Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

20) China hosts the Olympics: The ChiComs held the Olympics and although most of the event has already gone down the memory hole, the massive opening ceremony, Michael Phelps winning eight gold medals, the filthy air, and the rampant Chinese cheating in gymnastics won't soon be forgotten.

19) Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar: Had 130,000 people died in a natural disaster in the U.S., it would have been the story of the year times ten. But, since it happened in Myanmar, it barely makes the list. That might seem unfair, but that's the way of the world.

18) Ted Stevens Indicted: In a less scandal-prone year, having the longest serving Republican senator being indicted on seven counts would have been a huge story. As is, the crooked old codger almost got re-elected.

17) Bernard Madoff pulls off the biggest scam in history: Charles Ponzi and the guy who wrote the first Nigerian spam email are going to have to move over because Bernard Madoff's 50 billion dollar flim-flam topped 'em both.

16) The Eliot Spitzer call girl scandal: Ahem,

There once was a mayor named Spitzer
He met a prostitute and he kissed her
Then the press started to flay
His job went away
While the publicity made her money hand over tryster

15) The Mumbai terrorist attacks: Terrorists launched coordinated attacks all across Mumbai, including at the Taj Mahal. During the attacks, which lasted for more than three days, 170 people were killed. It actually sounds like something you'd see at the movies, except there was no Indian Chuck Norris to swoop in and save the day.

14) Rod Blagojevich peddles Obama's Senate seat: The governor of Illinois was engaged in various illegal shenanigans including shaking down a children's hospital and peddling the barely used Senate seat of our current President-elect. Now, everyone wants to know how much Obama and his staff knew, whether Blago's appointee is going to be seated, and how long Blago will be in office before he's removed or thrown in jail. It's political soap opera at its finest.

13) Prop 8 passes in Cali: After losing Prop 8 in California, gay supporters of the bill went on a rampage and proved that they're actually much less tolerant of differing opinions than the Christians they're always lecturing about tolerance.

12) The Jena 6: If you needed a pre-Obama indication of how amazingly non-racist this country is, the over-the-top outrage over 6 black thugs being threatened with jail time for brutally beating a white kid should do it. If this is the best example of a racist incident anyone can come up with, we can officially declare America as free of significant racial prejudice.

11) Obama defeats Hillary: The battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton was so long, so brutal, and so epic that it should have featured Hillary Clinton screaming, "From Hell's heart, I stab at thee," -- Wrath of Khan style -- as she dispensed some final scathing press release.

10) Iran continues to pursue nukes: There has been a lot of discussion about how close Iran is to nuclear weapons, but what's not up for debate is that diplomacy has thus far failed to dissuade them. Unless something changes, it looks like we're headed towards a choice between military strikes on Iran or a half-dozen unstable states run by dictators and religious fanatics developing nuclear weapons to protect themselves from Persian ambition.

9) Russia's experiment with democracy ends: Vladimir Putin was replaced as President of Russia by his hand puppet, Dmitri Medvedev, while he runs the country as Prime Minister. Thus ended Russia's experiment with democracy and officially began the tenure of Vladimir Putin, dictator-for-life.

8) The John Edwards affair: The Silky Pony shocked Americans by cheating on his cancer stricken wife....with a woman.

7) Russia invades Georgia: Russia invaded Georgia -- and they got away with it, too. It looks like the evil empire is back in business after taking a little break.

6) The Big 3 Bailout: After the banks got their bailout, next up to plate were the Big 3 car companies, which demanded billions just to make it until next year. Happily, the Republicans blocked the bailout in the Senate, but President Bush gave them enough money to hold out until Obama can pay off the union's support of his campaign with tens and perhaps even hundreds of billions of dollars next year.

5) John McCain selects Sarah Palin as his running mate: John McCain's selection of conservatism's new sweetheart, Sarah Palin, was just about the only thing worth cheering during his presidential campaign. At the start of the year, few Americans knew she existed. But by the end of the year, the moose killer, hockey mom thriller had turned into the biggest rock star in the Republican Party.

