Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This week, House Republicans were united in backing down an attempt by Democrats to rewrite House rules to make it easier to raise taxes on middle-class families and increase government spending without having to vote and be held accountable. We stared them down, and we won.

House Republicans used a series of procedural motions designed to bring business on the House floor to a halt. Democrats are already pushing to raise taxes on every American, not to mention the billions and billions in excessive, unnecessary spending. Now they want to duck responsibility for it? We won’t let it fly.

At issue are a series of House rules that have served Congress well since 1822, and are based on a manual Thomas Jefferson wrote for himself to use while President of the U.S. Senate. The last time they were changed was 185 years ago -- when Jefferson was still alive and James Monroe was President. Every Congress since has been able to operate under these rules, which allow the minority party to expose flaws in and make substantive improvements in legislation considered on the House floor. Every Congress, that is, until the 110th.

Republicans have used the “motions-to-recommit” (MTR) allowed by House rules to amend and substantially improve the weaknesses in underlying Democratic bills. They’ve enabled Republicans to pass measures protecting innocent American passengers from being subject to frivolous civil lawsuits when they report potential terrorist activity (prompted by public outrage over last November’s “flying Imams” incident). They enabled us to protect U.S. military recruiters from discrimination by federally-funded colleges and universities, to strengthen terrorist screening programs, and more. All with the support of rank-and-file Democrats.

On March 27, Congressional Quarterly (CQ) reported that: “Now that Republicans have shown they can use new House rules against the new Democratic majority that wrote them, the Democrats want new rules.” This week, Democratic leaders tried to make good on that desire, quietly moving to shut down Republicans without any notice and eliminate a rule that’s forced them to take some tough votes.

It’s a far cry from where they were last November when House Democratic leaders promised the most open, ethical Congress in history. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-Ca.) said in December, “[W]e promised the American people that we would have the most honest and most open government and we will.”

And House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D.-Md.) told Congress Daily he wanted to give “opposition voices and alternative proposals the ability to be heard and considered on the floor of the House.”

Speaker Pelosi once went so far as to say she was willing to lose votes if it meant ensuring her House was the “most open, ethical” in history:

“In perhaps the biggest break from the current practices of GOP leaders, Pelosi said she would be willing to lose votes on the floor.”

“‘I certainly would not say that we can't bring things to the floor because we'll lose…’”

So much for being willing to lose some votes. Perhaps before they game the system by changing the rules to their liking, Democratic leaders should ask their own members why they are voting in droves for our Republican proposals.

Why are Democrats against Democracy? The attempted rules changes strike at the very heart of what it means to be a representative in United States Congress. The American people elect each Member to represent them with the knowledge that we all have the opportunity to actively participate and ensure their voices are heard. Scrapping rules that have existed since the first days of the republic designed to make sure the House remains a deliberative body -- and not simply a machine of the Speaker and Committee Chairmen -- would do lasting damage to the institution. I won’t allow it.

Democrats need to be held accountable for the tax-and-spend policies they pursue -- the high tax, high spend policies the American people do not want. House Republicans stood united to make sure that happens.

Keep at it
You and other Republicans need to keep at it. You have a lot of ground to make up for the mess you helped create during the last six years. Republicans are going to have to work to show me that they believe in a smaller government, an open government and a responsible government.

All show and no substance
And if the Democrats had used procedural methods to shut down the House a few months ago, the Republicans would have done what?

We'll believe you when Alaska's Bridge to Nowhere gets buried forever.

Also hard to believe that you have seen the light of responsibility and ethics with YOUR appointments of Calvert and Feeney.

Try listening to the REAL conservatives of your party who are opposed to those appointments!

Good work...
Thankfully, the GOP proved they weren't going to let the left destroy accountability by defeating this nonsensical, disengenuous matter.
Now stand up to them on the ironically named "Fairness Doctrine".
The left LIED to the American people and you caught them.
Now trumpet that from the pulpit loud and clear - lest the MSM allow this transgression to go unreported or cast as some Republican power move instead of what it was.
So what was it?
It was an attempt to stifle any possibility of the minority party on the hill objecting to, discussing, opposing, or exposing issues related to taxation.
Once again, the Democrats are in dire need of a history lesson.
This nation was founded by people who strongly disagreed with the idea of taxation without representation - which is exactly what the left was aiming for. They want to be able to tax the pants off of this country, cripple the economy, redistribute wealth and all without allowing the minority to discuss the matter, which is unprecedented. And contrary to the concept of a free republic.
Please feel free to use this as your tag line. Hammer them, Mr. Boehner.
Hammer them hard.
Then get your buddies up there to man up as well.
It's high time to bring the fight to them instead of allowing them to continue to create scandal and controversy where none exists in an effort to paint the right as crazy, stupid, and irresponsible.
The left is dirty right now. Go take advantage of the fact that their dirt is obvious, clear, and a strong statement as to the sincerity of the left.
They aren't interested in proper government, they are interested in pure power. This is reprehensible and the American public deserve to hear about it!

