, becomes 50 mil by the time all the relatives and "illegal" relatives are added in. In too short of time, 50 becomes 100, in a future with skyrocketing food, energy and healthcare costs, AND climate change.

Alrready illegal immigration is costing us tens of billions per year in deficit spending. It threatens to bankrupt many hospitals.

Swing voters may turn away from the Dems for a long long time. THE REAL FIGURES MUST BE VERIFIED AND PUBLICIZED. We must know what we are getting into (or, with luck, narrowly avoiding)

Sept12Rep: The comments were based

on what he said and what was in this column.

And please, I think we're smart enough to instinctivly KNOW that no one means "ALL" as in 100% of the illegal aliens, but certainly the MAJORITY!

Funny though, no matter what, when someone disagrees with paul, it's because they don't understand, or some other excuse!!!

But, IF so many people seem to misunderstand, or not get his message, than paul has done an abysmal job of stating his case about pretty much EVERYTHING.

Anne: Fair Point

I suppose that I'm guilty of overstating your (and Spiritof76's) position.

But even if Dr. Paul was only referring to an inability to find even a majority of illegals (and not to all illegals), I still think he's correct. These are people who don't wish to be found. Our nation, as amazing as it is, doesn't have the resources to roust out half, a quarter or perhaps even 5% of the 12mm (or 38mm, if you accept Austin Nick's estimates).

So why not consider Dr. Paul's solution? Abolish the incentives, and many of these folks go home on their own volition. And a good number of those that stay behind will do so for the right reasons -- that they want honest work.

I would not be in favor of a President Paul. But, as far as I'm concerned, Candidate Paul is nothing but healthy for our nation.

I hope that the Republicans are smart enought to give him a featured speaking role at the national convention. Frankly, I wouldn't even be all that bothered if he opted to go the 3rd-party route.

pretty Darn Good
I agree pretty much on what Paul had to say. I nly encourage theirs not to give up or decide not to try to deport found illegal immigrants. I would also encourage border security first. Secure the borders.

The only issue I take up with Dr. Paul is his declaring the fence as offensive. I don't get it. Why would any nation bulding a fence around its borders be offensive? If it protects us than what's offensive about it?

Comments on Legal Immigration
With or without the welfare state (and let's face the fact that it aint going anywhere soon) legal immigration is still an issue. I'm not sure how Dr. Paul thinks that welfare is the only reason for wanting to reduce the absurdly high level of legal immigration now flooding our country with well over 1 million people per year.

Their are still cultural and ecological components to the desire to reduce this flood. I really don't want to see our population double during this century even though I won't live to see the end. I don't want to see mega cities of 25 million people with sprawl and development stretching hundreds of miles from the core. I like America as a country of abundant resources and large swaths of undeveloped land.

Paul falls short on immigration
No true conservative would argue with Paul’s recommendation to reduce government entitlements (to citizens as well as non-citizens). That said, in Paul’s 40 years serving in the House of Representatives, which actually has its hands on the nation’s purse strings, how much luck has he actually had in reducing entitlements to illegals? Does Mr. Paul suggest that we have to wait until we change the hearts and minds in congress on the evils of entitlements before we can do anything about the illegal invasion that is currently overwhelming us?

The problem is that the Supreme Court has held that illegals can not be denied access to free education or health care, regardless of any laws congress might pass to reduce incentives to illegal immigration. As it is now, local jurisdictions-- where welfare benefits are handed out-- either are not allowed to ask about the recipient’s immigration status or are presented with fake IDs and SS#s. Since Paul is against a proposed national identity database that would allow a local law enforcement officer (or employer, health care provider, etc.) to verify a person’s citizenship status, how does Paul propose that we deny welfare benefits to illegals without such a legal citizenship database?

Does Paul, being a representative from Texas, not know that thousands of tons of illegal narcotics as well as human trafficking enter the U.S. through the virtually open desert of the southwest? These drug and human traffickers are able to simply drive cars, trucks and buses across the flat empty expanse of the southern border without inspection or impediment directly into American cities. Since drug traffickers and criminal gang members (many of whom are affiliated with the brutal Mexican Mafia) would not be affected by Paul’s proposed entitlement reduction, what does Paul suggest we do to slow down the influx of drugs? Oh, I forgot, Paul wants to legalize drugs, so that’s not a problem according to him—never mind!

