When anti-Semitism is

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Two anti-Semitic incidents occurred on July 28. Both took place on the West Coast; both involved an American venting his hostility to Jews. But only one of them became in the days that followed a big national story about anti-Semitism. The other was treated as a serious but local matter, and drew only modest coverage around the country.

Incident A involved nothing more dangerous than a guy spewing crude anti-Semitic slurs when he was arrested for drunk driving; once sober, he publicly and profusely apologized. Incident B involved a Muslim gunman’s premeditated assault on a prominent Jewish institution; his attack left one woman dead and sent five to the hospital, three of them in critical condition.

Which would you say was the bigger story?

Unless you've spent the past week submersed in the Mariana Trench, you know that the intoxicated driver in Incident A was Hollywood’s Mel Gibson, who railed at the Los Angeles County police officer who pulled him over about the “(bleeping) Jews” and how “the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” Details of Gibson's tirade leaked quickly and the story was soon everywhere. In the first six days after his arrest, the media database Nexis logged 888 stories mentioning “Mel Gibson” and “Jews.” And that didn’t include the countless websites, talk shows, and smaller publications where the story also played.

By any rational calculus, Incident B was far more significant.

According to police and eyewitness reports, the killer, a 30-year-old named Naveed Haq, forced his way into the offices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle by holding a gun to the head of a 13-year-old girl. Once inside, Haq announced, “I am a Muslim American, angry at Israel,” and opened fire with two semi-automatic pistols. Pam Waechter, 58, died on the spot. Five other women, one of them 20 weeks pregnant, were shot in the abdomen, knee, or arm. When one of the wounded women managed to call 911, Haq took the phone and told the dispatcher: “These are Jews and I’m tired of getting pushed around and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East.”

This was no spur-of-the-moment meltdown. The police say Haq, who holds an engineering degree from Washington State University, had purchased the two guns and waited 10 days before picking them up on July 27. He selected his target by searching online for Jewish sites. And as his declarations make clear, he was impelled to kill by his antipathy toward Jews and his convictions as a Muslim.

At a time when jihadist murder is a global threat, and when some of the most malevolent figures in the Islamic world -- Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hezbollah chieftain Hassan Nasrallah, to name just two -- openly incite violence against Americans and Jews, the attack in Seattle should have been a huge story everywhere. Yet after six days, a Nexis search turned up only 236 stories mentioning Haq -- about one-fourth the number devoted to Gibson’s drunken outburst. Why the disparity?

No doubt part of the answer is that Gibson is a celebrity, and that "The Passion," his 2004 movie about the crucifixion of Jesus, was criticized by many as a revival of the infamous anti-Semitic motif of Jews and Christ-killers. Gibson, who belongs to a sternly traditionalist Catholic sect, was already suspected of harboring ill will toward Jews. His crude remarks on July 28 confirmed it, and pushed the subject back into the spotlight.

Fair enough. But if previous behavior and religious beliefs explain the burst of interest in the Gibson story, they only deepen the question of why the Seattle bloodshed was played down. After all, Naveed Haq is not the first example of what Daniel Pipes has dubbed "Sudden Jihad Syndrome," in which a seemingly non-violent Muslim erupts in a murderous rampage.

Just this year, for example, Mohammed Taheri-azar, a philosophy and psychology major at the University of North Carolina, deliberately rammed a car into a crowd of students, saying he wanted to "avenge the death of Muslims around the world." Michael Julius Ford opened fire in a Denver warehouse, killing one person and injuring five. "I don't know what happened to him yesterday," his sister Khali told the Denver Post. "He told me that Allah was going to make a choice and it was going to be good and told me people at his job was making fun of his religion."

Other cases in recent years include Hasan Akbar, a sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division, who attacked his fellow soldiers at an American command center in Kuwait with grenades and rifle fire, killing one and wounding 15; Hesham Ali Hadayet, who killed two people when he shot up the El Al ticket counter at the Los Angeles airport in 2002; and Ali Hasan Abu Kamal, who was carrying a note denouncing "Zionists" and others who "must be annihilated & exterminated" when he opened fire on the observation deck of the Empire State Building.

If the Catholic Mel Gibson's nonviolent bigotry is a legitimate subject of media scrutiny, all the more so is the animus that has spurred Muslims like Naveed Haq to jihadist murder. And yet that is a line of inquiry that few seem willing to pursue. "No one wants to propagate bias or jump to conclusions," the New York Sun noted the other day. But how many more Haqs must erupt in a homicidal rage, it asked, before we stop assuming that these are merely random incidents and open our eyes "to the possibility that they are part of a war in which understanding the enemy is a prerequisite for victory?"

rising anti-Semitism
the analysis immediately above is right on the money. Additionally, Gibson is a known quantity and a star. The victim in Seattle is unknown to anyone, much less by the gentile community. From another perspective, the death of this woman will cause nothing because no one cares at a distance. On the other hand, Gibson's influence exhumes the public outcry over "The Passion" and gives it palpable form and substance.

