Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Following a surprising speech in which he uttered the words “Palestinian state” for the first time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strengthened his standing at home and abroad, far exceeding expectations from all quarters.

Though last week’s address received only modest coverage in the United States, it has already shifted the dynamics of the inevitable “peace talks.” Contrary to the media’s conventional wisdom, however, Israel’s stronger negotiating position actually increases the odds of genuine, measurable progress for the Palestinians in the near term.

Emphasizing that positive steps could be taken almost immediately, a high-ranking Knesset staffer used a football analogy to explain that the Obama administration now has important question to answer: “Do they want to go for a Hail Mary pass, or will they be happy moving the ball forward?”

No amount of bromides and wishful thinking can change the reality that a “permanent” agreement has never been within reach. Israel, of course, has long been willing to make painful concessions, and the broader public still supports some form of a two-state solution. What has been lacking, though, is a willing partner on the other side of the bargaining table.

Former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat famously walked away from a generous deal in July 2000 that offered him almost his every request. Shortly thereafter, he ushered in the so-called intifada, an unprecedented campaign of suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians in buses, markets and cafes.

Since then, matters have sadly deteriorated. Palestinians suffer not just a crisis of leadership, but also a crisis of culture. Thanks to the dogged efforts of groups such as Palestinian Media Watch and Middle East Media Research Institute, we know that Fatah in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza miss no opportunity in textbooks or television to poison the minds of parents and children alike.

It is little wonder that terrorism remains more popular with Palestinians than does peaceful coexistence with a Jewish state.

Much has been made—correctly—about Netanyahu’s insistence that any future Palestinian state be de-militarized and accept Israel as Jewish, but two other provisions in his speech likely will be the initial focal points as soon as talks start.

In calling on the Palestinians to “turn toward peace ... in educating their children for peace and in stopping incitement against Israel,” Netanyahu brought to the front-burner a subject largely ignored by the three prime ministers who served since his last term ended ten years ago. Here Western governments actually possess substantial leverage, as it is their taxpayers’ money that underwrites most Palestinian education and media.

Parallel to curbing indoctrination is Netanyahu’s idea of “economic peace,” which would entail fortifying the Palestinian economy and re-building the institutions of civil society. Advisors to the Israeli prime minister believe that conditions on the ground—culturally, politically, economically—must improve before the Palestinian society will be ready to embrace peace with Israel.

What is not likely to be a major sticking point in the near term is the issue that has generated the most attention in recent weeks: Israeli settlements. People close to Netanyahu believe that the highly publicized spat has been overblown, and any differences with the Obama administration will soon be resolved.

Most important was the impact the speech had on Netanyahu’s political standing inside Israel. Improbably, he garnered praise from the right and left; his approval skyrocketed 16 percent overnight.

His right-wing coalition was pleased that he didn’t cave to Obama on settlements or propose a Palestinian state that would be capable of attacking Israel.

Helping him most with shoring up support from the center and the left, though, was the shockingly coarse responses from across the Arab world to Netanyahu’s insistence that Israel be recognized as Jewish. Presumably speaking on behalf of moderate Fatah leader and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said flatly, “In a thousand years, no Palestinian leader will accept this.”

“If they won’t accept us as a Jewish state, then when will they ever accept us?” asked Shmuel, a 70-year-old native Israeli who supported Oslo and has mostly voted for left-wing candidates. Such was the sentiment across Israel, where ordinary citizens are leery of making concessions to people who won’t even agree to their country’s right to exist.

Speculation that “peace” is now dead or hopelessly delayed misses the point. Oslo proved that a signed deal alone does not bring peace.

On the table now is the prospect of making life better for Palestinians, laying the necessary foundation for a future state that is stable and—most important—committed to peace.

For the sake of all parties, Obama should not waste this historic opportunity.

Whether you believe this or not,
the Bible calls the Jews: God's chosen people. Jesus himself was a Jew. The Bible also says that those who bless Israel (His people) will be blessed, and those who curse His people will be cursed. Revelation says that the entire world will go to war with Israel and Israel will win. [You've heard of Armegeddon?]

