Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It’s simple: people come here illegally because the United States offers better opportunities than they had where they were living before. Even after you include the risk of dying while trying to enter the country illegally, the risk of being caught while trying to get in illegally and the risk of being caught while working illegally, an estimated 12 million people have decided that these are risks are worth the potential payoff.

The relationship between illegal aliens and the United States reminds me of the osmosis lesson from high school. “Osmosis is the net flow of water through a semi-permeable membrane that is driven by a difference in concentration of solute on either side.”  Water flows from the side with the low concentration of solutions to the side with high concentration of solutions. Equilibrium is established once both sides have equal concentrations of solutions.

The influx of illegal immigrants is due to the higher relative concentration of opportunity (on the U.S. side) and a relatively permeable membrane (the border).

Any of three changes could diminish the incentive to cross the border illegally -- an increase in opportunity in other countries; a decrease in opportunity for illegal immigrants in the United States or creation of a less-penetrable membrane.

Over the long term, each of these areas needs to be addressed to create a stable immigration pattern.

Enforcing current immigration law would result in lower opportunity for illegal immigrant workers. Illegal immigrants leave their families and brave long treks in the desert or over mountains to reach the United States because they know they can find work here.

Our current enforcement might be termed the “wink and a nod” enforcement. People talk about how employers should enforce immigration law, but then turn their heads, and wink and nod, as a lawn service, painting company, cleaning service or installation crew staffed by illegal aliens working for a subcontractor does the work.

The second area to address is border security. The simple fact that millions of people have entered our country illegally is proof that our borders are not secure.

Count me among the millions of people in the United States who want secure borders. It would be helpful to know who is entering our country and whom we should keep out.

However, I am not quite convinced that we should install a fence.

Recently, I drove through the entrance of a gated community with my children, and thought about the signals such communities send. They remind me of the fiefdoms of times past in England and Scotland and the forts that were build in the Old West to keep settlers in and Indians out. Gated communities are intended to separate those who are allowed to pass through the gates (insiders) from those who are not (outsiders).

In contrast, vibrant, healthy communities are areas where people of mixed backgrounds live together. While there may be a distinction between classes, everyone intermingles, and there is interaction and impact in peoples’ daily lives. For people to progress, they need to meet each other, talk to each other and work with each other. It is hard to hate those whom you work with side by side. It is easy to hate those whom you never see. Continued...

Lilly, Don't Worry About the Farm Moving
As I understand it, unless the farmer is a native born Mexican citizen he would be prohibited by Mexican law from owning real estate in Mexico. If the farmer were a US citizen he could probably lease a farm and land, but he could not own it.

Also, the cheapest laborers in Mexico are the Central Americans living illegally in Mexico. Mexico has their military on their southern border, but some get through. If the expatriate farmer violated Mexican immigration laws like he violates ours he would not like the response. Also, those not born in Mexico are prohibited by law from making public political statements, so they couldn't openly complain when the farm was raided.

These farmers aren't going anywhere, unless they are already dual citizens. Raise the pay, recruit the high school kids, and pay social security taxes and you won't have to hire illegals.

Pack 'em Up and Ship 'em Out!
Jackie Gingrich Cushman's naive and impassioned Liberal-tainted essay has no business being shown in Townhall. Since when are the essays of Liberals welcome here? If it wasn't for her parentage, no one would even be considering her efforts. Send her over to Huffington Post.

Illegal alien invasions are going to destroy this Country. It's more than time to take positive actions to stem the tide, remove the offending parties, and consolidate these efforts with the Homeland Security we obviously need.

Build the fence at 100% of the border. The Mexicans and other aliens seeking the night-train to the US have destroyed our open border policy. It's time to close the borders permanently. Who cares about World opinion? Most of the World dislikes or hates us as much as it envies us anyway, so there's hardly a downside.

Increase our Border Patrol to about 50,000 men and women to secure our Southern and Northern borders. Add substantial security to our ports, and inspect most of the cargo entering the company. Make funds for search and deportation easily available to law enforcement and the judiciary. Send all the illegals packing!

Enact heavy fines for business and individuals who hire or use illegals.

Consider a national ID card. Depending on how it's structured, it mightn't be any more intrusive on our daily lives and freedoms than the Social Security Department, the IRS, property tax rolls, credit card companies, banks, medical firms, etc. who know all about us are now. In any case, our protection in the modern World is of paramount importance.

Increase the size of the Coast Guard to adequately protect our shores. Give it the money and the authority to operate efficiently. Make it quite visible and omni-present.

Stop persecuting and prosecuting Border Agents and other enforcement people for doing their jobs properly. Treat them with the respect they deserve instead of blaming them for possibly hurting some of the illegals.

Allocate sufficient funds for these activities. Such amounts couldn't be anywhere near what the illegals are costing us now. As is often noted, 'no more mister nice guy.' We must protect ourselves even if it seems isolationist to some inside and outside the Country. If we don't do it, then our future is murky and potentially self-destructive.
