Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"Don't bother debating with John Stossel and the libertarians. They are worst than Republicans."

That's a comment from climateprogress.org, Joe Romm's blog about global warming. It was a reaction to C-SPAN's coverage of an Independent Women's Forum (IWF) discussion on energy policy that I moderated last week.

Romm was the star of the event. I didn't recognize him until he reminded me I'd interviewed him a decade ago. Then I remembered he was "toilet man." That's what I called him privately when he was the energy department bureaucrat under President Clinton who defended the government's demand that all of us buy "low-flow" showerheads and "water-saving" toilets.

I did a "Give Me a Break" segment on that for "20/20" mocking the endless rule-making process, which somehow concluded that exactly 1.6 gallons is all that every toilet needs. I interviewed people who were so unhappy with their new toilets that they were combing junkyards for old ones, or going to Canada to buy them, because 1.6 gallons doesn't always get the job done. Homeowners and apartment managers kept telling meme, "The toilets don't work!"

"They do now," Romm said to me last week. Manufacturers eventually made 1.6 gallons flush successfully, proving, he suggested, that my "Give Me a Break" was misguided and that government rules spur improvements. Now, he says, we need to save the earth by passing rules that restrict carbon use.

The fact that it took years for manufacturers to solve the flushing problem, at great expense to consumers, and that during that period many people had to flush several times, wasting lots of water, and that the one-size-fits-all rule applied to all of America, forcing flushing embarrassment and lousy showers on people in Vermont and other places that have plenty of water and don't need to conserve, and the water savings were less than 6 percent of what farms use every day for irrigation -- none of that bothers Romm.

He now works at the Center for American Progress, a lefty think tank where policy wonks seem to think that government telling us what to do is the solution to many problems.

Of course, simply privatizing water distribution, allowing its price to rise or fall as supply and demand warrant, would have been a far fairer solution. But President Clinton's energy department didn't want to bring in the evil free market.

Now, "let the market work" is a slogan among the segment of global-warming catastrophe crowd that advocates carbon "cap and trade."

I'm all for trade.

But there's less talk about the "cap" part. That's the government force part.

Will chimney police come to your home? Will Al Gore tell us when we can run our air- conditioners? Will a federal officer be stationed at every factory? Romm was honest enough to admit, "I am certainly not here saying that this is going to be a free lunch."

No, there isn't. If the global climate change hysterics take over, we will pay and pay.

And to what end? In Europe, where panicky politicians have forced cap and trade on their constituents in what John O'Sullivan calls "the universal sign of conspicuous virtue," energy now costs more, but most countries still have failed to meet their Kyoto carbon-emission targets.

I did have the satisfaction of ending the IWF panel by reminding the audience of global-warming guru James Hansen's prediction years ago, that New York City's West Side Highway would soon be "under water."

Romm blogged that the prediction is "needless to say ... nothing Hansen ever said."

But he did say it, and one of Romm's fans even corrected Romm on the blog: "Chad" wrote: "I tracked down that quote from Hansen.... [H]e said ... 'the West Side Highway will be underwater.' ... [T]here would also be a drought and the trees on the median strip would be dead."

I just looked. The highway's still there. The trees are healthy, too.

Conservation
We have become a wasteful nation. A throw away society. My parents lived through the Great Depression and instilled into me and my siblings to appreciate what ever we had, be it clothes or car etc.
I agree aurorawatcher, Gore jumps on the latest trend train to be seen, heard and make a buck off of peoples fears. Nice guy........The "Do as I say not as I do" pontifiacting blow hard.
Regarding the fluorescent lights, there is a place for them but I believe we shouldn't be forced, by another law invading our homes, to use only that type of lighting. Hello, Big Brother !

Yes, burning wood produces emissions
So does burning oil and coal. Even if you have an all-electric house with electric baseboard, emissions will have to be generated to heat or cool your home, unless you get your electricity from solar, wind, geothermal or nuclear power. I am not all that worried about producing emissions because I think human-caused global warming is a con job. I am much more interested in making wise use of the resources God gave us. We shouldn't waste. There are ways to conserve and do so wisely without substantially damaging the lifestyle we enjoy. Those are good things. Al Gore, on the other hand, is a ridiculous hypocrit, which is not a good thing.

Vic, you're not using the right florescent bulbs. Trust me! We've got a couple for reading that put out WAY more light than any incandescent and they use a whole lot less electricity.

ALL: a Note on Double-Posting
I've noticed that the most recent change to the Townhall website leaves your message in-tact in the Comments box, even after a successful posting.

Previously, after a successful post, the Comments box would be cleared.

I think this is why there has been this rash of double-postings. People see their words are still there, and mistakenly believe it didn't go through. So they hit "Post" again.

So, this is just a note for people to be a little more careful. Check to see if indeed your comments were posted before posting again.

Conservation can make sense.
Conversation can make economic sense. The compact fluorescent is very economical if dimming isn't required, the start-up temperature is high enough, the amount of light is sufficient, it fits in the fixture, there's no harp in the way...

Unfortunately government mandated 'conservation' never makes sense. They will stifle new technology by mandating a narrow choice, listen to lobbyists, try to achieve some other objective, exclude themselves, tax whatever they can.

If government regulated operating systems, we'd all be using DOS 2.0.341d(f)(h) sub operating system 6.7.8(a) except on Tuesday and alternating Thursday unless its the third Thursday of the month.

David Austin
You call Vic an idiot because he worked for a living at the same place for 30 years. I guess being a "professional student" or jumping from job to job or better yet, figure out how to collect unemployment/welfare,is more admirable than working to make a living. Hmmm, I suppose Mr. Austin agrees that illegal aliens are needed to do work HE won't do. Get off of your pedestal!
America was built with hard working legal immigrants who wanted the best home environment to raise their families AND to escape the oppressive governments of their homelands. But the way things are going, we'll soon be under the thumb of a dictator standing in food lines or to buy those fluorescent bulbs....

David Austin vs. Vic
quoth David Austin:

quoting Vic: "I worked for a public utility generating electricity for 30 years."

David Austin: "Well, there's your problem. You're an idiot."

WHOA!! WHAT A PUT-DOWN! HOLY MACKEREL!! BOOM BABY!!

GIVE THAT MAN FOUR STARS! THE MOST CREATIVE AD HOMENIM THIS SIDE OF MICHAEL MOORE! (and believe me, one side of Michael Moore covers a LOT of ground!)

Now then -- having gotten that out of the way -- perhaps you can enlighten us with a few facts to support your arguments?

