The U.N.: Is It Worth Fixing?

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

I spent last week — and will spend this week — at the United Nations (U.N.) headquarters in New York City, so the question about whether or not the U.N. is worth fixing is pretty timely for me. The official sessions of the 51st Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) so far have consisted of effusive recitations of each country’s success at “mainstreaming gender equality.” The side events have been typically leftist recipes for “mainstreaming gender equality.” Do you recognize a theme here? Regardless of the theme of the session, discussion centers around mainstreaming gender equality.

Of course, important resolutions are being drafted at the 51st CSW. The negotiations occurred behind closed doors during the first week with lobbyists sending language revisions and talking with delegates as they came and went. These negotiating sessions laid the groundwork for the debates that will occur this week. The negotiations of the first week and the debates of the second week are the serious business of the CSW, and they have a major impact around the world.

Having been involved in these negotiation and debate sessions in several capacities, I can tell you that any interference or invasion by conservatives brings out hostile reactions and bullying behavior. Any discussion of “fixing” the U.N. has to begin by recognizing that the left views the U.N. as their exclusive club; their playground, if you will.

As an official U.S. delegate to the United Nations twice, I have personal experience with the dynamics of interactions and responses when conservatives invade that playground. It begins with ridiculous roadblocks in getting badges to enter the building and goes all the way through to final negotiating sessions that turn vicious and vindictive when things aren’t working out as the radical left planned. The conservatives then get blamed for not being willing to compromise, thus endangering consensus.

As a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) representative for nearly a decade, I’ve seen the petty games that the left plays to elbow the conservatives aside. I’ve even seen hard-nosed efforts to get conservative groups kicked out of the U.N. Plus, I’ve seen the underhanded ways that marginal leftist groups get easily voted to NGO status and quickly moved into influential positions. In contrast, it took Concerned Women for America nearly three years to acquire its NGO status.

In spite of all that, I still think the U.N. is worth fixing.

Everybody knows the work of the U.N.’s General Assembly and the Security Council. Everybody knows about the U.N.’s so-called “peacekeeping” role, the scandals and the misbehavior, if not criminal activity, of U.N. personnel around the world. Not everybody, though, knows that the U.N. also has commissions and sessions that produce so-called “treaties” and “agreed-upon resolutions” on a wide range of topics — children’s rights, the rights of persons with disabilities, gender and women’s rights, etc. Regardless of the specific topic, these sessions inevitably boil down to efforts to establish universal abortion-on-demand under the guise of reproductive health services for women. Also, U.N. treaties inevitably have councils of accountability to assess how member-states are conforming to the treaty’s specific dictates — which, in effect, allows the U.N. to take precedence over an individual country’s national sovereignty.

Conservatives working at these conferences have successfully blocked the worst of the leftist agenda. Perhaps more importantly, conservatives expose all the ways that the U.N.’s committees of accountability abuse their role and bully nations into conformity with that leftist agenda.

Here are three top reasons why I believe we must “fix” the United Nations:

1. As the last remaining world super-power, the United States has a responsibility to be a beacon of hope to the rest of the world for human rights and religious freedom — to make life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness a reality for all the peoples of the world. The U.N.’s anti-American and leftist rhetoric and stances must be countered by pro-democracy and pro-freedom advocates.

2. The United States has a responsibility to stand with those developing nations that do not want U.N. treaties used as a means to usurp their national sovereignty. Conservatives are making inroads at the U.N. by partnering with other pro-life and pro-family groups to block left-wing domination of the accountability bodies and to expose their worst offenses.

3. The United Nations is one place where high-level representatives from member nations have an opportunity to hear unfiltered U.S. views and meet with conservative lobbyists who represent their viewpoints; it gives likeminded delegates and representatives hope and strengthens their resolve.

Conservatives at these international conferences reveal a side of America that the mainstream media never communicates to the rest of the world. Delegates and NGO representatives to the U.N. from other nations will never know and understand America unless they meet conservative counterparts.

I will never forget an African delegate coming up to me after I gave a speech at a side event at the U.N. two years ago. She was very emotional and had a hard time getting the words out –– basically, she couldn’t believe that there were Americans who held conservative views, and she was deeply moved to find a kindred spirit like me at the United Nations.

