Conservative Case for Duncan Hunter In 2008

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

If you're looking for someone who can represent the conservative wing of the Republican Party in 2008, California Congressman Duncan Hunter fills that bill far better that any of the top contenders who have already gotten into the race. Here's a short, but sweet primer that may help explain why that's the case.

He Is The "National Security Candidate."

If you're looking for a candidate with credibility on national security issues, Duncan Hunter is your guy. Hunter is a hawkish, former Vietnam veteran who "served in the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers" and earned a Bronze Star. His son also served two tours in Iraq as a Marine, so we're talking about a guy who has had "skin in the game" over in Mesopotamia. Additionally, Hunter served on the House Armed Services Committee and rose to the rank of Chairman before the Democrat takeover in 2006.

So, when it comes to foreign policy issues like Iraq, we're talking about a candidate who oozes credibility. But, has he done an about face on Iraq now that the polls are against it? No, he strongly supports the surge and he had this to say about how he views the war in Iraq when I interviewed him back in December:

"Well, the U.S. is following in the same basic pattern that we've followed for 60 years in expanding freedom around the world. (The first step is) that we stand up a free government and we've done that in Iraq.

The second step is we stand up a military capable of protecting that government and the third step is the U.S. leaves. We followed that pattern in Japan and the Philippines and Salvadore and our own hemisphere and it's been the traditional and the effective method of this country spreading freedom around the world."

In my opinion, that's probably a better, simple explanation of what we're doing than George Bush has given in the last couple of years.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

Duncan Hunter has been one of the Republican House leaders in the fight against illegal immigration. Not only is Hunter the primary mover and shaker behind the San Diego border fence, he "wrote the Secure Fence Act" which George Bush signed into law in late October of last year.

Yet, Hunter has managed to avoid some of the harsh rhetoric that sometimes gets other tough-on-illegal-immigration pols in trouble. For example, in our interview last year, Hunter emphasized how important it is to get a fence up in order to prevent illegal immigrants from being killed as they cross the border:

"The first piece is that the major part of the fence is to be built between Calexico, California and Douglas, Arizona and that portion, that's 392 miles, that's the area through which most of the people come who have died of dehydration or sunstroke in the desert sun in the summer months.

So one provision that we put in there is that we have to have at least interlocking cameras...before the hot season, so there's a humanitarian dimension to this and that's something that's been missed by many of the liberals."

His Trade Position May Be a "Bug" To Republicans, But It Can Be A "Feature" To Democrats

There is one area in particular where Duncan Hunter departs from the conservative orthodoxy and that's on trade issues. He's neither a fan of free trade agreements like NAFTA and CAFTA, nor does he think we're getting a square deal on trade from China.

Although many Republicans will disagree with Hunter on this issue, many Democrats find themselves nodding their heads in agreement with what he has to say. In important electoral-vote-rich states like Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, Hunter's message will resonate with working class Democrats who might not otherwise vote Republican. That could be the crucial factor that swings an election in our favor in 2008.

All This And He's Socially Conservative, Too

There have been a lot of complaints that the two front-runners for the GOP nomination, John McCain and Rudy Giuliani, have little to offer to social conservatives who are going to have to turn out in 2008 if the GOP has a chance to win.

On the other hand, Duncan Hunter is opposed to gay marriage, staunchly anti-abortion, and should have no problem appealing to conservative Christians. As a matter of fact, Hunter has even introduced the, "Right to Life Act (which) specifically acknowledges the personhood of the unborn." Hunter says that bill, if passed, "would allow us to have a reversal of the effects of Roe v. Wade without a constitutional amendment."

He Has Lots Of Mileage, But No Heavy Baggage

One of the things that's becoming apparent about the top contenders in the race for the Republican nomination is that all of them have some extremely heavy baggage. We've got divorces, adulterers galore, candidates whom much of the party won't support for one reason or another, a candidate who will be 72 in 2008, and another one, who, unfortunately, may lose a considerable amount of support because of his religious beliefs. Now, Hunter? He has been married once, has no significant scandals to live down, and there don't appear to be any other major minuses that will cost him a few percentage points at election time. Could he have some scandal in his closet that we know nothing about? Maybe, but that's the case with any politician. At the moment, he looks very good on this front compared to the top contenders.

