Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

12) Mike Huckabee attacks Romney's religion: In an interview with the New York Times magazine, Mike Huckabee asked, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

Why Huckabee chose to give Romney's supporters a chance to bash him for being "anti-Mormon" just for asking the question is unknown, but the comment, which Huckabee later apologized for, helped enable his detractors to paint him as a man exploiting his faith to help win an election.

11) Mitt Romney "saw" his father march with Martin Luther King: This is a bit of a strange controversy because Romney's father certainly did participate in civil rights marches and there have also been people who have come forward and claimed to have seen George Romney march with Martin Luther King.

However, Romney certainly didn't see it, he certainly didn't march with MLK personally as he has previously claimed, and Mitt's response to this flap certainly makes visions of Bill Clinton's infamous response from his 1998 Grand Jury testimony dance through your head.

Here's Clinton: "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is."

Now, here's Mitt: "The reference of seeing my father lead in civil rights and seeing my father march with Martin Luther King is in the sense of this figurative awareness of and recognition of his leadership. I've tried to be as accurate as I can be. If you look at the literature or look at the dictionary, the term 'saw' includes being aware of -- in the sense I've described."

Oh yeah, he definitely has a little Clinton in him.

10) Obama's Flag Pin and National Anthem Flap: In his quest to win the Democratic primaries, Barack Obama tried to reach out to the patriotism-loathing netroots by making a big public show of not wearing a flag pin,

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says he doesn't wear an American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for "true patriotism" since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Obama then was photographed refusing to hold his hand over his heart during the national anthem.

His response to that, bizarrely, was that some people were falsely claiming he didn't hold his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance when really, it was the national anthem.

Of course, you still hold your hand over your heart during the national anthem, so the point was moot. Long story short, it looks like Obama's unpatriotic "true patriotism" didn't poll as well as he thought it would.

9) Hillary's campaign says Obama is a coke-dealing Muslim liar who has been lying since kindergarten: In what may be the most grotesque display of dirty politics since the Nixon administration, Hillary Clinton's surrogates publicly and falsely suggested that Obama might have been a coke dealer, is secretly a Muslim, and that a kindergarten essay proved he had been lying about his desire to be President.

Had a Republican engaged in the exact same tactics, he would have been accused of being the worst sort of racist -- which incidentally, will probably also be what happens to Hillary Clinton in certain quarters if her repulsive smear tactics enable her to beat Obama in the Democratic primaries.

8) Fred Thompson skips New Hampshire For Leno: On the day of his much anticipated entry into the race, Fred Thompson chose to skip a New Hampshire debate and instead introduced himself to the public on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno."

That started him out on the wrong foot in New Hampshire and he never recovered in that state. Today he's running 6th in New Hampshire, behind Ron Paul -- which means that if he bombs in Iowa, his campaign may be dead shortly after New Hampshire finishes voting on January 8th.

7) Southern Fried Hillary: In what was really a backhanded slap at black men, Bill Clinton was called the first black President, a label that he readily latched onto for political purposes.

Well, when his charisma-challenged wife tried to pick up where he left off in a black church in Alabama, the result was a horrible Southern accent of the sort you'd expect to hear at a New York Party as they tried to imitate an inbred, hillbilly yokel. It sounded something like this,

"IIIIIII don't feel noways tired. I come too fahrr from where I started frum...III culd have listened all afternuune."

6) John Edwards' running feud with Ann Coulter: Ann Coulter was roundly -- and rightly -- slammed for calling John Edwards a "f*ggot" at CPAC last year.

Unfortunately for John Edwards, instead of ignoring it, he tried to hype it for the sake of publicity and fundraising which not only caused Ann Coulter to continue to go after him, but led to lots of conversations that went about like this,

Person 1: Ann Coulter was wrong to call John Edwards a f*ggot.

Person 2: You're right. She should have just called him a little girl or Silky Pony.

Person 1: ...Or the Breck Girl. I mean he is pretty girlish. But, oh that Ann Coulter -- she always goes too far!

Then, Edwards made the mistake of compounding his error by having his wife call in to attack Coulter on Hardball. That's really the way to convince people that you're not as much of a wimp as they think you are -- by sending your sick wife out to fight your battles for you.

5) Fred Thompson's rejection of a Constitutional amendment to ban abortion: In the name of Federalism, Fred Thompson rejected a Constitutional amendment to ban abortion on Meet the Press.

At first glance, that might seem to be a minor matter since there is no chance of getting it passed any time soon -- but that was the very moment that the bottom started falling out of his campaign as more than a few social conservatives slowly began the migration from him to Huckabee.

4) John Edwards' $400 Haircut: Let me ask the same question a voter asked him on the campaign trail: "Senator, I was just wondering: since you're on this national poverty tour, how do you justify spending $400 on a haircut?"

Of course, you don't and that has summed up the silliness of John Edwards' campaign. He's a pampered, super wealthy lawyer who has built a whole campaign around being a supposed champion of little girls who can't afford a $10 coat at Wal-Mart. It sounds fake, it is fake and people know it's fake.

3) John McCain supports the Senate amnesty bill: At one point, John McCain was considered the front runner for the GOP nomination, but his support for the incredibly unpopular "amnesty" bill in Congress did so much damage to his campaign's poll numbers and fundraising that many political analysts wrote his campaign off for dead.

Since then, because of the weakness of the field, he has been able to climb back into contention, but his continued support for amnesty is like a 45 pound barbell tied to his back. If he doesn't get the nomination, it'll be because of his support of amnesty. If he does get the nomination and goes on to lose in the general election, it'll be because of amnesty. In other words, the biggest hurdle standing between John McCain and the White House isn't his Republican or Democratic opponents, it's his desire to make 12 million fence-jumping, social-security-number-swindling scofflaws into American citizens over the fervent protestations of most members of his own party.

2) Fred Thompson gets in the race late: For months and months, Fred Thompson sat on the sidelines writing columns and doing radio appearances as his poll numbers went up. He thought, with some justification, that there wasn't much of a reason to officially declare his candidacy when he was becoming more popular without getting in the race.

However, on the other hand, while Fred was waiting, the conservative media was picking other candidates to back, top talent was signing on with other campaigns, his supporters were starting to get impatient, and expectations were building to super human heights.

Then, when Fred finally jumped in the race in September of this year, he was mercilessly savaged while he -- and his campaign -- got up to speed under a microscope.

Had he gotten in earlier, say in July of this year, there wouldn't have been as much scrutiny during that first month and he would also have probably raised more money than any other candidate in the third quarter, which would have given him much needed cash and a sign that his campaign was "for real."

As of yet, Thompson's campaign still hasn't recovered from the poor first impression that he made because he got in the race so late. That could turn out to be the difference between Fred Thompson, the GOP nominee -- and Fred Thompson, the guy who was out of the race by the middle of January.

1) Hillary's drivers' licenses for illegals flap: The wicked witch of New York was cruising along, looking inevitable, when she mangled a question about drivers' licenses for illegal aliens in what was probably the single worst debate performance for a top tier candidate this year.