At an international event in Mexico, a man came up to me after my speech to over 4,000 Mexican government leaders and community social workers to express deep appreciation for the conservative speech I had just given. He said that as a former U.N. delegate, he had never in his wildest dreams thought that he would ever hear an American express the values and hold the views that I expressed in my speech. Two women who were with him stood with tears in their eyes as they shook their heads in agreement with his remarks.

In Kuala Lumpur and in Geneva, I’ve heard similar responses.

The United Nations is worth fixing because there are thousands of people around the world who need to know that they are not alone. At a minimum, the U.N. provides a platform where their views can be affirmed and reinforced.

I know that many of you are saying, “Those efforts are a drop in the bucket compared to the whole impact of the U.N.” Others are saying that those results are a mighty poor return on investment when put up against the total budget of the U.N. Others are pointing out that I’ve talked about a few good things happening at the U.N. and are wondering if those things make the U.N. worth saving,

I am fully confident that had a person like John Bolton been named Secretary-General of the United Nations reform would succeed. Leadership is key. If the U.N. had leaders with John Bolton’s values and courage, it could be cleaned up and become a forum where the types of experiences I have recounted could be replicated in the U.N.’s General Assembly, the Security Council and in the U.N.’s missions and agencies around the world.

That IS the point, isn't it?
The leadership of the UN is corrupt and mostly always has been. AND because the UN and many, if not most, of the officials there are corrupt - things will NOT change.

Two specific examples of good are nowhere good enough to save the place. WAY TOO MANY BAD examples put them in a perspective of too little, too late.

TIME TO GET OUT AND THROW THEM OUT OF THE USA!

To answer the title question: Yes
As long as the first step of the fix is to put the whole place on a barge, tow it to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and sink the damned barge.

Never going to happen.

Jimmy Carter

Liberals

U.N.

Pick your favorite right wing batting ball.

Something tells me the right wing is never going to get tired of smacking down any of the above.

If only my nephews were so easily amused I could've saved money on that Nintendo player. You do have to admit that politics as fun is cheap. From Live Aid, to We are the World, liberals give more money to the third world than conservatives will ever consider. Now Bill Gates has Warren's Buffet's billions.

Face it. Conservatives could give two cents and a holler about the rest of the world. Ok, probably not the two cents. Just the holler part.

ho ho ho! Somehow some thought of conservatives getting together and holding hands singing "we are the world" just tickles the funny bone.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the number of conservative NGO's applying to get into the U.N. is somewhere around Bush's poll ratings.

What bridges haven't the conservatives burnt with the U.N.? What, burned all the bridges? Heck we'll send the meanest bully around to really insure alienation.

Somehow I just don't ever see conservatives giving the U.N. the time of day, let alone respect.

A voice in the wilderness
I appreciate Crouse. Every piece on a chessboard has the potential to win the game. The mystery to me is how the UN, as portrayed to me all my life, continues to exist. There is way more to this than meets my eye.

Another Failed Experiment...
... of the Left.

Yes... on paper, the U.N. woulda, coulda, shoulda been a great instrument of peace & prosperity for the far reaches of the world. On paper, this entire idea is "perfect."

But like so many leftist Utopian dreams, the law of unintended consequences and complete ignorance of the human condition has doomed this experiment. It is past time to "move on".

NO...
No and No...BrianR is correct!

Fixing the UN
Fixing the UN is like upgrading an old, obselete computer. The best, cheapest, fastest and most effective way to fix it is to take a sledge hammer to it and buy a new one. All it is right now is a big, expensive, severely depreciated paperweight. The amount of time, effort and money that would be required in fixing it such that it would be far more cost effective to replace it. That presumes you even need it any more. Simply scrapping it altogether without bothering to replace it might even be better in the long term.

