The Environmental Benefits of Offshore Drilling

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Louisiana produces almost 30 per cent of America's commercial fisheries. Only Alaska (ten times the size of the Bayou state) produces slightly more. So obviously, Louisiana's coastal waters are immensely rich and prolific in seafood.

These same coastal waters contain 3,200 of the roughly 3,700 offshore production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. From these, Louisiana also produces 25 per cent of America's domestic oil, and no major oil spill has ever soiled its coast. So for those interested in evidence over hysterics, by simply looking bayou-ward, a lesson in the “environmental perils” of offshore oil drilling presents itself very clearly.

Fashionable Florida, on the other hand, which zealously prohibits offshore oil drilling, had its gorgeous "Emerald Coast" panhandle beaches soiled by an ugly oil spill in 1976. This spill, as almost all oil spills, resulted from the transportation of oil – not from the extraction of oil. Assuming such as Hugo Chavez deign to keep selling us oil, we'll need increasingly more and we'll need to keep transporting it stateside – typically to refineries in Louisiana and Texas.

This path takes those tankers (as the one in 1976) smack in front of Florida's panhandle beaches. Recall the Valdez, the Cadiz, the Argo Merchant. These were all tanker spills. The production of oil is relatively clean and safe. Again, it's the transportation that presents the greatest risk. And even these spills (though hyped hysterically as environmental catastrophes) always play out as minor blips, those pictures of oil-soaked seagulls notwithstanding. To the horror and anguish of professional greenies, Alaska's Prince William Sound recovered completely. More birds get fried by landing on power lines and smashed to pulp against picture windows in one week than perished from three decades of oil spills.

For fear of oil spills, as of 2008, the U.S. Federal government and various states ban drilling in thousands upon thousands of square miles off the U.S. Coast. These areas, primarily on the Outer Continental Shelf, hold an estimated 115 billion barrels of oil and 633 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. This leaves America 's energy needs increasingly at the mercy of foreign autocrats, despots and maniacs. All the while worldwide demand for oil ratchets ever and ever upward.

"Environmentalists" wake up in the middle of the night sweating and whimpering about offshore oil platforms only because they've never seen what's under them. This proliferation of marine life around the platforms turned on its head every "environmental expert" opinion of its day.

The original plan, mandated by federal environmental "experts" back in the late '40s, was to remove the big, ugly, polluting, environmentally hazardous contraptions as soon as they stopped producing. Fine, said the oil companies.

About 15 years ago some wells played out off Louisiana and the oil companies tried to comply. Their ears are still ringing from the clamor fishermen put up. Turns out those platforms are going nowhere, and by popular demand of those with a bigger stake in the marine environment than any "environmentalist."

Every "environmental" superstition against these structures was turned on its head. Marine life had EXPLODED around these huge artificial reefs: A study by LSU's Sea Grant college shows that 85 percent of Louisiana fishing trips involve fishing around these platforms. The same study shows 50 times more marine life around an oil production platform than in the surrounding Gulf bottoms.

An environmental study (by apparently honest scientists) revealed that urban runoff and treated sewage dump 12 times the amount of petroleum into the Gulf than those thousands of oil production platforms. And oil seeping naturally through the ocean floor into the Gulf, where it dissipates over time, accounts for 7 times the amount spilled by rigs and pipelines in any given year.

The Flower Garden coral reefs lie off the Louisiana-Texas border. Unlike any of the Florida Keys reefs, they're surrounded by dozens of offshore oil platforms.

These have been pumping away for the past 50 years. Yet according to G.P. Schmahl, a Federal biologist who worked for decades in both places, "The Flower Gardens are much healthier, more pristine than anything in the Florida Keys. It was a surprise to me," he admits. "And I think it's a surprise to most people."

"A key measure of the health of a reef is the amount of area taken up by coral," according to a report by Steve Gittings, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's science coordinator for marine sanctuaries. "Louisiana's Flower Garden boasts nearly 50 percent coral cover. In the Florida Keys it can run as little as 5 percent."

Mark Ferrulo, a Florida "environmental activist" uses the very example of Louisiana for his anti-offshore drilling campaign, calling Louisiana's coast "the nation's toilet."

Florida's fishing fleet must love fishing in toilets, and her restaurants serving what's in them. Most of the red snapper you eat in Florida restaurants are caught around Louisiana's oil platforms. We see the Florida-registered boats tied up to them constantly. Sometimes us locals can barely squeeze in.

In 1986 Louisiana started the Rigs to Reef program, a cooperative effort by oil companies, the feds and the state. This program literally pays the oil companies to keep the platforms in the Gulf. Now some platforms are simply cut off at the bottom and toppled over as artificial reefs; over 60 have been toppled thus far.