Furthermore, Duncan Hunter was first elected to Congress back in 1980. In a post 9/11 world, a Vietnam vet with 25+ years of experience in government makes a nice contrast to the trio of lightweights who are fighting for the Democrat nomination (Obama, 2 years in the Senate, Edwards, 6 years in the Senate, and Clinton, 6 years in the Senate). If there were another 9/11, with whom would you feel more comfortable in the Oval Office, John Edwards, who'd probably curl up in the fetal position under his desk, or a guy like Duncan Hunter, who has been around the block a few times?

To Know Him Is To Love Him, Or At Least To Like Him Better Than McCain

When you're taking a look at a 2nd tier candidate like Duncan Hunter, who has minimal name recognition at the national level, the first thing most people will think is, "Good, bad, it doesn't matter if he can't capture the nomination." That's a fair point. But, there have been a couple of indications that Hunter has what it takes to catch on.

The first was a mid-January "straw poll of Republican precinct committeemen" in Maricopa County, Arizona. Hunter took first place. He also did surprisingly well, given his lack of name recognition, in a poll of right-of-center bloggers. In that poll, Hunter drew the fourth highest level of support and when the level of opposition to each candidate was subtracted from that person’s support, Hunter actually came in second place.

Notice that in both cases, you have two groups of extremely well informed, conservative participants, that are probably several months ahead of the general public in knowledge about the candidates and in both cases, Hunter did very well. That's a strong indication that if Hunter can get his name out there, he can compete with the top tier candidates in the race.

Conclusion:

Granted, it's a little too early to endorse any candidate, Duncan Hunter included. After all, we don't know all the candidates that will be running yet and they haven't even had the first debate.

Moreover, there are a lot of different positions that many of the candidates have yet to take a stance on one way or the other. For example, there are 2nd Amendment issues. Hunter is "near perfect" there. A Balanced Budget Amendment? He supports it. What sort of judges would candidates appoint to the bench? Hunter would prefer someone like Scalia. Pardoning Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean? Hunter thinks that is the right thing to do. School vouchers, the missile defense shield, a 2/3 majority in Congress to raise taxes? Hunter is in favor of all of them.

Does that mean other candidates won't end up taking those same positions? No. Does it mean Hunter is perfect? No. But, when you compare Duncan Hunter to everyone else in the race right now, he looks very appealing. In the end, maybe that won't matter because Hunter won't get any traction, but I, for one, hope that conservatives will take a good, long look at Hunter before they make a decision on which candidate to support in 2008.

and liked everything he said. What's more he's leading a charge to get our two border patrol agents pardoned.

Anyone know what...
...his stand on the support of Israel is?

To kjv
He gets low ratings from the Jewish groups listed at Project Vote Smart. High marks from almost all conservative groups. Looks fairly good to me.

Rep. Hunter
seems to be a good candidate. Time will show whether he can run against the big money candidates. However, if a Hunter/Tancredo or Tancredo/Hunter ticket through a third party candidacy would emerge, we might see a close 1/3rd - 1/3rd - 1/3rd split in the final vote. That would make things very interesting.

Hunter: No MSM "seal of approval"
It's less than ironic that the mainstream media have narrowed the GOP prez field in '08 to two men objectionable to the GOP's conservative base: Insane McCain (whose unconstitutional Campaign Finance Reform measure has been a failure on every level) and Rudy RINO, who doesn't have a conservative bone in his body, but wouldn't it be a "rush" to be prez?

At the moment, with half of the elected officials in DC "considering" a run for the presidency in '08, Duncan Hunter may seem a face in the crowd...until one starts taking a closer look.

Mr Hawkins, thanks for giving TownHall readers a chance to take a closer look at one of the few credible candidates for '08, a group into which McCain and Rudy do not fall. If either is nominated, the race will depend upon how many conservatives will go out and vote AGAINST the dem candidate (yuck, yuck, and yuck...in that order).

After being betrayed by the current crop of idiots pretending to be republicans, I suspect that many conservatives such as I will NOT be manipulated by some political "guru" into holding my nose and voting for a lousy candidate, no matter how clever the "guru" might be.

Duncan Hunter might not win if nominated, but he would certainly get my vote and those of other conservatives who tire of "wannabe" dems in hopes that by betraying their party, they are showing their "independence." Chuck Hagel comes to mind. Chuck, look what happened to fellow empty suit Lincoln Chafee. Think about it.

McCain and Rudy? Not only will I not vote for either, I won't read any more TownHall columns that collude with the MSM in limiting our "choice" of candidates to such slim pickin's.