Simplistic solutions on immigration...
When Paul’s House colleague, Duncan Hunter, built a 16 mile double security fence at the San Diego border, crime was reduced by 53% in the city almost immediately. Duncan Hunter is the only presidential candidate who has vowed to build that same fence along all 860 miles of the southern border (as is currently called for in the already passed and funded border security act of 2006). To date, only 5 miles of that fence has been erected, to the shame of our lying and despicable congress.

I do strongly agree with Paul’s position on the 14th amendment and believe that this is a problem of judicial activism which shouldn’t require a constitutional convention to solve. However, realistically, it will take years for a reversal of the current absurd interpretation to work its way through our arcane and convoluted judicial system.

In the mean time, keep your eyes on the new Arizona laws (effective Jan. 1st) designed to reduce illegal immigration. These new laws call for penalties (up to permanent loss of one’s business license) against employers who are found to have knowingly hired illegals. For several months, businesses that have been letting their undocumented workers go in advance of the new law going into effect. Early reports indicate that self-deportation of Arizona's illegals is already taking occurring at a significant pace.

Just like Paul’s simplistic, illogical and naive positions on foreign policy (complete military isolationism) and the war on terror (it’s OUR fault), his solutions on illegal immigration don’t offer any realistic hope of dealing with the extremely serious problem that it poses today and excludes Paul from serious consideration as a presidential contender.

Beware the Huckster on ILLEGALS
I simply do not trust the Huckster on the CRITICAL issue of stanching ILLEGALS, who will destroy America if not stopped and reversed. We can do this by enforcing EXISTING laws and requiring REAL I.D. to function in America-- to work, rent, get licenses, seek services, attend college, pass go, etc. When they cannot get jobs and bennies ILLEGALLY, they will repatriate attritively the same ways they came.

ILLEGALS are EASILY the most serious threat to America's socio-economic well-being because today's modern service economy CANNOT benefit on balance from importing the ignorant indigent, who inevitably become HUGE net users of tax $ and social welfare services. The left wants them to vote ASAP to assure a permanent entitlement welfare state; hence, the drivers license motor voter fraud scheme rejected by 75% of New Yorkers. Here is an excellent summary of where the candidates stand on ILLEGALS (Mitt and Fred are best among front-runners) including actions while in office:

http://www.betterimmigration.com/candidates/2006/prez08_gop 1.html

The Huckster has favored tuition for ILLEGALS and said that he does not understand resentment toward them. What about "ILLEGAL" does he not get?! Understand that some 22% of ILLEGAL aliens overstayed visas-- they need to be sent back also. America should only welcome educated, skilled immigrants who come here LEGALLY! Sen. Juan McQuisling deserves no 2nd chance for finally "getting the message," and Sanctuary City Regularization Rudy is a no-go also.

Ron Paul is sold on ILLEGALS
Ron Paul is right-- it is the ILLEGAL jobs and freebies that attract them like bugs to a street light. They will keep flooding in because we have better jobs than Mexico and do not enforce our laws to stop and return them. Some employers want them for selfish reasons (while taxpayers subsidize the myriad concomitant costs), and the left knows it can manipulate them --> it will be 40 acres and a mule redux. As I noted below, we need only enforce EXISTING laws, unlike quisling traitor Presidente Jorge.

OOPS-- I meant "solid" on ILLEGALS!
Ron Paul has well thought out, solid, traditional conservative positions... his detractors like to try to [paint him as a crackpot, but he is really an America First true constitutional conservative. He is right that government has gotten WAY to invasive in our lives, and America has no business trying to play policeman in the M.E. or elsewhere. We will have squandered $2 TRILLION in Iraq only to prove to the Islamics that we are Israel's dupe and sheep (as they see it)... the neoCONS totally snookered Presidente Jorge-- just as Hispanics and miscreant employers have.

Ron Paul is the most conservative
on illegal immagration period.
America was allways and should allways be the land of the free and the home of the brave.
States and buisneses should have the burden of fighting illegal immagration. You should be able to employ anyone off the street for an honest days work.
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CAN PROTECT IRAQS BORDERS BUT NOT OURS??????? Is that what I pay taxes for?
WTF is wrong with you?
Erase all the benifits and expand the patriot act to include illegals as enemy combatants. Then start shipping them all off to a foreign prisons. Soon enouogh they will get the hint.

My take on Ron Paul
There are things on which I agree with him, but
he is like Ross Perot. He just is not
presidential material. In too many of his
stances, he is way over the top. Don't need him.

