Will Obama Become the Statesman that America Needs?

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

One of the factors that unites a nation is its shared values — a universal understanding about such things as what is right or wrong, legal or illegal, good or bad. These commonalities were referred to by Philip Rieff, an author of the 1960s, as “a system of moralizing demands.” According to Rieff, those leaders who live up to the moralizing demands of leadership, always a minority, are accorded the title of “statesman,” and that high honor is an accolade greatly desired. Such leaders keep the culture from disintegrating by embodying those qualities admired by the public and effectively articulating and restating those values necessary for society to be regenerated and renewed for contemporary times.

In the absence of statesmanship, society crumbles as crucial values cease to be reflected in leaders’ behavior or in governmental and institutional processes; inevitably, then, those values are also absent from the public square and are not embodied in peoples’ everyday interactions.

Sadly, statesmen are increasingly rare today, and the weakening of society’s fabric reflects the loss.

Time was, politicians were expected to rise above mere party loyalties on questions of universal import for society and especially in circumstances affecting national well-being. Obviously, a pluralistic community will always have conflicting values and differing positions on issues. Such conflicts are, at once, the price of democracy as well as a source of vitality and strength. But when division and discord reach a “tipping point,” when those qualities that produce consensus disappear, the whole of society suffers from the disintegration.

The question of the day is whether in President-elect Barack Obama we have a leader who can rise above the perpetual campaign that has characterized the presidency and plagued the nation in recent decades in order to become the statesman that America needs in these days of terrorist threats, domestic instability and financial crisis.

In the recent election campaign, the level of political discourse disintegrated shamefully as winning at all costs triumphed with increasing frequency over principled stances. We saw politicians screaming, ranting, attacking America’s foreign policies, and criticizing military decisions in the midst of a war. In the recent election campaign, we heard lies and distortions cloaked as “political spin.” Political rhetoric often disintegrated into demagoguery. Personal attacks and character assassination became routine.

With such rhetoric, demagoguery and personal vilification being accepted as merely “politics as usual,” is it any wonder that trust — a fundamental requirement for democracy to function effectively — is diminishing? Is it any wonder that such “leaders” fail in a basic leadership quality, that of being a symbol to the people, the personification of noble character?

Is it any wonder that such actions by the nation’s leaders fail to provide what James MacGregor Burns called “transformational leadership”?

The eyes of the world look on through 24-hour cable television coverage, and people develop an image of America and democracy from the words and actions that they observe in our political leaders. Given the politics of personal destruction that have come to characterize our political debates arcing lower and lower since the dishonest and despicable “Borking” of a distinguished American jurist merely because his opponents wanted to preserve the heinous “un-natural” right of a women to murder her infant in her womb, it is little wonder if the world and we ourselves have little respect for what is seen and heard from our so-called national leaders.

It is often said that the voters get the leaders and government they deserve. Have we become so childish, so selfish and self-absorbed as a people, that we will haplessly — no, make that joyfully — embrace politicians who are equally as selfish and self-absorbed? Are we as a people so morally bankrupt that we casually accept the Machiavellian dictum that to be a leader “you must be a great liar and a hypocrite”?

As in the days of the American Revolution and the Civil War, America has never needed real statesmen more — committed, determined, courageous souls who will embody and reinforce the universal “system of moralizing demands” that constitute a civil and thriving society. Will Americans be like the highly-educated Germans who accepted Hitler’s and Goebbels’ lies? Will we, like them, blindly embrace the lie of the “merciful death” as a means of ridding ourselves of the burden of caring for unwanted infants, the ill, the weak and the dependent, all the while hypocritically demanding that government dole out benefits to lessen our own perceived hardships?

Having sipped from the insidious cup of deceit and calling it “truth” simply because its proponents speak loudly, fervently and passionately, will we now drown all moral messages with its bitter dregs?

Let us hope — and pray — that the fires of the national crises we face will purge the soul of our new leader until he turns from telling the people what appears expedient for his political future and instead begins leading our nation according to truths spoken by the founding fathers and in so doing becomes the great statesman that the times demand.

Statesmen?
As a general rule people who aspire to be statesmen aren't.

those who mythologize history
This column has some relevance for discussions of how history should be taught. Conservatives tend to think history should be taught as national myth making, one can see that in O'reilly's current horror that schools would include the Indians in their discussion of Thanksgiving, and not just as magical creatures here to feed us while we claimed our land.

