Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

When the average person thinks "evil," he thinks of a cruelly-featured, sneering, bestial man wickedly twirling his mustache as he draws perverse delight from inflicting misery on his fellow human beings.

People who fit the almost cartoonish definition we've grown accustomed to viewing as evil, certainly do exist -- and we hear about those dictators, serial killers, hit men, & psychopaths on the nightly news.

But, it's a mistake to believe that those are the only people who do evil or that only activities that rise to the level of murder, rape, or armed robbery are sins. The worst of the worst may deserve especially strong condemnation, but small cruelties committed by unthinking people -- who view themselves as good and just, despite their sometimes malicious actions -- have done more than most people realize to spread evil, degrade civilization, and drag our culture into the sewers.

That's the everyday reality we live with, especially in prosperous, civilized nations like America. For the average person, on a typical day, the evil that comes into his life isn't from some modern day Snidely Whiplash; it's from other ordinary people: his co-workers and random folks he passes on the street during his everyday life.

Yes, "good people" can and often do perform evil acts that should be incompatible with their view of themselves as decent human beings. Unfortunately, it's our nature to lapse into malevolent behavior sometimes and if we're not paying attention, we can sometimes engage in it for quite a while without even truly realizing how far we've drifted from our values.

With that in mind, evil is...

1) Anonymously emailing death threats.

2) Suing someone who did nothing wrong in order to try to collect a big payday.

3) Passing on information that you know is a lie about a political opponent.

4) Posting someone's phone number or address online in an effort to intimidate him or worse yet, in hopes that someone will try to hurt him.

5) Putting an earmark in a bill in order to enrich your friends, family, or yourself.

6) A witty comedian telling a brilliant joke about how dumb people are to do the right thing.

7) Breaking into a house and encouraging people to engage in squatting.

8) Lying to a woman to get her to sleep with you.

9) Being an online troll.

10) Trying to convince people to do something that's immoral, unethical, or just plain old wrong so that you'll feel better about doing it yourself.

11) Spreading a conspiracy theory you don't believe in to draw in traffic for your website.

12) Spraying graffiti on someone else's property.

13) Watching someone drop money on the ground and keeping it instead of giving it back to him.

14) A pastor who waters down his Christian beliefs because they conflict with political correctness.

15) Hacking into someone else's computer.

16) Choosing not to help pay for your own children's livelihood.

17) Spreading malicious rumors about friends and co-workers.

18) Aborting your child because it's inconvenient.

19) Deliberately undermining someone else's marriage.

20) Trying to rig an election, win a seat in the courts that you lost at the ballot box, or trying to insure phony votes are counted.

21) An atheist trying to ruin other people's faith in God to make himself feel better about his own unbelief.

22) Writing a virus that infects someone's computer.

23) Living off the charity of others or the government dole AND feeling no shame over it.

24) Mocking someone whose politics you disagree with right after he dies.

25) Knowingly accusing an innocent person of racism.

This may be really more of a cousin to #12:
"keying" a car that displays bumper stickers or placards espousing a candidate or cause you disagree with.

Couldn't Agree More!!!
2 Timothy 3:1-9

The media (television) has made bad behavior the "in" thing for mainstream, young America and just about everything coming out of Hollywood today is trash. No morals, no self control, no respect for others, no accountability, and the worst: no reverence for God. I know a lot of people think I preach too much, but we really are truly doomed to repeat history because of our arrogance (I'm talking Old Testament destruction of whole nations).

God forgive us and may we turn from our sins.

So far, so good......
They tell the story of an old Navy CPO who attended a church service. The sermon was on the Ten Commandments, and the Cheif was heard to mutter as he left the church, 'At least I never made no graven image....'

I think that at least I've not broken any of these 25. Can't quite say that about the Ten Commandments, but I've not made a graven image, either....

26) Reading well from a teleprompter
thereby passing yourself off as a brilliant thinker and speaker!

John Hawkins creating a new John Hawkins
column is an example of "everyday evil"!

Just saying...

The Pirates in Congress....
...who use the whole force of the US government to steal our money. Nobody minds paying reasonable taxes, obeying reasonable laws and coughing up for reasonable fees.

Our government right now is unreasonable and tyrannical. And the Dems are quickly making it worse. I'll take my chances with the Somalis. At least I have a fighting chance.

Nope. You cannot fight the evil government. You'll lose everytime.

posting here is an excample of everyday idiocy.

Well
I only found myself perhaps guilty of one.
I don't find a lot of them everday occurrences, however, except in perhaps a politcal, higher society sense.
I do however often wonder how people even watch the crud commercials on TV or the shows anymore, or how they get a full audience for them - when they are nothing more than cheap sexual deviation for hours on end.
A friend showed me the top viewed youtube vids the other night, and it was rather disgusting to see what drew over 100 million views.
1,3,4,9,12,15,17,22,24, and 25 seem to be directly dealing with the online political communities.

Evil is good?
No one does evil and calls it that, they must first call it a "good." The idea of evil is deception - usually it involves self-deception.

One need go no further than to look at two very clear things to prove this point.

1. "Choice" this nice term has allowed us to go about our business electing presidents who agressively support slaughtering babies outside the womb and most of us are complicit in our voting in the deaths of fifty million pre-born innocents. (proof -they wont ever show us an abortion -that would expose, what we all know is a very evil thing)

2. Global warming. This is the biggest scam in history -in order to control people. It required no less that the public destruction of science -now reduced to mere opinion called "consensus." (Proof -they won't debate it - "it's settled" according to the lying political creators)

Why does evil work so easily? We want it -we want to be lied to and we want the right to tell ourselves big lies -no matter how much it hurts everyone, including ourselves.

Relative morality is a diabolical intoxicant!

Number 26
Thinking oneself as good and sinless, therefore needing no God.

Flying Goat
Good one.

Some others (apologize if this is a dup.
#26: See Flying Goat's reply

#27: Being involved in a sexual relationship with someone who is not your spouse, particularly if you or your partner are someone else's spouse.

#28: Maintaining preferential treatment of someone for any (repeat ANY) reason besides qualifications. This applies as much to Straight White Christian Conservative Men as it does to Atheist Black Lesbians.

#29: Defending evil, particularly when such defense portrays a good as an evil (Abortion, Same-Sex "Marriage," Affirmative action, etc. vs the opposition there to.)

#30: Betrayal of family or country by deed or by word. Giving moral support to people who wish to destroy your country, particularly by spreading falsehoods about your own country.

#31: Theft of all sorts, including music/movie/video game piracy, shoplifting, fraud, embezzelment, etc.

#32: Cursing or swearing, particularly in public, very particularly around children.

#33: Being disrespectful in the House of God. This includes any church, temple, synagogue, or mosque. Disrespect includes swearing (see above), making undue noise, disrupting a service, using the pulpit to make a political statement that does not fit within the religion's doctrine (A Catholic priest preaching in favor of abortion, for example), vandalism, and (for Christians) desecrating the bread and wine.

#34: Abortion for any reason.

#35: Supporting abortion, particularly unrestricted abortion (that is, abortion-on-demand regardless of age, stage of pregnancy, method, or parental or spousal oposition).

#36: Worshiping material things (that is, putting earthly goods, power, money, fame, appeal, etc. above God.)

#37: Taking others' work and passing it off as your own, particularly if you are the supervisor and the "others" are your subordinates.

#38: Causing harm to others for your own advancement, regardless of the severity of the harm.

This also...
viciously attacking a candidates children to discredit the candidate.

Still More
#39: Believing that justice or fairness means you win all the time.

#40: Failing to show God the respect that He is due, including atheism, blasphemy, making or watching movies that mock Him (Last Temptation of Christ, for example), etc. (See, also, #33 in my last post)

#41: Preaching falsehood from the pulpit, particularly when that falsehood is intended to harm another.

#42: Knowingly accusing someone of a misdeed they did not commit, particularly if the accusation turns into disciplinary action.

#43: Demanding that your voice be heard while demanding that someone else be silenced.

#44: Supporting pornography, particularly while denigrating the Bible.

#45: Gossip, whether it's true or not.

#46: Selling a product you know to be faulty, hazardous, ineffective, or fraudulent.

#47: Expecting or demanding preferential treatment for your aberrant behavior. (Such as putting your right not to be offended by religion above the rights of others to respect it.)

#48: Causing harm to someone because you disagree with them.

#49: Sloth, that is, being able to work but unwilling to put forth the effort.

#50: Failing to teach your children proper respect for God, Country and other people. Also, teaching your children to act irresponsibly.

#51: Failing to protect and support your children.

#52: Blaming others for your own faults and failings, or otherwise failing to take responsibility for your own actions.

How about
Having to drag others down so you don't appear so low yourself?

The use of the word ALL when referring to any group of people: ALL democrats/republicans are ill-informed liars. ALL means there are no exceptions. Knowing ONE that is not means the statement is a lie.