You should be president
For all of you who know everything in advance of what will happen, why are you not running for office? I dont mind opinions, but when you state things as fact, well, since you talk the talk....

laohu
Immigration solutions provide no realistic hope?

Answer something for me. Who has less illegal aliens right now? Oklahoma who passed legislation taking away almost every incentive possible for an illegal alien to be there, or California, who built a fence? Hint: Illegal aliens have been self-deporting from Oklahoma in droves, since the legislation was passed.

Fences are great, but unless you plan to build a very good one across the ENTIRE BORDER that the U.S. has with Canada (and keep it maintained), we'd better have another plan. Dr. Paul voted for the fence, by the way. Because it, and additional Border Guards are needed. (Note: If you're worried so much about the border, you might want to read up on the fact that we have sent a good percentage of our Border Guard to IRAQ!!!)

Stopping the incentives for the illegal aliens coming here is the solution. Take away free health care, free education and all the rest. What the heck is the federal government doing anyway, forcing the states to provide this to illegal aliens. What part of ILLEGAL do they not understand?

viruddh
What part of the Constitution do you have a problem with, viruddh? I'm curious.

I question my opinion on Iraq War
the more I get to know Ron Paul. He makes sense on so many issues. I still support Bush, yet I wonder how we get involved in this crap on the other side of the planet. We shouldn't allow in people from terrorist states and let's stop buying their oil.

Anne
"But, IF so many people seem to misunderstand, or not get his message, than paul has done an abysmal job of stating his case about pretty much EVERYTHING."

Anne, I agree that there have been times that I wanted to pull my hair out because I wish he would have explained something in a different way. Sometimes, he takes for granted that people understand more than they do. After all, we've had certain things drilled in our heads by the MSM for so long, it takes a pretty darn good explanation to counteract all the years of propaganda. But consider one thing, Anne, while you are judging him. He is the only one who is saying anything different. The other candidates are just yapping platitudes. Things that take no explanation, because they are fed to us nightly by the MSM.

- Americans have forgotten what free markets are. (No, it's not NAFTA, CAFTA, etc. Those are managed trade agreements)
- Americans have forgotten what the Constitution means, or never learned it in the first place. We were never supposed to have an all powerful federal government, sticking its nose into everything and literally blackmailing the states to do as the fed demands, to get some of their own money back. We were never meant to be an empire, or the world's police force.
- Americans have gone to sleep while our Supreme Court thinks it is within their realm to make law, rather than strictly interpret the Constitution as to the Founders intent. Why in heck are we allowing Kelo to stand? We should be screaming from the rooftops!! But no, apparently Americans have accepted that too and gone back to sleep.
- As a summary of several things that Americans have gone to sleep while government has done, please watch this speech by FOX's own Judge Andrew Napolitano. http://reason.tv/video/show/178.html
You may also want to read his new book, "A Nation of Sheep".

Anne- 2
- Americans need to stop accepting what pundits or so-called experts tell them about the economy and start doing their own research and frankly, just use their common sense. Right now, we have nothing more than monopoly money. It is no longer backed by a precious metal. What's more, the FED is printing it out of thin air. The government needs money? Oh, just borrow it from Red China or just go print some more. If people would really just stop and repeat that to themselves, most would see how foolish we have been to accept this hypocrisy all these years. Hey, next month when *you* run out of money, why don't ya just print some more up? LOL! Yet, this is exactly what we are allowing government to do. Ever stop to think what more money in the money supply does to prices, not to mention the money in your Savings? Hint: The more there is of something, the less it is worth. Prices rise and the value of our dollar, decreases. You are being robbed, every time the money supply is increased. Just the same as if someone broke into your house and stole it from you! Note: Guess what is happening, every time you hear that the interest rate has been decreased? BINGO. The money supply is being increased. Did you ever notice how the dollar index sinks down even more, after every one of these? http://www.stockcharts.com ($usd for ticker sym)

The gig is almost up. Our dollar has gone over the crest and is in terrible trouble. Dr. Paul understands this and has been warning us about this for years. He has the knowledge to turn this around. This empire-building and wild spending that our government has been doing HAS TO STOP and it has to stop right now. Otherwise, we are going to soon wake up and our dollar will have become like the ruble. Yes, it can and it IS, happening here. All empires come to an end. We were not meant to be an empire; we were meant to be a constitutional REPUBLIC! We'd better learn what that means darn quick.

