Earning the Majority: The Road Back

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

People often tell me that their first emotion on the night of November 7, 2006 was disappointment. Indeed, after spending many nights on the road last summer and fall, traveling around the country and seeing firsthand the enthusiasm and commitment of Republican volunteers nationwide, our loss in the House and Senate was a bitter pill to swallow. But my personal disappointment quickly gave way to resolve, and I knew that if Republicans were going to earn back the congressional majority in 2008 we would have to start the next morning.

Notice that I said “earn” back the majority. Our friends on the other side of the aisle often talked of "taking" back the House and Senate, as if it were somehow rightfully theirs by default. If there is one big lesson that stands out from our party’s time in the majority, it is this: a congressional majority is simply a means to an end. The value of a majority lies not in the chance to wield great power, but in the chance to use limited power to do great things on behalf of the American people.

Our Goal: Earn Back the Majority

Our job over the course of the next 16 months is to rebuild Americans’ confidence in Republicans’ ability to deliver a government that is limited, honest, accountable, and responsive to their needs. Starting last fall, we’ve worked to develop a strategy that will help us earn back the majority by reclaiming our position as the party of limited government and big ideas. Our strategy for success is rooted in three key principles.

One, we will be proactive, beginning with a broad and ongoing effort to communicate bold, innovative solutions rooted in our principles.

Two, we will define and contrast our solutions with their stale ideas, illustrating the very real differences between our parties and what they mean for the average American. We can’t be content to rely on Democrats’ failures. Remember, they didn’t win in November – we lost.

And three, we will hold Democrats accountable at every opportunity. Whether it is on the House floor, on the campaign trail, in the local newspaper or on the evening news, we will be aggressive and take the risks necessary to be successful.

The Strategy: Be Proactive

Republicans will be proactive on a number of fronts, particularly in terms of communicating new, innovative solutions to the American public.

Through their unrelenting in their opposition to our proposals, whether it was providing tax relief to middle-class families, providing affordable health care to small businesses and their workers, reforming runaway entitlement programs, expanding domestic energy production, or other staples of the Republican platform, Democrats were able to sell voters the impression that we’d stagnated – that we were defending the status quo rather than blazing new trails as we once had. Despite their lack of any real agenda, Democrats exploited the idea that we’d stalled – and we paid the price.

That’s what I mean when I say Democrats didn’t win in November, we lost. You can see that reflected in the polls that show after only a few months with Democrats in power, many voters are already having buyer’s remorse. Not only are more and more Americans uncomfortable with the direction Democrats are attempting to take the country, they understand they haven’t accomplished anything yet. This gives us a great opportunity to communicate bold, new, and innovative ideas.

President Ronald Reagan summed up the importance of communicating big ideas in his farewell address in 1989. He said:

“[I]n all of that time I won a nickname, ‘The Great Communicator.’ But I never thought it was my style or the words I used that made a difference: it was the content. I wasn’t a great communicator, but I communicated great things….”

There is an appetite across the country for new ideas. If we are proactive and communicate – on a district-by-district basis – that we are the agents of positive change, we will succeed.

The Strategy: Define The Contrasts

Republicans will aggressively sell our solutions to today’s problems and will contrast them with Democrats’ tired love for bigger government and higher taxes.

Take health care as an example. Millions of Americans go without health coverage every year – we want to change that. To expand access to quality, affordable health care, Republicans want small business health plans and expanded tax-free Health Savings Accounts, and are working on other free-market proposals.

How would Democrats cover the uninsured? With more government – DMV-style health care for the 21st century – and higher taxes for everyone.

Republicans want to break America’s addiction to foreign oil. Democrats? They raised taxes on American energy producers this year, raising prices at the pump and making America more dependent on hostile foreign governments for energy. See a pattern here?

Republicans are committed to victory in the Global War on Terror. Democrats, of course, have voted repeatedly to tie the hands of our generals and loaded up a war funding bill with billions in pork. They even proposed shifting funding from critical intelligence operations to study climate change. Does that sound like a party that’s serious about national security?

Similarly, on the issues of welfare reform, balancing the budget without raising taxes, entitlement reform, and strengthening the economy, Americans have a natural inclination to agree with our positions. To succeed, we will do a better job of defining and contrasting our ideas with those of the Democrats.

The Strategy: Hold Democrats Accountable

Whether it is on the House floor or on the campaign trail, we will hold Democrats accountable. And we will do so with all of the tools at our disposal.

Democrats have quickly found out that governing isn’t easy once you move past poll-tested, sloganeering. For all the promises they made, not one of their "Six for ‘06" proposals has been enacted into law. And no bill of substance has been signed into law as of this writing.

While we no longer control the daily agenda, we’re holding Democrats accountable for their promises, for their ethical problems, and for their liberal agenda. So far, our efforts are winning bipartisan support and addressing problems the American families are concerned about.

