Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

When he was in college, atmospheric-science professor John Christy was told, "it was a certainty that by the year 2000, the world would be starving and out of energy."

That prediction has gone the way of so many others. But environmentalists continue to warn us that we face environmental disaster if we don't accept the economic disaster called the Kyoto treaty. Lawyers from the Natural Resources Defense Council (another environmental group with more lawyers than scientists) explain: "Sea levels will rise, flooding coastal areas." And Al Gore's new movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," depicts a future in which cities are submerged by rising sea levels.

Wow.

But many scientists laugh at the panic.

Christy says, "Doomsday prophecies grabbed headlines but have proven to be completely false. Similar pronouncements today about catastrophes due to human-induced climate change sound all too familiar."

But the media can't get enough of doomsday.

The Washington Post reported that because of melting ice caps and glaciers, "The End Is Near!" But melting Arctic ice won't raise sea levels any more than the melting ice in your drink makes your glass overflow.

MSNBC and the BBC ran stories on the coming calamity from Greenland's melting glaciers. Unlike Arctic ice, those melting glaciers could raise sea levels. But other reports note that Greenland's ice has been thickening in the interior of Greenland.

The former vice president's film shows dramatic film of big chunks of ice breaking off glaciers, but the "calving" of icebergs is a normal, natural process involved in the growth of glaciers into the sea. The movie features some majestic glaciers that existed in the 19th Century that have all but disappeared today -- but it doesn't bother to mention any of the glaciers growing in Norway, New Zealand and even the United States. The U.S. Forest Service reports that the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska's Tongass National Forest is advancing so rapidly, it threatens to close off a major fjord.

He shows shocking time-lapse photos of ice disappearing from Mt. Kilimanjaro. The ice there has been melting for over a hundred years.

Climate always changes. "An Inconvenient Truth" implies that all serious scientists agree that it is a crisis, and that the United States must immediately reduce carbon dioxide emissions as dictated by the Kyoto treaty the Bush administration so arrogantly refuses to sign -- the same treaty the Clinton-Gore administration didn't even submit to the Senate.

But even advocates of Kyoto admit that if all nations signed the agreement and obeyed it, it would affect global temperatures by less than a tenth of a degree!

To achieve a meaningful reduction in emissions, politicians would have to set drastic limits on driving, air conditioning and all industrial production. I suppose "essential" car use would be allowed, and politicians would decide what is essential. A $10 a gallon tax on gasoline might be a start, and Al Gore could funnel the tax money to the scientist "friends" he repeatedly cites in his movie.

Let's calm down.

The scary claims about heat waves and droughts are based on computer models. But computer models are lousy at predicting climate because water vapor and cloud effects cause changes that computers fail to predict. They were unable to anticipate the massive amounts of heat energy that escaped the tropics over the past 15 years, forcing modelers back to the drawing board. In the mid-1970s, computer models told us we should prepare for global cooling.

The fundamentalist doom-mongers ignore scientists who say the effects of global warming may be benign. Harvard astrophysicist Sallie Baliunas says added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may actually benefit the world because more CO2 helps plants grow. Warmer winters would give farmers a longer harvest season.

Why don't we hear about this part of the global warming argument?

"It's the money!" says Dr. Baliunas. "Twenty-five billion dollars in government funding has been spent since 1990 to research global warming. If scientists and researchers were coming out releasing reports that global warming has little to do with man, and most to do with just how the planet works, there wouldn't be as much money to study it."

And the politicians would have one less excuse to take control of our lives.

A Convenient Lie
Right on John! I just finished your latest book -- it made me laugh and also shake my head with dismay at all the myths that you debunked.
Al Gore NEEDS to be exposed for the dishonest huckster that he is. Too many people have been lulled into believing his half-truths, and the reportedly 17,000 scientists who DON'T agree with him need to speak out!!

Reason is always on the defensive
It's just a damned shame that Doomsday prophecies sell so well. At least when sex sells, our taxes and freedom don't go up and down, respectively. :D

Al Snore
Just a few of the facts conveintly forgotten by the LSM.

I Blame Haliburton . . .
and President Bush for global warming . . . on Mars . . . http://tinyurl.com/nafqv.

A Convenient Lie
"It's the Money"???? In one corner we have doomsday scientists and in the other, capitalists who don't want hear even the suggestion of more regulation....yeah, it's all about the money! John, you have brought to people's attention a number of topics worth further investigation, but neither you nor Gore nor any number of scientists KNOWS if global warming is an impending crisis or a bag of voodoo. It is true that CO2 is an important ingredient in the process of photosynthesis in plants that produce oxygen for our planet. But it is also true that the amount of CO2 that has been sent into our atmosphere over the course of the industrial revolution has increased also...effecting the "natural" CO2 cycle. Do you think it possible that the amount of plant-life (that uses that CO2) has decreased in the past 100 years as well?