After that horrific performance, Obama started rising in the polls while Hillary's campaign started making unforced errors and playing dirty. If Hillary Clinton doesn't capture the nomination, that botched debate question will be the key moment that led to her defeat and even if she does become the Democratic nominee, the aftermath of that controversy has revealed to the GOP how fragile Hillary Clinton really is when she's challenged.

Barack
You have to wonder if Obama really thought he could win the White House solely with the numbers of Americans who are actually impressed by such political grandstanding as refusing to wear a simple pin or show the proper respects during the National Anthem.

I he did, it shows an astoundingly tone deaf grasp of this country and it's people.

Most people I know would look at somebody who disrespected the anthem in much the same way as they wouldn't want to dine with somebody who chews with their mouth open.

It's called manners.

The Real Top Campaign Blunder
Top blunder is not challenging sitting and ex legislators on why they have not submitted legislation to implement their agenda. Hillary, Obama, John on the dem side. Ron, Fred and Jon on the Repub side.

This is why governors and Veeps tend to win the nomination and the november election.

Their voting record is not the same as proposals and implementing coalitions to pass legislation. I don't give a rip on what they have voted no on. If they are from the legislative branch and they have tried and failed to pass legislation, ok. But sitting on their butts and voting no? No way!

Citizen Carrier, stdguage
Good points from both of you. B Hussein O proved he hangs out with the far left and is indeed out of touch with a lot of the people whose votes he must have to go anywhere. A lot of prominent and noisy Dems are America bashers, but most are not.
My jaundiced attitude towards candidates from the legislative branch, upon examination, does seem to be based on exactly the reasons you propose, stdguage. Of course, the executive records of Mitt and Rudy hardly send me into peroxisms of joyful enthusiasm.

Boutte
Howard Dean pulled in a substantial amount of money right before he came in 3rd in Iowa and his campaign imploded -- oddly enough, because of his cartoon Geek followers.

Since nobody has mentioned any gaffes Ron Paul made (because almost nobody is paying attention), how about his insistence that the USA caused 9/11, that there are no terrorists, and so on? Not to mention that his voice sounds like the wicked witch of the west and he flaps his hands like a girl when he talks?

Get Real
"Fred Thompson's rejection of a Constitutional amendment to ban abortion: In the name of Federalism, Fred Thompson rejected a Constitutional amendment to ban abortion on Meet the Press."

Some of us still believe in Federalism and the concept. Just goes to show what is wrong with people like you and other Republican mouthpieces. Yeah lets force California to live like Mississippi. Also the mere prospect is so quixotic that is shows just how much some Republican candidates are willing to pander, they know damn well that this will never happen. We need to reestablish the Republic, to hell with your Federal Democracy.

FRED HAS NO MONEY FOR AIRTIME
POLITICO-When I got a generic fundraising e-mail “from” Fred Thompson campaign manager Bill Lacy last night offering “a quick update” on the effort to get “on the air statewide in Iowa,” I didn’t take it literally.

I should have.

Fred has gone dark in Iowa.

With not enough cash to buy ads, he’s doing all the free media he can on his bus tour. But it’s a remarkable indicator of just how topsy-turvy the GOP race has been that the man once viewed as the party’s savior cannot even afford to buy TV time in the final days before Iowa.

If Team Thompson does get enough in the kitty, it has the below spot in the can.

McCain
Contrary to Mr. Hawkins' piece, if Sen. McCain does go on to win the GOP nomination he won't lose to a Democrat because of his stand on illegal immigration. Does anyone honestly believe that Clinton, Obama or Edwards, seeking the Hispanic vote, will take a position to the right of McCain? I think McCain is the best shot the Republicans have in a pretty weak field of candidates.
McCain's biggest problem will be if conservatives sit home because of his resistance to the Bush tax cuts, his pandering on global warming, and obviously his lead role in the First-Amendment busting campaign finance "reform." But those deficiencies pale next to the prospect of a President Clinton, President Obama or, gulp, President Edwards.

You may not want to read this.
I don't know the circumstances in which Ron Paul supposedly claimed the U.S. was "responsible" for 9/11, but here are a few facts on the general issue of U.S. policy and Islamic extremism.

1. Historically, the U.S. has always encouraged fundamentalist Islamic fervor during the Cold War as a method to stymie the efforts of the USSR to gain influence in the vital mideast. U.S. policy believed any increase in religious intensity would work against the appeal of "Godless" communism.

2. When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and installed a puppet government, the U.S. funded and equipped Mujahideen warriors in their fight against Soviet occupation...the most obvious example being where we provided Stinger missiles to them. After their experience in Afghanistan, foreign(mostly Arab)Mujahideen returned to their countries of origin and began to foment radical and fundamentalist Islamic fervor, often attacking their national governments. Bin Laden formed Al Qaida from among this group of fundamentalist Mujahideen warriors. So, while we did not "cause" 9/11, our policies definitely aided the movement from which Al Qaida was born. That cannot be denied.

Ron Paul is not so far off the mark.

On the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in the G.W. Bush administration, asserted that the United States was partially responsible for the death of Bhutto and subsequent unrest in Pakistan, due to our encouragement that Bhutto return to Pakistan and pressure Musharraf to "democratize".

Resulting unrest from the assassination, and growing antagonism toward Musharraf, has benefited the radicals...and we cannot say we had no hand in setting into motion the events that now have increased instability, benefiting the terrorists.

Fred Thompson
The only problem with Fred Thomopson is that the Media hates him. He's actually the best candidate to win the POTUS as a real consistent conservative.
The only thing you hear about him is hit pieces, what shoes he's wearing,. disrespecting his wife.
If you look at the issues that are important to conservatives, he's definitely "The Man for the Job"
Ron Paul is a Libertarian, not a Republican or Conservative...so don't go there!

Everyone loves piling on Fred Thompson
There is no doubt that both the drive by media and conservative pundits alike have a vendetta against Fred.

Why Republicans seem to trash the best candidate is beyond me.

Also, Mitt Romney has been caught in numerous "falsehoods". #12 should be at least in the top two. If he lied about what his dad did this what else is he going to lie about?

Fred in '08!

jerabaub
I suggest you read 'The Looming Tower" the islamic fanatics were formenting trouble in the middle east, especially Egypt, since the 50's. We gave the Afghani's assistance during the Soviet occupation but Osama and his group, while there, were not in the fight and were basically seen as a group of fools by the real fighters. It wasn't until afterwards tha OBL decided that it was easier to make the USA the great satan to keep his organization going.

Ron Paul was left out of the article as were Biden, Richards, Dennis K, etc because they are irrelevant. After seeing Ron Paul on Meet the Press, he is so far out of reality it's a waste of time even discussing him.

And Don't Forget..........
Maverick McCain and the Gang of 14 who wanted to control appointments to the S. Court. Huckabee sounds too much like born again Jorge Bush and his daily attempts at faith healing is a large minus. I too have religious faith but if I tossed them at you daily, you wouldn't want me to be around much. Where's a jab or two at the politician from New Yawck? Hawkins you used too much space talking about the Mitt and Fred screwups -- anything you do not like about the two of them? Their actual "positive" track record (if they had one Obama and Hitlery) would be worth more to me than their saying stuff that they shouldn't have said.

gfdiver
Still, I don't think there is any dispute that Al Qaida was formed largely from the remnants of Mujahideen returing from the Afghanistan campaign.