For example, we’ve forced Democrats to take tough votes – for them – on whether to shower convicted criminals with taxpayer funded loans, or whether taxpayer-funded colleges and universities can discriminate against U.S. military recruiters.

We will also take every opportunity to hold Democrats accountable politically. We will make better use of new technologies to organize grassroots support and engage new voters, and we will seek out and build new coalitions – and strengthen existing ones – with groups that share our commitment to limited government and strong national security.

To succeed in 2008, we will keep the heat on them on all fronts.

Our Task: Seize The Opportunity

All around the country there is a healthy appetite for change. Republican candidates need to capitalize on that hunger, and show the American people that we are the party of change. This fight is about ideas – it is not just for the sake of fighting. By reclaiming our position as the party of limited government and big ideas, we can succeed in earning back the majority.

Nice words
that I've heard before.I'll wait to see what happens. One item that can be added to the GOP todo list is earmarks and how out of control they really are.
Robert Novaks blog from 8/13 stated exactly how ridiculous this practice has become. The defense appropriation bill before congress has no less than 1300 pork projects attached to it(one of them to the tune of $39 million. This is outrageous. You're talking a mean talk Mr. Boehner, can you deliver?

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice
Mr. Boehner, I have been a conservative since I hae been able to vote. My first presidential election, I could not wait to cast my vote for Ronald Reagan in 1980. The 1994 election was to supposed to be the beginning of a real change, but that change was short lived. For six years the Republicans controlled both the Congress and the White House and did not do a damn thing to correct the growth of an out of control government, secure our borders, fix the terrible tax code, correct entitlement spending, or other worthwhile ideas. Instead the Republicans slid back to almost the place the Dems were and in some cases became worse. You did not lose the Congress because of the Iraq war, you lost it because you became what you said you would not. Are we to believe that the Republcans have changed? You have sixteen months to prove it. Then you had better keep your word.

Gotta a lot of Work
The GOP should have been holding MSM and Demonrats responsible all along. Now they supposedly are growing balls. I will await Judgement.
How about indictments against the Editors and Sr. Officiers of the NY Times and others who have compromised our National Security. And do keep attempting to find the true leakers - look to the Demonrats Administrators in still in Office. "And Hillary was upset when the Pentagon didn't want to include her into their plans regarding Iraq. She will just post them to her subordinates and tell them to insure they get leaked to the press. She can be trusted about as much as a snake."
In response to maintaining Core values, listed # 1 on your strategy. The GOP just violated the Core and gave in to the Demonrats with this new bill of ethics passed by both Houses in Congress. What about Transparency and Accountability. How about requiring 67 senators to stop the vote, etc. Now we have to undo what the Demonrats have done and what the GOP just helped them to again rape and pillage the tax payers. Not off to a Good Start. Flesh (sp) & Coburn stood up and looked mighty good. Where were the rest of the GOP? didn't ask about the other guys cause we already know that the Demonrats are a lost cause.
Hold the Demonrats responsible for their latest rule breakings in the House regarding vote gathering. Video demonstrates the truth. Now what do you do with those that lie and disregard the rules, repeatedly, ie, John Murtha, Nancy Pelosi. Can we get them indicted by a Grand Jury? They had to have broke a law somewhere. Remember that Accountability is a must, no matter who you are, you should be subject to the same rules as everyone else, especially our Leaders.

Rhetoric
Mr. Boehner, please explain why the Republicans continue to pass bad legislation. The recent bi-partisan ethics reform bill does nothing to reform ethics. I know that the Washington elites think that the common folks are stupid, but we're not.

Also, Republicans continue to compromise and approve pork legislation so that they can get their piece of the pie.

If you're serious about earning our trust again...

- Stop wasting our tax dollars and then talk about increasing taxes
- Cut off funding for all sanctuary states/cities; Even if Republicans don't have the votes to do it, at least try
- Stop wasting time passing meaningless laws (see above); Maybe it's time to eliminate useless laws
- Make English the only language for America; I'm sick of pandering to Hispanics who refuse to learn English and assimilate; If they can't speak English, they shouldn't be voting
- Propose constitutional amendments to fix the Kelo, McCain-Feingold and abortion decisions by the Supreme Communist Courts

We're way behond token gestures and we're not stupid. We'll be watching and hope that Republicans start doing something meaningful for this country and not your campaign contributors.

accountability
Let's get the text of bills on the floor of each house updated and on the internet overnight before the next session opens.

perhaps the repubs are right
last time they mis read the pubvlic and resorted to deficent spending as if tyring to imitate the dims. But communication is the key. Pelosi and reid made huge promises theyto date have not kept and like all dims befvore them probably feel the dumb electorate has already forgotten so they can return to their old spending habits. Ther president should be using the bully pulpit but he is not. But hoilding the dims accountable and highlighting every mis-step is the way to go. It seems the repubs are going to run on clearly defined issues. But we the voters need to be vigilant. If our congressman is dipping his fingers into the public taxes to enrich supporters and special interest groups that have financed his campaign, throw the bum out. Congress will not reform until they realize the voters will no longer tolerate the status quo, There are many issues the repubs can run on> the fair tax, border security, finding new energy sources and lessening our dependence on the arab's oil and getting rid of the illegals. This election can truly be one of clear choices and not one that just allows the dims under clinton pelosi and reid to run towards socialism.