Liberals are more inclined to want students to actually learn what happened rather than what we wished happened.

The problem with the former approach is that people can come to believe the myths and think that in the past during times of crises the politicians did not spin and malign each other, etc.

Those silly historians who care about truth note that this election was not a particularly dirty election. There were real issues being debated, and the result of the election was probably a reflection of those differences.

Sure there were idiots accusing the winning candidate of being a socialist, but when the "greatest generation" was young there were idiots saying the same thing about Roosevelt. And worse was said about Lincoln and Jefferson.

Obama a Statesman.

Well he hasn't accomplished much in his life so far so I guess hes do to accomplish something.

HMM
The world may never know! He may never take the seat of President due to his inability to prove he is a Natural Born Citizen! It really would be quite the Historical Moment when the Annointed One is thrown off his thrown as a fraud and the biggest liar in American History!

We HAD a statesman running
in this election, his name was John McCain.
A man who served this country all of his life and yet loses the election to the least experienced man to ever run for the office.

Mccain had stature recognized throughout the world as a proven leader, we get a clown who has to surround himself with advisors who despise him and will undermine him at every opportunity.

Lon posts about liberals wanting to teach the truth, very funny, liberals want to whitwash everything and hide behind PC to avoid the truth.

Anyone that refuses to see that obama is a socialist at BEST and a marxist at heart is blind to the real truth about this guy and where he would "lead" this country..he is a liar and proved it many times during the campaign, they all lie, but this guy elevates it to an art form and cannot be trusted.

The real issues were NEVER debated in this election, the main one was obama's unsuitability for the office in the 1st place and his second-guessing of general officers when he couldn't find the latrine without help.

The thought of this fool as CinC of the military I love and spent a third of my life in makes me sick.

Obama
It is interesting that some people continue to perpetuate the myth that Obama has never accomplished anything in his life. Here is a guy who came from poor parents, was raised by his grandparents, overcame a drug habit, got scholarships to go to prestige prep schools and colleges, got a law degree with honors, was President of Harvard Review, worked for the poor, taught Constitutional Law, became a state Senator and finally a U.S. Senator. He was on Committees for Foreign Affairs; Health Education, Labor and Pensions; and Homeland Security. He along with Chuck Luger wrote legislation on nuclear non-proliferation. He ran probably the best and most organized Presidential campaign that the country has ever seen.

Also, Obama isn't the kind of guy who is going to walk up behind the German Chancelor and give her a neck rub. He looks and acts every bit the statesman so let us hope that he lives up to his billing because our country needs to mend relations with the rest of the world that the previous administration destroyed.

No worries
As in the general election and prior, Obama has made a name for himself as a Lincolnist as a backwoods politician with a variation on the theme of a flip flopper, pragmatical hider of the obvious truth, and gambler with no responsibility. It is no doubt that Barack is just a novice at this point in time, look at the way he pretends to be president while shielding himself by labeling his non-descript "Office of President-Elect". We have no better Prez elect than B. Obama the Great Pretender. You see how he uses his organizational skills to gather his cabinet together, just shy of being self inclusionary. Oh yes, he does talk the talk, but................. I can't see what effectiveness he brings to the table yet.

Mythologizing History?
"This column has some relevance for discussions of how history should be taught. Conservatives tend to think history should be taught as national myth making, one can see that in O'reilly's current horror that schools would include the Indians in their discussion of Thanksgiving, and not just as magical creatures here to feed us while we claimed our land."

If I'm not mistaken, Mr. O'Reilly was upset by the desire of educators to focus on the regrettable atrocities committed against the Native Americans by the pilgrims after the alleged first Thanksgiving as though these atrocities were somehow an integral part of the formation and continuing celebration of Thanksgiving.

"Liberals are more inclined to want students to actually learn what happened rather than what we wished happened."

In all due respect, this is simply quite hard to believe. Indeed, based on my own anecdotal evidence, it is downright impossible to believe. In my experience, Liberals don't want students to "actually learn what happened rather than what we wished happened." Rather, the Liberals wish to rewrite, deconstruct, and/or revise history to fit their own metanarrative. Then, if one disagrees, they will accuse them of being bigoted, racist, delusional, et cetera. If anything, it is this revision which is the only mythologizing of history that is actually going on.

Statesman
Miss Janice,
When you have returned from "Nana Land," please do let us hear from you again.
You see, Miss Janice, it a question of, Statesman for what, and to what end.
Should you really care, do your homework and determine what this individual is all about.