Certainly there was Islam extremism prior to Al Qaida, and Al Qaida was heavily influenced by the writings of Sayyid Qutb, among others. Our policy did turn a "blind eye" to radical Islamism as long as we viewed it as a useful tool to combat the growing menace of Soviet influence in the area. Carter was the exception to this rule, for he helped to undermine a secular shah of Iran, creating the conditions for Islamic radicals to seize an entire nation.

While Ron Paul is my sentimental favorite, he does have some positions that worry me. I now am drifting toward McCain, even as I am opposed to the war. I will not vote for any GOP candidate who "apes" Bush on Iraq. I am only supporting McCain because he knew instinctively, from the beginning, we did not have sufficient troops.

McCain had the judgment and intelligence to realize this. Bush and Rumsfeld didn't. And that's the way it is.

If you are going to do it, do it right. We should have had sufficient troops on hand from the beginning to totally quell any thought of an insurgency.

Fred's a Fool
Fred Thompson's claim that he would not support a Constitutional Amendment on the grounds of federalism shows that Fred doesn't really understand the system under which we live.

A Federal Law making abortion illegal in all 50 states would be a blow against federalism. A Constitutional Amendment, which must be passed by both houses of congress and at least 38 states is federalism in action.

Go back to acting Fred. You do better when someone else writes your lines.

Mr Hawkins is dead wrong ...
... about what Ms Coulter said last year at CPAC and needs to read and/or listen to what she actually said. AND owes Ms Coulter an apology for what he said, she said.

And the lying, looting, doctor and hospital defrauding panty waist / poofter to whom Ms Coulter alluded has $1,400.00, not $400.00 hercuts.

Political blunders
the biggest blunder is the missus clinton not divorcing her sexual predator husband. In one stroke she could have gained all the sympoathy of women while demonstrating her strong feminists creds by standing up to bubba rather than continuing to be his enabler. As a divrced spouse bubba could assault the campaign trail and make the case more effectively that she finally wised up, realized how truly intelligent and gifted she was and got rid of the bubba baggage. Then on the day she is sworn in as potus, she and the now repentant and chastisized bubba could have a joint wedding and inaugeration ceremony

3 "blunders" by Thompson
Obviously, Hawkins is not a fan of Thompson. 3 [non-] blunders listed in the top 12?

How about Rudy? The #2 blunder of this entire campaign (I agree with Hawkins' #1 blunder) is Rudy electing not to campaign in Iowa. How is going on Leno instead of debating in a stupid dog and pony show in NH worse than Rudy opting out of the early states?

And I agree with Lev, while I am strongly pro-life, Fred's position is completely consistent with his conservative bona fides.

"Blunders" are, by definition, mistakes, not making a policy statement.

Here are my top 4 blunders:

1. Mrs. Lenin's driver's license debacle.
2. Rudy opting out of the early states.
3. Huck's statement (not the one about Jesus and Lucifer being brothers-that's an honest question, but rather his apology to Mormons for asking the rhetorical question in the first place.) Which leads me to the #4 blunder...
4. Romney implying that Mormonism is Christian. This is deeply offensive to actual Christians. LDS doctrine is, by J. Smith's own words, a re-visioning of Christianity, thousands of changes made to the Bible (including over 85 made to the Book of Revelation). The fact remains that Smith's version of Christianity was not what Paul, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Timothy, Peter, Jude, James, and Jesus taught. These men established what TRUE Christianity is and for Romney to liken his beliefs to what these men taught is a HUGE blunder.

BTW, I will vote for Mitt if he is elected because he is much more qualified to be president than any of the Dems but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Presidential contests are almost always about voting for the lesser of two evils.

(Unless we nominate Thompson/Watts in '08)

Fred Thompson has...
...never met a decision that he could make.I understand he has called a press conference for 7 November,2008,to announce whether he will run for the presidency.

Stay tuned.

Only Giuliani
has the national name recognition, actual executive experience of saving a dying city both financially and culturally, and established fiscal conservative credentials.

Maybe missing the early primaries is a mistake, but Iowa and N. Hampshire have become dog and pony shows for the media and don't really affect the average voter.

Reps./GOP need someone to stop military humiliation at the hands of Dems. , any more lib. nitwit judge appointments, the unscientific global warming agenda, the homosexual agenda, the anti-religious agenda, the end of Bush tax cut reality, nationalization of healthcare, and the weakening of foreign policy to fight terrorism.

I read ben Laden is about to release another tape. I hope so. Maybe it will remind people a president is about being commander in chief and conducting foreign relations and not some nanny-daddy promising a McMansion in every pot and free college education for all.

Happy New Year.

@Renny
I wish I shared your optimism re Rudy. However, my perspective is that he is the one candidate we have that can lose to Mrs. Lenin.

Consider the infamous Clinton, Inc. Politics of Personal Destruction™. HRC has enough baggage that she will have problems going after most of our candidates in the traditional Clinton fashion; it would be just too blatantly hypocritical. But when it comes to Rudy, she can sling mud like the pro she is, and it will stick. She can go after Rudy on so many levels it will make your head spin. The NYC mayor is a disaster waiting to happen, both in his personal life and in his social ideology.

Finally, while I might vote for him if I have to, many social conservatives will not. All it will take is for 1% of the conservative base who voted for Bush in Florida or Ohio in '04 to stay home in order for Mrs. Lenin to win the White House. If ONLY 1% of the social conservative base stays home next November rather than vote for Rudy, I will be surprised. I think it will be more like 5%. That means a landslide for HRC and a lock for a Dem congress.

Just say no to Rudy.

Thompson/Watts in '08

On Fred

I concur that Fred most likely blew it by not jumping in the race on the 4th of July like it was rumored he would.

The rest of the column is spot on. Let's see whether it makes a difference to the voters and whether or not the nominees of both parties exploit the *big mistakes* of the other.

Let's hope the Rep nominee, whoever it is, doesn't decide to *play nice*.

Fred's "mistakes"?
I can see the getting in too late as a mistake, but the amendment issue is clearly not. His position is more conservative than actually supporting the ban. He wants the PEOPLE to decide this issue, not the elites. I think that is the right thing. I think the Leno thing was actually a good idea. He was seen by 6 million people versus the 6 that watched that debate.
I also can't understand why no one is on board with Fred. The ONLY real issues conservatives have had with him is that he got in late. That's it. They have not attacked any positions. What's the problem with Fred? Why can't he get any traction?

Rudy is tenacious and ambitious
He has the smarts of a dedicated prosecutor and surely knows Clinton from NY as well as any adversary.

He won twice in a city that has 3-1 Dem. reg. by drawing Dem. crossover votes and independent votes. Remember, today up to 40% of the electorate is considered ind. and does not vote in non-open primaries. (Reagan won landslides due to Dem. votes.)