A few years back, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries officials were invited to Australia to help them with a similar program. Think about it: here's Australia, the nation with the Great Barrier Reef, the world's biggest natural reef, the world's top dive destination – they're asking help from “the nation's toilet” about developing exciting dive sites by using the very structures that epitomize (in greenie eyes) environmental disaster.

America desperately needs more domestic oil. In the process of producing it, we'd also get dynamite fishing, dynamite diving, and a cheaper tab for broiled red snapper with shrimp topping.

I wonder where this guy got his degree in marine biology? Isn't the great danger of off shore drilling rigs, accidents and hurricanes? Like after Katrina when 8 million gallons of oil was spilt.

http://www.laseagrant.org/hurricane/archive/ports.htm#Q2

daft: And where did YOU get your degree

in teaching?

Clean, clean oil, I love you
Fontova's articles are always a treat, but this is an outstanding article and a watertight argument.

It is true that in many areas, old ships are sunk to create beautiful reefs and a diving tourist industry, even far north off the coasts of Canada. These habitats attract incredible sea life within years.

The elimination of oil tanker transportation in favor of local production is really a stroke of genius. It is an argument that shows the heart of a ~true~ environmentalist, and one who has not been turned to stone by the hideous medusa of environmental doctrine.

Chinese
Funny no one seemed to have issue with the Chinese planting 36 new platforms in the Gulf recently. I guess its okay for other countries to pollute because they have our best interests at heart.

Fivo: Exactly!
.

WHO FUNDS ECO INSANITY?
For decades Saudi Arabia has known that the lower the supply of oil, the higher its profits. The formation of OPEC was specifically to reduce supply and increase profits.

Our mainstream media is incapable of seeing and reporting on itself. But with all those $billions can anyone imaging that the Saudi's did not attempt to influence American opinion to reduce if not eliminate our energy resources? They couldn't tell Americans to stop drilling for oil and gas so the Saudi's could charge Americans $5 a gallon for gas. But they could support the Green Party, set up retirement plans for American politicians, and bribe journalists and buy newspapers.

Can anyone imagine that the Saudis have not done this? Its obvious that tens of $millions have gone to the Clintons. George Bush Sr is making over one hundred times his Presidential salary per year as a "consultant" to the King of Saudi Arabia. As for the rest, crucial tho it is, the bribing of a journalist or congressman happens under the radar. When it isn't legal the money can be deposited in Saudi or Swiss banks. Far beyond our governments power to subpoena the records.

Offshore Realty
I don't presume that I can convince one person blinded by hatred of oil of the reality of the offshore Louisiana and Texas situation, but I'll try. I worked 10 years as a deep sea diver in the 1970s doing primarily pipeline construction, and now from 1996 to present I have worked offshore in the GOM (Gulf of Mexico) monitoring diving and ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) operations for the oil industry.

I have thousands of hours on the bottom myself and countless thousands of hours of monitoring operations topside for divers and ROVs. Guess where most of the cute little fishies live? They live at or near offshore platforms, next to pipelines where the pipelines remain exposed unless buried, and they love pipeline crossings where sandbags or 8'x20' articulated concrete mats are installed to ensure pipeline separation and cover. In short, oil companies have been a huge boon for marine life in the GOM...and every single person working for any length of time in the Gulf knows this. Fishermen set a straight course for the rigs and platforms for one reason: that is where the fish are. The vast majority of offshore real estate is otherwise a non-descript, desolate mud bottom.

Have there been spills? Sure, a few, primarily associated with hurricanes tearing apart pipelines in relatively shallow water, but check valves and shut-in operations prevent most catastrophic damage. You would not believe the hoops that we must jump through with collection domes, pumps, tanks, oil booms, etc., if there is any chance a few cups of oil may leak out during a repair operation. If all these artificial reefs (which is what the rigs and platforms represent) were not there, you would essentially have a flooded death valley.

Environmentalists in this case are shooting themselves (and everyone else) in the foot with their wanting to block all offshore operations. Ask any GOM diver, ROV pilot, or sports fisherman who frequents the Gulf about these matters.

Chainsaw
is right. The offshore structures are full of wildlife. Our coast is messed up from the dumping of the Mississippi river into the Gulf not from the offshore oil platforms. Maybe we should take a bunch of greenies and congressman to these platforms so they can see for themselves the abundance of wildlife. On second thought congress doesn't want to be convinced that drilling can be done safely and without major spills. I live only 8 miles from the Gulf and grew up fishing these waters.