Oops- typo
In my 3:25 AM post, I meant to say, Canada AND Mexico.

Anne -- on Excuses
quoth Anne: "Funny though, no matter what, when someone disagrees with paul, it's because they don't understand, or some other excuse!!!"

I've been reading exchanges back and forth about Ron Paul for some time now.

And seeing how often any given statement of Paul's is explained to any reasonable person's satisfaction, and yet the anti-Paul crowd continue to harp on those same non-issues, well, no wonder it seems people just refuse to understand.

It's like talking to liberals who keep harping about how the rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer, and how horribly racist white America is, and how the economy is going to hell in a hand-basket -- and we conservatives have to explain AGAIN, patiently and sometimes not, why and how their precious illusions are all so much smoke and mirrors.

As far as I'm concerned, Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate who even comes CLOSE to espousing the sort of limited government issues that conservatives hold dear.

OK, he's not perfect. Neither was Reagan, Gingrich, or Goldwater.

But, gosh-dang-it, we FINALLY have a candidate who is SO INCREDIBLY CLOSE to perfect, that I think you'd have to be crazy to vote for anyone else.

Let's face it. ALL of the other choices can easily be categorized as either Socialism or Socialism Lite. I don't think it'll matter in the long run if we win in Iraq but lose our Liberties in the bargain.

I have to say that the only thing that
to RP's response was a lack of addressing the enforcement side on employers. His can't find them all mantra is common amoung the politicians and is a sop to avoid insulting the legals who are already in Texas.

His stance is not as good as Fred's, but it is miles better than Rudy and McShame.

Ron Paul
John
I'm surprised at your question "But that right to citizenship is in the Constitution, isn't it?". I admit I didn't know either and had to look it up, but Ron is right about the Consitution. It does not have to be ammended! The law "Title 8" passed by the congress can be changed to disallow citizenship to people born of illegals. All it takes is for us to elect the right people and for them to revise Title 8 to exempt people that sneak in and give birth. I like you and now I like Ron Paul more.

It's Heartbreaking

Uncle Alba writes on Ron Paul (4:23 a.m. post): "But, gosh-dang-it, we FINALLY have a candidate who is SO INCREDIBLY CLOSE to perfect, that I think you'd have to be crazy to vote for anyone else."

You're right. He is close to perfect. But the problem is that his imperfection is a show-stopper.

I can only think of and handful of things that a president can do alone: (i) nominate federal judges (the Senate can only advise and consent; in cannot make its own selections); (ii) grant pardons; (iii) issue executive orders regarding the enforcement (or not) of existing laws; and (iv) serve as commander in chief of our military forces. Everything else requires the cooperation of Congress.

Sure, it's nice to have a president who agrees with you on issues such as immigration, abortion, taxes, or whether school buses need to stop at railroad crossings, but ultimately the president's role in these issues is limited to signing or vetoing legislation enacted by Congress.

Unfortunately, my (and I suspect much of the nation's) discomfort with Dr. Paul is on one of the core duties of the president -- wielding our military in a way that is best suited to the protection of our nation.

It's heartbreaking. Yeah, he's perfect .... except for that one overriding thing.

Middle Ground on Immigration Reform
I hope all the politicians running for President will show the courage required to find the middle ground on immigration reform in the U.S.

Please tell us what you stand for on one of the most complex issues facing America today. We are a nation of immigrants and if we intend on growing this country, the alternative is shrinking it, we need a comprehensive reform plan that takes into account border security as well as the benefits we have received from this growth of population and economy.

Wouldn't it be insane
if RP, the only one I hear espousing real conservatism in all areas of life, had to run as a 3rd party candidate? Kicked out of the Republican lot.

Yes, he is basically Libertarian, but he's not "over the edge Libertarian". He's just much closer to "maximum conservative".

Folks, I think we have a tremendous opportunity to have a one-term (too old for 2) conservative president that would govern on conviction, not polls. One that is uniting the your and the old, the democrat and republican.

For a nation on the brink, please consider that 4 years of RP could change reverse the trend away from what our country is supposed to be.

If you don't like everything he says, think about where you disagree with your favorite candidate now. Nit-picking can be done with all of the candidates.

This is the chance of a lifetime. While I realize RP will have limited success in getting most of what he wants accomplished in 4 years (with massive opposition in congress), he's the only one that will fight to eliminate programs and departments that we just expect to continue on forever with ever increasing funding needs.