"Consumers Union"
I noticed them starting to go left years ago when they kept urging people not to buy SUVs because "they tip over". YEAH! If you drive like a moron, you're going to tip it over! DUH! The last time I wanted to look something up in Consumer Reports, I went to the library and was able to find the information I wanted without contributing to the left. They do good work if you take into account their Political Correctness malarky.

I'd Soon Fix the 1.6 Gallon Failure
With a 5 gallon bucket.

Vic
>I worked for a public utility generating electricity for 30 years.

Well, there's your problem. You're an idiot.

Oops
Darn this dial up, I double posted. Thought the first one didn't go through...

aurorawatcher writes
"I use my wood stove a lot because wood is cheaper and renewable unlike oil."

Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't burning wood create some sort of air pollution too ?

There is way too much government for our OWN GOOD being jammed down our throats and I appreciate John Stoessel bringing alot of the "bad things" out in the open that our great "law makers" try to get passed us. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Vic for your info, always enlightening. I love it when you shut down the likes of David Austin.

"Common Sense Isn't" So true, so true...

aurorawatcher writes
"I use my wood stove a lot because wood is cheaper and renewable, unlike oil."

Doesn't burning wood release "emissions" into the atmosphere ?? Just wondering.

Regarding fluorescent bulbs, toilets etc, why are we being told, by Big Brother, what we can or cannot do. This scares me...

Where HAS common sense gone. I saw this posted:"Common sense isn't"...so true, so true.

Stossel
Unca Alby... Thanks,I thought so.

still interested. We are about to head to utah for some R & R at the natl parks. let's try and get this worked oput later in sept.

Hey there wildwest
If you have an interest in the model of the Berlin Wal, let me know and I'll find a way to get in touch.

libs and energy saving devices.
libs like to force their ideas on the country. Whenever another program is developed that uses less energy, less water, less gas less air, etc, all libs should be required to purchase same or adjust their lives to use the new gizmos. Those of use who believe in good old fashioned devices can continue to use them as our conscientious libs friends will give us our carbon offsets.

David Austin
I don't need to watch a vidio from some crackpot. I worked for a public utility generating electricity for 30 years. UNlike you I know what I am talking about.

Go nuclear
No Co2 no scrubber

Vic
why don’t you watch a video of Physicist Dr. Klaus Lackner from the “earth institute” at Columbia: http://www.earthinstitute.columbia.edu/crosscutting/energy.html).

Learn something for a change.

David Austin
You obviously know nothing about generating elctricity. With the "right" kind of scrubbers you can remove CO2. There are NO SCRUBBERS as they have not been invented yet. The only thing anyone has come up with so far is discharging stack gasses through a chemical pile that absorbs CO2 something like a disicant. Not only is that almost impossible to do and very expensive, but when the chemical has all been reacted you have to get rid of it in a manner that keeps the CO2 in it.

And besides that, who is going to pay for these nonexistent scrubbers, you?

Worse than Republicans?
I choose to take that as a compliment. All Libertarians do and say is everything that the Republicrat and Demoblicans refuse to acknowledge - and we need a WHOLE lot more of that brand of honesty! Stossel, I love ya, don't go changin'!

clyde -- on Stossel
He *was* one of them way back.

Stossel
Don't worry about soothsayer,he is but another of the court jesters. Christopher Parisho, thanks, that was a cool post! The libs hate it when Stossel pokes'em in the eye. They thought he was one of them way back.

conservation is a waste of time
We'll not completely - but pretty close. Instead, we should be focusing on cheap clean electricity, not decreasing our consumption. Even if you don't believe in GW - cheap clean electricity could ultimately make our economy independent from the Arab nations. That alone is fair justification.

Check out my blog on this issue: http://whorledview.com/2007/05/22/will-energy-conservation-ever-make-any-difference/

"not ashamed to be right"
The anti-f-bulb argument (mercury disposal) was debunked long ago, yet I'm sure you'll keep spouting it at every chance. The fact is that a magnitude more of mercury is vented to the atmosphere through the burning of coal in order to light 1 incandescent over the life of the f-bulb than is contained in an f-bulb. Besides, that much higher volume of mercury due to incandescent light use is going straight into your drinking water when it rains. Knowledge is power, and the truth shall set you free.

RE: not ashamed to be right writes:
You make a valid point.

I'd counter with;

As technology such as StarTech's Plasma Conversion Waste Disposal comes on-line and becomes more frequently used, hazardous waste will become less of an issue.

For more on StarTech's Plasma Conversion technology go to: http://www.startech.net/ read the FAQ and watch the video. I found about this myself just a few months ago thanks to; http://www.popsci.com/popsci/

Gimme a Break
I wish the Feds were as interested in saving our tax dollars as they are in saving water. Our toilets would flush and we'd be swimming in dollars.

RE: aurorawatcher writes:
I agree that conservation can be good. Like most things, taking it to extremes is bad.

True, carbon credits are a scam. Anyone that warns of global catastrophe, doesn't practice what they preach, uses credits to offset their consumption, and sells credits (or owns stock in a credit selling venture) is a modern day snake oil salesman and a hypocrite.

I too use florescent bulbs. I began using the traditional ones in my garage many years ago. Recently I tried compact ones (that fit in a standard light fixture) in the most used lights in my house. As other incandescent bulbs have needed replacing I've replaced them with the compact florescent ones, mostly to save on my electric bill because they do use less energy. Not all florescent brands are alike. Some brands I've tried have not worked well at all.

I understand some people prefer incandescent light quality or are sensitive to the florescent flicker (well made ones have much less flicker). As the quality improves, prices come down, and the compact fluorescents I own need replacing I may even switch to the LED lights because they last even longer and use even less energy.

As for automobiles, I have to option to drive economical vehicles. In fact I drive my motorcycle when weather permits to have fun and use less fuel.

I regulate my thermostat depending on the season. Up to 80 degrees if the humidity is low and down to 60 degrees in the winter. In the winter a sweater or a fire in the fire place costs less.

Water saving toilets were not in my house when I bought it, but if I ever remodel I will look at them and see if the potential savings is worth the cost. I pay maybe $20 a month for my cities water sewer service.

Conserving can be good as long as it is voluntary and suits individual needs. Mandating it, or outlawing things like incandescent light bulbs or charcoal grills is the wrong way to go about it. Make it a financial reward to do so and people will flock to it.

aurorawatcher,
when it does come time to replace one of the
f-bulbs in your home, remember to dispose of it at the hazardous waste site:) Also, think about the millions of people who cannot read English who will be tossing the f-bulbs in the regular trash either not knowing better or not caring. This will be joined by the dumping of used motor oil and antifreeze as well (well, the containers anyway and whatever portion does not run down the street!)