4) The Oil Price Yo-Yo: Oil prices surged to over $4 a gallon and people blamed Big Oil for jacking up the price. Then, after the global financial crisis, a drop in demand drove gas below $2 gallon which caused people to finally realize that supply and demand were primarily responsible for the price jump -- just kidding. Next time gas goes up, everyone will blame the oil companies again.

3) The Turnaround in Iraq: You can tell that we're winning in Iraq because the same liberal media that lovingly covered every terrorist attack in sickening detail and brought on "expert" after "expert" to declare that victory was impossible is now doing their best to studiously ignore everything that's going on there.

2) Barack Obama wins the presidency: America's first black President has been elected and soon, Americans are hoping to find out what he wants to do and whether or not he's qualified for the job.

1) The Bailout Crisis: Shockingly, it turned out that people with no money weren't as good a risk for expensive home loans as Barney Frank and Chris Dodd thought. After housing prices dropped, people who shouldn't have been given loans in the first place couldn't pay their mortgages, the economy tanked, the government spent trillions to shore up Fannie, Freddie Mac, and the banks. Now the government is using this crisis as an excuse to get an ownership stake in whole industries. This was the deathblow for John McCain's presidential campaign, led to a global financial crisis, could lead to a long-term economic slump, and has the potential to permanently damage our economy.

#14 Blagojevich And The Democrats
January 2, 2009

BY NATASHA KORECKI, CHRIS FUSCO AND LYNN SWEET
Days before Gov. Blagojevich was charged with trying to sell President-elect Barack Obama's U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder, top Senate Democrat Harry Reid made it clear who he didn’t want in the post: Jesse Jackson, Jr., Danny Davis or Emil Jones.

Rather, Reid called Blagojevich to argue he appoint either state Veterans Affairs chief Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.
------------------------------------------------
Harry Reid, the landrover doing his behind-the--scenes manuvering. No racists in the Democrat Party, though. Oh,no!!

"The simpleton thinking of the left never ceases to amaze me. How in the heck with that kind of stupidity do you even manage to dress yourself?"

Pretty easily, actually. Remember, we're the educated party. You're the party of 50-80 year old retirees shaking their fists while they listen to talk radio and remember the "good ole days." How does it feel to be apart of a dying breed?

"What succeeds is conservatism when it is applied, as by conservatives."

So, like I said, if it succeeds, it's conservatism, if not, then it's not. Logic that cannot fail.

"What doesn't succeed is when those that tout conservatism, but do not actually apply conservative principles as evidenced by McCain's loss."

As I'm sure you know, McCain wasn't elected because he ran a terrible campaign and selected an abhorrent vice-presidential nominee. If the country wanted a true conservative, they would have nominated one (R.Paul). But of course, true conservatism scares the pants out of ordinary Americans more than conservatism-lite.

"Now as your stupid state considers a mileage tax on it's drivers please tell me how that is gonna work and apply to what industry you idiots have left."

Idiots? Wow, that cuts deep. I'll be sure to tell that to all the CA transplants that move up here. You must be referring to industry like Intel, Nike, HP, Google, etc. Yeah, we're struggling.

How did it feel to have your home lose 10-30% of its value in 2008? (snicker)

You and whose army
"Conservatives cannot fail. If "they" fail, they are not conservatives. If "they" succeed, they are conservatives. Great! Error proof logic!!!"

The simpleton thinking of the left never ceases to amaze me. How in the heck with that kind of stupidity do you even manage to dress yourself? Mr Hawkins
Before it is too late. We need to prepare ourselves and group together with a plan to fight the tyrannical socialists. David Keene makes the point and asks the question in a Rush interview. The OBAMA people think that the American public wants OBAMA to do everything that he has promised. If the politicians believe this they will overreach and quickly. The question is will conservatives be able to respond effectively enough during that period to stop them.
We cannot depend on Republican leadership.
And it will be useless to talk about the horrors after the fact.
What will you do to be a leader and get the conservatives ready.
We need a plan now!

#12
I disagree this fact shows very real racism.

This just in.. continued
It has been noted that BO will sign some bills of difficulty, meaning bills of a nature that are opposed too his way of thinking but are passable, on the bottom line -- "Present". Thereby relinquishing any palpable responsibility.