I didn't know for the last decdade that a politician could have virtue anymore. I lumped all of them together as liers and arrrogant panderers. It's still hard to accept I may have been wrong. If I am, its only about 1 of them.
RP.

Hmmmm
I like his ideals of cutting off all benefits, because really, that in itself will tke away 50% of our problems, if not more. They would be less of a tax burden on all of us, our dwindling resources would blossom back, and most who came here for the free ride would have no incentive to stay.

But, we need a fence, and we need them to stop coming here in swarms, period. He says he finds the fense offensive, and that's all well and fine, but his public cries out for it. He will deny what the American people want based on his own personal preference.

So, cut off their freebies, but let them come, let them all come. This only solves 1/2 of our problem.

September12Republican
Very well said.

I don't know how RP would react in all situations, but I have heard him say 2 things.

First- he is for a strong national defense.

Second- he is for going after our immediate enemy (terrorists).

Beyond that, he is for greater intelligence capabilities and we doesn't want to constrain Isreal from doing what it needs to to survive.

While we must protect ourselves, we cannot continue to take away everyone else's right to do the same.

I've yet to hear from his own mouth what he would prefer to do when one of our allies calls upon us for military aid. Perhaps somone here can enlighten us?

All
If a socialist(hillary) or??, gets in the whitehouse, there won't be any ILLEGALS--they will be granted immediate citizenship.
Then if you are white, it won't matter a damn if you call yourself a dem. or rep.,because they won't need your vote.

This plan has been in effect since the early 90s and was started by bill clinton & al gore.

Shells
Hi there-

I did notice in the article that RP did vote for the bill which included a fence, even though he was personally offended by it. It sounded to me like he thought that it is a shame it's come to needing a fence and that he would prefer to not need one because our immigration structure was "fixed".

They Live Next Door....
Sorry Ron Paul, you make no sense.
Mexicans are our next door neighbors.
If your next door neighbor came to your house uninvited, ate your food, displaced your children, and demanded that you take care of his children, and graf them into your family tree via insurance and other inheritence benefits,
you would be out of your mind if you didn't tell him to "GO HOME! YOU WALKED OVER HERE. NOW IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO WALK HOME!"

Other thoughts on the fence
Should all of Europe have fences on each country's boarder? Do I really need a fence between me and Mexico, a country I visit as often as I can to relax on the beach and enjoy the hospitality? Am I worried about the same influx of Canadians flooding our country to have anchor babies? No.

I realize the fence is a quick fix and I support the fencing in San Diego & other areas to stop drup trafficing, kidnapping, possible entry points for terrorists & every other criminal activity. Am I losing sleep over no fence between me and Canada? No.

But as for immigration, the fence is a small part of the solution. It just has an immediate return on investment (on our southern border)and is a welcome first step. So we can try to do "nation building lite" by passing Nafta, or do "nation building heavy" & go in and rip out their corrupt politicians so Mexico can be the prosperous country it should be, given their many natural resources.

A third choice it to remove incentives for people to run away from their oun country so they can focus on fixing theirs. In the meantime, we are their ally. We are their friends. We are the welcome, big tippers, at their outstanding resorts.

Ain't Never Gonna Happen, Ron Baby
Naive, naive, naive. Although Ron Paul's prescriptions for dealing with the millions of illegals living in this country sound logical, he forgot that as President he would have to deal with their enables and apologists. Namely, the Democrat congress and big city mayors. His plans are simply not plausible.

It's every Democrats wet-dream to legalize twenty-million illegal aliens plus all of the their family members who will eventually be invited into the country. Democrats know that most all of these illegals will, when granted citizenship, register and vote as Democrats.

With their voting base increased by millions, the Democrat party will be one step closer to their goal of a totalitarian government for America.

So
We should just vote for a liberal democrat because its hopeless?

Great stuff
Ron Paul has it right. Instead of supporting a "cover" for the problem of immigration he actually wants to fix it at the core.

Our country has far too many entitlement programs, and they are being used by illegal aliens for their benefit.

It's like welfare...if you give more away, you'll have more people on welfare.

The peaceful solution to ending illegal immigration is to end the entitlement programs that keep them coming here. And we also need to deport anyone found to be here illegally.

Ron Paul is the only voice of real reason I've seen in a long, long time. He's great!

No what we need to do
is ramp up the punishment for hiring them. That is what AZ is doing and they are leaving the State in droves.