A far more poignant question is this: Are these global outbreaks simply random and spontaneous outbreaks, or could they be the highly skilled behind-the-scenes manipulation by global powers whose modus operandi and modus vivendi is the business of and the cost of--and the means of--war.

Hmmm....now, who might that be?

Mel Gibson
Many of us grew up in intolerant neighborhoods, where prejudiced comments about blacks, jews and latinos were common and were part of the crucible in which we were formed. As we grow, some of us rise above these prejudices, but even if we rise above these wrongminded views, they never leave us completely. Was Mel an example of this? His father is infamous as a Holocaust denier, whether true or not. Did the senior Mr. Gibson inadvertently raise his children with a prejudiced against Jews that Mel has since effectively overcome? This plausible scenario goes a long way in explaining Mel's own momentary relapse into bigotry, triggered by a relapse into alcohol abuse. Critics are claiming that alcohol is a truth serum. I think rather that it temporarily revives old memories and responses, not unlike having a dream where you are still a child. I also think that many physically mature adults these days are not intellectually mature and this simple explanation is beyond them.

the truth about the Jews
If you listen to the newscasts around the world, you will hear words like "terrorism" used to describe Israelis for their tactics in Lebanon. However, it was Jews who voted for terrorists organizations. It was Muslims in Palestine (Hamas), Lebanon (Hezbollah), Egypt (Muslim Brotherhood) and Iraq (al-Sadr).

Since 9-11, the Jews also didn't murder women and children in France, Holland, Spain, England, America, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, or Saudi Arabia.

Muslims did.

Yet so many journalists and news commentators (not to mention Muslims themselves) condemn Israeli "aggression."

There is one group that wants to kill and enslave the world. It's not the Jews.

Interesting
"Haq, who holds an engineering degree from Washington State University ..."

"Mohammed Taheri-azar, a philosophy and psychology major at the University of North Carolina ..."

And from Daniel Pipes:
Ali Warrayat, "the Arizona State University student from Jordan ..."

Mujtaba Jabbar "graduated from Mount Hebron High School in Ellicott City and was a 2005 graduate of Loyola College in Baltimore, where he majored in biology ..."

A college education didn't do much for these guys. One wonders how many of these nutjobs are currently in our universities.

Mel Gibson
Mr. Gibson's incident isn't a matter of Anti-Semitism, but alcoholism.

Mr. Gibson's father was reportedly very Anti-Semtic. It that is true, umdoubtedly Mr. Gibson has hours of his father's Anti-Semetic venom stored in his childhood memory. The disease of alcoholism simply unlocked that old door.

Of course Mr. Gibson does owe an amends, part of which he completed in his profuse apology to the Jewish community. The more important amends, however, is to his family and himself and can only be made when Mr. Gibson decides to go for sobriety.

I am a great fan of Mr. Gibson, and he made a real contribution to my life with The Passion of the Christ.

A lot of us are pulling for you, Mel. One day at a time, you can do it.

God Bless You.

David

Religious hatred and personal hatred
Here's my take. First, Mel's a celebrity, and it's clear that Americans have an unlimited appetite for "news" --good, bad, or whatever, about celebrities. Second, and more important, whatever the truth is about Mel's bias, it is something "personal." If he is anti-Semitic then it's "his bad," as kids say.

As for Haq, clearly what many Americans don't want to consider is that his hatred of Jews stems from his understanding of the teachings of Islam. It is very difficult for most Americans to grasp that hatred can be an element in a major religion. Most Americans, I think, take for granted that if something is a "religion," then it is about peace and love. So Haq must be a whack job--that makes more sense to many people than the thought that his religious beliefs themselves were responsible.

Now, what about his "insanity?" Here's a general point about this kind of argument. Suppose that Haq does indeed suffer from some identifiable mental disorder. The fact remains that he chose particular persons to harm who were Jewish and justified his actions by reference to this. Whatever his mental condition, he acted as an anti-Semite; he did not just start shooting at random at people on the street.

I should say a SINCERE conversion--I am aware that he was baptised in a Christian faith very recently.

Of course Naveed Haq's actions were worse than Mel's. However, why is it that a comparison is even made?

Mr. Jacoby and so many others judge Mel by drunken words when he is agitated due to being arrested. Perhaps Mr. Jacoby really has never thought an illogical thought at such annoying times (such as when getting pulled over for speeding and thinking uncomplementary thoughts toward the officer as I have without any alcohol).

Is a tirade when drunk and agitated so illogical, that you choose your limited knowledge regarding Mel over those that actually know Mel and those that actually know something about alcoholism and alcohol's effect on the alcoholic.

So, while I agree that Naveed should have been a bigger story than Mel. I thoroughly disagree with your conclusion that Mel's crude remarks confirm that he is anti-semitic.