This just in
"Michelle declares lack of pride"
This in and of it self declares a minimal representation of responsiveness to expression of nationality. Where has she been for 43 years? Has she been lost in herself for that long? It sounds like she will act as a facade of a make believe first lady, pretentious of most acts or just plain acting the part.
------------------------------------------

In a just unreported and unreleased doctors report( X-Ray pictures) it was noted by physicians viewing said pictures, "this guy is missing his guts and has somewhat minimal backbone" His support structure is just made up with wishful thinking and phantom limb syndrome. "No wonder some people consider him an "empty Suit"".

TruthHurts? - how is bitterland?
You have finally made me realize why Obama referred to your statesmen and women as 'bitter angry people who cling to guns and god'. You do sound bitter. You and your fellow statespeople deserve the most inexperienced soon to become 'worse than Carter' president in the history of our nation. Furthermore, you deserve the rude awakening to the fact that he is not a messiah, has no new ideas to offer this nation and will fail to meet ANY ONE PROMISE he made during his campaign. But then again, he is living the life of change he envisioned - a shirtless in HI picture and a $9 million dollar home rental for christmas with the family. CHANGE HAS REALLY COME TO THE OBAMA FAMILY. Now they don't need Rezko to subsidize their housing. LOL!

Michelle declares lack of pride
I think this should have made the list. After all, when a first lady-elect declares pride in her country for the first time at age 44, one must wonder how she plans to represent this so called infamous country. Also, she now wants to be paid for performing first lady duties. Didn't those duties come with the job of marrying the president?

I think Michelle's lack or pride and request for pay as first lady should have made the list. After all, she is the first black first lady of the USSA.

DavidMac: I agree! He was (is) right

on our economic meltdown... and I think we all knew it... at least on some level...

But, it was, without question, his foreign policy that made me run in the other direction. He shot himself in the foot during the first Republican debate.

SJDoc
I live in Ron Paul's district and didn't vote for him.

I do agree with almost everything he stands for and I've voted for him AS MY REP for many years. I write short, pithy comments to him once or twice a month on current issues.

I simply think his stance on foreigh policy was a deal-killer. If he had simply changed that one position, he'd have had my vote all the way.

#22 - The Ron Paul presidential campaign
--
The only genuine grassroots American Conservative spirit in the 2008 presidential election cycle - the only genuine energy and enthusiasm in the whole sordid, stinking, stupid process of appointing Crash Test Johnnie as the Kamikaze Candidate - was found in the campaign of the only man who sought the nomination on the basis of strict adherence to the Republican Party platform.

Perhaps *the* biggest story of 2008, undoubtedly because the MSM and the Republican Party did everything in their power to ignore this story to death.

Wanna know why the Republicans lost, guys?

Because the only man who *dared* to take a truly American Conservative position in this whole gymkhana was the same guy who called the 2008 Economic Meltdown precisely as he knew it was going to happen, and began doing it clearly, powerfully, and pungently more than a year in advance of the volcano's eruption.

Some kinda "kook," that Dr. Paul.

He's been absolutely goddam right, of course.

And don't all you flaming RINOs look like a beachful of whales dying in the sun by comparison?

=====
"If there were a generic one-word expression for 'one whose fear of the uncertainties of success moves him to surrender at the very moment of victory', it would be 'Republican'."

-- L. Neil Smith

aurorawatcher
Yes, I agree that conservative ideology hasn't failed.

I agree that a certain group of people on the right and left have become so pathologically in need of self-esteem and self-righteousness that they kowtow to any and all "minorities".

Bush panders to the Mexicans by allowing them unfettered access across the border. Obama will play the race card to the hilt, allowing the guilty white racists on the left to feel good about themselves by voting for him.

I wonder how the Americans who have Irish ancestory are feeling today? Oh, yeah, they don't count as a minority because they have white skin.

This country is in for a rough 4 years unless Obama has an epiphany and becomes EVERYONE'S president.

