Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Hot head

Get a load of the somewhat threatening letter sent by the head of a national energy council to Marlo Lewis, senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, in response to an article the latter penned in the American Spectator about the various "global warming" bills introduced in Congress and their potential economic impact.

"Marlo, you are so full of crap," writes Michael T. Eckhart, president of the American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE). "You have been proven wrong. The entire world has proven you wrong. You are the last guy on Earth to get it.

"Take this warning from me, Marlo. It is my intention to destroy your career as a liar. If you produce one more editorial against climate change, I will launch a campaign against your professional integrity. I will call you a liar and charlatan to the Harvard community of which you and I are members. I will call you out as a man who has been bought by Corporate America. Go ahead, guy. Take me on."

Inside the Beltway reached Mr. Eckhart at his home yesterday, and he confirmed he did in fact write the letter.

Colony of Mexico

Is the United States of America being colonized all over again?

Don't think such a scenario is far-fetched, says a congressman — albeit the "colonists" of today are owing allegiance to their home country while "exploiting the new land."

"I asked ... whether or not the United States of America is becoming a colony," Rep. Ted Poe, Texas Republican, said in a recent speech, pointing a "valid" finger directly at the illegal aliens from Mexico.

"They pledge allegiance to another flag, many to the Mexican flag, not to the American flag. And that is the current problem with many illegals in this nation; they want to be colonists, not citizens," Mr. Poe opined.

The congressman, a former Texas judge, said illegal aliens accept all the benefits from the United States, but "they refuse to learn the language, they refuse to assimilate, and most importantly, they refuse to be loyal to this nation."

Lo and behold

Yes, that is $100,000 of your hard-earned federal taxpayer dollars destined for "signage and streetscape improvements for the Los Angeles fashion district."

But let's not single out California as the sole beneficiary of the "egregious pork" projects spilling out of the 2008 House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies (THUD) Act, as called to our attention by Citizens Against Government Waste.

Closer to home, there is the $250,000 lump sum earmarked for infrastructure renovations for "awnings" in the historic market of Roanoke.

Otherwise, hats off to Guam Democratic Delegate Madeleine Bordallo for actually inserting into the bill a $200,000 payment for sidewalks, street furniture and facade improvements all the way across the Pacific Ocean in the Guam town of Tamuning.

Owing a Frenchman

When writing late last week about Washington's 2007 Bastille Day Races & Celebration, Inside the Beltway noted that restaurant sponsor Brasserie Les Halles' menu for this month is drawn from the historical 1824 return to Washington (after a 39-year absence) of the French general le Marquis de Lafayette, who, lest we forget, played an essential role — both physically and financially — in the American Revolution.

"Thanks for mentioning Lafayette in your article," writes Jonathan D. Rudman of Navarre, Fla. "While I was in the active duty Air Force, and stationed in Germany from 1999-2003, I took the family to Paris. Included in the stops to the Eiffel Tower, Arch de Triomphe, etc., was a trip to Picpus cemetery to visit the final resting place of the Marquis de Lafayette.

"Most Parisians we knew did not know about Lafayette or Picpus cemetery, and it is unfortunate that many Americans do not either," he pointed out.

To refresh our memories, it was after the fall of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, that French aristocrats and politicos alike were sent to the guillotine — their headless bodies later buried together in a mass grave outside a previously peaceful Paris convent.

Among the decapitated, it so happens, were numerous relatives of Lafayette's wife, who, wishing to be buried near the headless souls, actually purchased a plot at Picpus for herself and her husband, the famous general.

Today, the few tourists who visit "Conservator Cimetiere de Picpus" need only look for the American flag, which is displayed above Lafayette's grave.

No surprise
"You have been proven wrong. The entire world has proven you wrong. You are the last guy on Earth to get it."

Isn't that about the extent of most of the liberal argument on the subject that has appeared here anyway?

Text of my e-mail to Michael Eckhart
You say of Marlo Lewis, "You have been proven wrong. The entire world has proven you wrong. You are the last guy on Earth to get it."

