Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This week marks the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Lincoln, one of our most revered presidents, was born in rural Kentucky and raised in Illinois. He is often held up as an example of how individual effort determines a person’s course in life.

While many people in his time might have viewed the education that he embraced as a waste of time, Lincoln spent every possible minute reading books. There are stories of how he would walk for hours to borrow or return a book. Lincoln worked constantly. His law partner, William H. Herndon, noted in “Life of Lincoln” that “his ambition was a little engine that knew no rest.” Sustained individual effort, always working, is a far cry from where we are today.

In his New York Times op-ed column “Failure to Rise,” Paul Krugman writes “America just isn’t rising to the greatest economic challenge in 70 years.” Krugman’s point is that “$800 billion, while it sounds like a lot of money, isn’t nearly enough.” Krugman wants more government intervention. He calls for more, more, more, from Washington, and concludes with a warning, “There’s still time to turn this around. But Mr. Obama has to be stronger looking forward. Otherwise, the verdict on this crisis might be that no, we can’t.”

His approach put responsibility for the economy into the lap of the government. From his perspective, it appears as if the government has total control, and what it does will, in the end, determine what happens. If we believed this, all individual effort would stop, we would no longer try to improve ourselves and our nation would suffer from what Dr. Martin Seligman, the Director of the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, calls “learned helplessness.”

In his New York Times op-ed column “The Worst-Case Scenario,” David Brooks takes the opposite tack and lays out how the government’s response to the current situation might be viewed years from now: “Far from easing uncertainty, the exploding deficits led to more fear. The U.S. could not afford to respond to new emergencies, like hurricanes or foreign crises. Other nations sensed American overextension. Foreign debt-holders grew nervous. Interest rates rose. Congress indulged its worst instincts, erecting trade barriers, propping up doomed companies. Scholars began to talk about the American Disease, akin to the British Disease of the 1970s.”

This past week’s conversations have reflected the growing belief among conservatives that the Obama administration’s policies are moving us toward a period of nationalism and government control that at some point will leave us looking like the British did more than three decades ago.

So what might be the best-case scenario?

This past week, I was e-mailed a link to a video clip of Senator Charles Schumer, Democrat from New York. “And let me say this to all of the chattering class, that so much focuses on those little, tiny, yes porky amendments, the American People really don’t care,” he said during a debate on the stimulus bill.

My son Robert, who was standing by the computer and overheard Schumer, corrected him with “The American people DO care.” If a seven-year-old understands that the American people care, well then there is hope.

The best-case scenario is one in which Americans decide that they do care, that they are optimistic, that they can change their lives, try something different and create their own future. This would require they understand how current policies would affect the future and act to stop them – moving rapidly to embrace an economy based on change, optimism and personal responsibility rather than waiting for the crushing corset of nationalism to further squeeze the economy, wreaking more havoc.

My mother told me yesterday that her ladies investment club members grappled with how to respond to the uncertainty. The members were trying to determine whether to continue to make monthly contributions to their investment fund or to stop payments until some time in the future, when the crisis has eased. She recommended they continue. “Right now,” she told them, “someone who has been laid off of work is in their basement inventing the next big thing. I believe in the American people.”

My hope is that there are lots of people in their basements inventing, and not on their computers answering offers to help them get their portion of the stimulus package.

The cure for the British disease of the 1970’s was Margaret Thatcher. “We want to work with the grain of human nature, helping people to help themselves – and others,” noted the 1979 British Conservative Manifesto. “This is the way to restore that self reliance and self confidence which are the basis for personal responsibility and national success.”

If we really want to honor the great presidents of our nation, let’s each of us emulate them by becoming little individual engines that know no rest, working toward personal responsibility and national success.

Sounds good
But the problem here is that the leadership in this country (Gov and Business, DEM and GOP) is terrible.

Having faith in the American people is fine, and we've been in very dire straits before and managed to pull out. That will continue to happen until the one time when it doesn't.

Is this that time? Who knows. The one thing I'm absolutely sure of here is that no one, not business leaders or gov't, has any real idea of how this will play out. They're floundering around, desperately trying to delay the inevitable with voodoo solutions that seem to amount to a tendency to ingest more of the "hair of the dog".

Based on what we've seen so far, both in the "how we got here" and the "what are we going to do about it" categories, I don't think that over optimism, or platitudes about faith in the American people, are going to get us far.

We need a return to true leadership in this country, and unfortunately, that means we need a populace that demands that, and insists on it at voting time. We also need an actual definition of leadership, and the principles true leadership would uphold, and we're very far away from that.

