Memorial Day: Time to Remember, Never to Forget

Tomorrow our nation will celebrate Memorial Day.  For many, Memorial Day weekend is a time to mark the end of school and the beginning of summer.  Time, finally, to sleep in.  

But this weekend marks more that just a transition of seasons.  Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor all those who have died in American wars, a total that the Department of Veterans Affairs puts at more than 1.1 million, Our nation’s practice of honoring our war dead started after the Civil War.  After World War I, all soldiers who had died in all American wars were recognized.

The practice is centuries old. Pericles, the Athenian leader, noted “Not only are they commemorated by column and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in the hearts of men.”  This tribute was given to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War more than four centuries before Christ was born.

All those who serve in the military are prepared to give their lives for our country.  They are the armor and the heart of our nation.  We should honor them not only through memorials, flags at half-staff, parades and ceremonies, but by remembering the purpose of their sacrifice, to protect and defend our freedom.             

My grandfather was a career army officer who served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. He never spoke to me about serving in combat, but I knew he was a soldier and protected our country, and me.    As is the case with most soldiers, he was posted throughout the world during his army career. 

As a result, my father counts France, Kansas and Germany among the places he grew up. He often cites his visit, at age 15, to the battlefield of Verdun, where a quarter million people died, and a million wounded, as a turning point in his life, and recently wrote about the impact of this visit. “ My dad was a career army officer, and it's no exaggeration to say that he is responsible for the path I've taken in my life. When I was fifteen, Dad took me to visit the battlefield at Verdun, in France. It was the bloodiest battle of World War I, one of the bloodiest wars of the 20th century. As I came to understand the tremendous destructiveness of the battle -- and the distinct possibility that its outcome could have been different -- I knew that I would devote the rest of my life to standing between civilization and the madness of places like Verdun.”

This year has included many transitions and changes in our nation’s life.  Hamilton Jordan, who helped President Carter get elected, died this month.  In February, William Buckley, who made conservatism respectable and intellectually appealing in the 1960’s, died.  Both men loved their country and spent their lives serving their country.  Senator Ted Kennedy, who has served in the Senate since before I was born, was diagnosed this past week with a malignant brain tumor.  These events remind us that we are all mortal. 

While we are not all called to serve our country through serving in the armed forces or in the political arena, we all can better our country through the way we live our lives. With freedom comes responsibility, responsibility to ensure that our freedom is maintained.  Freedom is never free, but comes at a cost of lives, of time, of effort and of responsibility.    

While we can never truly repay those who protected our county and our freedom through their ultimate sacrifice, we can honor them not only by thanking them and remembering them, but by ensuring that we are worthy of their sacrifice.

Why is our nation worthy of sacrifice?  And how can we ensure that our nation remains worthy?  How can we, as American people, remain worthy of the ultimate sacrifice?  The first question is answered by men and women brave enough to serve in our armed services.  The second is to be answered by the American public, the citizens of this great nation.  The third question is for each of us to ask ourselves.  Are you living a life worth a soldier’s ultimate sacrifice?

How is our nation different from others? The Declaration of Independence holds the answer. “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”  In my mind, a grand experiment worth sacrifice and effort.

This year on Memorial Day, spend a moment remembering the military men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and freedom. 

After Memorial Day is over and you go back to work, dedicate yourself to making their sacrifice worthwhile.  Take an interest and get involved in what it means to be an American.  Help others understand the importance being an American and living out the American dream.  We have life and liberty and must guard them both, but we are only provided the opportunity to pursue happiness, not happiness itself.  Whether or not you achieve happiness is up to you, and not the responsibility of our government.  

To quote President John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” 

Once we are all gone, what will our legacy be?  A nation that is more free, and more prosperous because of our work and our effort? Or a nation that is faltering due to government efforts to make people happy rather than simply providing us with the liberty to pursue our happiness?

While you might be tempted to leave politics to others, that would be a dangerous tactic.  As Pericles said, “just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you.”

Daddy marched off to World War II at the age of 19, weighing 98 lb. and fleeing a miserable existence in Wisconsin during the depression. He came home with a passion for education, a wider view of both the world and the opportunities available in it, and a perspective on his own problems that did him a lot of good.

Because of War he met his wife of 62 years, in a small town 1500 miles away from the small town where he grew up.

And when I ride to work every morning on the public transit, I see boys that are the age he went to war and wonder if any one of them would be capable of risking everything the way Daddy did, or taking advantage of all he gained by that risk. I just think what would happen the day he is told he cannot take his iPod into battle....