Aura
"It's not the underlying ideology of conservativism that has failed; it's the bozos we elected...blahblahblah"

In other words:

Conservatives cannot fail. If "they" fail, they are not conservatives. If "they" succeed, they are conservatives. Great! Error proof logic!!!

"Unfortunately, this generation is so afraid to say anything against a person of color"

Unlike the last generation that had no such fear. Man, we've come a long way. For the worse, apparently.

Also, did you watch Fox News during the election? Those terrorist fist-jabbing baby mommas didn't seem that "afraid," wouldn't you agree?

DavidMac
It's not the underlying ideology of conservativism that has failed; it's the bozos we elected under the premise that they were conservatives. Maybe in 2012 we'll have better sense and mount a true conservative candidate for president. Unfortunately, this generation is so afraid to say anything against a person of color, I'm afraid we may just reelect Obama because he "deserves it" as a minority. He's going to have to be a really bad president for that and, for my country's sake, I hope he's not. Kind of an odd Catch-22 there, huh?

Creekboy (TX) @ 12:23 PM
Creekboy wrote, "The complete and utter failure of the modern conservative ideology."

Yeah, right, the "failure" of free-market capitalism, the "failure" of personal freedom, the "failure" of less intrusive government . . . those are conservative principles.

Are those the ones that ideologically failed?

anncoulterguilty ofHOT
What are you smokin'?

Ted Stevens
The crooked old codger was almost re-elected because the Dem challenger is even more crooked and a lot younger. Alaskans know this and the wise ones wanted to re-elect Stevens, so that Palin might have a chance to put someone into office who might serve Alaska's interests rather than those of the Democratic Party or the environmental interests. Since Palin is on none-too-friendly terms with the oil industry, it was likely her appointment would have been less friendly with the oil industry as well.

Instead, we're stuck with Mark Begich for the next six years - someone on the Alaskan Delegation who does not, never has, and never will support Alaska's interests.

Better the old codger's seat be filled with an appointment than this liberal crook be in there for six years. But, hey, Palin will be finishing her second term as governor when Mark comes up for re-election, so we'll have a good alternative to push him out of office. Palin for Senate in 2014!

Little Boy
Wonder why Little Boy didn't take the time to tell all you nutbags what percent of foreclosures were the result of NINA loans?

Ah, nevermind. The financial crisis was solely the fault of liberals and poor people, working in concert, as usual.

biggest stories of 2008
You missed a major story - as did the MSN - which was the successful shoot-down of that dead spy satellite on orbit. That amazing feat, with SDI missiles not designed for that sort of target, together with other successful missile intercepts, showed that we finally have the missile defense capability Ronald Reagan envisioned (and for which he was ridiculed by the Left). A major story of 2009 will be the failure by a Democratic Congress and President Obama to deploy this defense system!

I wish a land with hot libs & cons

Democrats fought for the bailout. Republicans were dragged to their Aye vote reluctantly begging for more clarity and oversight.

Gee, Barney Frank negotiated for the Bailout Defense' throughout. A Wallstreet trader before he commenced climbing the Gov't ladder. What do you think about that???

Top 20: right, oops, sorry bushdemocrats, correct...
Options: acceptable variety of nature's conservative ages or generations, some, looking as hot as good as they do think...
sources: proved correct on Iraq and the war, too much organized gov local community system ruled by acorns, rezcos, sovietsenateseats, too much to let "operate" "govfreely or unchallenged at list"...
and pursuing their (we) oppositors, national or foreigners, in or outland?

There is only one story of 2008.
The complete and utter failure of the modern conservative ideology.

http://zfacts.com/p/318.html

The bailout crisis?
The bailout is an attempt to correct the economic collapse. The collapse is the problem and the attempt at correction has neither failed nor solved the problem. Time will tell. The collapse is a failure of Frank and Dodd and Cox and Bush. Republicans are making a mistake in implying that the bailout, a Republican and somewhat bypartisan attempt at correction, is the problem.

TruthHurts - Tell the Truth

Popular votes 65,293,083 to 57,325,487 Obama. Obama won by 7,967,596 votes.

