Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

President Barack Obama will celebrate his first 100 days in office on April 29.  He has tackled big issues head-on and continued his campaign of well-delivered speeches and late night TV appearances. Delivering on his promise of getting a first dog for the first children, he has captivated the hearts of dog lovers, while evoking the hope and optimism that marked Camelot.

What’s not to love?  Beautiful, smart wife with incredible arms seen tilling a White House garden in sweater and boots, photogenic children who want to go to their private school when it snows – (who could have - had they been in public school), a president, tall, handsome, cool and collected.

Obama, referred to as “a storybook” by then-Senator Joseph Biden, must realize that Americans like happy endings to their storybooks, especially in times of trouble.  Regardless of what some radio talk-show hosts might say, the culture of America wants individuals to succeed, especially if those individuals are personally appealing, as is Obama.  As one conservative friend told me over dinner, “but they just look so good.”

The question is – what would be the price if the president were to succeed in getting what he wants?

In his op-ed “Yanks in Crisis,” (New York Times, April 23, 2009), David Brooks cites numerous polls and concludes that “the economic crisis has produced a desire for change but not a philosophical shift.”  Brooks says that, “after this crisis is over, they [the American People] still want a return to normalcy, with balanced budgets and a limited state. Americans still want to see power dispersed among a diversity of institutions, not concentrated in the hands of supertechnocrats in Washington.”

While the values of the American people (faith in people, not in government) might give David Brooks comfort, these same views are not being reflected in the proposals of the Obama administration.  Obama has laid out a sweeping agenda that calls for huge changes in how the American economy would operate.

John Judis writes in “Fundamentally Different: That's what American capitalism will be once Obama's done with it,” (The New Republic, April 23, 2009) that the impact of Obama’s policies will be “the balance of economic power away from the private and toward the public sector. The American relationship of state to economy will begin to look more like that of France and Sweden, whose non-crisis budgets total over 45 percent of GDP. And our politics may change accordingly--shifting public opinion on regulation, spending, and taxes well to the left.”

How, you might ask, does this happen, since the American people do not share these values?  The answer – little by little, step by step – like everything else.

Obama’s remarks at Georgetown University on April 14 give insight into how language changes understanding.  “I absolutely agree,” said Obama, “that our long-term deficit is a major problem that we have to fix. But the fact is that this recovery plan represents only a tiny fraction of that long-term deficit.”

The fact is correct but only because the debt more than doubles under his proposed budget, from $10 trillion (actual 2008) to $23 trillion in 2019.  The 130 percent increase in debt is what makes the recovery plan appear to be a “tiny fraction” of the long-term deficit.  But don’t get lost in the words: It’s not that the stimulus is small – but that the projected debt under Obama’s plan is immense.

The question is not only how fast we can help the economy recover, and at what economic cost – but also what would be the cost to our culture?

Bailing out companies, chasing stimulus money, converting government preferred stock into common stock (moving towards social democracy), making perpetrators victims, waiting for government to intervene and fix.  These proposed changes do not reflect the America of opportunity and free enterprise – of hard work and reward.

Many of those Americans who have been financially successful in legitimate ventures are now trying to hide the fruits of their hard work.  What has happened?  In an effort to ease the pain – we have only spread it around.

While economic redistribution might “heal the pocketbook, it does not feed the soul” according to Arthur Brooks, president of the American Enterprise Institute, “Americans are happiest as a nation of makers, not takers.”

It’s not the money that makes us happy, it might help us get by, but it doesn’t make us happy.  We’re happiest when individuals – not institutions -- are helping others, creating value and making a difference.  This happens in a country of opportunity, free enterprise and limited government.

If we are not careful, instead of change we can believe in – we are going to have change, in what we believe.

Let's close our eyes and think about what sort
of person would make that sort of comment, even
if it were true.

I am betting my future that this is what Obama
wants too, with a few exceptions, which is what
I also want. The most important exception is
National Health Care. I didn't say, necessarily NationalIZED health care, but national health care. And no more talk - EVER - about privatized Social Security. My
privatized pension went down by 50%, thank you
very much.

On day 100, Obama said very clearly - I don't want to be Mr. Goodwrench. Think about
that.

Jackie
Are you Newt Gingrich's daughter? Or sister?