Conservation is a good thing, but falling for the ridiculous claims of the global warming hysterics is another matter entirely.

global warming
global warming=pilt town man. when my mom was a little girl in the 30tys the n.y. papers were screeching global warming because the tempitures were very high in 1934.there was no undue tempiture rise then or now.the n.y. papers were whinning about a new ice age in the 70dys it did't happen.the only differance now is sissy boy polititions falling all over them selves to show their doing some thing about nothing.

aurorawatcher
>Carbon credits are a scam. If GW really existed, carbon credits wouldn't do anything to stop it

On the contrary, about half of the carbon emissions in the US is due to electricity generation, and most all of the carbon contribution can be eliminated by the right scrubbing methods and piped back into the earth. I won't go into the science, you can look it up yourself.

It has been estimated to cost around $0.03/KW, which is about a 30% increase in utilities for most Americans. That is a pretty hefty increase, but for the time being it's probably the cheapest currently available path to zero-emissions for electricity generation.

The prudent approach isn't ignorant
I'm not suggesting we accept GW and stop researching whether or not it is even real? In fact, if we start spending money on it then I think there's all the more need to justify that expense with data over the upcoming years.

Hopefully (and I mean that honestly), we'll find that the -0.7degree drop last century is all within the noise, and prove that carbon levels as attributed by man are indeed nothing to get worried about.

It seems that there is enough motivation by the oil industry to fund such research critical of GW on it's own. We don't have to worry about that. It's not like the oil industry is a 98lb weakling that will be over-run by a small handful of tree huggers.

And again, I'll go back to my previous suggestion that renewables have a spotty record, especially with regard to payoffs, because energy research spending has been outrageously mismanaged. If I hear another politician mention the H2 economy as if it's worth anything I'm going postal. If it was managed properly then you'd think much more highly of renewable energy and give a policy of prudence the benefit of the doubt.

To: David Austin
You wrote: "The only statistics you've given back is 10 years old...".

Incorrect. Didn't you read the comment about the Bray & von Storch study? Only 9.4% strongly agreed, and more strongly disagreed! If you want the full set of numbers, here you go. Remember that "1" = "Strongly agree that climate change is mostly the result of anthropogenic causes", while "7" = strongly disagee.

1: 9.4%
2: 25.3%
3: 21.1%
4: 14.2% (this is "uncertain")
5: 8.5%
6: 11.3%
7: 9.7%

So around 56% of the climatologists agree to some level, 14% say they're uncertain, and the other 30% disagree to some extent.

This is from 2004, mind you.

Further, a fellow name of Schulte published a paper THIS YEAR extending the work of Naomi Oreskes (2004). Oreskes had said she examined 928 paper abstracts and found "NONE" that disagreed with the "consensus". According to Oreskes, 75% of the papers agreed either explicitly or implicitly with the "consensus", with the others taking no position. Her study has been criticized; she evidently missed some. Schulte examined 528 paper abstracts from 2004-2007. He found that 45% agreed explicitly or implicitly with the "consensus", 48% took no position, and 6% rejected the "consensus".

So in other words, the trend is starting to be a TURNING AWAY from the so-called "consensus", either not buying it fully or rejecting it. This fits with the average global temperature being flat since 1998, while CO2 concentrations have increased by 4%. The data looks like it's going in the wrong direction, so real scientists--not media scientists--are starting to re-examine matters.

(2)
It may sound paranoid, but look at the European Union were one has no danger of being fired from work and no hope of ever becoming your own boss.

Remember the Nazis, Falangist and Fascist were all Socialist who advocated absolute collective power of the state over all branches of society and HATED quasi-laissez-faire economic policies of Classic Liberalism.

Fascists were most vocal in their opposition to finance capitalism, interest charging, and profiteering. Some fascists, particularly Nazis, considered finance capitalism a "parasitic" Jewish conspiracy.

According to sociologist Stanislav Andreski, fascist economics "foreshadowed most of the fundamental features of the economic system of Western European countries today: the radical extension of government control over the economy without a wholesale expropriation of the capitalists but with a good dose of nationalisation, price control, incomes policy, managed currency, massive state investment, attempts at overall planning (less effectual than the Fascist because of the weakness of authority)."[33] Politics professor Stephen Haseler credits fascism with providing a model of economic planning for social democracy.[34]

Seig Heil Hillary!!!

We defeated Hitler but lost to François Mitterrand.

Wake Up!!!
There is only one name for Political Correcteness, Multiculturalism and Packaged Ideologies.

A "Packaged Ideology" is one in which you must accept the totality of positions.

Namely, to be a Democrat you must be for gay marriage, against the war in Iraq, for global warming, etc.

The rejection of any of the goals of the movement makes you into a bad person who needs to be re-educated or, destroyed.

The name is: Totalitarianism.

The institutional regulation of individual ethical believes and behavior and the restriction on free discussion and criticism.

Socialist are not people that simply disagree but people that are determined to curtail your freedom by any means necessary. Ask Janet Reno.

The sin of the Republicans is they continue to simply agree to disagree with people that instead must be defeated. Republicans live in the 18th century like if we never have known of Stalin, Mao, Hitler or, Mussolinni.

The goal of the Democrats is the establishment of a Mussolinean single mass party were the elites would have total monopoly over the culture, the ideas and the mass media in concert with the international corporations and a populace which is completely dependent on the state; from transportation, to health care, to employment and housing.

I can still remember
"Zero Population Growth". It's theory was that all of our ills were caused by having too many people in the USA. NOW, the big push is to throw open the borders & let any one that wants to, come on in.

I love it when the nut-job's agendas butt heads, but they NEVER solve any problems!

Quick math
Cost of florescent bulb -- about $8 for a two pack at Walmart (in Alaska, where everything is more expensive).

Cost of incandescent bulb - about $4 for a four pack at Walmart (same disclaimer).

Replacement rate for incandescent bulbs where it's dark six months out of the year -- every three months.

Replacement rate for florescent bulbs under same conditions? I'll let you know when I replace one. It's been five years for the first one.

Electric usage drop? Quick math says I've saved about $25 a month on electricity in January using florescents over incandescents. That's $300 a year.

And, I don't have to climb on a chair to replace the bulbs but every half-decade or so. Hmm?

So, I would require 25 i-bulbs for 1 f-bulb if the f-bulb burns out every five years. That's $20 for the i-bulbs and $4 or $5 for the f-bulb.

