Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

“If it is to be, it is up to me.” Those ten two-letter words express one of the most powerful ideas you’ll ever hear, the black pastor said. They got him through time and again when his life was on the line in the civil rights struggles of the 1950s, he recalled.

As the old man told his story to a college audience that day in the ‘80s, lives were changed. I know mine was. His Christian faith was deep, but this declaration of self-determination wasn’t religious. It exemplified an ethic of personal responsibility that anyone can freely choose. What a keynote for 2009.

The new year finds our country in a tough recession and on tricky ground politically. Democrats’ control of the executive and legislative branches carries the danger of overreach and the risk of people relying too much on government. Republicans’ exclusion from power may tempt them to sulking and sour grapes. Expecting more from ourselves individually is the right resolution for all of us this January.

Few of us could name the president of India or the junior senator from Vermont. We don’t know because we don’t care. How much more does it really matter – be honest – that Obama will be US president the next four years, or that New York's next junior senator will be around for at least the next two? Politics is important, but it’s not the end-all. Thinking it is can paralyze us.

Is there fascination in short-term stories like the scramble to replace Sen. Hillary Clinton, Congress convening, and Barack Obama’s inauguration? Sure. But for perspective, we should also focus on longer-term goals. I’d urge fellow conservatives – and open-minded liberals – to set four goals for the coming four years, none of them dependent on electoral majorities.

By 2013, we can be an America that thinks differently about defense, learning, dignity, and decency. This would so alter the political playing field that both parties must change accordingly. New thinking could reveal new possibilities and raise up new leaders. Here’s a sketch.

One: A Churchillian defense alarm is needed. Neighbor to neighbor, the word must go out that radical Islam is no less a threat to our survival than Nazism and Soviet communism were. Patriot voices must warn of the aggressive aims of Russia and China. The choice is awakening or servitude.

Two: A parents’ revolt against classroom fraud is imminent. Downfall awaits the naked emperor of teachers unions that don’t teach and college faculties that indoctrinate, all at gold-plated prices. “Let our kids learn” is the new civil rights battle cry. Who will light this tinderbox?

Three: Let a reborn belief in the dignity of work, saving, sound money, and self-reliance arise from the economic ashes of 2008. Hold up deficits, debt, inflation, and something-for-nothing to public shunning. Away with economic make-believe.

Four: Americans know decency when they see it, and many want to see more of it. What corrupts children, demeans women, degrades men, divides families, and corrodes civilization doesn’t belong in the public square. Marginalize it with shame, not laws. It’s time to retire political correctness and bring back old-fashioned disgust.

Noble ideals of goodness, the dignity of a dollar earned, the honest love of learning, and the warning to all enemies, “Don’t tread on me” – such attitudes used to be as American as the flag and as bipartisan as the Bill of Rights. Why can’t they be again? If we worked as hard at spreading them as we do at electing candidates, they could.

True, attitudes change slower than policies. Obama’s first 100 days will bring policy changes we may not like. It could be a long four years. But our four goals have the facts on their side, and facts are stubborn things. My old pastor friend would say it’s up to us.

interesting
So the first thing that Republicans need to do is to sufficiently scare people into being afraid of everyone. Apparently Republicanism requires thinking that the US is about the weakest country around.

And then numbers 2 and 3 seem at odds with each other. Why would anyone who knows history take Republicans seriously as the party of balanced budgets?

Simply Won't be Popular
These ideas sound like Classical Liberalism or "Crunchy Con" Conservativism as preached by Rod Dreher, Paul Weyrich and others. Sadly, you can't stuff the genie back in the bottle. You can't un-spoil children, unless it is through traumatic, life altering experiences. Only a period of social upheaval, unrest and deprivation can purge Americans of their materialism and self-absorption.

As horrible as it sounds, there will be blood before there will be true liberty.

None of these
fine ideals will work as long as "Liberals" are embedded in our system!

Go back to sleep, Lon
Daniel Pearl, the Achille Lauro, the USS Cole, the Iranian embassy, Munich, 9/11 (just off the top of my head) -- all products of Republican paranoia. The One has arrived, there's nothing to fear, just snuggle back down and drift off peacefully....

They are not listening
to the voices of reason of those who have lived responsible lives.
The only listen to smug reporters who get leg tingles.
The only hope for our country is that the harsh reality of communism's failure is learned before it it too late.

If it were up to me

When I watch ALL but 12 Republican Senators vote for the Harry Reid's Land Bill I wonder just how I can acheive a Representative that will assist in limited government principles that would return rights and responsabilities to commerce, charity and the individual.

If you have any ideas, I'd like to hear them.. for without limited government our culture will continue to decay and our freedoms will erode.

Forgotten words.....
"He that lives on HOPE...will die fasting."

