Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

President “Obama has best day as President,” James Carville wrote this past week, citing Obama’s polling numbers, confident appearance, the financial market performance and news that his budget was about to pass.  In addition, the Dow Jones index broke 8,000, closing 20 percent higher than last month.

Based on this information, I should be feeling better about where the nation is moving and looking forward to good days to come.

However, there is that nagging feeling, the same feeling I have when I see bellbottom pants, platform and jelly shoes - that gives me pause.  It’s the feeling that it is impossible – but I have been here before.  Not in specific details – but in general structure, format and mood.

“Déjà vu: Where Facts Meet Fantasy,” (New Scientist, March 25, 2009) defines déjà vu as the “startling, inappropriate and often disturbing sense that history is repeating itself, and impossibly so.  You can’t place where the earlier encounter happened, and it can feel like a premonition or a dream.  Subjective, strange and fleeting.”

From where does this feeling come?  “One particular theory of déjà vu is that it may be a memory process,” notes Psychologist Anne Cleary of Colorado State University in Fort Collins. “Features of the new situation may be familiar from some prior situation.”

What is hauntingly familiar about the current situation?

“Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land,” said Obama in his inaugural speech, “—a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, that the next generation must lower its sights.”

The historical framework was provided by President Carter in his infamous “malaise” speech of 1979, when he said, ”The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will.”

In that same speech, Carter asked Americans to “stop crying and start sweating.”  Obama echoed with “we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off,” in his inaugural speech.

Both times included heightened focus on energy independence, and programs that increased the cost of fuel to the average citizen – Carter’s through quotas, Obama’s through cap-and-trade programs.

However, it’s not the individual policies that provide the familiar framework, it’s the unspoken underlying belief behind them.  The overall message in today’s world is that the average Jack (or Jackie) is not smart enough to make things work, that the people can’t figure things out, so the government will have to take control – of banks, of insurers, of car companies and even, as of last week, of volunteering.

That’s the framework and belief that provides the background to the hauntingly familiar message.  Don’t worry – the government will take care and fix everything.  There are those in the government who are smarter and brighter than the average person and they will “fix things.”

Citizens, told that the world is a complex and confusing place, are sitting back and waiting for the government to solve our problems.  Individual effort and activity are being replaced by government intervention.

Somehow, it just doesn’t ring true to me.

The impossible part?  That in today’s world, America is leading the charge into government intervention.  When Saab recently went to the Swedish government for help, and the government refused to bail them out. The French government rejected a large stimulus bill as fiscally irresponsible.

All of this is occurring while Obama is firing the CEO of General Motors, Rick Wagoner, and Congress is rushing through a $787 billion stimulus bill, and a $3.6 trillion budget.  People are focusing on how to get their share of stimulus money (funded by debt that taxpayers will have to repay) instead of how to create stimulus through individual action.

Americans once believed the words President Reagan’s spoke in his first inaugural address, that “government is not the solution to our problem.”  Now it appears we have momentarily lost our way and, in Reagan’s words, “have been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people.”

Déjà vu – we live in a time that appears startling and impossible.

Doubtless there is an element in the thinking of people like Dumbo, which is exactly as you describe. But i think that part is a sideshow. His motivation is almost purely himself and his drive for power and control. We all have this drive, but in most people it is tempered by social consciousness, and diluted by other desires. But for people like Dumbo, it is an all-consuming passion, to build an empire, to expand his control of his environment. These people can be very dangerous.

Answer the Big O with tea parties
Email the WH and Cong. They cannot know what you think unless you tell them.

Say you are glad Arlen Spector finally remembered he was a Rep. and virtually ditched card-check for another year on his own. If the Big O can't get it during his *honeymoon,* O prob. won't get it.

Say you are glad cap and trade is also dead for at least a year, due to solid Rep. oppostion and many Dems., who found some backbone and rational decision making to defeat the idea at least one time.

Tell Spector, Snowe, and Collins they were nuts to vote for the *stimulus* that contains all Dem. prog. support and no Rep. input. It's a Rep. suicide act.

And tell Mitch OConnell that he's doing a good job of holding the Sen. Reps. together to oppose this nonsense of trilions of debt, almost equal to our entire GNP of $13 trillion.

Gov't only confiscates money and shuffles it around. Gov't doesn't produce wealth and its *stimulus* will not help the ec. It didn't help Japan in a 10-year recession and won't help us.

