Black leaders slow to warm up to Obama

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Barack Hussein Obama may be the media’s anointed “chosen one” in the 2008 race for the presidency (for now, at least). However, the “Leaders of Black America” appear to be tightly guarding their own lamp oil, and to be watching Obama with more than a bit of apprehension.

As he London Times recently reported, “Civil rights leaders who have dominated black politics for much of the past two decades have pointedly failed to embrace the 45-year-old Illinois senator who is considering a bid to become America’s first black president.”

The story quotes the Rev. Jesse Jackson as saying, “Our focus right now is not on who's running, because there are a number of allies running.”

Former Calypso singer Harry Belafonte, recently in the news for attacking President Bush and providing ringing endorsements of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, chimed in with the warning that America needs “to be careful about Obama,” because “we don’t know what he’s truly about.”

Other than lamenting the “media razzle-dazzle” and lack of “meat” regarding Obama’s views on important issues, the Rev. Al Sharpton has declined comment on Obama, citing a possible presidential run of his own (again).

The reason for the chilly reception? One self-proclaimed “independent” Democrat strategist ventured this guess: “They are basically jealous. They’ve been toiling in the trenches for decades, and along comes this son of a Kenyan farmer and suddenly he’s measuring the drapes in the Oval Office.”

Obama’s ability to garner media attention – and positive media attention at that – without having to appear at the side of Cindy Sheehan or Hugo Chavez, without having to publicly support the schizophrenic Duke rape case accuser in Durham, NC, without having to defend criminals by means of often-hollow claims of racism or police brutality, and without having to go to any other extreme lengths has doubtless grated on these men, none of whom shy from the spotlight.

While Obama has managed to maintain the appearance of being a centrist Democrat due in large part to his ability, for all intents and purposes, to “cherry-pick” those issues on which he will go on record with his opinion, a presidential campaign would seriously hinder that – especially, as one Democratic analyst was reported as saying, if there were a Sharpton candidacy to contend with in the primaries, since it would “put Obama on the spot by forcing him to address awkward civil rights issues such as police brutality and racial profiling that he tends to steer clear of.”

Some have called a primary contest with Sharpton “just what the doctor ordered to keep Obama on the straight and narrow”; others, though, have suggested that his candidacy would work to the advantage of Hillary Clinton, as it could split the black vote in the primary.

In a recent interview, the flamboyant civil rights leader warned that Obama could not “take the black vote for granted.” However, as a Democratic strategist pointed out in response, Obama could benefit from the comparison to Sharpton, emerging as a “model of reason.”

Each of these arguments, of course, has the potential to be correct.

Given the past records of Sharpton, Jackson, Belafonte, and others, the idea that Obama is, at least partially, begrudged the glowing media attention being lavished upon him is certainly not out of the question. However, one has to wonder whether the reason behind the apprehension may have more to do with a desire to withhold approval until Obama’s public persona moves farther to the left, and more in line with the black liberal Democrat standard (or at least the private assurance that he will do so once he has won over the American electorate with his moderate facade).

A serious worry for those who anoint the leaders of the African-American movement, of course, is that Obama may stray from those beliefs and policies – an act which would likely earn him the enmity of America’s black leadership, and result in his being branded with the dread misnomer “Uncle Tom” (which has been described by “Black Agenda Report” magazine as being a “Black individual or group” who has “betrayed… the best interests of Black folk”), or the even more hateful epithet of “Oreo.”

Unfortunately, a precedent has been set regarding the meting-out of this penalty on those who have questioned the norms of African-American political thought. Maryland Lt. Governor and 2006 Senate candidate Michael Steele had Oreo cookies thrown at him while on the campaign trail.

Former National Security Adviser, and current Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice was referred to as an “Aunt Jemima” and a “white man’s lackey” by a liberal Wisconsin radio host (on “Progressive Talk 1690AM”), and was branded a “House Slave” by the African-American magazine Suede.

Harry Belafonte also called Colin Powell a “house slave” and a “race sellout” due to his support for some of the President’s policies, and DailyKos, the crown prince of liberal web sites – and one which often receives guest postings from Democratic members of Congress – referred to the former Secretary of State in 2004 as an “Uncle Tom” who was “stumping for Massa Bush” for his activity on the presidential campaign trail.

