Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In the 1960’s, General Motors held more than 60 percent of the United States market share in cars.  This past week, the American taxpayers, (via the U.S. Treasury), became the majority owner (60 percent) of the Vehicle Acquisition Company, soon to be renamed the General Motors Company.  “By the end of the year, the government will have poured $50 billion of taxpayer money into the automaker,” according to the New York Times article (July 10) that bore the headline: “With Sale of Good Assets, G.M. Out of Bankruptcy.” The plan calls for GM maintaining a market share of 15 percent to 17 percent.

This is just the latest in a string of activities that, little by little, is immunizing the American public to accept government intervention, despite our historic tradition rejecting it.  It’s the culmination of the idea that this is the way it has to be because the company is too big to fail. The overall assumption is that the government will make sure that the taxpayers will be taken care of.

America’s history is one of personal responsibility, entrepreneurship and innovation, risk-taking and hard work.

Government – “more, bigger, better” might be the new slogan.

The current budget, which President Obama has touted as halving the deficit over time, does so only because it first triples it.  The current budget plan has the debt increasing from a total of $10 trillion last year to more than $16 trillion in 2012.

This spending of our money continues.  According to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report regarding TARP money, “As of June 30, 2009, … Treasury has approximately $328 billion remaining under the almost $700 billion limit.”  The result is that the Congress is now arguing how to best allocate that remaining money.

The Associated Press recently reported that “American International Group Inc. is consulting with the federal government about its plans to pay millions of dollars in retention incentives and bonuses.”  The credit facility for the company – another company labeled too big to fail -- has increased from $85 billion last September to $182.5 billion today.  “Too big to fail” has turned into “too big to manage without government approval.”

Another recent government encroachment is a tax increase masquerading as an environmental solution.  According to the Wall Street Journal, (“The Cap and Tax Fiction”, June 26), the Waxman-Markey bill represents “the biggest tax in American history.”  What better way to get a tax passed than to say it’s good for Mother Nature.

While the Obama administration is persistently moving the country leftward through policies, Gallup has recently reported that, “Americans, by a 2-to-1 margin, say their political views in recent years have become more conservative… all three major partisan groups indicate that their views have shifted to the right.”

So, while the country is moving to the right, the administration is moving in the opposite direction. The Gallup report concludes that, “for those seeking to understand why the Republican Party suffered such major election losses, they may find that political ideology has very little to do with it.”

What does it have to do with then?

President Obama, the Democratic leader, has stayed on target, continued along his path and acted consistently even-keeled and professional – sure of his positions and policies.  While often at odds with facts and reality – he is surely sure that his reality is real.

On the opposite side, the Republican Party has been distracted by media fashioned internal fighting, (Conservative Radio Host Rush Limbaugh, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, and former Speaker Newt Gingrich), made-for-TV soap-opera personal revelations, (Senator John Ensign of Nevada, Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina), and Governor Sarah Palin’s fireworks-creating resignation announcement on July 3rd.

Possibly, leading the country isn’t as much about dealing in reality, as it is about having the conviction that how you represent your version of reality is what actually matters.

What’s at risk?  That the nation too will become immune to reality, and believe that more, bigger better government is the answer to all problems.

“Passive immunity lasts only for a few weeks or months,” notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web site, “only active immunity is long-lasting.”  Let’s hope that, in seeking to recover from the economic malaise that is infecting the nation, this administration’s current transfer of antibodies against reality is passive, not active and will soon be over.

In the meantime, we might want to ponder: Just as style is much more about how clothes are worn than it is about the clothes themselves,  – maybe we should realize that good governance is not only about policies, but also about how, and by whom the policies are communicated.

The GM line of cars of the 1960’s was expansive and represented the dreams of many Americans turning into reality.  Let’s hope that when reality dawns, that the GM car sitting in our nation’s carport today is not a lemon but sparkles in the sun, and performs on the road.

Ms. Cushman, I couldn't agree with......
you more. Good people must keep on fighting to save liberty and capitalism, the Constitution, and US sovereignty, US financial health and US laws, US citizens and the principles on which we stand.

Charles Krauthammer commented awhile ago that the new prez has established a motto to cover his agenda......the New Foundation.

That's pretty scary. It sounds to me as if he wishes to replace those principles, laws, and Constitution on which we stand.......and he's made a good start.

Although keeping abreast of the governmental "changes" that occur every single day at warp speed takes time and energy, every phone call, email, visit, fax, or twitter that is made on behalf of our freedom is valuable.

Our Senators and Representatives need to hear from us......in support of how they vote......or in letting them know our views. Many times I have heard them mention when bills come up for vote that they have received a certain number of calls or emails pro or con from their constituents.

These are definitely "times that try men's souls." Don't give up, don't give in, and don't let go. Rest if you must, but don't quit. Press on. Keep up the good fight. As often as we talk about our Founding Fathers, remember that they kept pressing on till they won freedom for all.

Don't buy a GM Car

We should not buy a GM car as long as the U.S. Goverment owns stock.