Tacking a label on someone they cannot refute: I cannot prove I am not
a homophobe
a racist
There just is no way to prove it is untrue.

agreement
These are all good points. I particularly agree with the inclusion of the frivolous lawsuit item, getting someone to pay up just to get rid of a bother.

I didn't see taking someone's identity on the list.

flyerjay

addendum
On my #46 about selling faulty products, I will note that the "hazardous" part should include "without clearly describing the hazards." Many products are dangerous to use, even when used correctly, just by their nature. Heavy Equipment is an example.

"Taking someone's identity" Good one.

#26 onward
Talking behind a person's back whether at work or in your personal life. It solves nothing and makes a problem situation a worse one.

Doing nothing. This can be the kids at the schoolyard who avert their eyes when the Bully beats up the whipping boy to the hundreds of thousands of "Good" citizens who enable a country's bully dictator. Adolf HItler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, and Pol Pot were enabled by citizens who did nothing, thereby giving passive support.

Good God!!
John Hawkins just described the U.S. congress!!!

Maybe the
biggest evil of all,

Spreading the wealth and leveling the playing field.

Point to consider
Obama is the first truly evil man ever to be elected to the office of President of the United States.

#26

Texting while driving.

Envy and Covetousness
or, in other words, using the gov't to steal someone else's stuff so you don't have to earn your own.

Will
is simply demonstrating #9.

Happy Jake
You have a great list here, but I would like to qualify one.

#34: Abortion for any reason.

There are cases when there is zero chance of the baby surviving, (such as a tubal ligation) that could not just injure but kill the mother. In a case such as this I would support the abortion.

Atheism part
"An atheist trying to ruin other people's faith in God to make himself feel better about his own unbelief."

Excuse me, but there isn't an atheist I know who tries to 'ruin' someone's faith. Many like Dawkins and Hitchens just point out the ridiculous parts of faith and how it has held our civilization back. Just look at the creationist movement. How can you NOT ridicule something that stupid? That's not evil, that's just pointing out the truth.

J-10
Spreading the wealth and leveling the playing field.

I would have to say spreading someone else’s wealth against their will. Spreading wealth is a wonderful and good thing as long as it is your own. Otherwise it is theft.

Great Column - Mostly Nonpartisan
Here are some more:

Remaining silent when someone from another office bad-mouths your boss or co-worker.

Failing to say Grace or be thankful before a meal.

Bullying effeminate boys and men.

Using office supplies for your personal needs.

Steam-opening someone's personal mail.

Ridiculing a co-worker's family pictures.

Leaving Listerine on the desk of someone with bad breath.

I have done all these things. Never again.

That should have been
Spreading the wealth and leveling the playing field, THROUGH TAXATION

Number 27
Driving on the road while conversing on a cell phone and causing an accident, resulting in serious bodily harm to others.

Kathy
Toxic people generally act out of jealousy and destroy through divide and conquer methods. Women are experts in this regard.

Happy Jake
Number 34 Abortion for any reason.

I suppose if a woman needs an abortion because it would save her life, she should die because it's God's will. Or if a woman gets pregnant due to rape or incest, she ought to bear that child because she was a dirty woman.

Happy Jake, you are a kind person, not.

LMAO
"...Yes, "good people" can and often do perform evil acts that should be incompatible with their view of themselves as decent human beings."

Deadline? Good grief this shopping list shows how out of ideas and compassion the right is

That's Entertainment!
#10 Trying to convince people to do something that's immoral, unethical, or just plain old wrong so that you'll feel better about doing it yourself.
-------
Funny, this one has been on my mind since this last election process began. To me, it describes the entertainment industry to a 'T'. Unless they are running for office, I wish they would respect the general public and just stay out of politics altogether.

All in all, a great column.

LMAO I love it. I consider it high complement

RE: Happy Jake
Ok I dont agree with you on this one
"#32: Cursing or swearing, particularly in public, very particularly around children."

I dont agree with it because the positive or negative connotation on a word is in the mind of the person who hears it. Look at the english language alone, words that mean one thing in America, mean something completely different and considered non offensive.

Now I try and watch my language, but its not because I feel theres anything wrong with what I say, but because I get tired of others whining about it.

Re: trolls
This is a good list. The online troll problem is a new evil, but very real.

And another
Calling yourself a Christian and then marching in the street with a bullhorn demanding that your neighbours be forced at gunpoint to feed His sheep.

Fighting hunger in Somalia by buying a t-shirt.

Knowing that a person who has worked beside you in your group for five years has just lost her father after a long illness -- and assuming someone else will arrange flowers, condolence cards or announcements. When nobody does, saying and doing nothing at all to remedy the situation, in hopes that she will simply forget about it.

If you are a young man, gluing your buttocks to a seat and pretending to be asleep while an 80 year old woman with a cane, or a man on crutches, tries to stand on a crowded train in front of you. Encouraging your friends not to give their seats to ladies "Because they f***ing wanted to be liberated."

Polluting a thread about a prominent race car driver's tax trial for evading $5 millions worth of taxes in collusion with his sister and his lawyer, by endlessly posting speculations about prison sex, even after having been requested to stick to the subject.

Bursting into a Christian thread on a website for the sole purpose of jeering at Christianity. Would you burst into a baseball thread for the sole purpose of jeering at baseball?

And perhaps the worst evil of all, telling someone who is coping with an alcoholic, abusive husband who has drunk away his business and left you and your three small children in fear and in hunger and in danger of losing their home, that "God doesn't send you any more than you can bear" and then going home and turning on the teevee to watch Oprah say the asme.

RE: Happy Jake

I dont agree with it because the positive or negative connotation on a word is in the mind of the person who hears it. Look at the english language alone, words that mean one thing in America, mean something completely different and considered non offensive in other English and non English Speaking countries. I am not going to list them here because the post will be flagged, but anyone who has traveled extensively will understand.

Now I try and watch my language, but its not because I feel theres anything wrong with what I say, but because I get tired of others whining about it.

Mocking Someone after they die...
You know, for reasons of policy, I despise Ted Kennedy. This is one person who has truly done evil in this world by enabling the growth of federal government power over individuals in violation of every principal the Framers laid down in our Constitution. I must confess I will be happy when he departs the senate, even if this is in a pine box. I believe he will have a lot to answer for in his support for both abortion and government dependency, not to mention the death of Mary Jo Kopechne (spelling?). Perhaps I am a good person who will lapse into evil when the least of the Kennedy brothers departs this earth, or perhaps I will not mock him, but rather just be glad he will no longer be here to do harm to our country.

On the other hand, perhaps I am just evil.

The real #1 everyday evil...
... should consist of sniffing out "evil" all around oneself, mixing together a mess of evils, irritations, disagreements and resentments (Trolling is evil? It consists of just being the one person on a thread who thinks in the opposite direction of all the others).
This column confirms the idea that those who most easily find evil all around them are the ones most uneasy about it lurking within themselves.
*OK, here's a #26 for Hawkins - "Having a head shaped like a cinder block."

I've Got A Plank In My Eye
We tend to think the other guy is evil but if we're honest we know that seed is in us too. Thank God for forgiveness.

More
Calling Evil 'Good' and Good 'Evil'

Liars (this covers a LOT of ground)

Failing to Trust God. (putting it another way: Putting Faith in People)

Any act, word or deed that cheapens human life.

Lewis
George Carlin's "7 Words" along with taking the name of God in Vain are what I'm talking about. It's a minor evil to be true, but it's still morally wrong to swear. Depending on the situation (in private or as a reflex when something bad happens versus loudly and frequently in public or when there are children around, for example) determines the degree of wrongness, not whether or not it is wrong.

26
Excusing someone else's evil to exonerate self. Unwilling to judge the actions of others in order to evade condemnation. Juries do this all the time and lawyers take full advantage of it. Calling sin a sin is the necessary first step to forgiveness and then on to restoration of the injured party and thus the restoration of self. Throwing money at an injustice is not justice.

#21
I wonder if Mr. Hawkins considers believers proselytizing to unbelievers equally evil?

Gay Conservative
On abortion, there is nothing that justifies taking an innocent life. Period. If you look at the CDC's death statistics, you will see that the number of women who die in the US from pregnancy and childbirth stands at somewhere like 200 per year, and that includes complications from abortions and illnesses that abortions can't fix, like eclampsia. Modern Medicine has just about eliminated the need for abortion to save the mother's life.

Also note that none of these evils are irredeemable in the eyes of God.

On Cars and Phones:
I will agree with you on that one. I forgot to add "negligently causing an automobile accident through gross inattention (cell phones), reckless driving, or drunk driving."

tuffone
To expand on your thought, when the Bible says "Judge not lest ye be judged and by the judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged" it's referring to declaring a particular person to be evil or worthy of eternal damnation. But we ARE supposed to judge acts, and that's something that often gets lost when people say "don't be judgmental."

William
No, proselytizing to non-believers is not evil. As a matter of fact, it's a moral imperative. Hence missionary churches in non-Christian lands.

