Republicans Really Are the Stupid Party

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The "stupid party" moniker has often been applied to the GOP, but seldom has it been more applicable than it is to today's Republican Party.

The Republican politicians, insulated from the real world in D.C., are too timid to take on the Democrats, too arrogant to listen to their constituents, and have an antagonistic attitude towards the grass roots activists who should be their biggest supporters. No matter how big of a screw-up the Democrats make or how outrageous their behavior is, they can also count on their Republican pals across the aisle to meekly cut them a break while simultaneously going out of their way to irritate conservatives.

Despite the fact that the Democrats in Congress currently have a disapproval rating higher than the GOP numbers before the 2006 election, it's hard to imagine the GOP taking back the House or the Senate in 2008 because you can't beat something with nothing -- and that's what the GOP is offering the American people right now, nothing.

One of the GOP's biggest strengths should be foreign policy. And although we're stuck backing an unpopular war in Iraq right now because it's the right thing to do, it would be fair for people to ask what George Bush is doing about North Korea's nukes or Iran's attacks on our soldiers and march towards nuclear weapons. The answer, as far as anyone can tell, appears to be nada.

Meanwhile, we've got Hezbollah setting up shop in South America and hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens pouring across our Southern borders while the Bush Administration is refusing to build the border wall that was signed into law last year. Moreover, the GOP in the Senate is adding to the problem by preparing to sign onto an illegal immigration amnesty bill, written by Ted Kennedy, that will kill them at the polls in 2008.

Even when it comes to spending and small government, the two areas that should form the backbone of the modern Republican Party, we're seeing very little positive action. George Bush has been the biggest spender ever to sit in the White House and although the GOP has improved marginally in fighting wasteful spending since the Democrats took over, they certainly haven't convinced anyone that they have much in common with the 1994 Republican revolutionaries who were responsible for balancing the budget in the Clinton years.

Then there's our Party leadership.

Although George Bush deserves credit for hanging tough in Iraq even though it would be easier to just pull out, he has become isolated from his base, is pushing a wildly unpopular amnesty bill, and he has allowed himself to be a hapless punching bag for the Democrats. Since 2006, watching the Democrats take on George Bush has been about like watching a pack of lions closing in on a herd full of lame antelope. They're going for the kill, the Bushies are desperately running for their lives, and you want to turn your head away rather than look at the slaughter.

Meanwhile, in the House, John Boehner is pushing a Republican with corruption problems, Ken Calvert, onto the Appropriations Committee over the protests of the Rightroots. In the Senate, Mitch McConnell is preparing the way for Ted Kennedy's amnesty bill. At the Republican National Committee, the RNC Chair, Mel Martinez, has been so invisible compared to his talented predecessor, Ken Mehlman, that I wonder if they've been hiding him in some of the "undisclosed locations" that Dick Cheney spent so much time in during 2004. Additionally, earlier this month over at the NRCC, Tom Cole, the guy who is supposed to be leading the charge to help us take back Congress, had this to say about why we got creamed in 2006,

"Oh, I don't think the problem was spending. People who argue that we lost because we weren't true to our base, that's just wrong."

You ever heard of the Peter Principle? It states that, "In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." Well, if you want to see the Peter Principle in action, the GOP's "leaders" in D.C. are as good of an example of it as any.

Now, this is where most people would stop the column because nobody minds battering politicians, but going after some of the rank and file – well, that's going too far. That may be so, but there are a few things that need to be said.

First of all, I'm so sick and tired of people who claim to be "conservatives," but do nothing but incessantly carp about the Republican Party. The GOP does deserve criticism, but if you spend all your time complaining about people who agree with you on 70% of the issues while giving a free pass to liberals who disagree with you on all those same issues and maybe another 60% of the issues besides, you're part of the problem, not part of the solution.

The same goes for people who say they're going to cast a protest vote for the Libertarian Party or Constitution Party. Let me tell you something -- the Libertarian Party and Constitution Party are never going to catch on and the only thing they've ever accomplished was electing liberal Democrats by convincing conservatives to waste their votes. In fact, a person who doesn't vote is smarter than a person who votes for candidates from the Libertarian Party or Constitution Party, because both people wasted their chance to impact who's going to be in power, but the LP or CP voter wasted his time as well by standing in line at the polling place to do it.

Let me also add that we hear a lot of complaining about George Soros, but what people should really be asking is, “Where is the GOP's George Soros?" There are plenty of filthy rich conservatives who want to push the country to the right and are capable of making just as big of an impact as Soros. But, the difference is that Soros puts his money where his mouth is and a lot of wealthy conservatives don't. Don't the Democrats always say we're the party of fatcats? Well, now would be a great time for some of them to get more involved in helping out the conservative grassroots.

Speaking of which, the Democrats are absolutely murdering the GOP in online fund raising. Know why? Because too many people who have built big conservative audiences don't want to do exactly the same kind of fund raising for the GOP that liberal blogs like the Daily Kos do for the Democrats. There are conservative talk show hosts, blogs, and magazines that could generate millions of dollars for Republican candidates they approve of and simultaneously increase their influence in Washington, by raising money for the GOP. That would mean more Republicans in office and more conservative influence over the GOP. From my point of view, that's a win-win for those of us who want to see D.C. pulled to the right. But unfortunately, a lot of these big name conservatives don't want to dirty their hands with fund raising. All I can say to that is that if liberals are willing to do the grunt work but conservatives aren't, then maybe we shouldn't complain so much about their being in power, because obviously they care more about seeing their ideas implemented than a lot of us do.

What it all comes down to is that if we want to help the country by enacting conservative policies in Washington, conservatives are going to have to start acting more like a movement again instead of disparate interest groups squabbling over who's getting the biggest slice of the pie. We need the base to hold the GOP accountable, but support them even though they're far from perfect. We also need more conservative activists who are willing to put in the elbow grease, more wealthy conservatives and conservatives with large audiences that are willing to help with fund raising, and we need to have more Republicans in Washington that place a higher priority on pleasing their biggest supporters than pleasing the New York Times. Until we start to do those things again, conservatives will not be able to recapture the momentum we had during the eighties through the mid-nineties and the potential we have to help this country will be largely wasted.

Clear blue ocean

You are right Mr. Hawkins. The GOP base is being way unreasonable in their criticism of the GOP. I'm quite sure they will come to our rescue when the Snidley Whiplashes in the Democrat party tie us all up on a railroad track.

Michael Medved water boy
Rush admits he carries water for Republicans. Michael Medved is the water boy! Today on his program Michael was defending this immigration deal [piece of trash] saying things like, "As far as my understanding goes..." when he has NO understanding -nobody does! Except key [terrible] points like the FACT that ALL it will do immediately is make them all safe from prosecution - in their person and at work. That is ALL

Bad enough corporate lobbyists gave us trade deals where slaves could produce for us abroad - now also at home. Write to them [Congress] and tell them this goes against our nation and it's principles.. they will stand against it's patriots - as it is [for this] treason

They won't even have to learn English - the flood gates are about to open wide! Many more pockets of areas in our country will be places we English speaking folks won't know the language

Hawkins: Kid, you're just another
apologist for the GOP.

You started out well, and blew it in the stretch. Maybe with more seasoning, you'll be able to do better.

According to you, the GOP is the stupid party (agreed) headed by the stupid president (agreed), but we should vote for them anyway (not a chance).

How is THAT going to change this idiotic plunge ahead with amnesty, no fence being built, Simpson-Mazzoli not being enforced, all the while spending like drunken sailors?

But, oh yeah, we should vote for them anyway.

Are you outta your mind? That's why they're performing so badly in the first place?

I've heard other "commentators" wonder why Blacks vote for the Democrats in such large percentages when it's really against their own self-interest, then turn around and urge Conservatives to put on the same type of blinders for the GOP.

Not a chance, kid.

Conservatives no more
My father and my brothers and I fought and bled for our country because we believed in it. We are supposed to be a constitutional republic where our elected representatives reflect the will of the people in accordance with the rule of law. Well, that's down the tubes. Law? Nobody enforces the current immigration laws. And representing the people? It is to laugh. We have career politicians who owe allegience to nobody except the power base. I am old and in decline: the good news is that I won't live to see the harvest that has been planted by the politicians (republican, democrats, independent).

Also,
with amnesty Our new roommates will be able to exercise their 2nd Amendment and be armed.

BrianR
Well said, brother!!

What's the point?
Why even bother writing articles about how stupid Republicans are; they're a dead party now just as the country is now dead.

BrianR,
you got it right. Voting for Republican clowns who are not quite as bad as other Republican clowns has helped bring us to where we are today. In fact, even though I hate it, I believe that BOTH parties are working to destroy our country.

I hear you Realist. I'm seventy-two come June, and I do not want to see the end result of this treason. The tragedy is that it is probably too late to do anything about it.

It's a wonder you still get out of bed
It's time to take those covers off you head and jump in for the ride of a life time. Enough of the crying, it's time to pick up the pieces and find someone who can do the job the Conservatives and Republicans want them to do. Sounds like you listen to much to the propaganda of the Democrats and the media. The polls against the war are low. So what. President Bush poll numbers are low. So what. Schumer is calling for a vote of no confidence of Gonzalez. Who cares. Pelosi thinks the November elections gave her the Presidency. She's a nut. Murtha screams and yells at Republicans more then Hillary screams and yells about her rights to scream and yell. Big deal. The Democrats considers pork more important then the war in Iraq. Of course. When Pelosi said it was time for a woman to clean house, the Democrats thought it meant to get rid of all the Republicans through scandals and complaints. You can't take it to an extreme the way the Democrats do and expect to enjoy life and still be able to function in a reasonable manner. Look at the Democrats. They're all nuts. Throwing in the towel is easy. Fighting back is worth the ride.

On Libertarian & Constitution Parties
Hawkins says that voting Libertarian or Constitution parties is a "wasted vote" -- and goes on to say you'd be better off not voting at all.

I strongly disagree.

First off, the Libertarians rarely get more than 1 or 2% of the popular vote, and *none* of the electoral votes. Even in an election where 2% might make a difference, the electoral votes are what decides the president.

Of course there are other races, but very few of them are so close where losing 1-2% will make a difference.

And the Constitution party gets even fewer. They're not even registered on the ballot in all 50 states yet. Using them as an example is like buying insurance against meteor strikes.

Second, probably the biggest reason Libertarians don't win is that it's become "conventional wisdom" that they can't win. It's circular logic; don't vote "L" because you're wasting your vote and they can't win; and they can't win because people don't want to waste their vote.

It's entirely absurd. Libertarians can win as much as anyone else, if people would just forget about this "wasted vote" nonsense and vote Libertarian!

I mean, come ON, you don't get a prize or nothing for guessing who's gonna win!

This discussion came up about Ron Paul -- somebody on these forums said, "Oh, he's libertarian, he can't win" -- WHAT?? Out of a field of 10 candidates, 15 of which NOBODY has ever HEARD OF before, why are his odds any worse than anyone else's?

At least you've HEARD of the guy! You *know* what he's about!

Third, and probably most important: if the Republicans are afraid they'll lose because of votes going to Libertarians -- maybe they need to start to act more like Libertarians! Maybe if the Republicans had actually DONE something towards LIMITING government, they would have won in 2006.

If you can't show your displeasure with a candidate by voting him out of office, what are you supposed to do? Assassinate the guy? Well, as attractive as that option may be, it's simply not practical. The FBI and Secret Service tend to frown on those sorts of goings on.