Drive By Posting, you are so typical!
Liberals, by nature cannot tell the truth. Inherently, they accuse their sworn enemies, the conservatives, of the very thing they are guilty of doing. WAKE UP Drive By, HELLOOOOO
Conservatives CARE ABOUT THE REST OF THE WORLD.
Are you asleep? Are you completely blind, and deaf? Can you read postings on TownHall?
It is conservatives that want to fight on until victory is won in Iraq. Conservatives want to stop abortion, worldwide. Conservatives want to end violence in Israel. Conservatives know that the answer to terrorism is never appeasement. Liberals support appeasement! You cannot deal with terrorists. They do not value human life. Democrats just do not get it. Terrorists will tell you anything you want to hear until they blow themselves up while hugging you!
They don't want agreements, They want you DEAD!
They will not stop until they succeed.
Why defend an insanely corrupt UN? Why defend a completely insane Jimmy Carter?
Anyone who can defend these corrupt entities and Limosine Liberals with a straight face, desperately needs psychological help.
Get help today! We do not want to see you wind up like Anna Nicole Smith, so drugged up that nobody noticed that she had pneumonia.

End US funding
And the UN folds quicker than a soggy house of cards - IF that's what we really want.

Jesus' example of breaking bread with those who needed his message most (e.g. Zaccheus) is an apt one, so I have to side with JSC on this one and applaud her efforts at working to spread a conservative message right in the midst of the liberal stronghold that is the UN. And consider this: as long as the UN HQ is in NYC they're coming to us!

Is the UN worth saving.
Maybe, but I don't think it can be done. Dr. Michael Savage has a better idea. Kick them out of New York, set up another organization of JUST liberty loving countries, Republics and Democracies. Suspend any country's membership that falls into a dictatorship. Or any other form of oppression. It is our dime that keeps the UN afloat, it should be our call.

Is the UN Worth anything?
Quote: In spite of all that, I still think the U.N. is worth fixing with 3 reasons:

Resp: Fine, we can do that through another mechanism that isn't corrupt and controlled by hundreds of left wing tin pot dictators.

Resp: If the US were to back out of the UN, the UN would likely fail and this would prevent this kind of thing. Left wing domination of UN bodies is not a reason for keeping it, its a reason for getting rid of it!

3. The United Nations is one place where high-level representatives from member nations have an opportunity to hear unfiltered U.S. views and meet with conservative lobbyists who represent their viewpoints; it gives likeminded delegates and representatives hope and strengthens their resolve.

Respon: The key here is "is one place". There are an endless number of ways to get the message to other nations.

In short all three of your reasons fall short, very short. The UN is not a relevant organization any longer. Remember that quote? We said that ignoring the previously agreed upon resolutions made the UN in danger of becoming irrelevant. That hasn't changed. The UN ignored and the UN became irrelevant.

Get rid of it.

"Fix it" like a dog is "fixed"
"I am fully confident that had a person like John Bolton been named Secretary-General of the United Nations reform would succeed. Leadership is key. The converse proposition, unfortunately, is also true. John Bolton (one of the few things GW actually got right) is out, has never been confirmed, & will never be confirmed in the foreseeable. If we can't summon the political will to send a Bolton or another Kirkpatrick to the UN, why should we fantasize any other country will?

The real underlying purpose of the United Nations is to evolve into a de jure world government, on a very socialist model. Virtually everything it does is designed to promote its elevation to this status, or at least a world socialist ethos generally. This purpose is built into the structure and design of the UN. Its assemblies and councils and agencies and treaties and declarations masquerade as government agencies and legislative bodies and statutes in order to get everyone used to the idea that it is indeed the government of the world, & one day will assume that name and authority in fact.

For most of the corrupt little socialist states and tinpot dictatorships making up the UN, the immediate reward is taking us down a peg, blaming all their self-inflicted problems on us, and demanding handouts from us as some sort of "right" the UN should in their view be able to legislate and impos on us. Our relationship with the UN is akin to Gulliver voluntarily submitting to being tied down by the Lilliputians (Defoe's intent was political satire, BTW).

It would be nice if we could rely on our leaders of any party to recognize and resist the UN's presumptions and delusions, and consistently send Boltons and Jeanne Kirkpatricks to tell them exactly who and what they are and how little that means, daily. But we know every future Demmie and spineless Republicrat POTUS will send a UN toadie. Demmies such as former Pres's Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, believe and actively promote the idea of US submission to internationalism. So long as the UN exists as it does, we are in danger of that situation being brought to pass, at which time what is left of our Constitutional protections and soveriegnty will vanish like the fabric of dreams. Therefore it needs to go.