Some pundits have predicted Giuliani could bring back NY, NJ, PA, CA, and New England into GOP eletoral columns and leave the worries about OH behind.

I don't believe the MidWest and South would suddenly vote Dem. if Giuliani is the Rep. choice. Pair him with Thompson or, I hate to say it, Huckabee for a NE-Southern balance, if that counts anymore.

The alt. is a Dem. sweep with 60-70 Dem. senators, military capitulation in the Mid East, the entire lib. soc. agenda (homosexual agenda, global warming agenda, healthcare agenda), higher taxation, and with housing and energy, a prob. recession and ec. a la Catter: high inflation, high interest, high unemployment, and foreign debacles.

JERABAUB

.....I agree that the Bush Administration has to take some responsibility for Bhutto's assassination ...

.....They knew she would be a moving target and they should have provided her with security and protection ...

.....She knew the danger and took the risk ...it's a shame ...she was a brave lady .....COLOSSUS

Have to disagree some more Renny
The alt. is not a Dem sweep. The alternative is to not nominate Rudy in the first place. It is a risk we cannot take. The question you're begging is whether Rudy can make up for all of the lost social conservative votes by getting crossover votes. Personally, I think that is a huge if.

We don't need center left votes to win. We need ALL of the fiscal. defense, and social conservative vote to win. Period.

This means we need Thompson or Hunter. Of the two, Thompson is going to have wider appeal to center/right moderates and either will appeal to fiscal, social, and defense conservatives.

Rudy is a loser for us, IMHO.

Bhutto had an offer
of power sharing that she refused. I'm sure she had her ethical reasons, but a deal might have given her greater official protection.

She surely knew the terrible circumstances she faced as an ind. candidate.

Assassination is a short-circuiting of the electoral process, a way to overturn majority will or stop the process before the election.

I think we should take from this horror that Pakistan and most of the region is destablized by Yassir Arafat's invention of the suicide bomber that Islam seems to have embraced. Our presence there will not be short term.

baseballdoc
While I am no fan of the Bush on a number of issues, especially Iraq and how it was (mis)handled, I included that remark about U.S. possible partial culpability on Bhutto primarily because it was offered by none other than Bush's former U.N representative John Bolton, whom I had always assumed was a diehard Bush loyalist on foreign policy, including its commitment to "democracy" in muslim nations(his comments on North Korean discussions with Bush administration notwithstanding)..

Bolton seems to be saying, "wait a minute". Security must trump democracy.

I happen to agree with Bolton on that specific issue. Bush's seemingly utopian belief that democracy will usher in moderate regimes in Pakistan and elsewhere may not be valid, absent some cultural proclivity among muslims to embrace tolerance and respect the beliefs of others.

In the final analysis, however, no one forced Benazir Bhutto to return to Pakistan. She did so on her own free will.

It is a shame what happened. She would have been a benign influence for moderation and tolerance there.

This may not be politically correct but

here goes. Joe Biden was on TV this morning babbling about how Bhutto was complaining to HIM ( cuz he's special ) that she needed better protection like amored vehicles and such. Can someone explain to me what kind of armored vehicle can protect an ego maniac who insists on standing up through the sunroof waving to the crowd?! I saw her on the tube a few weeks ago pulling that stunt and said to myself "That will be the demise of her". It was painfully obvious.

Puhleeeze. She was living on borrowed time because she HAD NO COMMON SENSE.

ex-Wyomingite
I agree with you that alot of the antagonism from Al Qaida toward the west can be traced back to the loss of the caliphate with the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of WW1.

I believe bin Laden even specifically refers to that "travesty" in at least one of his previous tapes to the west.

I doubt bin Laden is a fan of Ataturk.

Thompson/Hunter 08
I cannot a picture of Giuliani in a dress and makeup floating around the Muslim countries, drawing any kind of respect, nor fear. Certainly doesn't give me any respect for him.RINO

McCain is for amnesty. that is a danger to our security, and our stability financially.RINO

Huckabee is a real stand up comedian, using Christ as a Straight Man. Has no idea on how to run a country. Has bedn weak on almost everything important to conservatives.DEMOCRAT

Ron Paul??? PULEEASE!!

Hunter. Great. A conservative, a vet. with two sons in the armed services. A fence builder. A protector of Americans.

Fred Thompson. As experienced as McCain in foreign affairs. A true conservative. A good plan on illegal aliens, a good plan on Social Security, A good plan on foreign policy. A good plan on everything!!!

nanna
even as stupid as these islamists are they understand that once we elect a president and he has control over the most powerful military in the world they had best access the situation first. Why else do the islamists prefer election of the dims. They know these cowards will never stand up for america and defend it. Rudy has taken stands opposing the islamists. They probably aren't laughing at the possibility he might get elected

DIPLOMACY BY COLOSSUS

.....After Osama fled into Western Pakistan Musharraf would have been given six months to turn him over ...failing that the entire area would have been turned into green glass and made uninhabitable for a thousand years ...

.....Then Musharraf would have been given six months to stabilize his government ...failing that ...Pakistans nuclear facilities would have been taken out ...Musharraf taken out and Bhutto installed as Prime Minister under USA protection ...

One correction
Al Qaida did have ties tot he anti_Soviet insurgency in Afghanistan. However, the specific funding for al Qaida (outside of bin Laden's personal funds) came from the ISS, not the US.

I hear too often how we created al Qaida, but, from what I have read, it appears that the funding was very compartmentalized and that al Qaida in particular was among the groups supported by Pakistan's ISS, not the US.

Some good quotes form primary sources are at:

http://www.911myths.com/html/bin_ladin_links_to_the_cia.htm l

(Actually 911myths.com is a good source for quotes in general. And it is hard for truthers to refute, as they rely on primary soruces.)

Oops
ISI, not ISS. ISS is a computer security company (and SSI was a computer game company). I always manage to confuse abbreviations/acronyms. I used to tell interviewers and supervisors not to throw those TLAs (Three-letter acronyms) and LFLAs (Longer Four Letter Acronyms) at me, as I couldn't remember what they meant. It is a bad trait for someone working with computers, as TLAs seem to delight programmers to no end.

So, please read ISI for ISS in my comment above.

Romney made a mistake?
I think you, along with others who do not have a good grasp on the English language, are reaching to list Romney's reference as a mistake. For instance, I regularly tell people that we as a society saw that Hitler murdered 6 million Jews, when in fact "we" never did see it. If Romney's father did march with MLK, he is entitled to tell people about it without others gasping and frothing at the mouth because he had the temerity to use language beyond the grasp of a third-grade elementary student.

This semantical gotcha game is ridiculous. Moreover, it highlights how strong a candidate Romney is when that is the best complaint you can come up with.

ChuckP
I see what you are arguing, and I agree.

(Note: I both literally "saw" the text, and I also figuratively "saw" the point of the argument. Just thought I should point that out as some seem to miss figurative language.)

Actually, I think that is a pretty weak contender for a campaign goof. Especially when Hawkins doesn't even mention the ultimate faux pas of sending Bill Clinton out on the campaign trail for Hillary, or the promise of sending Bush I out to bash Bush II to the world, or any of 100 other bigger gaffes.