Forced conversion (conversion by the Sword, for example) is, however, evil.

Mrs Paddy

We should all be uneasy about the evil that lurks in our own hearts (I know I am). And there isn't a person out there who doesn't have evil in them. It's a part of humanity. I'm sure Hawkins is guilty of some of the things on his list just as I have done some of the things on mine. We aren't perfect, though we should strive to be. And the first step toward perfecting yourself is recognizing your own imperfections.

Hawkins
It seems that computers are a major source of evil in your life. In that case, even if its your arm, as the bible says, cut it off. Books really are superior to most of what the web offers anyway.

Reactions
The reactions of people to lists like this is interesting. There are they who say "Good List." They recognize that the list is correct and the acts on it are evil. Whether they see themselves doing any of them is another matter.

There are people who add to the list, recognizing that there is more than what is just listed here that belongs.

There are they who denigrate the list. They are the ones who do not recognize evil, or who do not wish their actions to be called evil.

There are they who point out items with which they disagree. They are the ones who recognize their own acts or attitudes on the list and refuse to accept the evil of those acts.

Good and evil are not up for debate. It isn't a case of I think something's evil that you don't think is evil. I know for certain that my list is not simply my opinion or a list of things that irritate me. It is a list of things I have been brought up to understand to be sinful. And sinful = evil.

John_FL: Re #49 "Mocking Someone after

There is no question that we sometimes have a rogue Conservative who will be less than caring or considerate or even polite when we hear such about a public figure.

HOWEVER, the vitriol and absolute INSANE BLIND HATRED that is spewed from the left is only an indication of the hate that is so pervasive on the left .

There are two laws upon which all the law and the prophets are built. (1)Love God and (2)love your neighbor as yourself. You can't do #2 unless you do #1. That is why there are so many screwed up answers on this thread. Too many people think they are God and don't want the competition of the One True and Living God. For those of you who don't like Christ Jesus because of christians; would you like to be judged by your idiot sibling? It's stupid to judge Jesus when you've never met Him. He's really quite wonderful and He isn't troubled by the fact that YOU are as annoying as the people you despise. If you will call on the name of Jesus, you too can be saved from your "imperial" self.

Happy Jake
So then I'm assuming you disagree with item #21.

Atheists would have the same compulsion to spread their "good news" as you would yours.

How about THIS #26:

Advocating gun control while you yourself either carry a gun for protection (like Diane Feinstein, Carl T. Rowan, etc.) or employ someone else, meaning an armed bodyguard or armed neighborhood private security, to carry it FOR you (like Rosie O'Donnell).

SIN
The sin most often committed, and least confessed is rash judgement.

Georgetwin

Do you think that now that Sarah Palin's child is a single mom, she will disagree with Ann Coulter about single moms? Coulter referred to single motherhood as "a recipe to create criminals, strippers, rapists, murderers."

Not true at all. We slaughter innocent animals every day. What is life? When does it start? It truly is above your pay grade unless you think you are god.

Well then this exception is now OK?

So if you're a responsible adult and own a hand gun, you can't advocate gun control. Those policemen's families in Oakland, who where killed with AK 47s might disagree.

Or the families of the three cops killed in Pittsburgh by the rightwinger. Is it true that the families are going to sue the right wing talkers and the NRA for inciting the extremist to thinking Obama was coming for his guns and to fight back?

People are desensitized to evil
and redefine terms so that that which is evil si now soemhow virtuous. For example, I see kids sacrificed to to their parent's appetites on a regular basis: "I need to have "me" time", "I have a right to be happy, so go live with your mother/father.", "My new boyfriend/girlfriend comes first- don't you get in the way." Me, me, me, me, me. On it goes. I work with kids whose earliest memory is being attacked by some "adult" in their lives. Then there is the "mental health" and "child protective" services that respond by making excuses for the "adults" and diagnosing the kids for reacting to the absurd evil inflicted upon them. This is among the things that makes centralized gov't so dangerous; harmful policies become the rule of law- and those involved with various systems must comply with "treatment". In the case of kids and teens involved in the mental "health" system- they are very often misdiagnosed with psychiatric illnesses, such as bipolar disorder, and must comply with medication and treatment. Kids are also diagnosed based upon thre numbers a given program needs to pull to maintain funding. I'm going to post a few examples of kids on my caseload alone.

Hal

See if you get a kick out of this little item. It should have made John's list.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS!

Due to the damage (incalculable) America has suffered because of PC, it should be at the top on the "Evil List".

PC crap started sweeping college campuses forty years ago. We can thank a bunch of left-wing, hippie professors for this nightmare. Then came the MSM. They took it to levels that would should be laughable. But they were actually serious about this garbage!

And what do we have today in America? That's right. We have the most politically correct president in our history. Are you getting a big kick of this, Hal? That's good. Let me tell you something. It makes me sick.

But we have learned that you are amongst those incapable of earning much of a living so you cheer flap ears spending plans since it doesn't require you to pay additional taxes.

Funny how you losers are always quick to tell others they need pay more while you contrive to pay less.

Funny how you witless trolls always can see the right as failures but the party you belong to enables and encourages failure.

So explain why the top ten cities with the highest rates of persons living below the poverty line are run by the dims. I guess you clowns can't fix the problems you cry about, no matter how many tax dollars you throw at the problem, that is tax dollars, losers like you don't pay but expect the earners to pay in increasing amounts

"Date: Apr 14, 2009 - 10:44 AM EST...See if you get a kick out of this little item. It should have made John's list....We have the most politically correct president in our history. Are you getting a big kick of this, Hal? That's good. Let me tell you something. It makes me sick."

Not me. I remember the day hurt words like the "N" word were used to hurt and bully folks and keep them down. Granted sometimes it can go to far but it is better that verbal violence is held in check

Case examples of systemic evil
From this year's cases:

* A 13 year old girl court was court ordered to spend every other weekend with her "father" in a welfare motel that also houses paroled sex offenders. Father never had interest in the girl and is an active crack addict, but ran out of money in Georgia so decided to give NJ a try. Among the first gifts to his daughter was a matching earring and necklace set of the Playboy Bunny head. Nice. The girl was ultimately molested and "dad" is gone.

* DYFS had to be called because a 7 year old brother and his eight year old sister have to regularly flee from their drunken maniac father. Last Sunday night it was at 1:00am when Captain Morgan decided the kids shouuld clean their rooms, and proceeded to rip them out of bed and terrorize them. Of course, "mother" does nothing but wail, scream, and sacrifice the kids. DYFS worker (a 20 something ditz- as usual) said, "Weeelll, "Mr.Morgan" is the father, and we can't just write him out of the children's lives; the family does have an effective plan of escape for the kids for rough nights..." I then was given a lecture by morally relativistic little ghoul in pumps about "people living in their contexts" and this was "their context". Unbelievable.

* A sexually abused 14 year old girl who was put in an intensive outpatient program for teens aged 13-19- even though this intervention is completely incorrect for a sexual abuse survivor. Not to worry; an 18 year old violent offender who was court-ordered to the group found this girl right away and has taken matters into his own hands.

I don't have room for all the examples; and yet the astoundingly stupid liberal masses think we need to increase funding and for and the power of these catastrophies- all while calling it compassionate!

Assuming an atheist is immoral, unethical and evil because they have a different belief is the epitome of evil.

Hawkins' lists continue to expose him as a shallow ideologue.

"Date: Apr 14, 2009 - 10:44 AM EST ...so explain why the top ten cities with the highest rates of persons living below the poverty line are run by the dims..."

Great argument we have work to do but explain why the magic of conservatism has left the red states as a whole mired in poverty and ignorance. Not talking cities here but whole states.

"... I guess you clowns can't fix the problems you cry about, no matter how many tax dollars you throw at the problem, that is tax dollars, losers like you don't pay but expect the earners to pay in increasing amounts.."

Actually good point I wonder if we take back all the federal funds going to red states and reprogrammed them to blue states we can get the job done. I mean we cannot provide this form of welfare indefinitely can we?

But should I
A couple of the new hip, anti-social, free expression, forms taken by the "independent" minded is to walk off the side walk in the direction of traffic and or to double park in front of a school to let the children out, on the wrong side of the car.

Many of the things we can do I wish people would ask, "Should I". To many people no longer recognize they are making a choice to make it inconvenient for others or more seriously in the case of abortion they do not consider what it will be like in the future, looking into the eyes of a child knowing theirs would have been that age.

