Media Stack the Deck For McCain and Obama on Culture Issues

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It’s simple. The most competent candidate who comes closest to sharing my core values and political philosophy will get my vote as president. Nobody gets a free ante in the biggest card game of all because of race, gender, religion, or POW status.

When any candidate plays one of these “trump cards,” it tells me something when the media fold rather than call them on it. Thus far, Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are getting by with a little help from their friends in the press.

The Religion Card:

When Republican Mike Huckabee appeared to make a negative comment about Mormonism to a New York Times reporter, the media pounced on the former Baptist preacher. Huckabee apologized, and rightly so.

In contrast, Obama accused Democrat Hillary Clinton’s campaign of circulating Internet rumors that he’s a Muslim, and Team Hillary took the media hit.

The Gender Card:

After getting pummeled by the boys at the Democratic debate in Philadelphia on October 30, Clinton went in for the spa treatment at her alma mater, Wellesley College. She proclaimed “this all-women’s college prepared me to compete in the all-boys club of presidential politics.”

CNN reporter Campbell Brown asked Hillary if she is using the gender card. She said “I’m not exploiting anything at all” and “I’m not using the gender card.” Clinton then quipped: “People aren’t attacking me because I’m a woman, they’re attacking me because I’m ahead.” Not a minute passed before she said: “I am thrilled to be running to be the first woman president ever.”

When Hillary (“I am woman, hear me roar or cry, depending on pre-primary polling”) got called for playing the gender/victim card, she bluffed by saying her opponents weren’t picking on her because she’s a woman, it’s because she’s the “leader” trying to crack the great “glass ceiling” on Pennsylvania Avenue.

I forget. Which leader coined that one, Lincoln or FDR?

Even the consummate critic of all things conservative at The New York Times, columnist Maureen Dowd, undercut Clinton’s claim. Dowd says Clinton, “can break, just like a little girl. ... If she could become a senator by playing the victim after Monica, surely she can become president by playing the victim now.”  Maureen likes Obama, in case you couldn’t tell.

The Race Card:

LA Times reporter David Wright’s question got a revealing response from Bill Clinton:

Wright: What does it say about Barack Obama that it takes two of you to beat him?

Clinton: [Laughs] That’s just bait, too. Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice, in ‘84 and ‘88. And he ran a good campaign, and Senator Obama’s run a good campaign here. He’s run a good campaign everywhere, he’s got a, he is a good candidate, with a good organization.

Bill really got pummeled for that one.  How bad is it when your media buddies provide a platform for your Democrat pal Al Sharpton, race-card player extraordinaire, to slap you around for playing the “race card?” According to The New York Daily News:

“The Rev. Al Sharpton Monday joined the chorus of Democrats telling Bill Clinton to zip it. ‘As one of the most outspoken people in America, I think there’s a time to shut up. That time has come,’ Sharpton said. He said the former President’s series of controversial statements about Barack Obama in last week’s bitterly fought South Carolina Democratic primary ended up hurting Clinton, his wife and the party.”

Sharpton’s own Web site confirms his smack at Clinton:

Rev. Al Sharpton on the ABC show The View today told former President Bill Clinton to "shut up". While not identifying any individual statements, Sharpton said Mr. Clinton should end the "race-tinged rhetoric".  Many Democrats are reported to be upset with Mr. Clinton's comparison of Barack Obama's South Carolina victory to those of Rev. Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988, in an effort to explain his wife's Saturday South Carolina loss.

And who knew Ted Kennedy’s moral compass could go askew? Right after Clinton’s comment, Kennedy announced his endorsement of Obama: "With Barack Obama we will close the book on the old politics of race against race, gender against gender, ethnic group against ethnic group, and straight against gay.”

I guess this means Ted will have to shut up too. Chalk it up to the politics of change.

The question remains. Since people of good will recoil at the race card, why are media, including conservatives, allowing Obama to use it as a sword and a shield?

When Obama campaigned with Oprah Winfrey in South Carolina, there was no mention of the white side of his family. Like Dorothy said to Toto, “I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

The Los Angeles Times took note that Obama talked about his white mother and white grandparents to a virtually white audience in Kansas where he was introduced by the white governor, Kathleen Sebelius, but the Times, which has endorsed Obama, didn’t mention the “race card”:

The candidate is not in South Carolina anymore, where African Americans helped him to victory in the primary on Saturday. When he talks inclusiveness in El Do-RAY-do (population 12,000, 94 percent white), he means something just a little bit different.