God bless all who risked and continue to risk their lives in my behalf, especially those from Canada who are making bricks without straw and who sometimes do not even have uniforms, weapons or transportation to the battlefield because Canada prefers to spend its money funding sex change operations. You have my prayers, my respect and my thanks, now and forever.

3.94 million slaves (formerly rule by Dems.).

In emulation and as homage to Lincoln, Czar Alexander II Russia then freed his serfs, approx. 47 million Russian slaves.

In 1898, America freed all the slaves of the Spanish Emp. by winning the Spn.-Am. War. That was 10-12 million in South America alone (for the libs. who moan it was just Am. imperialism).

We freed Europe in WW I and liberated 338 million in 1918.

Then, we liberated 738 million Europeans after WW II, AND we created the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe and immediately keep the ravaged population from starving to death.

Bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended a war with Japan, which had a pop. of 72 million Japanese.

In Korea, we saved 2.36 million in the south from being conquered by a dynasty whose major ec. policy is starving the population.

In 1991, we freed 20+ million Kuwaitis from Iraq's aggression.

And in Iraq, 150,000 US soldiers have freed 24,000,000 Iraqis in a country twice the size of CA.

If we don't do it, no one else will. And some day, we will not be either ec. or militarily powerful enough. Look at Eng. 50 years ago the British Empire ruled the world.

We should not be ashamed or demoralized that Iraq is not perfect. A semi-dem. Iraq will buffer Iran's nuclear ambitions, add a ME Arab dem. to Lebanon--maybe help Israel, protect the moderate Arabs, allow business and trade to flourish again (predicted 6% ec. GNP for Iraq this year), and serve as an ex. to the world.

JFK said we would go anywhere and fight any foe for freedom. He must roll over in his grave when he hears liberals speak today.

Anti-Am.'s and our own liberals have killed 72,000,000 with malaria since the ban on DDT in 1972, mostly children. 54,000,000 babies have been slaughtered here through abortion, and 4 million in IndoChina after the fall of Saigon.

Veterans
Veterans include not just those who faced hostilities, but also those who stood in vigilance in times of peace, to insure peace to us all. Thank you, each and every one of you, and may God bless the memory of those who have passed. God bless America and it's brave veterans.

There isn't one person in ten that even knows what Memorial Day is about and almost NONE that cares.

Those of us who served in uniform are a huge minority and getting even more so with the passing of every veteran. There are multiple generations of American families that have had NO participation in the military. Part of the lack of leadership in males in this nation is because they never served in the military and have no concept of what real leadership is nor do they care that they don't know. These are the guys driving the cute little black beemers and who couldn't find the jack or change a tire if their life depended on it. They pull out the cell phone and call AAA Auto Club.

Is it any wonder why the public is so ambelivelant about our country? They never stood at attention and saluted the flag at moring call to colors. Hell, they don't even know what that is and they don't care.

This is a three day holiday and time to go to the beach, drink beer, and grill burgers. Yeah. THAT is what Memorial day is all about to most people.

I'll be placing flags on veteran's tomb stones in cemetaries and I hope all of those guys in the black beemers get to the beach without having a flat. It would be a shame to have "THEIR" weekend spoiled.

The Soul of A Nation
If we, individually or collectively, lose sight of the sacrifices made for our very existence as a free people, then the soul of our great nation, and indeed our own individual souls will die. Literally everything anyone in the United States of America holds dear and, in many cases, takes for granted is owed to the patriotism & ultimate sacrifices of millions who have served to defend it.
God bless them, and indeed all of us! Our need has never been greater.

flag waving
just after 9-11, in my neighborhood, there were 200-250 houses flying the flag. i didn't fly it at that time. not because i am unpatriotic.

the holidays of memorial day just a few months before, there were maybe 12-15 flags flying.
if you don't display your reverence for those that sacrificed their lives in our wars, then when is a more fitting time?

well, the next memorial day rolls around. surprise, there are 50 or so flags displayed.

While I understand your bitterness, I suspect there are way more people who understand the sacrafice made by those who serve our counrty in uniform. However, your observations are correct: there are far too few who understand that the price of their freedom has been paid for in blood. This is not the weekend to try to understand how they have been misled and indoctrinated into becomming the "me" generation. Until then, thank you for your service, and I, too will honor those who died for our freedom, who survived fighting for our freedom and are now gone, because they gave us both the opportunity to post our thoughts, here, in freedom.