I don't see that now, maybe we will once things get bad enough. Bad times seem to encourage a more serious mindset, and we have a desperate need for that.

The only way
The only way things are going to change in DC is that all of the current crooks and liars are voted out and put a new set in.

Then again, I think I'd rather see the country run by my Grandmother's sewing circle than these slimy, lying SOBs. At least these old ladies can balance their checkbooks and take care of the bills without going so far beyond their means that they can't even see the beginning.

The mindset
of arrogant bast***s like Schumer has been apparent, but to hear an actual quote that the American people don't care about pork spending is infuriating and depressing. Because he is so right. He, and the huge majority of politicians are elected by people who are hoping to get some share of govt largesse and they find it quite reasonable to hire crooks if they only spread the gravy. As has beennoted, so long as those who abuse office are re-elected, the abuse will expand. Throw the rascals out.

Keep Your Chins Up
I am very optimistic about the future, even now with the communists in power. Have we no faith in the laws of nature and the behavior or man? Cheer up, folks. Last November was merely a temporary setback. We will be back in power because we were meant to rule.

The Bush regieme was an abnormality. He wasn't a conservative. He was an incompetent. Our mistake was supporting him and that GOP who were revealed to be sellouts. They've been flushed out like any human waste.

We know how our economy is going to go. We've been here before. This time it will be catastrophic and will bring terrible civil unrest and disorder on the nation.

Our country will descend into a war by race, class and partisanship. The people will see the folly of communism and it will want an end to this Weimar Republic. We know that one of us will emerge as victor because the people want security. Only we know how to ensure that.

And the people will be most resentful when they see the results of this afterbirth of a bailout. When they see those who never work, driving around in Cadillac Escalades while they bus to three jobs to keep those parasites well feed and stocked with 40 ounce malt liquors, they'll finally have enough. They'll demand real change.

We've been through 1976 when that GOP was trounced and through 1980 when we had to rescue the country because the prime rate was 18% and unemployment was at 12%.

As much as the country seems to love their new secular potentate, they'll turn on him just as quick when the results of the raid on our treasury falls on them. He'll be like last week's American Idol winner - forgotten.

Keep your chins up, everyone and have a nice day.

Better Than Average, Cushman
Not much here though but considerably better than ordinary Gingrich-Cushman "me" "I" "us" "my" advice from ????????. Ghost writer involved here? Giving credit to a seven year old is a bit silly -- heard it from older people. First or second grade. Move away from using you and your family as examples. It is us, not you, who suffers most from this economy since I sense that you are in a position to get through any personal economical problems without too much trouble. for one thing, you might write about the disastrous effect of the NAFTA, et al, agreements hoisted by the NEWT as being the way to globalism. 32 consecutive years of trade imbalance.

ATMs vs. PhDs
I think we're in for a long period of personal and country depression. There are too many citizens who are undereducated and some outright illiterates. The Democrat/liberals used them as shock troops to gain power.

But it goes back to when the secular hippies from the Sixties marched through our schools and universities and converted them to propaganda institutes for socialism.

Our educational leaders should have been teaching how capitalism works beginning in high school. Money management courses should have been required courses for every high school student instead of tolerance for every sexual proclivity.

Sadly, Americans are discovering that economics rules, not political correctness.

How Bad and How Fast Can It Get?
I remember at U.C. Riverside back in 1970 getting drunk and saying what I really thought about the United States, our vicious imperialism, and the destruction we were bringing on ourselves by our fascist government, and capitalist oppression. I was pretty radical.

It didn't happen, for which I'm grateful. God showed his mercy to me and to this nation. I don't think we can presume on his mercy any longer. But I do believe that his prescription for the healing of a nation still stands.

2 Chronicles 7:14 "Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land."

i heard this on local news concerning education: "we need to start teaching children in schools about using charge cards and borrowing money".
*those are not exact words but correct in meaning!

Perhaps schools should spend a little less time explaing to "Johnny & Jane" why they can't say words like "Jesus & God".

Slight Error
Lincoln was born in Kentucky, raised in Indiana, then they moved to Illinois. Once the family was settled he went out on his own.