Seth
If you want a little revisionist history just listen to Shrub and Turdblossom as they rewrite the last 8 years of W's Presidency.

NAME ONE STATESMAN IN OUR GOVERNMENT
I have asked this question of many people if they could name one person serving in our government who they would consider to be a statesman. I usually receive blank stares instead of an answer. If President Elect Obama can achieve that I will give him more credit than I do today. To me he is a self serving inexperienced junior senator who will have to handle a full plate to prove himself. Theory and ideology may be great at Harvard and table discussions with Bill Ayers and Khalili, but we are now in the real world Mr. Obama!

He's no statesman
His arrogance in refusing to provide a birth certificate that would put the question of his citizenship to rest is an example....if he has one.

Converted Statesmen,Ayers & Obama
William Ayers has an article in today's paper explaining his life as a terrorist. Of course,he does not call himself an ex-terrorist. He has been converted.

Our almost president-elect was picked up off the streets of Chicago, whisked away and 'rehabilitated 'as preparation for politics and ultimately PRESIDENT.

Now,the saying "you can put lipstick on a pig,but it's still a pig" applies here. His street life of a druggie and his manipulations of candidates to steal political offices are supposed to be forgiven and forgotten.

Had a Republican with a past even remotely having the odor of this one tried this scheme, they would have been laughed at, humiliated and kicked to the curb.

All is not lost with this neophyte, however,he has selected the fine upstanding group who made the Clinton Administration the most ethical in history. We can expect nothing less than perfection for the next four years.

Pass the hat for the UAW?
Subject: Help the Autoworkers?
The average UAW worker gets $73 dollars in total compensation compared to $43 in total compensation paid to the non union autoworkers in the Honda,Toyota,Nissan and other foreign automobile manufactures in the US. BUT WHAT you never see on the main stream media is how much that works out to annually. $73 X 40 hours per week = $2,920 weekly X 52 weeks is $151,840 annually. Now that includes the value of benefits of course but why should the average American who makes $48,000/year or less be asked to support these radically overpaid autoworkers and their political hack friends?

Nation's Moral Compass?
Good article and a reminder of our wayward ways that will lead inexorably to a crashing reality: Extinction of the Nation.

Sometimes I think that as a Nation we have lost our moral compass, our conscience, our sense of outrage. The sanctity of life should be protected, the helpless conceived life to the newborn and on stages of life being a no-brainer for protection. The death penalty for criminals having committed heinous offenses is an exception, assuming a fair trial. But liberals/feminists have turned this issue completely on its head: Abort at will and spare the serial killers and such. Is this insanity or what? The left also is more apt to take us on the path to fascism with BIG government dictating every aspect of the citizens’ lives. It’s already happened in family law where the sanctity and rights of the family is being violated unmercifully to fit some distorted, unnatural agenda that’s completely at odds with the freedoms supposedly guaranteed by the Constitution. Disgusting!!! When is the outrage that should be exploding from all level-headed conservatives going to happen to redress these wrongs? It’s long overdue!

Basic facts to me are that people who are love struck with the pretender Nobama have no respect for the Constitution or are sorely ignorant of its magnificence and they must likewise have no respect for a lean government run FOR the people and that maximizes freedoms for all. It further seems to me that obsessive self-interest is what is driving the democrats/liberals rather than the ideals of liberty as envisioned by the Fore Fathers.

Moral Leadership?
Obama lost me at the Rick Warren symposium on values. The question of when life begins is not amenable to a nuanced answer in which the man who would be leader claims that its answer is "above [his] paygrade." As commander-in-chief matters of life and death are most certainly within his paygrade. His "most difficult decision"? To risk his political future by taking a stand against the war, a position favored by his constiuents, and based on no access to intelligence. Big Deal! Sounds like a rash decsion without risk.

Statesman--Not in this life.

Reply to Nickel ...
I listened to a production chief on the auto line the other day speaking of the suffering by his crew due to the precariousness of their employment situation. The reporter asked him what the men on the line actually made and he replied that the average hourly income is $15/hr. The UAW and the auto moguls have OKd the declining hourly wages for some time now. Also, on the Mike Huckabee program a week ago, he asked a couple of line workers what they made. They also reiterated that their average pay is approximately $15/hr. Despite benefits, the hourly wage is what you have to live on, pay your bills, take care of your family, etc. I know.