The Last Sentence Says It All
The anthrogenic "global warming" dogma is all about exponetially increasing government control over every aspect of our lives. The logic, if you will, of the notion that carbon dioxide emissions have to be limited, leads directly to permanent, institutionalized energy rationing. The logic of treaties to limit carbon dioxide emissions, e.g. the Kyoto Protocol, and the disputes and decisions and rulings they would spawn, in turn leads directly to the de facto establishment of a socialist world government. Imagine having to comply with UN directives on setting your thermostat, or whether or not, and what, and how much, you may drive. Energy is freedom, & there have been elitists trying to get permanent ongoing control of our private access to energy on various pretexts, since long before anybody dreamed up the carbon dioxide anthrogenic "global warming" fable.

This is THE subject of our times
Global warming, global warming, global warming - it's become religion for millions with few if any voices to counter the dogma (one being John Stossel's).

Energy provides freedom and is the fuel that makes possible economic development, which is the only cure for misery, lower life expectancies, poverty, etc.

The "cure" for global warming - rationing energy by regulation or taxes (making the sources that provide energy artificially expensive) - will bring about an illness far worse than the average temperature MAYBE going up one-tenth of a degree per decade. And the cure - Kyoto - won't do anything to cool the planet. It will just raise prices, making families less able to afford every-day commodities, spend less, force layoffs, etc.

That is, more people will die or suffer economically because we "did something about global warming" than if we had done nothing.

As usual, the "cost-benefit" analysis is completely missing in most media presentations of this issue, and thus in the thinking of the typical man on the street who purportedly is willing to pay $1,000 monthly utility bills to do his part to keep polar bears from falling off glaciers into the ocean.

Way To Go John!!!!
Your books are great, you're great on 20/20, your columns [mainly the myth debunking] are always number one with me. When my daughter is over on Fri nites we always are sure to watch you on 20/20.

This entire global warming religion [man made]is so far out in left field that they will come around the other side soon. It is impossible to have an intelligent conversation with the converts to this religion. I have one in my family and no matter what proofs I send to him, no matter what I show him it's no use he is convinced that this is the worst thing to ever happen to the world even worse than the war on terror [which he seems to either believe is our fault or some secret government cabal did the 9/11 attacks-so you can see wherehe comes from].

The second thing after global warming [according to my very liberal family member] is, take your choice, biotechnology, genetically engineered or genetically modified he feels that these have the ability to destroy the planet.

I have some posts on my blog about warming none on biotech yet I'm at http://jevica2003.tomnhall.com

John keep up the good work.

Here is more unknown evidence
Last Friday, I heard an interview with author Tom Standage, about his book - A History Of The World In Six Glasses (it about the role drinks had in our world history). During the interview he mentioned that England, (as I recall) had been producing beer because the cool climate didnt support the growth of grapes for wine. He casually mentioned that they started to produce wine "again" because the climate warmed "again" allowing the growth of grapes. I thought to myself in my car, "wow, the climate was warm then cool then warm again?" Cool!

Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Ok, but if you bring up Mt. Kilimanjaro you should also mention that the ice has cap is disappearing due to deforestation rather than even local climate change:

Scare tactics
There's no doubt that all of the panic about Global Warming is based on lies. I don't understand why anyone would agree with Al Gore, I honestly believe he suffered a severe nervous breakdown after the election and is still off his rocker.

I predict the next big scare coming up is this Bird Flu Pandemic. To hear the World Health Organization talk 60% of the worlds population is going to die from this bird flu. WHO=UN which makes this claim even though up until now there haven't been any cases of the avian flu HN51 being transmitted from human to human. It seems every few years we hear about some new flu or disease that will cause massive deaths around the world. Remember the original predictions for AIDS, we were all going to die. Just like global warming these scientist get more money if they scare everyone. The truth here is there might be a major flu epidemic caused from the avain flu virus in the near future, but the chances of it spreading around the world like wild fire is probably slim.

If Al's propaganda weren't so dangerous:
All things being viewed through the, everything-is-political, microscope.

I would simply suspect he is attempting to position himself as the "True Green" candidate for president. Thereby eliminating the 'need' for a third-party candidate. And, in his deluded mind, ensuring his election.

After all, we must realize, were it not for the Green candidate Ralph Nader it is almost certain Gore would have defeated Bush. That is, were it not for Bush, 'stealing' the election in Florida. Come on, just ask Al. He'll tell you.

This is good propaganda, fear ignorants!
Sure, let's calm down. We can take all we want, FOR GRANTED. FOREVER!