Well, sir, I consider myself an inhabitant of this world. I have not proved (the correct acceptable form of the word "prove") Marlo Lewis to be wrong. And apparently Mr. Lewis is NOT the last guy on Earth to get it. Count me in with that group, as well as many (if not most) rational, sane individuals that I know. How can you make a statement involving "[t]he entire world," when you know full well that the entire world is not in agreement on any one subject? That is what people do as a last line of defense, sir. They say, "Well, everyone else agrees with me! Why don't you?" That, sir, is pathetic.

You go on to say:

"Take this warning from me, Marlo. It is my intention to destroy your career as a liar. If you produce one more editorial against climate change, I will launch a campaign against your professional integrity. I will call you a liar and charlatan to the Harvard community of which you and I are members. I will call you out as a man who has been bought by Corporate America. Go ahead, guy. Take me on."

Well, sir, take this warning (actually, more like a threat, as were your words directed at Mr. Lewis): that if you continue to attempt to suppress facts, dialogue and debate about the issue of global warming, I will spread your hate and lies as far as my reach allows. As you know, in the Internet Age, that reach can be quite long. It is my intention to expose you as a fearmonger and bully, as well as a bold-faced liar. I will call you out as a man who has been bought and paid for by the global warming industry, which is nothing more than a front to obtain and redistribute billions, if not trillions, of dollars to the supporters of its cause.

Go ahead, big guy. Take us on. Your fight goes much further than Marlo Lewis. And I will join in that fight against you, as will millions of other members of the American community of which you and I are both members. This may not frighten you very much, but I doubt Mr. Lewis was concerned at all by your diatribe.

Have a nice day. The sun is shining.

I THINK WE'RE COOLING...

My left wing Michigan is the coolest in 20 years? I don't hear any complaints about it. It is now the mid-70's in July, and we're used to the mid-90's. But not a left-wing peep!

The problem remains unfortunate... We on Earth will burn all of the Oil, regardless of the increases in the "Gore-Tax".

So, if the US goes Oil-free, the rest of the world will burn it for us. What to do then? Have a War?

Fair's fair
"It is my intention to destroy your career as a liar. If you produce one more editorial against climate change, I will launch a campaign against your professional integrity. I will call you a liar and charlatan to the Harvard community of which you and I are members. I will call you out as a man who has been bought by Corporate America. Go ahead, guy. Take me on."

So, what's the problem. The guy from the CEI lies about the science and he's being called on it. Big deal. Should he be allowed to get away with lying?

Oh my God, people are threatening liars now! Is nothing sacred?

Eckhart to ruin Lewis' career? LOL

Ruined career? Lewis is getting off easy.. Many who have written and spoken the reality of "Ga-lo-Bull Warming" have received 'death threats' from the crazed, delusional, hateful, feeble-minded liberal gw whiners.

Right, Eckhart ought to just try to do that... after writing that letter to Lewis, it just shows what a brainless idiot Eckhart truly is.

"Marlo, you are so full of crap," writes Michael T. Eckhart,..." LOL That should be embarrassing to the "writer."

Anyone who dares criticize AGW publicly
...gets the same treatment from the warm-mongers.

I've received innumerable E-mails at Eternity Road that are essentially indistinguishable from the one Mr. Lewis received. I've also received notes that were far more profane...and far more threatening.

The gloves are off. Now that intelligent questions are being asked -- and answered -- about the dubious science behind anthropogenic global warming a.k.a. climate change, the warm-mongers have "gone to the mattresses:" they've decided to try to silence the opposition with a large-scale campaign of insult and intimidation.

It is the duty of good men in our day to resist with all our forces. Nothing has been as effective at abridging the liberties of Americans as phony eco-crises, especially when promoted by the Old Media and the glitterati. If we don't stand staunch here, it might prove to be our last opportunity to stand staunch at all.

YOU are freedom's last line of defense. Hold your position.

tron5000
Your 7/16/7 post was great.
Mr. Eckhart may wish to clean his own house.
What goes around comes around

And i think, also, Mr. Eckhart, you are of a lower form of life than the average bloke.

E-mail for Eckhard?
Can you post his e-mail and I will send him my opinion as well?