Are Democrats even worse? Of course, without a doubt. But if the Republicans clean up their act, it's only for one term. Maybe a little "cool down" time will let them ponder their mistakes.

If they *don't* clean up their act, they don't *deserve* to win.

One more nail for McCain's Presidential
coffin, driven in by himself!

About a month ago, when McCain suddenly discovered his own lack of popularity, he spent some time getting conservative talk show hosts, such as Bill Bennett, to help him understand what happened.

People were happy to volunteer their opinions.

If only Senator McCain would listen!

The pride with which he unveiled this stinking bill made me realize exactly how out of touch he is.

McCain's playing footsie with Kennedy was disgusting enough, and we all told him so, but this bill really takes the cake. And his pride and arrogance about it!

Well I give up.

There simply is no hope for the man.

Third party candidates
I have no problem w/ a strong 3rd party candidate, as long as he is firmly for the original conservative principles. My main concern w/ some 3rd party folks is national defense. I didn't get to see the debates the other night, but if the Libertarian stance is to blame America for 9/11, then I can't support them. I've been around long enough to know that if we don't stay up front and in the face of this evil band of terrorists, they will slowly creep up to our door. We can't retreat back to a "fortress" mentality or we will find ourselves standing alone against a world overrun w/ islamic nutjobs in control. Because of our inaction for too long is why Bin Ladin and his gang grew in strength and boldness. It didn't happen overnight. We gave them the impression of the "paper tiger" and they came after us.
I also believe that if our "conservative" leaders don't stand up and be counted on the amnesty bill, they will lose even more ground down the road. I believe their inaction on the illegal immigration is the true cause of their loss of power last year. That's my 2 cents.

The Stupid Party
They are all stupid. Every pol in DC is brainless.

http://peppermintsplace.townhall.com
I have a new article called "The Nukes and Us" seems to apply to the stupid pols.

Ya'll are still fighting
the last war You're so busy blaming the liberals for everything wrong in the world that you don't seem capable of recognizing that you just had your turn at bat, and blew it. You can't learn from mistakes without admitting them. Meanwhile the the game has changed ,an you don't have a clue what how to come up with new tactics that fit the new situation. You can throw whatever you want at me or anyone else, but that doesn't mean you have any sense of the way forward, cause it's new territory ahead. The dems don't have a clue either. But the pendulum is swinging their way. They'll probably blow it too. The Neocons have probably brought us the new Chinese century.

Destroy the Village
We have to destroy the village before we can save it! Look, if 8 years of Jorge Bush as President can destroy the Republican Party, then perhaps 4 or 8 years of Clinton II or Osama Obama could do the same for the Democratic Party. No, I won't vote for either of those socialist clowns but I also won't vote for essentially the same thing in John McCain or Rudy Giuliani.

Of course once the demographic tsunami is fully released with the signing of this amnesty bill there's really no hope for conservatism anyway. Voting for a conservative Republican (if any are avaailable) will largely become a symbolic gesture. I might as well get used to symbolic gestures by voting for a libertarian or constitution party candidate in 2008.

Maybe so, a week ago
I would have had a more favorable reaction to this article even one or two short weeks ago. I tend to agree that so far, a vote for Libertarians does become a wasted vote and leads to empowerment of the Democrats.

I totally agree that no one can have it all, and it is childish to dump out of spite an otherwise good representative who is strong on 75% of important issues that are important to you but disagrees with you on one key issue. The world simply does not work that way.

However, we watched the problems documented in this article and worried as the dollars flowed out of our pockets while the budget grew and grew. We listened to the rationalizations for why the President can't or won't fight back with the Democrats who revile him daily, and for the reasons the rules of engagement in Iraq need to be the way they are. We understand that containment of the basket of snakes that is the ME is a gut wrenching problem, and that mistakes are made in every war. We trusted that the pols in their hearts would recognize the multitude of problems an open borders policy could create, and that when push came to shove, they would look at how the country felt about this issue, and would do at least a semblance of the right thing. Especially after the Fort Dix incident highlighted the danger for us.

But with the amnesty bill - coming NOW?! Sorry, I've thrown up my hands. No $ for the Republican party, and no votes - ever - period - for anyone who supports this bill. There comes a point in time when enough is enough.

This article is right on target . . .
Republicans are just dumb. Or more accurately, our political Republican elite is dumb. And they WILL lose another election. And they WILL sell out this country again on immigration (I mean, how DUMB do you have to be to support amnesty for folks here illegally, and simultaneously to support giving Dems 100s of thousands/millions of new voters once the illegals are given citizenship? Repub pandering to them won't help (and is wrong anyway) because it would alienate the millions of remaining Repub voters who disapprove of any form of affirmative action for ANYBODY, on principle. We pass this absolutely obscene prescription drug bill. Veto no pork spending. And people, this is coming from a relatively "moderate" conservative. At any rate, why should I even vote in 2008? FL might institute a "None of the above" option. Maybe that will work. These people . . .

Getting divorced from reality
There is an unworldly air about most of these comments. It’s as if the Libertarians and other assorted fruits and nuts of this country don’t really live here; they are visitors from Mars and will fly back to their own planet after laughing at the foolishness of the inhabitants.

Face it folks, we are not bystanders to history; we’re in this country and what happens to it happens to all of us. If you want to punish the Republicans, you empower the Democrats and you get ruled by Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Russ Feingold and Teddy Kennedy just like the rest of us. And their policies for defeat by the Islamofascists and their policies to raise your taxes will affect you directly. But maybe you are buying that lot in Costa Rica?

Politics and its results have a direct impact on your lives. If I had my druthers I would rather not have John Warner as my senator. But he is a better choice than Jim Webb who appears to be mentally unstable and who will do everything in his power to insure that we lose in Iraq and to raise my taxes.

There ought to be some way that the kooks and barnacles that casually attach themselves to the “Right” side of the political spectrum can be marginalized. Oh, I see that they are doing it to themselves.

Voting for a candidate
who doesn't have a chance, a protest vote, is the closest thing we voters have to approximate a vote for "none of the above". I've done it before and looks like i'll do it again. I keep hoping some semi-intelligent pol will get a message that there are quite a few unhappy voters out there.
Perhaps 4 or 8 years of DEM control will destroy the DEMs, like Sammy proposes. Just what or who would fill the vacuum is a scarey puzzle. The voting population hasn't shown much sagacity for years.

I agree
Peppermint has it absolutely right!! Not one of the pols in DC are worth the powder to blow them to he**. Until we get rid of BOTH parties and put in people who function strictly with in the Constitution and are fiscally prudent we will have NO CHANGE in our government. Currently this nation is back where it was when our forefathers founded it "Taxation without representation" and being governed by tyrants! I suggest every one go back and read the Declaration of Independence and tell me which of the charges levied against the King of England would not apply to our current pols? This nation has lost its way and our salvation does NOT lie with either the Republicans or the Democrats. As Einstein said; "Insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting different results." Nothing short of total elimination of both parties will change anything, voting them back in to office every few years has only proven they are selfish, power hungry, incompetents that can not be trusted with the welfare of our nation!

P.S. Why the he** is He** an unacceptable word here? We can find that word used in the Bible?

What big government has wrought . . .
Let me relay my wife's and my experience trying to adopt a baby from a foreign country (its adoption rules are more sane than ours). The U.S. govt. (not the other country's govt.) requires us to get fingerprinted and to pay 600 dollars give or take for the honor . This must occur in the Jacksonville office. But when you call that office to set a time, no live person answers. Finally, you get somebody who speaks broken English who doesn't know how the bureacracy works but somehow got hired there. NOBODY can tell you which two days during the week they take fingerprints, before you take a day off work and drive 300 miles. When you finally figure it out, and get there, at least half the workers do not speak English. And it is the same with figuring out the passport system. A MASSIVE BUREACRACY, and it is geared towards helping everybody but native born American English speaking peoples. And the communist country from which we are adopting actually has less bureacracy and political red tape. Go figure . . . Thanks George Bush. And George, I KNOW it does not cost $600 for my fingerprints or to run a check on them, but that you take that money and spend it on other things unrelated to our attempt to adopt a poor little girl.

Hey folks, I have never had the honor of serving in the military, but I pay taxes, had a relative killed in Vietnam, several fly over Germany during the bombing runs of WWII, and have been a law abiding citizen. And yet I cannot communicate with members of a bureacracy with which I MUST deal. Push "1" if Spanish? What a load of . . . . give me a break.

The Republican Party will
be gone in just a few years when these "new citizens" start to vote..Does anyone think they will vote Republican? Can they be that stupid?
This amnesty bill will kill this country, every one of the illegals will demand hire wages as soon as he gets his Z visa card,He will bring in all his relatives most of whom will wind up on welfare, crime will rise, prices will soar for products that "require" these folks [although if we cut off the welfare gravytrain, we wouldn't "need" them at all]. Old adage: Don't feed stray cats.No need to round them up,enforce the law and they will go home, they found their way here didn't they?
An entire new set of them will appear that WILL pick lettuce for cheap and the whole thing will start over again.

All this social engineering has ruined this country. I grew up in a small town in NJ, no crime, none. Because we had a Chief of police that enforced the law, if you didn't live there, you were asked what you were doing there, if you couldn't give a "good account of yourself" you got run the hell out, with a good tune-up if you lipped off. The other towns were the same way, the word got around and the riff-raff found new places to hang out.

The libs will call that racist or whatever, I call it smart, that town is rich, diverse and property values are through the roof.

My bride said just last night, we were lucky to live during the best times of this country, but I feel for the grandkids.

Dumb
The elected members of both parties are out of touch.

None of the bunch seems able to distinguish between immigrants and temporary workers. Look how smart illegal aliens are: not bothering even to acquire a passport from their country of origin or to apply for the temporary worker programs ALREADY in effect, they've illegally entered our country and now have our simpleton politicians scrambling to fix our 'broken' immigration system.

And consider this poorly named 'War on Terror'. Let's be honest. This is a continuation of a 1400 year old war being waged in compliance with the very tenets of Islam against every non-Muslim. We are at war with Islam--and therefore with Muslims (those who believe they have a divine obligation to impose their 'complete way of life' on others and to defend--by force--those who 'attack Islam' by standing in the way of that imposition, and those 'moderate' Muslims who know what Qur'an and Sunnah really state but pretend otherwise).

Remember, it was politicians who coined the ridiculous phrase 'Freedom Fries'.

This won't stand!
I'm a European and consequently don't vote, but I tell you, the world is falling to pieces before our very eyes and the GOP - which is supposed to be our last hope - is doing this! With a Dem in power in the White House we're done for! Very, very worrying indeed ... gentlemen, pull your socks up - fast!!!

The end of the US as we knew it?
I am a centrist independent who slowly migrated to the Republicans over the last 20 years.
The Democratic leaders are able to drag around their voters to where I've decided most are stupid blind followers.

Republican leaders are too diverse. They seemed to be independent thinkers, leading independent thinking voters. It has always been a weakness but one that was founded on personal integrity (I thought). Sadly I now believe I was wrong or maybe the leaders are a new breed that I don't understand.

I am forgiving but we all have our line in the sand. Mine is border control, illegal aliens and dealing with the war on terrorism.

If this immigration bill passes, I will no longer vote. I will sadly give up on the Republicans. How can anyone follow people who can't lead and have a value system that changes faster than a river at flood stage and can't stand and fight?