The US government
Always, yes ALWAYS, requires more money to do a job than it costs when done by private enterprise. This is simply because government is an unaccountable monopoly, and PE is competitive. GM will be another AMTRAK. If GM couldn't make money under private direction, it will lose even more even faster under government control. Private competitive enterprise is the most evil, inefficient way to do anything, except for all others.

Pistol
"The US government Always, yes ALWAYS, requires more money to do a job than it costs when done by private enterprise."

Exactly. Moreover, government always requires more money to do a job this year than it required last year. That would be true even if the scope of the job didn't change continually.

When local government first became involved in education, for example, it was expected to teach reading, writing, math, the rudiments of science, maybe a foreign language, and a bit about history and the Constitution. State and national governments are heavily involved now. Offerings include sports, occupational piddling, psychotherapy, values clarification, attitude adjustment, political indoctrination, sensitivity training, Koranic awareness, and the desserts of many lands. Education consumes 1/20 of the GDP. But having abandoned its core curriculum, the system produces class after class of illiterates. The invariable excuse for this systemic failure, of course, is inadequate funding. A private company with this record of waste, fraud, abuse, and failure would've gone out of business long ago.

F-150
The most popular vehicle is the Ford F-150, not some little putt-putt that can seat 1.5 people comfortably.

Why does our government (I use the term loosely) want us to drive putt-putts and not pickups?
They claim it's to "save the planet" (no proof that it will) or to "stop our dependence on foreign oil" (then drill here in America).

Neither reason given is convincing me. So why does King Obama want us to stop driving pickups? Control. Obama wants to control the basic fundamental things in our life like what we drive and what our health is.

Why does Obama want control? Why does any dictator want control? Why did Hitler or Napoleon or Stalin want control? Some psychological aberration, most likely.

I think Obama hates us all. Whatever his background was (and the jury's still out on that), he simply thinks we don't deserve all that freedom and self-determination because we're basically bad people and he'll teach us all a lesson if it kills us . . .

Where did she learn history?
The author claims America’s history is one of personal responsibility, entrepreneurship and innovation, risk-taking and hard work.
Um...excuse me, but where did she learn history? The history of the American PEOPLE may be described as one of personal responsibility, entrepreneurship and innovation, risk-taking and hard work. But that certainly is not the history of the American GOVERNMENT. The history of the government has been one of murder, supression of dissent, theft, spying, double dealing, treaty breaking, genocide, intervention in the economy, wars of aggression, crony capitalism, incompetence, inefficiency, abject stupidity, cupidity, callousness, economic ignorance, sloth, waste, and indiscreet sexual behavior. From its very beginnings with George Washington. Expecting anything positive out of the US government is a hilarious exercise in folly. And one should not be surprised at any rapacious behavior in government. That is the nature of the beast.
And please: stop conflating the people of America with its government. They are NOT one and the same, and it does a great disservice to Americans.

Paul's point is a good one
we, the people, must demand a stop to all this ridiculous nonsense coming out of DC.

What Il Duce and his puppets are doing will destroy us...these are supposedly intelligent people, if they are so blind or stupid as to not see what this clown's agenda is, they have to go in 2010.

This is no time for apathy, this is serious, everything this moron is doing is wrong. If he won't listen to experts or his own OMB on the outcome and the consequences of his actions, we must conclude he is either completely anti-American or insane.

Passing bills without reading them makes these clowns nothing more than rubber stamps, they are derelict in their duties....we need to fire them all, they're useless.

Paul, try living in Russia and Saudi
Arabia before you trash the American gov't like some leftist prof.

I hear the same garbage daily on campus, and its drivel there and tripe when you write it.

The US has saved or liberated 2 billion people since its Rev. War. 1 billion in Europe between WW's I and II. Additionally, there is the entire Span. Emp. and MILLIONS of slaves (1898), 75,000,000 in the Middle East in the last two decades, let alone we rebuilt Europe after WW II, are the major suppliers of relief and aid anywhere (tsunami in 2005 for one), and support nearly the entire Middle East (Muslim countries count for 50% of foreign aid), and without us, neither the UN not the World Bank nor the International Monetary Fund would exist.

I despise the current gov't and have never thoroughly liked any president, but the US as a political entity has done more good and strives more than any other polity that has ever existed.

If you cannot recognize that your ability to express yourself here doesn't come from your gov't, then your opinion lacks all substance.

Expectation for government intervention
has a long history. Try again.

Oh you would disagree. Let's use Reagan. He took total control of airport control towers, he also bailed out Chrysler, recall the horrible looking K-car?

Not enough? Try the national guard interventions? Oh, is that not actual intervention? Oh, I see, the definition is selective. Recall the 60's if you need a reminder.

How about the "Great Depression"? Oh, but that was all the Democrats fault. They forced so much spending down the throats of Americans. Bad Democrats, bad Democrats!

What else do you want to add?

The take on spending is lopsided all through TH, without common sense as advertised.