We in Toronto have gone back to the customary summer weather -- 60s at night ("good sleeping weather" as we call it here) and mid-70s in the daytime. The old joke used to be "75 again today! No relief in sight!" Oh, and gas prices are down below $1 per litre (about $4.00 per gallon for you Americans) too.

AND last night we Americans and those Proles who have backbones helped defeat the biggest socialist tax grab in the history of the city. Well, we deferred it, but the Mayor did not get what he wanted for the first time since he has been elected.

If we the people would only realize that we are no longer in High School, and there is no real threat in "You are Unpopular", a good deal more would be done that would be good.

haha
"The gloves are off. Now that intelligent questions are being asked -- and answered -- about the dubious science behind anthropogenic global warming"

1) Your questions aren't intelligent.
2) Your answers are wrong.
3) You guys love being victims.

Is anyone REALLY all that surprised

...that Eckhart has issued a FATWA to his Greenie Goons against Marlo Lewis?

Tron5000 you NAILED it!

Global Warming
Slightly off-topic from the Eckhardt threat, but do you notice that when evidence of cooling is introduced into the argument about "Global Warming," that the hysterics shift to "Climate Change?" Climate Change covers every weather event from tornados, hurricanes, El Ninio, La Ninia, floods, droughts. So far they don't try to claim earthquakes are due to high CO2 levels. The way the argument is framed by the Left, they win no matter what the weather is like.

Reminds me of Bush's problem in the WOT -- if he is aggressive and successful, he (and we) are "bullies." If he's careful and respectful of Iraqi lives, then the lack of swift progress in wiping out terrorists is "unsuccessful."

It helps that the Left controls most media so that they get to choose and frame the news.

I KNOW WHAT CAUSES GLOBAL WARMING!
It is The Sun reflecting off The Tin-Foil Hats of The Enviro-Nazi Gestapo. They are always SCREECHING about Halliburton and The Bush Administration. I think Congress should launch an Investigation into links between ALCOA and Al Gore.

You may want to stock up on Reynolds Wrap. With Ronnie Paul’s ALCOAettes and Al Gore’s Enviro-Nazi Gestapo needing new hats constantly. ALCOA stock is likely to skyrocket and availability of Reynolds Wrap is likely to plummet.

Colonists
Did anyone besides me see Lou Dobbs last night? He reported that 70 to 80 percent of all pot grown in the United States, is grown by Mexico. And 50% of that is grown in California.

The Mexican drug cartels have set up "Plantations in our national parks. In California, Washington, Tennessee, Kentucky, and I think Oregon. The U.S. government ( our drug Czar) is saying it is an invasion, and they have lost control.

They are warning people visiting National Parks to be careful because of these "gardens," that are guarded by armed Mexican drug dealers.

Why oh why isn't something being done? I'm at a total loss!!

ACORE
Come on guys ACORE has a staff of 4 lives in Washington DC on an annual budget of 1 million dollars, and your worried about what their president has to say on any issue. Any body who believes that the renewable energy industry rises or falls on the global warming issue, is nothing but a 21st century snake oil salesman and should be treated as such.

Evidence of the Disease of Liberalism
It just goes to show you that even top notch intellectual Harvard grads can suffer from this hideous disease. I wonder if Eckhart used this tactic in debate class at Harvard. If you can't convince them with propaganda, then just threaten them? LOL, that's mature!

If only true science mattered in this debate on global warming instead of politics.

Crimson
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but many scientists who study this for a living say that this is an unresolved issue.

To Tron5000, Frances & George
What a delight to read your responses to the idiotic discourse from that punk left-loon--
They really love to put it out there to let the world know how WEIRD they really are. His threats sound as though they could be legally
liable!! So very TOO MUCH!!!
ALMOST makes one wish he posted here, to see just how much pelting he could take!

Georgetwin
Good point, but the tinfoil hats would actually increase the albedo (aka reflectivity) of the earth's surface and reduce global warming, if it existed in the first place.

Here'e how we solve the problem: Everyone start wearing those silver fireman suits. The farmers who get paid to grow nothing could spread foil over the unsued fields in the summer. We could nuke China and kill 75% of them, thus reducing their population to that of the U.S., and reduce their "carbon footprint". Added bonus -the smoke would counteract global warming (if it existed). Finally, Owlgore could a) stop talking and b) move into a cave.

