How Netanyahu Helps Obama, Peace

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

JERUSALEM—Speaking anonymously, senior Obama administration officials have been complaining about the prospect of working with a newly elected center-right government in Israel, led by Benjamin Netanyahu. The whispering campaign is getting louder in news reports in leading newspapers.

First of all, Democratic nations shouldn't tell other free societies whom they should elect. Barack Obama and his supporters might be blind to this because he was openly favored by most Western European leaders and media, but such meddling disrespects the democracies of other peoples.

The conventional wisdom, moreover, is wrong. The view that Netanyahu would make it harder for America to deal with Iran, forge a new Middle Eastern peace process or even work with Israel is simply reflexive bias masquerading as serious analysis.

Not only does Obama have better odds of a peace process that yields results with a Prime Minister Netanyahu, but he will also find much greater success in thwarting the Iranian nuclear threat.

Despite general agreement among most serious Westerners that Iran is close to achieving nuclear capability, preventing this threat has not been on the front burner. This was the case even before the global economic meltdown. With Netanyahu on the world stage, it would be impossible to ignore the issue. Even those who disagree with Netanyahu would be forced to respond to him, meaning the mullahs' nuclear program would finally receive the attention it deserves.

Rhetoric and posturing aside, Obama's early approach to Iran, as noted recently by former State Department official John Bolton, has largely continued along the path paved during Bush's second term. And over the last four years, Iran has moved ever closer to attaining nuclear weapons.

Soft diplomacy, in other words, has not worked.

The Obama administration has maintained the long-held American position toward Iran that no option—meaning a military strike—is off-the-table. This is supposed to be the stick to entice Iran to accept the carrot being offered as incentive to abandon its nuclear ambitions. But correctly or not, the mullahs, at least initially, do not seem afraid that Obama would take military action.

With a Prime Minister Netanyahu, however, Iran would almost certainly believe the prospect of military action is indeed real. To the extent it is even possible, Iran would only walk away from its pursuit if it believed it had no other option.

Should diplomacy fail, the Israeli leader most likely to strike Iran's nuclear facilities would be Netanyahu. Assuming he does—and does so successfully—he would prevent Obama from becoming the president who allowed a nuclear Iran.

While Netanyahu is the leader most likely to use military force against Iran, he is also the one best positioned to make meaningful gains in the direction of peace with the Palestinians. It would not be because of the oft-stated theory that it takes someone from the right to make peace, but rather because Netanyahu is the only figure offering new ideas.

"Netanyahu does believe in the peace process," says Ron Dermer, a senior adviser to the Netanyahu campaign. "What he has said is that the top-down approach has not worked, and he wants to try building Palestinian society from the bottom-up." This would entail finally addressing the indoctrination of Palestinian society in the media and in the textbooks, as well as helping the Palestinians create a better daily life through a stronger economy. And Netanyahu wants a peace process that engages the region by actively involving Jordan and Egypt.

In the decade and a half since the Oslo Accords, it would be hard to argue that the existing paradigm of land-for-peace has worked. If anything, there has been regression away from peace, and the Palestinians have suffered greatly over that time.

What most seem to remember about Netanyahu's first stint as prime minister is his political missteps and domestic political scandals. A dispassionate look at the record, though, shows Israel was hit with just three successful suicide bombing attacks in his three years as prime minister—versus four attacks in the three months before his 1996 election.

Just as important, Netanyahu achieved this security while opening Israeli society to economic cooperation with Palestinians. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were working in Israel or doing business with Israelis, and the Palestinian economy was prospering. Proving wrong the conventional wisdom, Israeli security and the Palestinian economy were simultaneously strong.

Freshly sworn in as president, Obama has made a number of rookie mistakes. He should not add to that list by criticizing the Israeli people for their democratic preferences.

Obama might even come to realize it is the best outcome for which he could have hoped.

somewhat off
It is not clear whether Netanyahu makes things better or worse because things are a mess there. But Mowbrey's arguments do not make a lot of sense.

He talks about the 15 year since Oslo as if there was a continual plan there. Actually there were the 7 years when Oslo was pursued and the Israelis thrived and the 8 years since Oslo was abandoned when Israel has generally not done as well.

