Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Once when I had given a firebrand speech against the political position of then-House Majority Leader Tip O'Neill, Ford said to me: "Jack, you might have been a quarterback of the San Diego Chargers and the Buffalo Bills, but I'm the quarterback here and you're a blocking guard, not the quarterback." Ford was working out a compromise with O'Neill and the Democrats, and he was telling me not to jeopardize his delicate negotiations.

I never forgot that lesson of principled compromise that Ford believed was in the best interest of our nation's foreign policy.

I had my disagreements with Ford on taxes, the Jackson-Vanik Amendment on Soviet Jewry and not inviting Alexander Solzehnitzen to the White House, but I never doubted his honor, integrity or his love of country.

At the visitation in Palm Desert, I had the wonderful opportunity to tell Betty Ford that her husband gave all of us in the political arena a great example of effective leadership and principled conservatism. Then I told her that he also gave me one of the best pieces of advice I ever received.

I was a freshman congressman from upstate New York when one Friday afternoon during football season he noticed how nervous and fidgety I was in the back benches of the House. He said, "Jack, what's wrong?" and I told him that I was anxious to get out to watch my son quarterback a big football game. "You know Jack," he said, "one of my biggest disappointments was not being able to watch my son play football. Don't miss your son's game."

In "Pirkei Avot - The Ethics of the Fathers," Rabbi Shimon Ben Elazar writes that there are three crowns to a man's life: "The crown of learning, the crown of the priesthood and the crown of royalty. But the crown of a good name exceeds them all."

Ford wears the highest crown of a successful life, the crown of a good name. What a great legacy.

Gerald.Our. Ford
Here is what I wrote on my blog about the show of respect in Grand Rapids Mi.where he is buried .

"I pronounce it as certain that there was never yet a truly great
man that was not at the same time truly virtuous."

-- Benjamin Franklin (The Busy-body, No. 3, 18 February 1728)

This has been an interesting day or two in Grand Rapids MI. as we mourn the loss of " our " president who was raised here and served us greatly as a congressman and vice president and president. His body was flown in Tuesday afternoon and was motorcaded to his museum where people could walk by and pay there last respects starting at 6:00 pm .
Well people were lined up at 3:00 waiting to see him .Our family thought we would wait for the rush to go down as people got out of work so we went downtown at 10:00 and a police officer told that there was a 7 hour wait in line. That would be 5:00 am which would be time to leave for work so we went back home and thought about getting up at 3:00 and got back but there was still a 2-3 hour wait then. So about 8:00 the TV stations were reporting that there was a 1/2 hr wait so she packed up the kids and went down there . A lot of people must have heard that and by the time she got there the line was back up to 2 hours.
we have heard that Mrs Ford has expressed her gratitude for all the people who have come to see her husband . Plus a couple of there sons where in line shaking hands as people filed through the museum .
People are also lining up to watch the 15 plane fly over by F-15's in the missing man formation at 3:00 when they play taps at the funeral at his Gr church
I was in my early teens when he was President so I don't remember much but it has been touching to here all the people tell of how President Ford touched their lives . It seems he truly tried to live the life of Jesus Christ to all his " Neighbors "

Ford's Legacy
Too bad the press - and the public - failed to recognize these wonderful qualities President Ford possessed while he was alive. All I remember from that time is the press, television comedians and political commentators portraying him as a bumbling/stumbling stooge of the Republican Party power bosses.
