Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Elevator conversations can be intriguing – sometimes they are extreme in nature, either light or profound.  Yesterday’s was profound.

The elevator stopped on the fourth floor, where I was waiting.  There were two occupants when I got in to go to the lobby.  A man who, based on his attire and the large number of keys hanging off his belt, was the maintenance man, he was talking with a lady, whom he appeared to know.

My walk was slower than normal, my left foot hurt and it took me a few extra moments to cross over the elevator threshold.   I had walked 23 miles the day before and was feeling the effects.

As I got on, the man said, “Any day I wake up is a good day, it does not matter what comes along. I can handle it, as long as I wake up.”  I looked over and nodded my head in agreement.

The lady did not seem persuaded, so he continued, “I just can’t imagine not waking up.”

This conversation reminded me that I might need to step back and reframe where I am and why I should be grateful.

I don't know about you, but I shuffle a bit first thing in the morning when I get up.  However, I am glad that most mornings, after a few minutes, I loosen up and feel better.  Not everyone feels this way.

Two decades ago, my sister Kathy was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.  Just a few years ago, she had days when she could not get out of bed unaided, she walked with a limp, and had trouble moving her fingers.  Once, while visiting my family, I had to close the back of my car because she could not raise her arms high enough to close it.

But, sometimes assisted by researchers, scientists and doctors, miracles happen.  Kathy is now on a new medicine that has transformed her life.  With determination, physical therapy and constant work, she is in great shape and has regained full range of movement in her arms.  Last time she was here, she closed the back gate of my car.  That’s improvement!

Last year, we walked the Athens, Greece marathon, the original marathon, with three other team members.  We created a team, “America to Anywhere for Arthritis,” and raised almost $40,000 for the Arthritis Foundation.

Not willing to rest on our laurels (or anything else), we established a goal of $60,000 and seven team members for 2008.  We have recruited all seven members, and we have raised more than $57,000 so far this year for the Arthritis Foundation.

While this has been an exceptional year for the team, it has been a tough year of training for me.  I broke my left little toe on Memorial Day weekend walking on the beach.  Once my toe recovered, the fascia in my left foot ripped during hip-hop class.

Together, these injuries kept me off the road for 10 weeks.  On-road training resumed a month ago. My last long training walk – the one before my elevator epiphany -- has just been completed.

It took me almost seven hours to complete the 23 miles.  I started when my children went to school, and I finished back at the house 15 minutes before they returned.  At mile 12, my left foot began to hurt.  Walking through the pain led me to contemplate what it must be like for those, like my sister, who walk through pain every day due to arthritis.  I thought about stopping, but I decided to walk on.  My gait changed as I tried to compensate, my stride shortened and I began to hitch a bit.

I made it through the 23 miles.  Two days later my foot still hurts, but the icing, ibuprofen and rest are helping.

The reason this is important and relevant?  There are 46 million Americans with arthritis, and it is the nation's leading cause of disability, affecting one in five adults and nearly 300,000 children.  There are more than100 types of arthritis and three out of five people with arthritis are under the age of 65.  Arthritis affects individuals and their quality of life, and it costs America more than $128 billion annually.

What have I learned so far through this experience?  That every day I wake up -- and can walk -- is indeed a good day.

A variation
I once heard a slightly different rendition of the custodian's theme, and it has stuck with me for years: "Let me tell you about the worst day of my life. Compared with the alternative, it was wonderful."

I'm happy for your sister and your family, but you're right -- there is still much to be done in the fight against arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. Carry on the good work. And keep that positive attitude. It's at least as efficacious as anything in the medicine cabinet.

Another "I" and "Me"
It is all about "me" in every article posted by the relative of Newt Gingrich, the fabulous guy that pushed NAFTA, globalism, open borders, free trade (32 consecutive years of deficit trade), etc., -- and yet her foot hurt. Jackie, did I ever tell you that every day I wake up still hurting from arthritis. Well, I do not know of a single person who would like to hear that either. Tell it to your kids.

TeeHall
I feel sorry for you. What a miserable individual you must be. I truly think (and I know, you don't care what I think) that someone like Gingrich could deliver to you the fountain of youth and a million dollars and you'd find fault with it.

In a political atmosphere as we have currently, an article like this 'should' provide everyone with some perspective. Some commonality. Some sense of our shared humanity.

For everyone but ideologues like you, I guess.

Sad, really.

Vertical, Mobile and Aware...
and, three out of three ain't bad.

Those are my criteria for a good day. I share them with others to try to get a smile or laugh from someone every day.

I cannot imagine getting through the day being angry and snide, as TeeHall is above. I wonder if he/she reads "every article posted by the relative of Newt Gingrich" just to sustain his/her anger. If so, perhaps he/she needs to "get a life".

Too bad. So sad.

This is essentially the same slap you posted last week, and repetition hasn't improved it. Not many of us can write authoritatively about anything _except_ ourselves and what we know. You're no exception. In a short composition expressing your personal disdain for Mrs. Cushman's use of personal topics, you use the pronoun _I_ three times. Wake up and smell the irony.

Medical innovation
Kathy is now on a new medicine that has transformed her life. Well, watch the development of new meds slow under President Barry Obama's national healthcare plan (yes, it will be coming).

Enjoy, sheeple.

I love her "I" and "Me"

Yes Newt is fabulous.

You can be sure that if you wrote about "I" and "Me", no one would pay you for that, and no real human would ever read it. There are plenty of columnists on TH, and elsewhere, that I would not read.

What would you say if Dr. Sowell did not write about economics, if George Will didn’t write about baseball, John McCain and OBamBam did not write about politics, and on and on?

That is her job, you idiot, just like you think it is your job to rant and rave about your ignorance and hate each Sunday Morning.

Your hateful comment about Jackie is as expected from a sickie from the left.

For a better day for all of us, next Sunday, drop dead - actually, not figuratively.

As for Newt, if you had ever read the constitution you would know that Newt balanced the Federal budget, cleaned up welfare, and except for the hypocrisy of the Demorats (who have had sexual problems for centuries) Newt would be our next President, as he should be.

McCain can win on the economy issue!

The Economy is what most people are concerned about. McCain can win on the economy if we promote a grass roots effort that will get the country angry at the real culprits. If Republicans send out emails like I did to everyone on my email address list, then McCain could win! Elected public officials will only accept emails from their constituents.

Therefore I have access to only a few Republican politicians. If enough people who receive this email will email their Republican representatives at every level from local to the president and every conservative talk show host then America will get the message.

This was the message;

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I apologize for sending this unsolicited email, but I feel every American would like to know who caused our financial collapse which is causing your 401k and your home value to sink in value. We have been betrayed, not by the obvious greed of the banks, but by our congressmen who caused this to happen.

Let’s not put the fox in charge of the hen house. Please view all six sections of the very clearly produced video at the following link.

http://www.teleprompterpresident.com/2008/10/fnc-fbn-inves- 6.html

The site can also be googled by the phrase, telelprompter saving our economy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You could also make available down-loadable posters and handouts which volunteers could hand out at supermarkets.

Thanks,

Bob Bryant

The economy issue is
what is hurting McCain because he is associated with Bush and Obama and all the Democrats blame Bush for the economic problems we are facing today. Let's just hope that America wakes up to Obama's leftist illuminati lies before it's too late.