We can have "forums" and multilateral meetings, with friends and with adversaries, without this stupid mummery of a fake international quasi-government. We can do aid, science, and culture without UN agencies mixing their ill leftists agendas into those activities. The UN is at best unnecessary and at worst a barely latent malignancy. KIck it to the curb!

GET US OUT OF THE UN
Excellent speech by Congressman Usher L. Burdick, N.D., printed in the Congressional Record of April 28, 1954 relating to United States membership in the United Nations and the dangers to U.S. Sovereignty. One excerpt follows: Who were the principal movers at San Francisco for this United Nations Charter? Who wrote the charter, and who had themost to do about shaping its provisions? The answer is that the Russian Communists and Alger Hiss, a representative of our State Department, were the prime movers and schemers in arranging its provisions. That is the same Alger Hiss who was convicted for perjury when he denied sending secret material to the Soviet Union representatives."

NO
Pack 'em up, move 'em out. Today.

I normally enjoy your articles
But today you are dead wrong. The UN uses the USA to fund it and yet not give us any credit and make us only equal partners with some other contires that dont do 1/100th of what we do.

We should drop the UN, kick them out of NY, and stop acting like world police. We can still help those in need around the world but it will be with our name attached to it so all those people know exactly where it came from.

I am also very very uneasy about the UN as I see it as a huge threat to our county in the fact that it wants to be the world government. I do not want us to be a state of them subject to their laws, culture, and values. We have our own thank you and will not be giving them up without bloodshed.

The UN needs to go period. I will vote for whoever says they will immidiatly remove us from the UN.

RE: TAP001 writes
Really.

Rush Limbaugh is willing to admit that truth. Politics is just entertainment to him. What does that say about his audience?

In 2000 Pew Research did a study of the news pring media by looking at editors and editorials produced by America's major newspapers. They most definitely verified that editors were by-and-large overwhelming liberal. They also found that more editorials where critical of Democrats than Republicans. The conclusion was that liberal editors were more frustrated with Democrats who failed to live up to Democratic standards than Republicans who lived up to democratic standards.

Now, contrast that with Rush Limbaugh. Or Laura Ingram, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity or Fox News.

Are the right wing news outlets more critical of Republicans? It's called entertainment.

Conservatives listening to Rush are not fighting. The are basking in the warm glow of self-rigtheous indignation of superiority of the home team, otherwise known as sports politics.

Well, you can look at the years 2000-2006 and see how that entertainment equating to "fighting". The Republicans were effective at what exactly?

The war in Iraq?

There is a difference between selling something and liberal bashing. You will never sell war by calling the opponent cowards. Not going to happen. Bush relied on the right wing media to sell the war for him. The right wing media tried and failed.

In some respects the war in Iraq is a good metaphor for right wing media. Ok, you destroyed the bad guy. Now what. You don't believe in nation building, including your own country. Rush Limbaugh is doesn't promote the Republican party as much as he destroys the left wing.

As a conservative I take personal responsibility. That's what separates me from the crowd of that calls itself conservative here.

Here are the relevant questions to ask.

Who let the U.N. be run roughshod by liberals.
Who let the Univeristies of this country be run roughshod by liberals.
Who let the mainstreem media be run roughshod by liberals.
Who let Hollywood be run roughshod by liberals.

I, as someone who takes responsibility, say I did. I let liberals run roughshod.

I have the humility of Christ to be humble and realize that calling the enemy f****ts is not the solution.

Because Republicans refuse to take responsibility, stand up and say they were present the entire time the last 50 years while liberals waged a culture war, I do not blame them. That's as silly as blaming the devil for being the devil. Of course the devil is going to be the devil. Jesus does not instruct us to go on the air and bash those deceived by the devil in the form of entertainment.

At this point in history, Republicans have become that which they despise. They have become the whiny victims. Crouse is whining because she is a victim of liberals playing politics as if Republicans don't play erstwhile politics given the same chance.

Rush Limbaugh et al where effective when Republicans were in the minority because minority parties in Washington have little power.

Well, guess what, the victim mentalty needs to change once one assumes power. One needs to transition from a purely defensive posture of mudslinging to an offensive position of promoting ideas.