THERE IS NO GAY CONSERVATIVE
THERE ARE NO GAY CONSERVATIVE, JUST AS THERE ARE NO ILLEGAL DRUG USING CONSERVATIVES. TELEVISION AND RADIO PERSONALITIES THAT FAIL TO PRACTICE RESTRAINT ARE NOT CONSERVATIVES BUT CHOOSE TO FIGHT AGAINST THOSE MORE LIBERAL THAN THEM. RESPECT OF THE WORD OF GOD, IS THE FOUNDATION TO CONSERVATIVISM. BEING GAY VIOLATES THE WORD OF GOD WHICH THAN PROHIBITS ANY GAY FROM EVER BEING A CONSERVATIVE. IN GOD WE TRUST IS ON ALL MONIES IN THE UNITED STATES. ONLY WHEN THE TERRITORY OF UTAH ACCEPTED THE DEFINITION OF ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN IN THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE WAS THEY ADMITTED INTO THE UNION OF THE UNITED STATES. NOONE WHO BELIEVE MARRIAGE IS ANYTHING BUT ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN IN THE SIGHT OF GOD AND MAN.

But I am sure that even phonies like you have dropped the n bomb on occasion. You remain nothing but a phony leftie who tries to cover up his own failings.

But why are you lecturing whites about using the n bomb, why don't you tell you black victim pals to quit using the term.

Even the black hater whoopi goldberg has stated no one can tell to stop calling others n*ggers

Typical Dimwit Liberal Deflection. Anne Coulter was CLEARLY referring to that Core Liberal Constituency of Welfare Mothers.

How PITIFUL is it that Liberals beat up on children. What a bunch of Cowards!

On proselytizing
There is no sense to the argument that equates Christians seeking to convert unbelievers with atheists pushing their point of view. The difference is motivation. While the Christian can be irritating (I've hidden out from the Jehovah's Witnesses when they come to the door, too), they are motivated to bring others to a better life and afterlife through Jesus Christ. Atheists all too often are motivated by the idea of tearing something down. The motivation to do something positive is not the same as the motivation to do something negative.

Great Thread!
One of the best townhall threads ever! So I'm sorry to see Hawkins list Evil #9 because as a liberal I'm so grateful that TH moderators welcome me here on a conservative site where there's enough difference to get a good discussion going. Man has always debated the nature of evil, and so continues here the debate. Reading through these posts I see a couple of common themes: 1. "Government and social positions I happen to disagree with are evil" and 2) "Actions taken by a government (laws, regulations) that stop me doing what I want to do are evil". Really?

Partick/Texas:
What do you mean there are no gay conservatives?

There are plenty of gay conservatives.

But they tend to be economic (fiscal) conservatives, foreign policy conservatives (even some gay neocons, like a few jewish neocons) -- but rarely social conservatives.

You are confusing "social conservatives" with all conservatives. Social cons are just a small segment of the coalition.

I have to post more, just have to
* A 17 year old girl came home from work to find mom's latest lay in her room watching porn on her computer. Mom was enjoying "girl's night out", so my kid was left to deal with the boyfriend. The girl goes berserk (as she should), neighbors overheard the fighting and called the police. The police came, refer to the local hospital's family crisis unit, and make the bf and my girl go to the hospital for intervention. They were presented with a contract that, for the girl, included " I will repspect my mother's significant other". My girl (awesome kid!) refused to sign, correctly calling it insane. She was threatened to be forced into the adolescent inpatient unit if she did not sign.

* A 16 year old girl was grabbed by the hair and thrown across the room by her father. When the 14 year old brother tried to intervene, her was choked and has gravel shoved into his mouth which resulted in oral injuries. Mother did nothing, of course. DYFS decided the family needed family counseling (meanwhile, anyone with an iota of clinical experience knows they are not candidates for family counseling). Family counselor goes to the house for a session and brings a game called "Feelings Bingo" so the family can have fun! Father throws Feelings Bingo out the door, along with the worker's briefcase, and orders her out of the house. The case is closed , and the kids are wondering why the dad's temper is allowed to control even those who are supposed to help. Good question.

Wake Up And Pay Attention
good stuff....sometimes it's the small stuff we need to be wary of...it's easy to see the big stuff..like telling kids not to lie yet they see adults telling "white lies" every day...

delusional lilly
so the ancient lilly again shows up to post more nonsense.

I am surprised that someone like you who claims to be so compassionate has not trouble with the financial burden flap ears is imposing on the children and grandchildren of the future.''But why would you care, you are getting more so why would you asre your retired civil servant husband care who foots the bill.

But we remember your non ending love affair with flap ears and how you maintained he was the miracle worker you yearn for and his socialist nirvana that enables the losers your ilk champions.

Exactly what is the gov't keeping an elderly socialist from doing. I suppose you are another of the losers trying to figure out how you and hubby can get your motorized wheel chairs at gov't expense, unless of course you have already received them

Atheist Part
Jack,

I guess you probably would not agree with me but I do not believe a true Athiest exists. The term "athiest" means one who does not believe in or have faith in God. I believe those who profess athieism have perhaps greater faith than a lot of Christians. They exercise an inordinate amount of faith in the non-existence of God in the face of a universe that trumpets the existence of a designer, a creator. An Agnostic I can accept - one who says, basically, "I don't know if there is a God". The Atheist, on the other hand, with faith in his or her own reason, declares conclustively that "There is no God". I don't buy it. But, God loves you anyway. :-)

To oldsocialworker
May I point out that it is YOUR profession, carrying out actions thoroughly sanctioned and promoted by the NASW and taught in schools of social work sanctioned by the CSWE, that pushes the idiotic policy of keeping children with their biological parents NO MATTER WHAT. So we have parents who are psychotic, alcoholic, drug-involved, and just plain EVIL doing terrible things to their children. Because somewhere in a busy office, some oldsocialworker ruled that they had to be there. Nice work, oldsocialworker.

More Examples
About one that directly relates to today's greed feeding frenzy? I see Wall Street as schemers whose greed is infinite and ethics nonexistent. They hype their schemes, downplay the risks, and take investors’ money with very little risk to themselves. Even with “above board” schemes, if they exist, their “services” provide precious little value to the process yet their “take”, more like theft, is disproportionate to the extreme. A Madoff type has caused more distress to more people than a dozen serial killers yet too often these “white collar” criminals get off with very light punishment. That has to be addressed so the law becomes a real and consistent deterrent to this deception and thievery. Politicians, above all, should be held accountable for their actions and held to a very high standard of ethics and transparency!!! Utopian? Not if there's a mobilizing consensus of the majority. Politicians are serial wrongdoers and perpetrators of evil at every turn. Transparency and true accountability to the people is what the citizens must insist on if we want to take our country back from these incompetents/liars/cheaters/stealers (among the milder crimes).

Like everything you post, your facts are wrong. I've successfully earned a living my whole life. And, you're post violates #9 and several other listed evils.

Georgetwin,

So Palin's unemployed daughter doesn't count. I see. She should have said, this applies only to welfare kids, and not rich kids.

So much more...
Truly imperiled kids know there is no one who can help them- and will tell anyone who will listen. Many therapists work straight out of the "Sex and the City" model, and subscribe to the selfishness that is confused with adulthood. Predators and destructive people/situations are regularly accommodated and comforted in the name of "unifying families" or "rehabilitation".

Recently a man who had been raping his daughter from toddlerhood was released from Avenel- NJ's sex offender prison. He was released 2 years early for good behavior (no female toddlers in prison, I guess- so he behaved). The parole board allowed him to be placed in house three doors down from the house his now destroyed adult daughter lives in! It is she who has to scramble to move out- not him! Her advocate (a friend of mine) is sick about this, but was told that the man "paid his debt to society'!! It was the girl he destroyed, not "society", but that doesn't matter to bureaucrats.

This is altogether evil, and entirely institutionalized.

Lilly
I'm in direct service and make no rules. I have stayed in direct service specifically so that I can help people avoid and navigate systems. You can thank, Lilly, moral relativism for the NASW evil. Moral relativism says that there is no right or wrong, only what is right for you. It is the offspring of liberalism, and i used to be a liberal when I was young and stupid- that much is true. Its not such a bad deal to be a Lady in Havana, though.

Freedom is the Issue!!
The grassroots movement taking hold is about what the constitution stands for and what conservatives and some independents do believe in (1)Individual Rights
(2)Belief in the Constitution
(3)Small Government
(4)Fiscal Responsibility
Honesty such as Right and Wrong have been disgarded for half truths! We have a liberal media that touts everyone in one box - gun slingers with bibles!
Most middle class Americans are hard working people some religious, some spiritual and some atheists but all have the same philosophy - Individual freedom! That is the fight right now! Once Pelosi and the democrats shove through every bill to take away our freedoms, we are Americans in name only! Any European laughs at us, they can't understand why Americans who did have the greatest country in the world think that failed socialism is something to follow.
In order to take back America, we need to understand some of the issues. We need to start manufacturing here and not give China all that power over us! We need to vote out career politicians consistently! We need to find out how to get term limits on the ballot so that "we the people" can get rid of the ilk that permeates both local, state and federal government! The vermin need to be stopped before we lose all our freedoms including the right to blog!
*A note, the FTC is going after mommy bloggers, I believe they are questioning their right to get free stuff (coupons etc.) from corporations! GET YOUR BRAINS GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AMERICA!!!!