It is about time
I am glad to see you are standing up. If Republicans had stood up and acted like Conservatives for the last ten or so years we would not be in the mess we are in today. Our elected leaders were more interested in making friends with the Democrats than pushing the values we elected you for. We know what to expect from the left, we did not expect large members of our ranks to join them, yet they thought that was the way to stay in power. Why did President Reagan get elected? He was a Conservative and was proud to let the world know it. Why did we win landslides in '94? We ran as Conservatives. When did our Conservative leaders forget to learn from the past? Americans want to be inspired, they want to be reassured that we are the Greatest country and force for good the world has ever known. By our leaders moving to the left, we took our greatest asset and neutralized it ourselves. Peace is never gained by capitulation and it is time Conservatives understand that and stop being ashamed of what we believe in, regardless of what the media says.

GOP staring down Boehner...
Lets see who blinks.

A popular conservative blog will step up its efforts this week to force Republican leaders to pull Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) from the powerful Appropriations Committee. In addition, the website will begin a coordinated effort to target members of the GOP Steering Committee in order to save the party from electoral disaster in 2008, the editor in chief of the site said Sunday.

“This party of ours must be pruned and it must be pruned by those of us who care about it before meeting the butchers sheers in the hands of the voters again in 2008," Erick Erickson, editor in chief of http://www.redstate.com wrote to The Hill. “If they refuse to hear that change is needed, we will wipe them out and replace them with new blood that recognizes that a corrupt party rejected by the voters will not be embraced again by the voters until the corruption is purged.”

I support your efforts BUT...
I support your efforts, Congressman Boehner, but the Republican Party has a lot of work to do after the appalling borrowing and spending that occurred in Congress during your majority. Its not just the Democrats, its almost all Members of Congress, who are guilty of out-of-control spending, who refuse to address the looming financial meltdown of the entitlement programs, who refuse to reduce the size, cost and impact of the Federal Government and who refuse to stop passing the buck to future generations when it comes to the country's finances.
This is a start - you have a long way to go.

Lying lynn
yay your here or awake anyway as it seems by your post that you have been asleep for quite a few years.

The Republican Party has lost its way
Is the Republican Party Out of Step with Ron Paul?
http://forthecause.us/

In the second Republican debate, Ron Paul again distinguished himself from the field of 10 candidates by not going along with the party line on Iraq, the war on terror, taxes, national security, deficit spending, government growth and just about every other issue that came up. He did it by providing clear examples of what traditional conservatism is all about, drawing on the intention of the framers of the Constitution, and lessons learned from previous administrations.

He favors dismantling the Departments of Education, Energy, and Homeland Security. He even went so far as to suggest that the heavy hand of American foreign policy in the Middle East was partly responsible for the 9-11 attacks and continues to be the reason for terrorist threats against Americans. During the debate, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani expressed outrage and asked if Ron Paul would like to withdraw his statement about 9-11. Ron Paul did not back down.

He refuted the widely held notion that Islamic Fundamentalists hate America for its freedom and equal treatment of women. He said they hate us because we are on their turf in the Middle East and for bombing Iraq for last 10 years. He said we should treat other nations as we would like to be treated ourselves.

For statements like these, Fox News' Sean Hannity and GOPAC chairman Micheal Steele agreed that Ron Paul should be excluded from further debates. They quickly dismissed the opinions of viewers who took the trouble to vote by text messaging their choice for the winner of the debate. Interestingly, Giuliani came in third in the poll, behind Ron Paul's second place finish.

So who's voting in these polls? Largely young people under 30 years of age, who have mastered the art of text messaging on cell phones and other mobile devices, but who seem keenly interested in the future of our country.

As for Ron Paul... we've never seen a candidate like this. His ideas deserve further representation in the debates. Meanwhile, take a look at what Ron Paul said in the debate that "conservatives" found so offensive. This is followed by Sean Hannity's heated questioning of Ron Paul. Notice how Ron Paul offers a factual basis for his beliefs, whereas Hannity resorts to his typical appeal to emotion.

Liberty? Not Likely
Liberty has gone around writing long love letters to the odious Ron Paul, the man who blamed the U.S. for 9/11. Need I say anymore? Years ago, John Stormer wrote a book called "None Dare Call It Treason." Some dare. Rudy dared.

steve

Huh?
To hear rhe right tell it, Democrats blame US for 9/11. I am glad it has now been straightened out and that it was the right blaming 9/11 on Americans.