The Republican party is doomed and the Democrats will destroy the country just because they value money and power over the public interest.

We Got Sold Out!

FROM DA KING

Sen. Isakson and Sen. Chambliss stand with Kennedy for largest amnesty in history

DEAR GEORGIANS,

Your two Senators stood at the press conference this afternoon and lent their support to the worst immigration bill in history — and there have been some disastrous ones.

After months of promising the voters of Georgia that they would never participate in full legalization of the 12-20 million illegal aliens, these two Senators are embracing a bill that will allow more than 98% of them to remain in your communities and job markets forever.

And your Senators didn’t even get the trigger they talked so much about. Rosemary Jenks is reading the bill and says that there are loopholes that allow the full amnesty whether or not any additional enforcement measures are ever implemented. In fact, the enforcement sections are as riddled with loopholes as the 1986 amnesty, Rosemary says.

Sen. Isakson and Sen. Chambliss have been played as fools by Pres. Bush and Sen. Kennedy.

Their embarrassment would be greatly reduced if you can persuade them to vote NO next Monday.

The state of Georgia and the good citizens of Georgia are being used as the primary props to try to convince the nation that this bill will end illegal immigration and do what is best for the American people.

It is in your hands whether Sen. Chambliss and Sen. Isakson will be allowed to continue to represent you in this way.

Chambliss, Saxby GA (R) 912-232-3657 2 East Bryan Street Savannah, GA 31401

Maverick
I gotta agree with maverick. Fight until you have to revolt to make it right! The political elite is out-of-touch with us and have been since Reagan left office. Do we BOHICA or do we FIGHT BACK! We have to BADGER them and give them the chance to do right. If they don't, well our Founding Fathers gave us the tool to replace a tyrannical government, it's called the Second Amendment. Why do you think the Libs and the RINOs want it GONE!!!

BTW, check my blog and see why The Gunny got BANNED from Wikipedia! haha. Sent to Siberia by the commie intelligencia! haha!

Stupid Party

Who actually believes the President has any intention of building a fence? How will we enforce new laws when we won't enforce current laws? Will the people breaking current law comply with any new law?
Who actually believes, that when George W. Bush delivers on his promises to citizens of other countries illegally in our country, that they will vote Republican? Another amnesty will result in Democrat majorities for decades. How stupid do you have to be to import voters for the opposition at the same time you alienate your own voters? If the GOP surrenders our sovereignty and abandons the rule of law, they may find in November 2008, that they still have their big money/cheap labor donors, but they do not have voters. GOP-RIP

A wasted vote?
I'm with unca Alby. The only wasted vote is the one not cast. I vote Libertarian to try to steer the GOP back to where it was back when.
Will it work? Who knows.

Things got bad
in 1775 too. Armed citizens changed their govt. Its been done many times in many places since. The Russian military debacle in WWI cost the Czar his country and life. Mao said and demonstrated that political power emanates from the barrel of a gun. Our freedom was won by force and has been defended and maintained by force of arms many times. Jefferson was pessimistic about voter intelligence and estimated a house cleaning would be necesary every 25 years or so. I hope he continues to be overly pessimistic. It would be tragedy to see violence while voting can still alter the power structure. However, the current plus 90 percent re-election rate can hardly be called change.

Gregdn
Been there, done that. Reagan gave me a major candidate to vote FOR. Now its back to the fringe.

gently99
Remember, the colonists gave Britain numerous chances to ease up and even during the revolution, only 30% were FOR it (Patriots) with 30% AGAINST freedom (Liberals). (Gee, some things never change!)

Virginia Patriot
I've written and emailed my Reps and Sens on this issue and told them my stance and why it's a bad idea. I suggest ALL HANDS do this as well. Then, when the crapola hits the fan, our conscience will be clear, it'll be on the heads of the RINOS.

Right on, Virginia Patriot
All this bs about new laws, new solutions to the illegal alien problem -- its all bs. The "solution" wasn't enforced in '85 and only enforcement will succeed. A fence, expanding the Border Patrol, new visas -- all junk unless enforced. Jail a couple thousand employers and a few thousand illegal aliens and the rest will leave. If it turns out we then need cheap labor, institute a well enforced labor program. This whole mess is so stupid and easily fixed, i question the sanity and intentions of any pol who supports amnesty. And where is the chorus of pols protesting shoulder to shoulder in numbers that can't be ignored? Throw the rascals out. Heads must roll.

GunnyG
Right. And of the 30%, perhaps 10% took up arms. That's 3% of the general population. But that's all it takes. The Bolsheviks took over Russia, never amounting to more than 1%. The Taliban ruled Afghanistan with less than 2%. One armed man with guts decides what will happen to about 50 wussies thinking go along to get along.

gently99
Agreed on the labor program ala the CCC.

If someone is collecting unemployment bennies and turns down the call to the "Labor Corps" then you stop their bennies. Same with the welfarites. They refuse work, they get cutoff.

In the Corps, EVERYONE goes to the field, I've seen guys with CASTS on manning phones, doing admin, etc.

The same should apply in civilian life. EVERYONE pitches in, it's called OWNERSHIP!

What????
Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind this Amnesty Bill. Let's
say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, "I've mowed the lawn, landscaped the beds, swept the driveway, cleaned the pool, shingled the roof and painted the house. I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hardworking and honest (except for when I broke into your house)." According to the new bill:
You are required to let me stay in your house. You are required to add me to your family's insurance plan. You are required to educate my kids. You are required to provide other benefits to me & to my family (my wife will clean the house, wash the dishes, mop the floor, vacuum the rugs, get your kids ready for school because she is also hardworking and honest, except for that breaking in part). If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call all my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.
It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm a hardworking and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house. And what a deal it is for me!!! I live in your house, contributing only a
fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of being cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior. Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you to learn MY LANGUAGE!!! so you can communicate with me. Why can't (the RIGHT)people in Washington see how ridiculous this is?! (Reprinted from an email I received).

Stix

Folks, it's long over
The battle was lost in the 60's when we started worrying about self-esteem in schools, rather than developing critical thinking capacity.

There is NO standpoint advanced by the Dems that can stand serious scruitiny. Unfortunately, the electorate doesn't know how to scrutinize anything any more. THAT'S how we got this Democrat Congress; THAT'S how we got all these RINOs; that's what's driving (or not) the "national dialog" about direction of the country.

The stuff spewed by the liberals (R and R alike) is being drunken in by stupid voters who can't decide the simplest things like whether to have a pizza or hamburgers for supper. They can't study issues and determine a well-thought out opinion on anything.

We lost it a long time ago. And the "leaders" of both parties reflect the rampant stupidity coast to coast.

Voting Libertarian is NOT a waste
It's true: The Libertarian Party will probably not win anything beyond maybe one seat in Congress during my lifetime, and even that is less than 50/50.

But that doesn't mean voting Libertarian is a waste for a Republican who is disgusted with the behavior of the GOP currently.

In both the Montana and Missouri Senate races (and in one House race in Indiana, I believe), the Republican lost by fewer votes than the Libertarian received.

So, if you believe that most of those votes would have gone Republican had there been no Libertarian candidate, the GOP would still have a majority in and control of the Senate.

I can't stand the Democrats' socialist and consistently unconstitutional positions on most issues. But if the Republicans are going to govern like Democrats in terms of spending and corruption, then having the GOP lose because Libertarians got votes is a very powerful lesson - much more powerful than the lesson of simply losing to a Democrat.

So while I would prefer to see Republicans win (because that really means we get Democrats, not Libertarians), it's not at any cost...not at the cost of bad government. Since the Democrats, by their very nature (anti-capitalist and owned by unions) can never be the party of good government, Republicans are going to have to take enough pain to realize that in order to win they need to return to our founding principles of liberty and limited government.

A vote for a Democrat can never send a message to the GOP that people yearn for those founding principles, but a vote for a Libertarian or Constitution Party candidate certainly can.

Therefore, I have no problem with people voting Libertarian, even if it causes Republicans to lose, until such time as the Republican Party returns to being something that Reagan and Goldwater would be proud of.

Ownership?
You mean like we're all owned by the Federal Reserve?

PhD, JD
PhD, JD posted that, "our political Republican elite is dumb. And they WILL lose another election. And they WILL sell out this country again on immigration."

Sheeeesh!

How many times do I have to write this? There are two problems. One problem pertain to the millions of people who have entered our country illegally or have entered legally but stay after their visa has expired.
That means they have violated the federal statutes regarding illegal entry, falsifying the federal employment statutes, used false/stolen SSN's, etc.

The other problem (legal immigration) involves people who actually want to leave their country of origin and move to the USA to become American citizens. In other words, they do the paperwork necessary and comply with the law.

PhD with your JD, which problem is worse? People entering our country illegally, or people who openly identify themselves and want to be American citizens?

I don't expect or require a response from you.

Rossputin
Exactly. Why vote for a RINO? You have all the downsides of putting in a DEM (big pork, big govt, amnesty for aliens) and then the GOP gets the blame. I reserve the exception to vote for a president if it appears there is a better chance to get a strict constructionist onto SCOTUS.

What else can we do?
As someone who is relatively young--29--I have only recently gotten involved with the GOP at a "grassroots" level, volunteering time and money before and after the 2004 election.
I live in CO and we were supposed to be able to do our primary voting from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a particular day. The ballots were to come from Denver--they didn't show up until 4 P.M. on voting day!!! The rules state that primary voting cannot be extended and we were only allowed a 2 hour window! And then surprise Surprise! the Denver/Aspen/Vail RINO candidates won the primaries! The GOP ran totally worhtless candidates that couldn't get elected into a paper bag. The rest of us had no voice. Denver did our voting for us. When we spoke to Denver they told us "that's just too bad. . . the rules state. . ." blah, blah, blah. This prooved to me that even getting involved on a local level won't do it--the polital parties--both of them--are too far gone.
I'm with gently99 when they won't listen to us after years of screaming--it will come down to the last straw.
My neighbor is already flying the "Don't tread on me" flag. I'm going to ask where he picked it up.

GOP DOES NOT GET IT
GOPlost because it is not taking a care of Americans, only pandering to illegals.
It's base finally got fed up.
SCreeew 'em too!

Stupid Is As Stupid Does
Are Republicans stuck on stupid or stuck with Stupid?

Sam
What the he!! are you talking about? The Fed "owns" us? Please explain.

One poster stated that the only wasted vote is the vote not cast. I completely agree. Just for once, I want to be able to vote "FOR" someone, not be forced to pick the lesser of two evils. At this point I don't care what party they're in.

Really stupid analysis
Anyone remember Reagan or Gingrich?

It seems like they offered REAL policy initiatives that appealed to a broad base of conservative leaning voters of every demographic and political discipline. Now we get crap - and we're supposed to support it anyway?

The GOP has ceased acting in the interest of conservative Americans, it has consistently supported RINO's even when there were strong conservative primary challenges. The refusal to "clean their own dirty laundry" by supporting or even allowing viable primary challengers lead to a weak cast of GOP incumbents who got beat by stronger Democrat candidates. (many ran more conservative campaigns than the GOP candidate)

I've stopped sending money to the GOP. I still contribute - but I do it directly to candidates who are sincere and strong conservatives. I will always cast my vote for the best viable candidate - even if it's a RINO, but If the GOP wants my money - they need to give me a reason to do so.

