Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Two recently released reports have left me a bit confused.

The reason for my confusion, one study says more Americans than ever are fat, and the other study says that being fat may not determine disease risks.

The first study, by the Trust for America’s Health, was called  “F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America 2008” and was released August 19.

“F as in Fat” uses data from the federal government’s Behavioral Risk Factor Survellance System, and categorizes people based on Body Mass Index.  A BMI for someone of normal weight is less than 25, overweight from 25 to 30 and obese is 30 or over.

Body Mass index is calculated as: [weight in pounds/ (height in inches X height in inches)] X 703

For a 5’ 8” person, normal weight is up to 163 lbs, overweight 164-190 lbs, obese 197 lbs or more.

The “F as in Fat” report notes that, “Adult obesity rates have doubled since 1980, from 15 percent to 30 percent. Two-thirds of adults are now either overweight or obese. Childhood obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1980, from 6.5 percent to 16.3 percent.”

It concludes that a national strategy should be created to address the obesity epidemic, and calls for “a comprehensive, realistic plan that involves every agency of the federal government, state and local governments, businesses, communities, schools, families, and individuals.  It must outline clear roles and responsibilities and demand accountability.  Our leaders should challenge the entire nation to take responsibility and do their part to help improve our nation’s health.”

But two days, later, the Archives of Internal Medicine published “The Obese without Cardiometabolic Risk Factor Clustering and the Normal Weight with Cardiometabolic Risk Factor Clustering,” (Dr. Rachel Wildman, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York).

The title may be a mouthful, but the study itself was simple. In it, 5,440 participants were divided into categories based on their BMI and then tested for six indicators of cardiometabolic health. The basis for this test was the “recognition that the disease risks associated with obesity may not be uniform.”

The results?  “Among U.S. adults 20 years and older, 23.5 percent (approximately 16.3 million adults) of normal-weight adults were metabolically abnormal, whereas 51.3 percent (approximately 35.9 million adults) of overweight adults and 31.7 percent (approximately 19.5 million adults) of obese adults were metabolically healthy.”  What does this mean?  That BMI alone does not determine a person’s health.

So what else determines health?  The controllable item that affected cardiometabolic health was the level of physical activity.

The obesity “epidemic” has been in the news for years - but is this the right focus?  Maybe not. “There is too much emphasis on weight and not nearly enough on physical activity,” said Dr. Steven Blair, an authority on the health benefits of exercise at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.  “People should focus on healthful behaviors, 30 minutes of activity per day, eight to 10 servings of fruit/vegetables, focus on whole grains, restrict highly processed foods.”

Asked if the “F as in Fat” report is sending the wrong message, Blair responded that “another report hyping the obesity epidemic and how awful it is will not move us very far towards a solution.  In my opinion there is too much emphasis on soda, snacks, fast foods, etc; when the evidence that these things are important causes of the problem is lacking.

Blair recommends we “focus on objective measures of activity and fitness, and on healthful diets.  Let the focus be on healthful behaviors rather than weight.”

So here is an idea that might seem radical: instead of measuring what we don’t want (obesity), how about focusing on what we do want? HEALTH!

My first pass at an acronym HEALTH -- Healthy Eating Active Learning Targeting Humans -- might not be the best, but it underscores that health is a process, not a destination, achieved through activities that provide impact over time.

“F is for Fat” recommended a national strategy involving all government agencies.  I cannot imagine any organization that includes every agency of federal, state and local governments would be effective.  What I can imagine is the president, national and state leaders using the “bully pulpit” to focus on the right behaviors: healthy eating and activity.

Instead of just talking about policy, we should try something new.  For instance, the Republican Governors Association and the Democratic Governors Association could challenge states to see which could increase by the greatest amount the average activity per resident.

If it is true that a clear goal creates a better, clearer path to success, then let us clearly define the goal - Health, and move to a behavior that makes sense - Activity.

How about measuring A for Active?

Two words
Who cares?

I'm a social conservative: a classic disciplinarian, get-the-government-to-kick-butt type. But government involvement in this arena is laughable. No element of morality or even virtue is at stake. The dangerous thing about the left wing when it comes to health is that they realize that health education can be divided into classifying activity as "healthy" or "unhealthy" which they use as proxies for "right" and "wrong." They then move beyond the physical to the mental, designating every hedonistic pursuit that falls within their purview "healthy" (and thus right), and every pursuit that falls outside their ideology as "unhealthy" (and thus wrong).

Any ideological system that is given such free reign of arbitrary selection on the judgment of right and wrong unchecked by reason deserves to perish.