PISTOL FL

.....Maybe Slimey Chuck-U Schumer and his A-hole buddy in the House, Barney the Dancing Queen have been screwing the voters for so long that they are beginning to think that we like it .....COLOSSUS

JD:
It is great what you have said; however, there are three things you have not addressed. First, our educational system has prepared brainwashed students who are incapable of looking at both sides of an argument. Second, we have created a huge class of people who expect the government to give them whatever they need, with nothing in return (our work ethic has been destroyed). Third, and the most important, our morals have been declining for years and negative choices no longer carry consequences; instead, we say they have a right to do whatever they want. The government, like the typical citizen, wants to spend and spend, but where does the money come from? Most Americans carry debts and pay for them by creating more debt, and the government is doing the same thing. We the people only see what is in it for me, not what is happening to our nation, but I hope we wake up to what is happening. Perhaps, runaway inflation and the destruction of our economy will restore us back to our original roots where plasma televisions, homes we can't afford, and immoral behavior will be replaced with hard work, raising a family, and God, the ingredients that made America so different and successful from other nations.

how civilisations just disappeared
JD HANDSOM SON in OH: "The Bush regieme was an abnormality. He wasn't a conservative. He was an incompetent. Our mistake was supporting him and that GOP who were revealed to be sellouts. They've been flushed out like any human waste."

what was the alternative then?

and this time McC was the alternative?

neither said no to "When they see those who never work, driving around in Cadillac Escalades while they bus to three jobs to keep those parasites well feed and stocked..."

sadly, as you say, we need a catastrophe to bring us back to where we were 200 hundred years ago.

The Game
of Monoply has changed it's rules. Now the players can buy lots on credit. HHMMM. what does that teach kids?

Cut Cut Cut
Until we cut all the government agencies not specifically allowed in the Constitution and restore manufacturing as the underpinning of our economy, our economy will remain in the toilet.

Lincoln in Indiana
Lincoln was raised in Indiana, not Illinois. His family moved there when he was seven and he left for Illinois at the age of twenty-one.

Best Case Scenario
A best case scenario will be a relatively short civil war looming in the not so distant horizon.
BO will get his wishful thinking come true: like Lincoln, he too will preside during a civil war of secession.
Worst case scenario: "malaise" without end in sight.

German saying : "Besser ein Ende mit Schrecken als ein Schrecken ohne Ende"
meaning: "Better to have an ending with trauma than trauma without end"...sort of.

Egon
Best case? Good question. Short sharp civil war with nobody hurt except lawyers. Good start. Clear the benches at the Supreme court, WH and Congress. Dismantle ALL federal agencies except the military, return all tax power to the states except excise and duties. Sell the facilities of the IRS, NIH, FDA etc to the highest bidder and contract out (after some delay) any useful function that is not being performed. Re-instate the old voting standards, except for gender and racial barriers. What a pleasant fantasy.

With Friends Like Feinstein, Who Needs..
Sen. Dianne Feinstein has exposed a Pakistani partnership on Predator launches that the previous administration tried to keep quiet. Her offhand remark may put the entire program in jeopardy:

A senior U.S. lawmaker said Thursday that unmanned CIA Predator aircraft operating in Pakistan are flown from an airbase inside that country, a revelation likely to embarrass the Pakistani government and complicate its counterterrorism collaboration with the United States.

The disclosure by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, marked the first time a U.S. official had publicly commented on where the Predator aircraft patrolling Pakistan take off and land.

At a hearing, Feinstein expressed surprise at Pakistani opposition to the ongoing campaign of Predator-launched CIA missile strikes against Al Qaeda targets along Pakistan’s northwest border.

“As I understand it, these are flown out of a Pakistani base,” she said of the planes.
Until now, that was a closely guarded secret. The drone attacks are incredibly unpopular among the Pakistani public, and the US didn’t want to undermine the current, democratically-elected government in Islamabad. They wanted to give the Yousef Gilani government deniability on their cooperation with the American military in order to keep our options for attack open.

This exposure will cause much greater damage. The Pakistani public will almost certainly demand an end to these Predator flights, which have been highly successful at decimating terrorist leadership in inaccessible areas of the Pakistani frontier. This could allow our enemies breathing room to rebuild their networks in the region, and put us on a collision course with Islamabad on our efforts to fight them. At the very least, Feinstein has just complicated the diplomatic situation for Barack Obama by an order of magnitude.

And, Obama and the Democrats called Rush a traitor for hoping that socialism fails.

What movtivates Igor Krugman ...
For people like Krugman, who have never had any real responsibility for anything except giving their opinion, the big government world has many satisfying aspects. A big government populated with "brainy" people who feel that they are so much smarter than the rest of us, and need to make decisions for us so we don't make stupid mistakes is a perfect environment for Mr. Krugman.