Benjamin Franklin

"It does not take a majority to prevail,But rather a irate, tireless, minority, keen on setting brush fires of freedom in the minds of men."

Sam Adams

"It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from it's government"

Thomas Paine

"If it is to be, it is up to me"
There it is, a call to personal responsibility in ACTION! We must rely on the God who made us, not on ourselves alone, but rather on ourselves together with our Maker, following His commandments with His help. God has not put the Government in charge of us; that should be Good News to every thinking person. Let's get the wailing overwith and get ourselves going in the Right direction.

Hipocracy
I used to vote Republican. Now I can't tell a Republican from a Democrat! I'm left without a voice in the government.

42,000,000 citizens voted Republican and what did they get? Republicans that vote with Democrats!

I guess the Republican "Party" slogan now is, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." Or worse, "If you can't beat 'em, just sit down and keep your mouth shut, or just whisper and back off."

42,000,000 citizens unknowingly/unwillingly just became Democrats. Everyone says Republicans need to redefine themselves. They just did -- it's called "liberal."

What we can do now:
When we see evil, we must NAME IT, hold it up to the light and show it for what it is.

I think it was GK Chesterton who wrote that in a world of only varying shades of grey, when we have named the evil thing, all the colors come back into everything else.

Things are the same
in the dark as in the light. Truth speaks volumes. Talk to your neighbors and friends. Share your thoughts of the government control we soon face. They listen. Churches are one of the strongest influences still to this day, listen to their message and spread it to all who'll listen. Grassroots are us,people. People talking to people and on and on. That's how ideas are shared and values embedded to our young. Live by example and go back to our Roots.

Platitudes
Yeah, all this is true, but irrelevant. Like most articles of this type, it's long on "ideas" and short on implementation. Until Republicans can develop ways to work around old media and Hollywood and conservatism popular again, we're sunk.
I think we've reached the tipping point in this country where those that are receiving benefits from the government outnumber those that are paying for the government. There is no incentive for those on the dole to vote in a party that is going to kick them off the dole.

The weather reports STORMY SKYS

Hurricane PEBO is about to hit with sustained winds of 500 miles an hour....

FDR's first 100 days will look like a summer breeze!

The weather report will be:

WEATHER PEBO...
1.takes our guns
2.takes our kids born or unborn
3.releases terrorists into our midst since their countries don't want them back
4.spends us in to oblivion
5.grants amnesty to ILLEGALS

Well the WEATHER forecast is calling for all patriots to batten down the hatches to defend life limb and liberty

God Bless the USA ..we could use it!

Ideas are power
but straw men aren't.

1. The US does not face an existential threat in Islam, Russia or China. Paranoia will not, I repeat, NOT, lead one to making good judgements.

2. Most people think their own kids schools are just fine. Trying to scapegoat America's teachers is a losing proposition.

3. Away with economic make believe? Tell that to Dick "deficits don't matter" Cheney. Tell that to the party which took a substantial projected surplus and turned it into the largest deficit in History, expanded govenrment entitlements enormously, and tell it to the party that promised prosperity to America by borrowing it from our children.

4. Up with decency, as long as it's stuff that a few Christian fundamentalists think is good for us. How about "mind your own damn business" instead.

James #7
Amen! ditto Maggie..we need the church to forget about the IRS and start teaching the people what it means to be a Christian and that means preaching the GOSPEL, not some ear tickling touchy feely I'm good and you are good
pap so many are preaching today; and to stop with making the Gospel 'comfortable' for 'seekers' How about calling SIN sin and
demanding accountability from our so called leaders instead of being so afraid the IRS will take the tax exemption away. It's about time the Church relied on the MASTER instead of the tyrant. The pre Revolutionary pastors weren't afraid to preach the truth, and to teach the congregants civic responsibility which prepared
them for the Revolution. Nothing's changed much except the tax code, there's still a third who care, a third who don't and a third in the enemies box. The main thing we have to do
as believers is to follow 2 Chron. 7:14 and let God do the rest. And Jack, you are an infant,
you havent a clue except you don't want anyone to be the "boss of me," so you attack Christians,..take your gripe to God..He's the One who said it, not us we are just smart enough to obey His commandments.

Ideas and Power
Ideas create a platform, and some good ones are seen here. However, Republicans should take heed of Saul Alinsky ("Rules for Radicals"), whose ideas inspired Obama's campaign. Power comes from people and money.

Jack:
I agree with last part of your number 4: Mind your own .... business.

Unfortunately it is apparent that you and a number of other liberals believe it is your business to run mine. And as long as you aren't paying my way, I think I can handle my business without any problem at all.

John Andrews is right
Ideas are power. Republicans have no ideas and the fear/hate card didn't work this time around, therefore, they find themselves out of power.

It's a good credo.