Barack Hussein Obama is no match for the protection of God Himself over Israel. God is not impressed with Barry's silver tongue.

The true Obama:
From his book 'Dreams From My Father', "I will stand with the Muslims if the political winds blow in an ugly direction". Of course this was nevr addressed by the media during his campaign. But then again, very few of his past questionable associations or actions were.

Israelies 1 Arabs 0
There is no such thing as a Palestinian State no matter how much the Arabs demand it. The land belongs to the "Children of Israel" not the children of Ishmael. And cry, demand,or riot until doomsday will not change God's plan.
Folks don't have to believe it, but that doesn't change it. Folks, don't worry about Israel, God is on their side. And now you know the rest of the story.

Tribal warfare

Most middle east international problems are based on tribal warfare, 21st century version.

If two tribes want to get along with each other, they will. And if they do cooperate, they will both prosper.

If two tribes don't want to get along with each other, for reasons of insanity, or ego, or ignorance, then they won't. And both tribes will lose.

Think about how prosperous and successful the middle east would be if, rather than fighting with each other, all ME nation states were to compete internationally for excellence in education, development of the the best cars and the most powerful computers, cultivation of the most productive farms, and dare I suggest, performance of the most charitable acts for their fellow man.

Instead of being a part of the world the rest of us want to avoid, the middle east, with its warm climate and welcoming people, would be a place where we would all want to visit.

It really is a shame that so much of the middle east is stuck mentally in the seventh century.

I wish Israel much success, but it lives in a bad neighborhood, and it has to remain strong in order to survive.

The Right Move
Netanyahu played his cards perfectly on this one, essentially agreeing to the 'gentle nudges' from Obama while laying out absolutely reasonable conditions of his own.

Let it be the Palestinians who have to make the first move or make consessions.

If the Iranians overthrow the mullahs then all the money and weapons dries up for Hamas and Hezbollah, so right now everybody in the Middle East is watching what's happening there, making anything to do with the Palestinians irrelevant for the time being.

The Palestinians have made all the wrong moves in regards to furthering their cause and have made it easy for the Israelis to hold the moral high ground year after year.

The collapse of Iranian support will just be another log on that fire, and the fact that they indoctrinate their people from the time of birth to hate the Jews only garauntees their plight until they're willing to admit that they're wrong about Israel's RIGHT TO EXIST.

Until then...let them die by the thousands....that's what they've so heavily invested in, they deserve the fruits of their labors....let the martydom begin

Change happens when the pain of holding on is greater than the pain of letting go.

Look at a Map of the M.E.
Isreal occupies a tiny little spec in the arab world. Can't the pals find a homeland somewhere else? It's not about real estate. It's anti-semitism. You would think that our boy B.O. would stand against Racism

Obama is a sympathizer
with radical Islamists. His virtual silence on what is happening in Iran and his bullying of the tiny Jewish state are proof of this. Hopefully, he will not be reelected.

The Ah-Ha Moment?
“There are many leaders in the organized Jewish world who have privately discussed this issue with me, and say they are deeply concerned about Obama’s actions and policies toward Israel, and now they’re rethinking their support for Obama during the campaign and the election,” says Klein,[Morton Klein, President of the Zionist Organization of America] whose organization of 30,000 members is the oldest pro-Israel group in the country.

"Based on the president’s speech in Cairo on June 4 and many of his foreign policy appointments, Klein thinks Obama “may become the most hostile president to Israel ever.”

And, believe it or not, more than 60% of Jewish Americans voted for Obama!

Is this their "Ah Ha" moment?

He who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.....

ropati of 1:36
Well, that makes at least 2 of us. I am not impressed with Barry's silver tongue, either.

Mac NJ
How right you are!

He did say this and those who heard it were called racists!
He will also side with the Muslims over America.

Now that the 78% of American Jews have sealed America's fate they sre rethinking their position as a gun is held to Israel's head!

