Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Regarding the AIG bonus bonanza and numerous economic bailout packages, a Tennessee constituent of Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn said it best when he told the congresswoman: "I'm tired of the government spending money I have not made yet for programs I don't want."

HERE WE GO AGAIN

Once again, as often happens when the going gets tough, France and everything "French" gets a share of the blame.

When President Bush marched into Baghdad and France didn't follow, the French became adversaries. To the extent that potato-loving Americans stopped ordering "french fries" in favor of "freedom fries."

Now here we bob in the turbulent wake of the AIG bailout and the French are again the enemy.

"AIG took bailout money and then gave millions to executives in bonuses," Rep. Ted Poe, Texas Republican, noted this week. "To make matters worse, AIG gave bailout money to foreign banks, like in France."

And?

"The French are the same people who vilify the United States, blame the world's problems on us, and have a disdain for everything American," he said. "I think the U.S. has bailed out France enough. We helped save France in World War I, saved them again in World War II, and took over in Vietnam after they failed there - but with little or no gratitude from the French!"

BRAIN AWARENESS

It should not go unnoticed that 45-year-old actress Natasha Richardson died of her head injury during Brain Awareness Week.

Rep. Joe Sestak, Pennsylvania Democrat and a military veteran, pointed out the same day Miss Richardson succumbed to her ski-related injury that out of the 1.8 million American men and women who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, an astonishing 360,000 "have returned with a brain injury."

Approximately 90,000 of the troops will have "lasting" brain damage, the Pentagon confirms.

MARINE PROMOTION

Speaking of the U.S. military, as of this week there are 100 congressional co-sponsors of legislation to redesignate the Department of the Navy to be the "Department of the Navy and Marine Corps."

The Marine Corps is a legally distinct military service within the Department of the Navy, although the National Security Act of 1947 defines the Marine Corps, Navy, Army and Air Force as the nation's four services.

"The Marine Corps has not asked for complete autonomy," says Rep. Walter B. Jones, the North Carolina Republican who introduced the legislation. "Nothing structurally needs to change in their relations with the Navy, which has served both branches well. The Corps only asks for recognition. Having served their nation proudly and courageously since colonial days, the leathernecks have earned a promotion."

CLIMATE EXPERTS

We were listening to Sen. James M. Inhofe, Oklahoma Republican, discuss President Obama's first federal budget, which as he pointed out this week includes an enormous redistribution of wealth for pet projects and programs under the "umbrella of clean energy."

He revealed that the number of lobbyists seeking to influence federal policy on climate change - "That is what we are talking about here," the senator said - has grown more than a whopping 300 percent in five years.

"This represents more than four lobbyists for every member of Congress," he says, every one of them "clamoring for new taxpayer-funded subsidies."

ALL IN THE FAMILY?

Given the current economic crisis, numerous headlines of late have asked: "Could Obama be the new Roosevelt?"

There's nobody better able to answer that question than James Roosevelt Jr., grandson of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

American University's School of Public Affairs is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a two-day conference next Thursday and Friday, with the opening keynote address by Mr. Roosevelt.

The grandson of the 32nd president of the United States is president and CEO of the Tufts Health Plan.

OBAMA FORGOT TO INFORM DODD
CHRIS DODD IS NOT THAT STUPID HE WAS NOT INFORMED BY THE PRESIDENT NOR HIS TELEPROMPTER WHAT LANGUAGE HAD BEEN ADDED TO THE AIG TARP PAYMENT. WHY ELSE WOULD OBAMA AND GEITHNER BOTH CLAIM TO BE OUTRAGE FOR THE DEAL GEITHNER HIMSELF DESIGNED WHILE WORKING FOR THE FED AND DESIGNING THE TARP AT THE REQUEST OF PRESIDENT OBAMA.

Blaming the French?
Well. Well. Mark Twain started it!

Thanks
You have the best articles today and thank you for outlining the most interesting.

my two cents
This story is told: In the mid-1950's NATO was being put together and France wanted no part of it. Charles De Gaulle was heard saying that he wanted all American soldiers out of France asap.

John Foster Dulles was at that time the American Secretary of State. He asked "does that include the 100,000 buried there?"

History does not record the reply of Le Grand Charles. perhaps (for once) he had the intelligence to stfu.

French Rebound?
The French are seriously considering a return to NATO. Maybe with Russia moving against Europe again, the French will rediscover their national courage.

John
NATO is no longer a positive proposition for the United States and we should get out now. On the contrary, Europe (and Canada) has shielded its economy behind our trillions of expenditures for safety of the free world. We never really could afford it and emphatically now, we must tighten our belts and pull the troops committed to NATO and the UN home. The war in Iraq may or may not have been worth it, but Kosovo, Bosnia, Cyprus and American troops all over the world are not. They are not appreciated and only serve to weaken us because they weaken potential allies. Along with foreign aid, these troops just give our diplomats and generals scope for pointless posturing and false importance.

France, a wonderful place to visit

My Sweetie and I visited France 9 times over 25 years, for a total of about 6 months.

What a wonderful place to visit. We could suffer the same amount of discourtesy in the Local 7/11, as we had during those 6 months.

As one friend told us, when we mentioned how nice we had been treated, "The French don't even like each other."

It is amazing how many sweet, wonderful, interesting people you will meet when you are in a good mood.

I wrote two books about our travels in France, they are not for sale, but are available at

You must be kidding me!
Putting the U.S.M.C. "under" or "with" the Navy is the best use of our congressman's time at this point in our national crisis? Do these IDIOTS have even ONE clue? I think none do. As any U.S. Marine will tell you, there are no better accommodations on tour or in war than a U.S. Navy battleship. They are great chauffeurs! No dis' intended to the wonderful men and women of the U.S. Navy---really!

The French will rediscover their national courage? How can you rediscover what you've never displayed?
We had to sink their fleet in WWII.
I was in the Navy when we bailed them out of Vietnam after DienBienPhu.
My guess would be that France temporarily ran out of white flags.

Insipid!
What an INSIPID article...and the post are as bad [although the "other" Jim offers a positive note]. ALL CAPS Patrick is back with his usual incoherent rants. What tripe!

Jim-Too

What?
Wow, that 360,000 really threw me. God Bless our soldiers.

today
Well, a couple of interesting articles inserted into what is normally pretty pointless.

Thanks for using your instincts and not just putting in stuff.

France: whose side is it on?
RE France: in the Falklands War, British soldiers found themselves strafed by French-made aeroplanes, and these planes sand the HMS Sheffield with French-made Exocet missiles.

Furthermore, France continued to arm Iraq after Western countries (including itself) had agreed not to sell arms to the country, with the result that American forces personnel as well as British found themselves facing French-made matériel.
