Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Editor's Note: Jerry Newberry, Communications Director for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, is currently embedded with the troops in Afghanistan.

We as a people need to know about the heroes who are fighting our wars. The honest-to-God heroes, not the phony, overpaid over-hyped and too oft-publicized types.

You know the kind I mean.

The heroes I’m talking about are ordinary people under most circumstances but end up doing extraordinary things because they are suddenly thrust into extraordinary circumstances.

War is one of those circumstances.

Doing appropriate justice to real heroes is a high mark to try and reach. How do you adequately convey their remarkable stories in a way that serves them - and the memory of their sacrifices - suitably well? After all, it’s not just the moment in time when the event, the act, actually occurred that is important, or even the deed itself. The essence of the story and the deed lies instead with the person behind the act.

So this is my attempt at telling you the story of an American hero.

Corporal Angelo J. Vaccaro had finally found his place in life in the Army, and as a senior line medic, with the 1-32 infantry, 10th Mountain Division.

It wasn’t always like that for Angelo. Born in the Bronx, and as that borough sometimes requires, he became a tough and street-savvy kid. He didn't live his entire life in the "B", however. The Vaccaro family - Mom, Dad and 5 siblings - eventually moved south to Miami.

The streets of Miami suited Angelo just as well, and predictably, he fell in with the wrong crowd, doing some things he later "wasn’t very proud of." Whatever sins he perceived himself to have committed weighed heavily on his mind. Unlike some of the punks he ran with, the kid from the Bronx-Nuvo Miami had a conscience after all - the values instilled and the lessons learned primarily by the grace and wisdom of his mother weren’t forgotten: “Always do the right things in life.”

Angelo was tired of his life going nowhere. Working at Wal-Mart as a stock-boy wasn’t cutting it. He yearned for something better.

So he made a decision. He enlisted in the United States Army "to turn his life around... to save himself." He opted for training in the medical field. After basic training and AIT at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, he was assigned to 1-32 Infantry, 10th Mountain Division, as Attack Company’s 3rd platoon line medic.

His imposing physique and outgoing and somewhat brash personality made him hugely popular with his fellow soldiers. But what really endeared him to the troops was the fact that Vaccaro did what combat medics have always done - he unfailingly put the needs of his fellow soldiers first, before his own.

Angelo Vaccaro had found a home.

Corporal Vaccaro eagerly sought to learn everything he could about the job as a medic. He easily assimilated knowledge from his counterparts, higher-ups and various Army schools. He was determined to be the best combat medic in the battalion, and his mantra was "if you can do it better, then show me how!"

The Army had transformed him. He had grown as a person and into a man and now he was focusing on the future. His short-term goal was to attend 91WM6 (nursing) school and eventually, as a long-term goal, to attend the Army Physician School.

No one who knew Angelo ever doubted he would accomplish the goals he had set for himself. In the words of a close friend, “Angelo was a born leader, he was the unofficial leader of the platoon of medics. He would take charge of a situation, no matter how bad it sucked.”

After deployment to Afghanistan, Cpl. Vaccaro participated in a nunber of operations throughout the Peche River Valley, Watarprpur Valley and Korengal Valley. He conducted more than 40 mounted patrols and well over 100 dismounted patrols.

In June, Vaccaro's platoon came under heavy enemy fire. The platoon suffered five casualties, Vaccaro being one of them. Undaunted by his own injury and still under heavy fire, Vaccaro ran to asist the most seriously injured soldier, covering his comrade with his own body while returning suppresive fire towards the enemy. Still under fire, Vaccaro dragged the wounded soldier to a safe area and began treating his wounds. He then moved on to treat the rest of the casualties.

There's more.

On a different operation, Vaccaro evacuated three wounded soldiers from a 7500 ft ridgeline by carrying them one-by-one over his shoulder out of the line of fire. He then treated and stabilized them while the firefight continued.

And finally...