“Barack Obama has Midwestern values, values that we know about,” Sebelius said. “He got them from his grandparents and from his mom,” the Kansas branch of Obama’s multiracial family. (His mother was white; his father was a black Kenyan.)

I guess they were just playing the inoffensive geographic card.

The POW Card:

John McCain palms his POW card often and at the most irrelevant times, such as the Republican debate at the Reagan Library last week. Janet Hook of The Los Angeles Times asked McCain the following question about the economy:

Hook: “There's been a lot of discussion lately about the importance of leadership and management experience. What makes you more qualified than Mitt Romney, a successful CEO and businessman, to manage our economy?”

McCain: “Because I know how to lead. I know how to lead. I led the largest squadron in the United States Navy. And I did it out of patriotism, not for profit. And I can hire lots of managers, but leadership is a quality that people look for. And I have the vision and the knowledge and the background to take on the transcendent issue of the 21st century, which is radical Islamic extremism. I've been involved in every single major national security crisis since -- in the last 20 years. I'm proud to have played a role in those, and I'm proud to have played a role in making sure that we didn't raise the white flag and surrender in Iraq, as the Democrats wanted us to do and we would have done if we had set timetables for a withdrawal. So, the fact is -- so the fact is that I have the qualifications and the knowledge and the background and the judgment. I don't need any on-the-job training. I had the great honor of serving this country in uniform for 22 years. I had the great honor of being inspired while I was in the prison camps of North Vietnam by the news of a governor and his wife who cared very much about those of us who were in captivity.

And when I came home, I was inspired by him, and I voted for him, and I supported him, and I was proud to be a leader in the Reagan revolution -- I mean, a foot soldier in the Reagan revolution, as we fought these wars together with unshakable courage and principle. And I'm prepared to follow in his tradition and in his footsteps.

Hook checked and passed to Mitt Romney.

Most of us get it, and we don’t think it’s worth a plugged presidential nickel. Hillary’s a woman. Barack’s black and white. Mike’s a former Baptist preacher. Mitt’s a Mormon. John’s a war hero and former POW. Kudos to all, and get over it.

And thanks to Ron Paul for not playing your gynecology card.

Nonsense: Mitt stacked the Deck
Against him self by lying about his own record and the record of his opponents.

http://www.stephenbainbridge.com/punditry/comments/judging_ a_man_by_his_enemies/

If Mitt wants to know who is to blame for his losing, he should look in the mirror.

Joe
Please, would you stop? You are a shill, possibly paid, for the McCain/Huckabee ticket. It is getting very annoying to read the same tripe from you every day on every article. Go do this elswhere, please.

unconvincing
What a curious collection of anecdotes. There has been some attempts in the media to point out that the "Obama is a muslim" e-mails are nonsense. But I haven't seen any attempts to link them to Clinton. The Clinton camp did get critical attention for a number of comments that seemed to be attempts to divide the electorate by race, the Jackson comment being the last of them. But I am not sure why this should be a problem for Obama.

Nor does it seem likely that crowds that are looking at Obama can miss that he is black.

And Maureen Dowd has been pilloring the Clintons since the '90s. To suggest that there is something significant about the fact that she would do so now suggests either ignorance or dishonesty.

"John's a war hero..." "get over it"
He served his country by wearing the uniform. He has been honored for his service and has continued to serve his country as a U.S. Senator. His service has made him ready and the time is now for his fellow citizens to give him the nomination he deserves and has earned. The Presidency is not his birthright, but he was born for such a time as this.

Some questions:

Am I talking about John McCain in 2008 or John Kerry in 2004?

And is there any difference?

And isn't the outcome likely to be identical?

hmmmm...

What war hero?
What leadership? He led the largest squadron... and got blown out of the sky, and spent the next few years following the orders of the enemy.

McCain is so opposed to us using the torture and brutality tactics of our enemies... hm... what was his position on normalizing relations with the same barbarians that tortured him for years? It's one thing not to want to be like our enemies who torture and brutalize prisoners and their own population, but a different thing to want to do business with them?