Show me, don't tell me
Mr. Boehner's never-ending series of columns on TH are more a chest-beating attempt to scream, "Look what we're doing, look what we're doing," than they are substantive reports on anything I believe. And that's because -- I haven't seen any results. The Repubs had 6 years to demonstrate EXTREME fiscal conservation, and what did they do? They spent like Democrats and worse.

In my opinion, to date the Republicans have done little to DEMONSTRATE their platforms, and certainly nothing that distinguishes them from Democrats. Anyone can talk -- and in Washington, everyone does -- but I haven't seen any admirable action stem from either party in so long I can barely remember what an admirable action looks like. (Oh, except for Jeff Sessions and Jim Demint on the immigration bill -- and they were noteworthy indeed.)

What is up with this, "We" stuff
Unfortunately, for sitting Republican Senators and Congressmen the purge that was started on 2006 will continue in 2008.

The old Republican leadership has to go the way of the dinosaur. A colon cleanser if you will needs to apply to the remaining hangers on of the old money on Capital Hill.

Mr. Boehner's give it the old college try is falling on deaf ears and Americans will be saddled with higher taxes, a tanking economy because of the higher taxes (SCHIP and gov. bailout of the high risk mortgage fiasco) and Jimmy' Carter's malaise will find a fertile nesting spot on Capitol Hill.

Excuse me I have to go change the diaper on my 25 year old so he can qualify for SCHIP.

How times have changed
One of the confounding variables is that during the 45 or so years the Democrats were in power they successfully created a culture where government is seen as a viable solution to our problems, regardless of how ill-equipped it is.

So, whether it's health care or jobs or the wage disparities, we've been conditioned to see the government as the rightful agent for change. Concurrently, the free market has been vilified by the Democrats and their minions in the media and academia as a cruel system that inequitably distributes wealth, again, without any understanding of precisely who creates the jobs, takes the risks, etc.

In that context the Republicans have succumbed to the powerful political undertow by trying to win the race of government intervention. So, on immigration they were anemic until conservatives and like-minded independents nationwide screamed so loudly they finally listened. But the lengthy laundry list of other "problems" won't be so easy and the Republican leadership will feel obliged to "solve" those problems by...yes, more government.

Those who have read the Federalist Papers and other founding documents best understand that less government is more, that all conservatives truly want is for the federal government to seal the border, protect our Republic, keep taxes and regulation low, and let us succeed or fail on our own efforts.

That was the focus during the Reagan years, but our times are profoundly different in large measure because the electorate seems to be moving towards the mushy middle where government solutions have an innate--if wholly undeserved--legitimacy.

Boehner is a decent conservative and there are actually many others, but they are swimming upstream and have little hope of passing the kind of laws conservatives want, or from preventing the passage of those we hate.

It's just that simple and it's a travesty.

You Forgot One
Re-embrace conservatism and tear down the fence you've been building to keep conservatives out of the GOP. You're going to keep losing elections and seats until whoever is left running the party realizes, hey, maybe there's a reason for having a base.

One for the Gipper?
I am not sure this was what he had in mind. Churn up the vote for the ones who failed you, not quite.

Tell us its for the country now, when the callous politicians lost their way. The time to rebuild/regroup would have been before you lost it. What about that reflection time in the wilderness?

Right, that is arrogance! If anything, we and any descent Party should be complaining about paying the price. (But that would imply you listening.) I think they all moved to Missouri John -- reminds me of a “Dear John Letter”.

Yeah, right
"Our job over the course of the next 16 months is to rebuild Americans’ confidence in Republicans’ ability to deliver a government that is limited, honest, accountable, and responsive to their needs."

Well, you guys had how many years to do this? So now you think you will do all of this in 16 months in the minority? Get real.

"...effort to communicate bold, innovative solutions rooted in our principles."
And what principles do you have left Mr. Boehner after all these years of the garbage you, Bush, and the other elected Republicans have been up to?

"Through their unrelenting in their opposition to our proposals, whether it was providing tax relief to middle-class families, providing affordable health care to small businesses and their workers, reforming runaway entitlement programs..."

Reforming runaway entitlement programs? Are you serious Mr. Boehner? I'm not stupid and I recall that in 2003 you clowns added ANOTHER mostely unfunded entitlement program to the already unfunded entitlement programs.

I could go on, but no need. Like a previous poster said, 2006 was just the beginning to clean out the clowns in the Republican party. And another thing: I would not donate a dime to the RNC. I am considering a donation instead the Ron Paul out of principle...something Mr. Boehner is in short supply of.

