Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The Federal Election Commission says it finds no reason to believe campaign violations occurred when then-Sen. Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, obtained a discounted “super super jumbo” mortgage from Northern Trust Co.

The complaint, filed by Judicial Watch, further claimed that the discounted mortgage rate was a prohibited corporate contribution that was never reported.

In its ruling, the FEC says it “found no reason to believe that the loan was made contrary to applicable law or outside the ordinary course of business, and no reason to believe that it was a prohibited corporate contribution.”

The complaint was filed July 8 after it was reported that the Illinois senator received a home loan of $1.32 million at a rate of 5.625 percent, although the average going rate on that same day was reportedly between 5.93 percent and 6 percent.

In addition, the complaint had charged, unlike what was reportedly available for the public, the special below-market loan was secured without an origination fee or discount points.

'BIG IDEAS'

We've just learned that Al From, who founded the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) more than two decades ago, will retire later this year and that he's asked Bruce Reed, the DLC's president, to succeed him as chief executive.

Mr. Reed, you might recall, recently co-authored “The Plan: Big Ideas for Change in America” with none other than President Obama's White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

MUSICAL CHAIRS

OK, let's get this straight: Tom McMahon, until lately the executive director of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), is joining Americans United for Change (AUFC) as acting executive director, succeeding AUFC President Brad Woodhouse, who is leaving to become director of communications and research at the DNC.

FOR THE RECORD

We had to laugh at Matt Mackowiak's farewell letter as press secretary to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Texas Republican.

”After two years, traveling to all 20 Texas media markets, over 217,000 e-mails (including 57,000 sent e-mails), fielding thousands of press calls, and writing, editing and sending hundreds of press releases, today is my last day,” he wrote.

WORTH NOTING

A resolution is being introduced in Congress on Wednesday that would mark the second Tuesday in March as National DVT Screening Day in honor of the late Washington Rep. Jennifer Dunn, who died from a pulmonary embolism resulting from DVT.

Up to 2 million Americans suffer from DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, every year, and about 300,000 die from a related complication called pulmonary embolism. Miss Dunn collapsed and died of a pulmonary embolism in 2007 in her Alexandria apartment.

At the time of her death, she was co-chairman of Women for Mitt in support of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

DOUBLY TAXED

While recognizing that many Americans this tax season are experiencing difficult times financially - some losing their jobs, others finding incomes decreased or else tapping into retirement funds - the Internal Revenue Service says to “file a tax return even if you are unable to pay” to avoid additional penalties.

And get this: the IRS says the loss of a job creates new tax issues.

“Severance pay and unemployment compensation are taxable,” it warns. “Payments for any accumulated vacation or sick time also are taxable. You should ensure that enough taxes are withheld from these payments or make estimated tax payments to avoid a big bill at tax time.”

If it's any consolation, food stamps are not taxable.

Mortgages are for the poor smucs
With Obama and Dodd getting sweet deals from the corrupt mortgage companies, why not give $275 billion to those who couldn't afford the homes their in, and payoff their mortgages as well. So what if 93% of Americans pay their mortgages on-time, without needing foreclosure to bail them out. Can I get some of that to payoff my mortgage as well? I seriously doubt it. Reward failure, and punish success ... that should be Obama's new moto.

No corruption
regarding the Obama mortgage pay off..why am I not surprised?

The devil
is in the details, or is it in the government?

It's an obvious question with an answer far from obvious.

There are variations in the mortgage game which can't be summed up in only two or three data points. The question would be: if any Joe Blow had walked in with the same timing, same credit qualifications, same property, same sales price, same history with the bank (some banks give better rates to big customers) could or would that Joe Blow have gotten the same deal.

Ask Tool Time Tim
If you need a break on your taxes, just ask "Tool Time" Tim the Treasury Secretary.

Funny thing is that the ATF is under Treasury. A tax cheat is the Revenoooor-in-charge of makin' sure no one runs untaxed liquor at NASCAR events.

Maybe we can convince them (the ATF) that their boss is manufacturing meth, silencers and doing fully auto-jobs, and they can surround his palace with tanks and helicopters? It'd be a start.

DEAR IRS
(This is an actual letter written by a taxpayer in Texas, we should all mail one to IRS.)

I am sorry to inform you that I will not be able to pay taxes owed April 15, but all is not lost.

I have paid these taxes: accounts receivable tax, building permit tax, CDL tax, cigarette tax, corporate income tax, dog license tax, federal income tax, unemployment tax, gasoline tax, hunting license tax, fishing license tax, waterfowl stamp tax, inheritance tax, inventory tax, liquor tax, luxury tax, Medicare tax, city, school and county property tax (up 33 percent last 4 years), real estate tax, social security tax, road usage tax, toll road tax, state and city sales tax, recreational vehicle tax, state franchise tax, state unemployment tax, telephone federal excise tax, telephone federal state and local surcharge tax, telephone minimum usage surcharge tax, telephone state and local tax, utility tax, vehicle license registration tax, capitol gains tax, lease severance tax, oil and gas assessment tax, Colorado property tax, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and New Mexico sales tax, and many more that I can't recall but I have run out of space and money.

When you do not receive my check April 15, just know that it is an honest mistake. Please treat me the same way you treated Congressmen Charles Rangle, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank and ex-Congressman Tom Dashelle and, of course, your boss Timothy Geithner. No penalties and no interest.

P.S. I will make at least a partial payment as soon as I get my stimulus check.

Ed Barnett