Actually Justpaul
I think perhaps Thompson meant that while a constitutional amendment banning abortion would be per se constititutional (you're correct), that he thinks states should decide these things themselves. So he means federalism as the idea that the feds only do things that they must, and not get involved in these matters. It may or may not be technically correct, but that seems to be his point, since surely he knows that if you pass an amendment on ANYTHING, it becomes legal.

justpaul and Nam65-66
justpaul: It didn't take me long to think of 13 states that would vote against ratification of an abortion-banning amendment, and that's all it takes to stop it cold. So, if I understand you correctly, we should all pile onto a plan that is certain to fail, leaving abortion-on-demand the law in all 50 states.

Nam: that is now an old and tired joke, and nobody but you is laughing.

Everyone wants the candidate who is 110% in favor of his single issue, and the result of that is that we might miss getting the candidate who is at least 90% in favor of everyone's single-issues. And then we lose in November. Won't that be fun... again?

Fred Thompson. http://www.fred08.com

Perhaps Thompson's mistake
of "getting in too late" could be turned to an asset.

If everybody who thinks this whole procces is starting waaaay too early could be persuaded to back him, it would probably be enough to give Thompson the nomination. That would hopefully convince the political operatives that the pushing up of the campaigns is ultimately a waste of money, and we might get a return to a more normal schedule. Otherwise, it's not hard to imagine the campaign for the next presidential election starting about two weeks prior to the upcoming presidential inauguration!

I've heard worse reasons for supporting a candidate.

Setting the record straight
U.S. wanted to maintain it was not "directly involved" with trying to overthrow the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, so it funneled U.S. funds to Pakistan's Intelligence Service, which then used those funds to support forces fighting against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

And the radicals, the most "Islamist" of those groups fighting the Soviets, got most of those funds via the Pakistan Intel service, BUT the funds still originated in the U.S.

I think we know where the allegiance of many, if not most, members of Pakistan's Intel service rests today, and is sure as hell is not with the U.S. or Musharraf.

So some can try to claim we had no direct involvement in how those U.S. funds were spent, but that is a less than honorable position.

But if it makes them feel better, go for it.

We knew damn well where most of those funds ended up.

I do agree that Bin Laden created Al Qaida about the time, or within a few years after, non-Afghan, primarily Arab, mujahideen had left Afghanistan, returning to their respective homelands, where they began to agitate for strict Islamic law.

abortion
I am not looking for Roe v Wade to be overturned because it would put us back to the time of back alley abortions where each one was a twofer - the fetus died and the mother died.
I would rather see an end to the cause of abortion - unplanned pregnancy.
Start with the abstinence oath, then let's give the providers of birth control an incentive to provide more kinds of more-effective, longer-lasting types of contraceptives.
Your daughter took the abstinence oath -wonderful. What if some guy didn't care about her oath and her saying, "NO"? Do you want her to be condemned to pregnancy because you kept her from getting that contraceptive injection that would protect her for 3 months?

Jerabaub
The quotes I cited do not support what you say above. As they come form people who directly researched this or were involved, I have no reason to doubt them without any evidence to the contrary being presented. (Not just assertions, or links to other people making assertions without any foundation, but actual first hand reports or documents.)

Sorry, but there is little evidence that the CIA funded bin Laden either through the ISI or directly.

A Mountain Out Of A Mole Hill
How many mistakes did you make in this short piece, let alone a 20 Min. speech.

This is speaking metaphorically

Mitt will live through this and I will to, but I sure wont trust that you write as much as when we write with good will and respect for the persons we affect.

How did Mitt’s statement harm or hinder another person. It did not hinter anyone. By the ambitious, self-serving MSM and pundits needed to try destroy someone who represents values and standards that don’t measure up to. Evil and its best seeking to destroy all that is good.

"At one point, Huckabee’s party turned toward a cluster of reporters and cameramen and, when they kicked up a pheasant, fired shotgun blasts over the group’s heads.
This, friends, is dangerously bad hunting form.
if any of our hunting mates had pulled a stunt like Huckabee’s yesterday, we never would have invited them back. It’s the sort of behavior that drives safety-conscious hunters up the wall, because it reinforces a reckless, gun-totin’ stereotype.

My colleague James Oliphant reports that Huckabee’s party was about 75 yards away from the press corps Wednesday when a pheasant jumped up and flew toward the reporters, drawing several shots. “That was too close,” he reports a cameraman saying.

Perhaps Huckabee missed hunter’s safety classes – Arkansas only requires them for hunters born after 1968 – but the etiquette on this point is clear.

“Never point a firearm at yourself or others,” the International Hunter Education Association declares in its Basic Safety Rules. Later, it adds, “Never point your firearm at something you do not intend to shoot. Make sure you positively identify what you are shooting at and know what lies in front of and beyond it.”http://weblogs.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/blog/2007/12/huckabees_muzzle_control_probl.html

I merely said that our nation provided assistance to the Mujahideen in their fight against the Soviets.

Most of this was funneled thru Pakistan's Intel service.

Pakistan chose which groups received this assistance, but my point was that our funding assisted the Mujahideen, and SOME remnants of the Mujahideen were later developed by bin Laden into Al Qaida.

As you know, Al Qaida was not on anyone's radar screen, since it was yet to be formed, but radical Islamists certainly were...given the context of the times when airplane hijackings were common, and with the Iranian Islamic state being formed.

MC CAIN RECANTED ON AMNESTY
While I enjoyed this article--esp. the humorous "conversations" people had in the wake of the Coulter-Edwards flap, I think the author's remarks on McCain are irresponsible.

It is or should be by now widely known that McCain has acknowledged that his support of "comprehensive reform" was a mistake. He has firmly stated that he "gets it" that the American people do not currently trust the federal government to secure/enforce the border and that this needs to be the top priority in addressing the illegal immigration crisis.

As someone posted earlier McCain's biggest challenge as the nominee would be those on the right who refuse to vote for him in the general election despite the fact that they would throw it to whichever Dem is nominated.

That would be no only irresponsible but downright reprehensible in my view.

Nanna, I'm with you
A Thompson/Hunter ticket would be just fine with me. In fact, couldn't be better. This would represent true conservative thinking with two candidates who are definitely electable.

I have suspected for many months that both mainstream media as well as the multitude of posters here at TH do not in any way represent the voting public of America. It's only a hunch but I suspect that Fred is very well thought of and that many will vote for him in primaries.

What Fred lacks is: 1) Mitt Romney's clean-cut "presidential" looks; 2) Mayor Giuliani's extremely public and admirable record during a time of national crisis; 3) Senator McCain's war record and/or congressional record; 4) Mike Huckabee's incessant religious pandering.

Clearly John Hawkins is no friend of Fred's. But I think Senator Thompson represents the best of conservative, small-government, states-rights thinking. Fred along with Duncan Hunter would be top flight, and he will probably get my primary vote (if he is still in the race by the time I get to cast a primary vote).