McCain told his 'foot soldiers' to throw their support behind Huckleberry in WV. This denies votes to Romney that McCain can't get... "tag-team" politics, indeed.

We're being sandbagged; the establishment is trying to push McCain on the premise that he's the only one who can beat Hillary... pretending that Obama isn't going to win the Democrat nomination. But it's starting to look like he might... Obama supporters might have chosen McCain instead of Hillary, but do you really think Hillary supporters will chose McCain over Obama?

Start thinking "President Obama".

Correction: denies delegates
"This denies votes to Romney that McCain can't get..."

Should read, "This denies DELEGATES to Romney that McCain can't get..."

Funny...
Last I checked, a comment about mormonism has to be posed in the form of a statement. Huckabee, after admitting he was ignorant of Mormonism's doctrines, asked a question related to a common misconception.

Best not be askin' any questions if you want to run for President! God forbid you don't know everything already.

Stacked Deck
It is true that the media are trying to coronate McCain.

However-

Don't Coronate McCain just yet. From here on there is only one open primary and that is TX and it is an open primary/caucus. There are 988 delegates to go with 19 closed primaries and 6 caucuses.

Further, only MS and LA are Southern which is bad news for Huck. Romney is strong in TX due to immigration.

The McCain opposition has some time to really open up on him now.

Romney would be dumber than a fence post to pull out now. At the very worst he can run this into a brokered convention.

The Lunatics
Have taken over the asylum. Case in point has anyone ever really paid attention to how children, specifically five year olds, try to manipulate their parents? Contemplate if you will what happens when a five year old throws a temper tantrum (examples Terrorist Murdering civilians in a cafe.....rowdy individuals deliberately taking public forums hostage not too unlike the brat throwing the fit....collectives of "victims" crying for attention and to be fed at the public teet...the race, gender, religion and sexual baters ALL)...now envision a set of parents that whenever the five year old cries, throws a fit or takes a dinner party hostage, the parents give in to the child...The parent then out of concern for the child continuing to be disruptive or THROW THE FIT i.e. continue terrorist attacks or taking public forums hostage....begins to simply give in to the child, without regard to anything but being the pacifier (pacifist) and keeping the PEACE which in reality the child took hostage and disrupted...Now step into the modern world of American social life and take a good hard look. EXACTLY the same thing is/has been happening.....and these so-called politician, phony leaders are doing nothing but pandering to that segment of our society each (regardless of party affiliation) trying to bribe, and play to the brat attacks of what ever faction they think will back them the most....THAT more than anything else "spoiled bratism" and perpetual pandering to it is the primary reason the rest of the world holds this country in such contempt. Not only is it pathetic, it is immature and completely lacking in priciple or anything that even remotely resembles common sense. A vote for any of these baffoons is a vote to continue letting the brats run the country and ultimately the world and each candidate is literally telling all who listent and pay attention exactly what and how they will allow this to happen...THAT is NOT leadership.

LOOSING THEIR MINDS!!
Wow to watch things unfold is amazing. The talking heads, pundits are loosing their mind. What if Senator Obama pulls it off. What if the White Americans vote for him. What if the Black Americans vote for him. Well we know that the Hispanics will vote for Hillary.
You people are so selfish, there is so much double standards being played in this election.

To predict that all Whites will vote for Hillary is an understatement, which we hear daily. White people brought the race card into the process once he won Iowa.

The rest of the world is excited about Senator Obama, but they know what we will get with the Clintons.
Yes, this will be historic, the first Women President, with an ex-President husband who is a disbarred lawyer.
ONLY IN AMERICA!!

This Has Been
A Media Event from the very start and, it continues today.
Yesterday, a McCain spokesman was on and talked openly about the 'deal' in WVA...but this morning Live on FoxNews the Huckabee gets on and denies there was any deal. How this guy can look into the camera and LIE without batting an eye is troubling BUT it's more troubling that there was no follow-up to ask the preacher(??) about the McCain campaigns assertion that indeed there WAS A Backroom Deal!!

No More Lies
No Charlatons
No AmeXicans
...OR...
No TalkRadio
No Political Internet
No Real Security/Sovereignty
No More America.

So which is it going to be people?