What are your objections to f-bulbs other than Al Gore likes them?

aurorawatcher
I agree with you. I tried the fluorescent bulbs for lamp sockets and they just don't put out enough light to read by. In addition they don’t work very well in high humidity situations like we have here when the house is open (spring/fall).

I conserve where it makes sense to and I don’t worry about the rest. I currently drive so little that I had to take my truck in for an oil change at 3K miles because it had been over a year since I changed the oil and had not reached the 4K mark.

In the summer I keep the thermostat set to maintain between 79 and 80 on my digital thermometer (because my wife is cold natured).

Oops
A little typo:

And as far as climatologists is concerned,

Should read:

And as far as climatologists are concerned,

I changed my wording and forgot to change the verb. Sorry about that.

Addendum

Yes, the climatologists do have many who espouse AGW, but to a large degree that is because gov't grants are much more likely to go those who support bureaucrat's pet beliefs, so the AGW crowd gets more cash. And, like all humans, climatologists are prone to act in their own self interest, even if it means compromising their integrity. So, whether consciously or unconsciously, they tend to start embracing AGW as that is where the money is. Not to mention that universities tend to hire those who get the best grants, so those who espouse AGW, and get the most cash, also get the best posts at universities and thus appear to be more "expert" than those with integrity who have to pass up grants and thus get less illustrious positions.

99% of scientists?
I love the idea that "99% of scientists" agree on global warming. I suppose if you think that any "scientist" is qualified to comment on global warming, maybe this is right, though even then the number is probably high.

Of course, what does someone who specializes in tensile strength of composites or studies human behavior know about global warming? And why is their opinion superior to mine? They are no more expert in climatology than any other idiot off the street.

And as far as climatologists is concerned, they seem to more often oppose AGW theories than support. Oh, sure, those who depend on gov't funding for a livlihood often mouth AGW platitudes to get their funding, but the more scrupulous seem to admit that AGW is a load of hysterical garbage. Just check out the opinions of american association of state climatologists, they came out uniformly AGAINST AGW hysteria.

Of course, if you want to rely on civil engineers, psychotherapists (both are "scientists" after all!), rock stars and Al Gore, (and those climate researchers who get grants by being pro-AGW) then you can assemble an impressive list of such "experts", but I think I will stick with the climatologists, who seem to have a sizable percentage who question this AGW dogma.

Just an honest observation
I am a conservative, but I also believe in conservation ... when it makes sense.

Human beings were meant to be good stewards of the planet God gave us. That would include not over-using our resources.

Carbon credits are a scam. If GW really existed, carbon credits wouldn't do anything to stop it.

My SUV is heavy enough to stand up to Alaskan roads, so it makes sense not to buy a tin-can car. If I lived where the roads were good, I'd own something smaller and more fuel-efficient. What I would save in gas I would spend on replacing my car here and that makes no sense.

Florescent bulbs give a good clear light that mimic sunlight, a plus in Alaska. I haven't replaced a f-bulb since we started putting them in five years ago. I've replaced incandesent bulbs about every three months. F-bulbs save money and hassle in the long run and my electric usage has gone down. I do, however, use incandescents in cold locations (the porch, the garage) because f-bulbs don't function well in the cold. Again, conservation should make sense.

My furnace is tuned up every year because that saves fuel, which saves money. I use my wood stove a lot because wood is cheaper and renewable, unlike oil.

Our low-flush toilet needs to be flushed two or three times while our full-flush one needs to be flushed once. We're looking for a used full-flush toilet.

Conservation is not an evil liberal plot. It is a conservative idea not to waste your resources. Mandating conservation rarely works, but people should consider it simply because it makes sense.

Conservation makes sense -- except those times when it doesn't.

ersec1
You're welcome.

The Colonel
They operate off of a motion detector like the ones that operate yard lighting. You have to adjust them for sensitivity. The ones we had at work (before I retired) flushed when you entered the stall, flushed when you sat down, flushed when you leaned forward to wipe, flushed when you stood up, and finally flushed when you turned around to leave. What was funny was that they were installed to limit water going into a septic system we operated because we were nearing our NPDES permit limts. I suspect that we probably then exceeded the limits.

Hey Colonel
They dont flush until they sense motion stop wiggling around hope you havent bumped shoes with anyone :-)

correction ...
Renewables have been given a bad name as being expensive by a corrupt lobbying system that has spent all the energy funding on stupid things like PV solar, H2 economy, and other things that are super costly and make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

You took me out of context
I said "it seems like 99%". The word "seems" indicates that I know it might not be the case. You quoted be as if I was adamant that 99% of all scientists believed in GW.

The only statistics you've given back is 10 years old, and even then as many as 63% (44% + 17%) considered it was possible if not likely. As I understand it in the last 10 years those attitudes among climatologists have changed dramatically given massive amount of recent research data.

Again, I'm not even 100% sure of GW myself, but I do believe it's smart to 1) consider what the bulk of the experts say now (not 10 years ago), and 2) exercise prudence with regard to things of critical importance ... like the future of the planet.

Will it cost a ton of money to exercise prudence? Yes, I know it will, but as far as I can tell the most promising technologies (distributed geothermal like waterfurnace, solar thermal, Bussard's polywell, etc) are largely ignored and unfunded. Renewables have been given a bad name as being expensive by a corrupt lobbying system that has spend all the funding on stupid things like PC solar, H2 economy, and other things that are super costly and make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Not so fast
While many complain about the 1.6 toilets, we have had two of them since June of 1998. Most of the time 1.6 gal. does the job. When you need more water to flush the contents away, just hold the handle down until all is well. Maybe that's why the Kohler Company called this model, "Wellworth/Highline." I can't speak for other brands, except that the "automatic" flushers in airports and other places are just plain silly. I still haven't figured out how to keep them from flushing before I even get up.

Vic
just wanted to thank you for that comment to ed-d-red! LOL! notice, he did not chime in after being laid out! love it!
Thank God for Mr Stossel. Not only is he right but he makes you laugh while you learn the truth.
'Toilet man'needs a good flushing. Hanson and his hockey stick are a joke!

LOL, Shower with a friend!
That brings back memories.

I grew up in California where the “water conservation” craze hit before it went national in the 90's.

I had an English teacher in 10th grade who was an Eco nut and had all kids of environmental material plastered all over her class room. In the process of teaching English she would almost always find a way to incorporate environmental issues in the lessons.

One day on the second semester she gave us an assignment to do a report on current events. Even then I was a bit of a smart @$$ and decide to do my report on “water conservation”.