PRETEND that you have a thought process and start producing more columns that give exposure to candidates who might "earn" the conservative vote. I like Ron Paul, too, but Duncan Hunter is my man in '08. I routinely vote a straight Republican ticket (largely to vote AGAINST democrats)...but I can make an exception. Give me nothing and expect just such a response.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of other conservatives "sending a message" to DC and the GOP that we're not mindless chess pieces to be manipulated by some political "guru." We have values on a number of levels. Having a poor president is not much of an incentive to get out the vote.

You see, we can be patient and wait for any of the dem candidates to flounder through 4 years of playing president, then see if the GOP has learned anything from this. No serious person can imagine Hillary, Edwards, or Obama as Commander in Chief of our military...when we are well into a REAL world war, as opposed to the Cold War, which was basically an elaborate and expensive game of Charade.

What part of "We will destroy Israel and the Great Satan" don't people understand? We have a figurative gun pointed at our faces. Want to play a game of "chicken" with sociopaths with nukes?

On the other hand, Christian conservatives face, if worse comes to worse, a meeting with our Maker. To me, this sounds preferable to what our "culture" is devolving into. "American Idol" or God? I have never and will never watch American Idol, so the choice isn't difficult.

This would be an excellent time to get right with God. Perhaps there will never be a second 9/11. On the other hand, 9/11 may turn out to have been the "pre-game show."

Of course, as Americans, all enjoy the right to make up their own minds. It will be helpful if some actual thought goes into such a weighty decision. Catchy slogans on bumperstickers don't seem like a viable alternative.

"If it feels good, do it." Right up to the point where your remains have a radioactive half-life.

Hunter Needs To Distance Himself...
...from Tancredo. Tancredo (I like him) but he has made too many political blunders. Hunter needs to aggresively dispell the accusations that he is a Nativists and run as a Pro-Immigrant candidate. Legal immigrants that is. And more fairly distributed to other countries rather than having all the slots filled by those from Mexico and Central America. That way he can pick up support from Non-Hispanic immigrant groups. And he will if he takes that stance.
Regarding support for Israel - that is extremely important. "Jewish Groups" generally give low marks to all Repub's. Right? But what were his comments and feelings about the recent war in Lebannon? That will tell us a lot.
I'm fairly excited about Hunter's candidacy. But he needs to jump off into it asap and start hitting the campaign trail. Why isn't he in Iowa w/Hillary? He'd better get his behind in gear. DD

We know who the winner will be
To make it a real ticket the Republicans need to combine Haley Barbour with Duncan Hunter. The current band of media anointed "front runners" aren't even liked by their own party, who the Hell is going to put them in office?

I like Hunter!
I also like Newt...that guy (I don't CARE about his baggage) is so articulate and frames issues with such intelligence and vision.

But my second choice would be hunter.

I like what Tancredo stands for, but man! every time I hear him speak I think he's such an ineffective speaker....and we've already suffered from Bush.

I like that Hunter and Gingrich bring in PERSPECTIVE...historical perspective. You rarely hear an official ever refer to our history. It's maddening...cuz Lord knows most people have no historical knowledge to frame issues on their own.

let's go with Hunter
Unless Newt enters the race, Hunter seems to be the only conservative around. Combine Hunter with Kasich, from Ohio, and we have a winning ticket. Both are what has been missing since Reagan, candidates with speaking ability, charisma and the ability to connect with the voting public.

better questions
What is his stance on tax reform(flat/fair tax)?
What is his stance on privitizing socialist security?
What is his stance on school vouchers?
What is his stance on McCain-Feingold and the (un)Fairness doctrine?

His stance against free trade is a black mark in my book. Looking at countries of the world the ones with the most free trade are almost always the most prosperous.

What does it tell you...
when the best conservative candidates for Prez are ignored bythe MSM AND the RNC, and instead we get RINO's like Giuliani and turncoats like McCain shoved repeatedly shoved at us?

Ron Paul is running
He is a true conservative, if that is what you really want. He has walked his talk for years in Congress and has the voting record to prove it. I encourage everyone to check out his record. You can read some of his speeches here:

NAFTA is NOT a conservative position
I'm not sure to whom you are directing your comment to, Lydia, but NO, NAFTA is not a conservative position. That is why Congressmen Paul voted against it. Neither are any of the other non-free trade agreements, by the way.

