Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Frustrated by Tom Coburn's "unprecedented obstructionism," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid cobbled together a "Tomnibus" of 35 bills with "broad -- virtually unanimous -- bipartisan support" that Coburn had blocked. On Monday, the Oklahoma Republican blocked them again.

Unable to muster the 60 votes needed to overcome Coburn's opposition, Reid castigated the Republicans who had sided with the obstreperous obstetrician. "You go home and explain to the next person you see in a wheelchair, 'I voted against you because Harry Reid was being a tyrannical guy in the Senate,'" the Nevada Democrat said. He also accused the Republicans of voting against victims of stroke, Lou Gehrig's disease, postpartum depression and child pornography.

"I have never been a bully," Reid insisted while caricaturing his opponents as cripple kickers, mother haters and molester lovers. Perhaps he really believes that, just as he really believes he is anything but "a tyrannical guy." Spending other people's money on good causes makes you automatically virtuous, which is part of its appeal. If nothing else, Coburn has shown it is possible to resist the tyranny of good intentions.

"Mr. Coburn's approach is problematic when it comes to the mechanics of the Senate," The New York Times explains, "because most of the chamber's work gets done by what is known as unanimous consent, an agreement among all parties to let a bill pass without a fight." In other words, Coburn has the bad manners to demand that the "world's greatest deliberative body" deliberate.

It's not hard to see why Reid wants to avoid that. Although he dubbed his spending package the Advancing America's Priorities Act, the one thing it emphatically does not do is set priorities.

Is postpartum depression a bad thing? Sure it is. Then let's pass a law that "aims to eradicate the devastating effects of postpartum depression on American families." And let's call it the MOTHERS Act, even though MOTHERS is not, strictly speaking, the correct acronym for Mom's Opportunity to Access Health, Education, Research, and Support for Postpartum Depression.

Are flowers nice? Of course they are. So let's pay for a new greenhouse at the Smithsonian to house its orchid collection.

Are museums edifying? You bet. So let's sponsor a traveling exhibit commemorating the War of 1812 and "The Star Spangled Banner." While we're at it, let's make a donation to the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. Speaking of edification and other countries, why not create a foundation to encourage study abroad?

According to the Congressional Budget Office, Reid's wish list will cost about $10 billion over five years, at a time when the federal budget deficit has ballooned to a record $490 billion. Yet Reid marvels that "the rogue far right has perfected the art of stopping good bills that help good people." Good bills that help good people: Could there possibly be a better governing philosophy?

I myself am partial to the notion, promoted by such rogue right-wingers as James Madison, that the federal government may exercise only those powers explicitly enumerated in the Constitution, which do not include subsidizing medical research, museums or foreign travel for college students. As Madison pointed out, if Article I's General Welfare Clause is interpreted as blanket permission to spend money on good things, much of the rest of the Constitution is superfluous.

Coburn, known as the Dr. No of the Senate, does not go that far. Unlike Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), the Dr. No of the House, Coburn generally does not oppose spending on constitutional grounds. But he does ask his colleagues to pay for new programs by cutting old ones instead of spending money they do not have. In a letter to Reid, he identified $45 billion in cuts that could be used to offset the cost of Advancing America's Priorities.

Reid did not respond. When you're spending other people's money, especially when you're borrowing against the earnings of people who are not yet born, there's no need to set priorities.

Constitutionalist obstetricians
Is there something about the lifetime experience of delivering babies that has given the obstetricians in Congress a better undestanding of Constitutional principles than can be found among all the other legislative, executive and judicial careerists in Washington put together?

Two real Americans
Who obey the law

"Coburn, known as the Dr. No of the Senate, does not go that far. Unlike Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), the Dr. No of the House, Coburn generally does not oppose spending on constitutional grounds. It is not legal to spend money as has been being done by an out of control Federal Government.

We need to take back the power over our economy away from the private banking cartel it has been unlawfully handed to.

Without the Federal Reserve banking System of fiat money, there would be no Harry Reids or Nancy's spending the future of unborn American, and heaping greater and greater bondage of debt on us today

OK, YOU GUYS IN NEVADA
It's time for you to tell YOUR representative to cool his jets.

Remind him that he's pledged to follow OUR Constitution, not the one written for the North Pole by Santa Claus.