Let's do a comparison. Let's compare how well George Bush did with selling Social Security reform with how well Al Gore is doing selling global warming.

Al Gore's idea is the *wrong* idea yet he is being effective because the liberals are supporting him.

Congress did not support the President. They didn't block him either. They just let him be a lone voice. That's not politics. That's stupidity.

Republicans are never going to sell pro-life stances by calling liberals baby killers. It is bad politics.

If Republicans feel that the U.N., Universities, public education, main stream media or what have you are huge mountains of liberal making they have to accept the responsiibility of being present the entire time this happened.

Bashing Jimmy Carter is not fighting for Republican beliefs. It's entertainment.

What Al Gore is doing is fighting for something he believes in, and he has been at it for 30 years.

The public is going to tune out Republicans on Global Warming because in the public's mind the Republicans have not championed any environmental issue in the last 30 years. Every environmental issue, right or wrong, has been opposed by the right wing IN THE PUBLIC'S mind.

If conservatives had a platform, if conservatives had a counter environmental agenda, if conservatives had a counter health care agenda, if conservatives had a counter social security agenda as Bush put forth, then America would pay attention.

What U.N. agenda does Bush have? Easy, it can be summed up as my way or the highway. Yeah that's good.

Did you know that over 2/3's of the world's population live in countries where abortion is illegal?

You wouldn't know that reading Crouse or listenign to Republicans characterize countries in the U.N.

I'm not a victim. I'm not a victim of liberal shannanigans. Liberals put a lot more boots on the ground when it comes to their beliefs and the NGO's and support of the third world. From the Sierra Club to Green Peace to PETA, everywhere the public turns they see liberal groups both good and bad. Where are the good and bad conservative counterparts? Republicans have the NRA and Americans respect that. But who else? Now that's fighting back. Boots on the ground.

Listening to right wing pundits is not fighting back. It's entertainment and cheap entertainment at that.

I was raised that the devil will win by default. The devil only loses win Christians fight back and take responsibility. Saying bad things about the devil is not it.

UN only "fixable" one way
The organisation needs to be shut-down!

Get US OUT
Ron Paul introduces legislation EVERY year to get us out of the UN. It is H.R. 1146 - The American Sovereignty Restoration Act.

http://www.thelibertycommittee.org/hr1146.htm

FIXING THE United Nitwits
RUN'EM OUT OF TOWN ON A RAIL IS THE MOST VIABLE SOLUTION AND THE MOST SENSIBLE. ASK YOURSELF DO I LIKE BENDING OVER AND TAKING IT IN THE REAR, YEAR AFTER YEAR BY THOSE WHO PLAN ON DOING IT SO LONG AS YOU LET THEM AND PAYING FOR BEING SHAFTED WHILE YOU GIVE THEM A BUILDING AND GROUNDS TO STAY. GROW UP FOLKS, THEY ARE DOMINATED BY LEFTIST AND COMMIES, THEY ARE NOT FRIENDS OF THE U.S. OR ANY OTHER REALLY DEMOCRATIC NATION AND IF YOU IGNORE THAT FOR WHATEVER REASON, YOU ARE A BIG DUMMIE, A PERFECT SUCKER, A FROG IN A POT OF COLD WATER SITTING ON THE STOVE.

I SUGGEST THAT IF WE WISH TO KEEP THEM HERE IN THIS COUNTRY, WE DRASTICALLY CHANGE THEIR PRISSY STATUS AND IMPOSE THE RULES OF LAW AND CIVILIZED MAN UPON THEM. NO FREE PARKING, YOU BREAK OUR LAWS AND YOU ARE PROSECUTE OR GO TO JAIL OR ARE DEPORTED IMMEADIATELY. AIN'T THAT THE PITS, I CALLS IT RESPECT.

AGAIN I WOULD RATHER SEE YOUR UN OVER SUBSIDIZED CROOKED ORGANIZATION OUT OF MY COUNTRY BUT THE WHINERS AND SISSIES JUST GET HYSTERICAL WHEN YOU TALK LIKE THAT. I AM DOUBLY SURE OF WHAT I SAY WHEN I SEE YOU NOW WANT TO STICK IT TO THE WORLD FOR A PHONY GLOBAL WARMING HOAX AND ARE FLAT OUT LYING ABOUT YOUR CADRE OF EXPERTISE. I REALLY THINK FIM FLAM ARTIST FITS THEM ALL A LOT BETTER AND YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE ANY TAXING POWER OR MUSCLE AT ALL, YOU TOO ARE JUST SCAMMERS, LIKE ALGORE AND HIS CRONIES.