Stop *healthcare reform.* What you will get in the end is some former student of mine who could never remember to bring a pencil to class and or where his/her locker was deciding if you can see a dr. or if the dr. can prescribe for you.

Go to tea parties: Trenton, NJ, April 15; Phila. Ind. Mall, April 18th. Write Cong. Get active or your freedom will soon be on the inactive list.

Stop the inflated polls
See you at the Tea-Party!

renny,
Please don't use "Big O" when talking about Obama. To those of my generation, there is only one Big O; Oscar Robertson, one of, if not the best all-around basketball player in History. Big O gives a positive nod to Barry, whereas a negative is needed.

BTW, my youngest brother met Robertson last month while he was training at Ft. Campbell, KY. Big O still lives in his hometown of Indianapolis and among other things operates a charity which helps servicemen and their families to cope with the hardships that our military endures for our country.

Then and Now
We have indeed been here before, as the author of this essay says. Thus, we know the final page of this book. This should give us hope.

Do you remember what it was like during and after Watergate? Then, like now, we witnessed the corruption and ineptitude of our rulers. We saw the man behind the curtain and it unnerved us.

Then, like now, we were forced to look inward and face the hard realities. We shunned all things big and "plastic". Now, to be correct, everthing must be green. Then everthing had to say "natural": natural foods, natural shoes even. It was back to nature with Euell Gibbons, who preached the life enhancing benefits of Grape Nuts before he died at 59.

It was all phony then. By the '80s, the natural generation became hedge fund speculators and CEO rapers of the environment.

Today's natural green generation is a more virulent strain of phony hippy. These people are pure evil and vindictive, resentful because their hippy parents gave them too much, expected too little, and stunted their maturity. Now they are adult children and out of place and they're mad at anyone who grew up, produced, and became successful. They mean to take it all away and destroy it.

We can be confident that just like then, they will overreach. Like Carter, Obama and his whizz kids will wreck the economy. His soaring popularity will fall to the earth just as fast once enough people are unemployed and miserable.

And eventually a conservative will be found that has a spine, walks erect, doesn't begin every sentence with a french kiss of Al Sharpton's asssss, won't buckle when confronted by some communist journalist, and is openly proud of his country.

But in the mean time, we'll have to suffer lots of misery and deprivation. Today's population is dumber and lazier than ours was 35 years ago, so it will take longer for them to wake up.

Dear Jackie
I have watched half a dozen or more democrat robots declare the Reagan era of government being the problem, D E A D.
They their renewed government powers will be used to the fullest, fixing everything.
The problem of course is the same for them as that they cite for Reagan backers, but they are too stupid, too arrogant, too drunk with their idea of killing Reagan, to see it.
The republicans are accused of being unable to run something they hate, the government. The democrats aren't bright enough to realize they've been running it, screwing it up for decades, and so there is a reason to hate it with passion.
Democrats preach hatred of business and capitalism, and now they claim they will run business and capitalism.
Just like the accusation that they use against republicans concerning not being able to run a bloated government bureaucratic boondoggle, the democrats won't be running the business empires they hate well, either.
The sad thing is, democrats have screwed up government, and now want to screw up business - since their sick government couldn't provide as much money and life that business has, the very vigor and frankly happiness that capitalism breathes into every person in our society - the democrats have no choice but to try to grab that capitalism, and make it their fix for their failed government. They did this with pushing the home loans, they pushed greedy unions to destroying their employer, now they want to own the car companies, they pushed home loans for liars, now they want to takeover the wall street loan giants they put in motion toward disaster.
Now they want MORE - they always want more - after some idiotic plot - marxist inspired, the destruction ensuing, they demand another chunk - to wreck, then declare Marx correct.

Polling numbers dont amount to Sh_t.
James Carville aka "The Martian", is clearly Insane. For Carville to base his assumption on a Temporary rally in the Stock Market proves this. The Market was clearly oversold and a Bear Market rally was to be expected. Carville is good for a Laugh and not much else...

No one really knows
What Obama’s policies are going to cost them. That’s right “them”.

A lot of people think all the “change” is going to cost someone else, not me.

People watch the news and all they hear are the headlines, then they turn the channel to watch Dancing With the Stars, confident that their Messiah will give them a better world.

