Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Dear Kemp grandchildren -- all 17 of you, spread out from the East Coast to the West Coast, and from Wheaton College in Illinois, to Wake Forest University in North Carolina:

My first thought last week upon learning that a 47-year-old African-American Democrat had won the presidency was, "Is this a great country or not?"

You may have expected your grandfather to be disappointed that his friend John McCain lost (and I was), but there's a difference between disappointment over a lost election and the historical perspective of a monumental event in the life of our nation.

Let me explain. First of all, the election was free, fair and transformational, in terms of our democracy and given the history of race relations in our nation.

What do I mean?

Just think, a little over 40 years ago, blacks in America had trouble even voting in our country, much less thinking about running for the highest office in the land.

A little over 40 years ago, in some parts of America, blacks couldn't eat, sleep or even get a drink of water using facilities available to everyone else in the public sphere.

We are celebrating, this year, the 40th anniversary of our Fair Housing Laws, which helped put an end to the blatant racism and prejudice against blacks in rental housing and homeownership opportunities.

As an old professional football quarterback, in my days there were no black coaches, no black quarterbacks, and certainly no blacks in the front offices of football and other professional sports. For the record, there were great black quarterbacks and coaches -- they just weren't given the opportunity to showcase their talent. And pro-football (and America) was the worse off for it.

I remember quarterbacking the old San Diego Chargers and playing for the AFL championship in Houston. My father sat on the 50-yard line, while my co-captain's father, who happened to be black, had to sit in a small, roped-off section of the end zone. Today, we can't imagine the NFL without the amazing contributions of blacks at every level of this great enterprise.

I could go on and on, but just imagine that in the face of all these indignities and deprivations, Dr. Martin Luther King could say 44 years ago, "I have an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in mankind." He described his vision for America, even as he and his people were being denied their God-given human rights guaranteed under our Constitution.

You see, real leadership is not just seeing the realities of what we are temporarily faced with, but seeing the possibilities and potential that can be realized by lifting up peoples' vision of what they can be.

When President-elect Obama quoted Abraham Lincoln on the night of his election, he was acknowledging the transcendent qualities of vision and leadership that are always present, but often overlooked and neglected by pettiness, partisanship and petulance. As president, I believe Barack Obama can help lift us out of a narrow view of America into the ultimate vision of an America where, if you're born to be a mezzo-soprano or a master carpenter, nothing stands in your way of realizing your God-given potential.

Both Obama in his Chicago speech, and McCain in his marvelous concession speech, rose to this historic occasion by celebrating the things that unite us irrespective of our political party, our race or our socio-economic background.

My advice for you all is to understand that unity for our nation doesn't require uniformity or unanimity; it does require putting the good of our people ahead of what's good for mere political or personal advantage.

The party of Lincoln, (i.e., the GOP), needs to rethink and revisit its historic roots as a party of emancipation, liberation, civil rights and equality of opportunity for all. On the other hand, the party of Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy and now Obama must put forth an agenda that understands that getting American growing again will require both Keynesian and classical incentive-oriented (supply-side) economic ideas. But there's time for political and economic advice in a later column (or two).

Let me end with an equally great historical irony of this election. Next year, as Obama is sworn in as our 44th president, we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. I'm serving, along with former Rep. Bill Gray of Pennsylvania, on the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Board to help raise funds for this historic occasion. President-elect Obama's honoring of Lincoln in many of his speeches reminds us of how vital it is to elevate these ideas and ideals to our nation's consciousness and inculcate his principles at a time of such great challenges and even greater opportunities.

In fact, we kick off the Lincoln bicentennial celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Gettysburg, Pa. The great filmmaker Ken Burns will speak at the Soldier's National Cemetery on the 145th anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. On Thursday, Nov. 20, at Gettysburg College, we will have the first of 10 town hall forums, titled "Race, Freedom and Equality of Opportunity." I have the high honor of joining Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Professor Allen Guezlo and Norman Bristol-Colon on the panel, with Professor Charles Branham as the moderator.

President-elect Obama talks of Abraham Lincoln's view of our nation as an "unfinished work." Well, isn't that equally true of all of us? Therefore let all of us strive to help him be a successful president, so as to help make America an even greater nation.