Naveed Haq (Nick) did not just recently convert to Christianity. I knew Nick fairly well until he took off for Seattle. He was all over the place with his beliefs. He was a social misfit, had recently got fired from here, and apparently that may have triggered him to fall back on at least a show of Islamic fundamentalism. He is plenty smart enough, though to know that his actions were unconscionable. I personally think he did to get some "street cred", if you will, with fellow islamicists and be a "player" on the owrld stage. I personally can't believe this is getting so ignored--even out here in Washington.

The gunman in Incident B had recently converted to Christianity. Get your facts straight.

Even more scrutiny ...
... should be directed at the media which choses the anti-Catholic framework and is by willing silence taking a fundamentally anti-Israel/anti-Jewish position.

Is that too far-fetched?

Let's compare
Mel Gibson, under the influence of alcohol, gets pulled over by the police, erupts into racist language, and the media "goes wild" (as usual). Mel's movie "The Passion" is held up as his anti-semitic proof. This movie depicted, as written in the Bible, that the animosity and jealousy of the chief priests, the scribes and the elders brought about the crucifixion, not the general populace of "the Jews". The crowd that called for the death of Jesus had been stirred up by the chief priests. It was not all Jews.

Many comments since then say that Mel's career is over.

A friend just reminded me that we should now look at Ted Kennedy, the liberal who left a girl to die in a submerged car in a river, the accident his fault as he was under the influence of alcohol. Sure, the media railed on about this but this murderer got off scott free, has continued to represent this nation as a Senator, continuing to be an immoral liberal.

Kennedy's career, unfortunately is not over, yet!

Which is the greater "crime"??? Running of one's mouth or causing the death of another? Which career should be ended?

Now let's look at the Islamic Fundamentalists. They have slaughtered across this country and around the world. Many are Palestinians who claim they want their country back. There never was a "country" of Palestine until the British so named it. Yet, the Palestinians claim Israel as their country and vow to eliminate all Jews to get back what the British gave them....and who gave the British the right to give away Israel and re-name it?

Why didn't the media give the same importance to the mass murder by a Muslim on the same day that Mel Gibson unfortunately spewed epithets? Could it be that the media itself is skewed? The media is comparing apples and oranges, as usual, wanting only what will most arouse the populace, misbehaviour by a celebrity.

I for one, think Mel misbehaved badly, but at least he has apologized and will not repeat such behavior. This Muslim on the other hand outright murdered and should receive the maximum penalty, and we know that he and his ilk will continue to slaughter in the name of Islam, as they have been encouraged to do so by their "chief priests", who have managed to skew the teachings of Mohammed.

Here in the midwest, I didn't even hear of the murder incident (above). However, the actions of Mel Gibson have been on the news every day.

God must be weeping.

"He's Mentally Ill..."
The first thing the Muslim community did in the case of Haq was bring out evidence of his mental unfitness and therefore his blamelessness for a premeditated murder spree. This is the American Way -- criminal lawyers of my acquaintance back in the 1980s used to mark their briefs "TMD" (Traumatized by Mommy's Divorce") for the white kids and PVS ("Poor Victim of Society") for the Black kids -- of scrutinizing each event as evidence of Mental Illness or some Syndrome or other that requires therapy, not punishment.

Cue the Brave New World and its prescription of "one cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments." Just take a gram and "I only Am." Medication is the cure. Betty Ford once commented that the average family doctor believes every problem a woman has is at heart a Valium Deficiency.

Mel Gibson's problem is that he needs Rehabilitation. So is Haq's problem.

Just understand them and drug them, and everything will be okay.....

Seattle
I'm with you, Red, White & Blue.
And there are 4 other family members with us both.
Let's make sure we vote.

Hypocrisy..
The hate for Christianity is far greater than the dislike for Islam - yet it is Islam (not Christianity) that directs its followers to destroy all non-believers.

If...
Gibson had railed against Christians you wouldn't have heard anything more in the news except that he had been arrested for drunk driving.
Red White and Blue is correct when he says that the liberal media feels the need to "protect" minorities.

A culture that glorifies Violence
It is not surprising then that there are so many violent individuals who come from an Islamic background when Islam itself values so highly military might, conquest by the sword, physical domination.

Famous White Catholic Male
The Mel Gibson story got a lot more play because of his celebrity status, to be sure. But it was also irresistable to the media because Gibson is white and Catholic, and thus fits the liberal idea of the typical racist. The Muslim murderer in Seattle is in one of the liberal "victim" categories. Good liberals do not criticize members in the "victim" categories, nor do they make much of an effort to publicize racist, hate-based crimes committed by people belonging to "victim groups". It might upset their categorical world of "Non-White good, White bad". I think the media actually believes that widely publicizing the Seattle story would cause mobs of racist whites to kill every Muslim they see on the street. As another example of this, consider how the DC sniper case was reported. Most MSM used the birth name "John Williams" to refer to the sniper rather than his chosen name "John Muhammed," and most did not identify him as a Muslim. Their paternalistic "protection" of minorities helps liberals feel less guilty for being white and privileged.