The other night, Doc Vaccaro was serving as the senior line medic at the Koregal Outpost TOC. The radio came alive with news that his platoon, HIS soldiers, were involved in a heavy firefight with the enemy and had suffered two casualties. He immediately volunteered to leave the outpost and help conduct an extremely dangerous ground extraction. Despite clear and immediate intelligence that a ground evacuation would be attacked, Cpl. Vaccaro knew that medical intervention was needed at the site of the fight. As he arrived at the scene of the engagement and was attempting to evacuate the casualties, Cpl. Vaccaro was struck by enemy fire and instantly killed.

Angelo J. Vaccaro is more than a statistic. He was a young man who raved about his mother’s cooking, loved his family, loved his job and loved the soldiers he served with. When asked where he was from, he would respond in his heavy Bronx accent, "Miami", an answer that generated hoots of derisive laughter from his comrades.

He was a perfectionist, a teacher and friend. He pushed himself and others around him to the limit. Angelo loved cheesy 80’s music and would “jump like a little girl during scary movies,” but never flinch or falter when needed on the battlefield.

Angelo had hopes and dreams and an entire lifetime ahead of him. He epitomized the long line of combat medics who came before him and the long line of medics who will continue to serve as long as we call on our soldiers to fight our wars. He is representative of all of the soldiers of the 1-32 Infantry, as well as the thousands of other servicemebers who are serving today.

Corporal Angelo J. Vaccaro won’t be forgotten by those whose lives he touched on a daily basis. He won’t be forgotten by his family and friends or by the comrades he tended and mended to or by those whose lives were saved because of his actions.

This is the story of Angelo J. Vaccaro. A real American hero.

Words are Insufficient
May God bless your soul, Viccarro, for all of eternity to know the depths of His joy and love forever. May God, in His Providence, let me drink with you at His table before long.

We've lost something great, something incredible here.

I want to meet him one day.

crying

This is an Evil Thing
That the cowards should endure and the hero perishes.

We Must Not Fail
We must honor what this man DIED for. We voters, sitting in safety and whining about the imperfections of the flawed people that must inevitably rule over us, need to get even a thousandth of the patriotism and honor and love for his country that this man had.

We must use the full extent of our feeble power to stay the course in Iraq. We must prevail. We cannot, if we have hearts beating within us in part because of the sacrifices of these heroes in Iraq, fail to support the war.

I call on everyone to honor the deaths of these men by voting in November to win the war in Iraq. Making the deaths of these men and women meaningful is the only issue now.

Do not sit at home in November while this family and thousands of others mourn and bury their sons and daughters. Vote Republican in November if you have honor.

Heroes
"Loved cheesy 80's music," My kind of guy. My CD player is drumming out "Footloose" as I write this, and every toe tap is for him.

No matter what you think of the policies that put them in harm's way, there's no doubt that those guys (and some gals) are meeting the challenge, and they set an example that we should strive to live up to in our lives. Thank you, Jerry Newberry, for bringing us the grunt's eye view.

Tears and Joy
We are a blessed nation to have such heros in our midst. We never know who they are or when they might become known to us for they are all around us..we are a TRULY BELSSED NATION.
Keep his, and the memory of all those who died for our freedon, ALIVE!! BY VOTING REPUBLICAN this November and in '08. We need true leadership so that the memory of this man and those who went before him do not ever become forgotten. DOes anyone want to see the Clintons in power again??...so that they may slander good brave men of this kind? PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE....REPUBLICAN ALWAYS!

and MacZed....
Son, you have alreday shown what kind of person you are....a mothers prayers are with you in whatever your decision is....but I think you will make a FINE Marine.

Well said, Mr Newberry

I appreciate the article,
having a son who was formerly 10th Mountain medic and now 1st Cav medic,

The troops do love a good "doc".

