Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

How ironic, Janet Langhart Cohen observed yesterday, that it is a black person, Barack Obama, who has been called up to the podium to answer to the deep racial divides that have existed in the United States for centuries.

"Think of the irony of that. Only in America," said the playwright, author, former TV journalist and wife of former Defense Secretary William S. Cohen.

Mrs. Cohen will expand on the race issue as it pertains to the presidential election in Monday's column, but we wanted to first report that she adds yet another title to her name, "Queen Esther, Hadassah," when she marches today in the Purim parade through Washington.

Born with Jewish roots, like her husband, Mrs. Cohen is using the honor of being selected Queen Esther to draw attention to the racism and anti-Semitism that remain so prevalent throughout the world and in this country in particular.

She notes that Queen Esther successfully appealed for Jewish people to be spared from massacre on the 13th day of Adar. Jews celebrated on the 14th day, and the walled city of Jericho rejoiced on the 15th day when the news arrived there. Thus, the three-day observance.

Similarly, Mrs. Cohen pointed out, the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution abolished slavery, granted citizenship to former slaves and gave black men the right to vote.

All of which segues to her latest project, a one-act play titled "Anne and Emmett" that draws historical parallels between the lives of Anne Frank and Emmett Till, teen victims of anti-Semitism and racism. The play has its first U.S. reading at Emerson College in Boston on April 10, during Holocaust Remembrance Month and shortly after the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King.

"It's an amazing play, it really came through me," Mrs. Cohen told Inside the Beltway. "With all the recent cases of anti-Semitism, Mel Gibson's derogatory comments, the whole issue of race in America and what is now coming out in the [presidential] campaign, Anne and Emmett couldn't be more timely."

Boxers for Barack

Supporters of Barack Obama are coming up with some unique party themes when hosting fundraising events for the Democratic presidential candidate, such as playing "Barack Jeopardy," "Running With Obama," "Wine Tasting With Obama," even "Praying for Obama."

Michael Romelotti, a member of the Washington-area boxing community, now is planning a "Boxing for Barack" exhibition — in Clinton, Md., no less — featuring several amateur and professional bouts.

"Washington, D.C., is a hotbed of boxing talent," he notes. "Several professional boxers are current title holders or ranked in the top 10."

Worth noting

Extend congratulations to Christopher Hunsberger of the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown for winning the Stars of the Industry Awards' "Outstanding General Manager of the Year" honors.

Mr. Hunsberger has been the Washington general manager for more than eight years, also serving as regional vice president for the luxury hotel property.

'Aunt Wijtska'

Opening our mailbag we find readers commenting on the Democratic infighting, particularly after the Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign accused the Barack Obama campaign of voting irregularities in Texas — from locking Mrs. Clinton's supporters out of caucus sites to filling out precinct convention sign-in sheets during the day and submitting them as completed vote totals.

A woman who asks to be identified by her initials, T.D., writes: "As a Republican Party election judge in Fort Worth, Texas, on primary day, I can attest that the Democratic Party judges were nothing short of incompetent. Indeed, as a sworn election official, I spent much of my time helping them because they didn't know how to conduct a legal election. ... They have only themselves to blame for any problems with the election."

Meanwhile, hours after we posted our "Trace your roots" item yesterday — observing that the National Archives for the first time is making available online more than 5.2 million records transcribed from original ship manifests of some of the passengers who arrived during the last half of the 19th century at the ports of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and New Orleans — we received this note from Joe Brouwer of Bainbridge Island, Wash.:

"Thank you so much for the heads up on the Web site. Manifest No.'s 4, 5 and 6 — Grampa, Grandma and my Aunt Wijtska. As I looked at my family, I started looking down the list noticing families and individuals from different countries, pondering on that moment, their past and future. Very touching indeed."

Oops
Didn't want to leave out Boutte.

and to JDW: "The Constitution doesn't "give" rights. It protects them." That's a nice thought, but in real life, the government can
give and it can take away. And it does so on
a regular basis.

Bob and Bluepiper
The Democratic party is where racism thrives?!?!

Yeh, uh huh.

I think it would be a safer bet to say it thrives with the two of you.

Condi and Powell are example of success
Why in the world was Obama digging himself into the grave of racial despair? Is he so full of negativism and victimization that Obama is blind to any success by the African-Americans today in business or in politics? Good grief, you would think the civil war just ended and that our nation was still in the middle of reconciliation.

How about giving some credit to Robert Johnson of Ebony magazine and BET TV? How about giving some credit for Colin Powell and Condi Rice for their years of seeking an education, putting in years of work to become successful people today rather than marching in protests?