No one listens to the details of these new policies. Only when they get their heat bill in two years and discover that Cap & Trade has increased the cost of heating their home by $300 a month will they start to scream “What the hell is going on here” and no doubt will blame the greed of the utility companies.

Typical childish behavior by our nation’s adults: Don’t pay attention until it’s too late.

Oh Wise One
The Honorable Barak Obama,

Sir
I am planning to sell my 1996 Chevrolet sedan. I use it to commute to work but it is starting to cost a lot with minor breakdowns and repairs. Since you know so much about the auto industry and particularly General Motors, I was hoping you could tell me how much I should sell my car for. I know you are a bussy man but it seems that you would like to be able to control our entire economy and I've been told you are a "very smart man." If you are to busy to answer my request perhaps you could deligate this to one of your under secretaries.
With warmest regard
X

All Tea Party Organizers & Participants
Although I'm unable to participate in this most noble cause, I will be with you in my prayers. May reason and prudence be your guiding light.

My heart goes out to all Americans who, either through indifference or ignorance, are unable to see the significance of this event. Yet, I'd venture to say, your complacency would be abruptly shaken if you spent a day living under a totalitarian regime. But, then too, some people just don't care.

It's been five long years in China and I'm often asked, "When are you coming home?" My stock response is, "When I know that I'll not be replacing one elite totalitarian regime – with it's lame socialized medicine and educational system – for a newer one.

Again, I take my hat off to anyone involved in a Tea Party.

A good day
It may have been a good political day for Obama. It remains to be seen whether it was a good day for the U.S. and the world.
Donald W. Bales

When the Skull Speaks, Lift Your Cuffs
I'm afraid that when Carville speaks, I automatically zone out. Old James is still spinning but only the most ardent o lovers will believe that stuff he's pushing. People are hurting so much that any ray of hope will get them back in the market. Apparently the real reason we saw some relief over the last few days was o left town and spent some time offending the Brits a bit more, assisted by Michelle. We should spend part of money and send them to charm and diplomacy school.

James Carville
Every time I see James Carville on TV, I can't help but think of the slimy little snake that kept lying to the Hobbits in the "Lord of The Rings" movie. Carville is a dead ringer for him, and just as slimy.

Why??
So we are told to believe that Obama had his best day because:

1. A democrat flunky said so.
2. He is (allegedly) popular withe public opinion polls conducted mostly by an adoring liberal media, even though his approval rating happens to be dropping.
3. His budget was passed by a congress with lopsided democrat majorities (He would be in real trouble if it didn't pass.).
4. The stock market is up just recently, after going into the tank for 4 months since his election and is still way down.
5. He looks confident. The captain of the Titanic probably looked confident when he set sail too.

What exactly among those reasons gives a person any rational expectation that this fraud has actually done anything right, or is steering the country anywhere other than to an unmitigated disaster?

Anthony
I thought I was the only one seeing Carville that way. That is the exact character he is and was always.

POS for Prez?
Just HOW did we end up with this ignorant POS as our president? I apologize for being blunt but we are SO SCREWED by the Socialist that we are NEVER going to recover!

The USA has become the USSA and we're headed straight down hill from here!

Quixotic
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for President Obama to help you sell your car. He is probably too busy ignoring the woman who is still waiting for him to pay her mortgage. LOL

Why do I increasingly feel like I feel down a rabbit hole starting this past January 20th?

A good day for Obama
But hardly a good day for us.

I'm going to be in front of Comrade Pelosi's office in San Francisco with a tea party on April 15.

I have never gone to a demonstration in my life -- and as a resident of the bay area for most of my 60+ years, I certainly had opportunities.

The statist, socialist, leftist Democrats are trying to end the experiment in Democracy that's held on for the past 200+ years. They may just win -- but I won't go out without a fight.

I'm with you chas
Even if, the next president is the equivalent of Ronald Reagan. We'll still be so socialist and so in debt, it won't make much difference. As if politicians will ever give up power.
The weapon of our destruction is our own constitution. And defined through the eyes of Obama, Pelosi, and Reed the constitution is the stick that will beat us ugly.
When I think of history repeating. I think Cilvil War, the Romans, ancient Greek Republics, the US, French, and Russian revolutions.
The government is currently so one sided. It's like roller skating and only moving one leg. We just circle left. Let's not circle right. Let's move forward.