JACK HERE IS THE LETTER TO MY G-CHILDREN
DEAR KIDS ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND THAT COLOR OR SKIN,HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WAY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR A US PRESIDENT!ITS AL ABOUT HIS CHARACTER!DOES HE RESPECT THE UN-BORN,DOES HE PUT HIS HAND OVER HIS HEART DURING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM!DOES HE RESPECT OUR GUN RIGHTS!IS HE A CONSERVATIVE?DOES HE RESPECT GOD AND THE BIBLE!DOES HE BELIEVE THAT MARRIAGE=ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN!DEAR KIDS IF HE DOESNT BELIEVE IN THESE I DONT CARE IF HE IS BLACK WHITE OR GREEN DONT VOTE FOR HIM!

Great letter
Jack Kemp "gets it" and if there are a lot more like him, the Republican Party might have some life in it after all. I've always believed Bill Clinton might have been a one-term president if Kemp had been at the top of the ticket in 1996, and have been sad to see his low profile since then.

?????
Jack,

I think you might have been hit in the head too many times.

Your 17 grandkids will make good commies.

A Commie in The White House
Mr. Kemp,,,shame on you! My grandchildren will not be held hostage. They will know the truth.

Dear Grandpa Jack
What a nice grandpa you are! And grandpa, I think the big point you made about racial inroads is in the large veiw of things really small. This election did show that America is not as racist as its made to be, even though 95% of blacks voted for Obama, do youthink they voted on the color of skin or content of character? I dunno grandpa, isn't character more important than skin color? That's what ML King said isn't it? What is character grandpa? Is it the inward motivation to do that which is right in every situation according to the highest standards of human behavior? What standards are they grandpa? Would the 10 commandments be a good standard, specially since Mr. Obama professed to be a "Christian"? How about doing all we can to stop murder in our government, when we all know when human life begins, and what kind of life it is when a woman gets preganant? Aren't we part of the "sin" if we don't do what we can to stop the daily shedding of innocent blood, even if because of the inconvenience or happiness of the mother? Or as Mr. Obama said "I would'nt want one of my girls PUNISHED with a BABY if they made a mistake. Grandpa I love babies because they're given to us by God himself, so may I please grieve a little bit, as a matter of fact, grieve alot, and let's do what we can to keep fighting to stop anti-character in our leaders, ok gramps, lets focus on that, because I believe there is a God in heaven lookin down, don't you?

I wholeheartedly agree that
the election of an African-American is a good thing. But why did it have to be a socialist? Does anyone seriously think a "white" socialist could have won the presidency? The elites -- including Kemp -- are so orgiastic about electing a black, ANY black, that when his Marxist/Socialist ideology is brought up, it's labeled as racism. Had it been J.C. Watts, Michael Steele or Condi Rice winning the election, I, along with most conservatives, would be dancing in the streets....and, the MSM would be busily dumping on them long before inauguration day.

My letter to my grandchildren...
When I read the title of Kemp's piece, I was expecting an apology to his grandchildren for saddling them with $13trillion in national debt and growing. That sum will sure to balloon with all Democrats running the country. If I were to write a letter to my grandchildren, I would apologize for that and for letting our constitution flushed down the toilet by Washington elites.

There was nothing monumental about Obama's election to me except maybe that he's the most unqualified candidate to ever hold the office. This election was more of a season of American Idol then a race on the issues that affect our country.

The only candidates (i.e., Hunter, Tancredo, Thompson) who give a damn about our grandchildren didn't make it pass the first cut in the nomination process. They were like the fat guy with a terrible voice getting cut in the first episode. Also, if John Murtha can get re-elected you know just how dumb some of the people in this country are.

So, we'll have another two, four or more years of political elites in Washington selling our grandchildren down the road so that they can keep their power and change the constitution at will. Now that's worthy of an apology to my grandchildren.

Letter to my Grankids.....
With all due rspect Mr.Kemp, in it's premise, your letter makes sense,if we lived in an utopian world, where there are......
1.no terrorist attacks
2.no bail-outs for for wealthy CEOs/companies
3.no misinterpreting the U.S.Constitution
4.no teaching "children" gay marriage is ok
5.no using abortion as "birth-control"
6.no one trying to ban the Bible or it's principles(such as the ACLU).
7.no media outlet publically disrespecting the President, our flag, our military!
8.no raising taxes so high, that causes a recession.
unfortunately, we don't live in UTOPIA, we live in the USA, the greatest country on GODs' green/blue planet! That's why people from other countries are risking life&limb to get here,
and NO ONE is trying to leave( even tho they(liberal-dems)claim it's such a terrible place)!!!
A real black-american(which Barry is not)President would be a wonderful legacy for
the USA!!
There are more qualified Black congressman & senators, than you can count on both hands, however, they may not
be considered"handsome" like BHO, or a great orator, and definitely NOT democrat, who have the backing of socialist billionaires!!
Sorry, I do not agree with the choice of
52 million socialists voted BHO into office, woe
be unto them......they will live to regret
...."this (un-presi-dented) legacy"....