I am happy that Bibi was elected to office in Israel. May God give him strength and a sound
ability to reason. He is a smart man.

Two Minute Warning (2:00)
Answer: Surprise is no surprise at all since January 2009. President Obama will cast a ‘Hail Mary’ pass before most expect it and just after the 2-minute warning. He doesn’t play a ground game…its all pie in the ski stuff.

ugh
In 2000 Arafat turned down an offering which one hopes was not actually meant as a final deal, because the terms of it were such that no human beings would have accepted it. It would have left the Palestinians under effective Israeli control indefinitely.

One should not take this to far. It was a brave offer in that it offered a deal on Jerusalem, and it would have been nice to see a counter offer from Arafat.

But the idea that Arafat turned down a serious peace proposal is one of these fallacies that could not be stated with seriousness if debate on Israel was not so warped in this country. Barak deserves credit for what he did, but there is an odd drive to give him credit for something he did not do and would have reflected poorly on him if he did.

Also it should be noted that the second intifada was not unprecedented. That is why it is known as the second intifada. It was more deadly than the first because the Israelis had foolishly tricked themselves into thinking that it was they and not Arafat who kept the violence down during the Oslo years. So when Sharon declared he was taking responsibility for preventing violence away from Arafat that didn't work out so well.

Also, how stupid do you have to be to look at a people who have been under occupation for over 40 years and think, we need some other explanation as to why the people are so angry?

Lon

Very impressive post!

Except for the kosher issue...
... I'd say Mowbray's column is trying to put lipstick on a pig. Let's be honest -- Bibi blinked first. When you insist on trying to keep a country in the dumbest, most vulnerable spot in the world, you need to talk fast.

Obama
I agree with Lon that Obama is doing a fine job in dealing with Israel, but, it looks to me that he'll have absolutely no success furthering peace in that region or obtaining any justice for the people getting kicked out of their homes in the West Bank. We would have to shut off the money spigot and, that won't happen, before Israel would stop jerking us around.

Taft CA Jun 23, 2009 - 9:21 AM EST

Obama is doing a good job regarding Israel if you think a vote of 'present' is a valid vote.

Highlander
I'm hoping he is just laying some groundwork and maybe still trying to get a feel for a very complex and stubborn problem.

The Western Hemisphere
The Bible does not mention the entire Western Hemisphere - even in the 'final days'. Where is the Western Hemisphere at the time of the 'Battle of Armageddon'?

This Arab/Jewish conflict is just an inter- family conflict which will only be terminated at the end of time. All other attempts to solve the issue are just stop-gap measures. God is just showing mankind that only he can solve the problem.

Highlander raises some good points that apparently are unachievable. Why Israel and other countries financially support their sworn enemy is a mystery to me.

Joel Mowbray
Has anyone looked into this despicable man's background?

Mowbray is more pro-Israel than pro-U.S.

Israel-firsters in this country don't have a "dual loyalty" they have a single loyalty, Israel. They just happen to live in the U.S.

Taft CA Jun 23, 2009 - 9:36 AM EST

Only time will answer that question.

0bama will never be able to bully Bibi
He couldn't even bully his next-door neighbour Harper, who has a WEAK (non-majority; shown by Harper's request to Michelle Jean to prorogue Parliament) government--indeed he wound up apologising to Harper in February (within 30 days of inauguration) becoming first POTUS to go to Ottawa holding (figurative) almsbowl.

Barry can't bully Israel
Israel was created in 1948 as part of the same process which created Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and many other countries from the carcass of the Ottoman Empire which made the mistake of being on the wrong side in WWI. Israel is a country no more or less legitimate than any other country so created. Israel was attacked by her neighbors within hours, and most of them have refused to sign peace treaties. Israel accordingly has the same rights to win her war as we did in WWII. Carpet bombing and economic blockade come to mind. Instead, Israel foolishly chooses to court international approval by attempting to win by being reasonable and nice. This is exactly what came within hours of leading to extinction in 1973, costing Meier and Dayan their laurels and positions. It was the LBJ/Viet Nam method and it cost him his job, and 50,000 GI's their life. The biggest favor Hitler did for Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and France was Blitzkreig. All over in days, a continent captured with practically no one hurt. Guerilla resistance was ruthlessly crushed, and in Western Europe was generally ineffective. If not for the hope implied by Britain and the US, it could not have been sustained.
Israel should, and as wartime victor is entitled, to draw a border where ever it chooses, (just as it did in the Golan) and inform those on the other side they may call themselves a country if they like, or not, trade or not. But if they commit acts of war, they can be assured of renewed hostilities, including a new border and possibly a dead zone. International carrot and whip works.