DailyKos also referred to Ohio gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell and his supporters as “Uncle Tom's Cabin Republicans,” solely because of their party affiliation, and a writer at liberal weblog Democratic Underground referred to him as “Uncle Tom Blackwell, the other white meat,” promising “to smear him in the African American [sic] community,” and expressing the hope that “Ohio dems [sic] officials see it like I do.”

Barack Obama will have to choose his path sooner rather than later. As he will soon discover, the path of least resistance within his own party is clear: remain on the reservation, and receive unbending support – regardless of how out-of-bounds you may go. An example of the forgiveness available to those who stay in line is Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA), who was given a standing ovation by the Congressional Black Caucus upon his re-elective return to Washington, despite his being caught accepting bribes and hiding cash.

On the other hand, the tougher path involves much more risk, and very little reward from the left side of the aisle, or from today’s civil rights leaders. This path requires original thought, the willingness to question separatist politics, and the courage to march to a different beat than those who set the standard for “acceptable” black leaders.

At least one Democratic candidate is doubtless hoping that Barack Obama, the media’s current darling, opts for the latter option, and thus becomes unpalatable to the kingmakers of the African-American political movement. Should this unlikely development occur, Hillary Clinton, wife of the “First Black President,” will no doubt be waiting in the wings to scoop up America’s black vote.

Hussien Obama
Continue to use his middle name when talking about him and you'll make everyone believe he's a Muslim -- that will certainly help to defeat him among the ignoranti. I like it.

Obama's fascination for the Lefties and the ACLUnatics is, though they don't realize it, that he is not the son of slaves nor indeed has he been brought up in the plantation culture. Every other Black candidate is tainted by this particular stain, and just like the Ponytail Hippie generation, we'll have to wait for the Slave Generation to die off before things will improve. My sons' generation never define their friends by skin colour and their Black friends don't expect special treatment or have any interest in slavery.

Hussien Obama is the bellwether for a generation without the seething resentment stirred up by the Sharptons of the world. He's not going anywhere -- but if somebody with a brain can get out there and start the discussion among Black people, this could be a good thing.

slow to warm
i think the right wing conservatives are throwing out a spin that jackson and sharpton and "black leadership" is not warming up to obama.i haven't heard anything said negatively by these two gentlemen. i think on the republican side of the house a ticket with secretary rice and john mccain would be just great for all of america. she's done a wonderful job for the country, is very articulate, as well as mccain. i know when 9/11 occured, after hearing a speech by this man i called st. louis and was ready to enlist again, unfortunately i was too old to be called back to active duty. if not a rice/ mccain ticket, let's see how well a rice/powell ticket would work or a clinton/obama ticket. we need fresh blood in government, why not give obama, rice, mccain and powell and clinton a chance. contrary to popular spin, belafonte, jackson, sharpton and all of america would support them. we need leadership that will inspire all of us, not just some of us. obama, rice, clinton, mccain and powell in 2008. remember america, the rest of the world have had women leaders to include some muslim countries. it's time for america to follow suit.

They aren't "warming" to
Obama because he threatens their "leadership".
Even though he is a dem, he shoots down the image that blacks cannot succeed without the help of the dems. They call black conservatives names because they succeeded as well, just like the arabs hate the Jews in Israel whose very existance proves how inadequate the arabs are.

Just look at the vitriol that was heaped on Bill Cosby for his very accurate description of what is wrong with the black community, now THAT was leadership. He was excoriated for "washing their laundry in public", well someone had to say it.

I once had a teacher who said that blacks had a warped sense of values, a comment that would get her fired today, but was right on target then and still is today and therein lies the problem.

When they stop listening to fools who tell them they need help, they'll be able to gain their rightful place in society, when they earn respect, they'll get it. Funny how Dr Rice, Gen Powell,Thomas Sowell and many many other great Americans who just happen to be black are almost universally respected by whites are routinely "dissed" by blacks. They get put down because the others cannot hope to emulate them, they put the lie to everything the sharptons and jacksons represent and some day they will get the respect in they deserve.

