5 Things Republicans Can Learn From The Democrats

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

1) Respect The Base: The first rule of politics is, "take care of your base." That doesn't mean you give your supporters everything they want, but if your base isn't happy, you're going to have a rough time. Why? Because they're the people who donate money, volunteer to help candidates, talk you up to their friends, defend you when you're under attack, and, when they're happy at least, they’ll crawl over broken glass to come out and vote for you.

Democrats bend over backwards to make their supporters happy. They pay an enormous amount of attention to what their activists have to say, are constantly doing things to try to make them happy, and even though they can't always give them what they want, they go to great lengths to please them.

But, the Republicans in DC? Most of them treat their biggest supporters with polite indifference at best and contempt at worst. On issues of great import to conservatives like fiscal conservatism, illegal immigration, and judges (See the nomination of Harriet Miers for a perfect example of this), the DC GOP have gone out of their way to kick their own biggest supporters in the teeth. Because of that, the base hasn't been happy with the Republican Party since early 2005 and quite frankly, unless some significant changes are made, there’s probably not going to be an about face any time soon.

2) Stay Out Of The Primaries: One of the most aggravating things about the 2006 election was the Republican Party’s involvement in the primaries.

The worst example of this was the National Republican Senatorial Committee's insistence on supporting Lincoln Chafee, a left of center Republican who didn't vote for George Bush in 2004, in a tough Rhode Island primary against Steven Laffey. What was the result of that brilliant maneuver? The NRSC lagged far behind their Democratic counterparts in fund raising because conservatives withheld their donations in retaliation and in the end, Chafee still lost. This isn't the only Republican Party screw-up of this sort either. Look at the Arlen Specter vs. Pat Toomey battle in 2004 and the Randy Graf vs. Steve Huffman race in 2006. In each case, the party's interference came back and bit them hard in the behind.

Unlike the Republicans, the Democrats are generally smart enough to stay out of primaries because they understand that if they get involved, they will inevitably be fighting against their own base to help someone who's probably not much of an asset in getting their agenda through. This is part of the reason that Democrats in Congress are much more disciplined than Republicans, because the Democrats can't thumb their noses at their biggest supporters and then expect the party to come running to save them when they get a primary challenge.

3) Sometimes, It is the Thought That Counts: Rich Lowry once said that, "(Bill) Clinton was in favor of small, popular things. Bush apparently likes to be in favor of big, unpopular things."

This is another area where the Democrats are smarter than the Republicans. The Dems are constantly doing small things to show their base that their hearts are in the right place. It's these little gestures, sometimes even throwaway lines in speeches that help keep their base happy, even when the left isn't getting everything they want.

Republicans in general, and Bush in particular, are terrible at this. They seem to be of the opinion that they can mention Reagan a few times, make a few pleasing noises towards social conservatives, and everything will be fine. But often, it's the little things that end up killing the GOP instead of helping them. When Republicans who claim to be fiscal conservatives vote for a monstrosity like the Bridge to Nowhere or when Bush goes to South America and starts talking about how he will help them out by rewriting our immigration laws, it sends a loud and clear signal that is far out of proportion to the actual significance of the event. Democrats understand this. Most Republicans on Capitol Hill do not.

4) Hang Together Instead Of Hanging Separately: Liberals in the blogosphere have a reputation for being good at organizing and raising money for elections. It's well deserved and I can tell you that from experience, because last election cycle, I started a grassroots conservative group called Rightroots to raise money in the blogosphere. We raised around $300,000 from the right side of the blogosphere in about 3 months which may sound like a lot, but it's chicken scratch when it's spread over 20+ candidates. During that same time period, liberal bloggers raised millions and blew our doors off.

Know why? Simple. The liberal bloggers didn't have a problem with trying to raise money for candidates that they support while a lot of people on the right did. Don't get me wrong, the left side of the blogosphere is a lot bigger than the right side of the blogosphere, but Rightroots reached out to almost all of the big conservative websites and radio talk show hosts. A few agreed to help out, but most didn't.