Rick, Rick the stick
You are so full of shtick.

Reagan didn't agree to the union for airplane control towers' demands. The fed. gov't owns and runs airports and their towers--so he never needed to *take over* anything--unlike trains, which pay for themselves, save Amtrak, which is a federal entity, and lost $1 BILLION last year.

Reagan NEVER bailed out Chrysler. CARTER (1979) bailed out the old Chrysler. Reagan wasn't president in 1979.

No wonder your posts are so obtuse and inane.

Go to Google and get some REAL facts.

Other people, go to tea parties at your local Cong. reps' and Sens.' offices to protest Obamacare on the 17th.
Bork Sotomayor.

If you feel a small earthquake
don't be alarmed. It's just our founding fathers, Washington, Jefferson, et al, spinning in their graves.

DavidMac
You hit the nail right on the head!

Obama and his Magic Wand
Q. When has any US Government run organization been a money generating enterprise? Answer: Never, that's not what they are in business for. Obama running the Auto industry is another one of his delusional liberal Fantasy's. Obama is a master of the slight of hand, when you focus on the his hand his right hand is lifting your wallet.

GM has been Gov't Motors for some time
GM has run like the government, and when the unions kept making demands, it was the Fed (the Democrats, no the citizens) who started bailing them out. Things are changing in 2010, and guys like this one http://www.theblacksphere.net are making a difference. His BOOK is AWESOME, and a roadmap on how Republicans will win elections going forward.

Bigger is the Antithesis of Better
A bigger and better government is the farthest from reality possible.

To give Politicians more power through growing government is the antithesis of anything ever getting better.

Government intrusion into capitalism through utopian aspirations involving excessive government regulation is the major caused of America's current economic problems.

To give the creators of that problem more power is not only stupid, it is insane.

Can anyone explain to Liberals?

Can anyone explain to Liberals that Barack Obama said he could solve the problems facing America and applied for the job and was elected on that premise?

Can anyone explain to Liberals that Barack Obama is NOW in charge and all Former Presidents are not in charge?

Liberals wanted Barack Obama and now he is in charge - what does anyone else from the past or even the present have to do with what Barack Obama is doing to America?

Everyone should be to the point, where basic judgments should be made on Barack Obama and his policies and team.

Either Barack Obama and his economic team, have no idea what they are doing, stumbling blindly in the darkness of their combined ignorance groping for some solution and searching for excuses for their missteps, mismanagement and folly, or they are willfully trying to create and fuel this disaster so that Barack Obama can crash the entire American economic system, whereas Obama can be 'Supreme Leader' of a new Totalitarian Government, based on 'Fascism' or 'Marxist Socialism' - either way America is in big trouble.

Renny
You were quicker than I to correct Rick. But Rick illustrates a significant part of the reason we have the current government. People accept any statement of "fact", no matter how wrong, because they lack the education necessary to search for, and discern, the truth.

Of course another significant reason the Repubs have fared poorly in recent years can be traced to those in their party who pushed the idea to be like the Democrat party in a quest for "votes". You can't win by discarding your base (Lee Atwater told Bush 41 he could ignore the "gunnies", for they had nowhere to go. They did too, on Election day many sat at home rather than vote for a man who took actions they found against their political interests and the Constitution).

What and Where is the Obama Plan?

Can Liberals Explain to the Rest of us?

Can you Liberals show the rest of us, the Barack Obama plan to 'Solve' the economic crisis?

Where is the plan?

Please post a link that shows the basic outline of the Barack Obama plan?

The plan should show the basic problems the Barack Obama plan wants to solve and then the 'Specific Solutions' that would 'Solve' those specific problems.

I cannot seem to find anything except that Barack Obama is in charge and things will be better now.

That doesn't seem to be very specific.

What and Where is the Barack Obama plan?

Yes, Edward
A whole slew of people educated in the last couple decades have a roster of complaints against Reagan and Reps. that are simply factually wrong.

The Reps. under Bush II spent too much and didn't follow my ec. beliefs with the drug addition to Medicare (already $59 trillion in the ditch) or with No Child Left Behind, as I think the feds. should get out of education entirely.

But the Rep. Cong. under Bubba gave him the nearly balanced budget and rare surplus that the Clintonistas now brag was their legacy. It would never have happened with a Dem. Cong.

As to Rick and the Great Depression from which he is even further removed than Reagan and the 80s, the Dims. and FDR actually created recessions and depressions within the Great Depression. Each time the ec. tried to right itself, the New Deal would spring another depressant on the country and throw it into more negatives.

Two were higher taxes and tariffs that killed exports and the Wagner Act that kicked off an entire internal recession in 1937-1938. The Dems. even knew what they were doing because Sec. of Treas. Morgenthau said in 1938 that no matter how much money they spent, the Depr. wasn't over.

Unemployment under FDR was never lower than 18% until WW II. Ergo, anyone who wants to use the Grt Dep as a shining example for the idiots in DC today simply knows nothing.