I have no interest in his ever becoming the
President of the USA, but I sure would love it
if he would take over Rush's job as spokesman
for your party. It would benefit the entire
USA if someone put some metaphorical tape over
Limbaugh's mouth and find a replacement.
Newt seems to have more common sense and a bit
of a sense of humor to go with it.

Would he be interested in following through?

Question error on previous blog: :
"How could our government provide a treatment for a pre-existent Pandemic?

CORRECTION: It should read: :

How is it possible to FORMULATE a treatment for a NOT-YET-EXISTENT Pandemic?

Simple: You plan ahead for both!

THE EMERGING PANDEMIC
No one has commented on forced Vaccinations, and Fema Camps for those who refuse the Medication. Re: Obama's visit to Mexico at the Pandemic's onset. Why was he unaffected? A personal antidote? Does a visit to Mexico at the onset of this "terror" suggests he's an innocent (and lucky) bystander?

Why would an "orchestrated" Pandemic be necessary? The New World Order demands a smaller population to be successful.

The Elitists are alive and well, and on a Mission to rule the World. A well-planned Agenda is invaluable.

Their membership might not surprise or astound you!
During the Geo. Bush Sr. Admin. He revealed to a "New World Order." in the "works" (awaiting its Debut on the World's Stage.

Obama was hand-picked. Ever see the film when his teleprompter went out? He couldn't put a sentence together. He is never without his concealed tele-prompter.

The real Leader of this Land of the Free and Home of the Brave is obviously Rahm Emanuel. Obama jumps to his commands but they are on the same page.

We face an orchestrated and formidable Pandemic. Free Speech will
soon be past tense. Phone Lines and Computers are already "hacked."

Do hope to survive the Pandemic. Refuse the med. for this Plague. Formulated to wreak havoc with immune systems. The "cure" more horrific than the Disease.

How is it possible to formulate a treatment for a pre-existent Pandemic? Hmm?

Financial De-Bunked
Great article that sums up the whole financial escapade! Most people have the "Herd" mentality, don't pay attention, & follow whatever they are told to "think" by the regular Media. This is a fact that unfortunately, the Republicans found out way too late! I hope for the sake of our Country that people "wake-up" before it is too late!

Liberals love Socialism
We know that Obama was championed by the New Party, a radical marxist group and we know that Congressional leaders are Progressive Democrats, socialist/marxists, formerly aligned with the CPUSA (until it was reported). So many of their liberal followers today are openly championing socialism. Do they know that socialism is only a brief pause in the path to Communism? Karl Marx, the Father of Communism, author of the 'Communist Manifesto' was asked what he hoped to accomplish with Communism. He replied, "My object in life is to dethrone God and destroy capitalism."

Does that mean he wanted to be treated as if he was God and to destroy economic freedom so that everyone had to serve him and depend on him? He claimed Communism would liberate people, but what he designed turned out to be the system that enslaves sheeple under a dictator, not a liberator.

There are still people, in this country, who praise Marx and extol the “virtues” of Communism. Or they applaud socialism, saying it is “fair.” I am waiting for these lovers of socialism to say that it is alright if they have to work everyday producing so that their non-productive neighbors can have everything they (the producers) have but with no investment of time and sweat.

Listen up. Socialism may work for a little while like that. That is what we have now. Soft Socialism. Except the producers aren’t real happy about it. They think that equal reward should require equal time and sweat. That is why liberals are so rabidly trying to bring down our free market system. They don’t realize that capitalism is the only barrier that stands between them and BEING FORCED TO WORK. The only free pass holders in the Communist world are the card-carrying elite leaders. And 99 and 44 one hundredths percent of you are not one of them.

Renny and Healthcare
Renny, you are absolutely correct about the future concerns of universal healthcare. Imagine having the systems that you just described! I wonder if anybody truly understands the peril facing them.

I work in healthcare, and had the pleasure of working with Canadian physicians who left their country due to the socialized medicine problems faced there - long waits for sonograms and other tests, losing patients to treatable breast cancer due to the expensiveness of the treatment, etc.