NOT 70 million.

hey corndog
"Seventy-million morons vote for a man with absolutely zero qualifications lending credence to the argument that voters should pass a certification test before being allowed to participate in an election."
It's going to be a hoot watching 'That one' fumble. Remember that the oval office doesn't have a "Present" button, so obambi is going to have to actually make a freaking decision. "

I LAUGHED OUT LOUD!!! YOU ARE RIGHT ON, DUDE!!!

TruthHurts
Yes, indeed, that was a big one, and a big part of that story were the reasons people gave for voting for him. Some of my favorites: We need change, he's not Bush, he has a good jump shot, McCain is old, he's black, he's cool, and, of course, the woman on Youtube who said she wouldn't have to worry about mortgage payments or buying gas after he's inaugurated. Of all the people I asked why they supported him, I got exactly one answer having anything to do with a policy position, and that answer was from a teenage girl too young to vote. So yes, you're right, the most uninformed voters in the 232-year history of this nation ought to have been listed as a big story.

TruthHurts

Your post has some merit, but for the wrong reasons.

It should be "Seventy-million morons vote for a man with absolutely zero qualifications lending credence to the argument that voters should pass a certification test before being allowed to participate in an election."

I'm looking forward to 2009. It's going to be a hoot watching 'That one' fumble. Remember that the oval office doesn't have a "Present" button, so obambi is going to have to actually make a freaking decision.

Hawkins list won't put it first, but....
The top story of 2008 is: Seventy-million...More people voted for the former Junior Senator from Illinois than anyone, at any time, for any office, in any single election, in the 232 year history of the United States of America....The Conservatives are better off NOT listing the "top 20 stories" of 2008...They're better off turning the page to 2009.

Chris Dodd
The sad part is, when Dodd is up for re-election in my state, he will win.

good summary...missing one
another big story is how Chris Dodd and Barney Franks personally gained from the mess before the bail-out and how the foxes are running the hen house still. Or the inmates running the asylum. The truly biggest part is how the Liberals were able to turn around the financial crisis, being a direct relationship to failed liberal policies, and place it squarely on the doorstep of the Republicans and Bush.

The scary part of the Dem take over is not the Presidency (though that may still become the scarier part), but it was leaving the likes of Pelosi and Reid in charge.

John, You're missing one from your list

#21 - obambi wins; Gun sales jump 35%.

Pistol, as always I concur with your assessment. Ammo will be the new currency.

And...
Mr. Hawkins, please write about this: http://nfpa.typepad.com/firesafecigarettes/

Thank you

I hope they enjoyed it!
Last year Bush and the democrat congress took a little foray into the wonderful world of socialism. That excursion cost every taxpayer $60k each.

So, on April 15th everybody just write an extra check for $60k and everything will be just fine! LOL!

Sorry, Hawkins
but number 17 wasn't quite accurate. Madoff's scam, big as it was, wasn't the biggest scam in history. Put him in second place--a very distant second. The winner? FDR and Social Security.

ColinCody
The potential is certainly there, and i'm implementing your advice before receiving it. Judging by the burgeoning ammo prices, the battle packs i bought a few years ago were a better investment than my stock portfolio. I would not be surprised if cartridges became a medium of exchange. Inflation is the historic way governments pay off unfunded entitlements and i agree it is on the way. Farmland and housing are always worth something and i believe mortgages will be paid off with pocket change in a few years. An apocalipse or a decent speedy recovery are about equally likely IMHO, with the most likely outcome being European style collectivism and stagnation. Its the young, the poor and the naive who put us here. If there is payback to be made, they will pay it. They have traded their inheritance of opportunity for the potage of security.

TIME TO MAKE PLANS FOR SURVIVAL
"...and has the potential to permanently damage our economy."

Yes it does, John, and yours is the understatement of the last sixty years. This gargantuan bailout with at least as much more to come has the very real potential to turn us into a full blown failed socialist economy whose fiat money is utterly worthless much like Germany after WWI. And I believe it will do exactly that sometime within the next eight years barring a miracle from God himself. It is time to turn funny money into gold and other tangible assets (including at least one gun) for preservation of life and wealth. Moving to Argentina or Chili might not be a bad idea also.