Michael Eckhart
For those wishing to e-mail Mr. Eckhart to take him on, you can reach him at http://www.acore.org. I'd like to forward Tron5000's post to him, but he should do it himself if he wishes to. For such an august body as ACORE to have a crude, egotistic, bullying, anti-intellectual president is a disgrace to the orgnization. He responds to criticism about as well as do Muslims.

Art
Maybe next he'll give Marlo Lewis the "Salman Rushdie" treatment.

GW Liars
The consequences put forth of a 1 degree change in temperature over the last 10000 years should not be debated. It is evident that there will be no consequences because we have not experienced any consequences. New York is still above sea level and will be 10000 years from now. Its a non debatable given, based on the opinion of thousands of Scientists.

Salman Rushdie Treatment
Death to the infidel crusaders who insult the holy precepts and revered prophets of AGW. Off with their heads!!

Crimson
Is that moniker a reflection of a condition? Perhaps you spend too much time in the sun, my friend. You know, that ball of fire in the sky that gives off heat and light making life possible, . . yeah, life that is "carbon - based", . . you know, carbon, which your buddies claim is toxic. Why is it that mars is heating up at the same rate as the earth? Oh, of course its all those SUVs the RNC secretly sent up to track the rover!

But, hey, you've detailed the argument for AGW so eloquently here, I should not ask any questions. Please accept my humble apology!

Hmmm...

Now that Eckhart has done a sort of "We will bury you," I wonder when he will take off his shoe and start pounding it on the table.

Art's Salman Rusdie Treatment
Thank you for the humor. I find it very funny.

I don't know how many times I've entered into the GW argument armed with sound science. I learned a long time ago that it's useless to argue with folks who employ horse hockey logic. Of course many of these have come to realize that they can't convince us with their lack of facts so they want to, instead, dazzle us with their bs, hockey stick graphs, and resort to threats. Mr. Eckart fails to realize that it's a two-way street when it comes to making and carrying out threats.

Earl
Hey, I brought up Salman Rushdie to begin with!

New Movie This Summer
Okay, the movie is called "Conspiracy" and it starts in Dallas in 1963.

We see flashbacks of Lee Harvey Oswald talking to members of the CIA, including Daddy Bush and Jr (ominous music). Then cut to him being slain by the nefarious Jack Ruby (actual footage).

Skipping ahead 25 years, there is actual footage of Bush 41 taking office, then "secret video" of him meeting with oil sheiks and car executives. The plot is twofold: 1) Secretly transport oil, SUVs and Hummers to Mars to warm it up (half of NASA is in on it), and 2) plot to blow up the WTC in case Bush 41's son becomes president someday, so he can have a chance to attack Saddam Hussein.

Finally, spirit the Saudis out of the U.S. after the day Bush 41 dreamed of, 9/11/01. At the end of the movie, Bush 41 dies (in the movie there is some music and a montage of Sadaam Hussein, Dick Cheney, and unnamed extras in Arabic garb), and Bush 43 retires from the White House and lives comfortably in a Saudi compound with gold fixtures.

Written and directed by Michael Moore
Starring: Owlgore and Sean Penn

Eckhart's e-mail address
Someone asked for it. Here it is:

meckhart@acore.org

I'm sure he'd love to hear from you guys! Although, he hasn't responded to my e-mail yet...

Don't worry, Art
I posted here the actual e-mail that I sent to Eckhart. I sent him the letter, then copied the text to post here.

The Martian ice caps are receding...
Must be all those Martian SUVs......

nanna
I went to the Lou Dobbs CNN web site but did not see that story. I would like to read it, can you post the URL for us for that or could someone who can find it as I really want to see that.

Crimson Carping
Isn't it wonderful how the same people who call us names and claim our arguments are not "intelligent" never bother to share their wonderful proof and evidence.