Thank you Coburn and Paul...
If only we could clone you both and make about 500 copies.

A century and a half too late
"I myself am partial to the notion, promoted by such rogue right-wingers as James Madison, that the federal government may exercise only those powers explicitly enumerated in the Constitution"

A Great Idea -- and one that was killed 150 years ago. Its gravesite may be seen at Appomattox, VA, about a half hour from my home. R.I.P.

God Bless
Tom Coburn.
He's the example of the citizen legislator the
Founders envisioned.
I'm so sick and tired of these DemonRat thugs
running roughshod over the Constitution.
Baby Blues, yeah they are real, just about every woman experiences the blues to a degree and some are way over the top. There are already treatments for that, as DR Coburn the
obstetrician knows, and knows way more than
that weasel Reid.
The DemonRATS must really believe the taxpaying
public have private printing presses in their
basements and whenever they push a vote buying bill, they figure we will all go down there
and fire up the presses. They are elected
tyrants.

Trade Lawyers for Obstetricians
If we could get rid of all the lawyers in our house and senate and replace them with real working people such as Dr. Coburn, we would be much better off.

Who would you rather have....
in a foxhole with you under fire? Ried or Coburn?

It is perplexing how the Dims are of virtually one voice in opposing the war, spending money, opposition to English as the official language, ad nauseum. On reflection, there is an explanation! They want votes and the power that brings.

Republicans want power and votes, too. Just seems that when they get the power they don't know what to do with it, or how! I say they are like the dog that chases the dump truck. When he catches it he doesn't know what to do with it.

Think for a moment what Zerobamb and the Reid/Pelosi cartel will do given the chance! Even worse, think of the Supreme Court loaded by Zerobama. That ranks just below Islamic world domination as the most dangerous thing that could happen to America. Hillary as an associate Justice? Barf city!

Take a few moments
and send a thank you to Dr. Coburn. His web site can be found at lauraingraham.com. Let him know how you feel about this. Also, send your opinions to your own senators, MINE listen to me, ;-} I've got Obama and Durbin, but I write them frequently. The price of a vote has got to equal what they don't spend, not what they do spend.

Good piece
When we do things for the good of others it usually costs others a lot. congress definitely seems to have its priorities mixed up. congress isn't the gift giver. we are definitely headed into the socialistic category if congress doesn't stop its good will giving.

While they're at it ...
... i.e., spending, why not provide federal funding for sandals for gay ex-nuns with a foot fetish?

Feel Good Legislation
I'm sure there is something in his package that I wouldn't mind seeing done. But free tours for college students? I'd be tempted to sign up for some college courses again myself so I could apply for the tours. I'm sure everyone else would also.

It sounds as if there is a reason for this package - it is election year. Something for everyone if you will just reelect all the Democrats.

Unfortunately, I can't pay for everything. As once said, "A billion here and a billion there and soon you're talking about real money."

Reid and Obstructionism
Reid is a demagogue like all Demoncats. The best place for the Senator (and his cronies) is in retirement somewhere on a deserted island, far, far away. Senator, stop pissing away our money, go home, quit.

Before you leave, lets get really needed legislation to open ANWR and offshore areas for exploration, drilling and production. I don't care if it takes a few years, lets start now and not purchase any wog* oil in 10 years! *Not seeking to be politically correct or "tolerant".

Hey now
The Republicrats were nearly as bad while they held the reins. We cannot rail against only the Dems; most of the GOP congress-critters are just as guilty. Why does the leadership never listen to the fiscal hawks? Why do they continue to love pork? They are only interested in preserving their personal stature and power. If it helps the country, great, but that is not the goal. Most doctors stay away from politics because we are trained to be truthful and avoid evasive answers. That is why so few go into it or are successful. Nobody wants the truth- they want fairy tales.

Here's My Take On It...
Let's give money to the manure industry and call it "The Growing America's Future" bill.

Once the Iraq war is over, those funds will just go down the black hole of big government entitlement programs and frivolous earmarks.

This has to do with energy!
The Democrats are unwilling to discuss domestic oil production. They only want to discuss alternative energy. The Republicans have vowed to tie up Congress until the Democrats start talking about domestic drilling. It's was on Fox and CNN last week.