It's A Club
And Obama hasn't paid his dues. Nor is it an easy task to cast him as one of the "victims" of an evil white society. This puts him outside the scripted version of racial politics that sustains Jackson, Sharpton and the rest of that bunch. I am not an Obama fan, but you can see the same Black prejudices operating whenever any bright, independent-thinking young Blacks rises out of the tired muck preached by the rabble rousers. They are uniformly criticized and distained by the "old civil-rights guard."

Black ideology
dictates eternal victimhood.

Obama hasn't been welcomed into the black community because he hasn't played the race card yet. He will, given time.

First, Obama has to play up his "farmer" father who apparently had made enough money "farming" to send his kid to Harvard University. Once the myth of Obama's "African roots" gets ingrained into the American psyche, Obama will start up the mantra about America being "racist".

Obama, a child of wealth, privilege and opportunity, has to remake his "black" image. He'll downplay his upper-class roots and accentuate his Africanism. Pandering to the black community, eventually he'll be considered one of them.

None of the People you mentioned
are considered by black people to be "black leaders". they are political activist.

Forget about White House
I just don't see Mister Barack Hussien Obama ever making it to the White House. President Hussien Obama, I don't think that will ever float in the United States. Whoever said he may the Anti-Christ may have know something the rest of us do not.

Slow to warm up?
It is no wonder that people are slow to warm up to Obama.

These days it is hard to warm up at all!

I am, of course, speaking of the bogus notion of "Global Warming."

I have just written a post on this subject called: "What about that Global Warming?"

Drop by my blog and comment!

OBAMA, THE ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN?
ARGUABLY, OBAMA IS THE ONLY TRUE AFRICAN-AMERICAN TO HAVE MADE IT TO OUR PUBLIC CONSCIOUSNESS. I WONDER IF HE SPEAKS ANY "NATIVE" TONGUE? THAT WOULD MAKE OBAMA EVEN MORE AUTHENTIC.

"AFRICAN-AMERICAN" IS AN OBVIOUS PC TERM THAT WAS FOISTED UPON US BY A POLITICAL GROUP. ALL OTHER HYPHENATED AMERICANS WERE SO DESIGNATED BY THE POPULACE AT LARGE. ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICANS ARE SELF NAMED. AND, IF THE HYPHENATION REFERS TO CULTURE TO ANY EXTENT AT ALL, IT IS LESS DESERVED BY "AFRICAN-AMERICANS" THAN ANY OTHER GROUP. GREEK AMERICANS, FOR EXAMPLE, GENERALLY SPEAK GREEK OR AT LEAST THEIR PARENTS DO. HOW MANY TOTALLY MADE IN AMERICAN AFRICAN-AMERICANS SPEAK SWAHILI, OR HAUSA, OR TUTSI? THE TERM AS APPLIED IS SIMPLY RIDICULOUS. OBAMA IS AN IMPLICIT EMBARASSMENT TO ALL WHO HAVE ADOPTED THE PRESUMPTUOUS AND MEANINGLESS APPELATION OF "AFRICAN AMERICAN".

OBAMA'S CANDIDACY MIGHT CAUSE BLACK AMERICANS TO PAUSE AND LOOK AT WHERE THEIR AFFIRMATIVE ACTION CHITS ARE ACTUALLY GOING THESE DAYS. INCREASINGLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN QUOTAS ARE BEING FILLED BY ACTUAL AFRICAN AMERICANS FROM NIGERIA, SOUTH AFRICA, ETC. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT OBAMA IS JUST AN EMBARASSMENT ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT HIM.

I WONDER IF SAY AN IMMIGRANT OF PORTUGESE BACKGROUND FROM SOUTH AFRICAN COULD QUALIFY AS "AFRICAN-AMERICAN" WHEN APPLYING FOR ADMISSION TO A UNIVERSITY. INSOFAR AS DIVERSITY IS CONCERNED SUCH AN INDIVIDUAL WOULD BE FAR MORE DIVERSE THAN A HOME GROWN AFRICAN-AMERICAN WHO WATCHED THE SAME CARTOON SHOWS AS EVERYONE ELSE AND WENT TO THE SAME PUBLIC SCHOOLS AS EVERYONE ELSE. JUST BY HIS EXISTENCE OBAMA COULD CAUSE ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS.

global warming
i'm in colorado and waiting for double digits. global warming ... if only

treadmill joe
The term African-American is unique because it , like Asian-American refer to an entire continent rather than an individual country. Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese people ate being lumped together that way, and many find that label insulting. Interesting a tall blonde white skinned dutch South African or tan-skinned Egyptian are also "African", but I don't think the Jacksons and Sharptons want them in their "club".