I never stop hearing about the mounds and mounds of evidence supporting their Hot Air theory but they never bother to share it. When you press them on these sites, the best they can do is paste a URL that I guess takes you to where the wisdom is found. When you are foolish enough to navigate to the site they present you're supposed to be a mind reader to figure out what they want you to look at that is the 'evidence' they're touting. Then they finish by calling you a name and talking about how evil Exxon is and anyone who is associated with them.

Oh well have to go, time to put the Tiger in my tank on the way home.

Eckhart Response
To All Readers of this Blog:

The correspondence between Marlo Lewis and Mike Eckhart should be taken in context. Below for your background information is the original response posted by Mr. Eckhart on July 15th on the ACORE blog.

Thank you for reading this background material.

Jim Pierobon & The ACORE Communications Staff
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To All:

The Competitive Enterprise Institute has made public a July 13, 2007 email that I sent to Dr. Marlo Lewis, CEI’s chief analyst on climate change. This private communication to Dr. Lewis is part of a two-year series of communications between us about CEI’s campaign to stop public policy on global warming. The campaign is led by Fred Smith, CEI’s President, and Dr. Lewis.
I apologize to all in the public who were offended by the email, because it was not intended for public display. You could not be aware of the two-year context of it, nor the choice of words in it – words that were only significant to Dr. Lewis and myself. Now that it is in the public, however, everyone deserves to understand the context.

Summary

I believe that global warming is occurring. The evidence is overwhelming and persuasive both from a statistical as well as anecdotal basis. Last year, the President of the National Wildlife Federation told the story about how a multi-billion duck hunting industry in Arkansas has disappeared – the ducks only fly south to Illinois any more.

Recently, we have learned about the acidification of the oceans and the attendant accelerated loss of coral and other marine life.
This week, credible scientific organizations will predict that the North Pole will no longer have ice in the summer, beginning just ten years from now. Glaciers are melting. If the ice bank on Greenland melts, the seas could rise as much as 20 feet. This is serious business, affecting all.

In my opinion, CEI, and especially Dr. Lewis, has been presenting a false prosecution — a knowingly false prosecution — of the global warming issue, to the detriment of society and the billions of people who will be affected by climate change. This should offend all who believe in integrity and honesty in public affairs.

Dr. Lewis admitted to me two years ago that he does not necessarily believe that global warming is not happening – he is pursuing it for another reason: his philosophical opposition to big government. He has hijacked our issue to further his philosophical ideas about government. I respectfully object.

My email to Dr. Lewis was in the context of personal combat and jousting that has been going on in the background — using his own words, as described below, to prod him out this false prosecution of global warming.

Background

The interchange and jousting began two years ago when Dr. Lewis and I were invited to debate the issue on E&E TV, and we had 20 minutes to talk beforehand in the green room. It was a 20-minute monologue by Dr. Lewis.

He informed us that he is a trained professional debater from Harvard University with a PhD in Philosophy, but that he came out of the experience with the opposite philosophy of most Harvard graduates who believe that government is the solution to society’s problems. He said that he believes that it is excessive government that is the root of most problems in modern society, and that big government must be stopped. He said that one of his life’s goals is to show the Harvard crowd that they are wrong.
He went on the say that environmentalists are, in his view, “just full of cr*p” and that they are falsely using the threat of climate change to gain control of the power of government. He said that he has a permanent dedication to destroy their careers, hence my use of the same phrases. His method, based on his training in philosophical argument, is not to attack them, but to attack their underlying assumptions, in this case the technical arguments that global warming is happening.

I asked him, then: “so your argument against global warming is just a tactic in a larger battle you are waging against big government?” He said: “Yes, correct.”

Dr. Lewis went on to say that he might just as easily make the argument that global warming IS happening, and that, actually, he is a bit concerned about it, but he could not let that sidetrack him from his life’s work to stop big government.

I then asked if there was any possibility that we could talk him into joining the climate change movement and take the lead on developing non-government solutions, since he is against government solutions. He said that this was an intriguing idea, but, no, he couldn’t do it. He said that his job is not to be a consultant on solutions; his mission is to stop big government.
We were called into the studio and I concluded by saying that I had never met such a brilliant mind that was, in my opinion, so off track on intellectual honesty, and asked if he thought it would consider it fair play if I tried to stop him as much as he is trying to stop us. He said: “fair is fair” and we went into the televised debate.