I used the environmentalists information to prepare my report. I included all their reasoning for conservation and at the end their suggestions of how to conserve water. They included low flow toilets, shower heads, faucets, taking short or less frequent showers, washing your car less often, watering the lawn less often and in the early morning to prevent evaporation before the soil could soak the water up.

Instead of turning in our reports we were going to read them to the class, and we had a week to complete the assignment and prepare to present it. This gave me an opportunity to add my opinion in the way I knew best.

The day of the presentation I could see my teacher was bursting with pride as I read my report. That is till I read the last paragraph.

"I live in an apartment so I have no lawn to water. I don't have a car so I can't was it less often. So in an effort to conserve water and do my part I intend do shower with friends, so ladies, meet me in the womens locker room right after class. I'll scrub everyones backs, and fronts too."

The class room broke out in applause and cheers.

After that the teacher didn't mention the environment, or had us give any more oral reports without her reading and approving the report before hand.

You're right on all but possibly number 1. It would be more accurate to say that the "average global temperature" has increased slightly during the past 100 years. With the "tinkering" that has been done by NASA it is possible that we are now in a cooling cycle and don't know it because NASA keeps changing the K-factors.

Redhead

Yeah, given the way the Gore crowd emits CO2 I would bet the anti-dam crowd goes to a manmade lake every summer. I can remember some nut group when I was out there wanting to drain and remove some lake in Northern CA to restore it to "nature" and it was a source of water for the Bay Area. We were already on restricted water use and they were calling for removal of a reservoir.

Methane
I wonder, with there be fart police?

I mean, what if I have dinner at a Mexican restuarant and emit more than my share of methane?

Will there be a person that goes around and measures flatulance? Will there be a fart tax?

These are important questions...

Stossel
is the man.

No one, but no one calls out the politically correct knuckleheads like Stossel. He exposes all the lies and falsehoods plaguing our society like turning on the light and watching the roaches skitter under the fridge.

He is the most important person in journalism today because of his courage to take on subjects like this.

Bravo...

Vic
It’s that dam methane!

Also, good quote from the article:
“The 10th annual Riversymposium, Australia's largest river management conference, brings around 500 delegates from 40 countries to Brisbane this week to discuss river health, damming practices, drought and climate change.”

I assume they’re all going to swim there…

You hit the nail on the head.

Funny how Al Gore owns the company selling "carbon offsets".

Funny how when asked by Sen. Inhofe if he would change his own gluttonous energy consumption from the 20 times of a normal household, Al Gore refused to make that pledge.

Funny how the "debate is over" before it even began.

Lastly, it's funny how we were supposed to be in another ice age by now according to hysterical scientists 30 years ago....

Please define the argument
1.Averge global warming is increasing this is fact
2.Humanity impact on warming unknown or less than 1/10%
3.Warming/cooling is a natural cyclic event ice age to temperate over and over again
4.Natural events such as volcanoes, sun, lightning affect atmosphere orders of magnitude more than humans
5.Cost of affecting human impact enomous NO valid ROI
6.When not a significant impact to society should we reduce human impact? Sure why not.

Bottom line the argument is skewed or purposely miss stated. In my opinion this is being done purely to obtain (extort) funding from the public

It is refreshing to see an article about toilets that isn't about a certain Idaho senator.

To: Chicaree
I did my research and I am profoundly unconvinced.

Point-by-point:

1. Drought in Australia. If they did as poorly with this one as they did in 2002, then I don't think much of this recent drought. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology supposed claimed 2002 was "the worst drought ever". Right, their own data shows them wrong.

http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/silo/reg/cli_chg/timeseries.cgi

2002 had 340.56 mm of rain continent-wide. But 1961
had 336.33 mm and 1905 had only 320.35 mm. So, if the Aussie BoM is saying this--I remain unconvinced.

2. US Midwest flooding. Are you talking about this year? If so, the 1993 Midwest floods dwarf it. 1993, 50 dead and 563 counties were declared disaster areas. This year? 18 dead and a mere 17 counties declared disaster areas. Also, according to NOAA, "The flood of June 1844 is considered the greatest known in the lower Missouri Basin." CATCH THAT? 1844! Well before the majority of CO2 emissions.

3. Methane is red herring. Global methane emissions stabilized a decade ago.

4. Category 5 hurricanes in the gulf? Didn't you HEAR? Right after the Katrina hysteria, a group of hurricane experts issued a paper saying:
"Moreover, the evidence is quite strong and supported by the most recent credible studies that any impact in the future from global warming upon hurricane will likely be QUITE SMALL."

So, I suggest YOU go back and do some more CAREFUL research.

Climate Change
chicaree, 99%? Where do you find ridiculous things like this drivel?
Myth is always easer to believe then truth. One has to have the courage to grow up and seek the truth. While you are letting go of the phony Global Warming thing, let go of that Santa thing as well.

Here is the latest from another
group of idiotic fruitcakes. This group hates ALL dams and wants them all torn down. They have a new unique argument that they are trying to get the media to carry out for the. "Dams cause global warming" because of all the rotting vegetation and fish in the water.

LOL, if that's true the "two leaf" proposition above will have to go, also the "red cob, white cob, red cob solution.

But hey, the cob solution will still save that 1.6 gallon flush!

sorry for the double post.

Our friends have taken conservation to a whole new level. Instead of two toilet sheets per person, they utilize recycled fallen leaves in place of paper. They tried to keep to the two leaf formula but often required three and even resorted to four on one occasion. They found that soft live leaves worked much better than the brittle dead leaves of autumn. However, they soon defoliated their entire front yard. But that is old history, sadly they abandoned the whole experiment earlier this year when they inadvertently gathered some poison ivy leaves.

CLIMATE CHANGE
You guys need to get off your couch and look at what is happening around the world. You know how to use a computer, so google, drought in Australia, Or how about drought in the Amazon rainforest, flooding in the mid west, methane release as permafrost melts in the Arctic. (For the ignorant, methane is a greenhouse gas that is 20 times more effective than C02 at holding the heat and causing warming). After you have taken your little tour and seen what is going on, get back on line and add to your blog and climate change. Oh and while you are at it turn on the news and follow all those category 5 hurricanes battering the gulf. Just how long do you think it will be before a 5 hurricane hits Miami. Talk about a literal blow to the US economy. I read one report from an economist, not a cllimate scientists that if a Category 5 would hit New York City, and yes that is a poosiblity, that is would bring the US economy to its knees.

eddred
Is it true that liberals and democrats are just dog t*rds on the lawn waiting to be thrown in the street?