Obama is like the child in "the Emporor's new clothes" who reveals that the cloak of racism no longer exists, and that racial barriers to success are not there. So blacks fail to succeed becasue they have don't try to succeed, having been hood-winked into not even trying.

Double standard frustrates
Can you imagine the outcry if a conservative journalist, politician or private citizen ever referred to a black man as Buckwheat during any exchange or argument, whether in a forum such as a public debate, or in a column, or on TV or radio? Why, how do we let the Marxists get away with it when they do?

Augh!

theBaron
No need to imagine, just substitute macaca for Buckwheat!

The old south ain't dead eh Jeff?
Hmmmm!!!
"Barack Hussein Obama" eh???

so, ya don't think that cheapens any further remark you make, or knocks YOU down a couple of pegs in the intellectual scale.

why not play up that Obama rhymes with OSAMA!!

WOW!!

I pity our ideal, when folks like you pass as intelligent and literate.

I don't agree with what I've heard from him, but I bet he gets plenty of sympathy votes, because faux conservative bullies with columns - and very little intellectual firepower, try and "Charectar assassinate" loyal patriotic AMERICAN public servants, via name associations.

HEEEY Jeff!!!
that therrr feller's gotta white momma too. . . . . hell we should string him up for that

eh???

I really want to read your comments on that.

Ummmmm.... "Me"?
You do know that "Hussein" is his actual middle name, don't you?

John S
yeah, AND!!!

when Jimmy Carter wanted to go by Jimmy, the press didn't say "hell no" we will call you James Earl.

The Press didn't go around posting Ronald Wilson
or William Jefferson.

I'm sure that Obama's proud of his middle name, but you and I both know why Jeff post's it, don't we.

why, it's so we don't confuse him with Barack ADOLPH Obama, or Barack IDI Obama.

Audi R10

Obama Is A Muslim!

Remember a muslim believes it is perfectly moral to lie to you, a non muslim, or cheat you or steal from you or kill you.

Barack Obama is a Congressman from the Chicago area, and a candidate for the Democratic Presidential race. We must look below the surface at ALL candidates.

Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu , Hawaii , to Barack Hussein Obama Sr. (black muslim) of Nyangoma-Kogelo, Siaya District , Kenya , and Ann Dunham of Wichita , Kansas . (a white atheist).

When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced and his father returned to Kenya . His mother married Lolo Soetoro -- a Muslim -- moving to Jakarta with Obama when he was six years old. Within six months he had learned to speak the Indonesian language. Obama spent two years in a Muslim school, then two more in a Catholic school" inJakarta. Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim while admitting that he was once a Muslim, mitigating that damning information by saying that, for two years, he also attended a Catholic school.

Obama's father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. was a radical Muslim who migrated from Kenya to Jakarta , Indonesia . He met Obama's mother, Ann Dunham—a white atheist from Wichita , Kansas—at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Obama, Sr. and Dunham divorced when Barack, Jr. was two. Obama's spinmeisters are now attempting to make it appear that Obama's introduction to Islam came from his father and that influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya immediately following the divorce and never again had any direct influence over his son's education.

Dunham married another Muslim, Lolo Soetoro who educated his stepson as a good Muslim by enrolling him in one of Jakarta 's Wahabbi schools. Wahabbism is the radical teaching that created the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad on the industrialized world. Since it is politically expedient to be a Christian when you are seeking political office in the United States , Obama joined the United Church of Christ to help purge any notion that he is still a Muslim.

Maybe not enough for a conviction in a court of law but damn sure enough to keep him from steering the country.

Can you please stop.
Topics like these show how far we have not come. All white people don't like to be and should not be lumped together. Neither should all blacks. Qualify your statements please.

I am a conservative, independent black American and these men do not represent me. Yes, black people have more of our "kind" who have so problems because they have given into the plantation/victimization mentality. You also have some white people who are lazy, don't work and want handouts.

