July 4th - More Than a Day - A Way of Life

Independence Day, July 4th, occurs this week. It is easy, 232 years after the event, to focus on the day the document was signed rather than on the importance of the document or the process it took to create the United States of America. The Declaration of Independence provided a vision of the desired outcome - a new nation, but meeting that vision required time, work, and sacrifice by its citizens.

The French and Indian War ceased in 1763. The British, burdened with debt, taxed the colonists (without their say) to help pay off the debt and the cost of maintaining troops in the colonies. Many colonists did not approve of the British taxes and friction grew between American colonists and the British.

A confrontation between a British sentry and colonist led to the Boston Massacre in 1770. Five colonists died. The news of this incident spread rapidly. Paul Revere, later know for his middle-of-the-night horseback ride, created an engraving of the incident that soon circulated throughout the colonies.

The friction between the British and the American colonist continued. To protest a new British tea tax, colonists organized the Boston Tea Party in 1773. No one was killed, but goods worth more than $1 million in today’s dollars were destroyed.

The American Revolution officially began with the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. When the British army and the Minutemen met at Lexington, an initial standoff ended when a shot was fired. It soon came to be known as the “shot heard ‘round the world.” The American Revolutionary War had officially begun.

The Second Continental Congress voted on June 7, 1776 for a resolution stating “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States.” Thomas Jefferson was tasked with writing this “Declaration of Independence.” He finished a draft within three weeks and, after a few revisions, Congress adopted it on July 4, 1776.

It says, in part:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,”

This document is incredibly important because it acknowledges that the Creator gives rights to men, who then loan the rights to the Government. In this model, the Creator comes first, then man and then the Government that man created.

The Declaration of Independence proclaims that life and liberty are the unalienable gifts of God – natural rights – which no person or government can rightfully take away. It affirms that the purpose of government is to protect these God-given rights, and that government is subservient to the people. The people, not the government, hold the power. Government derives its powers from the consent of the governed (the people). Our Declaration reduced the status of government from the master of people (as in English rule) to that of the servant of the people.

July 4, the day the document was signed, is the day we celebrate as Independence Day. However, at this point, we were far from independent.

The American Revolutionary War raged on for more than five more years. British General Charles Cornwallis formally surrendered at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. But the cost of the war had bankrupted the Congress. Many soldiers had fought for more than six years without pay. While we were an independent nation, it was unclear how long we would remain that way.

The inauguration of George Washington as the first president of the United States occurred on April 30, 1789, and signaled a move toward order and stability: our freedom had been declared and won, our Constitution adopted and our president elected and in office.

The work for a free country continues today. While celebrating the birth of our nation’s Independence on July 4th, we also celebrate our growth, trials and triumphs.

July 4th should be more than a simple celebration, but a time to reflect on the importance and responsibility of citizens of a nation who “hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Our rights come from God, to be loaned to the government - let us pay thanks to God for these rights while we remind the government that these rights are only loaned to them by the people. They govern only by the consent of the governed.

Obama - McCain Debate on July 4th
Didn't I hear somewhere that one of the few debates scheduled between John McCain and Obama will be on July 4th?

That would be important and interesting to watch. Obama has been too busy "campaigning" to debate one-on-one with McCain, just like he refused to debate Hillary.

The media should be demanding more debates on behalf of the American people who have a right to know the caliber of the man we are expected to place the supreme power of the POTUS.

Obama wants us to just hand it to him after a few speeches. Obama is afraid to debate head-on because he knows John McCain would spank him.

Rights are to be secured, not loaned...
I think, for the most part, that Mrs. Cushman is on point with her article. I do however, disagree with a point or two.

In this article she states, "...that the Creator gives rights to men, who then loan the rights to the Government." I do not believe that the Founding Fathers intended to 'loan' their God-given rights to anyone. I believe that they understood the principle that governments are instituted by God to preserve and protect the rights He gives to mankind. There is a huge difference. "Loan" would intimate that we give control of our rights to the government. The Declaration of Independence makes no such statement. It says, as she rightfully quoted, "...That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men..." a statement which I would respectfully submit states the purpose of Government, but in no ways turns our God-given rights over to one.

Perhaps a small point of disagreement, I don't know. But if those in Government feel that We the People, have given them control over our rights by "loaning" them to the government - much as we would give them control over our car if we handed them the keys so they could borrow it to go for a Sunday drive - we should not be surprised when they return our Rights, or our cars, with an empty tank.

What it means to me....
The 4th of July has always been for me a great reminder.

The "radical liberals" in the group wanted to create the United States of America.

The "conservatives" and "traiditionalists" wanted to remain property of the Crown.

Some things never change.