Why must Yankees who fought in the civil war to end slavery, and the white president who ended slavery be buried in any mention of standing up against the horrors of slavery? And why must every generation of white people be dragged in the mud by those like Pastor White, a man who grew up in a successful part of town with successful parents? Is Pastor White so full of anger at the success of his own parents that he can not even celebrate the joys of success as an African-American leader?

There are so many successful Republicans and Democrats who are African-American, that I think Obama just ignored all of them in order to cover up for the outrageous comments by Pastor White.
IF OBAMA IS DEFEATED BY HILLARY, IT IS BECAUSE OF HIS OWN RACIAL COMMENTS AND LACK OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE RACES.

Try again
You really should study the philosophy behind the founding of the country.

"Similarly, Mrs. Cohen pointed out, the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution abolished slavery, granted citizenship to former slaves and gave black men the right to vote."

The Constitution doesn't "give" rights. It protects them.

So today he's black?
"How ironic, Janet Langhart Cohen observed yesterday, that it is a black person, Barack Obama, who has been called up to the podium to answer to the deep racial divides that have existed in the United States for centuries."

Or are we subscribing to the philosophy that one drop of blood a black makes?

Konniebay is right on
Could not have said it better Konniebay. You hit the nail on the head. The one thing I would add is something all the media is ignoring. This race and hate issue is happening within the Democrat Party. Obama is running against Billary in a Primary election and the party of diversity has been exposed for all to see where racism thrives. This is between Billary and Obama. BobNews

OBAMA IS NOT BLACK
What is with the media that they have to keep calling Obama a black man - an "African-American"?????

Obama is just as much white as he is black, and he is not from some place called Africa-America because there is no such place.

Obama is neither black nor white, but half of each, which means to focus on one half is racism towards the other. Why do we hear so little about his "whiteness": is it because he hates that part of himself? I think so, since he attends a very racist church with a very racist "pastor."

AH, racism. It will never end as long as the liberals keep the blacks victims.

hey Boutte
You forgot Roy Cohn, the Rosenbergs and the conspriacy of Jews in 9/11.

Why don't YOU write the play, book, screenplay or blog of your own to inform the ignorant masses? I'm sure you'll find quite a market for it, you know an artist these days and write anything they please without censor. That's the beauty of this free country.

Whether or not you'll get rich from the great Jewish entertainment media mafia from doing so, well...remains to be seen. Whether that matters, is up to you.
The door, my good fellow IS open to you.

That kind of Immunity is dangerous
Spinning peoples words into something that they never meant to say is a wrong habit that needs to be broken. We have seen it played out before us so much, that we honestly believe that this is the right way to dialog with another human being. This twisting of another’s words, is blocking meaningful understanding of any kind and has become the national pass time of Washington and the press for about sixteen years or more. EAch faction bashing the other faction with their word twisting.

I think we should try to break that nasty habit, and wait to rush to judgment when someone you don't particularly like speaks. And find out exactly what they mean, that is if your intentions are honest.

This is the adult way: Waiting until someone finishes what they say for one, and then asking them the simple questions like, "What do you mean by those words exactly?" Or "Can I take it that you have anger towards your grandmother and want to take this time to attack her in public in the same way that you are accusing America of attacking the black man?"

If your motive is to harm, divide, and polarize so that you can have your particular brand of right, meaning you want everyone to stop thinking or speaking words other than what you approve of, you will spin every word others say and make so much noise that no one will really hear the truth that may be coming from another human being.

If you don't know what I mean just watch Hillary by comparing the words someone says, to what she repeats that they said, and in no time you will understand.

Wrong...
Ms Cohen is just plain wrong. Barack Obama was not called to the podium to address the racial divides this country has experienced for decades. Barack Obama was called to the podium to address the hate speech of his mentor, his 20-year membership in Trinity Church and support for a pastor who hates America. He says he cannot cast the pastor aside, which means he is basically a racist himself. He made the speech about race and in so doing has declared himself THE black candidate. His speech was a very bad mistake. He fell right into the Clinton's game. He was the man who could unite everyone..now, he's just the black candidate and just another lying politician...who by the way threw his white grandmother under the bus to do it.

As the laments get weepier
Almost daily, I get more and more immune from these slobbering whiners.

quote:
Born with Jewish roots, like her husband, Mrs. Cohen is using the honor of being selected Queen Esther to draw attention to the racism and anti-Semitism that remain so prevalent throughout the world and in this country in particular.

I would like to draw attention to how sick and tired all the whining going on today is making me.