Black people don't lack values as someone alluded to SOME black people who are caught up in the ghetto mentality do. Are all whites racist because some are? No you all don't like to be judged unfairly. Neither do we. I work hard to help my family, just like you. I think for myself, just like you. I have attended and graduated with over a 3.0 GPA (so affirmative action may have gotten me there, but it did not produce my grades), just like some of you. I have no loyalty to Sharpton, Jackson, Obama or Belafonte. I have more in common with some of you than my "own people". If anything, some of you are more "my people" than other black Americans. I happen to be black but I am AMERICAN and proud of it. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE STOP JUDGING ALL OF US BY THE WAY THAT SOME OF US BEHAVE!!!

orea cookie
I can certainly see the orea cookie thing. Obama's mother was white and he was raised with her and his white grandparents. However he believes in affirmative action with which I disagree because it is a racist idea.

Heather
We welcome you with open arms. Just like we did Colin Powell, Condi, Steele, etc. I myself wish that more blacks follwed in your footsteps!

Well done.

Heather
I admire your patience and forthrightness in objecting to the nitwit generalizations included in, and triggered by the Obama column. I would not have been so restrained. It must be extremely tiresome for you to be expected to be representative of some group or other, rather than an individual who obviously can think for herself.

I would hate to be expected to be a spokesman for the rest of the people who sort of look like me. They run the gamut from saints to serial killers, but heck, I'm only myself, nothing very dramatic, only a nerdy former farmer who reads a lot. You just keep being yourself, too.

I hope that in time Barack Obama can be evaluated on something other than a spokesman for his race, background, unique combination of the above, or some such silliness. Harry Belafonte is one of those show biz characters who is an outstanding performer, providing some of my earliest childhood memories of lilting, romantic songs. He should never have entered politics; most of what he says is embarassing. Snow white actresses like Jessica Lange and Barbra Streisand are even worse. It makes me long for the day when actors were held in such ill repute they were expected to keep quiet off stage.

As for the merits of Obama's positions -- to me he seems like a matinee idol-handsome dispenser of non-committal, soothing platitudes, although not as empty-headed or anachronistic as matinee idol-handsome white man John Edwards.

Tancredo
Just saw him on Fox. He's running. His website is teamtancredo.

Obama may be great for US
It's too early to judge Obama's qualifications yet. But I have been deeply impressed by his two books.

As for his religion, he belongs to the United Church of Christ, which traces its origin to Plymouth and the Pilgrims. Anything more American than that?

Probably people like Jackson and Sharpton are jealous. I think that if Obama's qualifications add up, his election could do wonders for the US in our war against terrorism, improve our image enormously in most of the world, and help heal old wounds here in the USA. I hope to vote for him and that he would win.

Roy
The problem is that Obama has NO qualifivations to speak of! He has never had to goovern, he has not even been a Senator for a full term yet...just what does he have that makes him a viable presidential candidate? He is the master of talking long and saying little; everything he says is some type of platitude or other, never anything of substance.

To be honest, I would rather see Hillary Clinton as President before Barak Obama, because at least we know who Hillary is and could deal with her. No one knows Obama, because I suspect there isn't any THERE there. How is some lightweight pol from Chicago going to advance our national interests worldwide? What has he done or said that makes you believe that he could do wonders for us in the war against the Islamists, help heal old wounds, or restore our image in the world? You, my good man(?) are falling victim to the hype! Try to dig abit deeper before you annoint Obama as the saviour, okay?

Heather
Thank you for pointing out that there are blacks who do not see Jackson, Sharton, et al, as their leaders and spokesmen. Unfortunately the problem is that these people are portrayed as the leaders of the entire African-American community by the MSM. And those blacks who reject their left-wing position are attacked as Uncle Toms, Aunt Jemimas, oreos and plenty of other pejoratives.

It is not too unlike the moderate muslims who say that the radicals do not speak for them. The alternatives of "moderate (or even conservative) black voices are not heard in the press. And when 90+% of them vote in an apparent bloc for the Democrats it is difficult to see them as other than followers of the liberal (and Jackson/Sharpton) party line. Just as it is difficult to see moderate Muslims when all we see are Muslims everywhere dancing in the street anytime the radicals bomb another western country. You and other moderate blacks need to be more vocal that the Jackons and Sharptons don't speak for you.