That is what RP was missing from his response. Anyone who has any common sense at all knows that a wall by itself is next to useless. Walls are designed to keep out and honest people and slow down the dishonest so that it takes fewer security people who stop them. A wall will do no good if there are NO security people.

HI Vic
RP wants to take some of the troops stationed overseas and use them at the border. He also said in the interview that he wants illegals sent home and that law enforcement needs to be able to ask for verification of citizenship.

Maybe not perfect, but a far cry better than what anyone else is doing. It may even turn out to be perfect depending on how you look at the problem. Are we needing a rapid influx of citizens to keep the SS ponzi scheme going a while longer or do we need all illegals gone yesterday to stop sucking up the welfare?

pandm writes
"This plan has been in effect since the early 90s and was started by bill clinton & al gore".

So they were prepared to make 59 tax-contributing states (50 of US + 9 Candian provinces--all except Quebec) support 32 welfare-sapping ones (Quebec + the 31 of Mexico)?

Fuzzy: paul SHOT HIMSELF IN THE FOOT...

AGAIN!!! I just re-read the column and all of a sudden it just jumped out at me...

"I find it [the fence] rather offensive."

WHAT??? OFFENSIVE???

I'm figuring that two more statements, and paul will have blown off both feet and one arm... right up to his elbow!

Way to go, paul!

As with every other topic: unrealistic
Ron Paul is a dreamer. He has a strong notion of what ought to be, and he says he's in favor of that, whatever it happens to be on whatever topic.

The problem is that he has not the slightest idea how to get from where we are now to where his head wants to go.

This becomes evident as you read his responses to Stossel. He knows that the welfare system is what the illegals are coming for (except they're not, they're coming to work). So his solution is "abolish the welfare state."

Does he say a single word about how he's going to accomplish this? Which programs he's going to end? What he's going to do with the people who are depending on those programs? What exceptions he'll allow? He's never thought about it any deeper than "End the welfare state."

People like him who don't have to accomplish anything practical. Heck, *I* could sign onto a petition to "end the welfare state." Sounds great, so long as you're not the one who actually has to approach the legislature with a proposal.

Ron Paul is a nice, honest, straightforward dreamer who doesn't have a clue. He's not qualified to be President. He's not qualified to run a small business, even.

Ron Paul
Ron Paul talks a great game. I like what he says and that he says them (note my first post here). But I've made it no secret in two previous pro-Ron Paul threads that Ron Paul is *NOT* the man to do the job. In fact, he doesn't *do* anything. He talks and votes. He's been in public office in the House of Representatives for at least 2 decades and what has he *done* to limit government? What has he *done* to secure the border? What has ne *done* to get the united States out of the united Nations? Has he even written and attempted to put on the floor of the house for debate *anything* to accomplish 8any* of his stated goals? 20 years is a very long time to *do* nothing.

Ron Paul - Loves those racists
I've also made no secret in the same two previous pro-Ron Paul threads (see my previous post) my misgivings with Ron Paul for not even caring to give back money donated to his campaign by white supremists. I've expressed my concern that by not giving it back or giving it to a pro-Jewish organization, he stood in danger of becoming a tool to the eugenic gift horse. I was told by a Ron Paul supporter that since Ron Paul himself does not support racist legislation and is not a racist (the latter is highly debatable but I still have NOT concluded that he is a racist) than accepting blood-eugenic money is OK.

Well in search of the last thread before this on where I posed the "big question" as to wether or not Ron Paul supporters would stand by their non-interventionist position had the United States never took up arms against the Third Reich and only learned of the deliberate executions of 6 million Jews in Nazi death camps, I came across the photo in the following link. It was posted here on Townhall.com just today so it very well be a recent photo. If not than I'd like to know why the Ron Paul campaign previously acted like they didn't know who Don Black, the white supremist donor to the Ron Paul campaign, was.

The link after this was a result of a google search on the photo. I came across a blog which has comments made by Eric Dondero, former senior Ron Paul staff member of 10 years. It's a good read. eric represents a wing of Libertarians which is much, much, much, more compatible to my views. Basically they are very pro-military and very supportive in killing jihadists on their own soil. I prefer that to waiting until they attack us on our soil.

Ron Paul - Racist Photo
Let me qualify my link to a photo with Ron Paul and Don Black standing hapily together. If it is at all doctored than I'll immediately retract my posting the link. Obviously I can't remove the link but I will denounce my posting it if it is a fake.