Boehner's way.....
John Boehner's method is just to pass out bribe checks on the floor of the House.

When you can't win, just steal the outcome, right, sir?

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=a64ZIkmVPv_w&refer=us

Let's see some action
So Congressman, why did you not make it a party issue to join Rep. Jeff Flake on voting out the 1300-odd earmarks of the Defense Appropriations Bill? The conservatives of this country need to see action instead of mere words from the Republican party, particularly from the leadership. As House Minority Leader it is your job do whatever it takes to get the Republican representatives in the house to present a united front on core conservative values. You're correct that the Democrats did not win in '06; the Republicans lost. But lets also face facts here, the 109th Congress deserved to get voted out of office for acting like...well Congress, with all the negative connotations that that term inspires. And because of this, conservatives stayed home in '06 in droves.

But it all comes down to leadership. If you look at all the real Republican accomplishments over the last 27 years, they all came under the strong leadership of Reagan or Gingrich. So if you really want to 'earn' back the Congress, it's going to take action on the part of the Republican leadership.

Where none have gone before

Hey John, if you’re serious about non-stale ideas and aggressive pursuit: your job is not selling us, it is to sell the Republican leadership.(who doesn't seem to be buying) It’s the party leaders and folks like Mel Martinez who symbolizes the party louder than you. Looks like a grade-A pig in a poke to me.

Rah, Rah, Sis Boom Dah
Nice locker room speech, but let's get real. Keep it simple, something like, "Win the war. Confirm the judges. Cut the taxes. Control the spending. Secure the border." Oops, Hugh beat me to it. http://www.thoseshirts.com/hugh.html

The Republican leadership has pushed its conservative base aside, and precious little can be done to win them back. The GOP needs to figure that one out first--winning back its base--before setting its sights on Congress or the White House.

eddred
you are spot on target. I am a conservative and when I hear talking points from another republican politician I get beyond frustrated. But there is hope but how many of these die hard Republicans can't see what's infront of them. Ron Paul is the answer that we are looking for. I'm sorry but we are in trouble in this country and people are dead set on voting for issues that are not a "national concern." We need to give the states back their rights and the Republicans are just as guilty as the Democrats of expanding the size of gov't.

Sorry John, you had your chance. I will no longer believe what the Republicans have to say. The only real party that believes in smaller, less intrusive government is the Libertarian party.

The G.O.P.
Party professionals are eager to put forth ideas for recapturing the majority in Congress, but I've a message for them.

I known to acquaintances as "very conservative" don't give a damn about the Republican Party.

Decades ago I quit the party because I'd discovered it wasn't to be trusted to stick to conservative principles the instant that a given G.O.P. politican perceived some short-term gain that was to be derived by his abandonment of principle. Politicans such as this in the 109th Congress became big gvernment Republicans who sought to remain in office for no better reason than to continue to exercise power.

Senator Stevens' "Bridge to nowhere?" earmark epitomized the abuse of conservative power in office.

Other Republican politicans sold out not only conservative principles but also the national interest when knuckling under to the Chamber of Commerce crowd they jumped on the "comprehensive immigration reform" bandwagon without seriously addressing border security.

In short, the Republicans of the 109th Congress deserved to be kicked out-of-office. Had we let the rascals remain in office, they'd still be spending the taxpayer's dollar like drunken sailors on payday. And no effort would yet have been made to seriously address the problem of border security.

Likewise, I'm counting the days until Bush leaves office, although I voted for him for President twice. I wouldn't today again vote for him regardless I like some things he's done while in office. But I don't trust him to preserve U.S. sovereignty because of his obsessive affection for Latinos.

The long odds
"Our strategy for success is rooted in three key principles:

One, we will be proactive,… “in terms of communicating new, innovative solutions to the American public.”

Two, we will define and contrast our solutions with their stale ideas: “contrast them with Democrats’ tired love for bigger government and higher taxes.”

** I’m all ears …. remember eminent domain threatening private property rights no one seems willing to talk about. I think we need to see major improvement.

"And three, we will hold Democrats accountable at every opportunity —“And we will do so with all of the tools at our disposal.”

By John, you’ve got it, if you can produce substance that coincide with our “real concerns”.
For a start, looks like a winner. Now all you’ll have to do is convince Republican Party “leadership” on the “goods”(tools) first, then we’re all on the same page.

But the stagnant, stubborn, arrogant leadership – under Mel Martinez – is all about the same old crap, interests and k-street in tow running the show. Tell me how you are going to make this dream a reality? (with that in mind)

Love it
Thanks LMAO

Do you have this on PowerPoint?
"Be pro-active. Define contrasts. Think outside the box. Seize opportunity."

With all due respect, Mr. Congressman, are you freakin' kidding me!? Sounds like every bad management meeting I've ever been to.

The Road Back?
It doesn't involve you Johnny, where would you like to be dropped off? Please I implore the people of his district to give this crybaby a much needed vacation in the Primaries, he appears to be emotionally distraught much of the time and I think he should take it easier for the foreseeable future.