They Don't Care
The tree huggers don't care that there might be environmental positives from offshore drilling. All they are interested in is shutting down industry, any industry, as they see it all as evil. They would be happy to see a few people left alive having to live in caves and eating bark. They hate themselves and they hate mankind.

Fishermen at oil platforms?
How can that be?!! They're so...unnatural.

Better to catch NO fish than to be subjected to the sight of...metal? Now if you could plant a nice, big TREE out there....

TruLib is right; environmentalist wackos don't care about the environment. Nor do politicians. It was once only the Left that wanted America's strength and power reduced. Now the "right" seems to be climbing on board too.

"Cap & Trade"? Don't you wonder if there's even one politician who actually believes carbon dioxide is hazardous to our environment and/or lives? Whatever, it's certainly a great way for Washington to grab power and money.

My senator just sent me a letter asking for a campaign contribution. His big issue? We need to develop "alternative energy sources." Sigh. Yeah, I'll send him a BIG donation. Not. In fact if he doesn't bring some sanity back to the arguments about developing our own oil resources, carbon dioxide as a pollutant, and the "cap & trade" scam, I may have trouble even dragging myself to the voting booth to vote for him.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. He did explain that turning corn into ethanol is NOT why food prices have risen. Uh huh, probably not what's jacking up corn prices either.

eco-Marxist goal
The goal of the eco-Marxists isn't to prevent oil extraction to safeguard the environment. Their goal is to control the US economy and energy is just the tool they want to use to do so. They are socialists pure and simple. They WANT to force industry out of this country. They WANT to force us all into small cars, small homes, onto public transportation, etc. I think these people have a "Logan's Run" vision of the future where humans have confined themselves to 'habitrails' and the outdoors has been designated off-limits to humanity.
It will take an extreme effort to educate the public and force the hand of weak-kneed politicians to counter the eco-MArxist radicals.

This information will never make it...
He makes too much sense. For decades the American people have been hypnotized into the GREEN MACHINE mentality. If you ever show them facts, they resort to hyperbole. (see Taft's comment #1).
Our indoctrination into the Global Warming myth is following in lock step with the earlier movements.
It's all about control of the economy. The Liberals already acknowledged it, but nobody was listening when Sheila Jackson Lee told the Oil Company Executives that the intention of Congress was to Socialize the Oil Business, Take it over! (Her words, not mine!)

Oops...
That was Maxine Waters, not Ms. Lee. Sorry for the misinformation.

To Chainsaw
Thanks for the valuable confirmation. I never realized that a rig would such a fish magnet, but it makes sense, given that it is just another artificial reef.

Sometimes I just sit back and shake my head and wonder how did we get here? If Rip Van Winkle were to wake up, and you explained that we have an oil shortage, and that (part of) the answer lies in our backyard, and that there are additional benefits (i.e. fish), and virtually no risk, but that we weren't drilling, but (as Fivo points out) other countries are, he'd think we were absolutely crazy!

And he'd be right.

America stand up to these socialist politicians. They are driving the United States into a third world country with their actions. Now the stupid Warner Lieberman bill, will kill the working people.
I have never seen our country in such shape.
One by one, the government is taking our freedoms. We don't have choices any more. We are run by government officials, lobbiests, media hacks, that consist of socialists.
Stand up, before it's too late!!

Limodriver & Others
Thanks for taking the time to read what I wrote. It is so exasperating knowing the truth of what is out there and then listening to people who do not have a clue speaking as if they know what is going on. A few years ago I did an extended inspection job off the California Coast near Santa Ynez & Santa Barbara related to the Harmony, Heritage, and Hondo platforms. Even off of the shore there (we had to follow pipelines in to about 50 ft of water, which was the shallow limit for ROVs) the marine growth on the pipelines was in stark contrast to the “dead” seabed beside the pipelines. As for the platforms themselves, just as in the Gulf of Mexico they were covered with marine growth---the feeding grounds for fish. The ROV pilots put together a great little DVD with music that captured the peaceful presence of sea life. By the way, I never realized that seals could descend to such incredible depths. The ROV lights at 850 ft attracted fish, and the seals came down for dinner. They would wipe out the visibility that we needed for inspections, but it was a special thing to see.

While many Californians may not like seeing platforms on the Pacific skyline, I doubt also if they like the results now of no-drilling policies.

rise up
We the people MUST rise up and DEMAND our representatives listen to us, in energy, education, health care, taxes, and all other issues. CONSERVATISM WORKS!.... Demand we return to the America that made us the greatest country on the face of the earth!