Independence Day
Next Friday, my family will gather. Somehow, after everyone has gorged, the quantity of left-overs will not fit back into the picnic baskets. At least 50# of charcoal will burn. Loaves and Fishes redux! From dawn until dawn, firecrackers, bottle rockets and aerial bombs will excite children and adults. Two bricks, at least, of .22 ammo. will be spent. .17 "BB's" are shot by the pound. .45 ACP and .357 mag., bring your own!

Too soon, I fear, the BBQ will also become illegal. It is somewhat interesting, that the Stassi have never interfered. Maybe they are thinking of ways to tax?

The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and especially the Bill of Rights do not give rights to our citizens. Remember, the people are "...endowed by their Creator with certain unaleinable Rights..."

Folks, that means we have the rights because they were given to us by God. The purpose of the aforementioned documents is to restrain the government from taking those rights away from us.

Someone needs to explain that to Obama and the "useful idiots" who support him. I once thought he was an empty suit, but now I know better. He is a committed Marxist and a very dangerous person who will betray his oath (if he gets to take it) to protect and defend the Constitution. All this "change" BS is just slick marketing, like "new and improved" for breath mints and such.

Wake up America, and smell the coffee!

4th of July
I agree with you on your comments nutnfinr. Obama is a very dangerous man and some of us feel he is the anti-christ.

One more reason for me to celebrate the 4th of July is that my grandfather was born on July 4th 1870.

Seperation
We have taken God out of public life. How can we now still believe the Constution? Is this not a mockery of ourselves? The mention of God does NOT constute a State sponsored religeon, therefore there is no need to repeat this " seperation of state and Church" nonsense!

On its face
When I read the Constitution or the Bill Of Rights I cannot help but wonder why there is so much time, money and deliberation spent on "interpreting" their meaning. It's seems clear to me on its face what the founding fathers were saying in both documents. I bestow upon my government the power it needs to secure (read, protect) my right to life, liberty and the PERSUIT of happiness. If that fails, the the constitution and bill of rights (B.O.R.) gives me the tools to secure it for myself.

Something I see most people misinterpret though is the "persuit of happiness" part. They seem to think that the government is supposed to guarantee their happiness. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Maybe we should have our school children recite the constition and the B.O.R every monday at the start of class...along with the pledge of allegiance.

Loan rights to the government???
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution having nothing whatsoever to do with this rubbish. The DofI was a rejection of British rule. The Constitution was a contract among the states to create the federal government and endow it with certain powers. Rights belong, and always belonged, to the people, without exception. Rights are derived from God, not government. Anyone who believes otherwise is a communist or a lunatic.

Freedom Celebrated on July 4
As I reflect on the lost freedoms I once had in this 'free' country, such as what kind of lightbulb I can legally use or buy, I can't help but wonder how it got to the point where I would now be forced to pay a large fine and serve a mandatory jail sentence
for simple POSSESSION of a 4th of July sparkler in my hometown of Loomis, California. Zero tolerance! Happy Birthday America.

Our Freedoms
America's biggest problem is not our politicians or candidates, but us, the people. We want change, we want to maintain our rights, we want it all. But we won't do anything more than complain about it. You want it, do what the Declaration of Independence tells you is you're right and Get up and PURSUE what you think is right and will bring you happiness. Stop talking, whining, complaining. Make a plan and get busy, ACT!!!

In 1998, the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed by Muslim extremists.

On 9/11/01, four airliners were hijacked; two were used as missiles to take down the World Trade Centers and of the remaining two, one crashed into the US Pentagon and the other was diverted and crashed by the passengers. Thousands of people were killed by Muslim extremists.

In 2002 reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered by Muslim extremists.

I don't think you want to see a list of all the bad things Christians have done. It would be much longer than the one you have made about Muslims. I do not mean to say that Christians are any worse than Muslims. Only that most people belong to one religion or another, and monotheistic religions have an exclusionary view of God that makes them prone to delusions of superiority. Both religions also contain mechanisms to mitigate this sense of superiority. You're supposed to be humble and submit to God, etc. But the incitement to violence is there for people looking for it, even though the vast, vast majority of Christians and Muslims do not commit violence.

Say what?!
What a convoluted chain of command. Who is supposed to be the final arbiter of disputes, God, government, or "the people" in this scheme? (And here I thought the three branches of government were the executive, legislative, and judicial).

If the government and "the people" say they have a right to make me support some lazy trailer park trash with 5 illegitimate kids, and I say otherwise, does that mean they have a perfect right to use force to make me do so, since the government is the current delegate of God's authority, "the people" having chosen not to revoke it?

What happens if I decide that I actually represent "the people" and challenge the government and other claimants to "the people's" (God's) authority? What if the government says none of the claimants are the true representatives of God? If God doesn't show up to make a ruling, who will make the ruling in his stead, and what standard will he use to decide such a dispute? How have disputes like this always been resolved, in the blood-soaked history of the earth?

How exactly is your proposed scheme fundamentally different from the reigning dogma at any two-bit hellhole on earth?