Al must be such a weirdo for telling people to be moderate and establish an equilibrium with the nature that keeps us alive. After all why should we accept something that contradicts our bad style of life? I understand why it's easier to deny all of this, but if I'd ignore for a second all the data and the info from both sides, that circulates around regarding the ecological problems I'd be left with what I see day after day only. I'm from Europe and here, at least I know for sure that the nature totally changed very FAST (aggravating floods every year), so I assure you this is NOT only a small cycle thingie.

You say that those "scary claims" are based on "computer models". Actually the're based on data resulted from observations; i.e. scientists take ice samples and study trapped bubbles of air from hundreds of years ago and compare it to the composition of the air from today. Then they take this data, put it on paper and with a ruler you can actually predict the future.
Kids could do that!

They're ILLUSTRATED with the aid of a computer, not based on something a computer would generate automatically at a push of a button. It's only that computers are the best way to create graphs and timelapse animations.

P.S. Sometimes I catch interesting info on 2020, Keep it up!

Companies: The Real Global Warning Scare
You're right on the money John. The tragic part of the Global Warming scare is that the hype has turned into action -- particularly within companies. Companies have caved into the hype, and now focus their business around 'green' publicity campains. In the mean time, they lose site of their core business, which slowly deteriorates. We've all seen this recently with BP. The spend hundreds of millions of dollars on their Beyond Petroleum campain, while their pipelines deteriorate, refineries explode, and they stop critical production. lose-lose (excuse the cliche). I'm poorly articulating the research and views from an organization called Free Enterpriser. They saw this coming for months now. They also cover other companies that are already down the same path. http://www.freeenterpriser.com. I think they are onto something.

The Religion of the Mind
It's so funny when these people make fun of other people for their Faith. These things that they hold to be true just end up being a religious fanaticism in itself. Me? I'd rather believe in a hope that holds goodness and kindness and a future in which we are all reconciled. I don't want to have faith in a religion that decries the destruction of a planet at the hands of a ruthless creature called 'man'.
Idiots.

For once I agree
Global Warming is being taken too drastically far out of context it's ridiculous.

Dodo Bird and Polar Bears
Whatever you may believe, I know the dodo bird did not off and kill themselves. Do you really think that we have no effect on the world around us? Just like the garbage they fed the people that 'Indians are savages'-let's kill them off, we truly are idiotic to believe these stupid government officials in the pockets of greedy companies.

It doesn't take a 4 year to know that trash is trash, and John, your argument is totally trash!
First off, the institutions you named to backup your story are government run. Hell, they'll sell all the national parks to oil companies and make you believe that it's for the good of the people. They are paid to twist and say whatever promotes Bush's agenda.

Why don't we throw these denial scientists and denial people into the artic and let them drown and see how they like it! Then tell them that their home is not melting. Oh, don't forget to send the oil drill crews over first and rip every living tree and object down and dump some oil in their home first. Are we picking to kill the Polar Bears over a few barrels of oil. So we can do what, make some plastic bags with it? drive to McDonalds a couple more times? or just screw ourselves?

Excellent Article
I have just visited Barack Obama's website and reviewed his socialistic "energy plan" and he spouts off the same lies about "global warming" and "climate change". His measures, based on pseudo-science,would bankrupt America and send it into collapse. There is NO man-made global warming. That is a capability we do not have and never will have. 19,000 scientists who disagree with the human-induced global warming myth have much more credibility than a few slimy politicians.

I forgot
Thank you,John, for being the voice of reason against the lies of the environmentalist loonies.

Al Gore belongs in the sanitarium
So....Al Gore said we'd be starving to death and at the point of extinction because of "global warming" by 2000? They why am I very much alive eight years later, and surviving very well I might add. In the 1970s, the liberal scare-mongerers were telling us that the world was on the verge of extinction because of a coming "global cooling" cycle which would freeze everything solid. Back in 1990, on the joke canned "Earth Day", Al Gore (or as I call him "Al Bore" told us we had "ten years left" before the world ended. YAWN! My opinion? God and God alone holds the key to the future of this planet. We have nothing whatsoever to do with it's future....but of course you cant' put THAT in a public school text book, can you....even it it's the truth!

Lies what Lies
Albert had a good teacher. What was that one about Crying Wolf. Oh Well. Listen use some common sense. Follow the Money. Follow the Money.

Right On
Keep it up John. The only cure for a lie is the truth, spoken with propotionate reppition to match the hysteria that imposes the lie.

The priests and trolls of this faith are still strong and on the move.

The end game, to control energy, its production and consumption, is the darkest motive behind the fallacy.

The Administration has already voiced firm plans to submit America to "Kyoto II" upcoming in Copenhagen, through the words of Hillary, Steven Chu (Sec. Energy) and others.
