Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

This year, the days set aside for honoring fathers and flags fell on the same weekend.  Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 of every year. Father’s Day the third Sunday of June, fell on June 15 this year, as close as is possible to Flag Day.

This close alignment of seemingly different days provides us with the opportunity to ponder the significance of remembering and honoring fathers and flags, and to contemplate the intersection of the symbol of our nation (the flag) with the person who, without which, we would not be here today (our father).

While the 13-star design became the official flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, Flag Day was not celebrated or designated until much later. In 1885, B. J. Cigrand, a school teacher in Wisconsin, arranged for his students to celebrate the flag’s birthday in honor of the symbol of freedom and justice.  As Cigrand continued to champion the cause of celebrating our flag’s birthday, Flag Day celebrations became more popular in the late 1800’s.

President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day via proclamation on May 30, 1916. President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day on August 3rd, 1949.  Since that time, Flag Day has been recognized as the birthday of our Nation’s symbol, the Flag.

Father’s Day, a modern invention, was first celebrated in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia and Spokane, Washington.  The West Virginia church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Church Episcopal Church South is believed to have been spurred on by a mine explosion that had killed 361 men, many of them fathers, the prior December.  In addition, just two months prior in the nearby community of Grafton, West Virginia mothers had been celebrated.

The Spokane, Washington event, held at the YMCA, was championed by Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father, Civil War Veteran William Jackson Smart, raised his six children as a single parent after his wife died in childbirth.  Smart, inspired by the recent Mother’s Day celebration, wanted to honor fathers as well.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended Father’s Day be proclaimed a national holiday.  More than four decades later, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson did just that. And in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

This year’s back-to-back celebrations of our flag and our fathers call to mind the father of our country. George Washington, who never had children of his own, instead helped birth a nation.  Think of all U.S. citizens as his descendents.  It would be hard to imagine our nation being formed without him.

In honoring and remembering our father’s and flags, it is useful to review the qualities and aspects of the father of our country, and the only president to serve under the original 13-colony flag.

Washington was 11 when his own father died. Afterward, his older, half-brother Lawrence stepped into the role of father figure. When Lawrence died in 1752, his estate, Mt. Vernon, and his place in Virginia’s militia went to George Washington.

Washington led the Continental Army through the American Revolutionary War. Conditions and events that might have crushed other men instead increased his resolve and belief in the “ Invisible Hand” or “Providence” as he emphasized in his first inaugural address

No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency. . . .

A man who believes in God.

On December 23, 1783, at the end of the Revolutionary War, Washington – who had the chance to become king or emperor – instead presented himself before Congress in Annapolis, Maryland, and resigned his commission. After giving up power, he retired and went home to Mount Vernon.

A man not driven by personal power.

But his retirement didn’t last long. In 1787, appalled by the excesses of state legislatures and the ineffectiveness of the Continental - Confederation Congress, Washington ended his self-imposed retirement and began working for a new Constitution, completed in 1787 and ratified in 1789.

A man willing to work for his nation.

Once the Constitution was approved, Washington received a vote from every elector to become the first president of the United States.

According to his Mount Vernon biography by Jack D. Warren, Jr., Washington “administered the government with fairness and integrity, assuring Americans that the President could exercise extensive executive authority without corruption. Further, he executed the laws with restraint, establishing precedents for broad-ranging presidential authority. His integrity was most pure, Thomas Jefferson wrote, his justice the most inflexible I have ever known, no motive of interest or consanguinity, friendship, or hatred, being able to bias his decision. Washington set a standard for presidential integrity rarely met by his successors, although he established an ideal by which they all are judged.”

A man determined to act with integrity and fairness.

Growing partisanship within the government concerned Washington.  He reluctantly agreed to serve a second term only after his cabinet persuaded him that he commanded the respect of “both burgeoning political parties.”

A man more in love with his country than a party or politics.

So this week, celebrate fathers and flags, and remember too the father of our country, George Washington.  Take inspiration from him, follow in his footprints, to have faith in divine providence, to act with fairness and integrity, to overcome partisanship to create a better country and to work to make things right.  These actions will create a better future for us all.

The example set by President Washington was indeed a very good and noble one, and should inspire all who seek to hold the office he did.

That said, I am here today to honor the greatest man in my life, the man without whose love, backing, and support, I would surely not be where I am today."

Thank God for men like you and your Father!