Why not? "We don't do that." "That’s not what we are about." "We’re just not interested," etc., etc., etc. Well, here's the reality. The left does do that. Maybe their website isn't "about that," but they did it anyway. Maybe they weren't all that interested in raising money for candidates, but they took the time to do it when members of the conservative grassroots online wouldn't do the same thing.

The conservative grassroots could be much stronger and more vibrant than our opponents across the aisle in every way, but we don't work together. Most of the big talk radio hosts and magazines treat conservative bloggers like lepers and almost nobody wants to help the GOP raise money to win elections. The potential there is enormous, but we're behind the left because they're much more willing to try to push the movement as a whole forward than most of us on the right.

5) Attack, Attack, Attack! We might as well change the Republican Party symbol from an elephant to a punching bag because the Republican wimps in DC just refuse to fight back. The base may have no qualms about going after liberals, but when we look for Republican pols on the Hill to show some leadership in this area, we're almost always sadly disappointed.

Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy treat politics like a street fight in an alley. They wrap a chain around their fist, grab a broken bottle with the other hand, and then aim for the eyes and the throat. Meanwhile, George Bush and Company are wearing boxing gloves stuffed with extra foam and try not to hit anybody too hard for fear of making them mad. The Bushies aren't afraid to go after terrorists, but when Ted Kennedy or Hillary Clinton attacks, they tremble like John Edwards after he runs out of mousse.

C'mon, guys, you don't have to start comparing Howard Dean to Hitler or anything, but how about showing a little moxie instead of cringing, apologizing, and rolling over like French poodles every time the Democrats go after someone? You Republicans on the Hill: the Democrats have spent the last 2 years smacking you in the mouth, taking your lunch money, and pushing you down while you keep hoping people will give you brownie points for being "nice" and "bipartisan." At what point does it dawn on you guys that it's time to go after the Democrats as hard as they're going after you?

This column is excellent!
Not one single thing in it with which I disagree.

As a matter of fact, he makes a lot of the same points that I'm always trying to drive home. Judging by the flack I always take, I imagine he's in for a lambasting.

Frankly, I don't think he takes it far enough, but I've written plenty about that on other columns and my blog, as well as the blogs of others.

Great column, Hawkins. Now, grab your flak jacket!

Here Here
I agree with just about everything in this column. I hope Mr. Hawkins has sent this column to the Republican leadership.

That's why I'm a conservative...
...and not a Republican.

Beltway Republicans are more concerned with being liked by the media that they are afraid to take a stand that might get them negative press. They talk a big game and get elected, then when they get to DC, it's all about becoming a player among the hoi polloi. The bourgeosie constituency back home is irrelevant to how many cool parties they get invited to and how many pals among the media they make. Then they're stunned when that media pal skewers them. Republicans in Congress make me sick. And I go to the mat daily for President Bush, but it bugs me that he also refuses to fight back. I understand being above the petty stuff, but sometimes you have to go into the alley and fight the jerks, or at least give them a taste of their own medicine.

While I don't agree
While I don't agree with everything Bush has done while in office, especially in the realm of immigration; we had in this administration the opportunity to get many of the fiscally conservative policies that most of us would like to see enacted. My frustration is with a congress that was too busy trying to get reelected than to listen to the base. We could have had the tax cuts made permanent, social security somewhat reformed, government sized down and made more effective, but the cowards in the congress were too busy passing "bridges to nowhere".

The Left is beating us at their game. We are now staring down the barrel of a Hillary or Obama presidency; a leftist congress; which will mean left leaning supreme court justices. You can bet hell to high water that there agenda (the one they won't tell the American people about) will be enacted if this happens.