Beverly (NM) @ 8:43 AM
Thank you! You are correct about the fact that the leftists have deliberately ignored the principles of the founding fathers and substituted the economic principles of Marx and Engels, not to mention the discredited Keynesian economic theory.

It's a telling fact that Obama has personally criticized radio and TV pundits like Limbaugh and Hannity. Apparently, those guys are doing some good, effective work!

What if they gave a war ...
Who remembers the old mantra from the Viet Nam years? "What if they gave a war, and nobody came?"

It's time to update that slogan: "What if they build a clown car and nobody buys?"

@renny
Go live in Russia or Saudi Arabia? And that will somehow prove how great the wonderful US government is?? HAHAHAHA! Since when do the evil deeds of one government mitigate the evil deeds of ours? That's like saying, "Stop complaining about having John Wayne Gacy as a next door neighbor! You could have Jeffrey Dahmer!" Evil is evil is evil, even if someone does something worse. And as you yourself point out, some of those worse governments were financed BY OURS! You point out how middle eastern governments are financed by our foreign aid, and by the IMF and World Bank. Might I point out that the hated Soviet Union would have fallen a long time ago were it not for the same world bank and IMF you laud?
We freed 2 billion people in WWI and WWII? Wrong sir. Wilson's intervention in World War One led directly to the collapse of the Korenski Government in Russia giving it over to the Bolsheviks. And his intervention also led to the defeat of Germany and the treaty of Versailles. without our "intervention" the Communists never would have come to power in Russia. Without our intervention again in World War Two, the Soviets never would have ended up with half of Europe.
Renny, face it, you are a shill for the US government, the largest government in the history of mankind and a source of much brutality in this world.

MUST SEE!
Most Americans do seem immune to reality and caught up in minor distractions like Government Motors and other Obama adverse actions against the U.S. and we the people.

Parable of the Car that isn't Working

A couple has a car that isn't working and since neither of them are mechanical, they want an expert to 'Fix' the car.

They approach a very confident young man who ensures them he can 'Fix' the car.

He tells them if they will select him, their Car problems will be over, he is very likeable and confident and his words are soothing - they decide he is the one they want and sign a contract to have him 'Fix' the car.

Some time later they ask him how he is doing - he responds 'I won' the contract and you will just have to 'Trust Me'.

They ask 'what is wrong with the car?' - he responds 'I am replacing the muffler system' - they ask - 'is that expensive', he responds 'yes but it is necessary'.

Some time later they ask him 'is the car 'Fixed yet?' - he responds 'I am now replacing the electrical system' - they ask - 'so that is what is wrong with the car?'

He responds 'I have a great deal of experience organizing communities and selling newspaper subscriptions door to door and when you question me it makes me angry'.'

Some time later they ask him 'is the car Fixed Yet?' - he responds 'I am replacing the engine with a really expensive engine, it will save you money in the future and might 'Fix' your problems with the car'.

Some time later they ask him 'We really need our car because we have given you all of our money and are now borrowing money to pay you.'

He responds 'This may take months or even years, you must be patient, after all I didn't break the car someone else did - the broken car was brought to me.'

They respond 'But you asked for the job and we selected you because you said you could 'Fix' it'.

He responds 'I have to go now, I have parties to attend and $100 a pound beef to buy, and my wife needs a $6000 purse and $500 dollar sneakers, your problems are interfering with my Life'.

BTW he asks 'Can you tell me how to distinguish a Door from a Window on my new home?'

Paleocon
You rattle my cage when you bring up education. Since retirement i have got involved with a charter school doing excellent work. The county superintendent hates our guts because we are doing a better job on 30 per cent less money. I urge you and like-minded folks to get involved. Particularly retired engineers like me. What's it worth to have a failing student turn themselves into an A student and say, "I never knew I was smart until you showed me"?

The problems i have seen are not at the teacher level. These problems have to be dealt with on 2 levels. First at the top, with getting the feds out of education and in general, returning control as close as possible to the parents. Second, assisting at the grass roots student level where millions of American kids are falling through the cracks, but will respond to the sort of individual attention possible only from volunteers or low-paid teacher assistants.

DavidMac of 10:11
Barry's sensitivity to any sort of disagreement with his policies reminds me of Nixon. Its obvious they both put career and ego above their responsibilities as leader of a great number of people. This characteristic is shared by leaders judged by history to be disasters. In contrast, great leaders tend to shrug off, even ignore the yapping of their opposition.

GM
Obama said by 2016 all cars would have to get 50 mpg.Its going to be interesting to see the vehicles that GM is making now get that kind of mpg.GM is now making the cars Caddy's buicks, and GM pick ups that the left says nobody wants to buy.Since we own 60% of GM how many ordinary american taxpayers are on the BOD of GM?

Understanding the Obama Czars

Trying to understand anything by the definition of Liberal words, (especially those of Barack Obama) is futile and only leads to confusion of anyone trying to discern what is actually meant.

ObamaSpeak is quite similar to the terms introduced by George Orwell in the dystopian classic "1984", 'DoubleThink' and 'NewSpeak'.