How about small government?
Try this:

- Stop trying to ban us from playing poker on the Internet...regulate for age compliance, but let Americans make their own decision (see my blog for details). We don't need a nanny state.

- Stop the spending. Not every ill has to be cured with a new government program. Remember what you all ran on in 1994?

- Try to remember it's OUR money, not yours.

here's an acid test for you
John Boehner says: "By reclaiming our position as the party of limited government and big ideas, we can succeed in earning back the majority."

Well, a BIG test is coming up for you, John:

The No Child Left Behind Act is set to expire soon. Bush has already said he's going to ask Congress to renew it.

Are congressional Republicans going to go along with this, or will they dare to oppose Bush on this in the middle of an election year? And if they go along with this, how can they then claim to the public that they believe in "limited government"?

Don't you get it, John? Your GOP standard-bearer right now is a self-styled "compassionate conservative" in the White House. And he has demonstrated repeatedly that he is NOT committed to limited government.

So you go argue with him, John.

Another skeptic here
As has been said earlier, this is a good locker room speech, but show us, don't tell us.

Actions speak a lot louder than words, and all I'm seeing in the column is a bunch of platitudes.

Heard it all the first time. We've been hearing this same line for many election cycles now, and all it ever turns out to be is a bunch of hollow promises.

That's why you guys LOST.

WORDS ARE PRECIOUS, DEEDS ARE FEW.......
Words are precious, deeds are few. This is how I have seen this. If the Republicans didn't learn from 1996, and 2006, then let me explain what went wrong.

Thr Republicans got complacent. They didn't have any cohones to stand up to the DemocRATS. They got lazy. They assumed that people would just like them. And they though that the voters would simply vote the lesser of the two evils. Vote for us, we are the only ones left.

The Conservative base sat home, and we are in a political quagmire now because of it. The current field of candidates haven't excited me so far. And if we end up with a Rudy McRomney, the Republicans are doomed.

So there you have it. We are tired of groomed candidates who were promised their time in the spotlight. Enough is enough.

Without appologies.....

for Jimmy D: Don't even go there
Jimmy D writes: "How about indictments against the Editors and Sr. Officiers of the NY Times and others who have compromised our National Security....Now what do you do with those that lie and disregard the rules, repeatedly, ie, John Murtha, Nancy Pelosi. Can we get them indicted by a Grand Jury? They had to have broke a law somewhere."

That's not up to the congressional Republicans. Issuing indictments would have to come from Bush's Justice Department.

And you're not going to persuade Bush to take such a radical step right now. Because he knows that the Democrats in Congress would retaliate by impeaching him, long before the cases are ever decided in court.

Bush threatening to throw Pelosi in jail would be the final straw to get Bush and Cheney impeached and likely removed from office, in which case Pelosi would become the new President. I can see even moderate REPUBLICANS being outraged at one of their fellow Congresspersons, even from the other party, being threatened with jail by the Executive Branch over political matters. Congress guards its prerogatives jealously and on an issue like this, Pelosi could count on most of the Congress standing up for HER, not for YOU.

So don't even go there. You would be provoking an American coup d'etat. Leave those kinds of fantasies for Tom Clancy and other political thriller authors.

Flow with go
There is an old saying to “keep your enemies close”. Republican members of congresses have taken this to an absurdity, forgetting who their friends (supporters) were. Now that many think there is not a dimes worth of difference between them, you have the unfortunate onus of “showing “(illustrating) where those differences are.

I regret so much of the blame falls on the HoR Republicans, but it is the nature of the beast – the closer to the people, the closer to the hot iron. Unfortunate, because we have issues in the Senate, where they have taken to blurring Parties to an all time high.

Back room deals and so-called “Bipartisan” camaraderie of Mc-legislating goes on. This is where real principles – any contrast of parties – has stooped to an all-time low. What’s legislated, mostly, is their elite derrieres into submission of special interests or all things politically correct.

Its also unfortunate last year’s midterm did not find all the “targets of opportunity” because of the Senate's terms. Should the fallout continue it might take some of the pompous Senators by surprise to face the public, once again? Poor things. Even McConnel may not be able to assuage the affects – with any luck, the right ones. And Democarps will be drooling for any victory/defeat there.

dims and their fantasies
three years ago there were stories about the death of the dimocraps as a party of power. Those on the left are now singing similar tales of the repubs demise. Both parties have over estimated their importance and misread the public. The dims will over-reach if they haven't done so already. Two years of pelosi and reid and the lack of accomplishments will undoubtedly change things again. No party is safe from voter wrath. But cvhanging the styatus quo will probably be bewtter for the voters. To rfemove some of the entrenched in both the house and senate can only benefit america.

General Schwartzkopf Why Not to Invade I

Contrasting Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
Boener needs to be good at contrasting because he's not a conservative at heart. He writes about "tax relief to middle class families, providing affordable health care to small businesses etc. and 'reforming' runaway entitlement programs." Not exactly liberal, but nowhere near just getting out of our way so we can live our lives.