Israel
Please look at Pistol's comments.

He stated that Israel can draw their borders over any area that chose.

This is just typical of the blind, insane support people in this country give Israel.

So Pistol, what other countries besides Israel can make their borders over any area they chose?

No RW
You obviously failed to notice that 0bama was rapidly blinking since February 2009--last-I-checked, that's well BEFORE Bibi became PM.

BUT...HE WILL...

Obama and Obamaism can only exist if the TRUTH remains unknown and uncertainty continues to prevail. Obama; his sole and heart are without substance or gratitude for what makes America so unique. Words alone will not suffice for making the “right” decisions. Obama will naturally blame the previous administration for his failures and although we now have a “One Party” representation in Washington, future decisions may not be the “right” decisions for America. These decisions, ultimately right or wrong, will not be immediately apparent; yet time and commonsense will eventually make them self evident.

This scares me and should scare every American that believes in “freedom”. Yet, as the recent election proves, most Americans have lost the commonsense necessary for making informed decisions and the toughness required for a strong, independent, prosperous, and free America.

When ALL is said and done…America will be the first casualty of the twenty-first century. As Obama goes…so goes America…so goes the rest of the world.

Misquoting the President
Believe me, I am no fan of President Obama. And his positions are bad enough without misconstruing the context of his quotes.

His book "Audacity of Hope" does indeed contain the quote "I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction". However, "them" refers to Muslim immigrants to America. The President was pledging to protect Muslim Americans from an overreaction to the tragic events of 9/11.

Pistol
I am not sure why it is supposed to matter, but the Ottoman Empire collapsed after World War I. Most of those other countries gained independence before World War II.

There is some truth to the claim that Israel could legitimately annex the West Bank and Gaza consistently with international law. And as much as the Palestinians might resent that they might benefit from becoming Israeli citizens. But of course that is not what the Israelis are doing or want to do. What they are doing, and seem to want to do, is to occupy the Palestinian territory to keep the people there in Limbo while building settlements that violate international norms with regard to occupation.

It is not clear what they expect to accomplish by this behavior which is rightly not consistent with international norms. The right to draw borders does not entail the right to ethnically cleanse the people living within those borders. Nor does it entail the right to dicatate the behavior of the people outside those borders.

Israel
Please re-read the headline.

Obama is trying to "bully" Israel.

No one bullies Israel. They do what they want to do and don't care what anyone thinks.

Israel just wants U.S. handouts and for us to stay out of their business.

Obama is trying to "bully" Israel.
Mowbray has that backwards. It is Israel and its fifth column here who try to bully American and largely succeed in getting the US to do things not in its interest and insuring its espionage and other crimes against the country go unpunished.

"Here Western governments actually possess substantial leverage, as it is their taxpayers’ money that underwrites most Palestinian education and media."

Yes, the US should make use of its leverage for a change against Israel buy cutting off the sugar tit in "aid" in view of the constant land thefts by the so-called "settlers". Squatters is more like it.

Screw Israel.

Does anyone know...
Has BHO offered to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem yet? I'm waiting for it....

Mowbray
"Israel, of course, has long been willing to make painful concessions, and the broader public still supports some form of a two-state solution."

Oh yea, finally, after the Palestinians started
returning gunfire instead of just throwing rocks. Very impressive.

Mowbray
My advice to the President. Stay out of the
fray - and keep our money out of it too.

