Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Arguably one of the hardest-working White House correspondents of the past three decades is Mark Knoller, heard every day on CBS Radio News and beyond.

This week, Mr. Knoller sat down with outgoing Vice President Dick Cheney, and in examining the transcript of the interview, it's not difficult to read between the lines:

Q: Do you think it is easier to run for president than to be president?

A: I do.

Q: In what ways? What is he [President-elect Barack Obama] facing that he doesn't realize?

A: Well, I've been through a lot of campaigns myself ... and the situation changes once you sit down in the Oval Office and begin to receive on a daily basis the president's daily brief -- intelligence briefing that the intelligence community pulls together and the CIA presents every morning about what's going on in the world, and about threats, threats to the homeland, problems we face overseas. And it is a tough, dangerous, complex world that we live in. And my experience has been, having been through 40 years in the business, that there's nothing like sitting down at the desk and having to deal with those problems to have a sobering effect on somebody's outlook and expectations.

Q: Both Barack Obama and Joe Biden have spent their political careers in legislatures. Now they're moving into the executive. Is that going to be a shock to their systems?

A: [W]hen you're the president of the United States, it's all on your platter. You are the ultimate decision-making authority. You're the one who is going to make those decisions about defending the nation, about committing troops, sending young men and women in harm's way. And you always hope that no president faces those choices, but certainly our experience has been you do. You can't get into that chair for four years without sooner or later having to address those basic fundamental decisions -- life aand death decisions, if you will -- about the fate of the nation. And it's different than being a member of a legislative body where you're one of 100 in the Senate, or one of 435 in the House.

LOUIS AND HILL

Of the countless celebrities descending on Washington for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration, few will have as hectic a schedule as Academy Award-winner Louis Gossett Jr.

Apart from hosting his Eracism Foundation's Inaugural Purple Ball on Jan. 20, the stage and screen actor will offer the official toast at the National Inaugural Jewish Ball on Jan. 18, sponsored by Ohev Sholom, the national synagogue where Mr. Gossett last year became the first black to preach a sermon in the synagogue's 122 year history.

If that's not enough on his inaugural plate, Mr. Gossett on Jan. 19 will host "Raising the Roof," a nationally televised tapestry of words and music honoring Martin Luther King and featuring the Boston Children's Chorus and the Young People's Chorus of New York City.

Peeking at the guest list for the PurpleBall, we find among others: Ashley Judd, Lisa Marie Presley, John Cusack, Herbie Hancock, Angela Bassett, Patricia Arquette, and Hill Harper.

Mr. Harper?

None other than Mr. Obama's college roommate when he attended Harvard.

OVERHEARD

That was Rep. Edward J. Markey, Massachusetts Democrat, and his wife, Susan Blumenthal, during the intermission of "West Side Story" at the National Theatre on Wednesday night, likening the battling "Sharks" and "Jets" to fighting Hamas and Israeli soldiers.

Or so the world would hope. In the musical, which runs through Jan. 17 prior to opening on Broadway, the warring New York City street gangs ultimately end the bloodshed and learn to co-exist.

West Side Story made its world premiere at the National Theatre in 1957.

LIBERAL OVERDOSE

There's a new chairman of the 100-plus-member House Republican Study Committee: Rep. Tom Price of Georgia, a medical doctor by practice.

"With complete liberal control of government, we are now presented both with an opportunity and an obligation to provide the American people with a clear, positive, conservative alternative to an irresponsible tax-hiking, 'big government' agenda," says Mr. Price.

The congressman replaces outgoing chairman Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas.

No Name
O is the man with no name. Nobody really knows who he is or what he is about.

Responsiblity
In his whole life, Obama has never been in a position where he was the responsible authority for anything more important than his role as a father, and even that he shares with his wife.

Someday soon, Obama will be presented with multiple choices concerning serious issues for the nation and for many individuals within that nation. He will find that none of those choices are "right", all will have flaws that could blow up in his (our?) face. He, and only he, will have to make decisions based on flawed and incomplete information while sorting through the biases of his advisors. That is the fundamental essence of the job he has sought so ardently. I wish him the joy of it.