It must be in the water
There must be a liberalism virus in the DC water supply. Years ago, I observed that the biggest difference between the political parties is that the Republicans think that politics is a contest in which observing the rules and like Rodney King asked "Why can't we just get along?" while Democrats say "f*ck the rules, we play to win." For too long, while the Reps were in the minority, they acted like the house n***ers that Rice and Thomas are accused of being. In 94 we became the majority party that acted like it was still the minority and the MSM treated the Dems like they were the majority. From 04 thru 06, compare the face time on camera from the MSM given to Ried & Pelosi vs that given to Frist & Hastert and draw your own conclusions.

I stopped supporting Bush...
...many months ago.I figure if he won't support himself, why should I support him?I keep getting the same answer:The other side is worse! At some point you have to stop voting against someone and start voting for someone, even if they lose. When you hold your nose to vote,be prepared to hold your nose in the next election, and the next, and the next, etc.

We have to recognize that George Bush is a very poor leader and a very poor politician.Yes,he can get elected, but once elected he has no sense of the jugular and no sense of the bully pulpit. He hasn't a clue about how to reward his friends and how to punish his enemies.

So as far as I am concerned he is on his own and can go defend himself.

GOP Fears Liberal Press

.....The GOP look like wimps because they are afraid of a Liberal Press which protects the Dems and villifies them ...

.....the examples are endless ...Plame and hubby are treated like rock stars while Libby is excoriated and Burger gets a pass ...

.....Reno gets a pass for incinerating women and children at Waco ...while Gonzales has his head on the block for firing attorneys ...

....Gingrich tries to cut the budget ...Clinton vetos it then blames Gingrich for shutting down the government ...the press runs with it ...Newt becomes "The Grinch who stole Christmas" and is run out of town on a rail...

.....As long as the Liberal Press protects the Dems and attacks the GOP ...then the GOP has to suck hind teat .....COLOSSUS

Nam:
My sentiments exactly, buddy. The lesser of two evils is still evil. I stayed home in 2000 because I saw this coming. "Compassionate Conservative"? That means he's compassionate to everyone that didn't vote for him. I knew it then, and I know it now.

When Bush took office, there was a chain e-mail with the "dream" inauguration address, a piece of fiction making Bush look like a Reaganesque cowboy. I read it and found humor in it, and I thought "if only".

Bush has been a huge disappointment, mainly for not defending himself or catering to his base. Couple that with the amount of times he's reached across the aisle, only to get his hand bitten. You'd think he'd tire of the rabies shots by now, but he hasn't. And, you know, there's an old saying in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably Tennessee, that says fool me once, shame on, shame on you, you fool me can't get fooled again.

...My frustration is with a congress that was too busy trying to get reelected than to listen to the base. ...

Trying to get elected by whom?? The Democrats?

Kissing up to the media and the Left is NOT going to win any elections for a conservative.

... and look what it got them.

The Problem Is The Mass Man

As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

In order to get elected to damned near ANY office in this country, you have to pander to the "Moderate Ignorati." Or, if not that, you have to be incredibly adept and charismatic like Reagan (combined with running against a loser like Jimmy Carter.)

The difference between Democrats and Republicans nowadays? Being Socialist/Communist, Democrats like to organize and, well, socialize. Republicans tend to mind their own business and don't do as well with groups.

The solution? Bust the NEA and wait fifty years.

John Hawkins Article
John, great article. Esp. about # 5. I'm so sick of Bush smiling & playing nice with these democratic traitors. I hope we can elect a president who shows a little more backbone when faced with the slow but sure destruction of our country.
Hope Bob is recovering from his operation. Ann said he was in some pain the day after. Hope to see him in early April.
Best of luck to you & keep up the good work.

Great column
But it is often the guy who strikes back that get caught. The Republicans need to do a better job educating the public and exposing the liberal biased. It just takes one person with a spine to stand up, take a few shots and then not fire back, but rather examine the punches.
Last thing we want to do is get into a pissing match with dems. We need to be the party of character that requires a spine and the ability to stand up. Not sure who is capable but i would love for somone to take Pelosi to task about what she said vrs what she has done.
She has no respect for the president so why should any one have respect for her.