The Orwellian term 'DoubleThink' in simple terms is tightly coupled to 'Cognitive Dissonance', where a person holds two diametrically opposed views of reality as one view, i.e. "War is Peace", "Freedom is Slavery".

The Orwellian term 'NewSpeak' in simple terms, was designed to replace and reduce the concepts of e.g. objectivity and rationalism into one term - 'OldThink'.

The ObamaSpeak term 'Czar', has little if anything to do with the original meaning of the word 'Czar'.

The ObamaSpeak term 'Czar' cannot be understood by definition and must be understood by function.

The German Socialist term 'Führerprinzip' and its intended function, reveals the intended purpose of the ObamaCzar.

This approach is basically a 'Hierarchical' structure where someone is appointed directly and has the sole responsibility of oversight of a particular function i.e. 'Energy', with little interaction with others except for the one who made the appointment.

This effectively bypasses Congress or other oversight and leaves decision making in the hands of the appointer.

In Germany this approach was used not only on business entities but Mayors, Union Leaders etc.

If and when California is bailed out, Barack Obama will appoint a Czar of California to oversee the 'Investment' for the "American People" and thus acquire control of the eighth largest economy in the World and bypass the California Government and its citizens.

This introduces another German Socialist term 'Ausnahmezustand' or in simple terms, governing by Crises, manufactured or because of current conditions.

Paul of 10:35
An interesting post. What is your solution(s) for the mistakes the US government has made? What do you think we should do now? You make the point that our citizens and our government are different entities, which is true. But we have at least a semi-representative government, so if the government is evil, the people are(were) at least partially responsible. How should we handle this?

Retired Geek @ 11:03 AM EST
Very enlightening facts. I've long held that Obama really is "new"; all his ideas have come from others.

"Hope" from the Bill Clinton 1992 campaign and much (as you pointed out) from Orwell's "1984". Add into the Obama gumbo Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" in which Alinsky wrote, "Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are willing to let go of the past and change the future."

That's the Obama Strategy to a "T".

Question for Liberals?

I asked this question of Liberals the other day here at Town Hall.

"Should 'Every Legal' American Citizen enjoy the same 'Rights' and 'Protections' delineated in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights - no more - no less?"

The response was:
"Your question is so 'Confusing' and so out of 'Touch with Reality' that the question cannot NOT be understood - much less answered."

Pistol
"Since retirement i have got involved with a charter school doing excellent work."

Excellent. I applaud you, sir.

"The county superintendent hates our guts because we are doing a better job on 30 per cent less money."

A threat to his comfortable existence, I'm sure.

"The problems i have seen are not at the teacher level."

As expected. Although there are some clueless teachers, the real difficulties seem to arise higher in the chain of command. A generation ago, the late Richard Mitchell (the Underground Grammarian) proposed stripping every school district down to bare metal -- teachers and janitors -- and getting rid of all the under-assistant principals, curriculum coordinators, diversity officers, and so on. In years of reconsideration, I can find no fault with that idea.

"First at the top, with getting the feds out of education and in general, returning control as close as possible to the parents."

Indeed. Federal involvement is worse than merely useless; it's counterproductive. Look at the overall decline since the U.S. Department of Education was created.

"Second, assisting at the grass roots student level where millions of American kids are falling through the cracks, but will respond to the sort of individual attention possible only from volunteers or low-paid teacher assistants."

Interesting that you mention these ideas. I'm by no means wealthy, but I'm seeking employment as a low-paid teacher assistant for the coming academic year and seriously contemplating lateral entry into teaching. Having set off seismographs during previous tenures as a bureaucrat, however, I'm not sanguine about my success.

Understanding the principle of Führerprinzip (Obama Czars).

"The philosophy of this system is that each organization is seen as a hierarchy of leaders, where every leader (Führer, in German) has absolute responsibility in his/her own area, and complete subordination.

This idea was based on the function of military organizations where it is still used today.

The notion behind the civil use of the Führerprinzip was that unquestioning obedience to superiors produces order and prosperity, which would be shared by those deemed 'worthy'. Given the chaotic state of the Weimar Republic between 1919 and 1933, this philosophy of 'cutting through red tape' was regarded by many Germans as a welcome change to what they had endured earlier.

This principle was the law of the Nazi party and later transferred onto the whole German society.

Most notable changes include the replacement of elected local governments by appointed mayors and the cancellation of associations and unions, whose leaders were elected, and their replacement by mandatory associations whose leaders were appointed.

The private corporations were allowed to keep their internal organization, which was just renamed, from hierarchy to Führerprinzip.

In practice, the selection of unsuitable candidates often led to micromanagement and inability to formulate coherent policy was common.

Albert Speer noted that many Nazi officials were very afraid of making decisions unless Hitler was present.

The Führerprinzip, German for "leader principle" prescribes a system with a hierarchy of leaders that resembles a military structure.

This principle was applied to civil society at large in National Socialist Germany."