About the NASW, Lilly
You are right- and i am not a member. But boy did they want Obama as president. So if NASW policies are conducive to the perpetuation of evil, which they are and we both agree- the candidates they support reflect their values. That would be every liberal democrat from sea to shining sea. You have more in common with the NASW than I ever will.

WOW--SO many good words of wisdom--a GREAT article, with GREAT comments-particularly from Happy Jake---IT IS UNIMAGINABLE what we have come to accept in this once great land--I think we have abandoned the Judeo-Christian ideals of our forefathers, and accepted the secular -GOD-LESS principles espoused by the Dmeocratic party-who endorse 3 LIBERAL LIES that have HARMED/KILLED millions of Americans, especially black Americans-- who engage in sex outside of marriage at MUCH higher rates --theu more devasttion!
Let's ask the first black CHristian Presdietn to answer for these SAD statistics:

Blacks account for 12-13% of the U.S. population--yet they have higher numbers as a percentage of their race in all of the following social ills:
POVERTY-The #1 group trapped in poverty are single female -headed
households--NO marriage--sadly, blacks have a 70% out--of-wedlock birth rate--so more will be trapped in poverty. Choosing to engage in sex before marriage is the contributing factor! Time Magazine recently had the statistic that we spend $500 billion on poverty-related programs.
STD's --Blacks have higher numbers of ALL STD's -not just HIV/AIDS--which in
some areas they account for 50% of the new cases--but MANY others- we spend $20 billion on screening/treatment.
CRIME--We know that black youth engage in higher rates of criminal behavior and on
more black victims--we also know that 70% of the men in prison came from
homes with NO fathers--NO marriage--thus NO positive role model--people
making sexual choices, but then abandon their responsibility! How does one begin to factor the costs of an unproductive life spent behind bars?
ABORTION--We know that since 1973-Roe v. Wade that 45 million unborn babies
have been KILLED in legal abortion--BUT 1/3rd of those-15 million--were balck babies-go to http://www.abortionno.org to see the reality?

Evil Is As Evil Does
The evil that prevails and makes deals in the dark and plots and conspires to take down a great country shall soon see the light, I do believe. Not to worry, the intelligent American people are waking up to the socialist agenda that is not in the best interest of the American people and they will either be impeached, recalled, arrested, or voted out whichever applies to whoever it applies to. Good shall win over evil, John, but unfortunately, it takes a long time to wake up people and many innocent people end up homeless and jobless.

No. 26 but it should be No. 1
I am talking about the over pampered, overpaid, over perked, over pensioned, greedy, lazy, ungrateful, arrogant public parasite steal 2 or 3 or 4 times the compensation a comparable job would pay in the real world. There is no one as evil as one who literally steals from his friends and neighbors. Naturally the most obviously examples of these public parasites are your local “dedicated” public school left wing political indoctrination specialist, i.e. your kid’s teacher and your neighborhood “hero” cop who usually has mental problems and a really bad attitude playing hard a$$ while doing absolutely nothing 99% of the time.

FINALLY! A pro-gay-marriage article!
"Deliberately undermining someone else's marriage."

It's good to know that John Hawkins doesn't think the CA Supreme Court should undermine the 18,000 gay marriages that took place before Prop 8 passed.

Jack 8:00AM
You stated that there's not an atheist that wants to ruin someones religion. How about "Sir" Elton John? Didn't he want to outlaw religion? I'm sure there are many that would go along with that to assuage their personal guilt as you do.

Everyday evil things
Participation in occult and pagan things that have entered the culture under the label New Age movement.

Children who disrespect parents (or other family members) who have worked to be a support to their children. People who are in a role to teach children how to act toward family members and don't do so.

Individuals who do not reach out to family and community members with words of support when needed, acting as if this is the role of the government or somebody else.

Priests, ministers or rabbis do evil when they avoid talking about the topics discused here because they don't want to offend the big givers.

daft the loser and whiner
you're the loser who tells us of you inability to earn an income. You have bragged how you pay few taxes because you are incapable of working as anything but a part time teacher.

But it seems you get your panties in a twist over the palin's and rush. Seems There is no reports that palin's daughter has turned to welfare to support her baby unlike the welfare losers you champion and demand society pay for.

And since rush makes mega millions, there is no reports that his divorced wives were forced onto welfare roles because he left them in the lurch like the average leftie and ghetto loser you champion.

But it seems you tell you self you are a compassionate and caring person and still attack any repub who has personal failings.

But pointing out your hypocrisy is not an example of evil. But if anything the fact you post never ending stupidity is more of an act of aggression against people who call for personal accounting for their lives.

But you think you love of socialism gives you a pass for your never ending attacks on caspitalism

Funny how you losers are always jealous of the success of others and then demand they be punished for success so that the losers you champion can be rewarded for their useless lives.

Jack 8:00AM

So, you're saying it would be better to abort these lives rather than have losers with useless lives?

Being a Liberal or thinking like one!

The entire list describes a Liberal perfectly!

Animals can be neither innocent nor guilty. Those terms are meaningless to animals as animals are without souls. Animals have neither the rights nor the responsibilities of humans.

As to abortion, I still hold that there is no case in which abortion is not an evil act. This isn't an argument about when or if abortion should be legal. Laws change, and are not necessarily based on morality. This isn't about me saying "I think abortion is wrong." People's individual opinions have nothing to do with the morality of a given act. This is a case of right and wrong, and abortion is absolutely wrong. Period.

Should a woman give her life for her child? In a perfect world, yes. Now, would I have the strength to actually go through with that statement if it were my wife? I cannot say for sure, and with luck I will never find out. If I became weak and chose wrongly am I automatically doomed to eternal damnation? No.

As I said before, nothing is so evil that it is irredeemable. We aren't talking about being judged by a court or a jury or the media or the public or our friends or our family. We're talking about being judged by God, the only judgment that really matters. If you are truely remorseful (and God knows whether or not you are) and you understand the wrongness of your actions, and (in some Christian denominations) you confess your sins and receive absolution from God through the priest or minister, your soul is cleansed.

Yes, there is such a thing as the lesser of two evils. And sometimes we are forced to choose a necessary evil. That doesn't mean we should take it lightly. Even if the necessary evil was legal in a civil sense, God's view does not change.

angelmom @ 11:55
"Let's ask the first black Christian Presdent to answer for these SAD statistics..."

First off, the "FIRST BLACK CHRISTIAN PRESIDENT" will have to be elected. The one posing now is not black, certainly not Christian, and it's debatable whether or not he is a LEGITIMATE President...

Hal
I will, though, agree with you on your admonition of Patrick. To simply state that we conservatives (or Christians or Catholics or whatever) are all, 100% across the board, perfect, sinless beings is ludicrous. I believe neither that nor that Liberals or Leftists are, on the whole, evil incarnate. I'm about as conservative as it gets (you've probably argued with me before on this site), and I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. And I've known many people who to a greater or lesser degree hold your stated beliefs who were perfectly fine human beings with whom I simply had a philosphical or theological disagreement.

Robert
Gay "marriage" doesn't exist to be undermined. A man simply cannot marry a man, and calling a same-sex pairing "marriage" does not make it one.

Gay relationships exist. Gay "domestic partnerships" exist. Gays can and do have long-term monogamous relationships based on more than mutual physical attraction. But calling a dinghy an aircraft carrier doesn't mean that human-powered aircraft carriers exist.

No, sir, I would not agree with you that Atheists have a compulsion to spread their beliefs. Atheists, by the nature of the term, do not believe in a power greater than themselves. The only compulsion an athiest can fathom is that of the government. An atheist cannot believe he has a divine mandate to spread atheism because he does not accept the existance of the devine.

Most religions (Christians and Muslims are noteworthy in this respect) have a DIVINE mandate to spread the Word of God. The Gospel of Matthew ends with "Then Jesus approached and said to them, 'All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.'" (Mat 28:18-20)

God is inherently good, thus, His commands are inherently good. Man is inherently evil, and must work very hard to be good. Thus his commands do not have the guarantee of goodness.

Atheism and religious piety are not equivalents.

pancho the clueless
how about telling people they are responsible for the choices they make in their lives. That people fix their problems themselves instead of expecting society to constantly save them.

But like all lefties the idea of personal responsibility and accountability for ones actions remains a foreign concept.

But it is you lefties who champion abortions rather than stressing people make better choices for their lives.

But exactly why is society responsible for the fact we have a sizable population of functionally illiterate losers incapable of taking care of themselves.

Seems you dims control the cities where the majority of them live, and the teachers unions heavily dimorat staff the schools where these illiterates drop out from

Funny how every problem you dims enable is always someone else's fault. But being typical lefties you demand the earners must save these the losers your ilk creates

Happy Jake
You lost me on the atheist/government thing.

I would certianly agree that atheists don't have a "divine" mandate, but maybe they just want to free people from what they consider false belief. That's certainly just as noble as any believer wanting to spread the "good news".