Found that Hansen quote
It's not quite what John Stossel implies. In 1999, an interviewer asked the loquacious Hansen how the view out his office window would be different in 20 years (that is, in 2019).

Hansen's reply was that the West Side Highway would be underwater, the trees in the median would be dead, all the birds would be extinct, the facing windows would be taped to withstand the increased wind, and there would be more police cars, because "...there's always more crime when it's hot."

So Hansen had not said that these things would happen by 2007.

But it does sound like the man had already flipped out. The madness has obviously progressed further since then, as the most recent pieces of his I've read have grown even more shrill. Funnily, at least one of them had him opining outside his own area--computer modeling of global climate. In this piece, he was claiming that the glacier specialists are downplaying how alarming their results really are because of "scientific reticence".

Now, his opinion on subjects outside his own specialty is no more intrinsically reliable than mine or any other citizen's. Further, since Hansen is always at the far edge of the alarmist crew, him urging others out on the same limb with him is a real hoot.

Oh, no
Why can't the Democrats keep out of our bathrooms?! What happened to the right to privacy in our own bathroom? :-)

Global Warming Fraud
This is more 'global warming fraud.' Last month James Hansen was implicated in more fraud over his attempts to hide and downplay the recent revelation by Canadian mathemetician Steven McIntyre that NASA's temperature measurements were wrong. As a result, all the key conclusions made by the global warming crowd were proven wrong.

McIntyre was the one who showed the so-called 'hockey stick' graph of earth temperatures with time was a sham due to a math error in the program used to analyze the data.

Take away the fraud and there is no connection between earth temperatures and human activity.

'Toilet man' doesn't want any debate because he knows the facts will prove him wrong-again!!

I have not subscribed to Consumer Reports in over 15 years, but I know what you said to be correct. I parted company with "Consumers' Union" in 1993, when they committed half of one issue to their prescription for "healthcare," which, sadly but predictably, was a call for socialized medicine. It was filled with all the typical leftist buzzwords and strawman statistics and completely devoid of how economics works in the real world. I learned then that CU was another leftist/socialist think tank and have never knowingly given them another red cent of my hard-earned money.

Hand of the Chinese Military at Work?
As the anthropogenic global warming (AGW) crowd succeeds in crippling the U.S. economy through energy taxes and regulation, those jobs will get exported to places which have been exempted from such rules: E.g., China, India, Indonesia, etc.

The Chinese military still controls most of the Chinese factories. So it is the senior officers in that military who will profit most handsomely from this handiwork of the U.S. Green movement.

Hillary had a problem last week with more wads of dirty money donated to her campaign by a questionable Chinese operative. Who's financing Gore & Edwards?

To: David Austin
The comment you made that "...99% of them [scientists] seem to agree ..." is not correct.

The much-vaunted "consensus" is that: (A) in the last century, the Earth has warmed by about 0.7 degrees C.; and (B) increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from human activities has had SOME impact.

That's the extent of the "consensus". Some scientists claim all of the warming is human-caused, most will say some.

The problem is that some of the editorial decisions at major scientific publications seem to be driven by those who want to shut up all debate and claim "the science is settled". For example, in 2004 the respected journal "Science" rejected an article by Bray & von Storch. This article was about a survey they had done of 530 climate scientists in 27 countries. The key question was where they asked to rank their belief from 1 to 7, where 1 meant they "strongly agreed" with the idea that human activity mostly caused climate change, and 7 meant they strongly disagreed. 9.4% strongly agreed, 9.7% strongly disagreed. The same survey implies that the number of climatologists who endorsed the UN IPCC evaluation as accurate was somewhere between 20% and 72%.

A 1997 survey of U.S. state climatologists had 44% of them stating that global warming was largely natural, while 17% claimed it was largely man-made.

This is hardly the "99%" that you so glibly tossed off. The science is NOT settled, and i somebody tells you it is, grab your wallet to make sure your pocket is not about to be picked.

There is no human caused global warming
We just voted to NOT curtail our greenhouse gas emissions, our excuse?

We're planning (our hostile govt) on increasing our population by 60% through immigration http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070830/ts_nm/climate_population_dc

Our UN delegation just said that.

Lazlo and UncaAlby,
You win the prize for the BEST posts of the day.
I had to print these to share with friends even if it did increase my carbon footprint, haha!

AudiR10, thanks for the info on the shower head. I will give it a try. If necessary, I can figure out a way to get incandescent bulbs to you so that you don't have to go the black market route.
I never knew about the mercury in those fluorescent bulbs...and have definitely broken/tossed some in the trash. I figure millions more have done or are still doing the same, and if they do know about the mercury, maybe they could care less or do not want to take them to a hazardous waste collection site.

Is there anyone else here who subscribes to Consumer Reports Magazine? If so, have you noted what I mentioned in my first post? Other posts noted the increased government intrusion into our lives, which is promoted and supported by the editors, etc. of the magazine.

Austin Toilets
In Austin Texas, they must have this kind of thing, because you have to flush the toilets three times to get the brown to go down.

You forgot the Rain Forest!!! How could you forget the Rain forest? LOL! Remember all those evil plastic bags came out to save the Rain Forest and now they are banning them in the name of Global Warming!

John, John, John...
The chimney police already have shown up in California, and why did you buy that speel that the toilets work? They still don't work.

Once again more harm than good caused because people fail to see the bend in the road.

Romm From Toilet Man to Vulcano Man
Romm, as with all of the Global Warming crazies, is nothing more than a born-again vulcano worshiper. At one time ignorant people attributed the eruptions of vulcanoes to their undisciplined lives and, therefore, sacraficed all to the vulcano gods.

Now, as then, all ignorant people are attributing climate change to their undisciplined lives and, therefore, sacraficing all to the global warming gods.

And, of course, since most of these ignorants are Democrats, the modern day virgins to be sacraficially slaughtered at the global warming altar seem to be Republicans. For good measure, as the sacrafice is underway, the ignorants would chant, "George Bush Lied, people died", "George Bush Lied, People Died", "George Bush Lied, People Died".....

David Austin
It is not prudent to bankrupt the country for a problem that is not a problem. It is also not prudent to fall for scams that steal money from the taxpayer and give it to 2-bit conmen.

There is no evidence that man is responsible for any significant change in earth's temperature. Everything that the conmen have put up has been refuted by real scientists.

Cap and Trade
How about those who send their kids to Public Education Centres having a "cap" on how many kids they can send? Then if they have more kids, they have to buy Offsets from people without kids or those who don't send their kids to the PEC to get the extra places.