Pitchforks & Torches
"...borrowing against the earnings of people who are not yet born..."

My children are not old enough to vote, yet by obligating them to pay for social programs without their consent...sounds like "Taxation without representation."

I'd say a storm is coming. Soon.

Dr. Coburn
I am pleased to say he is one of my senators. We could certainly stand to have a lot more folks like him in the halls of Congress. I think the same can be said of Sen. Inhofe, my other senator.

Republicans vote against women and babie
will be the title of MSM. How can we get a roar going to stop the spending? The phrase borrowing against the earnings of people not yet born is a good one. We need to make it a conservative talking point and use it whenever possible. Perhaps it will eke into the consciousness of the drones who buy into the repetitive phrases of CNN (and democrat talking points.)

List
I would like to see a published list of how much money is spent on all this garbage. Bet it would take up a whole newspaper (ours is getting particularly thin since readership is down due to the outrageous liberal lean it takes). And it would be nice to see a list of our own senators, representatives and how they vote on the particular issues. THAT never gets published. The whitewash version does.

THANK YOU, SENATOR COBURN!!!
How I wish I could feel that either of the Massachusetts senators felt the least bit like you! They are both into $$$$$ ANY WAY ANY TIME ALL THE TIME!

I admire you tremendously! Keep up the good work!

Wayne OK
I was planning to add just what you said earlier! We need to remove all lawyers from Congress - and put real working people in office who know what life is really all about!

It's not too late!
Coburn/Kasich '08

The right type of man, Coburn
Tom Coburn is a fine example for the entire U.S. Senate. He's his own man, he won't be led by the nose. There are other Senators from both sides of the aisle who could perform like Coburn. But, many won't buck Harry Reid.
I think the trouble is, most Senators have law backgrounds, which makes them susceptible to making deals. Coburn came from medical practice which enables him to make clear decisions by himself. He isn't concerned with interference from Senate leader Reid, a political hack. Coburn doesn't need to make political deals to introduce legislation. Mr. Coburn knows the difference between the people's needs and political infighting.

Yep
Ron,(#8) I can see the thunderheads rising.

Cape Conservative Surely you jest, those two
pustules, becoming honest men.

Aside, I sure miss the Cape, spent many happy
hours down there til I married my sailor and moved west. Grew up in Bristol County, Dad
did some work on the Canal, many a Friday night was spent on the Canal fishing.

Thank you Dr. No!
Sen. Coburn is oing a good job and saving us money. Carry on Dr. NO!

Reid's claim never to have been
a bully sounds a lot like a hypothetical claim by Martin Webster of never having been a racist.

(edit: Webster was the founder of UK's National Front, which transmogrified eventually to British National Party; he had actually made the comment, "we don't ADMIT to being racist, we PROCLAIM it" to media)

Dr. Tom Coburn: Breast cancer action
Dr. Tom Coburn might be first commended for previously blocking in the U.S. Senate the advocacy-shaped “Priority #3: Enactment of the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (S.757 / H.R.2231),” of August 30, 2008, and cosponsored by the today’s Senate Majority Leader. Web: http://medicaljobs.com/healthcare-jobs/f38/arne-n-gjorgov- u-s-senate-35022.html .
Although “no cause of the disease has been determined,” as mentioned, the research strategy of the failed Act for protection against breast cancer could officially be (mis)directed towards the already discarded links of toxins and chemicals in the living / working environment of women along with other spurious risk factors to the breast cancer epidemic, which deviation in the research time and funds could add to the escalation of the extent of the current breast cancer contingency rather than to help its solution and elimination.

As a medical professional with experience in both the field of women’s ill health (breast cancer) and the source of life (babies), Sen. Tom Coburn, MD, is in an extraordinary position to observe, witness and act about the devastating and carcinogenic effects of the misconceived, deadly, and mass CONDOMIZATION of women’s sexuality in the mainstream population(s), resulting in (documented) both current breast cancer epidemic in American wives / mothers and rampant anorexia-bulimia disorders in daughters, and in the (observed) widespread osteoporosis impairments in mature women / grandmas. The unique contribution of Sen. Tom Coburn is anticipated in elimination (‘eradication’) of the current, excess breast cancer epidemic to the levels of sporadic cases of the disease(s) in the community.