Confusing Them With Facts
Confusing people with facts that way creates some interesting tailspins.

Remember, greens are really watermelons. Underneath the skin its pure RED.

Seeing Platforms?
Chainsaw (and others) -

If the platforms are placed far enough away from shore, does that reduce/remove their visability? How far out can they be placed?

Who's pulling the strings?
Treadmilljoe #6. My thoughts exactly. There HAS to be a payoff somewhere that is keeping our elected officials from acting in OUR best interests. There is no other reason; always follow the money. Just because we cannot see the bribery, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Chainsaw, nice post, I appreciate the information.
DerKrieger. Who knows what the leftie enviros ultimate plans are? Remember in Logans Run, everyone 'renewed' at age 30. That would fit right in the nihilistic leftys' world plans. We're overcrowded and using up the planets resources at an alarming rate, remember?
'Renewing' at 30 would save the planet, and solve the social security and medicare mess, to boot. Socialist utopia!
Taft, your insinuation that a person can't be knowledgable or comment on this subject unless they have a degree in marine biology is just asinine. Typical lefty BS.
It seems the most informed one here is Chainsaw. Maybe you should never post on this subject as long as he's here.

Line of sight
If a person claims they can see those platforms 45 miles offshore, they need to have their eyes tested. What miraculous eyesight they would have. Maybe their eye stemcells could be replicated and sold. I'd love to have that kind of viual acuity.
Then we could ask the same person if they also have x-ray vision. I'd gladly pay for that, too!

Line of Sight
This might be a repeat--10 minutes and my first try has yet to appear.

Limodriver,

Line of sight for seeing things on the horizon over water is about 15 miles. (Environmentalists should keep in mind that the earth is round, so things disappear becasue of the earth's curvature once they get out about 15 miles.) But to see something 15 miles out it has to be fairly significant in size to begin with. At 15 miles they are a dot at best. Platforms are ideally placed where the drilling is directly over a well, thus you don't have a lot of choices for their placement. A rig (moveable after drilling completion) can have a subsea wellhead after completion that joins to a pipeline which in turn then can travel any number of miles either to onshore sites or to other offshore sites for other purposes (pumping, separation of fluids, etc.) (This is oversimplified for sake of discussion clarity, and it matters whether you are talking about natural gas or oil.)

Deepwater platforms are floaters and are not constructed up from the seabed, but rather are anchored to it in one of several different ways. These do have remote (satellite) subsea structures (protruding up from the seabed less than 30 feet on average) that in turn feed pipelines that then connect to the main platform. One of these deepwater platforms might cover an area 15 miles in diameter. It is not unusual for an export pipeline coming in to shore-based facilities from one of these deepwater platforms to be in excess of 100 miles long.

Deepwater drilling and recovery is expensive. The predominate lay ship for large diameter pipe in deepwater is the Allseas Solitaire, and it goes for around a million dollars a day, and that is long after big dollars have already been spent leading up to that point. In the Gulf of Mexico we are going into deeper and more expensive operations because fussy folks in Florida and California think a platform is the devil's own house.

This makes me sick!l
The damage the enviro wackos are doing to our nation, our children's future, and the lives of people all over the world makes me sick to my stomach. I don't know if they lose any sleep at night, but I sure do.

Everything the "greenies" touch ends up making things worse, and too much of what they do ends up killing innocent people. DDT for just one example. These people are dangerous to humans, plants, and animals. They have got to be stopped somehow before it is too late. I feel as if we're stuck on a planet filled with mad men on a mass suicide misson. I don't understand how so many people can buy into the "greenie" and the socalistic maddness. It is an evil maddness! It's insanity! What are they thinking? Why can't more people see where this is heading? It would be nice to believe that enough people can still wake up. I don't see that happening. Especially amoung our politicians.

Our forefathers fought for less reason than what we now are facing. They did say that from time to time revolutions may be neccessary to reset our freedoms and mutual prosperity. Are we prepared? Or are we just going to go out with a wimper? Has the evil been allowed to grow too big and powerful? Is it too late?

Some sanity has to happen soon.

H. Fontova: Benefits of Offshore Drilli
I didn't notice that Fontova claimed to have a degree of any kind. He quoted the enviromentalists own "experts" for most part. Yup, typical liberal pap; If you can't defend your position on any subject, just attack the messenger that is attempting to lead you out of your miserable head in the sand stance.

Toot
Not to toot my own horn, but since I did put some thought and time into posts #7, #18, & #24, and since I do have almost 25 years directly in the business with hands-on and eyes-on experience, anyone wanting to consider this subject beyond the fine article itself might want to review those particular posts.