A member of my staff was with us in the Green Room. You will see Dr. Lewis’ own words in my July 13 email.

Subsequent Communications

Since that first event, Dr. Lewis and Fred Smith and I have discussed on several occasions the honesty or dishonesty of hijacking the global warming issue to further their philosophy about making government smaller. I confronted Fred Smith on this in May 2006. There have been several exchanges.

For example:

On September 22, 2006, Dr. Lewis sent a campaign email saying: “I attach for your reading pleasure the latest version of my Skeptic’s Guide to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth.”
In reply, on September 25, I wrote to Fred Smith and Marlo Lewis: “I am writing to say that I am very unhappy to see this continuing false analysis coming out of CEI, seeking to refute the issue of global warming. What concerns me is that you are credible and persuasive, hence your voice and that of CEI are having the effect of delaying a US response to the crisis. The only explanation that I can see is that you are doing this because you are paid by ExxonMobil and other clients to do so. I find this outrageous, that my children will have a lesser life because you are being paid by oil companies to spread a false story.”

On September 26, Dr. Lewis wrote back to me: “Talk about an inconvenient truth! How inconvenient for some people that fossil fuels played an indispensable role in ending slavery and serfdom, extending human lifespan, etc.”
This was clearly going no where, and it rested for a while.

Turning the Corner on the Acceptance of Global Warming

Coincidently, however, I was informed that ExxonMobil ended its many years of funding CEI’s anti-climate campaign the following month, at the time of a speech by ExxonMobil’s CEO Rex W. Tillerson to the Boston CEO Club on November 30, 2006, in which he said:

“While the scientific community continues this study, we should pursue public policies that start gradually and learn along the way with full recognition of the economic consequences of certain actions and we should bring all countries into the effort…We should start on a path to reduce the likelihood of the worst outcomes… and understand the context of managing carbon emissions among other developing world priorities, such as economic development, poverty eradication and public health. Consistent with this approach, we should take steps now to reduce emissions in effective and meaningful ways.”

The most conservative companies in the oil industry are turning the corner on the global warming issue in a thoughtful and honest way. We also are seeing the electric utility industry study the matter carefully, recognizing that the future is a carbon-constrained world and they must find practical ways of working in it. And many serious people from industry, finance, the professions, academia, commerce, the nonprofit sector and government have looked at this and concluded that we as a society must take action now, for the sake of society as we know it, and for the sake of the generations who come after us.

The Issue Today

In the face of this came another analysis by Dr. Lewis this past week on July 12, undermining the inconvenient and now compelling truth about global warming, and I said: ‘enough is enough.” I challenged Dr. Lewis using his own words from that Green Room conversation two years ago, and challenged him to take me on, to resolve this issue. I have challenged him to debate this out, but he refuses, instead leaking my jousting email to him.

As to the email, there can be no excuse for it in the public’s eye, or out of the context of years of communications in the background. I apologize to all who have read it.

To CEI, however, there can be no apology. Quite the opposite. It is time to end CEI’s disingenuous undermining of worldwide concern about global warming. To resolve this, I again challenge Dr. Lewis to a series of personal debates on global warming that would go on for a month, with daily exchanges. There would be a running public vote. We would agree to accept the vote of the American people on the debate.
We must begin a nonpartisan, bi-partisan, and universal move forward to manage carbon in society and implement solutions in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, other non/low-carbon energy, and the management of oceans, biodiversity and forestation.
I believe that a cleaner world will be a more productive world with more security, longer lives, broader equity, more peace, more prosperity, and greater freedom than the status quo can possibly offer. It will not be big government delivering a solution, but the entire complex of government, the private sector and civil society adapting to a better path.
I believe that an open debate on these issues will reveal the truth of the matter. I call Dr. Lewis out of his analytic hideaway at CEI.
I will be happy to debate this out with Dr. Lewis and seek an answer, and again apologize to everyone for having the private email communication leaked to the press, distracting everyone from the serious matters at hand.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael T. Eckhart