He points to the 4 bombings before Netanyahu was elected, but leaves out that those bombs had as their goal getting Netanyahu elected. And Netanyahu responded by pursuing the policies that Hamas wanted. (Nor does Mowbrey mention that the attacks went even further down after Netanyahu left office. They were down to zero until Sharon's march on al Aqsa which successfully spared riots, and led to a much larger Israeli death toll than in the whole Oslo process.

And it is funny to describe a process by which we invade two countries surrounding Iran while refusing to talk directly with them as soft diplomacy. It is not too surprising that getting our army bogged down in two of Iran's neighbors led to Iran speeding up its weapons programs. But it is hard to see that as diplomacy, soft or otherwise. Whether Netanyahu will really try to blow up the situation in Iraq by flying over to bomb sites in Iran, is unclear. It would certainly be a disaster for the US if he did. But there is no reason to think he will take American interests into consideration. My guess is he won't do anything that stupid, but I may just be being optimistic.

Some good points, however
,Netanyahu have new ideas for the peace process ?

I find that troubling.

Ideas in the past have been solid, workable, and all have been rejected. It is not the ideas, it is the players.

In the Middle East reality what has changed ?

so you are worried about iran's looming
nuclear capacity. the fact is, it doesnt matter if iran gets nukes or not. britain and france already have them, and they will be radical muslim in a generation. it would be a better use of resources to purchase their nukes now while their government doesnt intend to use them, than to obamanate until they have a government that does intend to use them. on us.

Joel
Doesn't Netanyahoo favor the continual illegal invasion of the West Bank? This immoral policy will only be a burden to ME peace. Just imagine if Palestinians started to kick Jewish people out of their homes in Jerusalem!

curmie
Wouldn't the prospect of Pakistan and their nuclear arsenal and their released nuclear secrets spreader, be of a little more serious fear? I think the big reason right wingers like Neatnyahoo build up the Iranian bogeyman meme is to direct public attention away from very serious homeland problems.

Also, if Israel is so scared of Iran why do this?

"
Although secrecy is the first principle in the netherworld of arms trading, details of several subsequent major Israeli arms sales to Iran have come to light. In 1981, Ya'acov Nimrodi, an intimate of leaders across the Israeli political spectrum, sold the Iranian defense ministry $135,842,000 worth of Hawk anti-aircraft missiles, 155 mm. mortars, ammunition, and other weapons through his Tel Aviv-based company, International Desalination Equipment, Ltd. From 1955 to 1979 Nimrodi had been Israel's military attache in Tehran."

Remembering, that just the previous year, the Iranians had taken 66 American hostages and beat some of them.

Curm more on arms sales
Many at town hall will never forget 1983 in Lebanon.

"In the attack on the American barracks, the death toll was 241 American servicemen: 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and three Army soldiers. Sixty Americans were injured. In the attack on the French barracks, 58 paratroopers were killed and 15 injured, in the single worst military loss for France since the end of the Algerian War.[8"

Then, the next year!!!

"On July 24, 1984, Radio Luxembourg reported that Nimrodi had met in Zurich with the deputy defense minister and the top intelligence officer of Iran and with Rif'at al-Assad, the brother of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. Swiss government sources said that the meeting resulted in a deal to ship 40 truckloads of weapons a day from Israel to Iran, via Syria and Turkey."

Taft:
You sure seem to know a lot about Israel. What exactly is your agenda?

Hmmmm...
1. Obabba's first words upon signing our slavery deal yesterday, were,
"This is the beginning of the end".
2. He has lifted sanctions against Syria, the terror country.

Well...I could be wrong
And hopefully I am, but given the black separatist attitude of Obabba, his senatorial stint, and all his minions, and all that he has done to this country so far, I'd say this country is in deep doo-doo. And the doo-doo man is quite willing to shed his crap all over our country. And it's a very, very good thing that Netanyahu has the reigns in Israel because from all the evidence, Obabba hates Israel. And...those who curse Israel, will themselves be cursed. And since Obabba hung around the crazy church for over 20 years, it seems as though his, "God Damn America" will come true via Obabba!

Israel
As anyone else but me noticed that America's mainstream media is more pro-Israel than Israel's MSM?

Sage advice
"First of all, Democratic nations shouldn't tell other free societies whom they should elect."

