Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"I don't know that terrorists will come, but I don't know they won't come," Lake County Mayor Macie Roberson told us, smiling.

At least he didn't do what Columbus, Ohio did: spend it on bulletproof vests for police dogs.

Ervin concedes that some security money is wasted, but still says we need to spend more. "It's very important to reassure the American people that our government is doing everything it can to protect them," he told me. "If we do that, we will have succeeded in denying terrorists a major victory."

No. The opposite is true. It's overreacting that would give them a victory.

Of course, terrorism is a real threat. But fear kills people, too. A University of Michigan study found that an additional 1,000 Americans died in car accidents in the three months after Sept. 11, because they were afraid to fly. We need to keep risk in perspective.

"We have had dark moments in our history, far darker moments than those we face today," says The Rand Corporation's Brian Michael Jenkins. After studying terrorism for 40 years, he likes to remind people, "We've come through wars, plagues, pandemics ... The response to terrorism cannot be diving under the kitchen table and living in a state of fear. That's exactly what the terrorists are attempting to create."

McCarthyism and terrorism
Who's the real coward here? We can't do much to stop terrorists from getting weapons of mass destruction. They won't get them because anyone who has them won't give them to them. Should we consider chicken little a national hero? This is the cold war all over again. Al Qaeda will fall from the inside, not from anything we can do. Bravery is refusing to be intimidated. Let's not worry our lives away like we did over communism

I agree with Stossel

"If they cared about our "keeping us safe", they would have protected our borders. They still refuse to do so. Does this make sense to you?"

Exactly. If all those beauracrats in Washington really wanted to protect us, they would clamp down on the biggest threat of all, our open border. If any terrorist really wanted to hit us again, forget about having to fly into the coutnry and risk getting caught at Immigration. All he has to do is wade across the Rio Grande.

As for Stossel's column, it reminds me of when I used to work for a small commuter airline in the States. We talked about terrorism in a traininn class, and our instructor said it was unlikely a terrorist would hijack one of our planes. "I don't think they want to kill people on a plane going to Sioux City, South Dakota."

Now I live here in England. Since the London train bombings back in '05, they've caught other terrorist suspects, and they've all been trying to blow up buses or the Tube again. So far nobody has been caught trying to bring a plane down, even though England has the busiest airport in the world, Heathrow. So I agree with Stossel's expert. 9/11 was the exception. If terrorists do head for America again, they'll probably go for a crowded subway system or something similar. And it will probably be in a major city like New York or LA, not out in the heartland.