Duncan Hunter
He does sound appealing. I'm of the mind that a grass roots chosen candidate will be far better than anything the MSM can chose for us like McCain. I still like Tancredo and beleive that illegal immigration is tied for the number one issue with terrorism--Tancredo is the only out there who has said what Virginia conservatives are thinking on this issue.

Hunter-Kasich
I've liked Hunter for a long time, and John Kasich from Ohio, as another above pointed out. I really like Dana Rohrbacher from CA too. I was thinking Kasich may be a free trader; correct me if I'm wrong.

The end of dollar hegemony (Ron Paul)
Here is another speech by Congressman Ron Paul:

The end of Dollar Hegemony:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8327695139643041382&hl=en

It is quite good.

---------------------------

By the way, Paul has a stance those of you that want the illegal alien invasion STOPPED, will love. Tancredo is good on this issue, but Ron Paul is good on ALL the issues.

Please check him out. If you believe in true conservative ideals and our Constitution, I promise you will love Dr. Paul.

Free Trade...
The Free Trade pendulum has swung too far to the left. Global Free Traders like Bush have gone way too far. To the point that they have put a "price tag" on our sovereignty and national identity. America is the riches market in the world. We don't have to beg the world to come do business. We need free trade, don't get me wrong, but it needs to be more on our terms. And we can have it both ways because we are the richest market.
Ron Paul has some good ideas but he also gets off onto some kooky, libertarian tangents. He's not vice-presidential material. I like him but he would be a liability.
I like the general: Lets Go w/Hunter. He's the best so far. DD
http://streetlevel.townhall.com

A Good Choice
If Romney doesn't get the nomination, I hope Hunter does.

Hunter the Populist Candidate
A winning and successful Republican President (and I mean Reagan or Eisenhower) has to reach out to the populist base. "Reagan Democrats" are part of this but the GOP has traditionally had a vast populist base.

Republicans lost in '06 because they walked away from their populist base. This includes the religious voters, the good-government votes, the gun rights activists, the libertarians and the independent small businessmen. These are the folk that got Reagan elected and Duncan Hunter appears to be appealing to these folk.

NAFTA & China -- outside of the party elite, the vast majority of the party base is somewhat quietly uneasy about this. Kinda like nucular power, if done right it is a good thing but we are not really sure about how this is being done. The base is kinda uneasy about China. The base knows that any illegal alien amnesty will also have affirmative action consequences. And when they start hearing about things like ceeding US territory to Mexico for a 6-lane highway through the middle of the country, they really start not being happy.

I view NAFTA and free trade like water - essential to a good economy but like water if you drink too much you die, have too much and you drown in a flood. Hunter appears not to be an isolationist but instead one wanting to take this in moderation.

I like that he is antiabortion but is dogmatic about this? Or is he like Reagan - opposed to abortion but still able to function without shutting everything down over the issue. The majority of the country is quietly anti-abortion and will support a candidate that is opposed to abortion as long as he "isn't crazy about it."

And do not underestimate the gun issue. Romney raised Mass gun licenses to $100 and said that if you can't afford it you can get rid of your guns. And he lost a lot of quiet support for that...

Darvin
He's not running for VP; he is running for President. By the way, what exactly do you think is a "kooky, libertarian tangent"? Please be specific.

Ron Paul is a constitutionalist and embodies true conservative ideals. For me, this is exactly the candidate I want.

NAFTA is NOT free trade
Problem is... NAFTA is NOT free trade. It is managed trade. It provides for a ruling body that sits above our own elected representatives and gives favor to SELECT corporations.

Free trade is good. NAFTA, CAFTA, etc. are NOT.

I agree Randy
A Tancredo/Hunter independent race may be a spoiler and put Madame Clinton back in the White House, but at least it would send a message to what's left of the Repugnant party for 2012. Of course, the Repukes likely wouldn't listen.

In reality
I do not think the Repukes have a chance unless they have at least one immigration hardliner on the ticket. Don't look for that with McCain or Giuliani, who are pretty much in tune with Jorge Boosh and the Demo party on the issue.

If a popular governor or senator runs with either Paul, Tancredo, Pence, or Hunter on the ticket, it would be a surefire winner.

In 2000, I decided to stay home when Bush declared himself a "compassionate conservative". To many, Bush offered hope of a return to Reaganism, but I knew it wouldn't happen. Bush is a wimpy dud when it comes to domestic issues. He reaches across the isle and gets his hand bitten so much that you'd think he would have learned by now, but he hasn't.