Natural Approach
Personal health should be a personal matter. The problem today is that consumers are not told the truth about our food supply and the FDA facilitates the industry lies. They can not make informed decisions. They don't have the education to understand science and the manufacturers aren't about to tell anything they aren't required by law to tell.

1. Stop eating partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.
2. Stop eating sugar substitutes.
3. Stop eating MSG (often hidden on the label as "flavoring").
4. Cut back drastically on sugar and white flour.
5. Cut back drastically on vegetable oils.
6. Start drinking real milk.
7. Start eating minimally processed foods.

Your food should be grown and prepared and enjoyed by people who actually care about you.

I don't see anywhere the government could help other than getting out of the way.

Obesity
As a retired college Biology prof I predicted this 20 years ago...the problem is parents who buy the food... and the gov-ment should do no more than inform-advise...but they are never satisfied with that...and liberalism-PC prevents quality PhyEd which should be in all grades 6-12 daily...its left to insurance companies to slap extra fees onto the obese and employees go to the company nurse 2x a year. Modern liberalism first takes respect and shame from a culture..then common sense...so here we are!

Well.....let's see...
The author is absolutely correct from a health standpoint...and it should be obvious to all....just walk around your town sometime and really notice what you see.....many people are walking blobs.....it's unbelievable....!

Keep pointing it out Ms. Cushman.....govmint may not be the answer, but your observations are right on spot.....

dont worry mccains go t it
do not worry too much about this so called fat epedemic. mccain, has it spotted and has inferred that he wil do something about it,. in a speech back in march or april. where mccain told us of the america he envisioned at the end of his first term, he said that one of his goals was to see the weight of americans go down and that at that time americans would be less fat then when he started. he hasnt announced how he plans to perform this without t more government al regulations about what we can eat and what we cant. but im sure he will do it at his aceptance speech. he is keeping his ideas about it wondefully secret up until now.
so no worry. just keep eating what you are aeating and qwell see what he has in stroe for us.

What we should be asking is why
our government is wasting tax dollars on the latest PC health boondoggle. I don't recall seeing "body-mass index" in my copy of the Constitution, or "activity index either.

Don't Feed The Defeatocons
Electing Obama-Biden would be a serious mistake and blow for true conservatives. McCain may not be the perfect conservative, but at least he is conservative. Obama is anything but. Do not make the mistake of thinking conservatives win by losing. They only lose by losing.

Sum Up The First Five
5 comments so far? The website must have been down for 7 hours. Another from Jackie Gingrich, relative of the Newt, the CFR and global advocate. Jackie, are you aware that we are in the center of a fierce political race, racism, wars in Afghanistan, Darfur, Iraq, Georgia, and elsewhere, cost of oil, near-hurricane and flooding, Biden, government intervention into everything and screwing it up, credit card crisis, mortgage debt, bank failings, Freddie and Fannie, inflated dollar, 32 years of deficit trading, etc.? Hey Townhall, do you think we are attracted to TH, in part, because of Jackie's articles, her relationship to the Newt, or just looking for parental advice - that we yearn for until next Sunday?

This is pandering!
Why is Townhall carrying this womans column? It's embarrasing. She has nothing to say. It's the kind of insight that should be left to the local community newspapers. Just peruse her archive and look at the topics; Disneyworld, motherhood, vegetable gardening? I'm sure she is a very nice person, but if her last name was Smith or Jones, would Townhall be posting these pieces?

Oh Please STOP!!
We don't need any government nanny challenging ANYTHING!
Especially what we eat and what we do.
Just look after yourself nutcase.

Obesity
That is not a government problem . It is only a problem when doctors say it is and they want to involve the government so they can be sure their office is full and so are their pockets , do you all not get it . With out patients they have no money coming in and they can't help the government control you and yours . They want to see you every month at a rate of pay of $100.00 to as much as $ 400.00 and that depends on what they specialize in . That is why health care is out of control . Not what the ordinary person is doing but what the doctors want you to believe is wrong or preventive health care. If its not broken don't fix it . Educate people about doctors and the medicines that they give you that cause so many other thing that you didn't have , like cancer , heart disease , ulcers , liver being destroyed , kidneys shall we go on and on . GET A GRIP!!!!

How about NOT?
Let's not challenge government to do anything, especially what is thought good for "us". You take care of your body and I'll take care of mine.

F is for flunkie
The last thing we need is another leftocon telling us that the problem is that every agency of government is involved in personal health decisions, and that the solution is that only some agencies run the show and others can bully us from the pulpit.

Here's a radical idea: Instead of focusing on what we don't want (a nanny state), how about we focus on what we do want: Freedom.