Sad day for America
I want everyone to think about something. Yesterday TED KENNEDY, a lowlife who has had every advantage in life and has accomplished NOTHING of value, was allowed to determine the future of this country. The shameful, destructive amnesty bill he wrote will soon be the law of the land.

Presidential candidate George H. W. Bush said "Read my lips, no new taxes." He then raised taxes and the result was 8 years of Bill Clinton.

Today his son, George W. Bush, says this amnesty bill "is the solution." And the result of this will be 8 years of Hillary Clinton.

Republicans fail when we elect moderates and liberals in our primaries. Silicondoc has it exactly right. If our Republican majority in the Senate includes liberals like Snowe, Collins, Chaffee, and Specter, and RINO's like McCain and Graham, and various weenies like Chuck Hagel and George Voinovich, we don't really have a majority, do we?

How many of us grass roots conservatives remember that when Tom Daschle was Senate Majority Leader (a position he literally bribed his way into) he finally granted an up-or-down vote on drilling in ANWR and it went down? It went down even though there were 50 Senators that were elected as Republicans and a tie would have been broken by Dick Cheney. Daschle of course would never have granted the vote if he thought it would pass, and his own private count showed him that the liberal RINO's from New England and a few other Republican weenies would vote with the environmentalist whackos.

And this is just one of many conservative initiatives that died the same way. Or never even made it out of committee.

Ronald Reagan's first budget director, David Stockman, resigned because while he was trying to put together responsible budgets he was bombarded by demands for pork from REPUBLICAN Congressmen who believed that a Republican administration had an obligation to help them get re-elected.

That is NOT what conservatives elect our representatives to do.

My own Congressman, Vern Ehlers, voted AGAINST drilling ANWR when it came up in the House and then posted a statement on his website bragging about how he had joined a group of 25 "moderates" in the House. I wanted to puke. I sent him a scathing email. To give you an idea how much impact my email had, I received a voice mail a couple months ago. It was a recording of Ehlers voice inviting me to attend a local fundraiser FOR HIM AND JOHN MCCAIN.

NRCC Chairman Tom Cole has sent me two emailed invitations this week to have "dinner with the President" on June 13 and have lunch with RNC and GOP leaders the next day. He has tried to con me with flattery by telling me I am now an Honorary Chairman and a member of something called the Business Advisory Council. I have not yet been told how much I will be expected to donate if I attend, but it doesn't matter. These guys are RINO's so I won't be going. I'll be playing golf instead. And if John Hawkins thinks I'm "wasting" an opportunity that's too bad...for him.

Another comment. A previous poster contends that the only reason the Libertarians can't win is because people think they can't win. I beg to differ. As long as the Libertarians keep producing Presidential Candidates like Ron Paul, who is further left than Barack Obama on the issue of terror, they will never be a significant force in American politics, only a drain on Conservative Republican support. And if Paul really is a Libertarian he is also a fraud, since he wants to run as a Republican. Let him be honest and run as a Libertarian. That way he won't continue to make an @ss of himself in the GOP debates.

And I don't want to hear any more crap from Hawkins, the GOP, the RNC, the NRCC, or anyone else about being a complainer. I have donated heavily to the Republicans or I wouldn't be receiving these invitations. And I went door-to-door for Bush in 2004 because we need to win in Iraq and Kerry is lying scum. But they don't care what I want or what I think. They just want my money so they can keep using it to wipe the Democrats' butts.

When they get behind real conservative LEADERS instead of continuing to shove RINO's at us they won't have to beg for donations and volunteers. We will respond without being prompted.

How very Democratic of you........
"In fact, a person who doesn't vote is smarter than a person who votes for candidates from the Libertarian Party or Constitution Party, because both people wasted their chance to impact who's going to be in power, but the LP or CP voter wasted his time as well by standing in line at the polling place to do it. "

I'm hoping this is simply despair speaking, and not your true feelings about our Democracy, Mr Hawkins. For if you REALLY think anyone voting for a politician that most likely will ot win is a bigger fool than someone that just sits at home not contributing, well..........

The debate
Some of you may not have seen the Republican Debate in Columbia, SC. I attended that debate. What I saw and heard from some of those candidates do fit this description in this article. However, there were a couple of candidates that showed courage and fortitude to take on real issues. Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter topped my list. Yes, Ron Paul DID blame America for terrorist attacks, especially 911. That doesn't fly well in my book. Certainly, if that is the stand Libertarians take, I'm not voting for that insanity. Ron Paul is a wolf in sheep's clothing, folks! However, McCain and Romney don't seem to get it, either. They were both soft and wishy washy on 'torture'. No, we don't want to start shoving bamboo shoots under fingernails or apply electrical shocks to genitalia but if we have a terrorist in custody that could provide valuable information that could be used to prevent another attack, do what is necessary to get that information. Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter seem to understand that concept. And illegal immigration? Tom Tancredo has everyone beat on that issue. He abhors the current 'solution' to illegals.

Yes, I would prefer to see a strong third party unseat both dems and reps but we don't have that right now. Both the dems and reps have monopolized our elections and, therefore, our government. That is truly frightening as it has set up a pseudo-dictatorship. But if our choices are limited (imho, that is very un-American) then we have to choose the best we can. Not all reps are scoundrels even though it is true that many are. Reps may be stupid, arrogant, and refuse to listen to the American people but the dems are wholly evil. Dems attempt to control the masses with promises they don't intend to keep. I'd rather chance a stupid, arrogant Rep in the Oval office than a power-hungry, self-serving, nation-destroying, un-American Dem.

Right now, my choice is still Tom Tancredo. I hope my fellow Americans are smart enough to follow suit.

For gabby
I agree that Ron Paul is not afraid to take on the Democrats...as long as he has enough "stupid" Republicans backing him.

He is, however, afraid to take on al Qaeda. That's why he wants to ask them why they're mad at us instead of kicking their butts relentlessly until they understand that Americans are not ever going to be some dihmmi race they can subjugate.

NeoCon Mommas always said
Stupid is as stupid does. I guess they weren't listening.

By the way, Benjamin Franklin said to Mrs. Powel, "A Republic if you can keep it."

He said nothing about a democracy. We are, or at least were, a Constitutional Repbublic.

No Comment on Comey?

Why do you suppose it is that not a single columnist on this site has written a word about Jim Comey's testimony the other day?

.

"Opinions r Like..."
I've read all posts here and the folks all have great points. We all have great points, however the toughest thing to do would be to get behind candidate's that will follow the will of the people and not just tell us... WE must decide who is and will do what we want and not shift into another gear after victory. Secondly, we must decide the top #of priorities and then "hold their heels til finee". We need to set the priority not them, not self interest, not media, not $, etc. Now we have the agenda, who is the first to grab it? By the way, it best be done very quickly as " they are coming to take us away, they r coming ....

Why are Republicans surprised?
Left wing lobbyists are constantly harranguing politicians on Capital Hill. Meanwhile, conservatives sit on their hands.

Democrats are good at convincing people that "everyone" is in favor of something, when actually leftist ideas are very unpopular. Look how they have so many people duped into believing in Gore-bull Warming!!!

This is why McCain seems astonishingly ignorant of how this legislation is killing any chance he had at getting elected as president.

I just dont understand
why George Bush is allowing Ted Kennedy to define his presidency. With this immigration bill W has condemmed himself to be ranked with Jimmy Carter as one of the worst presidents in the last 100 years despite his firmness in fighting the islamists.(terror is a tactic not a war). Add this to the education bill he let him write plus the new spending for perscriptions in medicare and you have a liberal democrat who will fight the islamists. Ive had enough of him.
WE are losing the base and giving 2008 to the Clintons. We are giving the country to illegals who will bankrupt our children with entitlements and creating more voterers for the socialist democrats so that we may never get the country back. And you wonder why people pick up guns?

Even as the amnesty bill
was being announced. (or a short time later) Illegals were gathering in Los Angeles for a candle light vigile in protest of the way they were treated during the last protest. Where do they stop? All these people do is a constant protest.. I'm SICK SICK SICK of it!!

They were interviewed and weren't satified with this new bill. And yelling about their rights!!

I have phoned until I feel the phone is growing to my ear. I'll continue to do so, and Hope some one of these "leaders" will wake up to what they are doing to the United States.

beyond the pale

There is a better flag out there. It depicts the "Don't tread on me" snake in a striking pose with the words "TOO LATE." I know because I have the T-shirt version. It amuses me no end when people say "too late for what." I just look at them and say "don't worry about it."

BTW- Why is no one addressing
the issue of what to do with the foreign subversives who try to stir up discontent among these imported descamesados?

It is foolhardy to import this slave labor class, and not notice the agitators from Columbia, El Salvador and Niquaragua who are slipping over the border along with the rabble?

While the clueless were sleeping, the Trojan Horses were insinuating themselves into positions of power in Los Angeles, and now the city seems to be almost entirely run by Socialists who sympathasize with the subversives and who do their best to emasculate our once stellar police department.

If you think this won't happen in your community, you better open your eyes.

Even in some cities far from the Mexican border, the population of Hispanics has already risen to 25%! These girls are popping out babies like machines, while American-born white girls are aborting all their babies.

You do the math. In a generation, they will outnumber us, and then start the process of taking over, in the same way that South Africa was stolen from the Afrikaners.

Think it can't happen here?

Wake up and smell the Columbian Coffee!

Politics-the reality
1. Politics is about compromise, whether you like it or not. As individuals, we're all somewhere on the ideolgical bell curve, which means that there are x% of other citizens with equal rights who don't agree with us.

2. Change does not come about overnight except in places like 1959 Cuba. We have checks and balances that keep us from having coup d'etats, but that means radical change is not the order of the day.

3. What you do with your vote is up to you, but on the whole, sitting it out or punishing republicans is pretty much what gets you Speaker Nancy Peosi.

4. I have cast 3rd party votes to "send a message" before in my life...but with maturity realize no such message is really taken seriously. Whoever wins claims a mandate (even though they rarely win by more than 2 or 3%. Witness the current democratic leadership claiming the people have spoken!

5. There's much talk about the presidential candidate as if he/she will be the answer. I'd be willing to bet that many of the most voal about presidential politics are unaware of who they actually sent to congress from their own district.

We're in primaries: that's a time to search for your ideal candidate and work for him/her to get the nomination. But the eventual nominee will not please all of us 100%. That doesn't mean we should throw away our votes (take our ball and go home to pout).

Repuiblican Stupity
I would rather vote for a Lib. that has the beliefs most conservative have. The Rep./Dem have lost touch with the people. This latest committee vote on amnesty is a good example. If it becomes law, this country is down the tubes. Costa Rica
may be looking good.

On Fox
They had a sheriff on the Lorado, Texas border. The sheriff said that they had found clothing with patches on them that were written in 'Arabic, and they know it this patch is worn in terrorist countries. While the Fox reporter was riding with them, they caught two men that had just crossed the border in Lorado, that were from Honduras.

The sheriff said he is very concerned that terrorists have crossed there. The Hispanic mayor of Lorado denied it. But I trust the sheriff.

Our President has let us down in so many ways.I am furious, and heart broken. That is the worst kind of angry, to feel so betrayed by someone you believe in!!!!

on Nancy Pelosi
quoth SunThe1: "sitting it out or punishing republicans is pretty much what gets you Speaker Nancy Pelosi."

And which Republican speaker would have been any better?

I'm not voting for a RINO if I can help it. It doesn't make any difference to me if we have a Republican speaker who acts like a Democrat.

Might as well just get a Democrat speaker who's at least honest about being a Democrat.