I also have observed our own version of "universal" healthcare in this country - it is called the Veterans Administration. I have had patients tell me to "let me die before you send me back to that VA hospital - at least I will die close to home rather than that nasty hellhole." Hasn't the news recently been full of stories about HIV exposure at a VA facililty? A southern Illinois VA hospital stopped performing surgeries due to a high number of infections / deaths after the procedures. Former VA nurses have told me of problems they have observed in VA hospitals, and how nothing was done when reported. Our service men and women deserve better.

Can you imagine the reaction when people are forced to go to clinics and wait for hours for treatment? The ER waiting room would suddenly be empty, as many folks currently use that access to avoid waits in doctor offices / clinics. They would be forced to go and wait with the rest of the populace.

If we go universal, will we have caps on lawsuit awards? If nurses and doctors are "government employees", does that mean that they are protected from lawsuits? Now THAT is the ONLY benefit that I can see in this whole process! I once had a doctor tell me that he could charge $ 10 / visit if he did not have to pay $100,000/year in insurance! Maybe that is where we need to start in controlling healthcare costs!

The story
I have to thank Ms. Cushman for writing on this timely subject, while half her Townhall peers are obsessing and emoting over gay marriage and beauty queens' opinions and gay bloggers' counter-opinions on gay marriage. Nero while Rome burns.

There are a couple of negative trends that conservatives had better address pronto.

First, with the death of numerous print media outlets, their unemployed are rushing to fill positions in conservative outlets. This means an ideological takeover. Already, I have seen signs of it in Fox, from the green philosophy during the 24 commercials to their frighteningly liberal polls. They show a wide gap in Republican vs. Dem approval levels and contradict Rasmussen's consistent results of a closing gap. Their new Presidential approval poll is also way off the mark. If the conservatives who own and work at Fox don't start exercising quality control and culling the herd, Fox will eventually become a liberal outlet.

Second, this spread-the-blame for the crisis mentality is single-handedly destroying the conservative movement. If you say that bankers deserve some blame, then A. You don't know what you are talking about, because they did not cause the crisis; the government did. Any "mistakes" they made are entirely irrelevant. The crisis was caused by the mark-to-market rule. Given that rule, there was nothing the bankers could have done to stop the crisis. NOTHING. B. The logical implication of private sector blame is further government interventions. Arguing that government screws things up and cannot do it better than the private sector is an invalid and losing argument, because if the private sector screws up in such a massive way, then logically, government can at least mandate a fix, even if it doesn't take over outright. But that is precisely what causes crises. The right needs to change its message entirely. It needs to start blaming the government for the crisis and absolving the private sector.

If either the healthcare or cap and
trade become law

1) the gov't will have access to all of your med. recs and decide whether you deserve treatment or not; the Big O has already said of the elderly that they should take dying in stride--typical lefty callousness

2) you will not get to choose your own dr. or hosp eventually, because ALL single-payer systems (Brit, Can, Germ) ration medical care and people stop going into medicine--Can. has a dr. shortgage so great you may not get a drs.' appointment for months; in Brit., you don't make an app't, but you go to *surgery* and wait interminabley to be seen

3) cap and trade will regulate and make you report you house temp, how much gas you buy, where you have driven, whether you can use a wood-burning fireplace, or take a vacation, ever.

Once energy is reg. by DC, ALL costs and everything will rise from well to the clothes on your back, which are petroleum based if you don't iron them.

Electricity could be $1200-$2000 more per year per average family of four making $50,000 and gas could easily be $10 a gal, as it is $10 a liter in Germany. Your standard of living will plummet.

4US a very good post
I wonder if First is independently wealthy so that he will not have to depend on the universal health care that is forthcoming. I hope this individual is also very healthy and taking care of himself. It will be to his advantage if he is young and has no bad habits. The prospects for the less than perfectly healthy older citizen is bleak. The Dutch could teach him something about old people being made to feel it is their “duty to die.” It has become their culture. Needless to say, for all of its “socialist perfection” that is not a kinder, gentler society. In countries with universal healthcare, including England, people die waiting months for surgery that would have be available to them in days or even hours in our current health system. But they know all that and still want it?

Of course the other scenario is that First is a taker. Not wealthy, not particularly concerned about anything except that no one gets in the way of his government taking care of him. He should wake up and realize that if the President has his way, most of the workers, the taxpayers, the providers will be out of a job. Then who will take care of everyone? Will the Fed (owned by the global elitists who also own the Leaders) keep printing money until it takes a wheelbarrow full to buy a loaf of bread? Not much providing power there.

szhome - on target
in your reply to First. First in what, I wonder. The President and his advisors and party leaders are first in destroying this nation, economically and culturally, and First is just one of the millions of cult followers who will find it very difficult to be grateful if the conservatives do manage by the help and grace of God to save our country.