Globalists
Junior Bush, like his Daddy is a New World Order globalist. If we love our country and our Constitution, we'd better stay away from anyone of the same ilk. It's going to be tough, because they're strewn throughout both major parties.

Go with Tancredo
Hunter seems OK, but I think Tancredo would be better because he has more of the "bulldog" in him. He knows how to fight back and isn't afraid to say exactly what he thinks. When Jeb Bush said of Tancredo when Tancredo said Miami was a third world city, "He doesn't represent my kind of thinking," Tancredo shot back, "I don't want to represent his kind of thinking."

That did it for me. No pussyfooting here. If the other guy is wrong Tancredo says so no matter who he is. That's the kind of spunk America is looking for.

I thought this was an article on Duncan
How come the comments about this article turned towards Ron Paul? I thought that it was about Duncan Hunter. I think that you folks who like Ron or whoever certainly have the right to like those folks, but, why not make some substantive comments about the subject of the column? If and or when Ron and the rest get plugged then make comments about them...

I liked the information about Duncan. He looks like a candidate who could go far towards helping the country return to a more conservative stance on many things in our time. I just hope that there is a candidate just like him who could replace him in California.

Ricster
Sorry Ricster. I see your point, but when Hunter was pitched as the most conservative candidate running, I felt it necessary to set the record straight and let folks know about Ron Paul. Then, they can check out both of them and make their own decisions.

Since Dr. Paul doesn't sell out his constitutional principles to any special interest or party, it's unlikely he will get much controlled mass media coverage.

strong immigration policy
I'm looking for a candidate with a strong immigration policy, but not a border fence. That is too reminiscent of the Berlin Wall.

Talk of a border fence is somewhat cowardly, and in itself is a "walk on the fence". It hints of someone who is serious about immigration, but not willing to pursue hard answers. I don't know what it is, but, there's a better answer than that. It's going to take pursuing hard answers, and the courage to put those answers in place .

Liberty
I checked the link for your Ron Paul and it says that he's against this war. I won't vote for him.

Truth is.
He is just a stalking horse for the Bush Bots, they push him out to take away from real Republicans he got on CNN with Lou Dobbs and could not and would not say one bad thing about Bush who has now pushed a good 10% of our Republican vote base out of the party for good, and that 10% Bush and his money cult pushed out did cause the loss in Nov. but they did not go of their own wish they were pushed overboard by the money cult now in control of the National Republican Committee. Said Committee who just put in another Bush Bot lemming ready to rush off the cliff of "am-nasty", so go Duncan, give him money so the other real Republicans can not gain ground, when Hildie Beast and Bill Clinton are both eating out at Kiddy Bunk Port with old man Bush etal remember these words.

Information your eyes refuse to see:
1. Marines with ROE's that do not allow them to fight.
2. "Its the Religion of Peace"
3. "I looked into the last evil eyes of Russia seeking revenge and all I saw was myself on the news next morning being nice.
4. In Texas of Feb. of 2007 after the National Guard ran from armed border invaders, rather than learn how to capture said invaders the Tenn. National Guard is doing training on how to act when taken hostage or they are kidnaped.
5. Two Border Patrol Agents are in Federal prison
for doing their jobs of protecting the borders, they saw an known illegal who was a known drug dealer and known to carry wepons, the ran to escape back accross the Mexican border, he had a fist fight with one of the officers, when the other officer came he saw what he felt was a gun pointed at him , he fired, the illegal drug dealer ran down to the Rio Grande, ran accross the river and climbed into a waiting truck. Later he was found by a drug dealing friend in Mexico and was offered imunity to tell lies in Federal Court about the shooting, the Gov. DA guy Sutton used this and kept the information of the drug dealer getting arrested once more during the trial with more illegal drugs, even this later act of crime was sealed and not delt with by Sutton, he even had the crime work done by the Texas Rangers rather than the FBI , so he and Gov. Perry, Bush's little todie bud could
work the evidence the way they wanted. Now these two good men are in jail, and why, why, all this ?
6. All over America things like the "wage slave scab welders with fake ID's fake SS #s, and fake union code welders union books are used by the likes of Duke Energy on high pressure interstate gas pipe line construction and the welds are ok'd using fake and fraud X'rays or by using good welders X'rayed welds two three times, and Bush, and the Republican National Commitee know of this and they know the earnings reports of Duke Energy, D.H. Horton Homes LLC, CenTex Homes, Lennard Homes, Inc. are all based on useing illegal immigrant labor and covering the fact up with subcontractors and the FICA and the withholding never reaches the U.S. Goverment.
Fraud on investors and known by the Publicn Accounting Firms and the U.S. Senate and the House of Rep.'s

"There is an evil money cult in control of the Republican Party and it now sows the last seeds of destruction"

Face large drop off cliff, march one two three,
good bye bush bots, happy landings.