I went to vote...
Tuesday was election day for a school board seat. I went to the polling place about 10 am...and I was only the sixth person that had showed up all morning!
I don't have any children.

However, I know that our schools are failing, yet BILLIONS of dollars over the budget for the entire city goes to the schools.

I have called my Senators and Congresspersons regarding the illegal alien issue, the city...and county.

There are six things that have to be done, or done away with....to make illegal aliens, terrorists or any other uninvited invader we mean business about war, regulation and our national security.

Silly me, I thought it WAS our elected official's business, the oath of their office to protect us from invasion.

Government expands as far as it can fit in your bedrooms and television sets and casual meeting areas...
But their REAL job? Nah...
They ain't innit for us...that's for sure.

On advocating unity
Too timid to take on Democrats? How about: too timid to take on extreme Republicans! Moderates within the party cowered for fear when it had control of Congress, too afraid to vote their conscience or their country’s best interest for fear of expulsion from the party. Votes were ALWAYS down party lines, which speaks volumes about our politicians’ lack of dignity and penchant for self-preservation. Furthermore, the reason spending is better now is because the GOP Congress members know their pork won’t be rubber-stamped any more. The worst news of all is that none of the candidates for 2008 appears to be worthy of the job. John, you are advocating unity in spite of mediocre representation. The only way they will get the message is if party members send a strong signal.

Wiseone
You are THE wise one. You said in your 9:25 am post: "And I don't want to hear any more crap from Hawkins, the GOP, the RNC, the NRCC, or anyone else about being a complainer. I have donated heavily to the Republicans or I wouldn't be receiving these invitations. And I went door-to-door for Bush in 2004 because we need to win in Iraq and Kerry is lying scum. But they don't care what I want or what I think. They just want my money so they can keep using it to wipe the Democrats' butts"
-------------------------------------------------
You are right on the money. I did the same thing in 2004 and never even got so much as a pat on the back. But I never expected one. What I expected was for the people that we elected to actually do something with what we gave them...an overwhelming majority. But alas they wasted it and now the nation is bickering and complaining and only 1 out of 4 actually believes Congress is doing a good job. But stupid people (the voters) keep voting them back into our Congress and our state legislatures.
Get a clue people. When only 1/3 of you eliglible voters are actually voting, crap happens.

Sad, sad, sad
To see the day when the president and all those other RINOs give in to the likes of Teddy 'Let'er Swim' Kennedy and traitorous ones
such as McCain---well, it is a sad day.
I have kept hoping that the Republican 'leaders' would come to their senses and see that the dems are doing their da##dest to sink this country.
They are too stupid, apparently, to see that very soon it will be against the law to speak English and will be mandatory to speak spanish--or mexican--whatever they want to call it.
And I agree with one poster who asks why in he## is it against the rules here to write the other word for hades??????????????

John Hawkins is right
After suspecting it for several years, I have reached the conclusion that "the People" that Senators and Representatives are elected to protect magically get replaced by "the Power" on the trip to DC. First and foremost on their minds is getting re-elected. So, enforcement of immigration laws as they are written quickly goes out the window and in comes a secretly negotiated immigration bill that they hope will garner them some new votes (but illegals are already voting). Funding for the troops who are putting their you-know-whats on the line day in and day out? No, not in any hurry for that - too tied up right now holding hearings and getting ready for the Memorial Day break... IT'S RIDICULOUS. Those whom we elected to act like responsible adults and get on with the business of the country are too busy trying to win popularity. They are all like children and I am sick and tired of it. Too bad we can't dump the entire lot of them and start over-Republicans included.

Ron Paul is now a Libertarian?
Its amazing how quickly public opinion can shift on a person. After the first GOP debate a lot of posters on this website were lauding Ron Paul as a conservative savior, a "pure" conservative as opposed to those "RINOs" leading the pack. After he made his statement about a possible reason for why we were attacked on 9/11 (a valid point by the way and something we should think more about), he has become a "fringe" candidate or a libertarian wackjob. My my how things change.

Sunthe1
Yes, indeed, the Republicans who didn't vote or cast a "punishing" vote put our country in the hands of the Democrats.

Folks, remember the probability of a vacancy on the Supreme Court if nothing else!!! Sitting it out will get us nowhere fast...and a vote cast for a definite loser, while making a "statement" will also do nothing more than give the Democrats the White House.

Speaking as one who lives in a state with no representation that reflects my standards of life, it is NOT a pleasant existence. If we end up with Democrats in the White House as well, Katie, bar the door! Does anyone remember how Bill Clinton got in???? Does the name Ross Perot ring a bell???

Get a clue, fellow conservatives, and do not let the Republicans lose the next election! Of course I'm not happy with some of the RINOs, however, the alternative can/will be BADDDDDDDDD!

TERM LIMITS!!!!!!

news hound
Great idea!!!! Can we begin with the leadership in both houses??

SunThe1- what compromise?
So what is in this deal for the United States of America?

ZIP.

Oh yes, there are advantages for the Multinational Corporations, who want to have a slave labor class in the USA, so that it is as cheap to make widgets here as in China or India, but for the rest of us poor slobs, it is a lousy deal!

Those of us who were highly paid professionals until Globalism reared its ugly head, and are struggling to retrain, uncertain if our new profession will be outsourced too, are not benefitted by the depression of wages caused by a glut of labor.

Poor people are not the only immigrants. Here in California, our upscale areas are being taken over by foreigners who are building palaces for themselves, and are clammoring for slave labor that they are accustomed to, because heaven forbid they live in a normal house. If they pay employees enough to live on, they may have to do without that tenth bedroom, or those gold-plated faucets.

Jimmy Carter
I guess you hadn't noticed. Our "New roommates" are already armed.

Bravado
A valid point that we should think about? The man is unhinged. When have WE been bombing Iraq for 10 years? I spent 3 tours in Saudi Arabia during the 90s to keep the no fly zone safe. The only thing we bombed were radar and SAM sites that fired on us. And you're going to tell me that is why Al Qaida torpedoed the WTC with airplanes? He certainly doesn't know anything about history or the religion of Islam.

Cape Conservative
That would be MY first vote! (In an effort to keep my sense of humor during these times) I'm trying to think of a title for the show: What about "American Idle" or "Bye Bye Big Brother"? Can't you just see it, the camera pans around the room as Nancy Pelosi packs up her designer suits and shoes, gets handed a set of desert fatigues, and shakes her head in dismay, "I just don't understand it. I was against funding the war - I thought that was what the people wanted. I guess this country just isn't ready for a female Speaker..." NOW I WOULD WATCH THAT EVERY WEEK!

CapeConservative - show me a
"conservative" worth voting for!

I am beginning to wish we could run Sarkosy of France as President. At least he is serious about curbing immigration there.

Why can't we find a man with a scr0@t who will boot all these losers out and slam the door?

litmus test
I suggest that we go back and look at the rino's that voted against those conservative judges.Next look at those that vote for this amnesty bill.Work to get rid of them, and financially back the true conservatives.

It's All A Magic Act
Song and dance. Two step shuffle. Smoke and mirrors.

There is NO REASON for new immigration laws.

THERE ARE LAWS ON THE BOOKS that would work if they were enforced.

Why do the politicians want us to believe they HAVE to enact some new legislation to deal with a problem that current laws cover????

No matter how you look at it, the politicians think you, the American people, are dumber than a box of rocks. It is really insulting that they expect us to believe the transparent lies regarding the illegal invasion.

Tired of Zero Leadership
I have been donating for years to the RNC, NRSC, and numerous grassroots organizations and causes. I'm the stupid one. I will continue to vote conservative no matter what. Also, I will continue to write to my senators and to my congressman in the hope of sparking a degree of leadership. Unfortunately, I have two senators from California who are blockheads, marching in lockstep with the rest of the Kool Aide drinkers on the left. My senators' position on most subjects are way off the map. While I consider them and their party to be felony stupid, I cannot help but agree that the RNC is even more so for not taking this group on. Both parties are so busy representing themselves they have forgotten the country as a whole.

Right on.

Ron Paul is certainly not unhinged. Instead of trying to disregard his views by writing him off as a nutcase, I think it would be more appropriate for you to say that you simply disagree with his perspective. And I doubt that you really know enough about Paul to be able to determine whether or not he knows "anything" about history or Islam.

But isn't it true that we worked with Bin Laden when fighting against the Soviets? What happened to cause us to go from being allied with him to becoming a target? Do you think Bin Laden woke up one day and said, "Well I'll be damned, the Americans believe in freedom after all," and then drew up plans to kill us? I can't imagine after serving overseas in the military you really believe the world (or the middle east specifically) is really that simplistic.

Paul isn't saying that Bin Laden and Al Qaeda aren't guilty of a heinous act and that they shouldn't pay for it. He's simply saying we ought to look deeper to figure out what it is we might be doing that is causing other people to hate us. Our treatment of Iraq after the Persian Gulf war is a relevant factor to consider, as is the fact that our military, you included, were stationed in the Holy Land of Saudi Arabia. Does that make it wrong? Not necessarily. But did it pis* a whole lot of people off. Absolutely.

RIGHT ON BUTCH!!
Wow, Butch, you took the words right out of my mouth!! So glad to hear that others have gotten as sick of this bunchin DC as I have. I haven't given a cent since the cave-in on the filibuster issue. "Not a dime til they get a spine", has been my motto.

This article
was so on the money! Just as we get the government we deserve, we also get the party we desrve! We need to get more organized, more active, and everyone needs to participate.

Bravado
I don't know for sure that Paul is Libertarian. It's more of a perception I have. He may in fact be a card-carrying Republican and I may have made a mistake by association based on the number of self-described Libertarians on this thread who support him.

But make no mistake about one thing. I have NEVER considered him to be a "conservative savior" and I have known about his pussilaminous approach to terror for months. This includes not only his desire to retreat from Iraq, but also his desire to repeal the Patriot Act.

In this sense his foolish remarks in the last debate came as no real surprise to me. I have known since I learned about it that his position on this issue would destroy any real chance he had for getting the GOP nomination.

I don't have any reason to believe he is a "whackjob", but I definitely think he is way too idealistic on this issue.

CapeConservative
Term limits.

Great idea, there's just one problem. How do we get these clowns to vote themselves into early retirement?

Fat chance.

5/18 opinion piece
Shockingly good at proving the veracity of the central thesis. It really is the party of the stupid in America.

An ounce of intellect drives you away from the GOP.

Wiseone
In fairness I did notice that Paul ran for President in the Libertarian party in 88. But he has since shifted back to the Republican party for--at least--the current election. And I agree with you that Paul ruined any chance he had at getting the nomination, though I doubt he had a real chance even before he made the statement.

But I part ways when it comes to describing his statement as a "foolish remark." In what way was it foolish? Doesn't the 9/11 Commission Report suggest that our foreign intervention may have inflamed hatred towards us? Doesn't common sense suggest it? As far as trying to get the nomination, it was probably a foolish comment. But as to getting to the truth and having an honest discussion about foreign policy, his comment was pretty valid.

Wasting Your Vote?
If you don't vote for what you believe (e.g., Constitution Party), you'll never get what you want. There's not a dime's worth of difference between the Dems and the GOP. One definition of insanity is voting for the GOP over and over, expecting to get a different result.

"Foolish remark"
I consider Ron Paul's remark to be foolish because it betrays a serious lack of knowledge of the history of Islam and Islamic terror.