And what Boener doesn't go into is his love of earmarks. Remember, in the campaign for the Republican House Leadership position, John Shadegg took the high ground and came in third. Shadegg then endorsed Boener as being a lesser evil than Roy Blunt.

While at it
we could ask advice from Democrats, too. (They'd be glad to give it as they like define everything - including actions they supported before they were against it, that is)

"Slavish"? -- Republicans had the majority and promptly ignored the base. Harriet Miers, now that was pandering to a "nutty base"!

Please allow me to add one thing
Mr. Boehner,

I hope that your vanity or your curiousity has you reading these comments. And I hope that you take them to heart. You and your ilk have not only destroyed the GOP, you are destroying the United States with your failed policies and failed leadership. Wake up, please--and I don't mean take a poll and figure out how to garner a few more votes. Wake up and start advancing conservative values and practices that have been proven to work.

hold Democrats accountable
When will Republicans hold Republicans accountable?

Given this article, I'd say never.

That is the problem Mr. Boehner.

Survey says
Give us all a moment to tally up all the credible support in reform talk....lets see....how many for, again....? (Error 0101; window will now close)

The Real Problem
I think that the real problem here is that many of you guys are not getting it. You sent a message last year when you stayed home (I say you because I voted to keep the real socialists out of power - no blood on my hands), and yet after all that and seeing what the House and John have tried to do, your still not satisfied.

Did you ever think that maybe they got the message? Oh, you want results. Well that is going to be kind of hard since YOU GAVE CONGRESS BACK TO THE SOCIALISTS TRAITOR DEMOCRATS.

Now I'm not saying that the GOP did not screw up last time, they did. But my God in heaven they were a thousand times better than the Democrats. I think John got the message and I am proud of our minority in the House. They are doing the best they can and returning to principles under the rule of the prom queen Pelosi.

There is not third party to the rescue. Either go vote to keep out the socialists or don't complain. Remember a vote not cast is a vote cast for the socialists.

Drew
You know, I can agree to an extent. I won’t say there is no difference, as some do. But any disenfranchised voters now need something to vote for, not only something to vote against. Bush recently uttered such a comment(if he's sincere) We can all be against the liberal-left agenda. People want something to support not oppose. (should only our opposition unify us?) I don’t think a third party is a silver bullet either.

Minority Party for a generation
The GOP strategy: Focus on the Democrats. Not gonna work.

Strategy
Whoa now, what exactly are el democratos doing? Anti-Bush, anti-administration, anti-Iraq, anti-nominees, anti-tax cuts, anti-conservative. Lets throw impeachment(2or none)into the mix also. Seems Dems are far above the anti-party, gettting recognition for it - and it seems to have worked in November. They are obsessed, IMO. Why have a majority with that "agenda", who knows? They seem to think it raises money, like the anti-war fundraising does. (raising money on their disagreement with US mission)

So for being a majority, Democrats are awfully focused on the right (vast right wing conspiracy) and appears their candis are running against Bush. They can be known as the anti-party, who cares? But Repubs are in the minority as of now -- committees, chairs, agenda -- we have to play the hand dealt.

Are you willing to sacrifice?
Are you? Because that is what it will take. If you actually want people to vote Republican then you need to convince a lot of incumbents NOT TO RUN. If the dinosaurs were to step aside "for the good of the party" then THAT would prove you're serious, atoning for your sins, and committed to a fresh start.

Or you can have your old dogs promise new tricks and see how many believe.

That's What I'm Talking About
Its not that I want the status quo of the big government Republicans but look at the Democrats and tell me having them in power is not bad for the United States.

They want to ruin healthcare with nationalization, destroy any hope we have to be energy independent with enviornmential nonsense, open our borders, raise our taxes, spend more money, more earmarks (true the GOP had more but the Dems are off to a healthy start), endless investigations, liberal Ginsberg judges, a complete break down of federalism, more regulation to drive jobs overseas, gay marriage, and the list goes on and on and on.

Now I don't want to live in socialist European style country. The GOP aren't great but they are better than this. Even when a few RINOs conspired with the Democrats in the Senate to open our borders, the House stepped up under John's leadership to prevent that bill's passing if it got out of the Senate.

I mean for crying out loud the Democrats STOLE a vote from us couple of weeks ago to deny taxpayer money to illegals. That is not the party I want in charge of the government. The Democrats are a threat to national security, any party is that wants the nation defeated in a war to claim political victory.

RHETORIC V. REALITY
John Boehner can say all he wants to anyone who will listen. However, true blue conservatives are like elephants. They never forget.

Conservatives will never forget:

1. The greatness of Ronald Reagan, whose legacy Rockefeller Republicans would like to purge from the Republican Party.

2. President Bush and too many Republican members of Congress showed their true colors on immigration issues as Rockefeller Republicans - red, white, and green, NOT red, white, and blue.