kemp
you weren't much of football player, and less of a writer. if you wanted a black in office, bill cosby would have been a good choice, at the least he is a patriot, this half breed empty suit is a nothing like pelosi, reid, and frank. the U.S. is in deep trouble. Several million clue less people voted for osama, but the sad part is several million people that knew sold their souls for the promise of a dollar.

Only in America
Jeez such vitrol! Jack was NOT saying that we should not criticize Obama, but merely recognize the historical importance of this election.
Irregardless of his politics, Obama is president. What I think is interesting is that this can only happen in America. Where are the minorities who have risen to power in Europe, Africa or Asia. We are truly "the light upon a hill", in this regard.
OF COURSE IT WOULD'VE BEEN NICE IF OBAMA WAS CONSERATIVE. But let's face it, this party has been pretty lax in that regard. Now its our turn to go out and get them to show that minorities have a place within the GOP.

Major Barf Alert
Dear Grandchildren: Please pay attention as I pat myself on the back for being so much better than your normal racist white guy . Isn't this a great county? We bought into the mainstream media propaganda and elected a radical communist racist baby-butcher America-hater, but since we all live in a gated community and work for the government, we won't have to worry at all. Obama snorted coke, plays hoops & likes pants-dragging Hip Ho Ho's. Isn't he the coolest? You won't have to worry about a thing because the government is going to take care of everything, and all you have to do is agree to wipe yourself with the US Constitution every day. No biggie, Supreme Court justices do it, and so does our Messiah.

0bama a Leader? Not Really.
I do not believe 0bama has the instincts to be a leader. What 0bama has is charisma, but no leadership skills. Being elected on the basis of his charisma alone means that the government is really being put into the hands of whoever has been grooming 0bama for political office for the past 20 years.

He has demonstrated that he is dishonest, and he has shown that he intends to shut down dissent via the use of the courts and the use of the "Fairness Doctrine" (look at the way he attacked Joe the Plumber, just a regular American citizen who asked a question that made 0bama show his true Marxist intentions). And his "civilian security force", better know as Gestapo, is one of the worst things that could happen to this country.

Other than that, he would make an excellent President.

The First African American President
Congratulations on a very good article, Jack.

Anyone who mistakenly wants to think that racial discrimination wasn't much of a factor after the slaves were freed in 1865 doesn't want to look at history objectively. But it is also true that a number of those with dark skin have tried to use the argument that if you disagree with them about something, it must be because you are prejudiced against those with dark skin; and some like to think (or pretend to think) that most all of their problems are because of being discriminated against because of their skin color.

But with Barack Obama as President of the US, all that can be put behind anyone who wants to do so, and for sound biological reasons.

Barack Obama is a biracial man, having received 50% of his DNA from his “white” American mother and 50% of his DNA from his “black” African father. Of course, Barack Obama looks more like his father than his mother because for unknown reasons the part of DNA that controls skin color, hair type, and other characteristics of physical appearance is generally more dominant in “black” DNA than in “white” DNA.

His father was very intelligent and passed that potential along to his son through the part of his DNA that directs brain building. His mother was also intelligent and half of her son’s brain building DNA came from her. Barack Obama barely knew his father who left when Barack was 2 years old. Young Barack was raised and nurtured primarily by his mother and his maternal grandparents, and he received a first rate education.

The First African American President 2
cont.
Perhaps the example of Barack Obama will help the human race begin to fully understand that each of has a new combination of parental DNA, one’s own DNA, whose brain building capability is independent of whatever characteristics of physical appearance other parts of that DNA happen to produce; and once built, that new human brain, in combination with the nurturing, education, and experience it receives, develops functional capabilities such as intelligence, reasoning, language abilities, values, character, personality etc., that are also independent of whatever characteristics of physical appearance one’s DNA produces.