Now a political point: those who scream "no blood for oil" guarantee that we will expend blood for oil because our need at the present time of petroleum is an economic reality that we cannot deny or ignore. Our security and future is linked to oil until we figure something else out, and as a nation we must do whatever we can (legally) to obtain it. You may not like hearing this, but it is true. Because we have tied our own hands and not allowed pursuit and production on the lands that we own and control, we fill the coffers of those who do allow drilling and production. The Saudis have built a nice indoor ski run to have a nice place to play. We won't even encourage building a refinery.

Wake up call: Let one, just one, hurricane remotely the size of Katrina come up just west of New Orleans, and Port Fourchon (pronounced foo-shon) will get wiped out. If we lose Fourchon (it is unprotected), look for $15.00 gasoline at the pumps and for heating bills to quadruple. We are running on borrowed time, and I mean this.

It is clear no help from Government
The continued raise in gas prices has shown one thing that has been for sometime, no new oil drilling in the USA and lack of any refineries in several decades, is making energy in the USA worse. Our Government at all levels and both parties are useless as they are tied to special interests, and they do not help us but continue to tax us. The only thing we must do is vote for a viable third party candidate for each position at all levels. Either Libertarian or Constitutional Party or a good write in. Maybe we can wake the parties up.

Platforms harbor fish!
Oil platforms are like artificial reefs. They provide cover for smaller fish and this draws bigger fish. In the Gulf a lot of saltwater spearfishers used to stalk grouper and other deep water fish near oil platforms. If there was something eeevilll about the platforms they forgot to tell the fish.

-Ray

Good column, but...
"Sometimes us locals can barely squeeze in."

We locals.

Revolutionary information!
Humberto's work here is absolutely Fantastic good news to this one-time liberal out here in California. I live in Sac as we call the capitol of this gerrymandered, essentially criminal organization known as the State Government of California. Our MSM media out here is totally under the control of luddite backward-looking pc weaklings, I say weaklings because they are deeply afraid to even hear arguments that conflict with their liberal-marxist religion.

We NEVER have heard anything like this out here! I'm very proud of my fellow Americans in the great state of Louisiana who work those platforms in every capacity, fish the local seas, dive around them, etc., for all of you are contributing to America's freedom and knowledge base. What is so warm-heartening is the positive tone of intelligent thoughtfulness used to express ideas in your commentary. You are all so different than the shallow hate-speech that pervades the huffington post which we call huf-hate. Our dem controlled, New Jersey style political machine out here would be terrified to see this information.

We are shutting down our local machine politics monopoly newspaper, the Sacramento Bee, whose parent co. has lost $500,000,000.00 in the last three years and whose stock has lost 80% of it's value in the last two years. Three days ago they announced the loss of 86 more jobs, but their hate for America continues un-abated.

They are dying, even as local small upbeat papers thrive. I want to tell other conservatives out there that we can defeat these monsters but it takes work. Ad sales is their weak point. If you starve them out they will fall. They are our enemy, more so than the Moslem extremists because they are the ones opening the door letting all sorts of bad in, lying to the people daily (as in never telling us of your wonderful discovery down there in Louisiana, trashing our brave soldiers in Iraq and hiding just how much Iraqis thank America).

Great article
I worked offshore Louisiana and Texas for over 2 decades combined. I was there when EPA restrictions were alot less stringent than they arfe now and I was/am there now. Mr. Humberto's example of fishing boats tied to oil rigs is so common to someone who's actually been there they are hardly noticed. I used to fish from the platform and catch bags full of fish in just a few days. I'm talking about snappers, sand trout, marlin, and other varieties. A simple look down over the side reveals the schools of fish waiting for a natural prey to wander by. These platforms really are like gardens of the sea but don't expect "enviromentalists" to see them that way, America is now at the mercy of it's dumber minority, all of whom call themseleves Democrats.

TreadmillJoe
You are correct about OPEC and it's mission. If one will think back just a few years ago when OPEC created it's "target bushel price" their stated plan was no higher than $28/bbl. Despite the price/barrel being much higher the OPEC members kept the tap closed claiming it was a refining problem, not a crude shortage. While there is a refining deficit in this country (thanks again to our liberal friends), keeping the output low keeps foreign stockpiles low which in turn buoys prices. Now oil is well over $100/barrel and OPEC's answer was to raise production by 500,000 bpd. America ALONE consume 11 million bpd so just how much does OPEC think this increase will do? If we continue to listen to these airhead eco warriors and their congressional allies we'll truly see just how high fuel can get along with all the fringe "benefits" high fuel prices bring.