Slim to none
and Slim just boarded the last train to the coast. Obama is a career politician. He hasn't shown much of his nitty-gritty core, but he has shown he is a pragmitist. That means he will do,say, undo or deny what it takes to promote his own interests. Right now that means getting re-elected in 2012. That's not to say he won't be a decent president, the two are not mutually exclusive. But considering the state we're in and the idiot agenda of his base, the odds against are appalling. My bet is Peanut Jimmie redux.

Nope
eom

Seth
I think you are mistaken. In an article full of hyperbole, O'Reilly complains about them simply teaching about what happened to the Indians. That suggests that they were including them in their history classes, not that they were focusing on them to the exclusion of the Pilgrims or the Thanksgiving story.

When you talk about what actually happening having no part in the formation and celebration of Thanksgiving you are talking precisely about mythmaking. That is holidays are about, but should not be what history is about.

And I noticed you did not comment on Crouse's mistaken belief that politics was less divisive during the civil war era or the era of the founding fathers. There we have two examples of conservaties wanted history to be taught in a way that is cleaner than reality was. Liberals can be guilty of the same, but it would help the case that they are if one saw actual liberals areguing for false depictions in history the way we here see actual conservatives either cleaning up history, or complaining tha tothers are not doing so.

Do you have a better example of liberals trying to misrepresent history than an attempt to portray the history of hte Indians as well as the settlers? If history has been whitewashed to the degree that Crouse is so misinformed about how the past actually was, then our teaching of history should be revised to be more accurate and complete.

Obama's Problem
Obama has placed himself into a very difficult position. If he tries to govern based on his hard left voting record and public positions such as raising taxes in the middle of a recession, pursuing policies that would bankrupt the coal industry, and appoint judges who dispense justice based economic circumstances (making a mockery of the age old principle that justice is blind) it goes without saying that he will wreck the country and likely be a one term president.
If he keeps moving to the center he will leave the far-left voters who put him in power deeply disillusioned (I can't wait to see what happens next year when "Bush's war" in Iraq and Afghanistan turns into "Obama's war" because Obama doesn't bring the troops home immediately.) Conservatives will be momentarily delighted but still deeply suspicious of a man who suddenly seems to turn his back on his entire past hard left positions and voting record. That's what happens if you campaign one way and try to govern another way.
And Obama has done absolutely nothing to justify the fawning adoration he gets in the liberal media. His only real talent is the ability to read a prepared speech.

Steve
He projects an image that got him elected president, albeit with massive help from the MSM. That takes talent. A pity it doesn't have much to do with effective governance.

America's furor
America has never needed real statesmen more — committed, determined, courageous souls who will embody and reinforce the universal “system of moralizing demands” that constitute a civil and thriving society.WE HAVE A PRESIDENT LIKE THIS (BUSH) and the democrats trashed him....The democrats have cheated, lied and bought a new furor for America.. Actually I think Obama will be worse that a Furor...Germany's furor actually thought in his abnormal mind that he was helping Germany... Obama on the other hand is for the present enthralled with the idea of the office of the presidency...He doesn't have a clue what the presidency is really all about..I fear his motives are far more evil than is perceived yet...

Rewriting History
From Lon: Do you have a better example of liberals trying to misrepresent history than an attempt to portray the history of hte Indians as well as the settlers? <

You can start with the recent attempt to rewrite history at the new Capitol Visitor Center, which incorrectly stated that the nation's motto was "E Pluribus Unum" when it is actually "In God We Trust". That and other references to religion are carefully suppressed from the displays in an attempt by liberals to rewrite history denying the religious heritage our country was based on.

Absolutely not....
He's out after one term. He wants to start with a 700 billion "stimulus". It's just more feed for the special interest hogs and necessarily means continued economic decline for this country. Government can't create jobs out of thin air and it has to tax in some form to do such a thing. But liberals and Democrats are big on sacrifices and that's what we're going to continue to get. Obama is just another operative; nowhere near a statesman.

WHAT WOULD A STATESMAN DO?

.....Would a Statesman announce to the World that he would have unconditional talks with leaders of terrorist nations? ...

.....Would he strip our military, dismantle missle defense systems and dispose of our nuclear weapons? ...

.....Would he eliminate the secret ballot to pay back unions for their support? ...

.....Would he sign a bill that lifted all State restrictions on abortion? ...