W/O=

And you wonder why
so many of us are gonna sit it out?

We get the government we deserve.

It's Time to Vet the Veteran
Agree with Buck's comments above.

It's time for the media to explore McCain's biography in depth. His career shows him to be a risk taker, a reckless officer and self-indulgent man.

His imprisonment, ultimately, was not heroic but tragic, which left him with a broken body and tortured mind. Check out the web about his possible PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). The media should demand that his medical records be released.

All of us honor his service during the Vietnam War including his terrible suffering while imprisoned, but he should be completely vetted before being promoted to CIC.

STOP WHINING.......
.....about the media. These guys all have records which can be easily looked up provided you get up off your duff.Vote with your head up and your eyes open. The 3 major cantidates all suck and the thought of a McCain/Huckabee ticket makes me gag. There's plenty of time to organize a conservative 3rd party cantidacy. I'm writing in Ron Paul no matter what happens. If it destroys the party in 2008,so what. If McCain's the best we can do, maybe the party needs to be destroyed. Besides, after 2 years of Obama/Hilary, the 2010 congressional races should see the beginning of a nice resurrection.

Can't Help But
Notice the Many Arguments on the threads of -

"A Vote for Candidate A is actually a Vote for Candidate B or C."

The only part of the argument that matters is -

A Vote For McCain is Two Votes for a Liberal Agenda.
I Want My Rights Returned, Not More Taken Away!

No More
No Lies
No Amexicans
No John McCain

Close Gitmo
AND Move the Detainees to the Mainland US which by Law gives them Constitutional Protections.

How does that Equate with being the Candidate who is "Strong on National Defense"?

I sure Wish McCain & Huckabee would answer THAT question!
I wish someone would ask them the question!!!

We already know through Angry John's Own Admission that he knows NOTHING about the ECONOMY but Honestly...isn't he aware of the US Laws that Would Apply To Terrorists IF Gitmo Is Closed??!!

No More BS
No McCain/Huckabee
No MSM Manipulation

Nonsense: Mitt stacked the Deck
---
The only thing you can do is to lie, so you would never consider anyone honest.

I feel sorry for a person who carries smears on their sleeves.

When you do it once, I think you just don't know.

When you are called in you slight. and refuse the facts.

Then I know you are no Conservative, or Republican. It's the agenda, not integrity, it's win at all cost, not a patriotic spirit, to allow the most capable and hones person to lead our nation. No, you support the ones that are corrupt like you.

Seems pretty straightforward to me...
Huck might have helped hurt Mitt yesterday, but by not bowing out last night, he isn't helping McCain anymore either.
Both he and Juan McCain are openly, blatently guilty of looking into the camera and playing word games to slime Mitt.
The idea that Romney was for timetables or that he slimed Bob Dole's military record are flat lies, easily verified by anyone who cares to listen to the statements in question for themselves.
It doesn't matter what kind of military man JM was- almost FOUR DECADES AGO, what he has been since he got back is shrill, shady, self- important and, most significantly, steadily moving ever leftward.
His lifetime conservative rating is 83%.
So what.
Last year it was only 66%, and in the last 7 years it has only gone down.
Considering that the dems are most certainly going to have a split vote in the general, it seems to me that Mitt would be far better served ( America as well) by staying in.
A 4-way vote tells me it's still anyone's game, remember that Bill Clinton was POTUS.

Huckabee, McAmnesty destroying GOP
Huckabee is auditioning for VP by draining votes from Romney. McAmnesty will reward him for his service.

Will having a social, religious conservative as Veep balance the ticket? Not really, because McAmnesty disdains social conservatives. Huckabee won't have any traction in the McAmnesty Administration, except to be a lap dog.

McAmnesty has betrayed the party again and again, so let's nominate him!

Cards
The only cards I will vote for are those of VERY limited federal government, taxes, and those that promote the values actually written in the Constitution. I don't care who the candadate is, the gender, race, or religion of the candidate is not an issue.

Adherence to basic values that made this nation great is all I am interested in. I am not interested in promoting welfare, abortion, gay rights, higher taxes, or punishing achievers. Those did not make this nation great.