WHY DON'T YOU MAKE IT EASY AND JUST GET YOUR USELESS BUTT OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND WE CAN REFORM A WORLDWIDE GROUP THAT REALLY CARES ABOUT FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY, NOT COMMUNISM AND TYRANNY.

Redundant
We don't need the UN. We have the democratic party to vote in socialist measures, beat up on Israel and coddle dictators. What do we need the UN for?

Outsourcing?
Isn't the UN just another example of outsourcing US jobs? We have perfectly good DOMESTIC traitors in the democrats, why do we need to give those jobs to foreign traitors? The Dems are perfectly ready to vote away our sovereignty, remove our freedoms, and otherwise crush the US, do we really need to give that job to foreign diplomats? Get rid of the UN to guarantee full employment for US leftists!

To andrews
LOL, keep on I've had my spew alert now and am about to start the beers and crowns.

There's no "US" in U.N.
Drivebyposting:

There have been numerous studies conducted that conclude that conservatives are more charitable than liberals. You can read about one such study at: http://www.beliefnet.com/story/204/story_20419_1.html. We do more than talk about what needs to be fixed. We actually try to be part of the solution.

As for the content of the article, I try to keep an open mind about the benefits of the UN, but it's hard to do that in light of the repeated smacks in the face the UN serves up to this country. We are the punching bag for too many countries already, do we have to host and contribute huge sums to an organization that is constantly taking swings at us? This article, these posts, this discussion leads me to think that Americans may be growing tired of being blamed for everything that's wrong with the world. I know I am.

The worst columnist of TownHall
This lady is like a liberal - she thinks the UN is worth saving because of a couple of warm fuzzies she's gotten over the years. The UN is beyond repair - so utterly infested with socialists, communists, dictators and kleptocrats and this naive lady thinks that people like her can fix it. Save the US money and trash it now and create something else comprised of free economy nations. There is no incentive for countries to change as things are now.

Debating Society
Even if the UN is just an international debating society, it is important to have such a platform so anyone who cares to watch can see what various countries are saying on issues. And there are times when the UN provides better entertainment than the average TV comedian with Kruschev pounding his shoe or Chavez smelling sulpher. In the past there have even been very serious debates with the future of the world hanging on the outcome like the debates leading up to the Korean war or the drama of the Cuban missile crisis with Stevenson asking the Russian delegate if the Russians had missiles in Cuba yes or no and the Russian delegate saying he was not in an American courtroom and did not have to answer yes or no.

To ProfGene
Would you be willing to pay for this?:

ProfGene
Vic beat me to it.

I was about to say subscribing to a few foreign papers is about a billion times less expensive for the US than what we pay to support the UN.

Even cheaper
Fo only a fraction of what the US pays for UN support, I will daily call up the State Dept. and give them the same information: "Most of the world hates the US and Israel."

The tab for supporting the UN seems pretty steep to find out whether we are slightly more or less despised than Israel.

To andrews
I would like to go further, take all the foreign papers and bring them to prof gene, a few moths late. Then he can see how totaly false they are before he forgets.

That the libtard real problem, they can not remember.

Vic
Cheapest of all: Just get Foggy Bottom a subscription to the New York Times. Their editorial pages (which include the supposed "news" pages) are almost identical to the UN pronouncements. Subscription is $6.20/week, so for about $320/year we could get everything we get from the UN without all the unpaid parking tickets and wasted space in Turtle Bay. Not to mention the billions we waste on UN programs.

Of course, Frenchmen would then have to pay out of pocket for sex with refugees, and Kofi Anan's family would have to find corruption in their own country, but I can live with that.

To andrews
You assume that the French wish for something rational. I would rather not comment about the last sentence, it is similar to something about the twilight zone.

the u.n.
as the old saying goes-"hold your friends close, but your enemies even closer."