In short, the quality of the brain building DNA provided by one’s parents matters; nurturing, education, and experience matter; but characteristics of physical appearance produced by other parts of one’s DNA are unrelated to the ultimate functional capabilities of one’s brain. They don’t matter.

Discussing, debating, modifying, and agreeing or disagreeing with an idea generated by or promoted by the brain of an individual of whatever skin color or whether male or female is what productive human discourse is all about. Those who can’t learn to do so will eventually become irrelevant.

Kemp - just go away
Jack Kemp is a bloated old fool! To even consider Obama's election as anything positive for this country shows a complete lack of conservative or Republican principles. Obama stole this election by constantly lying about all his past associations, policies and influences. If we had an honest Press in America, he'd have been exposed for the complete fraud that he is. There is NOTHING here to celebrate.

Old and young fools
I hear a lot of fools spouting off comments around here, and maybe I'm one of them. :) But isn't it foolish indeed to believe that either faith or reason must supplant one another? I subscribe to both, though I prefer sheer faith to sheer reason. It is faith in a God much bigger than all our petty grievances that informs the search for reason. No one can reason his way to God and nothing makes sense without Him. All who claim some illuminati status are likely foolish.

Drinking kool-aid
apparently turns your mind to mush. Jack seems to have been knocking back a few with ol' Barry. Maybe he's trying for a spot in Barry's cabinet, cause he sure sounds like him.

Move on, folks. Nothing to see here.

The road to hell....
The road to hell is paved with good intentions and so is this article by Mr. Kemp seemingly advising us to lie down with dogs. I have not read anything that has made me change my mind about the newly-elected leader of the USA. I am NOT going to support a dubious person just because a bunch of brainless money grubbers voted for him.
When the s--t hits the fan I won't be rejoicing--- I'll be sad for my country and for all of us who said the emperor had no clothes!

messiah of Islam celebration
America didn't elect a black man.. A black man stole the election...And this black man is far more than just a black man.. He is the long awaited messiah of Islam prophesied to be named HUSSEIN after Mohammad's grandsons..

And sir I doubt your grandchildren will celebrate this earth shaking event in a few months...
And speaking of earth shaking ..Isaiah 14 -16.they that see thee (Lucifer in flesh)shall narrowly look upon thee, [and] consider thee, [saying, Is] this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;...
No wonder The anti christ was elected president of USA.. It isn't that he is so brilliant it is that some in America are so stupid or evil..

One last thought, Kenya, Hamas, Libia, Sudan, Louis Farrakhan and all muslim lands are celebrating the arrival of their messiah....I WILL NOT JOIN THEM NOR WILL I PRAY FOR ANTI CHRIST....He is their president, and messiah not mine..

Monumental? You're Nuts!

To say Barack Obama acheived the presidency does not say something good about America. It says something about ignorance. Of course selecting John McCain as his opponent says much the same.

What this election says is largely about blind rage and hatred visited upon scared, marginally educated elderly, spoiled, cut off your nose to spite your face baby boomers and our deplorable public education system having taken root somewhere along the way. It says something about liberal's evil, all consuming, filthy fight for power.

More incredible than Obama is an increase in congress of the very people with the lowest satisfaction ratings in history who were directly responsible for our economic meltdown, and who now want to forcibly take the 401K plans of their happy, la la land constituents and bury their savings in our nations abominable social security system.

Peter, Tucson

Two checks for Lincoln??
As I write this, Kemp's post has gotten 2 checks from the faithful...In comparison, the Malkin piece on Obama's estranged dad's half-sister, gets 5 checks...Bravo!....Here's why I come to Townhall..I keep thinking, hoping and praying that the rational majority will realize and once-again embrace the GOP as the Party-of-Lincoln...Yes boys and girls, the GOP did not start with Goldwater, Buckley or Reagan (Although, I would doubt that ANY of these three would be embraced by the "Conservatives" who bloat propaganda here)...Alas, my hope will go on in vain...The answer for what's wrong with the Republican Party, is found right in this column...The GOP sold it's soul in order to gain those precious electoral votes from the South in the 60's...Barack Obama described the Republican Party during his acceptance speech...If the definition seems foreign to the Townhall crew, it's because the "conservatives" have co-opted the message to represent division and intolerance...What ails the GOP?...The answer is simple...Two checks for Lincoln.

WAKE UP JACK…
Judgment Day...Nov 4 2008…

First, I would like to congratulate Obama for the greatest of victories. I hope and pray that he is able to keep this country together as “One Nation under God”.