The real evils No. 1-16...
... are found at the bottom of TownHall pages, where your web browser endlessly says "16 items remaining" to download. They appear to be the constantly-refreshing news-scan junk that we don't actually want, and which slow down TownHall pages by 90%. They do more evil to the cause of conservatism than any liberal could.

A Collective Cabal of Liberal Profession
I’m not a physicist but from the basic videos I’ve seen, nuclear reactions can be applied to politics, sin and plagues do they work the same way?

If people are matter and that matter bumps into each other the reaction of this action is going to be positive or negative and some times neutral?

Good laws make good neighbors that don’t cause the break down of civilization by a process of equality of outcomes.

If ideas are put in motion and both opposites are then struggling to find a center to equal out the pressure is there a formula to measure that process?

I know that the occult religions use formulas to manipulate the population.

Saturnalia, mixing black and white squares to make or find gray areas (relativity)

Mixing of the opposites to create a new synthesized reality where there is no property ownership, no borders, everything is of equal value, no right or wrong, sin and crime are used to break down any resistance to this change.

There is no god or you are a god or you’re like a god (self worship)
False pride, envy, and greed.

This sets the stage for the one, the monad, the bringer of light and false knowledge.

Everyone is going to put all there possessions in one pile to be redistributed to equal things out.

But we know that the cronies will get control of everything and force the rest of us to lick their boots or be crushed by those boots.

All fools day: to turn the world up side down.

I think the United States is being placed under this kind of pressure to see which side of the culture war is going to win or to change the United States into something else.

The tax payers are just losing money to subsidize the other side.

The other side is losing, the alternative reality needs lots of money and lots of favoritism.

The liberal enabling professions have job security using the occult.

Never suffer a Witch.

William
The problem with your assertion is that you are equating a person's personal feelings or beliefs(That which governs an atheist) with a divine mandate (that which governs someone who is religious). The comparison fails because the two are not equal. I don't simply think it would be better that everyone believe as I do, I have an instruction from God (which I showed you) to testify to His truth.

An atheist tries to "free" Christians from what he sees as foolish, superstitious beliefs. A Christian tries to free the atheist's soul from eternal damnation.

William - By the way
If an atheist does not recognize government as a higher authority than himself, what DOES he recognize as such?

Happy Jake
Exactly, you both (atheists and believers) think you are right. Because you make an appeal to authority doesn't mean your mandate is any more valid than the atheist's mandate.

I'm not an atheist, but I'm fairly certain you only THINK you have a "divine" mandate. Much like the atheist THINKS the "divine" part of your mandate is foolish.

- Making every excuse in the world to deny women and minorities equal pay for equal work as well as educational and athletic opportunities, because the "boys" might have to given up "something" due to budgetary concerns.
- Taking the name of God in vein, by claiming "god is on your side", when you know God doesn't get involved in petty disputes.
- Advocating the over use of the world's animal in the name of commerce, which has lead to the collapse of a number of food sources. Aggressively working to avoid any conservation of the world's limited resources.
- Refusing to acknowledge that not everything that happens to other people is their fault or that they could have "avoided" it. Refusing to admit that most of us are not clairvoent and cannot see into the future.
- Finding fault with everyone who disagrees with you as a way to bolster the correctness of your views. Outright lying about an adversary's views, statements or intentions; Making up/creating fiction about a person you have never met, talked with directly or indirectly. Assuming facts not in evidence.
- Causing harm to others by denial of their issues and problems in dealing with 3rd party insurance carriers or making the cost of care so prohibitive that the person is harmed or dies as a result.
- Denying that you have any stake in the "common good" of your community and that the tax money collected does assist in that common good.

"As to abortion, I still hold that there is no case in which abortion is not an evil act."
------------
Wouldnt you say that the presence or absence of evil is based upon the actors original intent, not the act itself?

In most cases involving the "life of the mother" circumstances (admittingly rare in modern medicine) it would be "just" to make the claim that her abortion was not motivated by evil, but instead a simple case of dominion protection as her true intent was to birth a child. I see no presence of evil in such cases.

Good reading--
To read these 25 examples several times is a very good way to see a lot of politicians in action and some hypocrite citizens all around. I am looking forward to the next 25 that Hawkins lists. Good work..

Abortion for convenience # 18?
I think a great deal of the deterioration of the ethics and morals of our country today is a direct result of the prevalence of abortion on demand. If you can end the life of an innocent unborn child, there is no limit to the evil you can talk yourself into doing, even if you don't realize it. The example of this genocide is not lost on our youth either, hence, no respect of life, theirs or anyone else's.

Great Column John
Way to go. Excellent points all.

The WORST evil
The worst thing to do is to lie, be it about a person, politics, or anything else. If you consider it, lying is something that will get people madder than murder generally will.

Haha
This list is stupid and reads the same way it would if it was made by a high school mad at the world. I'm sorry, but putting an earmark into a bill is not "evil" nor is a comedian telling a JOKE. It sounds like he started this column with two or three idea's in mind and needed filler to make it long enough.

John Hawkin's columns always have an adolescent feel to them but this one is definitely the most blatant I have seen yet from him.

I'm glad I am not married to any of
the men who post their objections to abortion. As if a woman's life, which is her own, is not entitled to make her own decisions about her health, well-being and future. Well spoken guys; we know what you think about women.

If any of the men could get pregnant, abortion would become a sacrament without due delay or debate.

so justify why congressman inserting pork spending into bills is not more akin to theft of taxpayer dollars.

John murtha has funnelled $1 billion to one of the special interest groups that has funded his re re-election campaigns. This company is duplicating service already being done in dc

Since congress has given itself the right to insert pork spending into existing bills already discussed, why isn't this theft. Exactly why does congress have the right to spend the treasury money without discussion

ok column
It is an interesting list, although I suspect it would not be hard to come up with a separate list of 25 that would be as good.

The only item that seems simply wrong is the idea that it is evil for comedians to make jokes about being good. Comedians are not preachers, their job is to make people laugh. Most people know that they are not really supposed to base their lives on the jokes of comedians. So this one is only an example of evil if the jokes aren't funny.

There is a problem with the list idea in this context, because not all evils are equal, and the list format creates the impression of equality where there is none.

A few are problematic because of their categorical nature. There are people who for different reasons require charity. And it is absurd to think that people who need charity should feel ashamed for accepting it. Hawkins certainly disagrees with Jesus on that one.

Are there really no cases in which graffit on private property could be justified? Do the readers here really think that grafiti on a planned parenthood center couldn't be justified? It is certainly wrong to hack into someone's computer under normal circumstances, but are there really no smoking gun cases that would justify it. Can Hawkins really defend torture in some cases, but not hacking?

The other weakness is that some of them (but to his credit not all) have been artificially constrained to capture only people he opposes. In general people who attack the religion (or lack thereof) of other people to feel better about their own are committing an evil. This is not only true of atheists. One could go further, people who try to prevent other people's marriages in an attempt to "protect" their own are guilty of the same kind of evil. There is no reason to draw it narrowly.

Amen to that! If more believers spoke up instead of remaining passive and quiet many things in our world would be better. The outrageous things that go on would not be tolerated and people might again feel shame when conducting themselves in such a thoughtless manner.

Mr. Hawkins: OK
"Lying to a woman to get her to sleep with you."

OK. I've several more common "sins":

"Lying to your husband about the paternity of "his" children"

--This applies to around 10% of married female population. Read R. Baker's "Sperm Wars" sometime and you'll learn abouit the promiscuous nature of supposedly monogamous women.

"Lying about being raped."

--The Duke rape fiasco was hardly a fluke. The US Air Force each conducted independent studies and found that at least 50% of all rape accusations were in fact false.

"Abusing no-fault divorce by divorcing you husband & employing your children as financial assets IOT leverage the greatest deal: house, car, alimony, child support, etc.- why drop everything IOT to pursue self fullfillment (i.e., a new boy friend) if cn't exploit your ex-husband to pay your way."

--Women trial lawyers invented "No Fault" divorce and women file for 70-75% of all divorces. Big surprise.

MR. Hawkins: OK (correction)
"Lying about being raped."

--The Duke rape fiasco was hardly a fluke. The US Air Force & PURDUE UNIVERSITY each conducted independent studies and found that at least 50% of all rape accusations were in fact false.

Atheist "evil"?
When I saw the headline for this article, I half expected most of Mr. Hawkins' 25 points to be "voting for Obama" and other variations on "disagreeing with John Hawkins' political opinions". However, I have to agree that most of the behaviors he describes are valid examples of "everyday evil" which all of us, on any side of the political fence, should avoid.