First and his friends seem oblivious to the hideousness of this energy bill. This bill furthers draconian "sustainable development" which is based on the junk science of global warming. Global warming - climate control - is a smoke screen blinding the less than aware, trusting followers of the current leaders. These people have great global plans and are using hate and scare tactics to strengthen their choke hold on the citizenry and strip away freedoms. They want to do away with private property, the free market, and democracy. And their ongoing attempts to decrease the population of Americans will not cease.

The energy bill, which if passed and enacted as is, will burn bridges needed to ever get back to a free society. There may be no getting back. No second chances. This is not something that you can say, “If it doesn’t work, we will just change it.” The only hope is to stop it, and Congress needs to step in and throttle the EPA. It should be dismantled.

First, you should be First in protesting what the President is doing to America.

First and Socialism
First, you appear to be a super-socialist, and have nothing but praise for socialistic society. You forget that America was designed as a constitutional repubic. We tried socialism here in 1652 with the Mayflower compact - and found that it was a dismal failure. Socialism does not promote industry. People did not have initiative to produce, knowing that someone else would care for them if they did not.

We have a microcosim of socialism here in the form of unionization. Initially, unions had a purpose - coal miners were essentially owned by the company, and were paid with company script. Now, we have other protections, such as the NLRB and the EEOC. With unions, the leaders speak for the rank-and-file, and there is no incentive to do a great job. Everyone must be happy with the status quo - and the raises are all the same. The bosses are often corrupt - and the mafia has had an unholy alliance with the unions. The modern history of unions have shown bloodshed when honest men have tried to defeat the corrupt union bosses - and died for the effort (I am talking about the Janoski family - NOT Hoffa).

Socialism corrupts as efficiently as any other political system. You may want to read Animal Farm by George Orwell - or, better yet, go enjoy life in those socialistic countries, with my blessings and best wishes!

You said:
" If these American idiots don't wake up before the 2010 election they will cause all of the live in Socialism/Communism from now on. The progressives are stomping on our Constitution and our Bill of Rights."

Socialism is super but is very different from Communism. The Republican Party has been actually a great friend to Communist dictatorships by sending food and medical supplies to Kim Jong Il in N. Korea, sending Communist China's our best high tech jobs stealing them from U.S. workers, borrowing trillions to keep the fantasy of free market capitalism afloat a little while longer and bequeathing "Most Favored Trading Nation" status on China while ignoring pollution and serial human rights abuses.

Socialism as it is practiced in Europe is super good, more productive, more efficient and far superior to the corrupt crony Capitalism that has ruined the American economy through greed and corruption and hand outs to Wall Street and Auto industries.

Let's also not forget that it was actually the proto-nazi Republican machine that trampled our Constitution and the rule of law through:
:Illegal war of aggression against Iraq violating the Constitution and reaffirmend in the 1974 Ear Powers Act
:Warrantless wire tapping of innocent Americans breaking FISA law and the 4th amendment of our Constitution
:Using torture against POW's which violate are signatory agreement with the geneva Conventions, the uniform code of Military Justice and our Constitution.

The Socialist Revolution will cleanse America of the ills perpetuated through the fascist Republican Party and restore fairness, Constitutional integrity and the rule of law to our nation.

to sz in Il
Sorry sz but while I find right wing propoganda amusing, Conservative propoganda has no resonance or credibiity outside of TownHall or right wing hate speech.

That's why Democrats landslided Republicans in 2008 and Republicans STILL have no coherent philosophy. All of the tenets of Conservatism were betrayed by your own elected Conservatives. Conservatism is a functionally a dead end as a political system because it fails to take human nature into account has a profound distaste for government and does not even respect our Constitution or the rule of law.

The American public was tired of being lied to by the proto-nazi Republican machine and booted them from office. In 2010 more Republicans will be booted for their obstructionism and incompetence.