Islamic terror was going on for decades before US troops were on Arab soil. And the history of Islam is one of conquering lands that belong to others by violence and then subjugating the natives of that land as "dhimmis" which essentially work as an infidel slave class subservient to the muslim ruling class. (And even the muslim ruling class is a rigid caste system.)

With or without US troops on Saudi soil, with or without the existence of Israel, with or without our country's "degenerate lifestyle", the Islamists who attacked the WTC in 2001 AND 1993 were just doing what Islam has been doing for 1300 years. The only things that made 9/11 more extreme than the typical Islamic imperialism is the number of people killed and the willingness to kill them by suicide.

Finally, I wouldn't give you two cents for the 9/11 Commission. Jamie Gorelick's presence on that "Commission" all by itself destroys any credibility it could have and virtually screams "COVER-UP" at the top of its lungs.

And don't even get me started on Sandy Berger helping Clinton prepare for his "testimony" by stealing documents out of the national archives. (puke).

The CIA, bin Laden, and Afghanistan
We DID NOT work with bin Laden to resist the Soviets in Afghanistan. This is a liberal lie.

The CIA provided weapons, most notably hand-held surface-to-air weapons, and training for afghan resisters.

After the Soviets withdrew in 1988 many of these trained resisters went to work for al Qaeda or the Taliban.

Bin Laden declared war on the US in 1986, two years BEFORE the Soviets withdrew and two years before the CIA and their Afghan trainees stopped fighting the Soviets.

Bravado
Our presence in Saudi Arabia is not the flash point for the trouble in the ME. We were invited into Saudi Arabia to protect them from invasion by Iraq. We were asked to stay by them because to leave would have left them vulnerable to an invasion by Iran or Iraq or both. You say the problems in the ME are not simple and I agree. But here's one thing that is. They hate us for aligning with Israel and being a Judeo-Christian society. They hate our freedoms and think of us as infidels. This is a religious thing make no mistake about it. Sometimes we have a habit of making things far too complicated than they really are. The only way to deal with their kind of hate is show love. Love for the Israelis. Love for the Iraqis. And show love for the Saudis and all the other Arabs. But we have got to rid the world of the extremists because that is the only way to finally change the world for the better.

It is not a wasted vote
when it tells rthe Party they are going wrong. Staying at home is a waste though because it doesn't tell the Party anything. And based on what I see from the Party leaders from the 06 election, they will inevitably get it wrong.

Make a phone call
I was just listening to Rush Limbaugh, and a caller phoned in who works on Capitol Hill. He said the volumn of phone calls is way up, with people who are upset with what's going on. The callers aren't just to someone in their district. Just as Americans, and they do pay atttention to them. Because these calls aren't from an orginazation, but from irate Americans.

lipstick on a pig
This article was dead on until it got to the "vote for the lesser of two evils" section at the end. H*ll no! These azzhats (thanks Gunny)in Congress are still running things as they always do. Sorry, but no more votes for RINOs. Penna has one Dem and one RINO Senator now; might as well have two Dems. Maybe if we all just say no, the RNC critters may just get the picture: we aren't going to kiss that pig no matter how much lipstick they apply.
Beyond the pale- great idea with the "Don't Tread On Me" flag. I will be picking one up this weekend!

Hawkins touched every base!
What I find most disgusting about Republican legislators is the way they keep bending backwards to appease Democrats and each time the Democrats will give them a shove so they fall on their butts!
Democrats are emboldened each time they do this and it has become a standard ritual.

Republicans lost their base by being such woosies. Why bother to give power to Republicans just to see the Democrats take it away like a school yard bully taking candy from a baby.

Republicans could quickly regain power simply by arresting the Democrats who are guilty of crimes.
It would be pointless because they would still bend backwards to appease Democrats.

So what is the point of voting for Republicans, electing a cheap immitation Democrat when we can elect the real thing?
Some Republicans are so Liberal they fool the Democrats.
http://www.bullwinkleblog.com/?p=3925

I agree
The GOP is the stupid party- I agree with that.

The democrats are treacherous in the way they go for wiping out Bush' appointments,: Wolfowitz, Scooter Libby, Gonzalez, Bolton, Rumsfeld. The republicans don't do when they have the power. They should be it with Feinstein and with Pelosi and with Murtha regarding ethics violations. If one party goes for the kill and the other party doesn't, who is left standing?

Conservatives give to charity. Democrats give to political parties so that their party wins and then reaches into our pockets to pay for their favored charitable causes.

The GOP is stupid and toothless and impotent.

And the way they are running their GOP debates is part of their stupidity.

Why vote for the GOP?
Why vote for the GOP when they have a proven track record of failure?
Most of them are just as bad as the Democrats. Putting the GOP back into power won't change anything - they will behave just as they did during their decade in control of Congress. Out-of-control borrowing and spending, general financial mismanagement, corruption, pork, refusal to address this countries problems, amnesty instead of law enforcement.
Vote for the Republican Party. Yeh, right!

STUPID REPUBLICANS
We know that a majority of the clear thinking people in this country are for lower taxes, border security, deportation of those here illegally, affordable health care, restricted spending on pork, and a strong defense. Most Americans say they are spiritual with 75% saying they are Christians. Most do not favor the killing of unborn children if you ask the question in that manner. Most of us think we have the right to own a gun for protection. Most agree with the fact that marriage is between a man and a woman, and the family unit is important to the well being of stable children who grow up to be productive citizens. We also know that there are other points of view and we respect that, so long as our values are upheld. We believe America is large enough for all kinds of people and all rights must be protected. Therefore we are conservative. The democrats dont care and have lost their soul. The Republicans have just lost their way. I dont think they are stupid, thats too strong a word. It's hard to understand why we have such poor leadership, but its indeed a fact.

SELLING OUT
I THINK BY NOW WE ALL CAN SEE JUST HOW MUCH YOUR CONGRESSIONAL AND LAME DUCK LEADERSHIP THINKS OF YOU AS A CITIZEN. IF THIS IMMIGRATION FIASCO AND FLAT OUT LIE DOES NOT CONVINCE YOU THEN THERE IS NO HOPE FOR YOUR KIND TO LIVE AMONG THOSE OF US WHO WERE BORN UNDER THE PROTECTION OF THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER AND HAVE SPENT OUR TIME AND GIVEN OUR BLOOD TO DEFEND AND PROTECT WHAT WE STAND FOR.

LADIES AND GENTS, TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, WITH ALL THE BILKING AND LYING OF THE ORDINARY AMERICAN THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, I CAN HONESTLY STATE THAT OUR GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP IS DOING ALL THEY CAN TO FOMENT SUCH INTENSE DISLIKE OF THEMSELVES THAT THE END ALL THEY MAY GET THEM WHAT THEY WANTED, A COMPLETE TURNOVER OF THIS COUNTRY'S ENTIRE SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT. ALL THAT IS LEFT TO QUESTION IS THE MEANS.

I agree
The GOP is the stupid party- I agree with that.

The democrats are treacherous in the way they go for wiping out Bush' appointments,: Wolfowitz, Scooter Libby, Gonzalez, Bolton, Rumsfeld."

How did the democrats get to Wolfowitz? Don'tt think their reach can go into the Worldbank, but you must think so. Scooter was prosecuted and convicted by a rightwing prosecuter appointed by the right. Bolton, rightly opposed by the democrats. Rummie, canned by Bush, though both right and left wanted him gone.

Bipartisanship
Hasn't everyone seen what Democrats mean by bipartisanship? They offer to hug an elephant and you are expected to . . .

And Bush did just that. At the start of his administration with NCLB and McCain-Feingold, and this week with the deal in the Senate.

TERM LIMITS
The inmates run the asylum. They set their own rules, priorities, and procedures. My only hope is to vote for someone who claims to represent me. Then this rep becomes part of the 'power elite'. He never thinks of us again.

I was distressed to see only 2 or 3 posters really understand how to correct this problem. TERM LIMITS. For EVERYONE. No one should be allowed to serve in congress more than two terms as a representative, one term as a senator (note the lack of capitalization of these terms; I mean the disrespect.)

Of course the power elite will never vote for term limits for themselves. That's why the Constitution allows for redress of grievance through the petition process. Instead of whining about our lack of leadership, voting for pigs in lipstick, let's get started on changing this untenable situation.

While we're at it, let's set up some better ground rules for congress:
1: No bill riders, or amendments that don't pertain directly to the subject of the bill.
2: Purpose and function of the Bill to be stated in 50 words or less; actuating language accomplished by regulation in the proper department.
3: Every bill MUST be acted on in committee in a timely manner; reject or accept. No tabling.
4: Funding bills must be straight forward; NO PORK. Let the state spend it's own money.
5: Line item VETO for the President. The Congress is responsible for providing the money; the President is responsible for how it is spent.

Finally, Hawkins, ANYONE who believes a vote is wasted is an IDIOT. Only NOT voting can be a wasted vote. LIBERTARIAN'S are currently what the Republican party claims to be. Also, I'm sick of hearing people say they want "..to make a statement, or send a message..." Half of our unenforced laws are on the books just to "...send a message." The message I get is it doesn't work. Send your messages directly, use Western Union and leave my laws alone.

Land in Costa Rica or Belize certainly looks good, and the governments are friendly because they think we'll bring money. But as an ex-green beret, I'll never let ANYONE force me to leave MY country. I may be buried GUN IN HAND, but I'll be buried HERE.

Ron
The Europeans wanted Wolfowitz out and call him a neocon. Ok Wrong term - not democrats - Leftists.

Wolfowitz asked to be excused from deciding his girlfriend's salary on the basis of potential conflict of interest and was told he wouldn't be excused. Then they got him.

The attack on Scooter was an attack on Karl Rove and on Cheney. That was started by the democrats. They couldn't get the big guys so they settled for someone lower on the totem pole. You have a weird view of reality.

Bolton is the best thing since sliced bread.

Republican Dilemma: To lease or sell...
I will not vote for any republican that votes for this immigration bill. Senator or congressman. NEVER!

I will campaign and then cast my vote for the republican opposition, regardless of them being a democrat. This will be my last act as a republican. I will then change my party affilation to independent. THERE WILL BE NO MORE MONEY OR LABOR GIVEN TO THOSE REPUBLICANS. INCLUDING THE RNC, RNCC or RNSC.

The republican party has leased their soul in the past to the devil, it appears they are about to sell it, from the appearance of this despicable immigration bill.

MyOpine
It's kind of like Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown. At some point you quit feeling sorry for him.

GunnyG
Yep, I too have contacted my senators, who regrettably are Boxer and Feinstein. But I told them to vote NO on McCain-Kennedy. I'm sure they are LTAO.

Next stop: the RNC. NO $$$ for anyone who votes for McCain-Kennedy.

I started caring about politics when I was 8, and wore a Nixon button to school. A long time, and I don't recall the GOP ever being so fractured, directionless, and out of steam.

I bet this though: you have probably never demonstrated on the Mall in DC. I know I haven't. Nor have most adults with jobs and responsibilities. Maybe the time has come. Maybe it's time for the falcons and hawks and condors to join the "eagles," and show the politicians something they haven't seen before: a mass gathering of really, really P.O.'ed middle-class adults.

Congrats on being banned from Wikistan, BTW. Let freedom ring!

I agree....
...the Republicans have become, in effect, "The Stupid Party" because they won't stand for any of their good ideas (limited govt, fiscal responsibility, protection of our Constitutional rights). But I'd add that they DO stand by some of their worst ideas, the main one being that the War in Iraq is honorable, winnable and shows guts. Most Americans don't see it that way.