DavidMac from TX et al

Understanding the principle of Ausnahmezustand.

Barack Obama used the word 'CRISIS' 25 times in his speech about signing the 'Obama Stimulus Fiasco', where most who voted for the Bill had NOT even read the Bill.

The 'First Step' in Socialism, take control of financial systems and devalue the currency by taxation, borrowing, spending and printing worthless money.

Critical thinkers realized the first clue that something was really wrong about Barack Obama, was when he rushed through his economic plan because of the crisis and then borrowed huge amounts of money (to reduce debt?) and now is sitting on most of that money.

Crisis after Crisis are now bubbling to the top across America, from the State of California to Cities like Detroit Michigan.

Barack Obama is focusing everyone’s attention on 'Free Health Insurance' that will cost the Taxpayers Trillions of dollars.

The Obama Administration has withheld irrigation water to the most fertile 100,000 square miles of food producers in the World, in California, causing even more unemployment and financial stress and soon massive food shortages.

Ausnahmezustand in simple terms is the Necessity of declaring 'Martial Law', which "Temporarily" suspends existing rights, rules and regulations in order to deal with the "Crisis".

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set," he said. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded."
Barack Obama Speech July 2, 2008 Colorado Springs CO

This statement debunks any notion that Ausnahmezustand wasn't part of the Obama agenda long before election.

Obama is patient and will wait until the crisis is such that people will want 'Martial Law' and him as the Decision Maker or 'Supreme Leader'.

NO RESPONSIBILITY-NO FREEDOM
NO FREEDOM-NO RESPONSIBILITY

Guess we'll have a Country of people NOT RESPONSIBLE for paying any taxes. Then, just maybe, we'll end up with NO GOVERNMENT and start all over again the way our Founding Fathers meant America to BE and to STAY.

One Nation under God, with Liberty and Freedom for all.

Monthly Energy Stipends
Cap and Tax will turn into a giant redistribution program as lower-income types discover they can't pay Obama's electric, food and transportation bills and begin to receive monthly "energy" stipends.

Paleocon of 11:48
Wonderful. First, i guarantee you will be welcome as a volunteer. I was a volunteer for a year, then asked if there were some way i could be put on the payroll. There is a high turnover in teacher assistants, and once you have established your competence, there should be no problem getting on. Most applicants are a mixed bag and few have degrees. I am paid the princely sum of $9.84/hr. Not much, but not inconsiderable as an addition to my disposable income. The real reward is seeing the huge difference you will be making in the lives of students not lucky enough to have backgrounds conducive to learning. For a dismaying number of students, school is home and home is HeII. The only positive regard they get is at school. It is most rewarding to be part of that support.

cushman is incorrect on ideology
Liberals/statists are very clear that in regards to their ideology, in that they believe government can legislate it's way toward some kind of utopia.
Repugnants however have no consistent ideology. For instance, they make claims of being the party of limited government, but fail both in articulating the reasons behind this and in actually attempting to govern in such manner.
I am of the opinion that if there were actually leaders in the party who could stand up and define the purpose of government and why it needs to minimal, that many would rally behind them, and upon hearing the reasoning properly expounded would be enheartened and convinced.
Simply put government is that which we the people delegate authority to for peace and order. It is to protect life, liberty and property/fruit of labor, along with a few mutually beneficial activities such building roads and possibly education, IF it really informed the public and thus enabled them to preserve and perpetuate our freedoms.
For everything else, there is no need for something external to the people. A legal system is needed to have a mediator between people when there are disagreements. This is also the purpose of law, so that there is an understood, agreed to conduct among citizens.
Military is needed to defend ourselves from others. CHARITY, HOWEVER can only be voluntary and government is not needed for this as it is not protecting my natural rights, BUT WOULD have to violate my rights of conscience and property/fruit of labor.

Unfortunately,
Obama is a prisoner of the liberal orthodoxy that says problems are solved by government programs. This is the precise wrong time in history for gargantuan spending programs. We are building a giant debt bubble and when it bursts, it will shake the entire world.

Where is the birth certificate?

If we could go to the moon, Joe the Plumber's MVD records could be published within 24 hrs., and Palin's private emails could be hacked, why can't some terrific investigative reporter find King Elect O's birth certificate?

Aw, c'mon, Lenard.

The name of the guy is Ron Paul.

You know, the one of whom the drive-by media is so scared that they did everything in their power to brand him a "kook." The one the RINOs avoid like the plague.

The OB/GYN who wants to double-glove and shove his fist all the way up the figurative snatch of the Federal Reserve System.

"Just turn your head and cough, Mr. Bernanke."

That Ron Paul.

Quit whining and get aboard.

Good point, but not complete
"...having the conviction that how you represent your version of reality is what actually matters."

This is true, but there is more to it than this. Ronald Reagan was surely a person who had the convictions of his policies. He didn't go all wobbly and weak in the knees when he was criticized, but neither did he retaliate with anger. He usually just smiled that wonderful disarming smile that always made his critics wonder "Why am I picking on this guy?" Then he would calmly explain why his vision was right, and the other guy’s was wrong.