99% agree?
David Austin,

I dispute this stat. I doubt you have a credible source for it.

My understanding is that the more scientists learn about the so-called "evidence" the more they disagree with the theory of AGW.

Why shouldn't we be "prudent"? Google "DDT".

The deadly hysteria has already started. That's right, "deadly". In a world where people are starving, and where the known oil reserves will last more than 100 years, we are turning food into fuel to serve this political propaganda. And as the price of food goes up even more people starve. And others are mass-murdered so there will be more food for their murderers.

Let's try it
I say we should try "cap and trade".

But instead of using it to "solve" global warming, which may not even be happening, let's use it to solve something we know for sure is broken; public education. This way, if "cap and trade" doesn't work we won't have lost anything. After all, as the saying goes, you can't f**k up a junkyard.

I propose that every district be given a "cap" on the amount of money it can spend on teacher's salaries. This cap amount will be determined by the national average times the number of students in the district.

Districts that go over their "cap" can "trade" for additional money with districts that have extra funds under their caps.

This way we will get fairer salary distribution among teachers, less incentive for all the best teachers to go to the richest districts and leave the poorest districts with the worst teachers, and we can gaurantee that the cost of education (per student) won't keep rising.

Lazlo --
quoth Lazlo: "This 'the Earth is warming and it's all our fault' baloney is the same brand of hubris that caused ancient peoples to throw virgins into volcanoes."

My brother-in-law is a down-to-earth agronomist and (though he has no stake in acid-rain producing industries) he dismisses "acid rain" derisively as a "hoax." But then again, what does an agronomist know.

The mindless politicians most always wait for the mindless population of voters to be convinced of the coming _________ before they enact their junk legislation, lest they cost themselves even a single vote. And most of it is not as deadly as the DDT ban. Usually it's just either terribly inconvenient & irritating or terribly expensive, sometimes both.

The global warming hoax appears to be a sort of SUPER HOAX, which might end up being inconvenient, irritating, expensive AND deadly.

Signed,
A Denier

How dare we be prudent!
I see Stossel's point, and I've always had doubts about global warming, etc. but if the scientists are right (and 99% of them seem to agree on this matter) shouldn't we be prudent with regard to the future of the planet. Nobody said it would be easy - but I don't like the sound of the alternative.

Yes, the toilet man
strikes again. That ranks up there with the Freon fraud, the DDT deception, and the now the Global Warming scam of the century. I say put them all in jail. Bring back Mr. Toilet and give him 1 square of paper and an ounce of water for every bathroom visit.

1.6 gallon toilets
From the 1992 National Energy Policy Act (H.R. 776). The original act was proposed by a Republican and like similar acts passed later did nothing for actual energy and spent money for boondoggles like water. It also greatly increased the power of the Government through mandates to the various energy agencies. It directed public utilities to pay fees for the decommissioning and cleanup of government enrichment sites. It also expanded by 10% a requirement for companies to hire minorities and women. Bush I signed this bill into law on Oct 24, 1992. Bush I had a lot of reservations about this bill but he signed it anyway. If he had been a real conservative he would have vetoed it.
Sec. 123. Energy conservation requirements for certain lamps and plumbing products added the requirement for 1.6 gal/flush. The method of additon was very devious and underhanded. It reworded portions of an ANSI standard. Nowhere in the bill or bill summary does it say “we are mandating that flush toilets be limited to 1.6 gal/flush. H*ll, the citizens may have rose up and protested if they knew. Even the amendment that added the flush toilet didn’t say what it was doing.

This bill was passed by the 102nd congress; 55 Dems/45 Repubs in the Senate and 270 Dems/164 Repubs in the House (1 independent). Only 20 Dems and 40 Repubs voted against it. You can see that even in 1992 the Repubs were Democratlite.
And where has it gotten us? Has anybody seen a decrease in water use? Hahahaha.

hmmmmmmmmm....
interesting posts, everyone. Especially the one that likens this hysteria to ancient civilizations that thought throwing virgins into volcanoes would save the people while their priests lived high on the hog. Very good analogy! And very accurate.

I remember way back when:

1. we were 'warned' a new 'ice age' was upon us and imminent...well, golly! I don't see the apocolyptic "Day After Tomorrow" scenario engulfing us (that movie was only good for special affects...the plot was laughably ridiculous!)

2. we were 'warned' of the affects of 'acid rain'....uhhhh, we haven't melted!

3. there was much hollering over DDT and the horrors it brought to ecological systems....funny that today and after MILLIONS of people died of malaria due to the inability to control mosquito infestations, DDT is getting another look at. It might turn out DDT was no more a threat to ecological systems than cow farts (oops! apparently bovine flatulence is dangerous, too! Whatever shall we do???)

4. the high pitched screeches over the hole in the ozone layer...can't use aerosol spray any more...big no-no! and every refridgerator had to be 'refitted' to omit that dangerous coolant (I fergit what it was called-yeah, I'm gettin' up there in age!)...guess what? the hole in the ozone layer is closing..ON ITS OWN!

Yep. Seen this hysteria bs more than once in my life and it all turned out to be nonsense. I ain't buyin into yet another hoax. The REAL threat are the doomsday the-sky-is-falling chicken littles that influence mindless politicians to pass junk legislation based on junk science.

Perfect Example
The "Toilet Man" is a perfect example of government gone wild!. The government of the US today is far WORSE than the one we had under the British King George. I am certain the founding fathers are spinning. GIVE ME A BREAK !!!

The man that belongs in the toilet.
"Don't bother debating with John Stossel and the libertarians. They are worst than Republicans." What do you expect from someone that is incompetent in the English language - It is "worse" stupid! I suspect many from the Clinton White House have an English language problem - "That depends on the what the definition of is is."

Those 1.6 gal things work
as long as the dump is small and only need two, ...., well, ...., you know. That doesn't happen very often. Otherwise it's multiple flushes. Let's see, 2 X 1.6 = 3.2, 3 X 1.6 = 4.8, etc. Yeah, those things really save water - NOT!

AudiR10
With your health care paid for by Government, the question of whether you should go blind or not will certainly be the subject of a bureaucratic cost/benefit analysis.

It's possible you may get a waiver in order to allow you to use incandescents (though it will probably cost you a huge annual fee).

You'll still need to stock up, of course, else you'll have to travel to Kyoto-exempt countries to buy your bulbs.

Government-forced conservation
My favorite among government-forced conservation improvements is the water restricter on the KITCHEN faucet. Yes, all too often we use tooo much water to rince our dishes.