.....Would he trash the Constitution he swears to defend and uphold by appointing judges that would rule on social "justice" instead of the law? ...

.....If so ...then that is the Statesmanship I do not want .....COLOSSUS

Patriots unite ... there is ...
Still time to sign the WND petition to compel Barack Hussein Obama aka Barry Soetoro to prove that he is a Natural Born Citizen:

Go to this link:

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=81550

It takes more than one

A crisis makes a statesman. It's not a one-way street, it takes more than the person named.

If no one pitched a ball to Babe Ruth, he would not have hit home runs.

With no WW II No one would have heard of Eisenhower.

If it wasn't for Monica, Clinton would not have been impeached.

If it wasn't for my Most Beautiful Sweetie, I would have amounted to much less than I did.

And on and on and on.

Obama is no...
more a statesman than I am!

Obama is a boy wonder, pushed into prominence by the DNC and back by George Soros & Company's money.

He has done nothing of subtance to earn the job as POTUS. When many those who voted for him don't find money droppping into their outstretched hands they are going to be plenty PO'd!

Obama is a narcissist who thinks about nobody but himself. He craves attention and will stop at nothing to gain it. Now who does that remind you of?

baseballdoc -- TX 11:44 AM EST
Great Post.

I would add the following ...

A Statesman does not denegrate the citizenry of the Country he suppposedly represents (I think everyone here knows the comments our President-Elect made during the course of the campaign season).

A U.S. Statesman would not declare himself a "citizen of the world" in Europe during the campaign season.

LEADERSHIP & STATESMAN…TRUTH vs LIE…

TRUTH and not politics should be printed and spoken when ever and where ever it is being disparaged. For without “The Truth” being known, we find ourselves at this point in history. History has shown that our Freedom and Liberty is rooted in “The Truth”; and prevails only when “Un-truths” are confronted and dispelled. The source of these “Un-truths” must be known and made to acknowledge these “Un-truths”; for what they are, “LIES”.

Those that believe there is no such thing as “RIGHT” and “WRONG” cannot see anything but shades of gray. They will believe these “Un-truths” without questioning them. History has also shown that those who believe without questioning are the first to die by the millions.

I am sick of the media disgorging lies and half-truths; and politicians doing what they want, without regard for the common man and not doing what is best for America. Doing the politically correct thing instead of doing “WHAT IS RIGHT” for America and the common man is WRONG; and will be the down-fall of the greatest and most benevolent Nation on this Earth.

A statesman or stateswoman or statesperson is usually a politician or other notable figure of state that has had a long and respected career in politics at the national and international level. Statesperson ship also conveys a quality of leadership that brings people together and of eldership, a spirit of caring for others and for the whole. Anyone elected to office is a politician but only a few consistently manage to work as disinterested promoters of the public good with integrity. There is a huge difference between the two.

Obama is neither a leader nor statesman; he is nothing but a plain and simple junior politician. He is a Socialist/Marxist on a mission to “change” America into his image of what he thinks America should be.

GOD HELP US ALL!

Core Values...
There are core values that unite a very large majority of Americans. It is vital to have true Statesman in this country to pursue the goal of strengthening and revitalizing these core values. Their focus should clearly be to provide long-term solutions instead of short-term fixes and guide this country into a realistic 21st century. They should dramatically increase our investments in math and science at all levels of education. Not by throwing more money at the problem but by setting high standards for both teachers and students. For this will increase the new technologies and science required for success in the 21st century.

Clearly we need to change government, not America. Our governments at all levels continue to increase in size and scope, at the expense of our liberties and freedoms; continues to demand more in terms of cost without contributing meaningful gains. This continued erosion of our liberties and freedoms will at some point in the very near future be the downfall of the greatest and most benevolent nation the world has ever seen.

WE THE PEOPLE, need to get more involved by insisting that our elected officials at all levels of government DO and SAY the “RIGHT THINGS”; not what seems to be automatically presumed to be politically correct. For if we the people do nothing, we have only ourselves to blame.

Neal
"Our governments at all levels continue to increase in size and scope.."

You do realize we've had a Republican president the past eight years?

Neal
If you want to find out what is wrong with this country, you need to take a long, hard look at yourself in the mirror.

Constantly prattling on about tax cuts while spending like drunken sailors is a surefire path to a financial meltdown, as we are seeing now.