Edwards and Obama
It's a matter of ideological perspective I suppose to make a list like this, but John is using Obama's 'refusal' to wear a flag pin as a blunder? Really?? Oddly, if John were to ask, I'm willing to bet that the majority of voters would find this a non-starter. Frankly, Johnny, we're sick to death with your party's need to tout patriotism as a cover for fascist-style nationalism.

As far as Edwards/Coulter 'flap' goes, this is just another screwy misread of mainstream American sentiment. We dislike Ann with a passion, Hawkins. She is a mean, racist sociopath who happens to get paid to write hate-filled rants that appeal to a certain hypocritical and mean base. Edwards rightly countered her disgusting remarks with a reasoned response, and his wife Elizabeth spoke with grace and eloquence to Coulter's nasty spew. No contest, the beast that is Ann was revealed to a greater audience for what she is. Score a big one for Edwards. (But I can see why Hawkins WOULD try to spin this one.)

Again with the Edwards haircut. A party that hangs it hat with oil Slick Mittflip should never cast aspersions on anyone else's grooming habits. Speaking of which, it might serve Thompson well to look a little less.... um....earthy.

Martel...
...you are correct,I am laughing at Thompson because he is laughable as a presidential candidate.I am not the only one as his standings in the polls indicate. He'll be out of there by 5 February.Good ridence.

Clinton’s “don’t ask” policy
Has Hillary lost Iowa?

LATIMES-As she races through Iowa in the days before next week’s caucuses, Hillary Clinton is taking few chances. She tells crowds that it’s their turn to “pick a president,’’ but over the last two days she has not invited them to ask her any questions.

Before the brief Christmas break, the New York senator had been setting aside time after campaign speeches to hear from the audience. Now when she’s done speaking, her theme songs blare from loudspeakers, preventing any kind of public Q&A.

She was no more inviting when a television reporter approached her after a rally on Thursday and asked if she was “moved’’ by Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. Clinton turned away without answering.

@Nam65-66
Not that I care what you "think" as expressed in your most recent fact-free post but do us all a favor; visualize spaces after punctuation marks. Thanks.

The biggest mistake..
Was her campaign approving BJ Clinton's stumping
for her. Her numbers started to fall after his first speech. He is unable to support ANYONE except himself. His lack of sincerity is painfully apparent and nobody's buying the twofer
thing AGAIN. She is an incredible weak campaigner
lacking the smallest amount of sincerity or
empathy. She feels NO ONES pain, believe me; nor
could she. Thankfully, she needs a miracle, and
she burned that bridge long ago.

How Can You Leave Rudy Off?
I don't know if Hawkins is a Rudy fan, but how can you leave him off the list for his infamous comment about spending as much time at Ground Zero as the rescue workers?

City records indicate that Rudy spent 29 hours at Ground Zero between Sept. 17 and Dec. 17, 2001 (mostly photo opps). By contrast, he spent over 40 hours at Yankee Stadium for the playoffs and World Series in 2001.

The primary connection Rudy has with the WOT is that he has shamelessly exploited it and profited from it (both financially and politically).

THOMPSON
He, Thompson, is our best hope and is doing well in Iowa. This man understands what the public expects in regards to immigration.

Mr Beeblebrox...
...will that reflect on my final grade? My Dad will kill me.

Mr Beeblebrox...
...will that reflect on my final grade? My Dad will kill me.

The single biggest blunder...
...being made in this campaign is that many conservatives are allowing the lib media to eliminate the conservative candidates for us with their phony polls.

The two best men for this job are Hunter and Thompson. I have heard very few criticisms of Thompson that are based on him lacking conservative credentials and no such criticisms of Hunter. The only complaint I've heard about Hunter is that he can't win. In fact, Mark Belling, subbing for Rush, spent about twenty minutes saying that today.

This is the same old crap we've been getting from the lib media for years. In 1998 they saved Clinton's butt with a push poll showing 60% approval the day after the results of the DNA tests were made public. In 2004 one of them bragged that their support was worth 15 percentage points to John Kerry in a race that was eventually decided by less than 4 percentage points. After Bush beat Kerry anyway, and had nominated a balanced slate of judges, the only conservative nominees to get a vote in the Senate were Roberts and Alito because the the lib media seduced McCain to lead a handful of other RINOs in stabbing Bill Frist and the rest us in the back.

The time has long since passed that conservatives should have begun scoffing at any and all alleged "polls" publicized by the liberal media. These polls are just like the the Voter News Service info that almost threw the 2000 election to Gore instead of Bush, and like the phony exit polls that allegedly showed Kerry winning early in the day in 2004.

These polls are not accurate because they aren't conducted to be accurate. They are conducted to discourage conservatives.

Don't let them get away with these lies. Tancredo has dropped out. That leaves Thompson and Hunter. Vote for one or the other. It's time for us conservatives to tell the lib media who we like instead of them presuming to tell us.

Skipping the "black" debate
Personally, I think one of the big blunders of this election was the virtual boycott by Romney, Giuliani, McCain, and Thompson of the All American Presidential Forum, the black and hispanic debate (not to be confused with the spanish debate -- that was a disaster for other reasons).

http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/special/forums/

Anyone who watched this realizes that it was actually a very well done and informative format, and it was an excellent opportunity to speak to the minority votes and address their concerns. By having all of the front-runners skip out on this well organized and supported debate, we are further distancing our party from the black vote.

If Huckabee, Paul, or Hunter (who all attended that debate) should manage to win the nomination, they may just need the black support from that debate to win against the democrats. For the others, they will likely not get that support as the slight may not be quickly forgiven.

Rudy Is the Real Deal
Granted, Thompson says the right things and seems to be staunchly conservative--BUT he doesn't have the fire in the belly needed to master a rigorous campaign and beat the Clinton campaign machine. Rudy, on the other hand, is a vigorous campaigner with a resume of courage under fire unequalled by any of the other Republican candidates. Giuliani proved himself a forceful leader when he turned a liberal, corrupt, dangerous NYC around and made it work. Granted, based on his record in NYC he is strong medicine and controversial and will create many enemies--but he gets the job done.
That's my kind of leader. That's the kind of leader America needs in these perilous times.

wiseone
While I strongly agree with your post, I think you really should consider adding Ron Paul to the list of conservatives. While you may disagree with his views on Iraq, his fiscal and social positions are very conservative.

For conservative voters, there are three choices in this campaign: Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, and Ron Paul. Sadly, Hunter's campaign may never get off the ground. I have not heard much talk about him at all outside of Townhall. Thompson's latest surge may be too little too late, but a strong finish in Iowa could turn that around. Ron Paul has a lot of momentum behind him going into Iowa. It may be that he emerges as the only choice for conservatives following Iowa and New Hampshire.

Smitty
There is a lot in what you say, but i just may have voted against someone for the last time, and that would be the only reason to vote "for" McCain. No more RINOs. If we are headed left, i want there to be a D after the leaders name.