Even many Conservatives voters don't like how the party has behaved because they were hood winked by their idols: Cheney, Rove, Sweatty Sinner Swaggert, Mark Foley, Adulter Newt and Hyde, Larry Craig and Pastor Ted Haggard. The very leaders of Conservatism demonstrated through their actions that Conservatism in practice was just a facade and a fantasy.

Histocrically even Prescott Bush profitted and was disciplined in the 1940's for doing business with Hitler and what is obvious to most now is that the acorn has not fallen far from the tree.

Fortunately, The Socialist revolution is gearing up to oust the lawless Republican bandits from power and restore democracy, the rule of law and respect for our Constitution. Just this week another Republican in N.Y. state was axed by voters. We can all be thankful to see the end of Conservatism as a serious idea.

progressive liberals
I could care less about Michelle's arms, children, garden or the new mutt. How could anyone care about her arms when Obama is destroying our country. He is a Socialist/Marxist. I am amazed at the sheer stupidity of the people who voted for him. The writing was on the wall before the election and all the fools who believed his crap voted for him. If these American idiots don't wake up before the 2010 election they will cause all of the live in Socialism/Communism from now on. The progressives are stomping on our Constitution and our Bill of Rights. Stop defending this elitist.
Beckmaster

What we believe doesn't matter
President Obama said it better then anyone else could of. Whatever we once were. Now that Obama is President, we are whatever he says we are. We think however we're told to think. We buy whatever we're pushed to buy. President Obama is the one who said this is not a Christian nation. President Obama is the one who apologized for us on his tour of Europe and listened to the socialist and communists blame this country for the wrongs of the world. This is not the world I live in. Those are the words of President Obama. With change and twisted words, comes abandoning the past and embracing the future with President Obama as the most highest leading us out of the dark past we lived into a brighter future with the world he's creating for American's. Belief is the key to creating the world President Obama wants for all of us. Those who don't believe in President Obama are identified as enemies by the DHS. There's only one man I can think of who spoke like President Obama does. Only he did it in front of the United Nations before Obama became President. He was also tolerated because Bush was President. Now that Bush is gone, he is walked out on. He has been replaced with a better speaker who talks of a better world under him and under his justice and rule. Ahmadinejad has been replaced with President Obama.

Conservatism is dead 2
My earliest exposure to liberalism was during the Johnson “Great Society” years when government programs encouraged fathers to leave their baby’s mothers so that welfare checks would come to the house. Policies encouraged illegitamacy by paying more money for each additional child born to single mothers. Once they had a needy population well established, our esteemed liberal lawmakers began to send able-bodied people payment which often exceeded what they would receive in entry-level positions, further reinforcing the desire to stay home and have more children. Liberalism has devastated the American poor in ways that we may never recover. Families who refused “charity” to in the past became part of the entitled mindset. I was raised by very conservative parents who were adamant that I should pay my way by taking any job, no matter how menial, and not look for a government handout.

You also blamed Wall Street thievery and I am sure that bank failures on conservatives. Does the fact that Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, and Lacy Clay, Jr. knew about the problems in the banks, but turned the investigators concerns into allegations of racism? Did the Jimmy Carter administration not begin this whole charade by forcing banks to make loans to those who could not afford to make the payments in order to allow everyone to have their own home? And, while I am on the topic about Peanut Jimmy – let’s look at his military brilliance and foreign policy during his reign – can you say Iranian hostages?

Your comparison of Nazis and conservative proves how little you truly know about either. Nazis = anything for the Fatherland. The individual is not as important as the whole; Conservatives = individual responsibility, accountability, and personal giving. Conservatives are NOT nazis, statists, socialists, or, Marxists. Do you know where you fall? You need to go back to your Daily Kos site and get more talking points. These were pretty weak.

First: Conservatism is dead Part 1
First, you state “conservatives have prove for 25+ years now that they are incompetent and cannot govern our nation effectively.” So, 25+ years? Beginning when? In 1980? Do you remember that Democrats held the majority in the two houses during the Reagan years? No? We had 40+ years of Democratic control of both houses. The Republican Revolution did not occur until Clinton was in office, and that was reversed with the poor decisions made by GW Bush, who was not a true social conservative.