I almost feel sorry for Obama
The expectations for the Obama presidency are so huge that he cannot fulfill even a fraction of them. I agree with many that the first to turn on him will be the blacks. In less than 2 years, Obama's approval ratings will drop below 40%.

The sad thing is that no president can satisfy the endless demands of an ignorant and spoiled population. Far too many of us are too lazy to work hard for what we desire, and too stupid to understand the long-term implications of socialism and welfare.

i truly wonder what you people read or listen to that is not total propagana. think out side of the box for once !!!

Tabitha917
Oh, Let me see?? I read The Local Papers, National Georgaphic , Archeology, US news & World Report and lots of other pubs.
I DON'T read Newsweek, Time and The NY Times anymore.. And Mr Sachs who writes for Scientific American is so FAR OUTSIDE the Box vivavis his views on rebuilding most of the 3rd World I had to let him go too!! But Colunbia still likes him so I'm sure he doesn't mind my desertion!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Tabitha917 - PUHLEASE
"i truly wonder what you people read or listen to that is not total propagana. think out side of the box for once !!!"

I don't listen to PROPAGANDA or, as you wrote, propagana.

I think "outside of the box" all of the time, which is why I use my own brain not the "propagana" spewed by either Dems or Reps.

Unfortunately for Obama
we live in a time where too many people are looking to government to take care of them. Realizing it and exploiting it in the pre-election times, Obama is now faced with trying to satisfy a lot of different groups and individuals saying "take care of me." Even now, he is trying to back off by saying that the national debt will be over a trillion for a number of years and things will get tougher before they get better. His bailout package being renamed the recovery package is so all over the place it tells me he doesn't know what he is doing but he is throwing a lot of money at the problem. Is that better then riding this out? Does he really know, I mean know, spending a trillion will do the job without causing more serious future problems?

Buckskin #11
Sad to say January 21, 2009 and beyond we will know.

loco - I would say "CLUELESS"
in answering your questions.

What will he do when all of us just quit and get in line? Since he said that "ONLY GOVERNMENT" can solve the economic problems and unemployment, let him try to figure out how to pay for this "4 Year Plan."

Thank God that we did not rely on "ONLY GOVERNMENT" to invent the telephone, lightbulb, or automobile. If we had, we would all be living in dark cabins without ever communicating with the outside or leaving the ranch.

Responsibility
I would love to hear Obama say "These are very hard times, but it is time to work hard and be accountable for our own lives, and take personal responsibility." Instead, he is saying that government will take care of everybody. Socialism does not work, it ruins everyone's incentive to succeed.

You wrote,"Far too many of us are too lazy to work hard for what we desire and too stupid to understand the longterm implications of socialism and welfare." So true, and that is exactly why democrats keep winning. They play on the stupidity of the people and actually encourage it by propping up ever worsening government schools who do nothing but brainwash our children with liberal drivel everyday such as global warming. Reading some of these posts I see terrible grammar and spelling and people not being able to express themselves intelligently. Having grown up in the 50's and 60's and having children in school in the 70's, 80's and 90's I noticed a big change in education such as 1 plus 1 equals 3 or whatever the child thought it should be. Moral relativism began at this time where one person's evil was not any worse than another's. If I had children in a government school right now I would do all I could to get them in a good private school or teach them myself. We need school choice and we need the government to stop educating our children. Unfortunately we have lost a generation as witnessed by how easily it was to sway them to a socialistic candidate. You young parents out there had better wake up. It will be you and your children who are going to have to save our nation. My generation let the ball drop and I am truly sorry.

The Pied Piper
The propaganda and demogoguery will continue, but now the Pied Piper that lured so many gullibles to vote for him will have to make real and consequential decisions. This will be the most on-the-job-training administration that has ever existed in American history. The big questions are; will we continue to have adequate protection against Islamic terrorism, and how far down the Road to Serfdom and Marxist Socialism will we slide? I suggest that everyone pray that God has mercy on America.