3. President Bush and the Republican majority expanded the size and scope of the Federal Government in the form of No Child Left Behind, Medicare prescription drug coverage, McCain-Feingold, which abridges free speech, and Homeland Security.

4. President Bush and the Republican majority created "earmarks" for everything under the sun.

5. President Bush and the Republican majority failed to enact legislation to open up ANWR and other promising oil reserves now off limits to production so they could be producing oil for Americans. If domestic oil reserves were opened up to full production, we would not need the Middle East for oil. We could then tell them "go fly a kite".

What a Sham
Wake up, America!

Democrats and Republicans are one and the same. Pointing out any negligible differences is only fodder to keep us Americans asleep regarding our real enemy...those power elite who have a larger goal in mind. Ever hear the phrase New World Order come off the lips of our beloved President Bush. It's not even a secret any more....

Please look into the best presidential candidate to come along in at least 100 years, one who will restore our faith in a strong America---Ron Paul.

Before it's too late.

Republican control of Congress
Not until the Republicans VOW never to present or support another earmark do Congressman Boehner's words impress this Mainer.
The latest "ethics" bill to pass is a complete sham.

Majority?
Mr. Boehner, if you do manage to win back the majority, of what purpose is it if a sizable number of the Republicans are RINOs?

The Republican National Committee, if it is true to this agenda you espouse, must stop supporting candidates and incumbents that are obstructionist in the least, and transparently against the aforesaid agenda at most.

I would point most directedly to the support for Arlen Spector by the RNC and GW Bush, against a true Republican, Pat Toomey.

This uncritical support for candidates simply because they have registered as Republicans, while acting like Democrats, is counterproductive to the cause you espouse.

Even when the Republicans were in the majority, their ability to effect any true conservative agenda was hampered or destroyed by the presence of RINOs who more often than not voted with the opposition.

Therefore, a fourth part of your strategy must be to withdraw support from those who do not espouse Republican principles, and actually use the Whips of both chambers to tell RINOs outright: "If you don't go along with us on this matter, you will not get a penny from the RNC."

Money
Last night on the phone I told the girl calling from the RNC that my check book was going to stay closed until the Republicans started walking the walk of Conservatism. I will not fund Democrat Lite. If we all do that at some point they will have to pay attention.

GOP= Whig Party
The Republican Party under GWB seems intent on political suicide. Pandering to citizens of other countries illegally in our country while telling us we must be vigilantes if we object to illegal aliens ignoring our borders and laws. Mel Martinez is RNC Chairman to ensure an open borders candidate in '08. The cheap labor express will be kept running, regardless of the consequences, to party or country. GOP-RIP

Republicans, The Slow Path To Socialism
If the Republican party is really serious about taking back the ‘Majority’ in 2008, return this Federal Republic back to a Constitutional Authorized sized government. Since Reagan, I have truly had to hold my nose voting for Republicans. Reagan had the fortitude to challenge a tax and spend House and Senate. I am forced to vote Republican because the option of the Democrats is even worse in my worldview. Both sides of the isle are fixated on vote buying schemes by butchering the IRS laws beyond repair and creation/expansion of government programs not authorized by the Constitution. There is going to be a point where America becomes too socialist and the wealthy and high-achievers will leave this country and seek a country that does not penalize achievement. A good example is France, Nicolas Sarkozy is lowering the government burden on the wealthy and high-achievers and is begging his fellow wealthy and high-achiever French expatriates to come back.

TruLib
You are absolutely correct. Take it one step further and force the party leadership to get rid of the RINO's.

Change comes from within.

Orchard story
Lets have a moment of silence for the terminally ill GOP. I think it was when its roots to conservatism were killed off, and the fruit began to change, it should have been evident to anyone paying attention. It morphed past the lesser of the evils until people noticed the “lack of contrast” in GOP actions.

But it nurtured its corporate food sources while ignoring those conservative roots, and grass roots. After all, with its new k-growth it did not seem to need them anymore once it gained “power over the orchard”. The dreams and great hopes for it are about all we have left. It ran amuck and began to infect the rest of the trees. Pretty soon the lesser of evils was not much “lesser” anymore.

Yes, many eulogized the misery of the disease, while they virtually ignored the onslaught of liberal socialism coming down the streams. Soon GOP became the lesser minority, along with the lesser evil – sort of self-prophetic in nature. Still it now longs for its growth days as the best in show of the orchard. But the lesser, in the end, was not much greater or proper match to the disease unleashed on the orchard.

Rest well, GOP, get well soon, recover and nurture those roots, it’s a long raod to recovery, one step at a time. We would appreciate the help.

While I keep hearing statements like
"No one on the left really wants America to loose in Iraq." From presidential candidates, rather than holding people accountable for saying things like;

"Well, that will be troubling for us," in answer to the question -- What if the September report shows great advancement and success in Iraq -- Then I know we haven't got people willing to hold the left accountable, and, therefore, willing only to play to not loose, rather than playing to win.