That settles it then:
If Ron Paul, the guy with 2 first names, is against this war, how could we support him? I've been impressed with Hunter the past four months since he has appeared more on Fox news. Hunter is a great name also for those who only look at the name and know little about the person which is way too many folks in the old USA. Keep it simple folks, like Reagan did.

Light at the end of the tunnel
My money is on Duncan Hunter. I will never vote for any of the three current "front runners". I have always like Hunter, but now learning that he is spearheading the pardoning of the two border patrol agents who are in prison for only doing jobs no president want to do, I am more of a Hunter fan. With the current president, we can expect amnesty to be a done deal and drug dealers to receive favorable treatment. With Hunter, we can change all that in 21 months.

Dawncy
Dawncy said "Talk of a border fence is somewhat cowardly, and in itself is a "walk on the fence". It hints of someone who is serious about immigration, but not willing to pursue hard answers. I don't know what it is, but, there's a better answer than that."

There is an answer, and a simple one at that. Hefty fines for employers of illegal aliens. $50,000 per illegal. Nothing else needed. And, it won't cost the taxpayers a dime.

Who brought us NAFTA?
I recall it being Clinton. When it started to drag our economy the Democrats started to blame the Republicans as if they had done it, but it was a big Clinton idea. And, if I remember correctly, the Democrats still had control of the House at the time. Not sure on that, but I am sure on Clinton.

No RINO - PLEASE!
Hunter sounds good from what I'm hearing, but I know I will not vote for a RINO. If a DEM gets in as president, the Republican party will feel no obligation to approve their leftist patter. But if a RINO gets elected, then the RNC will herd the party to support the liberal pablum being thrown out and we could end up worse than if we had elected the Democrat! Talk about reverse psychology - no wonder the RINO's are getting such good coverage from the MSM.

So far
Duncan Hunter is the only one I can and will support.

In Rep. Hunter's own words
Here is Rep. Duncan Hunter's campaign website:

http://www.gohunter08.com/Home.aspx

He also knows how to campaign - he has easily won re-election to his district many times.

Worth checking him out. Could be our man!

Karen
Perhaps you ought to read WHY Congressman Paul believes we should end this war we are currently in. He is extremely strong on national defense for DEFENDING our country. However, he does not believe that is what we are doing in Iraq.

National Security vs. Great Hair
Hunter is very attractive as the "National Security" candidate, but Romney has great hair, and is very attractive period. If Hunter can improve his hair, he could be unstoppable.

What is the deal with all the Tancredo love here? I think he sucks. Tancredo is the Kucinich of the Republican party as far as the goofball factor goes. Just look into his eyes and you can tell he has that "crazy look". Everyone, please forget about Tancredo. By the way, I hope the Bush immigration reform passes before '08.

What about, if Romney gets it, then a Romney/Hunter ticket? Romney will provide the great hair, Hunter the military stud-liness? Think about it.

Ron Paul is NO Conservative
He is a Libertarian. And while I am in 95% agreement with he Libertarian positions, that pesky 5% bothers me. They are by and large(not sure about Ron Paul) pro abortion and weak on national defense. Also, a real conservative like Duncan Hunter or Tom Tancredo is a lot easier to sell to the American people than a dyed-in-the-wool Libertarian.

Tancredo has a lifetime ACU rating of 99 (almost perfect) and Hunter is right there with a 92. Paul has a respectable lifetime rating of 83. Not bad, but not a Reagan conservative.

The more I read about Duncan Hunter, the more I like the guy. He can really offer conservative solutions and oppose the socialist clowns.

Forget Tancredo
I heard something about him getting out of 'nam via a mental health deferrment...very un-attractive. Tancredo is a goof, so what about his ACU rating? I bet Kucinich gets 100% liberal rating, being the wierdo of the Democrat ranks, so who cares?