Even if one believes The President went in with good intentions based on faulty intelligence, he promised "no nation-building", a promise he has clearly, unambiguously broken. And THAT is his fundamental mistake in Iraq. And why he's in such a mess now.

He cleared out Hussein and the Ba'athist regime. Good. The US Military is great at that sort of thing. Mission accomplished -- without apparently considering the power vacuum created in a volatile region of clashing religious sects, tribes and clans. There is no solution our military can impose that will erase this fact. Like it or not, it is a violent, authoritarian culture and not one worth the life of even a single American soldier. Thousands are dead; the longer we stay, the more will die. And the Republican party is backing the wrong horse. And it'll cost 'em.

And I disagree....
...with Hawkins' belief that not voting is better than voting Libertarian. A protest vote sends a message: I want something else rather than you. I've had it with Republican gutlessness and Democrat cluelessness.

And if your value system is in line with limited govt, sound money, a balanced budget, personal freedom and an end to interventionist foreign policy (we now have a military presence in 70% of the world's countries!), voting FOR your values by voting Libertarian, makes a lot of sense, even if the Republican party would like to think they still have you in their pocket after having sold out your (and their) values. Enough's enough.

Coalition-Building, Please
Okay, there are solutions to the problems Hawkins outlines. As I've argued on my blog -- and I hope you'll argue on yours -- we ALL need to be coalition-builders. If our "coalition" has three people, that's fine, as long as others are doing the same thing. We need to stop seeing our role as complaining about how mean the liberals are to us and start focusing on defeating those liberals. The national Republican committee (Senate and House) are not going to be great helps. They see their main function not as developing new talent but rather as protecting the Party's ancient clods. People like Mark Foley (before the scandal) never lack for financing. In any case, come visit me -- click on my name above -- and let's build some beautiful coalitions.

Prior to expressing an opinion on a sober subject like War, you should endeavor to learn something about it.
This should help.

Voting
These comments demonstrate why only 25% of the people that were of voting age voted in the last election. Throw out the independents, and neither the Republicans nor the Democrats got 10% of the people to take the time to go down to the polls and vote for them. That says it all. 85% of the French voted in the last election. You may not like their politics, but at least they get engaged and argue madly about it. And, 20 million of them, which represents 1/3 of the total population, watched the debate. Can you imagine 100 million Americans watching anything - other perhaps, than Hillary performing a striptease?

YOUR opinion!
First define"nada" You use it well in the lazy english slang. Perhaps you researched it in an English-Spanish Dictionary. How about corruption? Perhaps you can't handle Fienstien (CA)on the Ethics committee, no less. You write like the American journalist of Viet Nam. I only saw one news team from America. They ran at the first shot at Hoc Man, better known as Saberville, after we whipped the 7th NVA army remenants again in '68. You imply that you are a Republican, I doubt that. I smell a Tory, as yellow as a Democrat that states he supports our troops only if he doesn't have to go. That's what I got from your story. Sorry, I wasted my time reading it.

The End
I don't understand why the Republicans are such cowards. Democrats act more conservative during elections to get elected and for some reason republicans feel they need to behave more liberal once in office to get re-elected. I'm sick of both parties. I expect democrats to betray my values and principles but I don't expect to be betrayed by my own party. This amnesty bill will destroy our country. These people once citizens will vote democrat. This is a bad deal for America and a bad deal for republicans. It is depressing.

dovenator
Ann Coulter once wrote the following:

"Both parties run as conservatives. After they are elected Republicans sometimes double-cross their voters. Democrats always do."

I thought you might find this quote appealing.

Let us not forget.
Let us not forget that the GOP is the stupid party, but the dems are the dangerous party.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest !!!!
When I see the performance of president George Bush, and our Republican leadership and member's of congress I am reminded of Jack Nicholson in the movie " One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest " in the scene where he drove a bus load of mental paitents down to the dock to go on a fishing expedition.
They are selling our country out and do not seem sane enough to realize what they are doing.
This country is either done for, or headed for a revolution of some sort.
A corrupt congressman caught with $95,000.00 of bribe money in his home is walking free and helping to sell the country out and two Border Patrol Agents sit in prison for doing their jobs.
The elite of this country are well on their way to erasing the Middle Class, and then we will be right back to where our ancestor were in Europe with a Ruling Class, and the Peons.
I will admit I bought George W. Bush and his B.S. and voted for him but I won't make the same mistake again with any of the so called Republican Front Runners !!!

more blah blah blah
His article starts out great and fizzles back into beating the base for more money for a GOP that uses it to elect moderate to leftist Rinos and pink elephants.

After being a Life long republican I left the party in 04 for the constitution party. It may be going nowhere as he says, but at least I know I am not supprting a bunch of traitors to the constitution! Love the UN and the neo-marxian globalists all you want, I wont support them!

The Republicant party is dead after GW traitor Bush signs the Amnasty legislation into law. Good riddence! Witht he like of GW and Schwarzentraitor who needs another democratic party!

Just stumped!
I really and truly do not know what to do. How can we even "vote" for anyone when I we hear are 60 second soundbytes from individuals that know they won't be held responsible for what they say they are going to do in the first place (i.e. G.W. Bush).
We used to have the Federalist Papers, people that believed in the U.S. and its people. Now, most politicians believe the average American isn't capable of washing their hands after they use the bathroom without a law mandating such.
I just brought my son (18 months old) posters that explain the Bill of Rights. As I was reading them I almost started crying. We have NOTHING that our founding fathers wanted in a country - NOTHING.
We are subjects of the government and we don't even know it. They have lulled us into caring about American Idol and baseball games while we lost our soul as individuals.
When we tell people we are going to homeschool our children they are on the phone ready to call protective services - how in the world can parents be trusted to educate their kids they wonder.
Our life is legisltated from the time we are born until a week after we die!
Land of the Free - please, stop kidding yourself. Our government has made sure that none of us truly know what the Constitution said, how this country was supposed to work, and the true role of government.
I honestly don't know what to do.
I am stumped.
I don't want to give up on this country - but when you see the "Immigration Bill" I realize this isn't the country I thought I was living in after all.

Wiseone
You make some really interesting points about Islam's aggressive history, but I wonder if you've extrapolated a little too far. Are you saying then that it was inevitable that bin Laden would attack us, no matter what we had or hadn't done? If we hadn't supported Israel, meddled in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia et al then Muslims would have come after us simply because the Koran tells them to? Seems a little fatalistic to me, not to mention simplistic.

And I'm not sure where you are getting your dates from, but bin Laden didn't issue his first fatwa against America until 1996, not 1986. And how is supplying weapons and training to the forces bin Laden was involved with not "working with" bin Laden? The logic escapes me. As for the 9/11 Commission Report, its convenient to want to ignore it, but as far as I'm aware its credibility hasn't come under general condemnation.

RetMSgt
A few responses:

I'm not saying our presence in Saudi Arabia was "the" flash point for conflict in the ME, but I think the evidence shows it was at least "a" flash point in the current struggle. I simply cited SA and Iraq as two examples, not an exhaustive list of our adventures in the ME.

Agreed that we stayed in Saudi Arabia partly because they wanted us there and they were worried of attack from one of their neighbors. But was that the only reason we stayed? Simply a pure humanitarian desire to help? It seems unlikely in light of the fact that we have in the past stood by when countries have asked for our intervention or help (Former Yugoslav, Rwanda, and the Sudan to name a few). So what else was there that motivated us to stay? Oil perhaps (I know it sounds cliche). To Middle Easterners (and others) that may appear highly self-serving. Was it to maintain a strategic military establishment in the area so we could respond quickly to threats if necessary? Perhaps, but this also appears pretty self-serving.

If its oil, then perhaps we ought to seek ways to limit our need to unnecessarily intervene in foreign affairs by becoming less reliant. Expanded development here is an option (can you say ANWAR), or development of better alternatives (perhaps even government subsidized development?). If it was to obtain a militarily strategic position, well, I'm not sure there are better options available.

Final point, I think its safe to say that we can never eliminate extremists from this planet. I mean, even nuke-dropping probably couldn't pull this off. And hasn't it been shown that the conflict in Iraq has actually been helpful to the recruitment of additional terrorists? It seems to me that dealing with the problem in this way is a little counterproductive.

RINOs
I have long ago given up ANY $$ contribution to the GOP. The Senate has sold out the people!! To HELL with them all.

Ron Paul 08
If Ron Paul doesn't get the Repub nomination, I will either write-in his name or I will vote 3rd party. Probably Constitution Party.

Neocons have officially destroyed the Party.

Republicans are not the stupid Party, they are the extinguished party, unless they somehow return to Constitutional and more libertarian conservatism.

Bravado
The extrapolation you suggest is certainly possible. But I keep going back to bin Laden declaring war on us in 1986. This was a time when the Democrats in Congress were butting heads with Reagan over the use of the military. Their refusal to fund or authorize the mission forced Reagan to withdraw troops from Lebanon in 1983.

It was also a time when we were helping muslims in Afghanistan fight the infidel occupiers from Russia.

Clinton carried on a dialog contiuously with Arafat and got Israel to offer him 97% of what he wanted at Camp David one year. Why did Arafat refuse? Because the jihad is what motivates Islamic extremists, whether they're named Arafat, Khomeini, or bin Laden.

Am I sure that we would have been attacked on 9/11/01? No. But I am sure that bin Laden had declared war on us in 1986 and already carried out his war of terror with attacks in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2000. I refuse to blame our foreign policiy in the Middle East for the wild, outrageous, murderous behavior of radical extremists (although I am tempted to dump on Clinton).

Look at it from another prospective. Radical Islam has attacked the UK, Spain, and Russia. If we are going to blame ourselves, and not radical islam, for the attacks of 9/11, who gets the blame for Madrid, Bali, London, and Beslan?

Repubs stupid?
How can you say they are stupid. With careful planning, attention to detail and planned sound bytes, they have reduced their membership to 25% with only 11% of "others" that "lean" toward the Republican party.

You can't possibly lose that much power in elections without some very "intelligent" planning.

Duncan Hunters statement
HUNTER EXPRESSES “FIERCE DISAPPOINTMENT” OVER SENATE AMNESTY PROPOSAL

I vow to oppose this legislation supported by Senators Edward Kennedy and John McCain. It provides a vast new immigration benefit to millions of illegal aliens who have broken our laws to live in the United States.I opposed the 1986 amnesty act because of this same reason. It proved to be the draw that we predicted it would be.I am deeply disappointed to see history repeating itself.

This package will confirm to the world that the U.S. does not really mean what it says when it comes to immigration enforcement. As a result of the citizenship benefit included in this legislation, despite the fine print, we will see a stampede across our borders.

This vast new amnesty and expansive guest worker program will surely be ridden with fraud and abuse, and ultimately lead to millions of public-assistance-dependent immigrants.

The Senate’s decision to blatantly ignore the Secure Fence Act signed into law last year and only require construction of 370 miles of fence, as opposed to the 854 miles mandated by the law, is a dramatic failure of this legislation. The San Diego border fence has proven that fencing works. The time has come to quickly implement the Secure Fence Act, not retreat from its mandates.

I believe that this package will result in lower wages for America’s already-struggling families by encouraging the importation of cheap foreign labor rather than investing, developing and growing a domestic workforce that will sustain our economy far into the future.