Steve
E pluribus unum has been used as a national motto since 1782. Congress never bothered to dub it such, but it was used routinely as such on coins and seals.

In the 1950's, when the red scare turned the country more childish, they did start throwing references to God everywhere in some bizarrre beleif that that would show the communists.

It was a silly mistake to label E Pluribus Unum as the national motto since its unofficial status as such was supplanted by the official dubbing in the 1950's. But it is hardly as histroically misleading as pretending that actions in the 1950's out of a panic were things that our country was founded on.

In a word
NO, never happen. He will however be "worshipped" by the left. Does that count?

Funny how I have heard the auto workers talk smack about and degenerate people who were on welfare and now they want theirs.
When some teamsters from the local came to my pops house (teamster for over 45 years) and ask if he was going to vote democrat as he is a registered democrat and has always voted so, he said He!l no!

If Only and baseballdoc
"..Would a Statesman announce to the World that he would have unconditional talks with leaders of terrorist nations?"

Perhaps phony Conservatives, like yourselves, have uttered, "America is in the fight of our lives...America is at a cross roads and the stakes are high, maybe even our lives."

Or, "The Democrats don't seem to even acknowledge that we are at war with a brutal throat slashing, burn people alive enemy that wants to destroy us. They'd pull our troops away from fighting in foreign countries with the inevitable result of the fight moving to our own homeland."

But, truth be told, the only way you are willing to pay for this engagement with the enemy is to hold onto your precious tax cut and raising the debt ceiling on the national credit card.

The War in Iraq, a social-engineering project, costs $12 billion a month. The cost per American is $40 a month for the past 5 1/2 years. If your family had actually been paying this bill from the get-go, your attitude would have been to 'cut and run' four years ago.

It's time to stop the 'drama queening' and if you think we should be in Iraq, and 'Operation Enduring Freedom' has national security value, then PAY for it, NOW!

STATES-MAN ?
Well, since barry has 'stated' our Country has 57 'States', he'd make an outstanding 'States-Man' were he to sell his additional 7 'states' on EBAY and use the proceeds to pay off our National debt and bailout all those pesky 'too big to fail' businesses.
Too bad our enemies know how to count, otherwise, barry could 'unconditionally' sell his 7 extra States to them.

Values versus virtues
Seeing that even Crouse substitutes the word "values" for "virtues" is evidence that the perspective she holds of our national social conditions can be defined by "values". There are eleven definitions for "values" in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary. The first is "A fair return in money, goods, services, etc. for something exchanged." And it is obvious that over the years "values clarification" has been influencing the thinking of citizens so that the meaning of "virtue" has been lost. If that is unbelievable, just look at what our society is continually seeing and hearing. "Virtue" is from the Latin "virtus" meaning "strength, courage, virtue". Moral practice, action, excellence, rectitude. Also moral quality. All those things have a source. It is the Creator God named in our national documents and by those who sought to infuse those things into governing. Where are they now? In short supply as demonstrated by events of the last election. It is time to get back to the true meaning of moral excellence and virtue. Hope and pray that as a nation we have not sunk too far into immoral and valueless existence.

I DON'T speak for baseballdoc, but here's my reply to your post -- huh? My comments were based upon the Presiden-Elects own words.

Your use of, "phony Conservatives, like yourselves" only serves to illustrate the fact that there is a decided lack of respect for others by people like yourself. Hmmm ...

I am not phony. Misguided as you may think I am, I believe what I write and I don't change for a particular audience, etc.

PART TWO

Given I have the computer acumen of an amoeba, my post was sent to you before I was finished with my comments.

Suffice it to say, I think I understand your point about the cost of the Iraq "war." But that does not negate the issue of "Statesmanship." I won't get into the issue of paying for government programs here. That's a different kettle of fish, in my opinion.

about Obama's plans
New taxes the Dems have written up in bills, waiting to be passed: The carbon credit tax, Rangel's tax, Obama's UN tax, Obama's gasoline tax, the gas pump tax, etc?

You can't convince a person or a corporation to start a new business or expand an existing business, increase jobs, and hire new employees when you tax away the money he is paying his present employees.

Every dollar that is taxed away from a business owner is a dollar that cannot be paid to an employee.

WE THE PEOPLE PAY ALL TAXES, and we the people are the only ultimate source of all tax revenue. Since there is only one source of all tax revenue, We the People, there should be only one tax to collect all tax revenue. It should be a single, simple, fair, direct, individual tax levied on living persons.