And, Thank You For Your Service !!!

Your fine tribute brought tears to my eyes, and, no I am not a very emotional person.

And, Jackie Gingrich Cushman, this is without a doubt, your very best column ever.

Kind sir,

You have stomped on me a couple of times.

Obviously, by your thinking, I was dead wrong.

I accept that.

From your brief postings I have to assume you are an American patriot, and possibly a hero as well.

True heros NEVER TALK ABOUT IT !

If your screen name means what I believe it does, then you have my very highest respect, and thank you for your service.

I did not experience your side of it, I was out at sea.

I have read many books by actual participants (Military Bookstore), and I have some brief idea of the HELL that it was, but not having been there, no one can really imagine the horror of it.

Again, thank you.

I observe, AND remember the good posters. I know you typically leave one post, then disappear. Please forgive me if you see this same comment on another site.

Fathers

George Washington was a lot like my Dad in that he was a reliable good guy. Teaching his country/children by example right from wrong, encouraging them to learn and build in the world and to remain centered on a foundation that trancends time and human authority.

It is tough to remain firm in ones understanding of justice for it is truely blind to the affection or hatred one may feel.

George Washington must have felt his alienation from his fellow man and yet through his faith in God, continued to love and serve them.

He was faithful - and in that faithfulness, sufficient trust was established for people to agree to be governed.

In God we trust and we must remain vigilant to the weaknesses of Man.. fashioning a government that serves its people rather than served by the people as we have now become.

Rats and Mice...
...Thank you for your post of 7:53 AM,but I can assure you I was not a hero.I was a professional soldier of Infantry by choice. For the professional soldier to attempt to avoid a war is like a football player who does nothing but practice, but doesn't want to play in a game.I don't know of any.

The real hero's in Vietnam were,as they were throughout our history, the young soldiers drafted right after graduating from high school or college, served their time, got out and got on with their life. Our nation always seems to produce guys like that and I saw what they could do.We have never won a war until a enlisted man with a rifle in his hands can stand on a piece of real estate, unchallenged.Only when that happens can we say "We won".

And BTW,I never miss any of your posts! :-)

give me a break
we all know that fathers and males are disposable and provide little value... just turn on the TV or read the laws coming out of our legilstures.

fathers and males are to be yoked and controled, not admired.

[/cynical sarcasm]

The Law and Fathers

Actually I agree that the law has weakened a Father's rights. For instance, if a man gives his sperm away - he should be potential found liable for child support.

This will quickly increase the value of life as the sperm banks dry up.

A Father has no right to challenge and prevent a woman's abortion even though the sex was by mutual concent.

As my Father got custody of all the underage kids back in the late 70s, I'd say my Dad's role was critical in preserving the greater good.

If we but allowed them their rights and responsabilities...

Washington - giant of history
I read a biography about Washington... and learned how incredible and indispensible he was to the US.

Even though Washington was an ambitious man with all the usual human frailties, he managed to overcome human weaknesses and do the right thing at the right time.

Washington wanted status and wealth… yet never did any self-dealing. He knew that he could have done much better for himself if he stayed on his farm… but time and time again, he neglected his own welfare for the founding of our country.

His peers and the entire country put their naked trust in him… and he did not disappoint. Without Washington, our country might not even exist… or if it did survive without him, things would be very different (and probably worse).

THANK YOU JACKIE
Just had to say Thank You for being the only writer on TH to honor Fathers.

THANK YOU

To Nam 65-66-From One Patriot to Another
Right On Patriot. The Real Heroes of Nam, Korea, WWII, WWI, and all the way back to the American Revolution were the Patriots. The young men and women of this country who sacrificed their lives for Freedom and Ideals without Question??? Their nation called on them and they, who would rather have stayed home with loved ones, packed up without question and reported to the Call of Duty to Country, Family, Freedom, and God. Today's mentality of the Oprah Winfreys, Obama, Pelosi, Kerry, Gore, and all the other Socialists (communists) that we have running this country sickens me. We need to bring back the draft. Bring back discipline in the Military. Get Socialists out of governement. Get the Media out of War Zones, and other sensitive areas. These media types will sell out our Freedom and Security for a Scoop. We need a standing Army to protect and seal our borders. We need to bring our Means of Production Back to This Country, and become Self-Sufficient again. This time around, hold your nose and vote Republican. A better alternative to Democrats. Next time around and beginning immediately, start organizing in your towns and communities to vote local officials not aligned with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb, otherwise known as Democrats and Republicans. George Washington's weakness

George Washington was capable and it is wrong not to fully take on God's gifts with humility and determination to love and serve God.

