Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Not that either elected official is hurting when it comes to household income, but President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. each will be getting a substantial raise by leaping from Capitol Hill to the White House.

The rundown of salaries for the executive and legislative branches, as of Jan. 1, 2008:

President: $400,000

Vice president: $221,100

House speaker: $188,100

Senators/congressmen: $169,300

Actually, Mr. Biden and his wife, Jill, probably can use the extra dough. She's a teacher, after all, and he's spent most of his professional career in the Senate (Mr. Biden also teaches part time at the Widener University School of Law).

The couple's 2007 joint tax return lists a total income of $319,853, all but $66,546 (Mrs. Biden's teaching salary) earned by the senator.

Meanwhile, Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, have seen their incomes increase in 2007 to more than $4.2 million, much of it coming from book royalties.

LIVE ELVIS

President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration is such a big deal that even Elvis is making an appearance.

The Creative Coalition of artists and entertainers says Elvis Costello will be the featured musical guest at its Inaugural Ball on Tuesday, Jan. 20, one of several balls throughout the city.

OH, HENRY

A heavy lineup of Washington VIPs, including tribute speakers who need no introduction - Colin Powell, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Alexander Haig and Alan Greenspan - will join senators and congressmen, as well as administration, military and diplomatic officials Tuesday evening as Henry Kissinger is presented with the prestigous American Patriot Award.

The National Defense University Foundation's black-tie gala honoring the former secretary of state and Nobel Peace Prize laureate will take place at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, just blocks from the White House.

Past recipients of the award include Mr. Powell, former President George H. W. Bush, the now-deceased former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger; former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole; Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, Hawaii Democrat ; former astronaut and Ohio Democratic Sen. John Glenn; Sen. John W. Warner, Virginia Republican; Rep. Ike Skelton, Missouri Democrat; and Sen. Ted Stevens, Alaska Republican.

MUMBAI COMING?

Perhaps the most eye-opening, scariest headline this week reads: "From Mumbai to Minneapolis, Why It Will Happen Here."

Douglas Hagmann, the author of the article published by Canada Free Press, is founder and director of the Pennsylvania-based Northeast Intelligence Network, which concentrates on battling and increasing public awareness of terrorism.

"Westerners in general, and Americans specifically have a serious case of memory deficit disorder," he writes. "This disorder will continue until the hallways of the Waldorf Astoria in New York, and the concourses at the Mall of America, for example, run with the blood of innocent men, women and children who have died because we have failed properly and unapologetically to deal with the threat of Islamic terrorism within this country."

Mr. Hagmann's hope is that "everyone takes a really deep, hard look at what happened last week in Mumbai, India, and at the terrorists who perpetrated the attack. And I hope this is done quickly, with a high degree of intellectual honesty and without the encumbrance of political correctness. The safety of every American, Canadian, Australian, and all Westerners, in fact depends on it, as does the security of our respective nations."

DUMBING DOWN?

TV news anchors, or at least those working for the Tribune Media Co., have been given the green light to shed their stiff on-air suits and ties.

Reads a recent memo from Tribune innovation guru Lee Abrams: "What with the suits and ties? I'm not suggesting sloppy ... but business casual ... maybe even eccentric as the Crime expert could be in a Columbo styled rumpled sweater."

Carter's Sweater Making a Comeback?
"Reads a recent memo from Tribune innovation guru Lee Abrams: 'What with the suits and ties? I'm not suggesting sloppy ... but business casual ... maybe even eccentric as the Crime expert could be in a Columbo styled rumpled sweater'."

Like "Business Casual" is going to allow us to believe them more? Most "journalists" are jokes and the idea of them in business casual or a "Columbo-styled rumpled sweater" will do nothing to impart wisdom upon the dimwits.

Should we look to see Obama wearing Jimmy Carter's sweater when discussing the supposed Climate Change problem, the need for all of us to drive "Minis" that are powered by electricity, or how we should turn the heat down and opt for the rumpled sweater?

People in this country had a big laugh back then. In fact, I remember the Carter Sweater Debacle clearly. People may not like what you are going to say or even believe you, but they would rather see people, whether reporters or Presidents, in suits than in rumpled sweaters.

But Denise, image is everything
and everyone knows that a suit is the image of the hated businessman or worse, CEO. Obamination will make that species extinct ASAP, so the media must not look like them.

OK, but if they don't want to look like hated businessmen, then they could dress like rappers or sports players or farmers or UAW workers or Rev. Wright's Sunday clothes... Just keep the rumpled, Colombo-style sweaters out of it. Will Hillary give up her "business-style" pantsuits so she can dress like, say, a Wal-Mart representative? Will Pelosi exchange her suits for a hemp pants and a Grateful Dead t-shirt? Will Charlie Rangel opt out of wearing his business suit and choose a tropical shirt like the ones he wears at his mansion in the Dominican Republic? Will Obama exchange his business suits for Hawaiian shirts and Kenyan hats? Of course not.

Regardless of what businessmen wear, there is an acceptable style of wardrobe that is in common usage by journalists, politicians, doctors, clergy, the Rev. Jackson and others in our country. Suits are worn by many, not just businessmen.

Image IS everything, but certain clothes are worn because the IMAGE of being professional and respectful IS everything.

Denise, chill ;>)
The Columbo look was designed to have the suspects underestimate, or as Bush would say misunderestimate, his abilities. No one can underestimate the ability of TV Journalists as they are beneath imagination as to how incompetent one can be.

Rich Not Wealthy, Smile - I'm Chillin'
Most of us know that the vast majority of MSM clearly lack imagination, competence, and fairness/truthfulness.

My point about Congress and other politicians is that they don't need to follow the inanity of some in the MSM. God knows, I have enough of Mardi Gras costumes 10 days out of every year. I just don't want to see people on television, who are supposed to be intelligent, appearing like they going to the parades of Rex and Zulu. Obviously, they can wear whatever they want while relaxing in front of a fire and reading the NYT, even if that is Jimmy Carter's cardigan or Colombo's rumpled sweater.

Besides, we all have those on the Jerry Springer Show and others on television if we want to "enjoy" diversity (not making any reference to race) in clothing, but suits and businessmen are not one in the same. I own my own business and wear jeans most of the time, except when I am in court practicing law.

All I know is that any kind of "business casual" clothing or rumpled sweaters needs to be worn when appropriate and not on television or in the Halls of Congress.

Smile.

Out of touch

You can see by the saleries these elected officials make why they are so out of touch with working people.

If Bill Clinton made $75,000 a year, he wouldn't be so quick to impose a tax on Senior Citizens Social Security benefits as he did in 1993.

Yes Politicians work long hours. But the only reason they work long hours is because they have imposed themselves on every aspect of our lives.

If the Federal Government got out of education, there would be no reason to spend late nights in Washington debating education funding.

These are self inflicted problems.

Obama's book royalties
How many books by the so-called "liberals" make back their advances?

This sounds to me like a money laundering scheme to slip some payola to the politician, sort of like Clinton's speaking fees.

Kissinger
Kissinger sold us out in Vietnam and cost us lives. The 11 day Christmas campaign of 1972 had the war won but Kissinger , et al stopped the bombing before the peace negotiations thereby relieving the pressure on the North Vietnemese before settlement. We had them by the neck, they were done, and we just walked away and deserted our friends and tainted the heroic efforts of our dead. Every white cross in Arlington cemetery weeps when Kissinger's name is mentioned and now he is to be honored with a Patriots Award. I too weep; I wish I had enough tears to cry for the almost 59,000 brave Americans whose names are etched on the Black Wall Memorial.

Warrior...
Well said brother. Amen.