For years I dealt with a clogged garbage disposal every time I ground "too much" garbage. (The plunger does work on the garbage disposal side, but does sometimes cause a leak below.)

Then one day a kindly plumber, whispering and checking over his shoulder (for government spies, I assumed), removed the tiny water restricter and my disposal never clogged again.

Now we've built a new house and the water "pressure" at the kitchen faucet is laughable. Unfortunately, according to the plumbers, the restricter is now incorporated into the faucet and cannot be removed.

My thanks to all the faceless bureaucrats in Washington for protecting my well from going dry.

Oh sh*t
1.)I'd like to tell you where on Algore'a anatomy I want to put my carbon footprint, but the TH censors won't let me.
2). Flush twice, it's a long way to Kyoto.

Government should force all to:
The only regulation/law I think the government should pass is to make it mandatory for every citizen to read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. Sure you can comment on her personal life but the theme of the story is right on the mark. Its exactly where we are heading. Yeah I know railroads and steel are no longer what they once were thats not the point. On second thought the people that are the consumers wont understand what they are. After all they are above the rest of us. And the producers are too busy doing to enter the fray. Unfortunely its only in fiction where the good guys win.
Stossel is on the money once again. Too bad common sense has be outlawed. Some days I feel like Alice as she is falling down the rabbit hole. BTW is Al Gore the king of hearts?

Sorry..
Sorry about the double post; it's dark in here.

It still works on the same principle.
Invent a disaster; spring is not coming, the gods are mad at us, the Earth is warming up.
Then the priest class extracts goods and services from the populous, enjoying a leisure filled lifestyle with fame attached for identifying the perils we ignoramuses would have missed without them.
But now it's cool and profitable to cry Global Warming, tool around in convoys of SUV's, and warn us, the sheep about how far we have strayed from the path of Earth Consciousness.
Environmentalists give me gas.
Every Liberal I know drones on and on about how the government should have 'done more' to help New Orleans after Katrina.
But they puff up when I remind them that the government was sued no less than twenty one times to stop work on the levies; by environmentalists!
This is all the same old snow job, but with suits and ties instead of face paint and rattles.

Soothsayer was making a joke, in usual smarmy-Leftist fashion, implying that Stossel is gay and indulges in anonymous bathroom sex. It was typical Leftist behavior, really; amazing how the sensitive Left loves casting gay aspersions at conservatives they dislike.

But Stossel will do very well in Ron Paul's cabinet. Or perhaps VP?

I needed a spew alert for you comment about stupidity and the pituitary!! Excellent!

Hurting the poor
It's funny how environmentalists have such a great image among leftists when their proposals generally hurt the poor more than anyone else. Replacing a toilet when you don't have to is easy for an Al Gore, but it's much more of a burden for the poor. And there's lots of examples of this sort of thing.

Carbon Police are Here
Here in Kanukistan the Province can install meters which allow the State to reach out and adjust your power use at their will.

P.S. I do not use those whirly lights because fluorescent lights hurt my eyes. If the Light Bulb Police start marching, I will have to stock up as well. Or go blind. I guess to the Hissy Fitters it would be better for me to go blind.

Government regulating energy
One can see where the 'carbon police' is heading. We already have John Edwards telling the rest of the country to permanently park their SUVs while he makes no apology for continuing to use the two he owns. Soon they would like to tell us when we can and can't turn on our air conditioners. Look at the residents of Southern California - the recent heat wave and lack of power due to all the environmental red tape which prevents new power plants being built - they suffered without power and cool air. Is this what we are heading towards? And remember just 30 years ago, many of these same experts were prediciting a global cool down. Hysteria always makes for ridiculous policies...and the average citizen suffers as a result.

Auto Flush
Our firm has installed auto flush and hands free water faucets because apparently mature men and women cannot be taught to flush -- or not to leave the water running while they turn around to talk to their friends about Survivor: TTC. The auto flush toilets do a moderately good job, but they do not always flush. You have to flush them using the manual button, and then usually they flush when you have left the booth but not always.

If you unscrew your shower head and take out that little plastic doohickey that fits over the water holes, your shower will work like a normal shower. And for all you hippies that want to save water, you remember what they taught you in the Sixties (assuming any of you actually showered in the Sixties): shower with a friend.

Conservation.
My contempt for the conservation movement is such that I go out of my way to break enviromental laws,as long as I don't get caught. It does no good actually, but it makes me feel better. If the enviromental people don't like it,they can go hire a whole Army of inspectors and spies, within Constitutional limits of course,to enforce their demands.

BTW,the latest demand is to outlaw incandescent bulbs, and replace them with florescent bulbs,at $7.00 a pop for a 100 watt bulb,at Walmarts.I hate flourescent bulbs. If they get close to their goal,I'll have to go and stock up on incandescents.I don't care about my electricity bill,I want my bulb!

And a good swirly to all of these hemorrhoids.

Did you actually *read* the article? The Clintonian crapper constriction " 1.6 gallons flush" ukase was bloated upon toilets in private homes, not public restrooms.

Beauty may be skin-deep, but stupid goes right on down to the pituitary.

This can't be good...
Any guy with a moustache like Stosell's writing about public bathrooms can't lead to a good outcome.

Mr. Stossel, great article.
Since our home has those 1.6 gallon toilets, we know of which you speak. We just had a new shower installed and the salesman was telling me that once he removed the water saving feature from the faucet that his shower worked better than ever. Unfortunately I wish I had asked him for more details as to what he did so that I could have done the same to ours.

Although this is slightly off topic, we noted the latest issue of Consumer Reports Magazine
found it necessary to discuss global warming while doing a report on light bulbs. The same article also featured a side-bar box informing readers as to their "carbon footprint." What a load of baloney! What next, ratings of carbon-offset companies like the one owned by Al Gore?

This type of "reporting" is not new to the magazine, but it is becoming increasingly frequent. Both the magazine and Consumers Union claim to be completely unbiased (since they accept no advertising revenue) yet they pepper the magazine with political messages and suggestions for more government programs to keep consumers safe. Somehow they have lost the original intent of their mission. Enough so that we have written to let them know we will not hesitate to cancel our subscription which we have had for 15-20 years.

Catastrophe is their bread and butter.
Without it, most liberals would starve. And, if it is not here YET, it will be soon!

Stossel Is the Man
I'm almost done with "Give Me A Break" It's a very telling book and I highly recommend it for all true TH readers & bloggers.

Libs can continue to believe in fairy tales and false socialist utopia myths.

Carry on…