This is why we serve ....
You younger soldiers have to pick it up and carry it and pass it on to the youngest soldiers so that soldiers don't forget what we do and why we do it.

Remind 'em that we do it for the folks whose opinions we don't like and don't believe as much as for the ones we do. We do it for the folks who don't worship God the same way we do as well as for the folks who do. We do it for the folks who don't believe in God. We do it for the young kids and the old people. We do it for the folks who can't do it. We also do it for the folks who won't do it. We do it for the folks who have lived in the U.S. for many lifetimes. We do it for the folks who just got there, even if they did get wet to get here. We do it for the ones who think we're baby-killers. We do it for the ones who think we're heroes. We do it for our buddies - guys and girls - right next to us and we do it for the folks at home. We do it for the folks we love more than life itself and we do it for those who are total strangers to us. We do it for love, not hate; for life, not death. We do it for an idea, for a dream, for a hope. That's why.

That's why; pass it on.

Don't be bothered by ...
...folks who say ugly things about vets or the military or wars or whatever. They, too, are folks for whom we have served and would serve again. Unlike Voltaire, who only talked a good fight - "I disagree with what you say but would fight to the death to defend your right to say it." - veterans have fought that fight. It is exactly for that freedom - among all the rest, but the most visible - that we worked, trained, fought and died. Doesn't matter that some folks think "that war" was or is wrong or immoral or bad for one reason or another. Those things aren't what soldiers get to decide. While we're in uniform, we vote (now; couldn't until the early 60's as I recall) but the real burden of the "home front" falls on you civilians. Keep it fair, just, honest, as correct as people can be; make sure that the people aren't ground into the dirt by it. What is "it"? Why the government, of course. Work for the election of the most honest, decent, fair, smart politicians you can find, so we don't come home and retire and look around and find that all that we went through and all that we did was in vain, because the freedoms and the ideals were given away in exchange for "...a mess of porridge."

Ms. Cushman; When WW2 started, I was a boy of 7yrs old in the Philippines. By 1942, I and my family were sequestered in Santo Tomas, a POW camp. (a notorious one at that). The Jap guards didn't particularly like fair haired boys, and my brothers and I were. Their treatment for us boys were to stick a hose in our nose and turn on the water. (they laughed like hell while we were fighting to get a breath)they killed a few boys that way. another one of their "fun" was when we forget to bow, the bottom of our feet were beaten bloody. I remember my 6 yrs old sister carrying me back to our hooch after getting a reminder that we were supposed to bow to those SOBs. After 6 mos, we were released because we were born in the Philippines, therefore a Philippine citizen. We hid in the jungles of Batangas and Cavite. Two weeks before the war was over, my father was captured and killed. Then, God bless them all, we were rescued by the 11th airbourne div. They dropped in on top of us. I was 10yrs old, 4ft 8in tall and I weighed 30 lbs. We were all starving to death and they rescued us just in the nick of time. I'm now 75 yrs old and every day, I still praise the US army.

Well, Hal, you shouldn't waste so much energy trying to think. Especially when it's thinking that Wobbie, the ULTIMATE LIAR(who REFUSES to verify ANYTHING he claims about himself), to be correct.

The young Lieutenant was true to his word that he would be at the Utah Vietnam Veterans Memorial today.

AND he was there in full Dress Blues, Hal.

I met him personally and talked to him and his family for a few minutes. HE IS FOR REAL, Hal.
He has every medal and award that he's claimed to hold, and then some.
AND, HAL, HE IS A SECOND LIEUTENANT. I SAW THE GOLD BARS ON HIS SHOULDERS FOR MYSELF.

The same can not be said about your buddy Wobbie, Hal.
He can't even answer a few simple questions that any REAL Naval Officer should know the answers to without breaking a sweat.
That's something that "a fraud" can not do, Hal, no matter how much he googles for information to try to look legit.

So you go right on telling him that "It's not about you. little one," and he'll go right on laughing at you. But at least he has the dignity of KNOWING THAT HE'S NOT LYING about what he claims.

Can Wobbie say the same?

As someone observed in another thread today, why is it that you took USMC Lt., to task for his post that you wrongly thought was making it about himself, WHEN YOU HAVE NEVER, that I have seen, taken Wobbie to task when he daily makes entire threads all about himself and what he thinks?

Explain that to us Hal.

Are you blinded to Wobbies hijacking of entire threads, making them all about himself with his raving BDS posts because you two are friends?