Amnesty is not the answer.Border enforcement must be first and it must be comprehensive. To do otherwise is to repeat the mistakes of the past. This Senate bill is bad for Americans, bad for our workers, bad for law enforcement and, most importantly, bad for national security.I will fight it.Please join with me.

What if Duncan Hunter is the GOP nominee? You
can't look at his record and positions and say
he's not a true conservative.

Give up on Paul; he's the one candidate who is
100% certain not to be nominated, due to his
fatuous position on global jihadists.

Why not support a man like Hunter? It's way too
early to despair, and just watch while Hillary
trounces some RINO.

Again: Check out Hunter's record and see if he's
a man any conservative could vote for. No "nose-

I called them both!
I am in GA and I called both offices today. Luckily, Chambliss line was busy (DC office and ATL office) for a lot of the time - so that was a good sign.

Our Gov. passed a bill saying illegals could no longer get many services, etc.

Would this bill override state bills!

On this topic,
see how a President's legacy,
history, the war and illegals all tie together, and how it should inform our opinions on the candidates.

How about Ron Paul?
I understand he was the winner of the FOX straw poll. He is more libertarian than conservative. Msybe it's time to listen carefully to what the Libertarians have to offer.

Take our country back
Millions of illegals in our country, thousands more each day. Some of which, don't want jobs, they just want to hurt us and our country. [ref. three of the ft. Dix terrorest]

Democrats are on their side, from the leaders to the uneducated bottom of the cest pool, they want to see America loose. When do we stand up and take what is ours back? This is not what our forefathers had in mind. It's what they fought against.

Liberals trying to muddy the water and weak republicans are standing with them helping, just to convince them "hey we can be friends". BS!!!This may hurt but if conservative's don't stand up for our rights and purge ourselves of weak leaders this once great country will fall and your children or grandchildren will be muslim.

At last the truth
Finally--someone has enough guts to tell it like it is--the REPUBLICANS ARE THE STUPID PARTY!!!! I couldn't agree more-- during one recent debate, for example, three Republican presidential wannabees actually admitted they didn't believe in evolution and the rest (including social liberal Rudy Guliani) said they'd happily vote for judges that would overturn Roe v Wade (translation: Republicans to American women: Drop Dead. You're too stupid to make important decisions concerning your health and it's your fault that you got knocked up in the first place). Anyhow the current crop of so-called Republican candidates is just too awful for words, except for Ron Paul who dared tell to truth about 9/11 and Iraq only to be shot down by that bully Rudy Guliani who threw a major hissy fit.

And if you need further proof that Republicans are the stupid party, you need look no further than the current occupant in the White House.

Break-up the RINO ring in the GOP
John is right about the right not having the guts to oppose the Dems and push for convicting corrupt liberals instead of giving them a pass.

Also what is crushing the GOP are RINO's like John McCain, Olympia Snowe who constantly and ignorantly side with liberals and call it a bi-partisan effort. Caving in to liberal ideals and calling it a bi-partisan backed issue pisses me off more than anything. And I know, as Snowe is my Senator.
Olympia Snowe makes me so mad I will not vote for her in her next election even though the only alternative here is a true blue liberal who is not hiding under the big (R). Which means I will not get to vote, because, while I won't vote for her liberal opponent she will not get my vote.
People like her and McCain drive people to vote third alternative. We want conservatives to stick to there guns and not put up with the crap on the left.

Go Fred Thompson Newt Gingrich!

Ron Paul is out, another RINO
He will be another snake in the grass like McCain who will cave and roll over with the next wave of liberal idiocy.

SNOWE"S GOT TO GO!!!

They just don't Get It
Back in the mid 90s when the GOP took control of Congress, one common explanation surfacing from the not-so-silent majority about the Dem's loss was "they just don't get it", referring to the Dem's arrogance. It must be a virus that has infected the so-called GOP leadership.

Hmmm, perhaps leadership is the wrong term for those in charge of the GOP right now -- the current group in charge are acting more like anchors who think power is measured by how much lobbyist money they can pile upon themselves...

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE JACK SHEPARD’S PLAN FOR IRAQ AFTER THE PRESENT SURGE OF AMERICAN SOLDIER IS COMPLETED IS FOR A MAJOR AMERICAN TROOP REDEPLOYMENT INTO 4 SAFE STAGING AREAS IN IRAQ.

After the present surge of American soldiers is completed; I think there is a good chance to have a significant number of troops returning home when I am President.

Then the remaining American Troops should be redeployed to more secure bases to be used as a rapid strike force in support of the Iraqi military and the Iraqi police when the Iraqi Government will call for our help in limited joint actions. I have been on record as advising against a 100% return home of all of our soldiers in the after this present surge is completed it would unthinkable if you think about it in detail.

I know as a soldier that for several years we must have a small limited number of American troop remain in Iraq to be concentrated in bases that we already have; and be working only as quick reaction troops that could be called in by the Iraqi Government to aid in specific actions of our choice.

If we lose Iraq to the insurgents the reality of it like it or not, this is not Vietnam, the Vietnamese were never a threat to America or our allies. Iraq controlled by terrorists would be lethal for our allies in the Middle East.

The truth must be understood if these insurgents gain control of the Iraq Government, they will use Iraq as a staging area to attack and maybe gain control of our allies in the Middle East; Israel, Jordan, Egypt and
Afghanistan

Like it or not we have a long term commitment to stay in Iraq. Even if we are seldom called upon to fight the Iraqi insurgents. We must remain in the background as a massive and lethal threat to guarantee 100%
against the formation of a terrorist state out of Iraq if the insurgence wins. This is nothing about a civil war, it is at this point simple about keep the control of Iraq out of the hands of terrorists.

The redeployment of our troops to relatively safe areas is so very important, even if we are very seldom use to fight in support of the Iraqi troops.

Our continued presence in remote staging areas is necessary to guarantee that the insurgence will never win control of Iraq creating a safe haven for terrorism in the heart of the Middle East with the income from billions of dollars of oil to finance their war of terrorism against America.

My planned major redeployment of American troops would get the major part of our troop off the streets. That I think would not only be safer but very much smarter because the less the Iraqi people see of our troops the more the Iraqi government can work to cool tensions between the Sunni’s and the Shiites.

After a careful study of Iraq I am proposing when the present surge of American troops is completed that
remaining America troops must be move and centred in 4 staging areas to be used as rapid responders in
immediate support of the Iraqi Police Force and Iraqi Military who will almost immediately take over all
contact and ground work with the Iraqi population.

No longer will our American troops be the target of Foreign Arab fighters, snipers and suicide bombers who presently are rushing to Iraq to kill an American.

No longer will our American troops be routinely walking the streets of Baghdad or any other city as easy
targets for any sniper driving by or any suicide bomber driving around.

When we are called and decide to be deployed to support the Iraqi troop it will be for a quick hit and run attack with a lightening speed; where the insurgents will no even know what hit them. We will shift to an
overwhelming use of force concentration in a specific small concentrated area to gain the maximum effect.
Never again will our troops be walking around like sitting ducks.

These four major staging areas in Iraq are:

Staging Area #1- Baghdad’s International Airport

Staging Area #2- Tallil AB- near Al-Nasiriyah in the South

Staging Area #3- H-1 an airstrip in the western desert

Staging Area #4- Bashur Airfield is located in Central Iraq approximately 356 kilometers North of Baghdad, & 50 kilometers Northeast of Erbil. Even though it appears as a small civilian airport we have reinforced it’s 6,700 foot long single runway.

I am advising that American troops will be not walking the street in any regular pattern. I repeat; First this
will place our troops into a much safer situation, and Second because of my redeployment plan it will create a situation where our American troops will suffer very much fewer causality but they will be available at a
moments notice to support the Iraqi troops.

We are still in Iraq, we prevent a mass civil war in the Middle East Region and we have much less causalities. This is a major shift in present policy, but I am advising that presently this is the only way to proceed in Iraq after the present surge of American Soldiers have completed their mission immediately.

If elected the next President of the United States in 2008 if my planned redeployment of our American troops fighting Iraq has not been implemented I promise to immediately implement it.

My plan will greatly reducing the causalities of our brave American troops still fighting in Iraq but still protect us and our allies in the Middle East from a most lethal Iraq controlled by terrorists.

To say that providing weapons and training is not "working with" is splitting hairs. Our CIA was involved,to deny that and to refuse to even think and talk about how our own actions might have contibuted to our vulnerability is naive to the point of recklessness. To just blame it on liberals is absurd. Remember the 241 marines killed in Lebanon in 83 ? Did the Republican administration stand up to them? Not really we ended up withdrawing US troops from Lebanon. The begnning of the Terrorists saying the US retreats when attacked.Failing to look at the whole of US foreign policy , just thinking one party is responsible for the kind of mistakes made by both ,causes distorted analysis, and that leads to poorly planned actions. The curren Iraq debacle seems to be a case in point.

Think a fence won't work?
Try building it like the one in Jurassic Park: you know, the one that was about 50 feet high with enough voltage to light up Cleveland at Christmas?

And here's another thought: let's write a law that says that anyone who came here without permission is permanently disqualified for American citizenship.

And how about this: steal someone's identity or use a bogus ID card, and you are sentenced to five years hard labor... building the above mentioned fence. After which, you will be tossed over said fence onto your ear.

good up to a point
You should have quit while you were ahead. Casting a vote for the Libertarian party isn't a protest vote - it's a vote for good government. Republicans are terrible representatives. Democrats are worse. If you want terrible government, or worse, then vote for Republicans or Democrats.

If you want good government, you have to vote for good government. We cannot get good government by voting for terrible representatives.

Vote third party.

dems
With Florida having given the vote to former convicts and with the surge of illegals getting citizenship, this may be the end of the republican party and the beginning of a one party system with the narcissistic democratic party that believes it is entitled to power, leadership, all the money its corrupt little hands can get, the end of democracy, and the democrats becoming the undemocrats. I know Bush is trying to be nice to the illegals hoping that they won't all vote as a block for the dems, but the dems have maneuvered the repubs into a lose lose position like a chess match where wherever the repubs move they lose. If they don't give the country to the Hispanics the Hispanics will hold it against them for generations and if they do then they have given the country to the Hispanics and the dems. Not that Bush cares since he's a Rino.
Now they are starting up the nonsense about Fred Thompson. "He should get the presidency because he doesn't really care if he gets it or not." They said the same thing about Bush and look what we got. I'm not going to fall for that line again and no Fred is not another Reagan just because he got an acting job.

GOP
Why is the media pushing McCain and Giuliani at us as being ahead in the polls?? the only thing i can figure is that they want to have us put in someone who hasn,t a chance against the liberals.Neither one will get my vote and i have been a republican conservative for 50 years!! Dont give me that hogwash about partison politics you had better turn into what you are McCain a buddy of the extreme liberal democrats!! Thanks you roe allowing me my views. Len

Excellent article.
Bang on with all the points.
Firing on all cylinders.

Conservatives need to recognize one thing: You're voice is as loud as you make it.

Ever since I was in high school the naivete of the Republican leadership has been nothing short of astounding. So, we have a leadership problem, but we also have a followership problem.

Whenever we do get inspired leadership, such as from Newt Gingrich when he was our leader in the House, we let the Enemy pound him to the matt why we stand by and watch. For cyring out loud, we let Robert Bork get taken down!

We need people to do more than just post comments on conservative blogs. It's time to take some action.