Heather
No,blacks are not a monolithic group, only about 87 to 96% vote democrat."Black leaders" however are of one mindset:Divide us all into groups and make sure to get a big payoff no matter how things shake out.

If however,"the black community" were to embrace those who preach self reliance, industriousness and a basic work ethic(see:T.Sowell,Walter Williams,Jesse Lee Peterson,Cosby,Star Parker,Justices Clarence Thomas and Janice Rodgers Brown to name a very small few)then maybe the the race bating "klan with a tan" would start to lose their traction.

Until enough Americans of any and all races step up and say,"No! Charlie Rangel is a destructive,un-American,hateful,lying piece of garbage!" etc. and they are not then intimidated or worse yet,as is now the case with the MSM,virtually ignored, then scum like him and the others will continue to dominate the landscape.

The reason why white racism isn't near as bad as it used to be is because it just isn't as acceptable anymore. The same thing must happen with black racism, starting with very clear and vocal messages being sent to the true haters, the ones who scream racism for their own benefit while ignoring all of the destruction caused by blacks against themselves.

If Obama Was White
He would be just another Junior Senator from a Midwestern State.

buck
No, he'd be getting seriously slapped around by Der Fuerher Frau Clinton.

The MSM would be slicing and dicing him for his absolute lack of military and political experience.

And the people of Illinois would be out for blood after he voted to raise their taxes and fees across the board.

If, if, if. . .

Think about this, buck:

If we didn't go by the "one drop rule," Obama would be white. Tradition determines that if you have "one drop of black blood," i.e. one ancestor out of eight great-grandparents, or even sixteen great grandparents, yielding the least detectable, sub-Saharan African physiognomy, then you are "black." If the one drop rule were reversed, so that one white ancestor out of sixteen made you "white," there would be a lot fewer official "blacks" in the United States.

Apply this principle to orientals, native Americans, Indians of the subcontinent, polynesians and so on and there would be very few "pure" anybodies. Some of the Latin American countries like Puerto Rico, Colombia and Panama have so many mixtures and permutations of "bloodlines" that one of those cards asking you to check off your "race" could fill in every box out of eight.

And that's leaving out the reality that nobody's "blood" is black, white, yellow or brown; it's all red.

Race is a archaic category IMHO. Color is real, but race as commonly referred to is usually conjured up for convenient political or social labeling. If it didn't result in so much animosity, racial categorization might be amusing. For two examples, the Irish and English were at each other's throats for centuries and used racial stereotypes against each other; ditto for Arabs and Jews in the Middle East. Yet if a Martian came down on a spaceship and landed in either place, could he tell those "races" apart?

Maybe someday we can stop fussing over trifles and focus on what's really important -- "character" as Dr. Martin Luther King called it.

Jack...
You may well be right that Blacks have a different view of "Black Leaders". However, the folks we are presented by the MSM as the spokespeople for the Black community are folks like Sharpton.

Jack, Colosteve gets it.
Notice how the term “Leaders of Black America” is in quotes in the column.

That's a send-up to the MSM, who has anointed them as the leaders, much like Ted Haggard could be called a "Leader of the Religious Right" simply because the MSM decided that that's what he was, despite the fact that a very low percentage of American Christians - myself included - had ever even heard of him.

Colosteve's comment above was also very accurate with regard to this subject:

"It is not too unlike the moderate muslims who say that the radicals do not speak for them. You and other moderate blacks need to be more vocal that the Jackons and Sharptons don't speak for you."

Correct, they don't represent you. However, those on the outside looking in would be hard-pressed to find evidence of that based on the canonization of those “Leaders of Black America” by the MSM, who is the primary source of information for so many.

Jack & Jeff
Jeff, thanks for "understanding" what I was saying. And Jack, I agree wholeheartedly that the Black community should decide who their leaders are but as Jeff pointed out, what the MSM has anointed as the leaders for the African-American community is obviously at odds with what the survey you quoted states (although it did still give Jesse Jack$on the number one spot but surprisingly it gave the second spot to one who has been called all kinds of nasty names by those on the left).

Jeff...
I just realized that you are the author of the column. I am glad that you do read the comments to your column and that I actually wrote clearly enough for you to understand what I was saying (I'm an engineer by training so riting isn't my strong suit! :-)