The Isrelis...
...should tell Obama to stay out of Israel's business and to mind his own business. It's obvious to anyone with half a brain that Obama is anti-Israel and would be happy if the Arabs wiped Israel off the map. The so-called Palestinians, most of whom are actually Egyptians, do not deserve a homeland of their own. Besides, the original homeland of the true Palestinians (their historical and Biblical name was Philistines) was actually in Syria. So, if anyone should be giving land to the so-called Palestinians it should be the Syrians. But Syria, like all of the other Arab nations who claim to support them have made it clear in no uncertain terms that they are not welcome in their country. That's support for you. This idea of Israel giving up land to them is nothing more than a plan to destroy Israel. What Israel should do, in my opinion, is to drive all so-called Palestinians out of the West Bank and out of their land completely.

That "Security" Thing
History teaches us what has happened to every nation that found itself having to depend on other nations for their security: they were sold out, conquered, jerrymandered or enslaved.

Of all the nations existing today, Israel had better remember this lesson and its slogan "Never Again". They had better not be like stupid, lazy deluded Americans who believe they can outsource their freedom and security to Messiahs and government bureaucrats.

Bug Zapper's Working
All you need to do is write a column with 'Jews' or 'Israel' in the title and all the Jew haters show up in force.

I guess the Jews have big shoulders though and can handle all of you blaming every ill in the world on them.

Georgann from CO, your description of Nazis is much more befitting of you than Israelis. You would have made the Germans proud.

Yeah JD
What you are saying is perfectly apparent on this thread with the Jew haters. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.

These are the same drones who are always lecturing us about how moral they are.

I think their real problem is jealousy. They want the money we give to Israel to pay for their Free Government Cheese. How dare any money go to any purpose other than letting them sleep in longer in the morning.

Herman
Every country wants help without being told what to do once it gets that help. I am not sure why you consider that to be some unique failing of the Israelis.

The fact that the discussion in the US is warped towards the Israeli side does not mean that there is an advantage in making comments that are absurdly critical in the other direction.

The policies that Obama is pushing would benefit the Israelis in the long run (probably in the short run too). Otherwise they would be right to avoid any "bullying" on our part. There is no reason why any country should hurt its own interests just to please us.

Israel
To Lon

I have no problem with Israel acting in their own self-intereest. They would be crazy not to.

I resent two things about Israel (among others):

* The perception that somehow the interests of Israel and the interests of the U.S. are always the same.

* The perception that Israel is always right when in actuality they are just looking out strictly for themselves.

The U.S. can rent Israel's gratitude they can never buy it.

57 states
There are 57 muslim states - er - nations.
Many of them are theocracies, and more and more of them are hostile to both Christians and Jews.

There is 1 (one) Jewish state. One! It is Democratic (as opposed to Democrat, which is the party hostile to israel.)

U.S President Barrack Haman Soertoro wills Israel's demise, and the Palestinians cheer on yet another false hope.

Go Israel!

PV
"All you need to do is write a column with 'Jews' or 'Israel' in the title and all the Jew haters show up in force"

The other side of that coin is that a reader can always expect those who have their heads shoved up the Israelis' backside to also show in force and make excuses when not engaging in ad hominem attacks like the above. There is a big difference in not caring for Israel policy and deeds and hating Jews, but that would undermind your efforts to equate the two.

You people are the sort of folks who when spat upon, call it dew and that is what the Israelis have been doing for years, whether it be the attack on the Liberty, the Lavon incident, or trying to drag the US into another war.

Tough Jewish people
Barry O.does not have a bat big enough to play hardball against Israel. And in addition he is a minor leaguer,Israel is the big leagues when it comes to entanglements.

PV
Good post--I couldn't agree with you more. There seems to be a lot of anti-jewish centiment on this thread. A lot of foolish people in the world since the Jews are Jesus Christ's own flesh and blood and he says I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you.

ropati
I see that we posted almost the same thing. I promise I didn't copy you but good post.