The Declaration of Independence is incredibly important because it acknowledges my, the individual's, rights - over a government's. Religion has nothing to do with it. It is a moral document founded on the RULE OF REASON. Despite the perfunctory reference to God, it is a secular document, designed to recognize man's rights on earth - which are derived from reason.

Trust Them:
The liberals and socialists want us to trust them; they know what is best for us. They believe we are too moronic to know what we want, how to go out and get it, how to enjoy the prosperity and fruits of our labor. They want POWER, and the more we give them, the more they demand to take.

The founders of our nation were Christian men who realized that unless we governed our nation according to God's law, our country would fall into chaos and disrepair (exactly what you see today since we took God out of the equation). So their mention of God was not "token" but what they knew to be right.
We the people are the final arbitors of all decisions, but it was expected that we would use logic, reason, and God's guidance in making hose decisions.

There is almost no time, money and deliberation spent on "interpreting" the meaning of our Declaration and Constitution. The excessive effort is spent obfuscating so that five of the nine Supremes can amend our Constitution anytime they choose to do so.

Who wants to hear a debate between the extremely liberal Democrat Saint Obambi and the moderately liberal Democrat McCain Feingold? Well stated. And our schools, courts, legislatures, and life-style (crime, abortion, same-sex "marriage"), and so many other things are examples of taking God out of our country's guidance. We need to make a U-turn immediately as the Islamic terrorist threats may be more than we can survive with the Political Correctness, and lack of backbone of all or our political leaders.

Do you see in the attitudes of many today a certain - Because we can we should? Gays usurping marriage when all rights can be gained elsewhere. Abortion the ultimate solution for far to many. There are other ways of obtaining the ends. They are more difficult so if we say we can, Why not? Because God may ask us why we chose to?

Actually the PLO which Black September was a part of was hardly Muslim at all, let alone "extremist." Most factions within the PLO were either communist like the PFLP or Arab Nationalist (like the Ba'ath Party in Syria and Iraq) such as Fatah and like their communist peers non-religious. Black September is considered by some to have been part of Fatah and controlled by Arafat so calling it "a Muslim Extremist group would be like calling the Weather Underground "Christian Extremists."

In the conflict in Palestine, it is Hamas and Hezbollah that are the Muslin radicals, not the PLO. The PLO was/is mostly made up of communist/socialist nationalists, not religious zealots.




A few things
Few Americans are interested in "our lives, our fortunes, our sacred honor" but what will the government do for me now--the price of gas, the foreclosures, pay for this for me and pay for that for me. It should probably be changed to "Dependence Day." In 1897, when Congress passed drought relief for Texas, Groover Cleveland vetoed it saying "I feel obliged to withhold my approval of the plan to indulge in benevolent and charitable sentiment through the appropriation of public funds ... I find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution. The lesson should be constantly enforced that though the people should support the government, the government should not support the people."

Today it is "When the people feel pain, the government must do something" which is paraphrasing something George W. Bush said.

As for the taxes to maintain the colonial troops in the American colonies, well, it was the colonists who actually started the French and Indian War to begin with and only fair they should pay for their own protection--but they had other ideas--the rest as they say is history. One I suppose could be politically incorrect and accuse them of ingratitude.

But few think about the 4th one way or the other except as a day off and a change to drink beer and eat bbq and watch things explode in the sky, certaintly few think about being "independent." Not the ones voting for Obama or even McCain for sure.


Declaring Independence from ...
At the beginning of July, when we tend to read more about Independence Day, I read a health care newsletter wherein the editor shared the struggles of Great Britain's National Health Service, which celebrates (if you can call it that) its 60th Anniversary on 5 July. He opined: "This year it sounds like a lot of Brits are ready to sign a Declaration of Independence from the National Health Service. Let's see if they are up to the task."

This put me to thinking: In a sense, I declared independence from the American health insurance system when I joined a Health Care Sharing Ministry in Oct. 2004. No longer would I be tied to a job, wondering about losing my health insurance if I changed jobs. Instead, I have complete portability. No longer would I be tied to a PPO, HMO, or any other managed care system. Instead, I am free to choose whatever doctor or specialist I desire--and I shop before I purchase so that I get the best buy. No longer would I be compelled to pay increased premiums without a say. Instead, I get to vote on whether my monthly share should be increased. No longer would my conscience be heavy with the knowledge that my insurance premium might be going to pay for abortions or other morally repugnant procedures or medicines. Instead, I share bills with other Christians who value life from conception. No longer would I have to pay high premiums. Instead, I share one-fifth the cost on a monthly basis, thus freeing up more of my hard-earned money for other necessities and desires. Overall, my declaration has saved me at least $10,000 in three-and-a-half years.

And as a reward for my declaration, I can pray specifically for the health of other members in the ministry and send them notes of encouragement. When was the last time you heard of an insurance company sending you a get-well card telling you that they were praying for you?