5 Things Republicans can learn....
Great column. I have been encouraging my Congressman for years to get some guts in standing-up to the Dems. The Republicans should forget all of the niceties in following rules of behaviour. I just couldn't bring myself to call anyone Honorable so an so, especially when I know them to be otherwise. The Republicans need to become so blunt that the Dems start whining about it. They are great whiners to begin with, so take advantage of it by serving up some stinky cheese.

We had
Both houses of congress, the presidency, new conservative supreme court appointees ---- and we got ---- ZIP!!!!!

Nice job!

It's like having Clinton 1 in the oval office but with no polling data to go on.

The war on American traitors was lost with a wimper.

4 more things
6. Accept the fact that some people are not on your side, & will never like you, agree with you, or vote for you. Don't waste time, effort, & political capital on them. The Demmies know who their adversaries are. They know who they're buying off, & they know who they're shafting. They have no problem attacking those they characterize as their 'enemies,' or those from whom they intend to confiscate the wherewithal for Big Sugar Daddy Pork Barrel Welfare State.
The Repubs OTOH have a HUGE problem with this. They blow off their base & alleged principles to chase after some "moderates" or to keep from being called "partisan" or "meanspirited" or some other nasty name. They try to please "everybody," even the mainstream leftist Democratic leadership itself, so it's no wonder they come off as feckless, spineless, and devoid of principle.
Particularly, be aware that the 'mainstream' pop media is hostile to you. You must deal with them as you would a hostile adversary, instead of trying to kiss-up. The pop media is only going to favorably cover leftists, pseudo-"centrists" that are really crypto-leftists, and "maverick" Republicans who can be encouraged to destroy the party and frustrate any conservative agenda.

7. Figure out what you actually stand for. It's kinda hard to demonstrate backbone if you don't stand up for anything. It's hard to get on-message if you can't figure out what the message is. Along this line, I have a news flash for you: the position of mainstream socialist left is already taken. That's the Democrats' position. They own it. The only possible relevance the Repubs could have is to stand for the converse proposition of individual rights, limited government, low taxes, & etc. It's wide open, all you need to do is claim it, already. Like the lefties say: If you won't stand for anything, you'll fall for anything.
The Demmies know what their agenda is. They may not talk about it publicly, they usually lie about it, but everything they do is predicated upon advancing it. The GOP can't seem to define or stick to principles, much less an agenda for implementing them.

8. Grow a brain. Quit falling for emotional propaganda and bandwagons. Stop using the left's language and acknowledging their bankrupt presumptions and worldview. Start engaging arguments on an intellectual level when you must argue.
Challenge false presumptions instead of buying into them. Learn what these "moderates" and "centrists" actually are: apathetic or uninformed undecideds, if not crypto-lefties or even phantoms, who are not going to be interested by some kind of watered-down liberalism, as party apparachiks seem to persistently believe.
Don't dumb yourself down and try to condescend to your base. Conservatism is for thinkers rather than feelers. Treat your audience like intelligent, literate, informed people.
Most of all, learn to recognize leftist tactics and strategies when they are unveiled, and respond to them as such. Quit drinking their poisoned Kool-Aid!

9. Once you've defined what your principles are, walk the walk, & talk the talk. Start collecting everybody onto the reservation. Take in the seams on the big tent a bit. It's past time for some "mavericks" and outright lefties to go flying out of it with bootmarks on their rumps. A conservative GOP has no use for the likes of McCain, Snowe, Chafee, Specter, and the rest of the RINO herd that has been a fifth column in the GOP. You've already lost the majority in Congress, so get over it & quit pandering and dithering for fear of losing majority status. Since you're the minority now anyway, learn the lesson of Gideon's Army & prepare yourself to be effective at the political position you've staked out.

If you're a Republican elected official, & leftist socialism is where your heart is, be honest & go join the Democrats. I honestly think most of these RINOs are where they are because the Demmies have an incumbent, or somebody even further to the left, to nominate for that seat.

If the GOP is going to be Democrat Lite trying to stake out a "moderate" position nobody really wants, it can deservedly go the way of the Whigs and the Federalists.