You and I
are contemporaries, give or take a few years, and I know what you are saying. We were able to compensate for some of the indoctrination our older kids rec'd and they are (at least my birth children, my adopted son has a ways to go)
broken glass conservatives. My youngest is even more conservative than his siblings, I was privileged to home school him from third grade through high school, only needing a math tutor in his upper grades. He's the college grad of the family (his two older brothers and one sis in law are Navy vets, and his sisters wives and mothers. ONly two of my 15 grandkids go to
public school and they aren't exposed to too much indoctrination but we are watching to make sure. Small town schools are a bit different than inner city zoos a.k.a. schools.) My kids know their citizenship and Constitution and my
advice to conservative parents, try to negate the liberal influences by talking and teaching when you have your kids home. Use that ingrained hero/heroine worship your kids award you.
LakewoodBob, I'm with you, this is mainly a spiritual war we are in and until believers realize it, we will be in big trouble. We, the
believers must forget the entertaining ear tickling churches and pastors and return to the Cross and Him Crucified and get on our knees
as commanded by 2 Chronicles 7:14. We arose
as a Constitutional Republic out of a prayer session in the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and we need to return to that prayer or we truly will be lost.

The 'Annointing'
January,20,2009 is when we should really start worrying. That is the day we will "Cross The Rubicon".

Tipping point
Just read an article by someone who says we are almost to the "tipping point" where there won't be enough people paying into the system to cover the payouts.(Read socialist, Marxist, democrat) I believe the turning point was Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society". We now have 4th generation welfare recipients and more and more people looking for government gimmees. The joy of earning what you need and the value of real personal accomplishment is lost on the liberal leftists. It seems to be all about taking from people who actually work for a living.

Ice Cream
"It’s all about the Ice Cream.

The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.
To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia’s mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Every one applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream.” She sat down. The class went wild. “Yes! Yes! We want ice cream.”
She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn’t sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it. She didn’t know. The class really didn’t care. All they were thinking about was ice cream. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a land slide.
Every time Barack Obama opens his mouth he offers ice cream, and fifty two percent of America reacts like nine year olds. They want ice cream. The other forty eight percent know they’re going to have to feed the cow."

Signalling the terrorists
Choosing Leon Panetta as head of the CIA is a loud and clear signal to Islamist terrorists that we are not serious anymore about the War on Terror. Expect to see explosions here soon. After all, if Obambi catches them, what is he going to do? Give them a lawyer and a federal court platform so they can make our legal system a mockery? OOOh, I'm scared.

Re: Buckskin
I watched a documentary recently that showed how Hitler got into power. He charged people to listen to him speak (as did Obama), the population was disinfranchised (as is America), it was financially troubled (as is America), and Hilter promised to fix every problem that the country faced. Once in power, GOVERNMENT TOOK OVER. I don't think it is so much Obama, but those he is surrounding himself with. They will use his inexperience to bring about the system they want. America has always been the most giving, helpful to other countrys. We have been the greatest and free countries around. After studying BHO what there is to study, he is socialistic. So was Hitler. We are a capitalist system. The only way to keep the government from becoming even more of the Big Brother that we have feared it is up to the conservatives of this country to stand up for what is right. The Jewish people didn't defend themselves as they didn't feel threatened. It wasn't just Jewish people but homosexuals, blacks, anyone that didn't have the same view as Hiltler. We have already seen the govenment officials not allow anyone with a critical vision of Obama to air it or print it. As the old saying goes "It isn't over till the fat lady sings", and that has yet to happen. So wake up Americans - white, black, gay, hispanic etc. I feel that our voice is suppose to matter. Obama is in for a rude awakening and it has already began with him trying to distance himself from anything negative - like the govenor of Illinois. Help us get our voice heard. I used this website. http://www.grassfire.org/111/petition.asp?Ref_ID=500023&PI D=19108928 Don't just judge Obama, make a stand for America. Ice cream is not the answer.