A good day for Obama
will be the day he adopts Jim Baker's book title, "I Was Wrong."

I wouldn't waste any money betting on this one. His arrogance will certainly set world records. Humility is not part of his vocabulary.

There are a lot of embarrassing days ahead for young Barry. As Republicans begin their comeback with special election victories in Georgia and New York (in Democratic districts), Democrats would be wise to tone down the bravado. It doesn't play well in Peoria.

It will be interesting to see if Barry can top ex-Prez Bill in his ability to spin bad news. Or bury it.

Liberal agenda
Of course B-HO is leading us as fast as he can to communism,as he said he would, with his spreading the wealth comments and his cap and trade scam. His intention is to force everyone in America into bankruptsy and into depending on the government for day to day living, his worshipers view this as an ideal situation and a heaven on earth. He wishes to remain in power as long as he can still print money, he dosent care that he is putting our kids into debt for the rest of their lives and their kids lives after all he is not American anyway. YOU KNOW IF HE WAS AMERICAN HE COULD NOT WAIT TO SHOW HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE

The market broke 8,000...
for the 3rd time. Once on the way up, once on the way down, and now again on the way up. They say the 3rd time is the charm (or is the 4th time the curse?).

Cushman
"the average Jack (or Jackie) is not smart enough to make things work, that the people can’t figure things "

***
Browsing through Town Hall through the
election months, I learned that the lazy dumbbells who have no job are the only ones who are not smart enough to make things work.

Of course, as more and more people are out of
work I am hearing less and less of this,
though it is still there.

It isn't that people aren't smart enough, if
you mean "smart" per se. The fact of the
matter is that probably the vast majority
of people in the United States don't know
what is going on in our financial institutions
or how to change things for the better. Had
our present economic situation not happened,
how long would it have taken for the issue
of obscene salaries, benefits, and other
payouts to be addressed. It would have taken
forever. And while we may not have liked it,
we probably don't put two and two together
that says not only is that not fair - period -
but it is not fair to the workers or the
stockholders, both of whom were taking
back seats here.

We rely on our government to oversee these
things. The problem is that those agencies
that were supposed to do the overseeing were
in bed with the people who were ripping us off.

If you want to check out and see who is smart
around here check out people like Roland & his post under "liberal agenda."
you must then wonder if we are beyond being helped.

Deja Vu All Over Again
What is worse this time around is that we now have a president who is not even loyal to this nation, and in fact, has been over in Europe for the past week bashing the USA as the Evil Empire. It is not enough that he bashed Bush and Republicans throughout his campaign for president, he has continued to do so since taking office. This may be expected as sleazy politics as usual, which Liberals are famous for, but to have the President of the USA go to foreign nations and join the chorus of saying GD the United States is despicable and ought to be cause to charge this Anti-American President Barack Hussein Obama with treason.

Ropati
I think you are a little early with the victory
dance. I don't think you realize just how popular Obama is. Not on Fox News to be sure, but people who are truly in the know, ignore
Fox News, and for good reason.

Obama is a Walking Disaster
Obama is a walking, teleprompter reading idiot who is making a mockery of the presidency and of this nation.

Before going to Europe to bash America, he was doing all he could here to spread hate and dissent. This fool will do anything to gain power, and the Obama-Trons who come on this site are mindless idiots who, for the most part, are the ones waiting for Obama to re-distribute monies to them that somebody else earned.

Well, I have news for you Obama Deadbeats, tens of millions of Americans are already sick of this wannabe Tyrant, and by the time this Impostors 4 years are up, he will be run out of this country on a rail. Mark my words. Americans are not sitting back idly and waiting for this communist to turn this country into a Fascist nation. Up to this point, everything that he and this treasonous congress have done, has been Fascist. We will not allow this nonsense to go much further. There are some decent, patriotic members of congress who have got Obama's Number, and are at work now to stop this Narcissitic, maniacal communist.

Obama is a Traitor & Impostor
Hey, I read this and she is right on, but the difference is this: At least we know that Jimmy was born in Georgia, USA, and that he was as naive as a newborn calf, but nobody questioned his Patriotism and love for this country. You cannot say this for Obama, a Kenyan-born citizen, who has bashed this country and courted Communism all his life. He needs to be tried for treason after the spectacle he displayed in Europe.