However, as one of TH's resident non-theist gadflies, I have to take exception to point # 21 " An atheist trying to ruin other people's faith in God to make himself feel better about his own unbelief." How do you know that this is the reason atheists argue against faith in God, Mr. Hawkins? Are you a mind-reader? Or is it inconceivable to you that anyone could honestly and even rationally disagree with your religious ideas? What entitles you to ascribe only the worst possible motives to anyone who disagrees with you? Should we non-theists turn it around, and assume that when Christians tell us about the joys of believing in God and the dangers of damnation, they are doing so only to make us feel bad and themselves feel good, and not because they honestly think what they are saying is true and important?

Here's an alternate example of "everday evil"; " Accusing other people of evil intentions and evil behavior, not because you have any actual evidence that they have behaved badly, but simply because they don't share your belief in God.." This seems to be closely related to your point #17, "spreading false rumors about your neighbors". It could even be viewed as a violation of your own all-important Commandment, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor". Or does that commendment not apply if your neighbor happens to be an atheist?

interesting column
Standhisground had a good addition to the list. I've seen that happen by the results on someone's vehicle.

I'll add...

Inviting relatives to family functions - in spite of their disgusting behavior - just to "keep the family together".

I hear these types of complaints to often... "Mother keeps inviting my Liberal brother to dinner with us - even though he's a deadbeat dad, a thief, a woman-hater, drunk, free-loader, etc."

Of course, Mother is being cruel to the rest of the family, which is forced to engage in small talk with the family idiot (you know, the Liberal). This leads to even more animosity, something Liberal types provoke just for sh*ts and giggles.

Eeeeeeeevil
Well, numbers 9 and 11 pretty much cover anyone who's ever written a column for townhall, including John Hawkins, so perhaps we should call on the Justice League to take care of him! I know, they only exist in comics, but if we're using comic book terminology we might as well bust out some comic book heroes.

Seriously though, I don't think you're allowed to write the word "evil" in an article unless you're working for The Daily Planet and writing an op-ed about Lex Luthor. Otherwise you do sound a teensy bit dumb.

No evil in the world?
I find the idea that there is evil in the world strangely comforting. Otherwise I have to believe that people do these terrible things we see because they are misunderstood victims of a bad childhood. I'll go with evil. Any of the actions Hawkins name are evil not only in the sense of the damage they do, but the shrivelling, acid effect they have on the actor's soul. That's what defines evil.

Most "evil" is a matter of opinion
For example: I believe a group of foreigners infiltrating communitees of religiously innocent and less technologically advanced people for the sole purpose of lying to them in order to make them live their lives in fear of a mystical sky fairy, to be very evil.

I find it most interesting that no group of people or any civilization has ever found "christianity" or "islam" or "mormonism" (etc.) without the "teaching" of someone already versed in the mythology. Why would "god" foresake and condemn to eternal h3ll billions of souls simply because they had never heard of "him"?

Liberal Solutions are Evil

Liberals have been funding and sending 'troops' to the Democrats "War on Poverty" for over 40 years now with no end in sight.

The Liberals "War on Poverty" is an abject failure and there has been hundreds of thousands of casualties.

The Liberals "War on Poverty" built 'Government Crime Centers' to concentrate those they are at war with that even the police are afraid to go into.

These Liberal 'Crime Centers' produces illegal drug distributors, killers, prostitutes, child abusers, hundreds of thousands babies killed through abortions and tens of thousands of rapes.

The Liberal funded 'War on Poverty' has succeeded in increasing poverty, crime, drug addicts, 70% illegitimacy rates and the highest prison population in the world.

"In 2006, blacks, who are less than 13 percent of the population, were 37.5 percent of all state and federal prisoners."
-----------------------------------------------
When will Liberals realize that government supported crime centers (urban housing) are a major source of crime?
-----------------------------------------------
FBI and Department of Justice
11,249 agencies; 2006 estimated population 216,685,152 for 2006

17 years old and younger percent of all:
========================================
Murder and non negligent manslaughter: 59.2% Black
Robbery: 67.4% Black

18 years old and older percent of all:
======================================
Murder and non negligent manslaughter: 50.0% Black
Robbery: 51.9% Black

Liberal solutions caused black children to be raised without a Father - Liberal solutions caused black children to be raised in schools without discipline and God.

Liberals take pride in their solutions and say "We Did All Of This For The Good Of Blacks".

Encouraged by their success - Liberals now want to bring solutions for the "Sacrifice for the Common Good" for all Americans - 'Collectivism' headed up by Obama-Messiah.

Ignorance Elected by the Ignorant

The lack of knowledge of the total failure of the vast majority of bureaucratic operations in comparison to the free market is abundantly available yet people constantly look to the governmental bureaucracy to solve their problems.

The amazing thing about this type of ignorance is that everyone has been exposed to how poorly government and large government protected companies operate, yet they fail to make the direct correlation to the bureaucratic system as the root of the problem.

This turning of a blind eye to what in reality is highly detrimental to any individual in this case “the nanny state” makes it easy to understand how snake oil salesmen make a good living.

Liberal Ignorance and inability to comprehend that Government bureaucracy as compared to the 'Free Market' is extremely costly.

Every citizen in America has been exposed at some point in their lives to Government inefficiency, whether at the drivers license bureau, dealing with the IRS or trying to make sense of property or school taxes.

Liberals believe this same Government bureaucracy can 'Save and Protect' American industry, that has shown poor judgment and made poor decisions from failing.

Liberal logic always determines that 'Investing in Failure', whether it is a business or a citizen (or illegal immigrant) always trumps investing in success.

To fairness man
Don't you think your indictment of teachers is a little over the top? I taught full-time in a public school during the ten years I had children in college and, although I left teaching in 1980, I still staunchly defend teachers.

Lazy? When I taught I got up at 5:30 to be at work by 7:15 as required, and I seldom got home before 5. My contract required me to teach at least 150 adolescents each day; no small number of them were drug-involved, pregnant, alcoholic, and known to the police. After dinner I worked on school matters until around 11, and all day every Sunday from about 10 AM until 10 PM. I also took university courses (at my own expense) the entire time to hone and improve my skills.

Overcompensated? I still have my last public school pay stub: with ten years of seniority and 30 credit hours past my Master's (maximum pay grade) I was making $24,000 a year. I was fortunate in that I had a husband to share my responsibilities; many of my fellow-teachers moonlighted a full 8-hour job somewhere (they were in great demand as night-managers of supermarkets since, trust me, if you can run a classroom, you can run just about anything).

Overpensioned? I get an annuity check every month from the years I taught. It's $250. Yes, teacher pay has gone up since then, but so have expenses, and this hasn't changed---teachers still work like dogs. Quite simply, you don't know what you're talking about.

#26 Writing idiotic opinion pieces
Well, to be fair, this doesn't actually qualify as an opinion piece; it's really just one long hissy fit. I guess this guy must fancy himself to be quite a figure of authority, because he doesn't even attempt to elaborate on any of the points in this litany, he just states them as if passing down commandments from on high. What kind of a deadline was he under? I'd love to read his thoughts on why internet trolling belongs in the same league as trying to rig an election, but no such thought or care went into this piece. I suppose it's not necessary when you're regurgitating things that have been said elsewhere on the internet (not to mention preaching to the choir), but a token effort would be nice.

Even Top-10 lists written for entertainment purposes generally provide at least some small comment on each item; this is just LAZY.

Excellent Article
All the more so for its unconventional but compelling list of evils that many of us are guilty of and few of us worry in the least about. I'd like to add a few off the top of my head:

--chronic blaming of others
--refusing to accept responsibility
--being chronically tardy at school or work
--leaving messes for others to clean
--enabling an addict
--lying/manipulating at work
--ignoring evil at work
--fault-finding
--slandering
--overcharging for services
--illicit sexual activity
--watching porn
--minding someone else's business instead
of doing one's own job
--refusing to make amends for past wrongs, sins
injuries, thefts, etc.

25 Examples of Everyday Evil
Shame on you John exposing the liberals thought process.

Sacrifice for the Common Good

"Unity and self-sacrifice, of themselves, even when fostered by the most noble means, produce a facility for hating.

Even when men league themselves mightily together to promote tolerance and peace on earth, they are likely to be violently intolerant toward those not of a like mind."
Eric Hoffer

Those Stomping Their Foot at Hawkins

In an Adult human society, one expects a logical discussion based on facts and reason.

Many Town Hall posters exhibit these traits, while peppered among these adults are 'Perpetual Children, those who have the body and intellect of an adult, but the emotions of a child.

These 'Perpetual Children' react to a column or adult posters, with remarks like a child would.

The core of their childish reactive responses are "I don't want to hear that because it doesn't conform to my view".

They either use personal attacks on the author of the column, or personal attacks toward any commenter that has made a pertinent comment.

This 'Attack the Messenger' approach, is not only childish but delusional.

Instead of the 'Attack the Messenger' approach, why not refute the information?

These 'Perpetual Children' do not use facts, logic and reason, but rather the petulance of a child, coupled with the narcissism of a child and a mixture of intuition, emotion and 'Verbal Foot Stomping'.