This ability to communicate is vital. President G.W. Bush had confidence in his convictions too, and he stood fast in the face of opposition from all over the world and at home, but he was not able to explain, or he didn't do it often enough, in order to keep people on his side.

Those Republicans in office today have the opposite problem. They have operated under the conservative banner, perhaps because it was popular for awhile, but now they don't know why they adopted conservatism. They can't explain its advantages, because they never truly believed in it. They continue under the Republican brand, but they will gladly change the definition of that brand if it will keep them in office. Trouble is, wishy-washy politicians is one thing Americans of both parties despise.

Liberal 'Progressive Insanity'

Barack Obama is a prime example of Liberal 'Progressive Insanity'.

Most humans try to understand complex systems and/or problems by using 'High Level Abstraction', or reducing each problem and/or system to the fewest components, so that each individual component may be analyzed and examined, bringing about an understanding of the complex problems or systems by their basic foundation or basic structure.

Barack Obama and Liberals use 'Low Level Abstraction' increasing the problems or systems to the highest number of components and then before any analysis begins, they begin to add components and then wait and see what happens before they begin to repeat the process.

The end result of the Barack Obama and Liberal approach, is that everything is now so confusing that NO one can understand the problems or systems - NOT even them.

This seems more of a method of Marxist thinking - an attempt to understand things as they are in complexity or will become in even more complexity, rather than some attempt to actually design a system.

Notice Barack Obama and Liberals always want to add these components, by contending they are critical to any type of success, without anyone even reading or debating the components and then Obama explicitly or implicitly states that the new component or mix of components will be examined later.

Barack Obama and Liberals then term this 'Progress' and this becomes the underlying foundation of 'Liberal Progressives' (Liberalism).

Neocon fear and insanity!
It's ludicrous to rant on and on the regurgitations of each other. Here I have to repeat myself countless times in order to refute the nonsense!

Cap-n-TRADE - I
Fat Al Bore invested $2mn into "green energy" and he is now worth $100mn. Further, he is fast on his way to being the first "Green" billionaire.

The Pelosi family owns STOCK in a "green energy" company.

Obama has admitted that Cap-n-Tax will not decrease emissions.

Paul Krugman stated that there will be no net increase in American jobs.

Microsoft, among other corporations, has said that it will move overseas to avoid Obamanism.

General Electric and Goldman-Sachs, both recipients of TARP funds, have already established "green energy" arms to TRADE carbon credits. You missed that part of Cap-n-TRADE, didn't you?

Suffice it to say:

Ladies and Gentlemen, when the baseball players bet on the game, you get a bunch of Pete Roses.

Cap-n-TRADE - II
Guess which company first supported Cap-n-TRADE?

Any takers? It was ENRON.

You thought that credit default swaps were a catastrophe. Just wait until you get a load of the "exotic financial instrument" known as a carbon credit.

Iran has the world's 5th largest oil and natural gas reserves; yet, it imports gasoline because of a lack of refineries.

The United States has ~2,000 TRILLION cubic feet of natural gas, which has yet to be tapped. It is #1 in the world, as far as natural gas reserves, but is the #1 importer of natural gas.

France gets more than 75% of its energy from nuclear plants. It has an innovative method of recycling nuclear waste, which it reuses in nuclear facilities.

Jimmy Carter put into place a ban on nuclear waste recycling.

Italy will be exporting its nuclear waste to Oak Ridge, TN.

The Chinese are drilling 50 miles off of Florida.

There are ~800,000 barrels of oil that naturally seep onto California beaches.

The best fishing is, and has always been, around an offshore oil/gas platform.

So, environuts, chew on that.

1% = Almost Stone Age

Wind and solar account for 1% of energy nationwide.

When the Kennedys say YIOBY and allow windmills off of "The Compound", then I will put a solar panel on my house in the French Quarter.

It is always NIMBY, but Texas and Louisiana, "we just love your oil and gas."

Did you know that 75% of our natural gas flows through a pipeline to the Northeast?

Rick from MN et al

You are posting a link to a nonsensical organization that is run by a former Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton appointee.

They specialize on the following:

* Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (for example, by encouraging efforts to expand health coverage among low-income working families);

* Food stamps (for example, by designing and promoting state options to simplify and streamline food stamp procedures and thereby boost participation among working-poor families);

* Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (for example, by helping states design programs that can help TANF recipients succeed in the workplace and increase their earnings);

* Supplemental Security Income (for example, by promoting policies that increase the fairness and accuracy of the disability determination process);

* WIC and child nutrition (for example, by helping states contain WIC costs by negotiating advantageous contracts with infant formula manufacturers);

* Low-income housing programs (for example, by designing improvements to help families with housing assistance use it to move to areas with better job opportunities).

* Low-income tax credits (for example, by developing proposals to improve the operation of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit and by helping states create or expand state EITCs).

--------------------

Of course they will agree and say Barack Obama is doing the correct things.