Republicants
I agree with John Hawkins article down to the letter and I've made most of the same statements over the years to anyone who will listen. Unfortunatley, most of those we've elected either were not what they claimed to be, or more probably became corrupted with the stench that emanates from DC.
There is no difference between a Republican or Democrat politician except that the Democrats, for the most part bind themselves together like a Mafiosa family. Whereas, the Republicans act like they all have their own agenda and tend to eat their young, out of fear of losing their personal power. In short, they are all whores but the Democrats don't care who knows it and in fact, will even flaunt it. They know who they have in their pocket or who they have dirt on and as such act with abandonment because they know there won't be any recriminations for their actions.
Until the Republicans get their heads out of their collective a**es and start employing bare knuckle tactics they will be subjegated to the back bench for a long time to come. There are a handfull of good senators and congressman in our party (I refer to them as "The Young Turks") who need to join forces to buck the tide of the same old worn out tactics taken by the dinosaurs and RINOs that overflow our party.
Ex: Specter,Stevens(AK),Collins,Snowe,Sununu,
Warner,Shays,Paul,etc.
If they are unsuccessfull in turning the tide, then the only other option is a third party, which is an idea long overdue. Also, term limits has to be a hinge pin for any hope of saving this country. No more career politicians should be the war cry.
Republicans, change your ways, or observe the game from the cheap seats for many decades to come.

A great example of 1 and 3....
A great example of point 1 and 3 is the way the Democrats fight against Republican SCOTUS nominations. I don't agree with the standard the Democrats have for judges, but atleast they fight for what they believe in. What did the Republicans do with Clinton's 2 SCOTUS nominations of 2 very liberal crack-pots? They rubber-stamped them. Freaking cowards!

Link for Ginsburg's nomination vote
Link for Ginsburg's nomination vote in the Senate:

Link for Ginsburg's nomination vote

Only 3 Republicans had the basic common sense to vote Nay. This woman worked for the ACLU! She thought prostitution should be legal!

And Stephen Breyer's nomination vote....
Link:

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=103&session=2&vote=00242

Only 9 Republicans showed any backbone and voted against this liberal idiot to the high court in the land.

Who would the Dems have to nominate to get the Republicans to actually fight the nomination?

Keep in mind....
Keep in mind this is after the Dems Borked a Republican nomination and fought like crazy against Clarence Thomas. Republicans should have been playing mean just because of that. Instead they fold like little old ladies playing 3/6 Hold'em at the Casino!

Excellent Article
This article should be sent to every Republican in Washington, DC.

Writes what we've all been saying
Think ANY politicos will be reading it?

Or the comments, esp. Don't Tread On Me...

Nope, don't think so.

TIME FOR THAT THIRD PARTY!

What would happen is we ALL quit
being Republicans, and joined the (Libetarians, or something else)?

Has anyone noticed the
softball questions Valerie Plame got from the few Repubs at the hearing today? They had her under oath and could have go either some real info or a real perjury charge.

The Repubs are spineless.

Why I no longer vote
Great choices I have to choose from: traitors or cowards; socialism NOW! or socialism tomorrow morning; an open border or an undefended border.

There is no real difference, other than the traitors are at least willing to fight.

If Thompson runs, I might actually find reason to go to the polls again, although - living in the People's Republic of California - it would still be a wasted vote.

Confusion
John confuses Republicans with Conservatives. Conservatives like me happen to vote under the R banner because we certainly won't vote under the D banner. In many cases, the Conservatives sat out the last election because the Republicans failed to support immigration reform, less government, and lower taxes.

Vic also mentions the softball questions from the MINORITY party regarding the Plame affair. In fact, very few of the MINORITY party bothered to attend. They should have come out in force and used their time to show this for the sham that it is.

If the MINORITY party actually showed some semblance of support for Conservatives, then we would gladly "hang together" and donate a bit of cash.

I'm going to echo Brian.
This is a slam dunk column and it deserved more viewers.