Obama intends to shut down the coal industry? He presented it as just stopping new coal-fired power plants from being built. This move will shut down the iron and steel industries and every industry that uses iron and steel.
Coal is used to make iron ore into iron the metal.
Coal is used to heat pig iron to form it.
Coal is roasted to make it into coke.
Coke is used to convert iron the metal into steel the metal.
Coal is used to form steel ingots into shapes like I-beams.
Steel is made into parts like nuts and bolts and angles, rebars, etc.
Reinforcing bars are needed for reinforced concrete.
Steel parts are made into machines such as lathes, harvesters, etc.
Shutting down coal would put us into the status from before fire was discovered.
When these industries go out of business, they will no longer pay the many taxes they now pay, nor the employees’ income taxes, nor the new taxes that put them out of business.

You
have to love your country to become a Statesman, and go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure it's best interests. AND
you have to love and respect the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and not opine the Founders created (via prayer I might add) a flawed document, especially when you will be asked to swear before God and man that you will
defend and protect..
O is none of these, he's a fraud..that's another thing, in order to become an AMERICAN
Statesman, you have to be a NATURAL born citizen
which explains at least one of the flaws he thinks is in this remarkable document that's
NOT a living breathing entity. Until and unless he reveals his true, vaulted birth certificate and his school information, by sealing them, he's admitted theres someting fishy. And by refusing to show the public these documents, his actions speak louder than words in my mind. This isn't conpiracy, tin foil hat thinking, it's common sense YOU DON'T SEAL IMPOSRTANT PAPERS unless you have something to hide. Yep, instead of a Statesman, we have a Disaster.

NOT EVEN CLOSE
His character flaws run too deep. He's a broken man - beyond repair. He does not love this country. And he lies like a rug.

Hey Sandra - lay off the Kool-Aid..you are embarrassing yourself.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

How has the Democractic Congress cut spending in the last two years? Have they even proposed any spending cuts?

America doesn't produce statesmen

America doesn't produce statesmen.

We either produce appeasers like Obama, or hawks like Bush.

Bravo!
Hard to find an article with the word "noble" in it, either literally or culturally. This work pleases--and intructs--in that respect among others.

We had in my view two unusually noble candidates running.

If a great person and citizen like McCain had to lose, it's providentially appropriate that he lose to a man of equal or greater stature, all things considered. Obama has already accomplished something that staggers the American mind or any mind.

And he remains the person of irony, of an almost Buddhist detachment--that we saw laughing at himself recently (at the dinner in NYC honoring the great Catholic governor, if memory serves--he was way before my time).

He stays within himself, a very natural and yet highly cultivated self. He's like the gifted athlete who builds on talent with great discipline and constant practice--yet has something that "cannot be taught."

In my view it's the same thing Lincoln had and Bill Clinton would have had--had he not spiralled downward into personal shame on the national stage.

To answer your question... NO.

In fact for the past 8 years democrats have been driving up spending across the board for defense, transportation, argriculture, education, healthcare, Homeland security, U.N. dues. Foreign aid.

So anyone concerned about too much spending will surely not vote for a democrat. To do otherwise would be intellecturally dishonest.

Jack David, Tx...re:Obama
You say, "yet he has something that can't be taught"...would that be openness...hanging out with people with strong character...letting people know who he is and where he's from..sticking by the policy he so much defended during the campaign. Is this the teaching that you refer to?

BO A STATESMAN?
In 2006, Barry supported the murderous Marxist, Islamist-enabling Raila Odinga. Is this a sample of "statesmanship" to come?

http://www.nysun.com/opinion/kenya-connection/69273/

BO continued to contact Odinga during the campaign in 2008.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/2008-01-08-293549462_ x.htm

Statesman-like behavior would be to repudiate and ostracize Odinga.

Barry is no statesman!

Will we get a Statesmen???
Are you kidding me! What planet are you from? Somehow; after lying, cheating and collecting Illegal campaign donations to the tune of almost one billion $$$s....more than half of it is Unstracable as to who gave that to him, now somehow he will raise above and do a 180 degree turn and become a statesmen. He got there "The Chicago Way" and there is no way he will suddenly become honest, moral and stately. We have already seen/felt the impact of such a President when we endured Bill Clinton's two terms in office. That set the country back in all areas of morality that will fast forever. This Narcissist will be no different. L.

BARRY STATESMAN? PART 2