Lon, Herman
Herman
You ask which countries can make their borders over any area they choose? Any country which wins a war. Germany's current borders are just what the winners let her have. Russia took the Kuriles from Japan. The Texans took Texas from Spain. We established a border with Canada in the 1700's. In the war of 1812, the border with Canada under went several changes in battle. My memory is that Canadians captured and occupied Detroit. The border was re-established by peace treaty. This is the way its done, always has been. North Korea atacked the South, was repulsed, the border restored by armistice. North Viet Nam attacked the South, prevailed, and annexed the South. If there is any morality involved, it would be over who initiates the use of force. Even this can be blurry.
Israel is no friend of the US. Our countries have common interests. Israel is in the position of being our enemies' enemy. She also has the best human intelligence network in the West. No doubt she supplies us with useful info and gets reimbursed one way or another. Both countries have twarted the other in situations where our interests did not coincide. Nothing else is to be expected.
Lon
You seem to make sense to me. If Israel were to draw border with what used to be Jordan's West Bank, she should naturally restrain herself to what could be defended. Genocide is a crime, but rarely punished. Israel has a decent record of treatment with her Arab population. And under extreme circumstances, with hate crime type murders quite common. If i were the Grand Poohbah with a magic pencil, i would draw a line quite close to the 1948 UN line, with concessions to defensibility, existing settlements, common sense, and with intent to do as little harm as possible. Israel turned over quite useful settlements in Gaza. Rather than put them to use, the Arabs razed them. The fence which establishes a de facto border in many places seems to slow down the flow of suicide bombers.

57 muslim nations
and one little democratic jewish nation. It's unbelievable that the arabs can't leave them alone and let them live in peace.

Obama's actions speak volumes as to who he stands with.

Netanyahu is a strong and capable leader and won't dance with Obama.

Ropati/Darlene
Amen..let the scoffers and haters rant all they want, the fact is that God while at time has chastized Israel for going astray, He's never abandoned them and if the people in this country know what's good for them, they'd be wise to stand with Israel.
If we think things are bad in this country now, just wait and see what happens if this government turns on Israel.
I am not worried about Israel either, God is their protector as He once was ours..we have
strayed, shaken our fist in His Face and will reap what we have sown, unless we repent as a people. What will it take to bring the American people to their knees in repentence???

PV I agree, but what do you expect from people who are so blind they can't see.
P

What's this about indigenous populations
From 1500 B.C to 68 A.D. the Jewish people lived in the area of contention known as Israel. That is, until they were routed by the Romans at that time. The religion known as Islam and its prophet didn't even exist until the 7th Century A.D. The land of the ousted Jews began to be called Palestinium by the Romans because they did not have a Latin equivalent for Philistia, the former land of the Philistines.

In the late 19th Century, the Arabs living in the land began selling back to the Jews the land which was once their, paying outrageous prices for land that either dessert of swamp. The Jewish people were able make the land into something that once again had value! The Arabs who had sold them land, originally, decided that they wanted it back. The war of 1948 would never have happened if it had not been started by Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. Israel was attacked, unprovoked by these neighboring nations. The Jews are not the oppressors and the, it is the "Palestinians" who continue to try to convince the world that they are the victims.

Your post is just sir!

Just the truth sir and nothing but the truth!

Being an American
I do not have the time to read all of the posts
again but I wish to address some of the comments
made here.

Some Americans are more loyal to Israel including the author.

I am an American and proud to be so. I have heard this liberal and anti Semetic rhetoric before.

Now I think of my dear America as I did when I was raising my children.
Because they were mine did not make them free
from error.

The thing that makes America great is the fact that liberty and Justice is, or should be for all people.
Justice is a much desired commodity especially today.

The fact that I am for Israel does not make me less of an American but only makes me just.

That America gives aide to Israel does not mean that it owns them.
We have given much aide to the Palestinian rebels and yet, no one has tried to stop their missles which bombard Israel on a daily basis.

So if being an American at the cost of being unjust, unfair, deaf blind and dumb to justice
then I stand condemned.

God Bless America and God Bless Israel.
May "Freedom Ring" here and in Israel.