Republicans
I think Republicans have already learned too much from Democrats.

Bush calls Ted Kennedy one of the best?

I heard President Bush’s news conference in Mexico when he said Ted Kennedy was “one of the best legislators in Congress” He then used the FAILED WATEFULL BIG GOVERNMENT program No Child Left Behind as his example of what they have accomplished together. Bush made it clear Ted Kennedy was his point man on his Amnesty Immigration bill that will allow unlimited cheap labor for big campaign donors. Do you think Bush is the most liberal spending President ever? How will history treat his open border immigration policy?

NPR-What dominated the talks between Mr. Bush and Calderon was immigration. After five and a half years in office, Mr. Bush said he’s still fighting for a guest-worker plan that would help Mexicans who are in the U.S. illegally to obtain working status.

Still, Mr. Bush offered no guarantees to Calderon. He noted that Congress is now controlled by Democrats, and that Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) will now be leading the way for a Senate bill. In fact, Mr. Bush shifted some of the burden Kennedy’s way.

“Senator Kennedy is one of the best legislative senators there is. He can get the job done,” Mr. Bush said.

One more
10. Fight for necessary legislation, even if there aren't enough votes to pass. Why? Because if you don't fight for thr voters, they won't fight for you. Look at what the Bushes accomplished by pandering to Democrat fiscal policy. One sentenced himself to a one-term presidency, one (with help from co-panderers in Congress) gave Congress to the Democrats.

Who's on first?

If you want to know who the hardcore players on the Left are, who their donors and what organizations are most significant, look up: "discoverthenetworks.org". Or try Google and enter "Discover the Networks" and click on their web site.

This is right on.
This is the type of article that needs to be out there. The Republicans have cowered so much to the left and I'm not sure why. I don't know if Bush is trying to "turn the other cheek" to live out his faith, or if Karl Rove is trying to soften the hard-nosed image of the party.

But it's costing the Republicans and conservatives dearly. Democrats are brazen, vicious, and relentless. Bush's Justice Department lets Sandy Berger off by just sending him to bed early and giving William Jefferson caught with $90,000 a pass! My senator, Liddy Dole is as quiet as a church mouse. I want to hear congress firing back with both barrels at Kennedy, Pelosi, Durban, Boxer, Murtha and others for these outrageous statements that for one thing, make it harder for our troops to do their job.

I'm also getting the sense that our system of justice is increasingly controlled by the left. Ann Coulter's passage about the crime of being a Republican seems to describe recent events.
Non-crimes seem to magically become real crimes with certain prosecutors.

Neoconservatism’s deadly influence
This is the best article I have read to describe what the Neoconservative agenda is about. Do you think they have destroyed the conservative movement? Do you think this is why NEOCON President Bush has expanded governement more than any other in our history?

FREELIBERTY-Neoconservatism’s most prominent adherent wants it to be linked to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal socialism and, because of its rejection of “isolationism,” to be further identified as a champion of meddling in the affairs of other nations. The opposite of isolationism, of course, is interventionism, a tactic favored by all neoconservatives. Earlier, in 1983, Kristol claimed that “a conservative welfare state is perfectly consistent with the neoconservative perspective.” Old-line conservatives would justly label the phrase “conservative welfare state” a classic oxymoron. By 1993, in a piece he authored for the Wall Street Journal, the Godfather lauded Social Security, Medicare, food stamps, and Medicaid, even a cash allowance for the children of unwed mothers. Virtually any socialist program can count on support from the neoconservative camp.

As for interventionist meddling, neoconservative Charles Krauthammer candidly presented the movement’s attitude in a 1989 article appearing in Kristol’s journal, The National Interest. Boldly calling for the integration of the United States, Europe, and Japan, he yearned for a “super-sovereign” state that would be “economically, culturally, and politically hegemonic in the world.” Not satisfied with such a novel creation, he further urged a “new universalism [which] would require the conscious depreciation not only of American sovereignty but of the notion of sovereignty in general.” And he added: “This is not as outrageous as it sounds.” Maybe not to a neoconservative, but a real conservative and especially a constitutionalist wouldn’t hesitate for a moment in labeling such ideas “outrageous.”