Next issue: Racism. Are you not aware that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would NOT have passed if not for conservatives, as the yellow-dog democrats of the south (including Albert Gore’s father) were adamantly against the law! Homophobes? Really? Based on what information? Many conservatives are also Libertarians, who do not believe that the state should make a law about marriage either way, as it is an issue for the church and not the state. To continue: syping on Americans? Can you remember when 900 FBI files were moved to the Clinton White House? Was that for bathroom reading?

Here is the most AMAZING issue you blamed on conservatives – “giving OBL a free pass to escape” Where have you been! Since when is Bill Clinton a conservative? Offers were made to hand OBL over to him – and he DECLINED! We would know more about his actions during those years, but the actions of Sandy Burglar prevented true review. Failing to protect America after 9/11? Have any more buildings fell that I was not aware of? Was our water poisoned? Biological attacks? As far as protecting the border goes- what is our esteemed liberal Homeland Security head saying about that? Has she been shouting to the rooftops about putting up a fence and increasing patrols?

See Part 2

Obama
Is it true that your wife had to teach you to be black? To bad she didn't know how to be an American or understand the History behind our great country. Go back to Kenya and take your "family" with you. And don't forget to take the Clintons also.

The O is an obamanation
O cares nothing for the Constitution, for you and me, or for America.

O is a leftist internationalist, a deconstructionist of Am. institutions and culture, and a narcissistic Lenin-Hitler sociopath who believes in his own superiority and power.

I hope by 2010, we can disabuse him of all his tendencies.

Go to tea party calendars on the net and find one near you. Jersey has four listed for the 4th of July and one for DC on Sept. 12, which I will try to make.

Only by taking to the streets that the left thinks it owns will either party or the MSM wake up and find there is a major rebellion within the nation that opposes them.

Reality Check
I am not seeing the same thing that is being described about these people. I see anti-American bigots who despise the nation and her people and will work tirelessly to destroy both. I see no glamour or glitz, either. Instead I see a couple of sullen malcontents who believe that they have been dissed by whitey. I believe about half of the nation needs to have a reality check.

A change to statism
This isn't just left vs right (aka liberal vs conservative) but also statist vs libertarian (or statist vs freedom). Statists include communists, facists and to a lesser extent socialiasts. And the Republican's have also been moving in this direction. Both Bush and McCain supported the bailouts. Bush's "compassionate conservatism" resulting in the prescription drug plan and the creation of the TSA and Homeland Defense dept. were all large increases in government and a move towards statism. The Repblican budgets were also large moves towards less freedom. And Republicans are big supporters of corporate welfare.

We need to elect people who believe in freedom, and who will vote that way rather than merely pay lip service to it. I say when given the choice between two evils (a democrat and a republican) I'd rather vote libertarian. But I'd prefer that we choose a supporter of freedom in the primaries so we have a non-evil choice likely to win.

Otherwise, the "Change In What We Believe" will be what we've voted for, and what we deserve.

Monsters Behind the Facade
I don't care how good the First Couple looks. What matters is what they are doing to this country and what they are trying to do. Their bodies may be attractive but their ideas are ugly and terrifying.

They are like the Dionysus witches of mythology. They look great but what they want to do to Americans is absolute evil.

If their ideas for America could be visualized and personified you would see the grinning faces of Stalin, Chairman Mao, and Adolph Hitler.

Kirk
You are absolutely correct. we have to go the whole distance or this Country will be totally lost.

Men of integrity, many years ago fought for our freedoms and created the best nation on earth and handed us a paper called the constitution, and we now have allowed the formation of a Tyrannical Government.

We can't have fringe groups & Socialists in all of our institutions tearing this Country apart.
We must fight until until the battle is won.

Write DC and march in tea parties
The public stopped *comprehensive immigration reform* two summers ago with emails, letters, phone calls, and FAXes, and card check is virtually dead, at least his year, because of the united efforts of US businesses and their Chambers of Commerce.

People's opinions do have enduring effect, and while blogging here, you also need to write DC relentlessly, or they cannot know through the idiot MSM or tv what individuals think.

Since Snowe, Collins, and Spector were mobbed for joining in the *stimulus* votes--the only 3 Reps. to do so--they have moved back to their roots. Pressure does work.

On an MSNBC poll two weeks ago, not scientific but from a leftwing source if there were any, showed only 30% of those who participated thought the Big O deserves an A for performance and 43% think the pres. deserves an F.