GPSguns
There is no known GPS system that can not be disabled. You give me a weapon that includes a GPS track system and it will not be trackable long. Moreover, smuggling and illegal items are as ancient and as common as dirt. Everyone in the world who has a few hundred dollars and the yen, can buy illegal drugs, illegal firearms, or illegal border entry. Utopian schemes that ignore reality and human nature/ingenuity are doomed to fail.

Buying Stuff
Canada goes through spasms of trying to raise the taxes on cigarettes to the swooning point (to pay off their relatives and cronies basically) and when they do, the Border Patrol admits, every housewife in Canada becomes a smuggler. For this reason on the weekend after September 11, 2001 when my sister and I were returning to Canada from the USA, the only question we were asked was whether we were bringing in any cigarettes. In fact, this last week when I returned to Canada, although the cross-border traffic is up 25% over last year due to the rising dollar, the only questions we get are whether we are carrying cigarettes and alcohol. You can buy smuggled cigarettes anywhere you see a sign that says American Cigarettes, and everybody knows it.

So if it is that easy to smuggle cigarettes, when the border guys are looking for nothing else, how easy can it be to smuggle in everything else from BMWs to RPGs? In a country where guns are demonized, the murder rate is rising every week because the criminals from the USA know we cannot shoot back. Until, that is, we get a smuggled gun.

Ron Paul does everything right!
Ron Paul isn't included because he is running on all the right issues: individual freedom, limited government, getting rid of the communist income tax, returning to honest money, a foreign policy of freedom. His support has grown astromically, and has broken records raising money from individual donors.
Go Ron Paul!!!

To renny
We have had assassinations in this country too. We had a rash of them in the 1960's and it was social liberals who got killed. It's worth thinking about whether, if nominated or elected, Hillary Clinton might be a target (a woman, a liberal) or Barack Obama might be a target (a black man, a liberal). The people who hate them most are also the most gun-happy Americans.

THOMPSON doesn't want to peak too soon
I like Thompson, but, like many posters, I think he may have made some mistakes in when he would join the fray and how he would make himself visible through the fog of the campaign.

That said, I wonder (and this might be pure wishful thinking) as we watch other repubs surge and retreat,(e.g. Huckabee up now, probably down in a few weeks), whether Fred will be sort of the "last man standing".

Typical of the criticism of Thompson is the abortion amendment business. My read on this is that he truly believes that the Supreme Court had no business either making abortion legal or illegal. This is a legislative matter. Best left to the states. Let the politicians show their mettle. I am pro life, but believe that it is the job of the legislatures to deal with this issue and take the heat.

The main problem I had with Thompson before moving toward him was that as a legislator he did not have the executive experience. These concerns were put aside when he went on Russert and was so direct with his answers: Thompson has the horsepower to be an executive. He is my man, but, I will support any nominee against H. Clinton.

Romney's mistake' at number two? WHAT?
When I look back over the problems of this campaign, I see many serious mistakes that have been made. Romney's statement that he 'saw' his father march with Martin Luther King doesn't even come close to the level of many other mistakes made by various candidates. His explanation was very understandable, and to compare it with Clinton shows your obvious bias. Then to top it off you bring in a comment reported 30 years ago, long before he was a public figure. A comment that could have easily been misquoted. This was a media driven flap. The media is desperate to find dirt on Romney and so frustrated that they have to create it out of whole cloth - even to the point of skipping the obvious truth of the Romney families historic fight for civil rights.

It would seem to me that if Romney really had made a mistake that qualified for 2nd place, he would be much lower in the polls. A 2nd place mistake would probably have destroyed his campaign since he had so little national recognition.

I think the biggest republican mistakes have been - Rudi skipping the early states, Thompson coming in so late, and Huckabee's combination of his terrible foreign policy article, attacking Rush Limbaugh, and gaffe after gaffe after gaffe.

I am adding one more to my list
Adding to my post above -- Thompson's laziness should be one the list too. There were already so many stories about how lazy he was, and how he didn't like working in government, that it was really important for him to get out there and set the world on fire, thus proving that he has what it takes to do the very challenging job of President. Instead his performance as a candidate is pitiful. Stacked up to some of the other candidates he looks like he doesn't really want the job. Which I don't think he does. Maybe his wife wants it. I don't know, but we need someone with energy and strength to get out there and fight for the job. His conservative credentials may attract a lot of people and the persona he carries with him from his acting role may attract others, but they need to wake up and recognize the sillines of voting for someone that is soooooo laid back that he can hardly make it out to hit a couple of campaign events a week.

Oops 11 not 2
I just reread the article and realized the Romney is at 11 not 2. My mistake. Apparently I have a blooper that would qualify me for this list. My point is that Romney's doesn't even belong on this list.

For Khomar
There is little doubt that Paul is conservative. But I have a fundamental disagreement with Paul on his strategy for dealing with terrorism and cannot support him because of that.

Rudy Is the Real Deal?
Guiliani is by far the least ethical of any candidate of either party. From his soap opera personal life to shamelessly hyping 9-11 and the war on terror for his own personal gain (financially and politically), he is a human cesspool.

His firm's (Giuliani Partners) partners have included his ex-police commissioner Bernie Kerik (who is going to jail), a former FBI official who took Ground Zero momentos for his own personal gain and an ex-priest accused of being a pedeophile. His clients include a former (admitted) cocaine smuggler and a member of Middle East royalty with ties to terrorism.

Rudy consistently tries to shift blame to others (e.g. saying on FNC that a subordinate made the decision to locate the city's Energency Preparedness Center in the World Trade Center only to have Chris Wallace produce a 1996 memo from that subordinate recommending the center be located in Brooklyn and stating that having it in lower Manhattan exposed it to terrorist risks).

Rudy is a real deal alright - a real fraud. Forget the hype. Learn as much about Rudy as you can. The better you know Rudy, the less likely you will vote for him.

Ilee
Fred thompson is out ther husting. But the media doesn't cover it.
Huckabee gets coverage constantly. Look at the Christmas ad it was hundreds of hours of free air time.

Thompson has been on the road constantly, and still is. But when it comes to his coverage, you can almost hear crickets chirping.

Liberal media is scared of Thompson. They know he can make quick work of any of their candidates. He gets endorsement after endorsement, and it's not reported, or is reported in passing. It's all Huckabee, romney, and now McCain getting shoved down our throats.

The rinos are getting all the coverage, and the true conservatives are being ignored. this should be a loud and clear message.

Thompson/Hunter08

Perfection not required but...
competency is! Where is the sense of what binds us as American citizens? I used to believe that the majority of us had the same goals and priorities. Not so, as is so well indicated in these threads at TH.

Living life and doing no harm has gotten us into these many messes. All of us average, everyday Americans, trusting the powers that be to act in our best interest while we go about the business of making a living and raising our families has brought us the power hungry, centralized Federal bureaucracy we see today.

Do we not have a right to expect results when our hard earned livings are diminished for the sake of increasing power at the Federal level?

Does anyone see that over regulation of our private lives, lack of regulation for the sake of national security and downright inefficiency by any and all government bureaucrats hasn't ended poverty, drug abuse, child abuse, etc.

At our local Senior Citizens Center, the director has had to give up her own salary in order to keep them in compliance with the new minimum wage standards for employees.