I agree
>These 'Perpetual Children' do not use facts, logic and reason, but rather the petulance of a child, coupled with the narcissism of a child and a mixture of intuition, emotion and 'Verbal Foot Stomping'.<

And here's a perfect example:

>Liberals think they can decide what's good and evil at any given moment.<

Assuming that a person can logically attribute what millions of 'liberals'(a term applied generically with little definition) think, is the height of arrogance and self-righteousness, and, yes, evil.

Lying politicians
I think the countless politicians who lie about what they really stand for in order to gain votes from people who would NOT vote for them otherwise, are eeeveeeel.

Liberals are Against Individual Rights

One of the underlying "Principles" (if it can be called that) of all Despots and Modern Day Liberalism in America, is NO GOD or a weakened version of God that is Subject to the State.

Replacing God or God's morality with the 'Government', making the 'State' the 'Divine Law' and ultimate authority.

This replaces the 'Moral Codes of Religion', which is the only impediment to complete Government 'Control' of the individual.

What becomes 'Sacrifice for the Common Good', negates any Individual rights.

Individual Rights, is the 'First Line of Defense' to stop any Totalitarian Government.

A primary element of individualism is individual responsibility for self-determination, decisions, actions, deeds and accepting responsibility for everything one does or fails to do.

Liberals can be classed as against Individual rights.

Liberals are 'Collectivists' by definition, their identities are based on 'Collective' groups like race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preferences or industry.

The demarcation line between 'Modern Day Liberals' and 'Individualists', is simply 'Individual Rights' versus 'Collective Rights'.

Liberals Use Class Warefare

"If this is a class-ridden society denying "access" to upward mobility to those at the bottom, why is it that immigrants can come here at the bottom and then rise to the top?

One obvious reason is that many poor immigrants come here with very different ambitions and values from that of poor Americans born into our welfare state and imbued with notions growing out of attitudes of dependency and resentments of other people's success.

The fundamental reason that many people do not rise is not that class barriers prevent it but that they do not develop the skills, values and attitudes which cause people to rise.

The liberal welfare state means they don't have to and liberal multiculturalism says they don't need to change their values because one culture is just as good as another. In other words, liberalism is not part of the solution, but part of the problem.

Racism is supposed to put insuperable barriers in the path of non-whites anyway, so why knock yourself out trying? This is another deadly message, especially for the young.

But if immigrants from Korea or India, Vietnamese refugees, and others can come here and move right on up the ladder, despite not being white, why are black and white Americans at the bottom more likely to stay at the bottom?"

oh Lilly
Things have changed. Teachers in California are getting over 100,000 a year. I don't see them working the same hours that you speak about. But you also forget all the half days, holidays, spring break, etc...and summer. The administrators are getting even more money. I don't blame the teachers for taking the money, if someone is going to give it to you. But it is no sustainable. California threatens, about every three months, that they don't have the money and need to fire teachers. They need to cut salaries. If the teachers still want to teach, then great. If not, they are free to choose another profession. Government work was not meant to be lucrative. Remember, that the money comes from the tax payer.

The Genuine Cactushead
Pork inserted into bills is not closed to discussion. Congresspeople simply choose not to discuss it because it takes time. Is it theft when it's simply ignored, and sometimes even perpetuated and used, by Congresspeople, some of whom are even championed on this website?

Another that is not considered when the blanket term evil is applied is that the money used for pork spending does actually go somewhere(most of the time). It's not just disappearing into a black hole or some billionaires pocket(much to the Republicans chagrin). The necessity of each pork spending allocation is definitely debatable but the money is not just disappearing. A lot of it goes back into the economy because it's used to support projects that require products and labor.

I'm not saying pork is okay and should never be questioned, but I am saying that all pork cannot be blanketed with the term "evil". Murtha's use of pork is definitely shady but that's not the way that every pork project is.

Littering
I hate littering.
What kind of a person throws their trash on the ground and teaches their children to do it also. Who do they think is going to pick it up? Why should they expect others to pick up after them.
I spend my walks picking up other people's trash and then I have to pay to dispose of it. Another thing, cover up your recycle bins on windy days.

Litter makes everyone feel crummy.

I also hate lying.
Stretching the truth and leaving things out is also lying. Why do we allow politicians and media outlets to redefine terms and call us extremists. They are lying. I'm no more extreme than my great grandmother.

Joycey
Well, extreme is relative. You can be labeled extreme if you vary greatly from the norm. Thus, extreme is relative to whatever the norm is.

An example of evil?
Yesterday, I posted this on the Mona Charen column about the Islamic practice of child brides:

"a visiting Pakistani rapist testified that his victims had no right to say no, because they were not wearing a headscarf.
The German journalist Udo Ulfkotte told that in Holland, you can now see examples of young, unveiled Moroccan women with a so-called "smiley"... the girl gets one side of her face cut up from mouth to ear, ..a warning to other Muslim girls who should refuse to wear the veil."

Taft, in defense of Islam posted:

"Israel has very bad human rights problems too.A rampaging sex industry, and illegal use of fire power on civilians.
Don't listen to these neo nazis, Udo Ulfkotte, who preach hate and intolerance. Islam is not our enemy,.."

Taft says:
"I also stay away from "Hamas friendly sites" and look for unbiased opinions. "

So Taft quotes this article written by George Bisharat , a prominent Palestinian-American professor of law at a school in San Francisco, defender of the right of return of Palestinian refugees:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123154826952369919.html

Deciding good and evil
Retired Geek posted in part:
"Liberals think they can decide what's good and evil at any given moment."

Hmmm... I'm not exactly a liberal (except maybe the "classical" variety) but I think the liberals are right on this. In fact, I think all of us-- liberals and conservatives and everyone else-- not only *can* decide what's good and evil at any given moment, we *have to*. We have no choice. Oh sure, we can try to delegate the decision to an ancient book written by people who believed (or claimed to believe) they were channeling God. But ultimately, *we* still have to decide whether to accept that book as infallible (and which parts of it to follow and which parts to ignore or explain away), or to seek advice from a wider wariety of sources, or to make the best decision we can for ourselves.
This is not to say that good and evil are purely a matter of opinion (the straw-man put up by people who insist that their particular religion represents "absolute truth"). The nature of the universe we live in and of ourselves as human beings, determines that certains kinds of behavior are more conducive to human life and happiness than others. But we still have to figure out for ourselves "in a given situation"which kind of behavior is which. Life unfortunately doesn't have an instruction book. (No, IMO, the Bible isn't it... or if it is, it's worse written and more confusing than one of those VCR instruction manuals written by illiterate Koreans.)

another evil
Not seeing the truth when it hits you in the face and not telling the truth. It seems truth is lacking in alot of quarters lately. It is hard to believe just about anyone anymore unless you know them well. Politicians are especially bad at this. Obama has mastered nontruth telling or what is normally called lying. He will say one thing one day and the next say he did not say it.

Shamelessly living off the govt
# 23 is my biggest pet peeve. As a social worker, it makes me sick to see how many people think nothing of living off the gov't. Disability fraud abounds.

western bondbeam
Are you familiar with the saying "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions?" There are plenty of evil things that people do thinking that they are doing a good. A priest I knew once made this comparison: Sure, it's easy to decide between an obvious good and an obvious evil. The hard part is deciding between an obvious good and an APPARENT good, that is something that appears to be good, but isn't.

As I said, abortion, regardless of intent, is an evil act. Period. The vast majority who have them either simply do not understand that fact or are faced with a decision where they are led to belive that abortion is a good act.

So, no, evil intent is not required for an act to be evil.

William
(1) Sin is a word that means "evil act." A sin is an act that has the effect of turning the sinner away from God. Atheism is, in and of itself, an evil philosophy because of its intent to turn people away from God. Therefore, regardless of the fact that they think they are doing people a service by "freeing" them from religion, they are causing great spiritual harm, instead.

(2) I don't "THINK" I have a divine mandate to spread the Word of God. I copied the text of that mandate in an earlier post AND described where to find it. I do not recall who said this, but: "For the unbeliever, no proof is possible. For the believer, no proof is necessary." As such, I do not attempt to prove God's existence, but I know He exists.

(3) You say you aren't an atheist. Why, then, do you persist in equating atheist thought with religious belief? They aren't the same. Pope Benedict XVI is not the moral equivalent of Michael Newdow or Karl Marx (two noted atheists.)

(4) If Atheists are right, then I lose nothing by believing. I'm not missing anything, because the hedonistic lifestyle doesn't appeal to me, anyway, and I am not, as they dishonestly portray it, a slave to my religion. I am free to do as I please, with the understanding that I do it at my own peril. At the worst we all end up in the same place, 6 feet underground. If I am right, unrepentant Atheists lose everything, because while they may believe themselves more "free" than I am in this life, they have, in fact, become slaves to their own passions and will spend eternity in hell, primarily for denouncing God.

As I said, your argument hinges on the idea that atheism and religious belief are morally or functionally equal philosophies. They aren't.