I am interested in a strong military and required universal MILITARY SERVICE by males, in people being in control of their personal finances and keeping the government out of their pocket books, in local control of schools and the use of paddles there, in being able to pray in schools or anywhere else for that matter, in being able to fly the flag anywhere, and in requiring anyone on governmant assistence to work and in keeping our borders closed to everyone except those we choose to let in.

Yeah. I know. I'm old fashioned. So sue me.

King Liberal
Patraeus is currently serving his country and not running for president. Hillary pretty much treated him with the respect of a pile of dog doo. No one is disrespecting McCains service to our country but to suggest that his past experiences qualify him in the here and now, well time and war has changed over the past 40 years. Sorry, I don't see it as a flip-flop.

Respectfully stated

King Liberal
What a crock, as usual a lie from the left. What Republicans, and not a few Democrats, were angry about was calling the general a traitor. I guess hurling insults and libels is what passes for reasoned discussion on your side.

''Whatever you think of Ron Paul''
--

"...you have to admit that the media are notoriously biased against him. The Fox News Channel unfairly excluded him from its January 6th debate, while MSNBC and CNN tried to keep him from speaking for any significant length of time during their January 24th and January 30th debates. This is a candidate, we must recall, who placed second in the Republican Nevada caucuses on January 19th, beating John McCain."

From Cliff Kincaid (of Family Security Matters), February 4th. For the full article, see:

http://www.familysecuritymatters.org/terrorism.php?id=13864 76

Now, given that the media are so bloody "Liberal" in their bigotries that the chattering chimps of the MSM literally can't perceive their bias, doesn't their hatred of Ron Paul --

-- and their avid endorsement of John McCain --

...tell you all you need to know about which candidate best represents the conservative political philosophy in this elaborate kabuki theater ritual of supposed choice?

Given that John McCain is the wrong candidate for conservatives, whether he gets elected or (almost inevitably) "does a Dole" and goes down like a Subic Bay hooker, what the hell do you gain by supporting him?

By the way, that "largest squadron in the United States Navy" was an A-7 training unit that never left the United States. McCain has never commanded in combat, the way his father and his grandfather had.

The reason he got out and went into politics (after marrying into money) was that his career in the Navy had dead-ended.

nnaw...honey
The media protect a lying liberal like mcjuan..!
They do it 8 days a week! The n. y. times is just waiting for mcjuan to get nominated..then unleash anice juicy adultry story on ..the war hero!

that illegal immigration was their no. 1 concern
so what do they do ? Vote for the amnesty kid!
Another stupid point- mcjuan is very weak on the borders..everyone knows that if they are honest! So mc juan is portrayed as the master of national security..i guess the voters dont hiNk the borders apply to national security..and mc juan included! I guess these idiots think the terrorists are going to rent a good year blimp
so we can shoot them out of the sky! duh!
Then juan can say..see iam for the surge...what!?!? ROMNEY HAS NEVER SAID
True liberal: romney has never said that- politically..the surge is solving that challenge
in Iraq! PLus iam not sure romney would be leading no matter what he did or said...because
the moment he said he was going after..the pork barrel entitlements, and take washington d. c.
apart and put it back together again..you can bet your life both sides of the aisles..thought
"this guy we cant have...after all we may want to give ourselves another $60,000 dollar raise again..and this guy will fight it!"Mitt is very financially frugal...i know a lot about his personal life. But of course congress is a challenge...but mitt would take it public..if president! He would attack the deficit! But d.c. doesnt want that..and they dont want mitt! elvis

Obama not an Islamist?
Obama sez he is not an Islamist. But his christian preacher mentor in Chicago is a person enthralled by Louis Farakan (sp), who teaches his flock about "white devils". Islamic terrorists brag they have thousands of terrorist sleeper cels in this country ready to spring up to cause us plenty of trouble when the word is given.

One thing that is the most thought provoking is that the Koran states a good Islamist can lie to infidels (everybody who is not Islamist) with Allah's blessing.

That means Obama could be carrying a lot of baggage the American people need to know about. Being assured by the media that he is not an Islamist is hardly reassuring. The New York Times, Washington Post and Look Magazine assured
Americans decades ago that Castro wasn't a communist. With that information breakdown we helped kill hundreds of Cubans and helped enslave many thousands more.

If Obama is not Islamic...
--
...how come he always parks his car facing east?

Where there's smoke, y'know....