I will always contend that the biggest mistake made by the Bush Admistration was, and always will be, the "NEW TONE!"

Bull%$#@

Thank you, Rep. Boehner
Thank you Rep. Boehner for a great column.

I participated in a conference call last night with Rep. Flake and the Americans for Prosperity Foundation. We were all disappointed that Republicans in the House and Senate generally have not given up their "need" for pork barrel spending via earmarks. Rep. Flake did say that you do not seek earmarks but to be the Minority Leader, on the way to earning our vote, you must lead the rest of the Republicans away from earmarks.

The quickest to do that is to assure the the Republicans in the House support President Bush's vetos of spending bills.

You will earn our votes if you, and the others, give up earmarks.

Your are most correct in your assessment, and I was naive and suffering from a bout of not engaging Brain, before posting. Sorry, I got mad, angry and confused about how our Government is being led by both parties. I got angry when I saw the votes in the House for this latest joke of an Ethics Bill, and realized that the GOP has just violated, again, all we hold dear. Bush's & the GOP took our votes for granted, back in 2004 and again in 2006. That no conservative could possibly vote for Democrats, (Good reason to add a few more parties to the mix), so they refused to listen to their base. I remember Bush returning from overseas promising to get the Amnesty bill back on track, in direct violation of what We the People wanted. Such Arrogance. Now, all I read is how much of a Genius Karl Rove is and was in getting Bush elected, and all I am thinking is how Karl Rove & George Bush, with a lot of help from the GOP in Congress, has destoyed the GOP. It is a shame that we risk the Demonrats & Hillary, who are most definitely worse, before we can right the ship that was once referred to as the Grand Ole Party.

Gabby's right
Boehner skipped over the most important thing and that is illegal INVASION.Don't worry folks he won't read your posts, after all he is a congressman and doesn't have time for peons

Republicans
will never retake govt. if they don't quit foaming at the mouth and get busy. You guys have lost your objectivity.

Tom- great post!

I like what you have written. I am not convinced yet your ideas reflect other republicans. Several time in the past few weeks, I have responded to state and national callers for the republican party that I won't contribute until such time that I feel you are honestly on the right path. How about starting with elimination of earmarks. Republicans are not doing so well in this area.

The problem is...
once government starts handing out goodies the game is over. How do you stop social spending? The Democrats would have a field day if any party tried to seriously adjust the way the budget is spent. The MSM would crucify any party that tried to reduce socialistic programs.

The only way to cut spending is to campaign on cutting and eliminating spending on socialistic programs. If the party then gets elected it had better do what it said or the end will be a sure thing.

twiddle dee and tweedle dum
Republicans will have trouble from now on as long as their slogan is "Yea were not too good and we sell you out now and then but hey, look at them(democrats) their really bad!

You want to get elected?
Then don't talk about "reforming" anything: that just puts more loops in the Gordian Knot. CUT the knot with fundamental changes and K.I.S.S.

Campaign on this: I will fight to the death and never, never, never compromise on:

Abolish the IRS and institute the Fair Tax.
Tamperproof National ID, and no social services without it, excepting only emergency medical care.
No anchor babies.
Drill ANWR.
Hold Congress to the same ethical standards as agents of the FBI.
Fire the judge with the $54 million pants.

How many here would support that platform?

I'll support your platform, G!

And furthermore I'll ask Representative Boehner to do all he can to bring that flawed "vote" before recessing to its rightful conclusion! That should be #1 on your "to-do" list when you return to DC.

Then...pay attention to what you read here on TH. There are a lot of well-thought-out suggestions from some intelligent posters. You ought to give them serious consideration.

The war was NOT the problem in November.

ETHICS, or rather the lack thereof, was a big issue.

Earmarks - NO MATTER FOR WHICH PARTY - are totally off-putting to the American public and it is high time to clean up the Congressional act.

We would like some immediate action on the Border Fence - get it started NOW! Have a goal of so many miles completed by the end of this year...that would get the attention of millions of voters!

Get rid of federal funds going to sanctuary cities!!

Start deporting every illegal the local police can find! Let the locals work with ICE - together they can get the job done!

I especially like your suggestion about health care and hope you will continue to speak AGAINST a federal program...that is NOT the answer.

Rep. Boehner, stay strong - this will let us know you are working to earn the majority back. You are in my prayers!

I did the same last night! Usually don't answer "unknown caller" calls, but was glad I did. I politely explained why I was NOT giving this year...it felt quite good actually :-)

My $$ are going to individual candidates from now on - the party did so many shady things last go-round - one example was not supporting a conservative mayor in Rhode Island who was challenging #1 RINO Chaffee - and we lost!

"The Real Problem

Remember a vote not cast is a vote cast for the socialists."

Great post - hope you don't mind my putting it out once again!

You echo my thoughts re: those who sat out the last election. Let's hope things are different in 08!