He got his moneys worth from the Democrat Party Machine, ACORN, and all the other supporters of his campaign. Lies and deception won-out this time and once the truth is known President Obama will have a lot of explaining to do and will become history’s answer to; “WHY DID AMERICA IMPLODE ON ITS SELF”.

This election maybe a “first”, Obama will be this country’s first black president, but it certainly is not ground-shaking. It only confirms what many have known for years, the white-against-black racism is a relic of our past. And is only used by the race-baiters such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to extort money and favors for themselves; and to keep African-Americas dependent on the Democrats and Governments that will continue to “take from Peter and give it to Paul”, Paul will always vote for a Government that continues this policy.

Now…(I hope I am wrong)…Let the revolution begin with…”WE THE PEOPLE”, have decided that our founding fathers were wrong. Their principles, ideals and their American Dream flawed. “WE THE PEOPLE” have decided that the Socialist principles, ideals and the Marxist Dream are a much better way.

I find it unbelievable that America would elect an unknown far left Liberal/Socialist as President of these United States of America. What have we done? Do we realize that we just enabled a far left Liberal/Socialist agenda upon ourselves? Our forefathers must be turning over in their graves. Mr. “HOPE AND CHANGE” with a total lack of grit will, both at home and aboard; be tested early and often. What if he fails these tests? Then WHAT…? Can we afford his failures?

African-American Democrat Socialist
You forgot the Socialist part, this election is nothing to celebrate, America is caught up with race, they certainly didn't elect Obama on policy-abortion isn't a political platform, its a wedge issue, and Obama is a harbinger of our declining political culture degenerating down to mob rule and state controlled media.

I'm guessing most of Jack Kemp's kids will ultimately emigrate to a foreign country to escape the oppressive taxes of the minority left.

Jack Kemp, perpetual Republican retread, he never met a government program that he didn't want to expand, he needs to be retired to the glue factory.

I love This Article
Its good to know that someone is teaching their children and grandchildren to love and appreciate all the children that God has made.

Yuck...
Kemp, you and Tim Pawlenty need to become Democrats fast. There might be positions for you both in the Obama administration. And present Obama with your trick of cutting taxes and spending furiously at the same time. That Keynesian/supply side trick. That worked wonderfully while Bush was president, didn't it?

I wish him good luck

I have been hoping for a Black President for many years, but just not one like this one. I don’t wish him any bad luck because it is my country he is going to rule, and more citizens voted for him than for the other guy. And that is that, for the next 35,000 hours.

As a matter of fact, I hope he does such a good job that he is reelected by winning 500 electoral votes. Why? That would mean my Country was in good enough shape four years from now, that most people are happy with what he had done by then.

I don’t wish him personally any good luck, or bad luck, I just want my country to enjoy and prosper for the entire 35,000 hours.

Over and over people complain that we are running up a national debt that our poor children will have to pay.

Think of this, if your parents left you a $100,000 debt that just had to be paid off, that would be terrible, wouldn’t it. Terrible that is until you found that they had left you a $1,000,000 home that was free and clear of mortgage.

Same thing for the nation. So what if they are left a few trillion dollars they need to pay to themselves (and some people in foreign nations). Just look around and see the hundred’s of trillion dollars worth of buildings, roads, knowledge, and on and on, that we and our ancestors created for them.

African-American? Elected?
First - he is hardly any African - mostly Arabic on the dark skin side . Second. Elected? He used and abused the pitifully ignorant buy buying their votes with a cigarette or a dollar or whatever would work. He is the puppet of George Soros and got money from soros and terrorists too. He is a liar and has never run anything but his mouth and that not well! It was not really an election - it was stolen all the way and only the stupid voted for him. He p;ans to tear up the constitution and destroy America, using a Nazi youth corp and unions to control everybody after taking all guns away and making it hard to move around.( that is why no drilling and no new energy sources) He thinks he is already dictator and all the press are totally ignoring the fact that he came to be on the ticket by the manipulation of Soros and other communists. They didn't even look into anything to stop him. It stinks to high heaven and it should never have been allowed! Skin color has nothing to do with it - any GOOD man can be elected - but we did not have an election in reality! It was all pretend!

America is suffering
America is suffering unlawful deception from the Alinsky group.
Group u$urp$ power on January 20th—the constitution violated.
The United States Supreme Court alone can relieve this outrage.