Steve
LOL. I handed out a ton of those Stormer books for my parents when I was a child. Clearly, you haven't even read it, if you support the likes of the pro-amnesty, baby-killer, anti-gun, Giuliani.

Give it a rest, Steve. Everyone knows your story.

By the way Steve, Dr. Paul did NOT blame America for 9-11. This lie is getting rather old and tiring, frankly. Please inform yourself below.

Goooliani owes Dr. Paul a big apology.

Press Release

Why Hasn’t Rudy Giuliani Read the 9-11 Commission Report?

May 16, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ARLINGTON, VA – During the "First in the South" GOP debate in South Carolina last night, one thing was made clear: Rudy Giuliani does not understand how to keep America safe.

When Congressman Ron Paul, who has long served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, explained how 50 years of American interventionism in the Middle East has helped compromise our national security, Giuliani interrupted saying he had "never heard anything so absurd." This statement is particularly troubling coming from the former mayor who tries to cast himself as a security expert, since Dr. Paul's point comes directly from the bi-partisan 9-11 Commission Report.

"Rudy Giuliani has tip-toed around the issues of abortion, guns and marriage. The only issue he has left is security, and he doesn't even get that right," said campaign chairman Kent Snyder. "It is clear from his interruption that former Mayor Giuliani has not read the 9-11 Commission Report and has no clue on how to keep America safe."

I also recommend watching this short video.

Well said

Ron
He didn't say that at all. He just thinks we should take a look at our foreign policy. It wasn't too long ago that all conservatives believed in the very same foreign policy of non-intervention that Dr. Paul advocates. It was always the Democrats who wanted to nation-build and use the military to carry out UN sanctions. NOT US.

The media is spinning this 9 ways to nothing; however, their spin has nothing at all to do with what Dr. Paul said or believes. His statements came directly out of the 911 Commission report and CIA Intelligence reports. Rudy just capitalized on the opportunity to spout off his pre-released indignation to attempt to make him shine for the only thing about him that could in the remotest sense, be considered conservative.

So, has Rudy not read the 911 Commission report or is he just attempting to lead the American public astray?

Here are a few articles about the whole deal:

Ron Paul IS the candidate who believes in that and has proven it through years of voting history. He is the REAL conservative in the pack. Why do you think they're trying to take him out anyway?

Oh, and Lynneeee....
"Your dumbocratic Congress has a LOWER APPROVAL rating than the president."

If you'll recall, the Republicrats weren't doing so hot either when they had control. That's why so many were voted out of office.

Just the facts....

It's time to return to our conservative roots. Do you remember them?

- limited constitutional government
- personal privacy
- personal responsibility
- strong national defense
- fiscally responsible government
- individual liberty

Conservatism is alive and well in America and it's about time we took a stand for our country! It's now or never, folks.

Lynne
"I was just saying that Paul is toast!"

Just for you....

smile.....

A little late Boehner
if a few RINOs had stood for integrity and fiscal responsibility a year ago you would probably still have the majority in Congress.

Guts
The real test for Boehner and the house is the immigration bill. If Boehner can kill a tax bill he can kill the AMNASTY bill.

liberty...
No offense to you or your obvious choice for President, but Ron Paul has about as much of a chance as you do to be President.
SOME of what he says makes sense, the rest is fluff.
And it doesn't matter how hard he tries to explain it or how many times you post your glowing endorsement of Paul (or his press releaseses), he shot himself in the foot.
He didn't blame the US, he blamed our foreign policy.
Who is to blame for 9/11?
Al Qaeda.
That's it.
There is simply no jusitification for a terrorist group to kill so many Americans by flying planes into the world trade center.
Period.
End of story.
He may have been trying to explain the error of our foreign policy, but instead he came off as someone who wishes to place blame, maybe even partial blame, on the American people.
That is what he said.
That was what people's perception of his statement was.
See, had he said that our foreign policy inspired the attackers to senselessly attack innocent people in 9/11, it would have been different.
But he didn't distinguish his point clearly.
I don't think there is a townhall regular that doesn't know that you support Ron Paul.
Enough already.
He's not going to win the primary and he certainly won't win the Presidency.
So why waste your time trying to pretend that he has even an outside shot?
He barely registers in the polls and most americans haven't even heard of him.

"So who's voting in these polls?"
For all you Ron Paul fans.

Liberty claims that those voting in these polls, in which Ron Paul finished second, are mostly 30 and under.

So I have the following points.

I don't generally consider the political advice of teenagers and twenty-somethings to be wise or experienced.