Wow..
...this is right on the button. I just wish we had a REAL conservative candidate to push forward that would take this article to heart.

There are honest to God conservatives running (Newt Gringich, John Paul, Tancredo etc.) but they really have no hope of winning. It leaves me torn between "holding my nose" and supporting a moderate republican or standing by my principles and voting my heart and mind.

I hate to think of the Hildebeast as POTUS, running things into the ground. Tough choices. Lets hope and pray for a miracle. We need one.

BlueBustard
I love that term - "Moderate Ignorati"! It's so true. The MSM do a wonderful job portraying dems and libs as so non-threatening and reasonable - and repubs and conservatives as mean-spirited - hilarious name when you think about it -we're the "meanies".

Unfortunately, that middle, ignorant group is easily swayed by the MSM and they CAN decide close elections.

Prod the Elephants
Great article and also the comments! Let's not forget that Republican are portrayed as the great perpetrators of voter fraud, and it all began in Florida 2000.

some comments from a democrat
1) Respect The Base

The republicans have a base, it is composed of fundamentalists christians, anti-gays, people who are pro life, pro family, moral values people.

Democrats do not have a base. We are basically the not republican camp. In the democrat camp you'll find gays, big government people, labor, Clinton middle of the road democrats who voted for the war in Iraq, Marxists, capitalists who don't believe in god, so they can't be republicans. Democrats are basically the big tent party, republicans say they are big tent, but they aren't. There's no base here. This is a republican virtue, to be able to stay on target and attract the base. Democrats cant do this very well, you can't support labor as a democrat, most modern democrats find auto labor unions as vile as the republicans do, yet, labor unions are part of the fold. Not the base tho, there isn't any.

4) Hang Together Instead Of Hanging Separately

Liberals attack each other all the time. They are never all on one page. Republicans on the other hand, are like a flock of birds, they all veer in the same direction, I don't know if Karl Rove hands out talking points every day, but I can go on the blog sites and every republican site will use the exact same language, wahtever the topic is, one day I hear "cut and run" the next day I hear "surge" every day it's the same. Democrats aren't that organized it's like herding cats, it's impossible. We attack each other all the time, republicans keep their mouths closed rather than attack each other. That's why when Ann Coulter called someone a faggot, I was very surprised to see Michelle Malkin say it was wrong. You see, a republican saying that another republican is wrong is so incredibly rare, that it makes news if it ever happens! That's not the case for democrats. We are a back biting disorganized mob.

5) Attack, Attack, Attack!

Republicans are way better at attacking. No question about this. The reason is that republicans have message disclipine. They all hone in on a target, like a few weeks ago, like when Kerry acting like a moron and had his little "joke" everyone piled on. Democrats are awful at attacking, you see. Some liberal bloggers will attack Bush, others will attack Rove, others will attack each other, and because of this lack of message discipline, we can't stick memes into people's heads.

I think your general message here is do what republicans do but more of it! You haven't been listing what democrats are good at.

Now let me tell you what democrats really are good at. republicans are like daddy. democrats are like mommy. Republicans come down strict and authoritarian, they lay down the rules. They are unforgiving and about standing up on your own feet. Mommy democrats are about forgiveness and inclusion, about caring for the sick.

What republicans REALLY need to do is send out a message that even though they are the daddy party, they are also an inclusive party. Republicans need to bring back to the fold small government republicans, now it's clear the the Bush administration is big government, what has to happen is they have to craft a message of inclusiveness, to show that they do not merely appeal to the base, to bring back the big tent. The republicans basically said to Andrew Sullivan and anyone else who was part of the Reagan revolution, "We don't want you."

That's the only reason the democrats are doing well, we are a scatterbrained disorganized mob, but we'll let pretty much anyone who wants, to join.