Ron Paul Percent of Vote - New Hampshire
Here is Professor's analysis on Ron Paul (RP):

Iowa 40% dems, 40% reps, 20% indies
RP was polling about 5% of reps, 30% indies.
Say half the 20% indies vote rep, half vote dem.
(40 * .05 + 10 * .30))/ 50 = 10.0% in Iowa (he got it)

New Hampshire 40% indie, say 30% dems and 30% reps.
RP polling about 8% of reps in NH, say polling at 30% for indies.
Say half the 40% indies vote rep, half vote dem.
(30 * .08 + 20 * .30))/ 50 = 16.8% in NH

Stupid Canard
"People are hurting"

No one is hurting who hasn't created his/her own situation. We all should be sick of this lazy canard that is thrown into the mix in order to manipulate an emotional response/reaction in order to extract action toward an irresponsible choice.

NO ONE IS HURTING. Get over it.

"I find it rather offensive."

Always question the agenda of the person who is/wants to be offended or insulted - it's highly likely they are getting ready to make YOU responsible for their choices and those that have the integrity to challenge those choices.

Cowards are those who like to be offended and insulted. Get over it.

Fuzzy visits to Mexico Beaches
I read an article today from Reuters that said that tourism is down significantly between San Diego and Rosarita Beach due to the number of violent at-gun-point robberies by bandits pretending to be police, flashing lights, etc. The article further pointed-out that the Mexican Police have, as yet in 14 months, made even one arrest! Keep visiting Mexico for us, Fuzzy. Let us know how accurate the reports are about the lack of safety kayakers, hotel visitors, weekend tourists, etc.

As a US born citizen in CO, and educated at a number of Universities, but completed my Bachelor's at SDSU, I used to work for Maxell in San Ysidro (suburb of San Diego), some years ago right out-of college, and because I also spoke Spanish, I would daily visit the maquiladora on the outskirts of Tijuana. I loved working with the people in Mexico, but the corruption of their governments is so intrinsic and long-standing, I fear without major financial withholding from the US to the major six families . . . my move away will continue to be the best, safest decision I ever made.

While RP's idea to dis-incentivize illegal immigration with removal of welfare programs is a good start, as I see it, there needs to be a second and third pronged approach, as well. Build more fence, with more Border control/ agents, and third, strike an agreement with Mexico's government that we will withhold our yearly "gift/ funding" equal to the amount that the Mexican government does not provide jobs, and services for their own people, and show real evidence of limiting the illegal crossing into the US of their own citizenry.

see next post...

Dave continues . . .
No other nation in the world allows "anchor babies" to be defined as Citizen's of that country of birth. Their nationality is tied to their parents, until the parents seek citizenship in any other country but their own. Why are we the only nation to permit "anchor babies" automatic Citizenship??? Even International Law, that some of the Supreme's like to cherry-pick for standing, doesn't hold-up.

Making changes to the Supreme's interp of the 14th amendment regarding Title 8 (anchor babies)is going to take YEARS before it can be reviewed. And then, even IF it get's there, be rest assured, some slip-n-fall attorney's will seek financial repatriation like they did/ continue to do for the families of many generations past slaves. It's a pandora's box. If we're smart, we'll teach our own children about the US Constitution (which Scouting does but NOT my kids school!??!?), it's values, and meaning. The majority of the rights lie inthe hands of the States OR the individual citizen's . . . NOT in the Federal Government, . . . and then just say . . NO!!

see last post . . .

Dooze finishes
RP has some good ideas, but lacks persuasive tact. As a Congressman, he's not without guilt for the situation we currently find ourselves (value of the dollar market, immigration, government intrusion). He's not been very successful at communicating the state of the State, nor persuading his fellow Congressmen to see the dangers and convincing them to change their voting habits. He'd be better to stay in Congress and keep fighting, than to be stuck as a lame-duck President.

I also still have major concerns with his strict libertarian stand on foreign affairs. The issue of leaving the Iraqi standing without our help is paramount to the incredibly stupid pull-out from Vietnam from our allies, the Hmong people. Have to give it to Bush for not allowing Congress to micro-manage another war. The devestation of life would be a serious return to the last days of our Nation in Cambodia, Vietnam, and those sourrounding nations. RP's policy would be akin to the same thing, . . . just for a different reason than the Dem's! True peace may never be achieved in the ME, but we can at least have more than one ally, as opposed to none.