This center is vital in this rural community where most of the citizens are seniors. By increasing the minimum wage the Federal Government has hurt more people than it has helped and in this case may close down this center leaving the 2 paid employees unemployed.

This in an area where jobs are already scarce and the vast majority of the community's citizens will be without a place to get a good meal at a reasonable price in a warm place of fellowship and friendship.

Just one example of how government enriches our lives and makes life better, NOT!

Farmers Wife
Good morning, have missed you. Was wondering how the winter storm had treated you.

Ron: a modest proposal
Yeah, backalley abortion argument.

Well, I do you one better. Seeing murder as a heinous crime is a throwback to the primitive notions of Genesis 9. Let's get really secular and build big, concrete arenas in all urban areas which gangs can book and shoot it out with each other over the wrong shoes some teen is wearing. It will get violent teens permanently out of circulation. Perhaps we can make these arenas pay for themselves by using the corpses left after the gang contests to make sausage.

What we need is a candidate who supports our not-a-living-document Constitution as fervently as Ron Paul but who does not make his blunder of forgetting that a primary reason for forming this country was "to provide for the common defense." http://www.poorgrandchildren.com

Grown-ups

There are only three Republicans ready-for-prime time "grown-ups" in the race: Rudy, Mitt, and Fred. Period.

The others have excellent points to make, but they do not spark.

Thompson/Romney vs. "whoever" is a winning ticket.

The Nation the world wishes to respect!
Is this election contributing to such, plus while its evermore inhumane and horrendous war machinery is out there at gun point threatening every other nation to bow low or else? One can only wonder as to these words spoken so long ago:"Overgrown military establishments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty and are to be regarded as particualarly hostile to Republican liberty"."It should be the highest ambition of every American to extend his views beyond himself, and to bear in mind that his conduct will not only affect himself, his country, and his immediate posterity; but that its influcnece may be co-extensive with the world, and stamp political happiness or misery on ages yet unborn". Question: Can anybody anymore really tell where America's borders are? How about what it means to be a legal citizen of America means anymore? What does is really mean: This is the land of law and order? How about what it means to be the nation in full respect to human life while America is already the mass grave of 40 - 50+ millions of unborn babies and while the butcher shops continue in business and even protected by the laws, the USA President pledges to uphold and enforce each time a new President is sworn in? Yes, how many did Saddam kill of his own as opposed to Americas own killing of its absolute and complete innocent ones? How many Jews did Hitler kill? Should America still ask God to bless America? Yes or NO? One hears that more Americans by far, believe that America is on the wrong track!

BEETLEBROX writes
"Romney implying that Mormonism is Christian. This is deeply offensive to actual Christians."

Perhaps. But by the same token "actual Christians" saying that Mormons are not Christians is deeply offensive.

"The fact remains that Smith's version of Christianity was not what Paul, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Timothy, Peter, Jude, James, and Jesus taught."

This is not a fact but a falsehood. Actually the LDS Church is much closer to the original Christian Church. The doctrine of the Trinity, for instance, is not found in the New Testament.

"LDS doctrine is, by J. Smith's own words, a re-visioning of Christianity, thousands of changes made to the Bible (including over 85 made to the Book of Revelation)."

Interesting assertions, can you back them up? And while you're at it maybe you can explain the explain differences between the various translations of the Old and New Testaments. And while your at it maybe you could explain the "thousands" of contradictions that occur in the Old and New Testaments. (Well, maybe not thousands, but certainly many.)

Religion....also Thompson
Reacting to a recent comment on here....MORMONS BELIEVE THAT CHANGING THE BIBLE IS OK- THEY ADD TO IT AND THEY DELETE FROM IT. Read the end of the Bible and you will see that this is forbidden. AND THEY SAY THEY ARE CHRISTIAN. Give me a break. However, they are free to believe what they want. Just do not ask them to obey the words in the entire Bible. Also a Thompson/Romney ticket may be a winner but I prefer Thompson/Hunter. D.

The phoney "mormon question"
The guy conducting the interview was an expert on the Mormon Religion and the author of a couple of books on the subject. He asked Huckleberry a number of questions about Mormonism and there was a lengthy discussion. Then, he edited all of that out and made it look like Huckleberry asked that question out of the blue. That aside the question isn't all that strange. The LDS church has since edited their site (TWICE) where the question of the relationship between Lucifer and Jesus was discussed, but the answer is either Yes, or No they are only half brothers, or something along those lines. The first revision of the FAQ on "lucifer" aka satan and Jesus was a vague sort of well, we are all God's children in a sense.... Then even that was removed. There are many bizarre points of Mormon theology including the existance of a Mrs. God -- God's wife. If he had asked don't they believe God is married to a Mrs. God many people would think THAT was a smear, but it's true.

McCain didn't support "amnesty"
I disagree with McCain on a number of issues, but the phoney crap of radio people screaming amnesty to increase their listener numbers about the immigration reform bill isn't one of them. It wasn't an amnesty bill. Reagan gave amnesty to 20 million illegals and the same radio people can't stop worshiping him. The bill, among other things, changed the penalty for hiring illegals from a small fine for failing to keep proper paperwork to JAIL TIME FOR EMPLOYERS. If you think that wouldn't make a diff, you ain't thinking. Also, people who are deported and re-enter get PRISON TIME. No one, repeat no one, get amnesty. Yes, there is an eventual path to citizenship for many people with no criminal record other than illegal entry but that would take many years, paying a fine, paying back taxes, etc. Once again, Reagan gave 100 percent free complete amnesty for 20 million illegals. All they had to do was fake a water bill or get someone to say they had lived here before a certain date. Stop worshiping an imaginary Reagan and start trying to solve real problems America has today.

ELITIST MS MEDIA/NEOCONS DESPERATE!!
ESTABLISHMENT IS DESPERATE FOR CANDIDATE
Folks, I never thought I would see the Jacobin/Neocons and their CFR buddies along with their Marxist Liberal Mainstream Media so desperate for a candidate they think will win that they would try to Coronate John McCain.

The Neocon Station...Fox News is so desperate for one of their handpicked candidates to win that they not allow Dr Ron Paul or Duncan Hunter to participate in the New Hampshire Debates.

I am already recommending that Dr Paul include a political ad commercial spot showing Reagan when Mr Green tried to take the microphone away from Reagan. Reagan quipped? Mr Green, I am paying for this microphone. The very same thing is happening to Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter.....when this commercial is run....the establishment will be toast!!

Happy New Year to Fox News!! LOL

Huckabee attack unfair
> Mike Huckabee asked, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?" <

Indeed the LDS does -- or at least they used to.

As boone also noted in his/her post above, LDS used to openly state that, or something very similar to it.

Huckabee is being attacked essentially just for being more knowledgeable than the general public about LDS beliefs.

Btw, my prefered candidate is not Huckabee, because of his leftist views on taxes and immigration, but he is still being treated unfairly.

Ron Paul " No Mistakes"
I was cleaning out my e-mail, I know it is a little late, I notice no mention of Ron Paul, so I guess he didn't make any mistakes.