About Hunter, I agree he has some of that populist appeal. Since the country seems headed in that direction, I'm willing to give a little in that area if it means we get a strong National Security Republican in the WH.

Hunter needed badly
Is President Bush switching parties? In a practical sense, some say he already has. There is recent evident that he is indeed ditching the Republican Party. Last week, he attended the annual Democrat Party winter meeting to push amnesty for illegals. He told the audience that he and the Democrats “share a bond in having been shot in the back by Republicans on immigration.”

By the way, the Republican Party was also having their meeting in Baltimore the same week. Bush did not attend. The Republicans came out of their meeting with one agreement, that the 2008 presidential nominee got to be McCain, Romney or Giuliani. When asked about his stance on illegal aliens, guest workers and amnesty, Romney said he "eventually will take a position on the issue." Eventually? We know where McCain stands on illegals.

Hunter is the man!

HUNTER 2008
Duncan Hunter is the one guy in the race so far I could vote for. No pro-amnesty candidate for me. Hillary will be our next president if the Republicans think fear of Hillary would get to vote for McAmnesty. Or Giuliamnesty, or Brownbamnesty.

HUNTER 2008
Duncan Hunter is the one man in the race so far that I would vote for. McCain, Giuliani, Brownback are all pro-amnesty. Romney has good hair, but as with another good hair candidate, I'm not sure you can trust him. Seems a little too slick. The campaign material I received from Romney recently was a survey and framed the immigration question so that you could choose between amnesty and open borders or greatly increased legal immigration. Wasn't a confidence booster. I'm looking for someone who will represent American citizens, not pander to illegal aliens like McCain. We have not only the right to enforce our laws, but the responsibility to do it, something many in Washington have forgotten they took an oath to do. Hillary will be the next president if the Republicans think conservatives like me will vote for anybody just to stop Hillary. I will not vote at all if my choice is pro-illegal either way.

Duncan Hunter
Duncan Hunter is right on the issues(strong military/fight against terrorism, illegal aliens, fair trade).

Question: Can Hunter get the political traction needed to get "earned media?"

If Hunter can breakout from the second-tier into first-tier and consequentially have his name always mentioned when the story is the race for the Republican nomination for President, then Duncan Hunter has a real shot to win.

Presently, the Main Stream Media just aren't mentioning Hunter's name very much.

The Main Stream Media based mostly in New York City want Giuliani because he is supported by "the East Coast elite."

Also, the MSM favor "free trade"(managed trade) and "amnesty," so are loathe to give Hunter any "earned" media.

Duncan Hunter needs grass roots support to force his name into the media.

Duncan Hunter deserves grass roots support for President.

I hope Hunter can get the job done.

I'll do my part, will you?

Duncan Hunter and trade
I understand there are folks who consider themselves "free traders" and therefore are hesitant or unwilling to support Duncan Hunter because he has voiced criticism of the current "free trade" policies.

But let me ask you this:

Is it truly free trade, say with China, when the Chinese rebate the value added tax(VAT 17%) to their exporting companies for exports to America, then turn around and impose an import tax(17%) on American imports, and on top of all that artificially undervalue their currency by
40% to get a total advantage of 74%?

My answer is no. It is neither "free" nor fair.

America has a $200 billion trade deficit with China alone and last year had a $800 billion trade deficit overall.

"Free traders" if the above is true are you comfortable with that situation and do you want it to continue?

I hope the answer is no because it seems to me American companies who would export are getting a raw deal (of course, under the above regime, companies may not even try to export).

Duncan Hunter has the strength to come to grips with trade issues and demand fair solutions that keep America strong, and give the most productive companies and workers in the world an export/import environment where they can be successful.

Free Trade......or Nationalism?
"Economic nationalism is the policy of rising powers, free trade the policy of declining powers. For great powers have ever regarded trade as an arena of struggle in the clash of nations. It is no accident all four presidents who made it to Mount Rushmore were protectionists."
Patrick J. Buchanan

"Thank God I am not a free trader. Pernicious indulgence in the doctrine of free trade seems inevitably to produce fatty degeneration of the moral fiber."
Theodore Roosevelt

"...in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme
point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution.
It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade."

Karl Marx

Tancredo and Hunter
2008!

Hunter=Bush
You forgot to add 2 more points on why you should vote for him.

1.He sucks at golf.
2.He's a cheap tipper.