Quite true and it needs to be extended to non-democratic nations as well. The US should start with the worst offenders when it comes to meddling in US affairs who are Israel(socialist democracy), Mexico (kleptocratic democracy) and China (totalitarian).

Vise versa, the US should stop its meddling as well.

"What exactly is your agenda?"

In my opinion I'd call it America First, something that hasn't been done in a number of years.

Nick
A number of us have and it is getting tiresome to see junior neocons like Mowbray constantly carrying water for them by trying to claim it is in the US's interest to get further embroiled in the mess over there when it is not.

One of the reasons we are having the economic mess we are is for our involvement. Allowing Netanyahu to bait us into doing something stupid will only make a bad situation worse.

Taft,

Good posts.

Israel
To Ryan

Can you name a pro-Palestinian columnist in this country?

To Taft

You have barely scratched the surface on the dealing of that despicable country, Israel. You didn't mention how Israel sold top secret U.S. military secrets to China. That is a country the U.S. really has to worry about in the 21th century.

How about Israel's attack on the U.S.S. Liberty causing 34 deaths and approx 165 wounded.

Anti Isreal Posts
I cant believe the number of anti Isreal Posts on this story, has everyone gone nuts, everybody on this primarily right wing site we should all be happy that Isreal has chosen a leader like we should have. Dont you all remember that all muslims are sworn to the total elimination of all jews and christians alike and will fight to the end to bring this about, anybody that dosent believe they mean it has their heads buried in the sand, the muslim religion should be banned world wide immediately, very soon all of Europe will be Islamic, we should support anybody who opposes the muslims where ever they are.

Roland
I have to agree with you about the insanity which I suspect comes from the Anti-Semitic, Huffington Post crowd that can normally be counted on to slander our country when they aren't busy venting their spleen at Israel. While I don't necessarily agree that Islam should be banned, yet, I believe that we need to support Israel because (until Iraq) it is the only democracy and our most steadfast ally in the Middle East. Besides, we may need Prime Minister Netanyahu to do the job that our president refuses to do in order to prevent the mullahs in Iran from getting the bomb.

Pro-American
Benjamin Netanyahu has a vison for Israel. It necessarily includes the survival and well-being of these United States.

Barack Obama has a vison for Barack Obama.

The Israeli is the pro-American player. I wish him well. He does well, so will I, so will my people and so will my country.

taffie
i do think that pakistani nukes are a problem. so are iranian nukes, and n. korean nukes. i was just pointing out that when you got lung cancer is no time to go on a low cholesterol diet. europe is out-looming the middle east as a threat to their own civilization, and we arent doing anything about it. why did we save europe from the nazis, then from the ussr, if we are just going to watch the islamic radicals take over without firing a shot? not that there is much we can do about it, other than offer then a good example by evicting our own islamic radicals and other illegal invaders. if you think i give a hoot about israel, you are wrong, but i dont think that pandering to islamics, even to the point of helping them annihilate israel will do any good at all in the real struggle, which is islam taking over the entire world. even being aware that it was jews who betrayed the west by handing over all the atomic secrets to the soviet union, i still cant see the jews as a threat even in the same ballpark as the islamics. you keep kissing their islamic donkeys, we will see if you live any longer than i do when they take over.

History
Israel has been under attack by Islamic terrorists for 50 years. Our media never tells all of the attacks but condemns Israel for defending herself. If you look at our history, when we backed Israel our economy grew, when we didnt our economy tanked. When Iran gets nukes they will not only attack Israel but every Christian nation IE the United States. There president and the Mullas have one agenda world domination, IE kill all Christians and non Muslims. You forget GOD is in charge, read revalation, God will not allow Israel to be destroyed. When it happens remember I told you so!!!! First the muslims and russia will attack Israel, God will stop there weapons in the air. Then china will attack. Blood will run knee deep. But Israel will survive. Obama has an agenda also, he wants to be dictator, he wants you as his slave. Just look at how and what Hitler did to take over germany. We are headed for destruction, if the people stand up and say no more before it is too late we can save our country from this but it will be a fight. This country can not survive as a socialist empire as has been proved by history. Only a republic controlled by the people will work. God Bless us all. Gene