Call that ambition if you want. A pragmatic man is a good business man and he is fulfilling his role as a provider.

Being involved in the House of Burgess, maintaining friendships with intelligent men and women of like experience and concern would be natural for someone of his deference and caliber.

His one weakness is the hideous green paint he had his dining room painted. Martha Washington must have had great affection for him in order for her to overlook it.

Thanks for this Article
Newt Gingrich was my pick for President on the Republican ticket this time around, but he bowed out. Maybe he knew from experience that in the short term, it makes no difference who the president is, since the Sellout of America has already been ratified by both parties. We have NAFTA, CAFTA, Membership in The United Nations, World Health Organization, NATO, and other agreements that have taken away our Sovereignty as a Free and Independent Nation. And the Ten Trillion Dollar Debt is owed to Foreing nations who Hate Us. The Chinese, Japanese, and Middle East. We have become a Debtor Nation and everybody knows that Creditors call the shots. Better wake up Americans and begin at home in your communities to take your children back from the State Run Schools where they receive Brainwashing and The Dumbing Down Process takes place. Put schools back under Local and Community Control. Say not to Local, State and Federal Depts. of Education. This Socialist School System has taken our children's minds, creativity, and drive and made them Dependent on Schools and their officials for guidance, while destroying Family Rule and Family Values of God, country, and moral values. Happy FAther's Day all you dads. Take your children back from the state and Raise them yourselves. THe Communists, and the Fascists such as Hitler knew that you had to Control The Children to Create a Dictatorship. Our leaders learned the Ideals of Marx and Hitler very well.

Jerome Ennis in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

A man who believes in God…

Many men believe in God. The difference with men like Washington is what they believe about God.

Is God the Sovereign of the universe who rules in the affairs of men? Has God revealed Himself in a mystery in the person and work of Jesus Christ? Are the words of Christ reality for him, rather than what is seen with the eye? The man of faith answers yes from the heart and lives that way. May God raise up many such men in our day who fear God rather than man.

Thank you for the kind comment. I sometimes feel I am unworthy, especially after my analysis of Hul dinkyhoo. He IS an REMF. REMF does NOT mean everyone in the rear area. Only that one in ten thousand. The guy who read in The New York Slimes, that only 1 in 10.000 rounds of ammo actually killed an enemy, and hal thinks, well, since only 100 rounds are effective, that's all I will send to the troops.

...I agree with your invasion of Iran, but let's stay in Iraq also.Iraq is our forward base on the war on terror!

And BTW,let's get Congress to stand up and declare a war on Iran.We can see who our friends and our enemies are in Congress,by name, and act accordingly.

Flag Day comment
All veterans of all branches during all eras, thank you for your service.

My flag is flying over the front porch.

I'm going to put a spotlight on it in order to fly it 24/7 in accord with proper display rules.

We're at war, don't forget that.

Our Nation's flag will remain flying over my front porch until victory is secured.

BTW, I enjoyed reply #15 from the other ValiantForTruth. Somehow there are at least two of us. O.K. by me, we both borrowed that name from the honored author John Bunyan, who wrote Pilgrim's Progress.

Highly recommended reading. Find a version you can understand. It is highly cerebral.

I have said it before and I'll say it again...I love your humor. Since it is Father's Day,I will tell you every time I see your 'rats and mice' at the bottom of your posts,I remember my dad bouncing me on his knees and chanting one of several of his little ditties.

One went like this;

...When I was a little boy,I lived by myself.
All the bread and cheese I got,I laid it on the shelf.

The rats and the mice, they kept such a strife,I had to go to London to get me a wife.

When I got there the streets were so narrow,I had to bring her home in a little wheelbarrow.

The wheelbarrow broke, the wife took a fall..away went the wheelbarrow, wife and all.

((Thanks for reminding me of him when reading your posts.))

Why show a flag flying at half-staff? Do we know the occasion? Or is this half-staff flag a symbol of the Ford Motor situation?

Maybe for this great nation if the libs have their way and Obambi gets the nod.

You seem to be about half-staff. Do you know what caused your condition?