It is my understanding from another source (Sean Hannity) that much of Paul's support in this poll came from anti-war leftist bloggers, who are in essence crossing party lines to influence the Republican nominating process.

Despite Liberty's spin, Paul did not merely say radical Islam was angry because our troops were on Arab soil (his native Saudi Arabia). He also gave us the liberal pablum of how we must talk to them and find out why they're angry. This puts him somewhat to the left of Barack Obama on this issue.

Even if all Paul said was that radical Islam was angry because our troops were on Arab soil, this doesn't wash with historical fact. The Ayatollah Khomeini called us "The Great Satan" in 1979, long before any US troops were sent, even to Lebanon. And Osama bin Laden declared war on the US in 1986, five years BEFORE the Persian Gulf War and the establishment of US bases in Saudi Arabia to patrol the No-Fly zones over Iraq.

As to Paul's other, authentic conservative credentials I say this. If I met someone who was attractive, intelligent, amenable, and compatible with me in every way, I still could not marry that person if he was man. I can only marry a woman. And so it is with Ron Paul, the war on terror, and my vote. Regardless of how much I may agree with him, even admire him, on other issues, his position on terror and his apparent ignorance of its history disqualify him from consideration for my vote. I can only vote for someone who is strong against terror.

Once again I agree with Lynne. After his performance in the last debate his candidacy is toast.

And I also agree with Michael Steele and Sean Hannity. The Republican Party is better served if he is excluded from the next debate and kept off the Primary ballots. He is, after all, not a Republican at all but a Libertarian who is trying to use the Republican Party to further his own political ambitions and objectives.

Let him be truly honest and run as a Libertarian.

BTW - Liberty, why do you spend so much time, space, and effort trashing Giuliani if these poll results are so valid? As you pointed out, Paul finished ahead of Giuliani in this poll. According to the poll, Mitt Romney won the debate. When can we expect you to start trashing him for the crime of beating Paul in a skewed poll?

"Your legends in your own minds"
That's great...when you are finished patting yourself on the back, perhaps you could put some attention into fighting the immigration amnesty bill that is on its way to be shoved down the throat of the American people. Do you Republicans learn anything from history? Do you have any clue why you lost the last election? ITS BECAUSE YOU REFUSE TO FIGHT THE CONGRESSIONAL LIBERALS (I.E. DEMOCRATES)! So long as you continue down the path of the arrogant and out of touch politicians a la John McCain, you guys are going to stay in the minority for another 40 years. WAKE UP AND FIGHT OR MAKE WAY FOR BETTER MEN!

Ron "cut and run" Paul is a whackjob...

"Michigan GOP leader wants Paul barred from future debates

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The chairman of the Michigan Republican Party said Wednesday that he will try to bar Ron Paul from future GOP presidential debates because of remarks the Texas congressman made that suggested the Sept. 11 attacks were the fault of U.S. foreign policy.

Michigan party chairman Saul Anuzis said he will circulate a petition among Republican National Committee members to ban Paul from more debates. At a GOP candidates' debate Tuesday night, Paul drew attacks from all sides, most forcefully from former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, when he linked the terror attacks to U.S. bombings.

"Have you ever read about the reasons they attacked us? They attack us because we've been over there. We've been bombing Iraq for 10 years," Paul said.

Anuzis called the comments "off the wall and out of whack.""

Ron "cut and run" Paul is an out of touch whackjob, just like his supporters.

"Murtha accused of rules violation

Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) threatened to deny any further spending projects to a Republican who challenged him over an earmark last week, the GOP is charging — a potential violation of House rules that could cause a spike in partisan tensions.

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), who questioned money that Murtha inserted into an intelligence bill last week, turned the tables Thursday night by saying he would call for Murtha to be reprimanded for violating House rules.

Rogers plans to insert a transcript of their exchange in the Congressional Record to document the potential violation. His resolution will also require a House vote to reprimand Murtha for his comments, according to a draft received by The Politico. Rogers is expected to file it on Monday.

It does not call for an investigation by the Ethics Committee.

'The way I do it'

According to the draft resolution, Murtha shouted at and chastised Rogers on the House floor Thursday for offering a motion last week to challenge $23 million Murtha requested in an intelligence bill.

Murtha had requested the money to prevent the administration from shuttering the National Drug Intelligence Center in Johnstown, Pa., which is part of Murtha’s district.

“I hope you don’t have any earmarks in the defense appropriations bills because they are gone, and you will not get any earmarks now and forever,” Murtha told Rogers, according to the draft transcript given to The Politico.

“This is not the way we do things here — and is that supposed to make me afraid of you?” Rogers replied.

“That’s the way I do it,” Murtha said."

How do you think that vote will go? ;)