Next time choose Michelle Obama to authenticate what Barack Obama is doing, she has the same financial interests as the 'Center on Budget and Policy Priorities'.

Damned AGW Skeptics - I
"Why don’t they just shut up!
The science is settled! We have consensus."

Well, except for those 32,000 American scientists who have signed a petition saying they don’t agree that anthropogenic, or man-made, global warming is threatening society as we know it.

And now we have another one – another skeptical scientist who attempts to enlighten the cult of AGW as to how the science actually works. I’ll let him lay it out:

So why the fuss lately about man-made global warming? The melting Arctic? Do you know we’ve only been monitoring the extent of Arctic ice via satellites since 1979? And while Arctic ice coverage has declined, it’s actually been rising since 2006. And have you heard Antarctic sea ice has increased by nearly 14% since 1979?

The global warming crowd is quick to blame the release of carbon dioxide thru the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil, gasoline, natural gas, and coal, for warming our climate and setting us on a path for doom.

Since before the industrial revolution the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been rising, up to around 385 parts per million by volume today. That amounts to a miniscule 0.0385% of the atmosphere. Increased CO2 levels are beneficial to plants since they require carbon dioxide to grow. In this experiment, plants exposed to CO2 levels of 1,090 parts per million by volume by far exhibited the most growth.

So, does carbon dioxide drive the climate? The answer is no!

Natural cycles play a much bigger role with the sun at the top of the list. A look at total solar irradiance since 1600 shows a distinct correlation to temperature readings. Readings are higher now than anytime in the past 400 years!

Then there’s El Nino Southern Oscillation, the North Atlantic Oscillation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation, the Arctic Oscillation, the Pacific-North American Teleconnection, Milankovitch forcing, ocean variations, and so on and so forth.

Is there any way to model all these variables? Again, the answer is no! The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, has tried and failed!

Back in 2001 the IPCC released a suite of computer model solutions depicting the future state of the atmosphere. These reports by the IPCC are used repeatedly to drive policy around the world. But, if you look at what’s happened since then, global temperatures are actually on a downward trend, whether you look at actual thermometer readings across the world or satellite-derived temperatures. This when the IPCC models were predicting continued warming.

GM will not turn a Profit
Unless the Obama Team skews the numbers. This is another Train wreck waiting to happen. The only way GM will move any Vehicles now, is to sell them to the Government. These Vehicles will be used for 1 Year and then sold at a loss, only to be replaced by next Years GM models.

Him An' Me
Says:

While I admire and agree with the logic and conclusions of the article, I suggest we look closely at two words which have become interchangeable. Principles and values are not synonymous. Principles are fundamental specific truths or laws. They do not fluctuate repeatedly. Values do fluctuate (often rapidly) as needs and/or desires evolve. Values are relative. It is my sense that Governor Sarah Palin’s positions are rooted firmly in principles, whereas President Barack H. Obama’s positions are based on the relativity of changing values. Have we forgotten Values Clarification? I hope not."
____________________________
EXCELLENT POST! I wish more people understood the very important distinction you are making here.

The consultants and pundits refer to the 'values voters' which is another of those amorphous political phrases such as 'community values' - meant to conjure up visions, get some political traction but actually mean nothing.

Obotman can talk of 'values' but, from his policies and acts, he actually stands for some pretty ugly things: economic destruction and control, degrading the nation internationally, divide and control domestically based on race/class warfare politics, extension of his power through lies and intimidation, etc.

This is what he 'values' and are his values, none of which is based on principle.

Hitler was a man who had 'values'. He valued the political expediency obtained from race based politics - and he also valued exterminating his racial ('inferior') enemies.

Hitler wasn't burdened much with 'principle' either.

So much for 'values voters'.

Just A Point of Clarification
It's possible for this reader of the article by Jackie Gringrich Cushman to be left with the impression that a 2 to1 change toward a more conservative tendency America has occurred during the Obama Presidency. But, the polling question was worded in a way that asked the subjects to compare their view with that of the past few years. So, the poll does not necessarily indicate a massive change to radical conservatism over the last few months; but possibly a comparative change over a period of years.
Those results not withstanding the election of Barack Obama.

It also does not take into account the 'qualitative' difference in the conservative change that may have occurred. For example, on a scale of 1 to 10, what is the degree of change? Some who answered in the affirmative that “their view had become more conservative in the past few years”, doesn't say that the change in point of view is great enough to make an ideological change—in other words, how many liberals and moderates actually made a shift that would make a difference ideologically. And the largest component of those who have become more conservative were conservatives in the first place; so this segment doesn't represent an ideological change at all, since they were conservative in the first place.

Upon examination of the Gallup report listed above, you will notice a reversal in the percentage of popularity of some traditionally conservative issues; and, on balance, a similar reversal has occurred on some liberal issues. These mixed outcomes only confirm the suggestion that this study does not represent an unequivocal trend toward conservatism—which Ms. Cushman's article may suggest to some.