Family produces Heroes
The family and family nuturing is what produces honest-to-God heroes. For in the family unit of a mother and father, siblings and the like. Values, Principals, Self-discipline, respect and love flourish and make one's moral and phyical character. When children grow in love and respect and learn to consider others, that is the true heart of the hero. This form of growth is being extinusihed today by the constant me, me, me, greedy and hateful training that our familys and our schools are nuturing to our youths today. The culture of death and hate and greed. How does the true nature of a human heart survive this contant fight????? that cause the soul to abandon faith, truth, struggles and the true love for himself and his fellow brother and sister? The human heart is being stabbed and crusifed to the point of death. Thank God in heaven for real people of faith, of Almighty God and his Grace and Healing. For this is what the human heart strives for and despartley needs to imbrace. Family Love and family lessons and faith of the Power of God are the geniune gifts the soul needs to Love, Live Life and Grow. Amen!!!! Praise Jesus!!!!!!!

Corporal Vaccaro
Mr. Newberry,

Thank you for letting us know about the heroic actions of one of our finest. Certainly we mourn Corporal Vaccaro and well with pride knowing that we have men of his caliber.

I understand that we are not awarding medals as generously as we should be. Hopefully that is corrected ASAP, because it is difficult to envision anyone more deserving than Angelo.

God rest his soul.

Adoptaplatoon
Again, another great piece from Mr. Newberry and a reminder to anyone interested in supporting overseas troops. http://www.adoptaplatoon.org is always looking for more citizens that want to do something for those that are fighting in our name. This organization, which you must first sign up for, supplies much needed items to our troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and other overseas missons. As winter approaches our troops are in need of many additional items to assist with their comfort. Books, CD's, snacks, shampoo, lotions, socks, underwear, gloves...the list goes on and on. In addition, AdoptaPlatoon has several operations going that help to connect the soldiers with the people in these regions and need items for children such as school supplies and of course candy. If anyone is interested just go to the website, sign-up and wait for a reply to tellyou how to help. Letters and cards are the most appreciated items of all and as the holidays approach, letters will be especially meaningful.
Vote Republican but even if you don't think about supporting these folks as they face another year away from home.

Vickiz
Well, I probably wouldn't vote Republican in this election if my life depended on it, but thank you so much for the link. I signed up to adopt two soldiers a few minutes ago.

Frey
Perfect. And I don't care if you vote Republican or not. The beauty of our country is in having that choice to make, who to vote for or not vote for...along with all the other choices like adopting a soldier or two. The one request that AdoptaPlatoon and other organizations have in reqards to contacting our soldiers is to refrain from politicizing for either party. No one overseas wants to hear a bunch of negative blathering while they are ducking and dodging incoming. But I am sure that you know that and will share stories of your family and your life with your soldiers. I have had some great letters and emails from soldiers and will value their thoughts about life and respect the job that they are choosing to do.
Thanks for joining.

angelo j. vaccaro was my uncle!!

jimmy

Cpl. Angelo J. Vaccaro
Hey Jimmy,
My name is ELizabeth my son was Cpl. Fernando D. Robinson who served with your uncle and died on the same day, your uncle tried to save my sons life when he got shot, i understand he never gave up, I want to thank you and his family for such a great and courages man, remember no mater what anyone says or writes we new them and who they really were Great men and Great soldiers. be proud and be strong, most of all make him proud! God less you all.

Remembering to be tactful
First, thank you Jerry for the wonderful memorial article to honor Vaccaro. You have really giving this unit a voice, and as a wife of one it's soliders it is greatly appreciated. My prayers go to his family. He was a great man. He will not be forgotten, of that I'm sure.
On another note, to a few commenters, please remember to be tactful. Although this website is based on political discussion, there are plenty of forums for your opinion. Please don't bring them to an area that is meant to remember a fallen man. He had friends of Republican, Democrat, Independant... and none of us would be so bold to use his death that way. Would you stand at a funeral and say those things? No, a funeral is to remember, thank and cherish the deceased. I'm not telling anyone to keep hush on political opinion, I'm just asking you post it elsewhere. Leave this space for remembering a solider, not using it as a ploy to get your canidate into office. There are plenty of other articles for that. They don't hold debates in Arlington. Don't start one here. When you live this life and know the men personally, sometimes it isn't about the White House. Sometimes it's about grief. Let us grieve here and discuss elsewhere.
